Ambassador Petronila Garcia in Winnipeg WINNIPEG – The Philippines’ new ambassador to Canada, Petronila Garcia, arrived in Winnipeg on October 12, 2015 with Toronto’s new Consul General, Rosalita Prospero, and the full Philippine diplomatic corps in Canada. So far, Ambassador Garcia has made courtesy calls to Manitoba’s Lieutenant Governor Janice Filmon, Premier Greg Selinger and cabinet ministers including Multiculturalism Minister Flor Marcelino, and Winnipeg Mayor Bowman. Aside from the consular outreach sessions running from October 15 to 19 at the PCCM, the ambassador will attend a two-day conference on consular consultations and economic diplomacy. Ambassador Garcia returns to Ottawa on October 19.

WINNIPEG – An estimated 3.6 million people voted during four days of advance polls between Friday, October 9 to Thanksgiving Monday, representing a 71 per cent increase over three days of advance polling in 2011, according to Elections Canada. The increased turnout at advance polls may indicate just how much more seriously Canadians are treating this tight election race over the 2011 federal election when only about 61 per cent of eligible voters bothered to cast a vote. It was among the lowest turnouts in this country’s history. The higher turnout is also remarkable in light of the Harper government’s stricter election rules regarding voter identification, under Bill C-23. One provision of the original version of that bill attempted to strip Elections Canada of its mandate to promote voting, but it was removed before

Objectifying women Anyone who has been to a traditional political campaign in the Philippines can attest to the fact that these things are often no more than variety shows where the old song-and-dance routine is employed to great effect. Political candidates, in an effort to attract a crowd that, hopefully, would vote for them, hire all sorts of celebrities and performers to provide entertainment in between speeches. There would be singers, dancers, actors and actresses, models, and of course, “sexy dancers.” It is this last group that provides the risqué kind of diversion that the men in the audience are presumed to lap up. In a male-dominated political landscape, such a practice comes as no surprise and has indeed been tacitly encouraged through the years and in countless election campaign periods. After all, it gets the crowds in, and a large crowd is seen as a sign of a candidate’s popularity with the voters. The case of the Liberal Party’s use of such dancers, therefore, is not an isolated case. Indeed, virtually all parties and individual candidates have, in one way or another, used scantily clad women to attract people to their sorties. That we have not questioned this up till a few days ago is actually an indictment on us as a people;

we have, in fact, come to accept “sexy dancers” as part and parcel of political campaigns, and that the exploitation of women is acceptable in advancing the careers of our politicians. If we are actually serious about making the LP pay for its most recent infraction, then we must take all other parties to task for doing the same thing. More than that, we must look at all aspects of our social life and see where we are actually exploiting women — often without us realizing it. Noontime shows, movies, advertisements — even a superficial review of these media will show us that women are being exploited and treated as mere sex objects in so many ways, and we are patronizing them just the same. Even something as mainstream as a beauty contest can be seen as nothing more than the objectification of women. Women don’t have to be scantily clad to be objectified; it is enough that they are used as mere decoration and crowd-pleasers and gatherers for it to count as exploitation. It is time we realize that we have been treating our women badly publicly. Is this a lost cause? I certainly hope not. Perhaps it is fortuitous that the LP is being harangued over the issue because it could force us all to look deeper into

ourselves and see if we are not actually guilty of the same thing. International Day of No Prostitution Speaking of exploitation (and our tendency to look away), many of us didn’t realize that October 5 was International Day of No Prostitution. As commemorations go, it was, to quote the Bard, more honor’d in the breach than in the observance. Prostitution, after all, is not called the world’s oldest profession for no reason: serving one of man’s most basic urges, it is easy to peddle and just as easy to acquire. And by the admission of the two main groups in Davao City advocating for the rights of abused and prostituted women and children, it was virtually impossible to expect the flesh trade to cease even for a day. The reasons are varied but they boil down to two things: one, women who are forced into prostitution need to work in order to supply the needs of their families, and two, there are always men who will engage their services. The first reason is a complex web that can only be addressed in a holistic manner. In a very real sense it would take overhauling the entire nation — enough to be able to address the needs of the poorest of the poor, the sector to which most prostituted women belong. Government must necessarily improve its services so that no person is forced to sell

her or his body just to survive. As is often said, no person would allow herself or himself to be abused for a few measly pesos if there were other means to keep body and soul together. But because the work required to achieve this is so massive, it would be easy to say that there is simply no way to eradicate prostitution. There is, however, a second reason the flesh trade is thriving, and it is in this area that headway can be gained simply by a change in attitude. If no one engages the services of a prostituted woman, then the trade itself would die a natural death. Like any other business, prostitution thrives on demand; if there were no market for it, then no one would offer the service. This, of course, is easier said than done. Men will be men, so we are told, and they will always descend to their baser instincts when the opportunity presents itself. Which is why the proposal to penalize men who patronize prostituted women should be supported. It has always been the women — those who are the victims — who end up being rounded up for engaging in the flesh trade; it is time the real perpetrators are punished. A new Filipino immigrant to Winnipeg stepped off the plane, took a look around his new home province, and muttered, “Man, ito ba?” Manitoba and the Canadian Prairies are often the targets of jokes, both from residents and those living in other provinces. For some, the long, endless prairies; short, hot summers; and long, cold winters have no appeal. But the truth of it is that there are a lot of good things in Manitoba. It is a glorious thing to be able to go 15 minutes outside of Winnipeg and see the point where the land and sky meet. And while I have never truly become “used” to the deep cold (or snow banks) of a prairie winter, I also never tire of fall in Winnipeg. At this time of the year, I often think of those welcome newcomers to our city, especially those who have never experienced an autumn or winter here. This time of year presents a number of challenges to immigrants in the city, especially those who are not forewarned

about what to expect and how best to prepare for it. There is nothing new about this. In the first year of the Red River Settlement – the first major European settlement in what is now Manitoba – settlers rushed to build proper living quarters to stave off temperatures that fell as low as -50º C. Indeed, many of France’s first colonies in North America in the 1600s failed because the colonists were unprepared for the harsh winter conditions, and those who survived had to rely on the help of the earlier-arrived Dutch settlers in what is now New York, or the local indigenous populations. Sometimes, information about what to expect when that plane lands in Canada is unclear or mixed up. I heard one immigrant to Ontario from Latin America tell a story about how all their friends and family warned them about how cold Canada was. Listening to this advice, the family disembarked the plane wearing winter coats, snow pants, boots, gloves and toques. Unfortunately, it was early August

and the temperatures were well above 25º C. While stories like this are told with a sense of humour (especially many years after), other experiences aren’t always so. In some of my interviews with community members, I’ve heard stories of how families were unprepared for just how cold it got. Of course, the meaning of cold is relative; to a Winnipeger, “cold” might be lower than -20º C; for someone from Southern Ontario, below -10º C is “cold” (to be fair, Toronto area winters are very humid and chill the bones!); but for someone from Manila, for example, “cold” might mean staying overnight in Baguio City. Recent Filipino immigrants to the city often have family or friends already living here to help them adjust, but sometimes simple facts like how much one should wear on a cold day is not shared. This time of year can be a little deceiving and even confusing for some. For example, yesterday the temperature rose well above 20º C, yet as I write this now I’m wearing a sweater with my home’s central heating on as I tuck in from the cold fall day outside. One must be ready for the coming winter though, because dangers such as frostbite are real and can occur fairly quickly. For

those who rely on public transit for transportation, this is a particularly a concern, especially as Winnipeg Transit continues to struggle with its bus fleet and waiting times may continue to be longer than usual at bus stops. To prepare for Winnipeg winter, it is best to ensure that you and your children are properly dressed: this includes a well insulated pair of boots with a good grip and dry socks; warm pants and even an extra layer of snow pants; a proper winter jacket and sweater underneath; and a good pair of winter gloves and a toque to cover your head and ears (balaclavas are also nice, covering your whole face). In short, layer up! Cover up! Frost can happen quicker than we can realize, especially with children, and with Manitoba’s notorious wind chill, one must be prepared. Also, it is safest to avoid clothing made of cotton, especially for children – cotton absorbs moisture quickly (like melting snow on gloves), and dries slowly in the cooler temperatures, meaning wet clothes. New winter clothes can be expensive, so don’t hesitate to ask those you know if they have extra clothing, or to visit used clothing stores such as Value Village and Salvation Army. Too old for sex? Dear Ate Anna, At what age should couples stop having sex? I am 62 years old and my wife has just turned 60. She seems to think that it is OK for our sex life to slow down because we are getting to “that age.” Is that true? Sincerely, Sam Dear Sam, Thank you for your question. The answer is that there is no specific age at which people should stop having sex. In fact, a healthy sexual relationship can positively affect a person’s life, including physical health and self esteem, at any age. Our sexuality is a very personal thing and different people make different choices throughout their life. Some people may have only one sexual partner during their lifetime while other people may have several. Some people believe that sex is only for reproduction while others believe it is also about pleasure and/or showing love for a partner. As well, abstinence (not having sex)

is a valid choice for people at any age. It is a common belief that older people are not interested in sex or that it is not appropriate to be interested in a sexual relationship after a certain age. However, older adults today are often still very active, still doing many of the things they enjoyed during their younger years. That includes enjoying intimate relationships that may include sex. There are many cultural messages – e.g. jokes, customs, religious teaching – that reinforce the message that sex is only for the young or for reproduction. Advertising also sends the message that sexual dysfunction is an inevitable part of aging. There are changes in sexual response and interest that happen as a person ages. However, these changes happen gradually. If a couple has information, they can talk to each other about how the changes affect their sexual relationship and they can easily adapt to them. Unfortunately, many older couples let their See ATE ANNA p6

Electronic Travel Authorization Did you know that soon all visitors might require a visa to enter Canada? Of course, readers will be surprised that persons from Japan, Greece, Germany, Israel, Poland, Korea et al, will soon require visas. What happened to the distinction between visitors from visaexempt countries and those from visa-required countries like the Philippines? Before you all panic, the distinction between the two groups of countries will continue. However, visitors exempt from the requirement to obtain a temporary resident visa (TRV) will have to obtain the new electronic travel authorization (eTA) before entering Canada. The application process has been in place since August of this year and the eTA will become fully operational by March 15, 2016. The approach will allow Canada to better screen persons on risk and make it easier for low-risk travelers to enter Canada.

The eTA is similar in concept to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization or ESTA currently used in the United States of America. The preapproval system is only required for persons from visa-exempt countries, excluding the United States. A fee of only $7.00 will be required, so this is does not appear to be a “cash grab.” The eTA will be valid for a period of five years from the date of issuance or until the earliest of the following: date of passport expiration; date electronic travel authorization was cancelled; or the day on which a new electronic authorization is issued. The government of Canada also announced a number of exemptions for the eTA requirement. These include: nationals of the United States; individuals inside Canada in possession of a Canadian temporary resident visa; designated foreign diplomats; commercial air crew; French

citizens who are resident of St. Pierre and Miquelon; individuals in possession of a United States visa on a flight bound for that country in transit through Canada; individuals who are in possession of any visa required to enter the country of destination also travelling through Canada as passengers by air; individuals carrying out official duties as a member of the armed forces of a country that is designated under the Visiting Forces Act; study or work permit holders re-entering Canada following a visit solely to the United States, or St. Pierre and Miquelon; and Her Majesty in right of Canada and other members of the Royal Family. The eTA application contains, as expected, an identification area with status, occupation, employer or school name, passport number etc. There are also questions related directly to screening, such as whether the applicant “previously applied to enter or remain in Canada”; “funds available for travel in Canada”; “have you been refused

a visa or study or work permit, denied entry or ordered to leave Canada or any other country”; “have you ever committed, been arrested for, been charged with or convicted of any criminal offence in any country”; “have you or any family member ever had or been in close contact with a person with tuberculosis; or “do you have a health condition for which you are receiving regular or ongoing medical treatment.” All these questions are interesting because they may the reasons why visitors from visa-exempt countries are denied admission. It is better to screen in advance and save valuable time at the port of entry. It should be noted that the number of visa-exempt foreign visitors far exceed those coming from the Philippines and other visa-required countries. For example, visa-exempt foreign nationals represent roughly 74 per cent of those who arrive by air and this number does not include those from the United States. Who knows, $7.00 per eTA might

turn out to be a major source of revenue. The government’s reason for implementing the eTA was to minimize chances for visitors to be refused admission. In 2012 and 2013 the number of visa-exempt individuals denied admission was 7,055. If you want to know more, read about the changes at www. cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index.asp. Note that if you are a dual citizen of Canada and a visa-exempt country, you are expected to use your Canadian passport. Mindfulness in the classroom We live in a world where the only thing consistent is the rapid amount of change that occurs in our immediate and larger surroundings. We have high-speed cars, high-speed Internet at our fingertips, and a network of information that we can readily access at any given time. Advertisements on YouTube allow you to “Skip Ad” after 10 seconds, the average time spent on most commercials found on television. This means that we

push our minds to move at faster speeds (10-second turnover rates) – processing information faster than the generation before us. In all this processing, it’s easy to burn out. In a regular classroom, any educator also knows that as much as kids’ brains are developing and making neural connections, we are also in competition for their attention. Even without a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD),

the daily barrage of social media networks, billboards, advertisements, YouTube videos, games, and television shows are enough to encourage young brains to seek new stimuli every ten seconds. How does an educator keep up? I choose to practice mindfulness in my classrooms. There’s a series of professional development workshops in many divisions regarding mindfulness – practices that cultivate deepened awareness, concentration, and insight. This can be as simple as ringing a chime and having students concentrate on waiting for the very last second they

Weather is truly an aspect of integrating into a new country. Getting used to the changing, and quite frankly crazy, weather patterns of Manitoba is part of the process of becoming “Canadian.” And when you consider that newcomers from the Philippines are coming from a tropical climate, it is understandable why Anita Chen in 1998 titled her book on Filipino immigration to Canada From Sunbelt to Snowbelt. While weather may not define a person, exposure and acclimatization to drastically different weather patterns make up part of the immigrant experience. Being prepared for and informed about Winnipeg winters will allow new Filipino families to create cherished memories of their first snowfall (and, sorry to say, first ridiculous Winnipeg blizzard), first

ice skating, and time-old practices of tobogganing, having a snowball fight, or making snowmen. Welcome to Winter-Peg! Winnipeg, Winter-Peg for a reason. Just like autumn, with the changing colours and falling leaves, winter can be a beautiful time of year. For me, there is nothing much more magical than the year’s first snowfall or waking up to hoarfrost on your trees outside. I know I’m not alone in this; time and again I’ve heard how new immigrants to the city have relished the city’s first snow fall, experienced how much fun skating on the Red River in December for the first time is, and indeed how Filipinos quickly adapt to winter like pros. One community member has even told me that, after having lived in Canada for so long, they are no longer able to take the heat of the Philippines.

hear the sound. I also have a homemade snowglobe-esque type of Mason jar filled with different coloured glitter. Students know that when they need a break, or need to calm down, they can come to the standing desk, shake the jar, and take deep breaths while they wait for all the glitter to settle. I have found that this, in particular, has worked wonders for myself as well! Once the glitter settles, students are usually ready to return to their task or their group, or to have an important conversation. It’s amazing what we can accomplish when we take control of our brain through mindfulness. Parent tip: Slow down! We are always rushed. My

advice for this week is to allow time to slow down. That could mean doing a peaceful activities such as reading together, doing some meditation or yoga, etc., as a family. These two activities mentioned are simple to do yet encourage healthy lifestyle choices – an appreciation for literature, along with an appreciation for mental and physical health. Whatever you choose to do, promote concentration and awareness using positive activities, and support and lead your children through the process. Worries about sex after a heart attack sometimes end a couple’s sex life. Most experts say that sex is no more strenuous than taking a brisk walk or climbing up one or two flights of stairs. In fact, like other forms of mild exercise, sexual activity can be good for the heart – physically and emotionally – as long as the doctor says it’s safe. Ready ka na ba? I must admit that, just like everyone else, I have also dreamed about one day winning the lottery and retiring in luxury. Lahat naman tayo nangagarap di ba? However, after our brief flight of fantasy has passed, we must deal with the reality of making a living and saving for our retirement. The future is uncertain and we don’t know if there will be a downturn in the economy that will reduce the value of our current retirement savings or if the current Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) system will still be around when it’s our turn to retire. So, what do we do? Planning for our retirement is very important. Whether it’s through individual means such as an RRSP or TFSA or if it means finding a good job with a company that provides a pension to its employees. Regardless of which option you wish to pursue, the root of a good retirement is having a good job or career at the present time. The next questions become, “Do you like your career?” “Are you in a dead-end job?” “Could you be making more money elsewhere?” “Are you willing to take the risk?” Every now and then, we have to take a moment to evaluate our situation to answer these questions. I have many clients who come to see

me after they have taken the time to self-reflect and have made a big decision. Some want to consult regarding their existing employment contract and what their rights and restrictions would be if they left their employer. Others want to discuss how they can start up their own business or buy an existing business. If becoming your own boss is your dream, do you know where to start? The first question you have to ask yourself is, “What type of business do you want to have?” Once you have made that decision, you then need to determine how you want to legally structure your business. There are three general types of legal entities a business can take – sole-proprietorship, partnership or corporation. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. This article will briefly touch upon each one. Sole proprietor A sole proprietor is a business that is owned and operated by one person. You are taxed on your personal income and your business has no legal identity separate from yourself. Also, if the business is sued your personal assets are not protected against any damages awarded against you. Consider for example that you own a renovation company and you are sued. If the court rules against you for an amount valued greater than the value of

about sex. There are many sexual activities that feel pleasurable and help a couple feel physically intimate. In fact, many older couples say they enjoy a new freedom and greater satisfaction in their sexual relationship when they no longer make intercourse the focus of their sexual activity. Of course, people who are starting a sexual relationship with a new partner, or have more than one sexual partner, need to use condoms as protection against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. So, you can see that the answer to your question is not a simple one. Based on personal beliefs and circumstances, some people will choose not to be sexually active in their later years while others will continue to have an active sex life or, possibly, begin a new sexual relationship. While it is true that sex won’t be the same as it was during a person’s 20’s or 30’s, that doesn’t mean it can’t be as enjoyable (or more enjoyable). A good sexual relationship can enhance a person’s physical and emotional well being at any age. Take care, Ate Anna Ate Anna welcomes your questions and comments. Please

your business assets, the court will allow your personal assets (such as your home and car) to be used to pay the damages. Although a sole proprietorship is easy and inexpensive to set up, the law considers the owner and the business to be one entity for tax purposes. Consequently, the owner’s personal assets are not protected from potential court damages. Partnership A partnership is the second type of legal entity. A partnership can be made up of two or more individuals who agree to go into business together. The partnership, just like a sole proprietorship, is not a separate legal entity from the owners. Each partner is taxed personally for the profits or losses of the partnership. Each partner is also personally liable for any damages resulting from the partnership. When setting up a partnership, it is advisable for the partners to enter into a comprehensive partnership agreement. Corporation The third type of legal entity for a business is a corporation. A corporation is considered

a separate legal entity from its owners (who are called shareholders). As a separate legal entity, the corporation is considered separate from its shareholders for tax purposes and for liability purposes. A corporation is the legal entity that will protect its shareholders the most. However, it is also the most expensive to set up. The corporation will need to be created and corporate documents will need to be drawn up. If you are seriously considering setting up a business, you should talk to a lawyer to discuss the pros and cons about each type of business entity available. The general information in this article is a good starting point but each person’s situation is unique. So before you commit to such a huge step, make sure you are ready. Take the time to consult with a variety of people such as a business advisor, an employment councillor, your financial advisor, your lawyer and your family. The key to a successful transition from being an employee to an employer is to have a full and complete business plan. After learning about the

different types of structures your business can take, you then have to ask yourself, “Am I ready to take that leap of faith?” Feng shui, your stove, and your kitchen god Chinese traditions abound around kitchens like making sure you always keep your rice urn full. The kitchen is a super-charged room. It’s the room everyone is always in every single day. It also stores your food, a source of both wealth and health. One such tradition is the story about Zao Jun, who is also known as the “god of the kitchen.” When he was a mortal man, Zao Jun was called Zhang Lang. He lived in the 2nd century BC. He was married to a good woman but then left her for someone younger. Because he left his first wife, who was dutiful and virtuous, he was punished with blindness and misfortune. Eventually, his younger wife left him and he became a beggar. One day while begging, he came across his first wife whom he didn’t recognize because of his blindness. She took him in and cooked him a meal and took care of him. He told his wife his sad story of his life and his remorse for his misdeeds. When she heard him apologize for how he’d wronged her, she told him to open his eyes and when he did, his sight was restored. But having seen his wife and her kindness to him even after his betrayal, he threw himself on the kitchen fire in shame for his actions when he was younger. From this story Zhang Lang, the mortal, became known as Zao Jun, the god of the kitchen or god of the stove. It’s also why he’s often depicted in photographs between two women or with one woman. For the Chinese, there are many traditions based around the kitchen and stove that are important in feng shui, too. The kitchen is a symbol of how we care for ourselves, and the way we treat our resources, like food and money. The kitchen, in short, represents our wealth, and the health and wellbeing of our family.

Are we wise with our food? Do we replenish food as needed? Are we letting food get old or stale? Are our kitchens dirty? Some people like to buy a lot of food and then throw it away. That’s wasteful, not to mention bad feng shui. Some like to fritter their money on specialty food items that aren’t used very often and that also represent wasted money. And then some buy what they need, eat it, and then replenish their pantry and refrigerators. This is a very good feng shui way to treat food, as it gives respect to the valuable resource that it is — and to our health. Keep your kitchen god happy — and you, more prosperous and healthy too, by observing these feng shui kitchen and stove tips. Watch for clashes of fire and water. The stove, in particular, is the source of the fire, the ability to transform our food to nourishment and delicious meals. Avoid keeping pots of water, such as teapots on the stove. It’s important that the fire energy of the stove remains strong, but not too strong. Water left on the stove, such as in a teapot represents the fire being put out on the stove. Utilize all your stove’s burners. We often use one or two burners on our stoves, but try to avoid that. Use all the burners regularly to keep the stove energy strong in your home. Avoid damaged, dented or scratched pans and utensils. When you cook with pots and pans that are damaged, you impart that damaged chi to your food, making it less appealing to you. The damage extends to the food that’s cooked in the pans. Further, scratched non-stick pans can actually be dangerous and seep the non-stick coating into your food.

Throw them away. Move the kitchen trash away from the stove. The stove represents clean, new, healthful food. Your kitchen trashcan represents unused, old or rotting food. Keep them away from one another. Make sure the stove and sink don’t face one another. This can cause the man and woman of the house to fight and argue. Although popular in decorating and design circles, this is a taboo in feng shui. Hang a faceted crystal between the two, and if there’s room, consider adding an island here with a stone top to stop the bickering and the clash of fire and water. Keep the hearth fire lit. A stove represents the hearth and fire in a home. For that reason, keep a small nightlight on in the kitchen even during the night time to represent the burning embers that provide heat and cook your food. A dark, cold kitchen represents ill health. Throw away small bits of food. Have a jar of jelly with just a tablespoon or two left in it? Avoid restocking your pantry or refrigerator with almost-empty jars. Either use the food up or throw it away. Almost empty jars represent loss of wealth. Keep your stove clean. This is vital. If your stove and oven are dirty and grimy, they impart negative chi to your food and that brings down your personal energy, prosperity and the chi of your food. Be wary of too much fire. Feng shui is always about balance. There can be too much of a good thing — like too much water or too much fire. Some feng shui experts recommend placing mirrors to reflect the stove’s burners in the belief that this doubles the food, thereby signifying wealth. But this practice only doubles the fire element, not the food. If

Take teakettles off your stove when not in use as they represent putting out the fire in your stove, hurting your wealth and prosperity.

Kitchen-god: Zao-Jun you want to double the food you see, place a mirror in the dining room instead. A little fire keeps the house warm and cooks your food. Too much fire can burn the house down and create arguments and tension. Keep your fire element under control. Kathryn Weber is the publisher of the Red Lotus Letter

The laws of authority There are three kinds of people in any sector of authority. The Outsiders, the Inbetweeners and the Insiders. The Outsiders are persuaded into making emotional decisions that they defend logically afterwards, embrace a sheep mentality and follow the leader. The Inbetweeners are the action takers, becoming more consciously aware of their environment and are learning from experience. The Insiders are the innovators,

the leaders, and they acknowledge that they become the average of their closest companions in business, career and life. A mental chasm separates any particular person in these distinct groups. The authority paradox says that those without power desperately cling on to any and all control in life while those with achieved authority in life know that they become amplified when they learn to assign authority out willingly.

This is the reason why the impoverished fight to the death over scarce resources and why the world’s most powerful performers have duplicated themselves by mentoring and training other leaders to take command of their campaigns. For instance: John Maxwell Impact Leadership Company and Robert Kiyosaki Rich Dad Education. Your ability to make a difference in your business, career and life is dependent on the perspective you have on the subject of authority. You may want to concern yourself with two broad types of authority. Linear authority and leveraged authority

Linear authority is short-lived and is carried out on a one to one basis. The authority figure in this case must be present most of the time in order to maintain power and ensure that their directives are undertaken. This form of authority is unsustainable and is a non-renewable resource. Leveraged Authority is made known through the science of duplication. The authority figure in this scenario has trained trainers and this is an example of exponential power. They’ve now employed leaders who have the ability to exercise high-level decisions without the authority figure needing to be present. The figure at this most can remove him or

herself from the frontline and work on their business, career and life and not be entrenched in it. Business, Success & Money message I’ll leave you with this principle for duplication. Here’s a prolific parable to illustrate things: “Give a man a fish he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish he will eat for a lifetime, teach a man how to teach a man to fish and he will feed the whole village!” Valen Vergara is an award winning author, social entrepreneur, international investor, co-host of the movie Game Changer, speaker and B2C Marketer – www.valenvergara. com.

Young activists strive to put women’s issues in the spotlight By Anne Caprice B. Claros Margaret Mead, a well respected American cultural anthropologist once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” On Tuesday, October 6th, members of OxfamUofM, a social justice student group in University of Manitoba, set up an installation asking the question, “Is a woman’s hour worth the same as a man’s?” Students and members of the community were asked to vote, by signing their names, or writing a message on the banner. Unsurprisingly, there was unanimous agreement on what the answer is – Yes. Bonded together by their admirable ambition of encouraging local communities to think more and talk more about issues pertaining to women, other Oxfam Canada student groups in cities like Halifax, St. John’s, Ottawa and, Vancouver also had installations set up asking similar questions. This is part of a bigger campaign called, Up For Debate, an alliance for women’s rights, in which Oxfam Canada is a leading member. Up For Debate is a campaign focused on putting women’s

rights in the spotlight for the upcoming federal election. It is undeniable that women in Canada face inequality and battle against discrimination. It is time that these issues be talked about and be appropriately addressed by the political party leaders. The campaign encourages women and men to ask questions, speak up on issues that matter to them, and to put women’s issues front and centre in the upcoming election. It is necessary that awareness be raised; violence against women and the widening gender pay gap are among many things that can no longer be hidden from the public’s eyes. Canada has one of the worst records in the developed world when it comes to pay equality. The last time party leaders had a debate on women’s issues was in 1984. The Up For Debate event was held on September 21st, video interviews with Elizabeth May from the Green Party, Thomas Mulcair from the NDP, Gilles Duceppe from Bloc Quebecois and Justin Trudeau from the Liberal Party, were broadcasted to the public and a panel including activists and social justice experts discussed the responses. The party leaders addressed concerns that were identified by women such as violence against women,

L-R: Nasser Barakat, Kristen Webster, Daniel Namwira, Romik Babakhanians & Anne Caprice Claros childcare and, women’s political participation. Considering that 51 per cent of the population is women, and percentage-wise are over represented in voting, only signifies the need to address women’s issues. Oxfam believes ending global poverty begins with women’s rights. We recognize the need for

laws and policies that also put women at the forefront. We strive to empower women and challenge societal norms. We believe that together we can create a world free of inequality. No one ever said that making a difference is easy. It takes time, devotion and determination. However, the most difficult thing

is deciding if you want to be part of the movement wanting change. The issues are undeniable, we have asked the questions; the dialogue has begun. It is now up to you to keep it going! For further questions please contact visit oxfam.ca or send us an email at oxfamuofm@gmail. com.

Diversity at its finest “Diversity can be defined as people coming together from different races, nationalities, religions and sexes to form a group, organization or community.” – The Importance and Benefits of Diversity, TeenInk.com. Everyone seems excited when they get to see a new place. You’re ready to take pictures, selfies, make memories, and try to make the most of the time there. As immigrants, we do kind of get the “excitement feeling,” but a ton of things also seem to come into mind. A new place can mean new work, environment, weather, social life, and even school life. These things are just temporary but sometimes, we still fear that we may be changed by the new place

that we often hide our identity and culture or forget it permanently. This past year, I joined a youth forum that focused on FilipinoCanadian culture put on by ANAK whose sole purpose is to preserve and advocate Filipino heritage through education amongst the youth. I was surrounded by a crowd I never knew my whole life, but the only comparison we had is that we were in fact new to the place and to the country. In Winnipeg, where ice and snow meets, you might be thinking, “Who can live in this kind of weather?” Others say it’s fine, that it’s not even that cold. But on the opposite side, they keep saying that this is just bad. Although the Winterpeg climate is unpredictable and especially long,

a much warmer fire burns inside the hearts of the community. The Filipino Community! Known for their resiliency and strong will, even the fiercest storms cannot outmatch their undying perseverance (like literally). The Filipino community is considered the third of largest group living in Winnipeg and has caused a lot of impact to it. With each passing year, Filipinos immigrate abroad to places like Winnipeg to work for their hopes, dreams, and opportunities for their families, even affecting their workplace and the city they live. With them, they bring and share the Philippine culture. As one tourist might say, “We should visit the landmarks, but let’s eat first.” Touring around parts of the city, the restaurants, buffets, and cattering, either small, large, or just opening in business, Filipino cuisine dominates just as how

received a voter information card by mail as of October 1. The card tells voters when and where to vote. Voters can also find out where to vote using the online Voter Information Service at www.elections.ca. Following the Robocall scandal of 2011, any unsolicited phone calls instructing citizens where and when to vote should be regarded with suspicion. Voters can also register at the

(https://ereg.elections.ca) Whether registered or not, voters must identify themselves with at least: a driver’s licence; a provincial or territorial ID card or; any other government card with photo, name and current address. we hungry customers dominate the food. According to an article by Noah Crappe, host of the Food Network producing The Great Canadian Cookbook said, “In Winnipeg alone through the Filipino community, there’s unbelievable food.” With every boldness and unique flavour of our dishes, like the bittersweet sinigang, adobo, or inasal (smoked chicken), or desserts like halo-halo, the uniqueness of these dishes amazes anyone who eats them. Just like my Canadian classmate would say, “it’s weird, but delicious!” Like food, the Pinoy culture is rich through dance and songs. In the past few weeks, the multicultural event of the year known as Folklorama was held near the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba showcasing our art and exotic taste of our rich culture. You might be saying that Winnipeg is just a different place;

like you won’t see your culture, the style, and the way of living you grew up with in the Philippines. But, as a matter in fact, this city is thriving with Filipinos. Winnipeg can be your Filipino home too. With so much likeness to back home, this can also be like the place that you left before. You might be saying, how about the Filipinos who were born here? Won’t they have a hard time understanding our own culture? Well, what can I say? The good thing is that they don’t need to go back to the Philippines to learn about it – it’s already here! Just like what the lyric tells me on my time in the youth forum, “No matter where we are, we’re still Filipino.” Ernest Pasague is a Grade 12 student at St John’s High School. He is both active in school and community volunteering, both inside and outside of Winnipeg. Last summer, he participated in ANAK’s annual Youth Forum. Visit www.anak.ca.

See CRISTY p19

Isidra Vergara

May 15, 1929 – September 30, 2015 On September 30th, at age 86, Isidra Vergara, our beloved Nanay, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour. She will be deeply missed by her eight children, Loddie, Zita (Greg), Onie (Crisel), Larry (Majola), Mercedes, Cris (Jason), Conrad (Lorna), Nita (Eric); 24 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren; sisters and brother; nieces, nephews; friends, loved ones and all those her life has touched. Words cannot express how much her loving spirit, pure heart, and gentle smile will be missed. We thank God that we had so many years to laugh with you, love and be loved, and although we wish we had more time with you, we rejoice that you are in the arms of Jesus surrounded by your angels. Bless you dearest Nanay, you will always be remembered. Our sincere gratitude is expressed to Dr. Catherine Wach and her staff for their compassionate and loving care. “Remember now, O Lord, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what is good in Your sight” (Isaiah 38:2). It was Isidra’s request that cremation take place. She will be taken home to the Philippines to be laid to rest beside her late husband Conrado and her parents. Efren Peñaflorida, Jr. and his amazing journey By: Lucille Nolasco He could have been a fearsome gangster. Instead, he became a fearless hero. Efren Peñ+aflorida, Jr. – dedicated teacher, social worker and 2009 CNN Hero of the Year, is in Winnipeg to share his amazing journey from poverty and hopelessness to being a global hero and champion of the youth. “I am here to share our story, about the program we do in Cavite, our Kariton Klasrum (mobile classroom in a push cart),” said Efren. “Our main objective is to bring basic education to poor and underprivileged children and rekindle their interest to go back to school.” From teen advocate to CNN Hero Growing up poor in Cavite City – Cavite in the Philippines near an open dumpsite – Efren would often play surrounded by garbage and swim in polluted waters. He was also a victim of neighbourhood bullies, many of whom were being groomed to join street gangs that were prevalent in the area. He thought of revenge countless times until he met Harnin ‘Kuya Bonn’ Manalaysay. Fondly called KB, he became Efren’s mentor and taught the young lad there are more positive ways to get revenge. In 1997, at 16 years old, Efren established the Dynamic Teen Ministry with a handful of high school classmates, aimed at diverting students’ attention away from street gangs and towards community activism and personal development. The group offered youth awareness projects, talent and self-development activities and community services. They eventually pioneered the idea of Kariton Klasrum, wherein pushcarts were filled with books, pens, paper, tables, chairs and

other school materials and rolled every Saturday to recreate school settings in unconventional locations such as the trash dump and cemetery. “The first time we pushed those carts, we were laughed at, even our parents and teachers discouraged us. Rocks were thrown at us, and we were cursed at on the streets,” shared Efren. “The school supplies and other expenses all came from our own pockets.” It was not until Efren was named CNN Hero of the Year for 2009 that everything turned around for the better. The award came with $100,000 cash to continue his work with Dynamic Teen Company. Interviews and accolades from different parts of the world poured in. And back home in the Philippines, the hecklers became staunch supporters. Local and national governments started taking real interest. “Those who taunted us now tell us, ‘you’re doing a good job! Others take selfies or groupies with us. And our program is now being replicated by various institutions, especially the Department of Education in the Philippines, where there’s 90 replications at present, some are on-going and others are in the planning process.” Efren clarifies that the goal of the program is to get the children back to school and not as a replacement to a regular classroom. “It’s only a temporary solution. We see this as a bridge, a way to entice children to love learning, particularly those who lost interest.” After three months under the Kariton Klasrum Program, the students will be evaluated for school-readiness. “There are so many kids who drop out of school for so

many reasons – poverty, parents pushing them to work at an early age. So it’s important that there’s somebody to pull them back.” Most recently, this past July, Kariton Klasrum’s pioneering concept was recognized as one of the best practices by UNESCO for the Southeast Asian region and is now being adapted by different countries to bring education in hard to reach areas in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Kenya and soon, said Efren, in Vietnam and Bangladesh. “I have been to Indonesia and Kenya, I facilitated the training. We’re happy about their enthusiastic acceptance of the program.” A teacher first With regular speaking invitations and training locally and abroad, Efren makes sure to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of his calling – that of being an educator. He recently spearheaded an open high school program for high school dropouts

in Cavite, wherein he serves as the headmaster. “This is what I’m currently busy with, aside from Kariton Klasrum replication. We have assigned volunteers for the replication training in different parts of the Philippines.” We could all be heroes At the IWC’s “A Heroes Welcome” for Efren on Saturday night (October 10th), many were inspired by this soft-spoken, humble hero as he shared his personal experiences, the friends he met and countless children and youth they help and mentor. Many of them are also paying it forward by volunteering and helping others just as they were helped. Like 16year old Kesz Valdez who fled from an abusive environment wen he was four years old. Now, Kesz leads his own volunteer project called “Championing Community Children” wherein street children are taught basic hygiene practice. Kesz also personally teaches them how to take care of themselves. In 2012, Kesz was awarded the International Children’s Peace

Prize. He was the first Southeast Asian to receive the prestigious award. That night, Efren shared the basic principles of being a true-tolife hero. And that is to act when you see a need, and to always do your B.E.S.T. Believe that you can. Make the move. Walk your talk. Excel in every work. Use whatever God-given talent, skills and gifts we have to help others. Stand firm to what is true and noble. No cheating! Character is what we are when nobody is watching. Protect our integrity at all times. Think of Ways to Improve. Do not rest on our laurels and prepare for more challenges ahead. We don’t have to possess super powers to be called a hero. Age does not really matter either. Young or old, we can all take a leap of faith. Just as KB took a chance to help Efren, we can also be our own kind of hero by seeing the potential in others. Just imagine what we could be.

sarili.

See CRISTY p20

– CSF

Paul Ong in Concert – What a night! By Emmie Joaquin It didn’t matter that it was raining hard all day and that the traffic along Osborne St. was jammed for hours, we made sure we wouldn’t miss Paul Ong’s solo concert at the Park Theatre on Wednesday, October 7, 2015. The show was scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. Ticket holders with umbrellas and hoodies – some dry, some were dripping wet – started arriving early, around 6 p.m. The overall mood in the theatre lobby was sunny. The Ong family and concert volunteers cheerfully greeted the public. It also became an opportunity for long-time friends in our community to see each other again. The concert began around 7:30 p.m. The theatre was filled to capacity. It was a sold out show. Everyone was excited to watch the vocalist who took the local community by storm this past summer – especially after Paul won accolades at the World Championship of Performing Arts in Long Beach USA in July. Paul Ong’s sister Geraldine opened the show and introduced the front act performers to warm up the audience: Carmen Feng, Ivy Hu, Vanessa Leung Shing, Shou Zhang, Zimo Han, Xiao Nan Wang, and the Great Wall Dance Academy of Canada. Then, the main feature began. Paul Ong opened his first set with the song Sway – a 1954 Pablo Beltran Ruiz composition originally sang by Rat Pack member, Dean Martin, and lately by Michael Buble. The audience loved it and one could feel that everyone was ready to embrace this 26-year-old and enjoy his music. The night looked very promising. Paul opened his heart on stage and immediately made a connection with his audience. Next he sang Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Waters and I could hear some baby boomers humming along with him and loving every note. Paul has always been proud of his Chinese ancestry and he did his own cover of classic Chinese medley and contemporary Chinese song that I totally enjoyed. His first set left his audience looking forward to more of his easy listening songs. Paul’s second set began with Frankie Valley’s Can’t Take My Eyes Off You prompting some of the audience members to sing along with him. Next, he sang Somewhere from West Side Story. Many of us remember him singing the same song that brought three “Yes!” votes from the judges of CityTV’s Canada’s Got Talent a few years ago. Dapper in his tux, Paul then sang his signature song This is the Moment, a song by Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse, and is the centerpiece of Frank Wildhorn and Steve Cuden’s

musical Jekyll & Hyde. Paul’s next offering was Rey Valera’s Pangako Sa ‘Yo – a song that seemed popular among his Pinoy audience who followed the ABS-CBN teleserye of the same title. He then proceeded with a Tagalog medley of top MetroPop OPM songs: Ryan Cayabyab’s Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika and Nonong Pedero’s Isang Mundo, Isang Awit. He finished his second set with the songs Never Say Goodbye and Frank Sinatra’s anthem My Way (composed by Canadian Paul Anka). His very appreciative audience gave Paul Ong a standing ovation. He obliged them with a final song, ABBA’s Thank You for the Music. As we all say, time flies when you’re having fun especially if you’re being entertained. It was a night of beautiful songs from this young man with a very beautiful voice. There was a real sense of excitement in the audience that loved every note and every minute of Paul Ong’s solo concert. Paul Ong did not disappoint, instead, he left his audience looking forward to seeing him, next time, on a bigger stage. Pilipino Express interviewed Paul Ong after the concert; here are some of his comments: PE: Congratulations, how do you feel right now? Paul Ong: “I feel great! The greatest fulfillment in performing is seeing that my audience enjoyed; and that I was able to touch their lives even for a moment through my performance.” PE: For a young man who is currently a Resource Teacher at General Wolfe School and taking his Masters in Education for Sustainable Well-Being at the University of Manitoba, how did you find time to prepare for this solo concert? Paul Ong: “I just did it. If we did all that we can do, we can be astounded by the possibilities of what we can do. Practice makes perfect and nothing can go wrong with hard work. More than the talent and skill, it is the attitude that makes success a reality.” PE: What do you think of your audience tonight? Paul Ong: “I am overwhelmed by their response and feedback. We might think that the performer is the main component of a show; however, without an audience, there wouldn’t be a show.” PE: What would you like to say to your family, volunteers and friends? Paul Ong: “It is with the strong support of people that brought me to where I am today. The only way to get better is to surround yourself with people who genuinely believe in you.” PE: Any message to your sponsors and supporters? Paul Ong: “Thank you for all the support and trust that you have given me. To all the people I consider as mentors. Thank you for always giving me

perspectives. And to my sponsors, thank you for always giving me opportunities!” PE: Lastly, any advice to singers who may be just as busy as you but just can’t find the opportunity to express their talent the way you do? Paul Ong: I have this life philosophy. I think that the true essence of life is being able to know our identity and purpose. We all have countless possibilities and limitless potentials; all we need to do is to identify and decide to pursue them. If we can think it, and we act on it, then, we can be it. Nothing is impossible.”
