No backup? In this day and age of cloud storage, big data, and multiple backup systems, it is unbelievable — no, unacceptable — for an agency like the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to lose the biometrics registration of a number of voters. Biometrics, it will be recalled, has been one of the requirements for voting through Republic Act No. 10367 signed by President Benigno Aquino in February 2013. Without biometrics, which consists of digitally captured voter’s photograph, fingerprints, and signature, a voter’s name can be deactivated, a fact cited by Comelec in urging the estimated four million voters without it to visit the nearest Comelec office. “No bio, no boto (No biometrics, no vote),” the poll body has declared. But with Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez admitting on Friday that the data of early registrants had been erased, the entire program has been put in question. He did not say how many were affected, but even a small number places the credibility of the Comelec — and by extension the holding of the 2016 election — on the
line. In the first place, losing data is hardly ever possible these days as long as one’s IT office is competent. Any office — private of government — worth its salt will naturally have running backups of important data, both locally in physical hard drives and remotely in socalled cloud storage systems. Even students do this with their schoolwork and assignments to protect them from being eaten by the proverbial dog. Companies, businesses, and professionals know enough these days to keep copies of their files safe in case one form of storage fails. This is especially true in this day and age when tech-savvy individuals and groups with nefarious intent can so easily hack into networks and computers to steal or destroy data. It just makes good sense to back up data to guard against intentional attacks, system failures, or simple incompetence. Jimenez has offered no excuse or explanation for the loss of biometric data and why Comelec has no back-up. He has only said the affected voters have been sent letters or otherwise been informed that they need to provide their biometrics again.
But Comelec must be taken to task to explain the matter. Every election is crucial, and Comelec must protect itself from even the slightest insinuation or suspicion of incompetence. The way it is going, it is showing itself unable to handle the hightech requirements of holding an election. If biometrics data can so easily be lost, what does that say of how the 2016 election will be held? Premature It’s an age-old issue, a problem that has been bothering us for the past three decades ever since democracy was restored in the Philippines and we could vote freely for any candidate we want. Every cycle of three years we are subjected to paid advertisements put out by various personalities about themselves and their accomplishments and, at least on the surface, nothing more. They are, of course, thinly veiled campaign ads, but they skirt election laws against premature campaigning simply by not mentioning that they are running for any elective post. In this sense no law is violated, and they are actually free to air or print as many ads as they can. That, of course, is one of the practice’s biggest problems. In most cases these personalities are already serving in some official government capacity, either as
elected politicians or appointed officials, and the question that needs to be asked is where the funds for the advertisements come from. A government official has access to the people’s taxes, and the ads can be easily charged to “information campaign,” “communications strategy,” or some such official-sounding terminology. Legally, there is nothing we can do against them. We cannot even force them to resign – again because they are not actually breaking any law. Even the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has sided with these officials, saying they need not resign until they file their certificate of candidacy (COC) in October. Then and only then will they be subject to the ban on premature campaigning. It is a loophole that is so easily exploited by anyone with an eye for elective office, but it has to be addressed if we are to prevent the misuse of public funds. If the people have no recourse in the Comelec, then we will have to do it ourselves by calling out these officials and telling them their advertisements — infomercials, as they like calling them — are not welcome. Dealing with negative people “That is so stupid… She is so ugly… It’s not my fault; it’s theirs… He will always be a failure… They made me do it… It’s hopeless… I give up…” We all know someone, a friend, family member, or colleague, who usually looks at the downside of situations. They can be very critical sometimes and unpleasant to be around. Whether they are making fun of a person’s outfit, blaming the teacher after they have failed a test, or predicting a terrible weekend the second it gets cloudy, it can be enough to make you run away. It is likely that negative people have deep fears about themselves that come up in a variety of ways. Often, they are judgmental. For instance, they see a child throwing a tantrum and think that the mother is a terrible parent. Negative people are often demanding, putting pressure on others to do things perfectly. This can extend to being controlling, for example having strong opinions about what their spouse or children wear, eat or how they behave. This is because they are insecure about their own abilities and how the world
looks at them. They can also be pessimistic, predicting failure or negative results when there is no evidence that it will happen. Negative people often avoid opening up in social settings like meetings or parties because they are afraid that what they say will be “used against them.” This can lead to boring conversations and “surface” relationships. Although this type of person can be difficult to be around, we often keep them in our lives because either we care for them or we don’t have a choice (for example, a supervisor). Talking to negative people can leave us feeling uncomfortable, stressed, and even angry. We can sometimes doubt ourselves and start to experience anxiety. So what can we do about this kind of situation? We cannot control others; we only have power over our own thoughts and actions. Here are some ways to deal with negative people effectively: 1. At first, provide support and be a compassionate listener. Sometimes, the person can just be having a bad day; they do not normally blame and criticize others or look at the glass as half empty. By hearing their
story, you can help them to feel better. However, if the person is negative most of the time, it is time to change your strategy. 2. Don’t buy into the negativity. Joining in and agreeing with the person’s statements will only leave you feeling awful afterwards. Worse, if someone else overhears you, they might label you as a negative person. Don’t respond to their attempts to engage you in this way of thinking. Simply use short answers like “oh” and “I see.” They should soon get the message that you don’t agree. 3. Avoid confronting them or advising them to change their ways. Most people don’t take criticism well and people who are already negative will not have a good reaction. This approach will only make the problem worse. What you want to do is show them how to be positive, not tell them how. It does not help to criticize a criticizer. 4. Role model positivity. Compliment that person and others around you. Saying things like “you did a great job” and “that was nice of you to do that” will leave them feeling better about themselves. They may then
start to adopt the same kinds of behaviour. Also, be sure of your own good qualities. If you are more confident yourself, you won’t be as upset when you hear negative comments. You’ll be able to respond with confidence. For example, the person might say, “I don’t think you should take that job.” You might want to lash out and say, “You never support me!” or “Why do you have to bring me down?” However, being sure of yourself and your choices might lead you to respond instead with, “I think this will be a good change for me.” 5. Encourage them to look at the bright side. After someone tells you about his or her awful experience or how someone else is to blame for what happened, respond by saying, “What did you learn from that situation?” or “What do you think you would do differently next time?” This encourages them to realize that they have power to change things for the better, and that they are not helpless. For some people, making negative comments can be a cry for help. Underneath, they may be feeling pain, sadness or anger, and they don’t know how to recognize or communicate See BRIDGES p5

Second-class citizens? The recent changes in citizenship residency, language requirements, age of testing and dramatic fee increases have caused many in the local Filipino expatriate community to ask aloud, “Are we being treated like second-class citizens in Canada?” In the past two weeks I have been approached and asked this question by a number of community members. The picture of current Minister Chris Alexander bending down to congratulate a new citizen is heart warming, but does little to comfort potential applicants and other Canadians in the face of a number of drastic changes. Before the well-staffed public relations department of government can protest that I am ignoring the good they have done to the Citizenship Act and its administration, I shall take this opportunity to point out a number of changes under the Harper government that may explain why community members might consider themselves second class. 1. The first is the residency requirement, which has been changed from three to four years. Why was it necessary to increase the time of residency and why was it accompanied by a requirement for 183 minimum days inside Canada within each of the years? How has this change improved Canadian citizenship other than delaying the process further? 2. What about the timetested way of giving former
long-term temporary foreign workers a minimum one-year credit towards their citizenship residency. This also has been removed and again no satisfying explanation has been provided. The past credit, I understand, was an acknowledgement of the commitment and contributions of overseas foreign workers. Why increase the amount of time longterm foreign workers must wait before becoming citizens? 3. The age for testing has been increased from 55 to 64 years of age? Why increase this requirement? Does this make 55 years and older applicants more committed or more Canadian? Once again the quick conclusion is that it delays their becoming citizens because it is harder for most to pass the examination as they age. If you cannot pass at 55 years of age, chances are you are not going to pass at 64 but rather have to wait out those years in between. Once again the immediate impact is reducing the number of older applicants for citizenship. 4. The examination process has been under review for some time because the current government decided that it was too easy and they should have a better knowledge of our past, especially our military past. I am not so sure about the motivation but the result was a spike in the number of failures. Was it necessary to raise the bar and once again and
by extension deny citizenship to many? From the applicant perspective, one must question why the government continues to put up more and more obstacles to prevent landed immigrants from becoming citizens. 5. Then there are the processing fees, which were raised over 300 per cent in the space of roughly two years – from $200 for adult aged applicants to the current $630. Now there is a rumour of the fee going up further to $1,000. Is this possible? Given the direction and recent history of the Harper government, I cannot give any assurances that the fees will not increase again. 6. We also have the specter of other changes, which include the revocation of citizenship. At one time this was a rare occasion used in celebrated cases such as that the war criminal Walter Demanjuk, who served as a guard in one of the death camps of the Second World War. Now the bar has been lowered considerably and persons involved in lesser crimes could be subject to revocation and deportation. At one time the Governor General of Canada was the last person for appeal. Now it is the same Minister of Citizenship and Immigration whose department is responsible for the changes outlined above. 7. The current government goes to great lengths to convince us that processing times have gone down and also backlogs. Small wonder when you raise fees, residency requirements, English or French proficiency, toughen examinations, and raise ages to 65 for persons who are exempt. How many applicants are being turned
away, turned off and discouraged from even applying? 8. In the middle of all the negative changes, the government also increased the residency requirements for all newcomers, especially parents and grandparents, from 10 years to 20 years before becoming eligible for Canada pension. Was this necessary or is this again something that goes towards making community members suspicious of the motivations of the current government and the way they regard newcomers? 9. My last example is the one that prompted many to express their concern. Let me go through the recent change. Late Friday, June 5, 2015, the Citizenship website announced that they were changing the residency requirement. My observation, before government defenders protest, is not that the change was not expected. It was rather the way the change was implemented. First it was announced late at the end of the week with notification that new residency requirements and applications were effective June 11, 2015. The time was kind of short but, wait, there was a further requirement that only applications received by CPC-Sydney by June 10, 2015 would be accepted. This was a very short warning. The notice clearly stated that even those date stamped June 10, 2015 or before would be accepted. The date stamp is important because, in the past, the intention (shown by date stamp) to meet the change would have been acceptable. One conclusion is that the process has the appearance of being fair but in practice is something less. I
know of cases where applicants in Winnipeg travelled by plane to eastern Canada to meet the reduced window of opportunity. The list above is not exhaustive, I could add more, but to what purpose? The question of second-class citizens comes from one or all of the above. The overall impression is that the government is trying its best to limit citizenship rather than expand it. Does this mean that naturalized Canadians are not really welcome or that they are something less than native-born Canadians? It is accumulated frustration and anger with a government that appears bent on denying citizenship and the protection it affords to permanent residents. The changes may have speeded up the process, but at what cost? The very real fears of community members are something that should be addressed in the upcoming election. Do you feel more welcome in the Canada that the current government is promoting, as evidenced not only by changes in citizenship law and practice, but also in the entire immigration process? If you consider, as many do, that the changes have a negative impact on community members, then it may be time to change the way you vote in the upcoming federal election. Gender identity theft Last month I shared with you some of the most intimate details of my life. This month, I continue my family’s story of heartache and triumph. June’s article, “Gender identity crisis,” turned some heads. As the title suggested, there was a crisis, not in our family, but in those in our community who did not understand. Individuality. We are all different and that is what makes us special. When we look in the mirror, what do you see? When we refer to our partners, we frequently say, “I love how we’re alike” or “opposites attract.” We are all individuals. Take me for example; I am turning 40 this month. I’ve known for a very long time who I am and what my goals in life are. My wife Izzy, other than being so very lucky to have an awesome husband like me, is a strong woman who has proven over and over again that she will fight for
her family. There is no doubt that you don’t want to poke this mama bear. Our oldest is Johnny. He’s 21 and so loving. Since he was a child, he’s always had this caring side to him. He enjoyed taking care of his younger siblings. He’s got a nurturing spirit. He’s continued his love for people and life to this day. I hope he never changes. William is now 19 and loves his new start on Vancouver Island. He’s had his struggles with identity. He knew at a young age that he is gay. He may have had struggles in school, but he has come out stronger and is growing into a young, confident man who now works three part-time jobs because he has goals to achieve. He is one of my heroes. Rece is now 12. I’ve been told he is the spitting image of me. He quickly made friends after our move west. He has this ability to strike up a conversation
with anyone. He enjoys school and constantly does his homework early (I know he didn’t get that from me; I’m a procrastinator). For any sport, he doesn’t have to try hard to do well. Gavin just turned 11 in June. He is small in stature but big in heart. He isn’t afraid to hold my hand in public and every night, after we kiss him goodnight, he says, “I love you, never ends.” He is constantly misunderstood (mostly by me, sorry kiddo) and he is a quick learner when it comes to athletic skills. Our youngest is Bella. At nine years old, she has shown more courage and determination than most people. As you know, she is transgender and very proud of it. Recently, we were given the honour to be the “host family” at the annual Rainbow Resource Gala, where a pre-taped interview with Bella was played in front of hundreds. We could not make the event in person, but we definitely felt the spirit. Many people who attended said Bella’s story and her instructions for donors to “open their wallets” to help Rainbow Resource Centre was the talk of the night. Her courage to live on the outside with who she is on the inside started See BURGOS p10

One of the most wildly popular feng shui books is Karen Kingston’s Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui. And one of the topics she covers in the book – that few others have dared to touch – is the subject of the elimination system and its tie to your personal feng shui. While it’s not a pretty subject to talk about, Karen deftly connects clutter in the house with the symbol of our internal clutter we all deal with daily: our colon. She writes that your home is connected to every part of your body, and your colon is too. The idea is that by looking at both your home’s clutter and removal of what’s unnecessary, used up and needing to be purged, as well as the health of your colon, you’ll create greater health and well being in all parts of your life. What’s interesting is that she contends by clearing up your colon, you can help rid yourself of emotional issues that may have been buried for years. Heal Your Body guru Louise Hay says that stomach problems are based on dread and fear of new situations and circumstances. Even bad breath can be a symptom of stomach issues, and one that Hay says is a fixation on thoughts of revenge or personal experiences backing up. Either way, both are about the past. And that’s true of clutter. It’s about holding on to what’s no longer useful. I’ve seen clients finally be able to move past emotional blockages in their lives, marriages and careers after a thorough decluttering and cleaning. I’ve also seen resistant clients who love their thrift store and eBay buys and who can never seem to move forward in their lives, staying forever stuck in problems from their past as they live through

other people’s castoffs. If you’ve had stomach or elimination system complaints, take a look at these feng shui tips for helping you clear clutter – both at home and in your colon – and see if your life and elimination system improve. Hemorrhoids In the house, hemorrhoids and fissures can often show up as clutter and mess at the back door. Yes, the backdoor of your home symbolizes your body’s “back door” too! Clear out clutter and mess by the door, keep it swept and clear to help if you’ve got hemorrhoid problems. Constipation equals clutter. Clutter equals constipation. Whether it’s inside you or surrounding you, clutter represents matter or matters that haven’t been gotten rid of or handled. Work on clearing out excess clutter, particularly at the back of the house (the less public side) and the back door. Work on emotional matters too. Lay problems to rest – or handle them once and for all. Many stomach complaints can be symbols of denial and refusal to address matters and problems and resolve them. Hidden clutter symbolizes stomach issues. Because constipation represents what’s hidden, look for hidden clutter such as the kind found in drawers (like those infamous junk drawers), desks and closets as a source of constipation. Streamline drawers and add organizers to make these areas more orderly. Another common indicator of constipation? A messy desk. Little sticky notes, random papers and ancient or non-working pens and pencils are a good sign that there’s a stoppage in your colon or stomach problems.

Digestive upset, stomach complaints, hemorrhoids? Check your feng shui Emotions in the stomach. When there are difficulties with the stomach, there are often problems with the area representing the abdominal area in our home, the southwest. When the stomach is out of balance, so are the emotions because this is where we process many of our negative emotions (spleen, pancreas, liver, colon, kidney, stomach – fear, anger, worry, depression). Stomach problems can range from stomach rumbling, gas, diarrhea or constipation. When emotions are out of balance, we often feel it “in our gut.” Work on the southwest corner of your home, living room, the bedroom, your home office, the kitchen and the dining room. Keeping these corners clear and clean will help your stomach and your emotional health, and help relieve you of negative emotions. Kick digestive problems. Foot problems give lots of clues about problems in the body. Problems with the big toes, such as callouses and toenail issues can point to problems with the neck. Soreness on the inside ankles or arches can indicate kidney or bladder issues. And the heel? It shows problems too. When the heels are cracked it can indicate anal fissures or hemorrhoids. Get regular pedicures to keep feet and stomach health in good condition. If you have severe foot problems such as fungus, be sure to see a podiatrist or your physician as severe foot problems can create a myriad of digestive and bodily complaints. Regular reflexology treatments are also a good idea for keeping the whole body in tiptop shape. FENG SHUI Q&A Question:
Many stomach complaints can be warning signs of denial and refusal to address and resolve personal problems I am so insecure in my job and afraid I might get fired. I have a window behind me but I close the blinds at all times. Please tell me what I can do so I feel secure and safe in my job. Answer: That’s hard to go to work every day and worry you might lose your job. I’m wondering if you’re really fearful about your job or just worried because the window is behind you and that it might cause you to be let go? If you’re really worried about being fired, it sounds like it’s not a good place to work to begin with. If your concern is based more on fears that the window is going to cause you a problem, then firstly, please don’t be so fearful. Thinking negatively is never helpful. I always say that we bring things about in our life by fear and by focus. Whether you focus on something or you fear it, you are putting your energy there and that can attract the thing that you want/ don’t want to happen. If possible, can you angle your desk? Maybe you can get a return (side desk) where you can turn so
Foot problems give lots of clues about problems in the body that the window is to your left or right side. When I worked in the corporate world, my last job was in an office that was a solid wall of windows. My desk was oriented with my back to the window, but I had a return on the desk where I used to work on my computer. I ended up leaving this job on my own and launched my feng shui business that I have to this day – fourteen years later. So, although I left the job, it was for something better! I guess what I’m trying to suggest is that maybe you’ll leave on your own and for something better, too, and not necessarily because you’re fired. Having a window behind you doesn’t always mean you have a target on your back, so try to think positively. Don’t be so fearful that something bad will happen, and try to move your desk, and if you can’t, change the position that you sit in and see if that doesn’t help you feel better and more secure. For those who may not know, I am glad to say that I also do event reviews for the Pilipino Express, and have recently been part of the team that has launched the Filipino Media Foundation Canada (FilMedia). The intent of doing these has been based on my own interests in connecting the community to groups, events and services that are available to them. Essentially, I’m doing what I do in this column (specifically for education), but in a broader sense of local organizations, talents, and events. When I am on location at various events for FilMedia, particularly at this year’s Philippine Heritage Week, one question kept coming up from members of the community: “How do you find the time to do this all and teach during the day?” The first time I was asked, I sincerely had to pause and reflect, as it was something I had never really thought about. I just did it, without hesitation. I’ve come to a realization that, as cliché as it may sound, when you truly love what you do (and do things with purpose), you don’t notice how much you are really doing. I have shared this sentiment with my students, some of who
PILIPINO EXPRESS
have seen me at these after-school community events. A good chunk of the students in my classroom have been highly involved in extra-curricular activities. Granted that children generally have more energy than I have, it still made a lot of sense to me. When you love what you do, the source of energy is not in question. It comes from the heart. You do it because you want to, and because it’s truly meaningful for you. Like my students, however, I had to learn to adjust my schedule accordingly. I began to prioritize my daily tasks. I made lists. I put things in order of necessity. Things that were not as important in the grander scheme of my week were easily axed or rescheduled. Laundry could wait one more day when it’s not as busy, but those report card sample comments need to be done pronto! I had to allow myself dedicated times for physical activity or meditation. Mental health is crucial when you want to be productive, for work, and for errands. I was a woman running on adrenaline and passion, but structured in a schedule that pushed me to be disciplined with how I spend my time and energy. I am proud to say that my obligations were met, I did not need time extensions, and I was

Time management: Keep it together and get things done! able to reach my goal through FilMedia. In doing this, and openly sharing my strategies with my students, I have found that they, too, have been inspired to become aware of their time. This is a habit that I feel anyone could truly benefit from. Parent tip: Modelling time management Nothing is impossible. The word itself can be broken up to “I’m Possible.” We have the same hours per day as anyone else on this planet – it’s how we choose to spend it. Be a role model for your child by scheduling your time wisely. Show them how time
management is an effective way to get things finished and to reach goals. Even more important, now that it is officially summer break, schedule quality time as a family to bond and/or to be active! On that note of summer break, I shall make my graceful exit. I would love to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported my column thus far. It has been awhile since the last time you heard from me. Duty life on the street requires considerable time and energy, causing your Pulis Kababayan to scramble for free time to write an article. Last Sunday (June 21, 2015) was the official start of our Summer time here in Canada with lots of outdoor activities for the family and for our personal life. As I go around, one thing that caught my attention is the rapidly expanding practical shooting community. I had a chance to attend to some of their shooting competitions and I was amazed with the number of our kababayans who enjoy in the sport. Ano nga ba itong practical shooting sport? Practical shooting is a type of a high adrenalin sport involving three shooting principles accuracy, power and speed. This type of shooting discipline not only involves shooting the target but it also dwells on how fast and accurate you engage it while taming the power of the ammunition you are using. The International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) regulates the sport internationally. Here in Canada every province has its own IPSC affiliate body. Another shooting sport, which is governed by the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA), simulates self-defence scenarios and real life encounters. One of the unique facets of this sport is that it is geared toward

the new or average shooter, yet it is fun, challenging and rewarding for the experienced shooter. This sport was developed so that practical gear and practical guns may be used competitively. An interested person can spend a minimal amount on equipment and still be competitive, unlike the practical shooting sport wherein the sky is the limit for equipment and handguns. Another fast-emerging shooting sport is the three-gun competition, which combines handgun, rifle (carbine platform) and shotgun. A competitor engages different targets – paper and steel – at varying distances and sequences. Some targets require a rifle scope to engage, which is pretty cool. The IPSC also governs and regulates this sport. Paano ba ako makasasali dito? Individuals who want to join these sports must: possess a valid Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) for a restricted type of firearm; be member of a gun club; and pass the theoretical and practical phases of a “black badge” course. The purpose of the course is to train competitors in the practical or defensive shooting sports and give them the basic skills necessary to participate in IPSC/ IDPA competitions. It explains the required personal equipment and how to move while engaging a target. All lessons emphasize the safety of the competitors and spectators. for miles. That was, until her identity was almost taken away from her. We’ve all had struggles – some with addiction, some with family and others financially. For us, our
You might be thinking why your Pulis Kababayan is discussing these sports. Its for the simple reason that there are only three legitimate reasons why we want to own a firearm: either for protection, which confines our firearm inside our homes; for recreation, which dwells mainly on rifles and shotguns classified as non-restricted types of firearms; and being involved in the shooting sports that use restricted and
regulated firearms. Here in Canada owning a firearm starts with getting a license. However, not all types of firearms can be legally acquired or purchased to include the accessories that are attendant to it. In the next few articles, I will be discussing the Firearms Act and the regulations for possessing and acquiring a firearm as related to the Criminal Code of Canada. Sabi nga ng mga matatanda,

struggles lied with people who simply did not understand what it means to live as a transgender person. Children get it almost immediately. It’s the adults who take a bit longer to fully grasp the idea. You see, we’ve grown
up and have, over the years, developed our own opinions of the world, whether it be through life experiences or how we were brought up and the environment in which we lived. Without getting into every single detail, our little girl, like
every other person in the world, needed to pee. Naturally, in her mind, she is a girl and would obviously use the girls’ bathroom. This isn’t a new concept and has been in practice all over world for years. Little did we know that this one little action would stir up controversy that provided water cooler talk amongst the parents and staff in the school. Ultimately, this led to a complaint filed with the police and the start of a lengthy Manitoba Human Rights Commission process. Never in our wildest dreams would we have thought a grown adult would confront our child about her bathroom usage, nor would we have thought that a school division would consult with their lawyers about which bathroom our child uses. Nobody has the right to tell us who we are as individuals. Their actions almost robbed my daughter of her identity. So we fought back. Next month I will continue to share our challenges and triumphs from this past year.

*** Napakasarap pisil-pisilin sa See CRISTY p13

CRISTY...
I’ll just join the kids again. Thank you.” See CRISTY p15

• Megan Young – bagong Marimar
“Kinilig ako dahil it’s a big
break.
“Si Marimar kasi, she’s like any other Pinay who strives for the best. Kahit nag-fail siya, in the end she’ll make sure na yung failure ay magiging encouragement sa kaniya to strive for the better,” pagtatapos ni Megan.
Magsisimulang mapanood ang Marimar ngayong Agosto sa GMA Telebabad.

CRISTY... From page 13 Iyon ang kaniyang opinyon.

Taking the road less travelled When there’s only one option to reach your dreams, you either pursue that dream or give it up. The thought of uncertainty, the fear of the unknown or of what’s out there are usually the most common things that hold people back. But Rosario Marquez Llanes is not someone to give up on a dream easily, even if it means taking the road less travelled. Rosario grew up in Project 6, Quezon City with her four other siblings. Her father passed away when she was 14 leaving her mom to raise all five of them and somehow manage to send them to school. Her older brother, who was in civil engineering, inspired Rosario to pursue a similar profession. She had a knack for numbers and was really good at math; thus, she decided to take chemical engineering because it was the more popular career path for women in engineering at the time. In 1980, she graduated from the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines with a bachelor degree in chemical engineering, and then passed the board exam a year later. After graduation, Rosario worked in the field of technical sales in the Philippines for almost 11 years. She, along with her three young children and spouse immigrated to Winnipeg in 1993 where most of her and her husband’s family had already settled. Upon her arrival, she immediately submitted her credentials to the University of Manitoba (U of M). Since chemical engineering was not offered there, the U of M gave her an acceptance letter in the Faculty of Chemistry. She decided not take that route, as she was not seeking to obtain a second degree. She recalled that things were different back in 1993, when employers usually would look for Canadian experience. That frustrated her since she was

only applying for her first job in Canada. She eventually managed to work in a fast food chain, but only for a month, as that was not where her heart belonged. Her big break came in 1997, when she finally got her first engineering work experience as a process specialist in an aerospace company in Winnipeg. She met many immigrant engineers in the workplace who were registered as professional engineers. This gave her the inspiration to take a step in her engineering career in Canada. She was now very determined to get back to her chosen profession. In September of that same year, after submitting all her academic credentials to APEGM, the Board of Examiners gave her eight courses to complete under the proficiency examination program. In 1997, the IEEQ (Internationally Educated Engineers Qualification) program was not yet in existence, but even so, she would not have been able to get into the program since chemical engineering was not offered in any educational institutions in Manitoba. Taking university courses would have been an easier route to take, but she did it the hard; she challenged and passed all eight confirmatory exams. At times there were bumps in her chosen path and she almost gave up. She had to work full-time, be a mother to three young children and study all by herself at the same time. In 2007, after ten long years, she finally reached her destination when her dream became reality. Her proudest moment came when she attended the recognition ceremony for new engineers that same year and finally received her certification as a Professional Engineer in the province of Manitoba. Prior to this, she worked as a process engineer at Standard Aerospace in Winnipeg. Looking at how things are now compared to what she had to go through, the process of obtaining professional certification from APEGM is now much easier, as there are several options to choose. This should further fuel the desires of Filipino immigrant engineers to pursue their profession. As part of IEG (Immigrant Engineers & Geoscientist) Roadmap to Engineering Project through Engineers Canada, short video testimonials are available where a number of immigrant engineers (including Rosario) had the opportunity to share their testimonials on different topics facing immigrant engineers. To provide you an idea what they are all about, she invites all to visit the Engineers Canada website. http:// www.engineerscanada.ca/videos. As Rosario puts it, “be persistent in your desire to achieve your goal.” She further states that the roadmap to engineering in Canada may be long and tiring, but whatever it takes, it is still worth the wait. In parting she shares this invaluable information and advice: “For those new immigrant engineers who wish to find work in his profession, go to Service Canada. They have a job bank. It is recommended to come up with a good resume and prepare well for an interview. Search through the Internet for job openings

Age is just a number It was a busy weekend for our athletes, June 13-14, 2015. Eight athletes from Sulong Triathlon Group competed in two separate race events held that weekend. Jimmy Anis (47) had an impressive time of 5:56:47 in the 70.3-mile Long Course (2K swim / 90K bike / 21K run) of the Liberty Triathlon held at Lake Rebecca Park Reserve, Rockford, Minnesota on June 13. A remarkable feat on its own made more so considering this was only Jimmy’s third-ever ever triathlon race and his first attempt at the 70.3 mile distance. According to Jimmy, “As a team, we all push ourselves and I’m equally grateful for the motivation our teammates have given me, so our achievements all link back to our team. This sport pushes our bodies to limits that most people would never even think about. Thanks for letting me be a part of a great team! Sulong pride! More important, Filipino pride!” The following day, June 14, at Bird’s Hill Provincial Park, five STG triathletes participated in the Sprint distance (750m swim / 26.6K bike / 5K run), namely Jimmy Antonio (46), Paquito Brucal (50), Frederick Del Rosario (44), Edward Friesen (34), and Erid Mendoza (39). Armand Siapno (44), who got into triathlon last year, raced the Olympic distances of 1.5K swim, 40K bike, and 10K run. It was his first time in this category. With the exception of Armand and Erid, the rest were in for their first ever triathlon experience. Meanwhile in the Kids of Steel Division, Erid’s son, Yacine, placed second over all among boys ages six and seven years old. Their race consisted of a 50m swim, 1.5K bike, and 500m run. “Great feeling after finishing my first race after a long winter training. Triathlon is something that I’ve always dreamed of doing. I wish I started doing this years ago. One training and one race at a time.’’ says Paquito Brucal, who at 50 years old is at the fittest stage of his life. “I am proud to have completed my first triathlon as a member of the Sulong Triathlon Group. Crossing the finish line was a great personal achievement of health and physical fitness for me and it was lots of fun!” reveals Edward Friesen, who is a first-time finisher and only started serious training this year when he joined the club. “I dedicate this race to my family. Without their support I would not have completed this race” exclaims Jimmy Antonio, who now only has one kidney since donating one to his son a few years ago. Jimmy only started attending swimming lessons in the fall of 2014 and is observing a strict diet and active lifestyle
to keep his remaining kidney healthy. As preparation for this race weekend, the team trained for more than six months in different disciplines of swimming, cycling, running, and strength training. The team also conducted two “Winter Lecture Series” during the off-season where they had workshops in basic and intermediate cycling, efficient running form, preventing & treating sports injuries, and doing fast (swim-to-bike and bike-torun) transitions. The team will next participate in various races in Manitoba, in St. Malo, Morden, Hecla, and Pinawa. Wystan Celestino and Jimmy Anis are both training for the prestigious Ironman (4K swim, 180K bike, 42K run) races in Boulder, Colorado and Madison Wisconsin, respectively.

Bea Jaime shines at fundraiser concert By Judianne Jayme With the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) approaching, Bea Jaime hosted her fundraiser event at Jimel’s International Cuisine on June 13th, 2015. One lesson learned quickly through Bea and her special guests is that, despite technical difficulties, the show goes on. What was most impressive was the professionalism that these young artists demonstrated as they continued to play continuously until the technical difficulties were fixed. Opening artists, The 12/21, were back on stage, with their drummer continuing to keep time as the amps were reset. Despite having to re-start their song several times, the band did not lose optimism or energy; if anything, it only encouraged them to pour themselves into their music. Hosts Lawrence
Ticsay and Julienne Reyes were quick on their feet to do prize draws and raffles throughout the night, including sets of tickets to Winnipeg Speed Fest, provided by the team behind Pinoy Tribe Entertainment. Host Julienne Reyes performed the new hit Flashlight, popularized by the latest Pitch Perfect movie. James Cruzat also took the stage between sets, and even returned for a rendition of The Prayer with Jaime. One final guest of the evening was another young talent, the same age as Jaime, named Vina Dimayuga, who had her own opportunity to perform and compete at the WCOPA in a previous year. Dimayuga sang a duet with Jaime, and also sang her rendition of Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People, complete with playing her own guitar. Bea Jaime, taking the stage, See BEA p19

Steinbach hosts its annual Summer in the City event By Judianne Jayme Evening rain and morning clouds did not stop Steinbach and Winnipeg residents from enjoying the three-day Summer in the City festival held June 19 to 21 in Steinbach. Main Street was blocked off to make room for a midway amusement park complete with rides and a petting zoo. There was a main stage for entertainment as well as a wing to host Cultures in the City, featuring booths representing different countries, each serving up delicious dishes for sale. The stage in this wing was home to cultural performances from countries such as the Philippines, Russia, Ukraine, Argentina, and India to name a few. There were two Philippine booths set up, equally busy with patrons looking to try Filipino food such as barbecue, lumpia, and pansit. The first act to open up the Cultures in the City program was Winnipeg’s very own Magdaragat Philippines, hosts of the annual Pearl of the Orient Philippine Pavilion at Folklorama. Their set consisted of some members of their Children’s Theatre Company as well as their main troupe of performers from the older Youth Development Council. They gave a good tour of the different regions of the Philippines in their dance set, consisting of Pangalay from their Muslim suite, using steel fingernails. They also performed Lumagen from their Cordillera suite and the youngest members of the group performing adorable dances from the Rural suite. Singer Vina Dimayuga also performed two songs in between suites. The performance ended with tapis, their classic audience participation dance, which got patrons literally dancing in the streets, and tinikling, which is one of the most distinctive traditional dances of the Philippines. The day was filled with cultural performances, with plenty to do in between, such enjoying the many rides and classic fair food staples such as flavoured lemonade and mini-doughnuts. By noon, even the sun itself joined the crowd, beaming its rays into a very packed and busy festival. Thank you to Magdaragat Philippines Incorporated for the invitation to join you at this performance. Congratulations to the organizations and volunteers behind Summer in the City for another successful year! Photo credit: Joseph G. Orobia of Break 4th Photography
BEA... From page 18 performed with as much soul of someone beyond her years. Her set consisted of power ballads from the likes of Alicia Keys, and also some lighter jazz classics, including her audition piece for Maple Sugar, the jazz choir of Maples Collegiate. She also accompanied herself on piano, showing her versatility in the musical field. At one point, early in the evening, the music system had given out while she was performing, and it was so heart warming to hear the audience clap a steady beat and sing along with her, encouraging and allowing her to finish the last part of her song. That’s the quality of a genuinely supportive audience that even seasoned performers still appreciate. We had the opportunity to interview Bea Jaime about her experiences so far. Pilipino Express (PE): How old were you when you realized you wanted to sing? Bea Jaime (BJ): I was five when I realized that singing was something I will always look forward to, and love. At that age, it almost felt therapeutic, where it always made me feel good. PE: If you were to choose an artist to perform with (past or present) who would it be and why? BJ: I have two ladies in mind: it would be Lea Salonga or Beyoncé. Lea has inspired me endlessly ever since I was a
little girl. Who wouldn’t want to sing with a Disney Princess?! As for Beyoncé, it’s because she’s Beyoncé. She’s the total package, humble and a great role model! PE: Who has been your greatest musical influence? BJ: My greatest music influence would definitely be my older sister, Vienna. At the age of three, I saw her sing karaoke, which got me very curious. So being the annoying little sister, I would take the mic away from her and just sing out. PE: When you are on stage, performing, how do you calm your nerves? BJ: I don’t have a secret method to calm my nerves down on stage. However, before I perform, I pray and hope for the best! PE: What has been the most valuable experience for you so far? BJ: So far, the most valuable experience would be getting accepted to be a part of #teamCanada! Preparing for the competition gave me a lot of experience and exposure. Being qualified is absolutely an honour! I’m hoping to represent the country with pride and wishing to make everybody proud! *** Thank you to the Jaime family for allowing Pilipino Express to cover the event and to feature Bea Jaime in our newspaper. We are so glad to have been a part of her journey to WCOPA. We wish you all the best, Bea, as you represent Team Canada!
Well-wishes for WCOPA By Judianne Jayme Pilipino Express would like to send our best wishes and congratulations to Team Canada as our national representatives make their way down to Hollywood for the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA). The annually held event, often dubbed the Olympics for Entertainment, is in its 19th year. It features performers who are personally invited by scouts and licensed national directors to participate in this international competition. There is a “Juniors” stream Paul Ong for contestants 15 and under, as well as a “Seniors” stream for those 16 and over. Contestants are vying for gold medals in categories such as dance, vocal, modeling, acting, comedy, bands, instrumental and variety, and can range from individual performers to groups of various ages. Judges at these events are often agents, producers, directors and others from the entertainment industry – those who have had specialized experience in the world of performing arts. Prizes include Olympic-style gold, medal, and bronze awards, as well as scholarships for renowned performing arts schools, and the overall title of Grand Champion Performer of the World titles in each category. Winnipeg is home to three of Team Canada’s contenders in the vocal competition: Paul Ong (Senior, 25-29 category), Bea Jaime (Junior), and Hannah Sagaral (Senior, 18-24 category). You have made our city proud and the title of representing our nation makes you all champions already. Best wishes from us at Pilipino Express as you make your mark on the international stage! Good luck, Team Canada, and all the best!

Naku, baka mabuhay ang KBL at united pa with NPC. Grace Poe.
Megastar See CRISTY p22

PEOPLE & EVENTS PILIPINO EXPRESS
Dinner with the Royals A meet and greet with the contestants for the Queen of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival pageant By Judianne Jayme A private event was held at Canton Buffet on June 25 to allow time for twelve contestants of the Queen of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival (MFSF) pageant to mingle with the panel of judges and members of the MFSF organizing committee. The event, hosted by the current ambassador of MFSF, the 2014 Queen, Julienne Reyes, was an intimate evening of conversations after a generous dinner provided by the board and committees behind the MFSF. The evening began with a welcome from Aida Champagne, who the girls lovingly call Tita Ganda. The festival, in its fourth year, is hosting its third pageant. The very first Queen crowned in 2013, Alyssa De Guzman, explained that the concept of the pageant came around the idea to have a face for the MFSF, a young woman who would act as an ambassador to the community event. I had the opportunity to meet with most of the girls in the time we had together. I asked a lot of them what led to their decision to join the pageant. A common thread was that these young women were looking for a way to get involved in the community. Pageants such as this provide an opportunity for young women to challenge themselves to step into the spotlight and be introduced to their community. When I asked about the
CRISTY... Madiing komento ng isang source, “iyon ang proof that money can’t buy everything.”
highlights of their time in the pageant so far, the girls had various answers that truly gave a sense of what this pageant has done for each individual’s personal development. Some of the girls really enjoyed the workshops they received around health and beauty. Others noted the skill they
are developing of thinking on their feet when asked questions. One thing that all contestants added to their answer was the relationships they are building together, supporting one another. They have truly built a sisterhood of princesses of sorts, gearing up for coronation night, where
I can foresee them celebrating each other’s accomplishments. This type of empowerment is how pageants, such as these, are breaking stereotypical ideas of setting up women in competition with each other. It is not about trying to overshadow each other; it’s about building each other up and encouraging each other. The coronation night will be on July 12 at the Canad Inns Polo Park. The members of the board of judges (in alphabetical order) are: Dr. Tricia MagsinoBarnabe, Angel Bathal, Mike Fabian, Emmie Joaquin, Justin
JULY 1 - 15, 2015 Merluza, Rowena Oquendo and a 7th judge who will be announced during the event. For their initiative and courage, all twelve of these young women are already winners. Best of luck to the contestants, and more power to you! Congratulations to the MFSF for winning the appeal and reclaiming McPhillips Street back for their event. We look forward to the event! Thank you to Mark Godilano Photography for the photographs, and for the committee for having us at this event.
The Queen of Manitoba Filipino Street Festival finalists with the members of the pageant’s board of judges
The MFSF organizing committee members with the Queen of MFSF’s panel of judges kaibigan ay pinagkukuwentuhan din ng mag-ama si Sharon Cuneta.
– CSF
