Homo luzonensis Bones reveal ancient human species in the Philippines
12 12
Another branch of the human family tree has been established with the discovery of remains belonging to a previously unknown species in Callao cave in Peñablanca, Cagayan. Named Homo luzonensis, according to its location in Northern Luzon, the smallbodied hominin lived on the island at least 50 to 67 thousand years ago – the earliest known human cousins ever found in the Philippines. Researchers announced their discovery in the journal Nature on April 10, 2019. University of the Philippines archaeologist Armand Mijares made the initial discovery of a fossilized hominid foot bone in 2007. Further excavations in 2011 and 2015 uncovered two more toe bones along with seven teeth, two finger bones, and part of a femur. In total, the remains represent at least three individuals – two adults and one See FOSSILS p10

Holy Week traditions Growing up in Malabon, and near the neighbourhood church at that, I had my fair share of the traditions that Filipino communities mount during holidays and holy days. During the Christmas season in December, for example, crowds walking to the church to attend the pre-dawn mass punctuated the early mornings. The walk to the church was generally quiet, but coming home the people were a little noisier, perhaps fuelled by the sugar rush from eating all that bibingka and puto bumbong and drinking salabat or hot chocolate. Sometimes they would be singing Christmas carols or a current hit song. All Saints’ and All Souls’ in November was also a community affair, with the roads leading to the cemetery (Did I mention we also lived near one?) closed off to traffic and people making their way to their dearly departed’s grave on foot. The path, of course, would be occupied by street vendors selling all sorts of things like food, drinks, toys, fans, and more. The last time I was there, some were even selling small USB-powered fans that you could stick to your power bank. The one holiday that did not entail anything commercial was
Holy Week, which was taken quite seriously in our neighbourhood. The whole season of Lent was generally uneventful, but come Palm Sunday, after the mass that featured everyone waving their palm fronds (called palaspas in Tagalog), everyone would be set in a sombre mood as the last days of Jesus on earth would be remembered. Since Holy Week always fell on school vacation, there would be literally nothing for us kids to do starting Monday. Our elders forbade us from playing outside, or even inside, and generally told us not to enjoy ourselves too much. I would busy myself reading because I couldn’t go out on my bicycle for fear that, as the older people warned, any wound I get that week would never heal. And then came Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, two days we looked forward to in a macabre sort of way. On these two days, some local men would walk around the streets in a procession, shirtless and with black hoods over their heads. In their hands they held a rope on which was tied wooden sticks that they would hit their backs with. The result was a bloody mess as the sticks caused small wounds on their skin. Penitensiya,
it was called, or penitence, but I suspect they actually meant penance. (Penitence is “the action of feeling or showing sorrow and regret for having done wrong,” while penance is “voluntary selfpunishment inflicted as outward expression of repentance for having done wrong.”) The men would walk slowly as neighbours line up to watch, and I remember being mesmerized by the sheer surreality of it all. We were told the men would later jump into a river where their wounds would instantly heal because it was, after all, Holy Week, and it was only later that I realized there were no rivers anywhere near our neighbourhood. Years later I would read that the Catholic Church discouraged the practice of self-flagellation, and I don’t know if it continues to this day since it is not done here in Davao City where I have lived for the past 29 years. Another practice I haven’t encountered here in Davao is the Pabasa, the ritual non-stop chanting of the life, suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus contained in a 16th-century epic poem called the Pasyon. Our next-door neighbours in Malabon seemed to have committed themselves to hosting this yearly, so we would be hearing the entire Pasyon for a few days. At first it
was unamplified, but later on the neighbours brought in a public address system so that the entire street could hear it. As far as I could remember there were only two tunes the chanters would use, but at one point the neighbours decided to stir things up by tapping some young people to do the pabasa. True enough the teens used newer tunes based on songs that were popular at the time, and we quite enjoyed the change from the monotony. But I think it didn’t sit well with the conservative side of the community because the next year it was back to the old tunes. I don’t encounter these rituals in Davao City and in kind of miss them. It’s not that Davaoeños are less religious; I think it’s because the city has such a mix of religions and cultures that practices like these never really took root. But during this time of year I find myself remembering the faith that our neighbourhood exhibited and wishing I could return to those simpler times. Make time for your marriage Hello Ate Anna; Our family has grown fast! My wife and I have three kids, ages three to eight. We love having a large family but my wife and I are so busy it feels we never get to talk to each other. What can we do? A Reader Dear Reader: Kids bring a lot of joy but also a lot of challenges to families. It is always a struggle to balance parenting, jobs, personal time, the larger family and our marital relationship. Many families with children struggle with this. Families are complex, especially large ones. It is important to recognize there are a number of different relationships within families, each of which need care and attention. Parentchild relationships are very important to develop – children’s relationships with their siblings are, as well. Parent relationships are just as essential to develop, unfortunately this relationship is often given less priority, as children’s needs often feel more urgent. I encourage you to put as much time and energy into developing your marital relationship as you do into parenting. This is not easy, but it is essential. The stronger the marital relationship is, the stronger the family will be. Your children will see how important it is to prioritize all the family relationships. And, perhaps more important, adults have needs also. The family will be stronger if marital partners feel supported and connected to each other.
Try to schedule adult-only time with you and your partner. Your kids are young so this can be a struggle, but there are things you can do. If you have access to someone who is available to babysit, use that resource while you and your wife leave the house together, doing things you both enjoy. Take time to communicate about each of your feelings and personal lives, and not about the family or family problems. If a babysitter is not available, or will not work for your family, try to schedule time together in the house while the children are sleeping. Early bedtimes can be healthy for your children’s sleep schedule, as well as for your marital relationship. After bedtime can be a good opportunity for you and your wife to connect with each other and talk. Physical intimacy can also be an important part of a relationship. Intimacy can be expressed in ways like massages or cuddling, and
touch like this can be very helpful to connecting with your partner. Kissing and other types of touch often bring couples together in meaningful ways. Birth control supplies are available if you want to avoid pregnancy. You can find more information on this on our website at www.serc.mb.ca http:// www.serc.mb.ca. I wish much happiness for your family. Ate Anna Ate Anna welcomes your questions and comments. Canada is the preferred destination for skilled applicants First world countries, such as Canada and United States, are competitors in the international search for skilled foreign workers and immigrant applicants to provide them with the manpower needed to expand business at home and enhance their global competitiveness. Canada competes with the United States, the European Union, Australia, and others for the supply of the brightest and the best foreign skilled workers. If our chief competitors take action to make immigration to the US less attractive, Canada stands to benefit. This is the basic law of supply and demand in the market place. If the demand for the United States goes down, relative to Canada, we stand to benefit. A recent article in CIC News, “H-1 B frustrations bring renewed U.S. media interest in Canada’s immigration options,” examines a number of relevant economic indicators. Numerous American media outlets are reporting an increased interest among highly skilled foreign workers living in the United States to move north
to Canada, as well as the numbers seeking Canadian work permits. The Business Insider reports about one candidate who is impressed with the Canadian immigration system and attitudes, which differ widely from his experiences in the US. “It seems like it would be really favourable for someone like me. It seems like the way their system’s designed has common sense,” he said. “Common sense” is something that appears to be lacking at the upper reaches of Trump’s America. The president’s angry tweets about closing the Mexican border, Muslim bans, vilifying family unification as “chain migration,” and threatening to deport Daca kids and stop birth-rate citizenship, all add to the bad impression of the United States. Trump’s America has become less welcoming to immigrants. The American H-1B visa program, which was intended to bring highly skilled immigrants to the United States, is an area in which the US is falling behind
Canada. The H-1B program provides a pathway to permanent residence for much sought-after immigrants, but the number of applicants has diminished since Donald Trump called for increased scrutiny of the program, which he accused of displacing American workers and undermining wages. The approval rate for H-1B applications has declined more than 10 per cent between 2015 and 2018. Canada offers a sharp contrast as a country highly supportive of immigration and respectful of cultural and religious diversity. Canada remains competitive because of its international reputation for fairness and respect for others, while the United States, not so much any longer. The Canadian immigration system has expanded the Express Entry system as the way to attract highly skilled applicants and the numbers selected are considerable and growing. A candidate’s success is based on a Comparative Rating System (CRS) and not a confirmed job offer. At this time the United
States ranks third in terms of invitations issued through the Express Entry and only 2 per cent of this group are actually American citizens. The obvious conclusion to be drawn is that foreign workers inside the United States are making a conscious decision to move north of the border. Canada is more than a welcoming country, which prides itself on being multicultural and open to immigration from all over the world. It has immigration programs at both the federal and provincial levels to facilitate this immigration, such as the provincial nominee programs or PNPs across the country. Prospective applicants are invited to search out the requirements from the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) and other provincial based programs. There is also the option of coming to Canada under temporary resident immigration on a study permit or work permit. H-1B holders in the US are prized assets, especially those specializing in IT or STEM-related occupations. It
does not make economic sense to push H-1B holders north, but this is something Trump can answer for. The current situation may change in the future, but for the present, Canada stands to benefit. The situation may change when common sense prevails south of the border. We need to understand that it is important for Canada to remain a preferred destination for immigrants. We stand to gain far more by avoiding any temptation to follow Donald Trump’s path on immigration. In terms of attracting the brightest and best, “America First” has actually raised Canada’s profile as a better immigration destination than the US. I got a tax refund, Yay! by Tim St Vincent So you got a tax refund – Yay, Congratulations! Great news! Or is it? Do you realize that getting a tax refund means that you have been overpaying your taxes? That the government has had your money all this time? No, they won’t be paying you interest for letting them use your money for the time that they have had it. Don’t expect a “thank you,” either. Ask yourself what could you have done with that money if it had been in your hands instead of being with the Canada Revenue Agency and the Minister of Finance? You know those months when you were just a few dollars short? Where you couldn’t quite make ends meet and you skipped a payment or two because of it, or maybe you borrowed some money just to tide you over. Well maybe
that wouldn’t have happened if you had had your money in your hands instead of it being in the government’s bank account. If you find yourself in the situation where, year after year, you are getting a tax return, that may not be such a good thing. It may be better if you received almost nothing back! That would effectively mean that you would have control and access to all of your funds and the government would not have access to anything more than what you are supposed to pay. How can you do this? How can you keep as much money in your hands for as long as possible? Fairly easily, simply go to your HR or payroll department and ask them to decrease the amount of money they are sending to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) by reducing your deductions at source. To accomplish this you will
have to fill out CRA form T1213 and have CRA approve it then submit the approval to your HR/ Payroll department for processing. This is generally fairly easy to do if you contribute to an RRSP and/ or have a history of tax refunds, or can show a reasonable expectation of a tax refund in a given year. The forms and some structure around the request can be found here: h t t p s : / / w w w. c a n a d a . c a / e n / revenue-agency/services/formspublications/forms/t1213.html Now don’t go crazy! Prepaying your taxes is a good thing – overpaying your taxes isn’t. Before undergoing any changes, check with your financial planner, or if you don’t have one, then check with your bank representative for some guidance. This all relates to things in the past; nothing you can do now to impact the taxes already paid, owed or refunded in the 2018 tax year. Act now though, and you may be able to improve your situation in 2019 so that you have more money available to pay your bills. But you must have selfcontrol and a budget, otherwise
you will likely spend the money from your improved cash flow on impulse purchases and then you are no further ahead. Plan now to improve the remainder of your 2019 and to improve your situation when you file your 2019 return in 2020. Okay, so all this is great, but what should you do now with the tax refund you are about to get? That’s easy; jump into your time machine! “Huh?” you think, “I don’t have a time machine, what is this guy on about?” Yes, you do have a time machine; you just never realized it before. Money is your time machine. You can travel into the future by putting money into savings – because money in savings is money that we are going to spend in the future! You can take your time machine and travel in the past too! You do this by taking your money and paying down debt. Remember, debt is nothing more than money we have spent in the past but that we haven’t caught up to just yet! We suggest that when you run into a little extra money (such as from a tax refund, bonus,
inheritance etc.) that you spend 40 per cent in the future (put it into savings), 40 per cent in the past (paying down debt) and 20 per cent in the present by doing some carefree spending. Have a party and enjoy that money in the here and now! You should always be able to enjoy your money and one of the easiest ways to do that is to ensure you can access it. Sometimes that means making sure that CRA doesn’t get it any sooner than they need to and sometimes that can help give you the ability to pay your bills on time. Real food for every mood at Max’s Restaurant WINNIPEG – The house that fried chicken built is now officially open in Winnipeg. After their successful soft opening back on January 10 this year, Max’s Restaurant held its grand opening in the city on Friday, April 5. Led by the Alibin Group, Inc, and officials from Max’s Group, Inc., the happy occasion was attended by friends, families, community and business leaders, politicians and members of the media, including Pilipino Express news magazine. After the ribbon cutting outside, a “chicken cutting” ceremony was held inside the restaurant, as it is the tradition with every Max’s Restaurant opening. Bringing the beloved Filipino restaurant brand to Winnipeg was many years in the making. “It’s a culmination of many years. And we are happy to bring the very first Max’s Restaurant to Manitoba, which is the 16th store in North America,” said Hipolito Alibin, Jr. of the Alibin Group. “Also, I have the go-signal to share today that this look of Max’s Winnipeg will be the future look of Max’s stores globally. Most of the design flowed from Max’s but there are different touches as well, made by our brother John, an architect.” Alibin is one of five siblings who worked together with other investors to bring a Max’s franchise to the city. And with brothers Frank, Arnel, John, and sister Sheila and their families, each have their respective roles to play in the business. “We’re all hands-on,” said General Manager, Arnel Alibin. “We’re not afraid to get our hands dirty. And with the grand opening, we will be bringing out the full
menu, where we will be adding nine items.” With their current slogan: “Real food for every mood,” the new 4,500-square-foot restaurant at 1255 St. James St. features traditional Philippine cuisine such as the famed fried chicken, pancit, pork adobo, kare-kare, lechon kawali, sinigang, chopsuey, lumpiang shanghai and many others. Max’s Winnipeg also contributes to the local economy as they employ 60 staff. With the official opening, Max’s Winnipeg now accepts reservations and bookings for parties. Delivery and catering are also in the works. Besides bringing a delicious taste of the Philippines to kababayans in Winnipeg, other communities have started to get a liking for Filipino food as well. “I was told that even other communities like the Hutterites come in groups to enjoy the food at Max’s. For me, this is a great way to see how [Max’s] is growing,” said Bill Rodgers, Executive Director for International Operations of Max’s Restaurants, and grandson of founder Maximo Gimenez. At last count, Max’s Restaurant currently has over 127 branches in the Philippines. The chain also has branches in the U.S. states of California, Hawaii, New Jersey and Nevada. It also has locations in Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary in Canada. Hemorrhoids, digestive upset, stomach ailments? – Check your feng shui One of the most wildly popular feng shui books is Karen Kingston’s Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui. And one of the topics she covers in the book – that few others have dared to touch – is the subject of the elimination system and its tie to your personal feng shui. While it’s not a pretty subject to talk about, Karen deftly connects clutter in the house with the symbol of our internal clutter we all deal with daily: our colon. She writes that your home is connected to every part of your body, and your colon is too. The idea is that by looking at both your home’s clutter and removal of what’s unnecessary, used up and needing to be purged, as well as the health of your colon, you’ll create greater health and well being in all parts of your life. What’s interesting is that she contends by clearing up your colon, you can help rid yourself of emotional issues that may have been buried for years. Heal Your Body health guru, Louise Hay, says that stomach problems are based on dread and fear of new situations and circumstances.
Even bad breath can be a symptom of stomach issues, and one that Hay says is a fixation on thoughts of revenge or personal experiences backing up. Either way, both are about the past. And that’s true of clutter. It’s about holding on to what’s no longer useful. I’ve seen clients finally be able to move past emotional blockages in their lives, marriages and careers after a thorough decluttering and cleaning. I’ve also seen resistant clients who love their thrift store and eBay buys and who can never seem to move forward in their lives, staying forever stuck in problems from their past as they live through other people’s castoffs. If you’ve had stomach or elimination system complaints, take a look at these feng shui tips for helping you clear clutter – both at home and in your colon – and see if your life and elimination system improve. Heel hemorrhoids – The Chinese believe that energy lines run from your feet to every part of your body, so your feet can actually symbolize what’s happening in other areas of your
body and to your health. Cracked heels on your feet are often a sign of hemorrhoids and fissures, and problems with elimination. Back door constipation – In the house, hemorrhoids and fissures can often show up as clutter and mess at the back door. Yes, the backdoor of your home symbolizes your body’s “back door” too! Clear out clutter and mess by the door, keep it swept and clear to help if you’ve got hemorrhoid problems. The Chinese believe that energy lines run from your feet to every part of your body, so your feet can actually symbolize what’s happening in other areas of your body and to your health. Cracked heels on your feet are often a sign of hemorrhoids and fissures, and problems with elimination. Get a pedicure and keep your feet in good condition for better overall health. Constipation equals clutter, clutter equals constipation – Whether it’s inside you or surrounding you, clutter and excess represent matter (or matters?) that haven’t been gotten rid of or handled. Work on clearing out excess clutter,
particularly at the back of the house (the less public side) and the back door. Work on emotional matters too. Lay problems to rest – or handle them once and for all. Many stomach complaints can be symbols of denial and refusal to address matters and problems and resolve them. Hidden clutter symbolizes stomach issues – Because constipation represents what’s hidden, look for hidden clutter such as the kind found in drawers (like those infamous junk drawers), desks and closets as a source of constipation. Streamline drawers and add organizers to make these areas more orderly. What’s another common indicator of constipation? A messy desk! Little sticky notes, random papers and ancient or non-working pens and pencils are a good sign that there’s a stoppage in your colon or stomach problems. Emotions in the stomach – When there are difficulties with the stomach, there are often problems with the area representing the abdominal area in our home, the southwest. When the stomach is out of balance, so are the emotions because this is where we process many of our negative emotions (spleen, pancreas, liver, colon, kidney, stomach – fear, anger, worry, depression). Stomach problems can range from stomach rumbling, gas, diarrhea or constipation. When emotions are out of balance, we often feel it “in our gut.” Work on the southwest corner of your home, living room, the bedroom, your home office, the kitchen and the dining room. Keeping these corners clear and clean will help your stomach and your emotional health, and help relieve you of negative emotions. Kick digestive problems – Foot problems give lots of clues about problems in the body. Problems with the big toes, such as callouses and toenail issues can point to problems with the neck. Soreness on the inside ankles or arches can indicate kidney or bladder issues. And the heel? It shows problems too. When the heels are cracked
it can indicate anal fissures or hemorrhoids. Get regular pedicures to keep feet and stomach health in good condition – If you have severe foot problems such as fungus, be sure to see a podiatrist or your physician as severe foot problems can create a myriad of digestive and bodily complaints. Regular reflexology treatments are also a good idea for keeping the whole body in tiptop shape. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My father is older and not well. He lives with me. His bedroom has several old clocks and most of them don’t work but he is very sentimental about them. Is that bad feng shui? Answer: You sound like a very loving and special daughter. Here’s the thing – at some point, feng shui is irrelevant. If he’s open to removing the clocks, then do so. Clocks that don’t work symbolize an end… that time has run out. But my feeling is that if I’m 90 years old and want to eat a slice of pecan pie, I am just going to do it because I don’t care how I look in a bathing suit. With your father’s advanced age, I would be reluctant to do anything that upsets him or makes him unhappy because that’s not good feng shui. If those clocks make him happy, then, he should have them. I don’t believe in forcing feng shui on anyone, especially someone older who is convalescing. He should have his room exactly the way he wants it. That’s good feng shui, and having a daughter like you is great feng shui. If those clocks make your father happy, who cares about those silly clocks? Unplug: 12 tips to manage kid’s screen time Concerned about how much time your child spends on the computer, watching TV or playing video games? Try these suggestions. Although watching TV or playing computer games can be educational, it’s easy to overdo it. The American Academy of Pediatrics discourages media use by children younger than age two and recommends limiting older children’s screen time to no more than one or two hours a day. Need convincing? Too much screen time has been linked to obesity, irregular sleep, behavioural problems, impaired academic performance, and violence and less time for active play. How to limit screen time Your children may be racking up more screen time than you realize. Start monitoring it, and talk to them about the importance of sitting less and moving more. Also, explain screen-time rules — and the consequences of breaking them. In the meantime, take simple steps to reduce screen time. For example: • Eliminate background TV. If the TV is turned on — even if it’s just in the background — it’s likely to draw your children’s attention. If you’re not actively watching a show, turn off the TV. • Keep TVs and computers
out of the bedrooms. Children who have TVs in their bedrooms watch more TV than children who don’t have TVs in their bedrooms. Monitor your kids’ screen time and the websites they are visiting by keeping TVs and computers in a common area of your home. • Don’t eat in front of the TV. Allowing your children to eat or snack in front of the TV increases the time they are passively sitting rather than moving. The habit also encourages mindless munching, which can lead to weight gain. • Set school-day rules. Most children have limited free time during the school week. Don’t let your kids spend all of it in front of a screen. Also, avoid using screen time as a reward or punishment. This can make television shows or computer games seem even more important to your children. • Talk to your children’s caregivers. Encourage other adults in your kids’ lives to also limit screen time for them. • Suggest other activities. Rather than relying on screen time for entertainment, help your children find other things to do, such as reading, playing a sport, helping with cooking or trying a board game. • Set a good example. Be a good role model by limiting the time you spend “plugged in.”
• Unplug it. If this issue is becoming a source of tension in your family, unplug the TV, turn off the computer or put away the smartphones or video games for a while. You might designate one day a week or month as a screenfree day for the whole family. To prevent unauthorized TV viewing, put a lock on your TV’s electrical plug. Become an active participant Make screen time as engaging as possible: • Plan what your kids view. Instead of flipping through channels, seek quality videos or programming. Consider using parental-control settings on your TV and computers. Preview video games and smartphone applications before allowing your children to play with them. • Watch with your children. Whenever possible, watch programs together — and talk about what you see, such as family values, violence or drug abuse. If you see a junk-food ad, explain that just because it’s on TV doesn’t mean it’s good for you. • Record programs and watch them later. This will allow you to fast-forward through commercials selling toys, junk food and other products. When watching live programs, use the
mute button during commercials. • Encourage active screen time. Have your kids stretch or do yoga while watching a show. Challenge your family to see who can do the most jumping jacks during a commercial break. Choose video games that encourage physical activity. It can be difficult to start
limiting the time your children spend in front of a screen, but it’s worth the effort. By creating new household rules and steadily making small changes in your kids’ routines, you can curb screen time and its unhealthy effects. By Mayo Clinic Staff – Courtesy Mayo Clinic News Network

FOSSILS... From page 1 child. It was the variety of ancient and more advanced features in the bones that led Mijares and fellow researchers to determine that they had discovered a previously unknown species of human. The breakthrough discovery makes Homo luzonensis the second new human species to be identified in Southeast Asia in recent years. In 2004, Homo floresiensis, also known as the “Hobbit,” was discovered on the Indonesian island of Flores. While the hobbit would have stood just over a metre in
PILIPINO EXPRESS height, Mijares and study author Florent Détroit are cautious about estimating the height of H. luzonensis, due to the limited number of remains. However, given its small teeth, and the foot bone, Détroit thinks that its body size was possibly within the range of the small Homo sapiens, known as Aetas or Negritos, living in the Philippines today. Men from these groups have an average height of around 151 centimetres and the women about 142 centimetres. Although separated by millions of years of evolution, some of the bones of Homo luzonensis strongly resemble
those of the famous “Lucy” fossil of Africa, Australopithecus afarensis, which lived between 2.9 million and 3.9 million years ago. The finger bone resembles that of Lucy, and other early Homo species. The finger and toe bones are curved, suggesting that climbing was important to their lifestyle and survival. The researchers hope to study the biomechanical aspects of the fossils and how they may have moved. More excavations of the Callao Cave and identifying other potential sites are also planned. The Addams Family
The all-dentist musical comedy This coming spring, the fabulous and talented Manitoba dentists will be performing the hit musical comedy, The Addams Family from May 1 to 5 at Théâtre Cercle Molière. On the tails of its recent theatrical successes of Lucky Stiff, Young Frankenstein, Guys and Dolls and Little Shop of Horrors, this hilarious musical is sure to be another all-dentist musical smash hit! The Addams Family is a musical comedy with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and the book by Marshal Brickman and Rick Elice. The Addams Family features an original story, and it is every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. As if that weren’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he has never even dreamed of doing before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents. The musical is the first stage show based on the characters created by Charles Addams. Proceeds from this production will be donated to two very worthwhile causes. Half the proceeds will go to Rainbow Stage Education and Outreach development programs, while the other half will go to support the initiatives of The Manitoba Dental Foundation.

The search is on for the next Galaxy Canada queens by Lucille Nolasco Miss World. Miss Universe. Miss International. Miss Earth. These beauty pageants are considered to be the Big Four when it comes to major international beauty pageants for women. But did you know there’s also the Canada Galaxy Pageants? This competition is open to all girls and women aged nine and above and it consists of six divisions: Miss Pre-teen Galaxy Canada – 9 to 11 years Junior Miss Galaxy Canada – 12 to 14 years Miss Teen Galaxy Canada – 15 to 18 years Miss Galaxy Canada – 19 to 27 years Ms Galaxy Canada – 28 + and unmarried Mrs Galaxy Canada – 19 + and married Filipino-Canadian Katrina Czarina Salazar will be representing Winnipeg in the Junior Miss Galaxy Canada Division. The charming 12 yearold is the youngest child of Sally and Kenneth Salazar from Laguna, Philippines. KC also has an older brother, AJ. Sally remembers that, at a young age, KC liked to pose in front of the mirror and would use household items like a blanket to wrap around herself and an empty bucket of ice cream as her crown. “I believe it’s in our blood,” KC said. “My mom used to model back in the Philippines. And my uncle Eric Feliciano is into fashion
design and training local beauty queens.” The Salazar family immigrated to Canada in 2015. Since that time, KC’s interest and passion in modeling and joining beauty contests never wavered. She joined and won second place in the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival Bulilit Queen in 2016. In 2017, KC was awarded Best In Talent during the Manitoba Kids Talent/Fashion Show organized by Shining Star Productions Manitoba. She was also a finalist in the first-ever Winnipeg Kid Mayor 2018. According to her profile on the official Galaxy Canada website, KC is an active child, loves to volunteer and has received various awards in academics and afterschool programs. Currently a Grade 7 student at Hugh John Macdonald school, KC also loves to sing, dance and act on stage. Meanwhile, another Winnipegger, 16 year-old Ariele Lopuck will be representing Winnipeg in the Miss Teen Galaxy Canada Division. Canada Galaxy Pageants is a two-day competition to be held in Toronto from April 26 to 28th. Winners will receive the 2019 Canada Galaxy Prize Package, which includes a crown, sash, paid entry fee to the Galaxy Pageant International in Orlando, Florida in August, and airfare and accommodations to the Internationals. CRISTY... A baby is always a blessing.
SHOWBIZ SHOWBUZZ PILIPINO EXPRESS
kaniyang alaga. Maganda. Matapang. Buungbuo ang loob. Mabuting anak at asawa.
See CRISTY p18

Calia and the other gold medal winners will form Team Manitoba to compete against their peers at the 25th Skills Canada National Competition to be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia from May 27 to 30. CRISTY... From page 17 Wala ring anak sa labas.
“We’re talking about Kris.

See CRISTY p19

M a b u t i n g magpatingin ka agad sa doctor. Mabuting maagapan, bago lumala iyan.
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. Dami mong iniisip!
Libra (Sept. Don’t worry.
Bakit kaya?

Ang madalas niyang puntahan See CRISTY p21

Gayunman, sinabi ni Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman na “early provincial election call would be a disservice to voters.”
*** See CRISTY p22

“American time daw kasi dapat on the dot. – CSF
