Ottawa announced the opening of a program that will provide a way for caregivers a chance to become permanent residents in Canada along with their family members. “Caregivers came to Canada to provide care to families that need it, and it’s time for Canada to care for them in return. To demonstrate our commitment, we are finally providing them and their family members the opportunity to apply to become permanent residents,” said Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) in a press release on March 15. Caregivers who have been working in Canada temporarily but who have not qualified for any other current caregiver program can now apply to the Interim Pathway for Caregivers (IPC). They are encouraged to apply See NEW PATH p18

Decriminalize libel And so it has happened. Last week two persons were sentenced to four to eight years imprisonment and fined P2.5 million each for libellous comments they had posted on Facebook against North Cotabato Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza. The decision, penned on March 22 by Judge Jose Tabosares of Regional Trial Court Branch 23 in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato, was apparently the first such conviction under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, which covers such acts as cybersquatting, cybersex, child pornography, identity theft, illegal access to data, and, yes, libel. Many of the provisions of the law are actually welcome and were in fact the original intent of the law, but somewhere along its crafting, libel was thrown in, which many people suspected was an attempt to curtail freedom of expression. Because of this, the cybercrime law was met with opposition when it was being deliberated and when it was finally signed into law.

The bone of contention against the law was that it was apparently a violation of Article III, Section 4 of the Constitution: “No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances.” Social media was only a half decade old at the time but Filipinos, social creatures as we are, took to it like fish to water and became one of the biggest users of platforms like Facebook. “Fake news” was not a big problem yet back then; what was disconcerting for politicians was that for the first time, the people could get bigger audiences for their comments and opinions. So as more and more people were using the Internet and social media, the fear was that the cybercrime law would be used to suppress the freedom of the people in a medium that had given them unprecedented access both to information and to the expression of their long-kept

opinions. Prior to the Internet, the communication went decidedly one way, with the mainstream media mainly reporting on the newsmakers without the benefit of the public making their sentiments and reactions known. With social media, it was suddenly not just two-way, but a multiplicity of it. It made for a lively marketplace of ideas, but it was exactly the situation that the powers-that-be did not want to have. Many were disappointed when then-President Benigno Aquino signed the cybercrime prevention bill into law since we had presumed he would side with the people and not the politicians on this one. Of course, the law has many good provisions, but it is the inclusion of libel that had many rising up in protest. It had a “chilling effect” on freedom of online expression, and many were afraid it could penalize people for even just “liking” a Facebook post. But with the Supreme Court backing the law, and now with two convictions paving the way for more, it is time to open

the national conversation on decriminalizing libel in the country. The Philippines is one of the few nations in the world where libel is a criminal offense; in the rest of the world, it is a civil case and those who are found guilty suffer only the payment of fines – not imprisonment, as is the case in the Philippines. It is a weapon of choice wielded by the rich and powerful against the people – no longer just the media, but now literally every single person in the country – to sow fear in the hearts of those who would criticize them. It is a sword of Damocles hanging over the heads of the people, one that forces us to think twice about expressing something even if we feel strongly about it, or exposing something even if it is true. The views and opinions expressed in this column are those of the original author, and do not necessarily represent those of the Pilipino Express publishers. The freedom that forgiveness brings The seasonal change from winter to spring brings with it a renewed sense of beginning. It is no coincidence that at the same time that nature starts a new cycle of growth, people start to clean out their homes and yards, and start spending more time outside. Some organizations start a new fiscal year and even the end of tax season seems to signal the sign of new beginnings. People who are affected by minimal sunlight in the winter report that they feel a significant improvement in mood. This sign of rejuvenation can lead to an internal “reset” and want for interpersonal growth. One way to improve emotional, spiritual and social growth is to consider the mental burdens that we carry with us. What past events do we keep replaying over and over in our minds that continue to weigh us down? Often, we can dwell on past hurts that result in feeling ongoing resentment, anger and even hatred. But we often don’t consider the personal cost and stress of hanging on to grudges. A well-known Buddhist quote captures this idea: “Holding a grudge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.” It can be so easy to think about the times and ways that we have been hurt or disrespected. It doesn’t take much time to list the

faults of others. We often think, “What is wrong with them?” “He must be crazy” or “She never appreciates all that I have done for her.” Some situations can be especially difficult to go through, and sometimes we can take a long time to heal. Examples of such circumstances are when: • a close friend becomes distant • a co-worker takes credit for our work • a child says hurtful things to us • a spouse or partner has an affair • someone hurts one of our children • a parent fails to be on our side • a confidante tells one of our secrets • a loved one does not apologize when he or she should • someone steals from us • we fall victim to physical, mental, emotional, or other kind of abuse When another person hurts us, we can feel extreme sadness, shock, disappointment, and anger. When we feel betrayed, it can affect us not only emotionally, but also physically and spiritually. To illustrate, psychologist Elisha Goldstein (2010) asks us to try this experiment: “Think of someone in your

life right now who you are absolutely holding a grudge against right now. There is no way you are willing to forgive this person right now for their actions. Picture that person, and hold onto that unwillingness to forgive. Now, just observe what emotions are there. Anger, resentment, sadness? Also notice how you are holding your body right now, is it tense anywhere or feeling heavy? Now bring awareness to your thoughts; are they hateful and spiteful thoughts?” Experience how it feels to hold onto this grudge so tightly. Is there an effect on your body; for instance, heaviness in your chest or head? Do you avoid certain places or situations because the person might be there? Do you look for reasons to tell yourself that you are better than that person? Even worse, do you constantly ruminate about how you can get revenge? Think about the physical and mental effort that you are investing and ask yourself: “Who is really suffering here?” Can you imagine the effect this will have if you carry it over weeks, months, even years? This mental stress could be related to future physical illness. It’s hard to know where to start the road to forgiveness, but it can help to: Put yourself in the other’s shoes Think about all the issues that the other has to deal with. Are they stressed at work? Do they have health issues? Also, do you

really believe that the person had bad intentions? Perhaps, they were forgetful or simply just displayed bad judgment, but did not mean to be hurtful. When appropriate, tell the other person about your feelings. If not in person, then try it in written form. Sometimes, writing a letter can give us time to sort out our thoughts. If they read it without you present first, it can give them time to think about their response. Set boundaries Tell the other person what is acceptable to you, and what is not. For example, if your mother is interfering with how you discipline your children, let her know rather than holding your feelings inside. You may be worried about hurting her, but if said in a kind but firm manner, she may help her to get over any hurt feelings. For example, try saying, “I really respect your opinion because you are a great mother, but I’ve got to parent my kids in a way that feels right to me.” Get support Confide in one or two people who you trust will not talk about this elsewhere. If you tell multiple people, you may be crossing the line into gossip, which is not far from the act of getting revenge. More often than not, being a gossip will make you look bad also. Find someone who is not judgmental, who may have been through a similar situation. Talk See CHERYL p7

Work for passion or money? Spring is in full swing and for some it may be the right time to spring into a new job or career. After all, spring is a time for rebirth and new beginnings. Two things often considered are, either to work for money or to choose something that we love. Well, if you can have both, that would be the ideal career. For most people, this is not the case and that is why it is important to learn what we do best and perhaps from there, we can uncover what fits and which skills can be transferred into a long-term career. Discover your strengths Early this week, one of our administrative assistants approached me about her recent job interview for a human resources position. She said she felt like she did not meet the expectations of the hiring manager. There was one question where she was asked regarding a particular ability and she indicated to the hiring manager that she did not have any experience in that regard. However, she did state that she does possess transferrable skills that she can apply.

To give you some background, this employee has a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) Degree and has been in a clerical role for about a year. For someone with long-term career aspirations, it is quite normal to seek out new opportunities and new experience. It is not always easy to find the right job or career, but a job change or career change requires hard work and patience; and above all, it requires taking charge. The key to establishing a successful career is discovering who you are and what you want in life. It’s really important to know yourself when it comes to choosing the right career. Some people may change careers several times before finding the right one, but always remember, it is not always about what the job brings to you, but what you bring to the job. It is not always about the salary, but about being happy and loving what you do five days a week every single day of your career. “It’s whom you know, not what you know” We’ve heard this phrase many

times before. In today’s world, it is becoming more obvious that it’s not only whom you know but also who knows you and your work. One of the things the administrative assistant and I chatted about were some of the things that she could do in case she is not successful in her job interview. Considering she is a new university graduate and she is keen on building her experience, we talked about job shadowing one of the human resources folks and building her network from there. This is one way to get other colleagues familiar with her skills and talents. The key is to “know” and “be known.” Stay connected and keep your network active. Take action! Opportunities will not magically appear on your desk. If you want career change, it is up to you to make it happen. If you know the career path that you want, actively seek it out. Your career is in your hands, so owning your career is the way to go, as nobody else will help you except yourself. Don’t be too complacent Envision yourself three years from now and ask yourself, “What

kind of job you will I be doing by then? Can I see myself doing the same job for more than three years?” If the answer is no, think of ways to work on developing yourself to get to where you want to be three years from now. It may mean taking up some courses to upgrade credentials. In order to move forward, it is important to think forward. The reality is we cannot always have both money and a job that we enjoy. Sometimes we do things that we do not necessarily want to do and other times, we may be lucky enough to land something that we actually like to do and make good money out of it. It does not really matter whether we like our job or not, the reality is we have to work as hard as we can regardless of the job that we have. Good or bad income, we still have to work hard. The important thing

is that our job meets our needs and maintains a good balance between work and family. This article is intended for information purposes only and not to be considered as professional advice. Face-to-face interview Immigration Minister On March 15, the office of local MP Robert-Falcon Ouellette invited the Pilipino Express to interview Ahmed Hussen, the federal Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. He is strongly supportive of increased immigration, especially the reunification of families in Canada. Federal caregiver pilots Minister Hussen reported that his department has reduced the backlog left in the old Caregiver Program to 495 and can complete the processing with the, now enforced, Interim Pathway for Caregivers. He also spoke at length about the proposed Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker pilots and confirmed that the proposed changes came from consultations that he held with stakeholders, such as current and former caregivers. Hussen expressed the concerns of many about the past abuse of caregivers by employers and the enforced separation from their families. The changes in recruitment, expected in the fall of this year, will address both these issues. The new pilots are intended to have foreign screening and caregiver-specific work for qualified applicants who are intended to work as caregivers in Canada. Successful applicants will no longer require upfront, approved job offers and they will also have a chance to bring their families with them. The occupation-specific work permit holders will be required to work for two years in the caregiver field before applying for their permanent resident status. The proposed change appears to be a reworking of the former Live-in Caregiver program but with major improvements, such as having no upfront job offer nor a restriction on bringing dependent family members with them. Parent and grandparent sponsorship I asked Minister Hussen about the short opening for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents back in January. He confirmed that the Expression of Interest (EOI) for submissions closed after only 10 minutes. His department accepted 27,000 EOI’s, which he explained, would

compensate for an expected attrition rate of roughly 30 per cent, based on history data. The primary reason for withdrawing or not following through with invitations to apply is because many sponsors cannot meet the income requirements for the three previous taxation years (LICO plus 30 per cent, based on family size). Hussen conceded that the demand in Canada far exceeds the supply with the application cap. However, he correctly pointed out that the former Conservative government had a relatively low cap of only 5,000 applications per year compared with the Liberal government who first raised the cap to 10,000 per annum and 20,000 for 2019. The difference is a staggering 400 per cent and goes a long way to demonstrating a real commitment to the reunification of families in Canada. Promises made and promises kept. Excluded relationships A topic of interest to the Filipino community is undeclared family members – how many permanent residents and Canadian citizens are separated from their loved ones because they did not honestly disclose all family members on their application for permanent residence? IRCC is certainly aware of secret marriages etc. and require a Certificate of No Marriage Record from single applicants and an Advisory Of Marriages certificate for married applicants. This additional requirement is unique to Philippines nationals. The consequence of their omission is serious and often heart breaking. The status of these potential sponsors is in doubt and the sponsorship of the excluded family members is challenging. There is a chance that sponsors may be challenged on grounds of inadmissibility for permanent residents, or revocation of citizenships for citizens and applicants refused. The Minister did acknowledge that Canada has a long tradition of fairness and an Act that provides some relief for sponsors who failed to disclose family members. They can still take a risk and sponsor family members, with a request for special humanitarian and compassionate exemption, especially for “the best interests

Michael Scott with Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of the child.” The Act and Regulations offers relief but places too much arbitrary power in the hands of visa officials and limits appeal options for failed sponsorships. The visa officer decides whether or not to accept the request for humanitarian and compassionate relief but the failed sponsor is limited in their appeal options. They cannot argue the essential humanitarian and compassionate grounds but are limited to an error in fact or law or a denial of natural justice. If the humanitarian and compassionate grounds are not admitted at appeal, they will not be heard and the appeal offer appears to be a hollow offering. You either win at the first adjudication or face almost certain refusal at appeal. Minister Hussen, to his credit, admitted that he was not familiar with this issue but invited me to submit the request for change in writing. I admire both his honest response and invitation to follow up. This is a matter that should be championed by the Filipino expatriate community because of the magnitude of the issue. It touches so many families and individuals. In conclusion, we should all be aware of the sincere efforts by the current government to address the issue of family reunification. They have made significant and meaningful changes to the caregiver application process and sponsorship of parents and grandparents. Of course, things can always improve but the prospect of returning to the restrictive immigration practices of the Conservatives is not encouraging. The issue of the excluded family

L-r: Robert-Falcon Ouellette, MP for Winnipeg Centre, Michael Scott and Minister Ahmed Hussen relationship and the restrictive appeal options is something that the immigration department needs to address. There is strength in numbers. It is not enough to have some practitioners, such as myself, successfully challenging IRPR s. 117(9)(d). Yes, even with the current restrictions, there is a chance of success, but it should be because of the law and not in spite of it.

Spring thrills This past winter was interesting, to say the least. Loads of snow fell across the country and temperatures dipped very low for so long. I bet you’re pretty happy that it’s now spring – I know I am. I was visiting Winnipeg when it dipped to a -50C wind chill back in late January. Sure it was cold, but once you get past -25C, does it really make a difference? Growing up in Winnipeg, I didn’t notice the difference. Besides, it’s easy to add layers to stay warm. I was in Winnipeg meeting with other public relations folks who came from Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C. They held no punches in talking about how cold it was and questioned why people would choose to live in such a harsh climate. I quickly came to the defense of River City, as this was my home for almost 40 years. I gushed about the 100,000 lakes, affordable housing, Winnipeg Jets and, of course, the friendly people. For most of the group, it was their first time visiting Winnipeg, so I took up the role of tour guide. We went to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, The Forks, the college in St. Boniface, and a variety of other places downtown. It didn’t take them long to realize that Winnipeg has a lot to offer. I quite enjoyed my short visit and was reminded why I love this great city so much. It’s easy to write about the cold and snow now, as the worst has now passed. The -53C in

CHERYL... From page 4 to a counsellor who can help you to see things in a different light, and help you work through the anger, depression or anxiety that you may feel. Some are reluctant to forgive because they think that it means they are saying the hurtful act was acceptable. This is not necessarily so. More important, it can mean releasing feelings of anger, blame, resentment or vengeance on another person or yourself. One of the most powerful quotes that truly captures the essence of forgiveness was said by Lily Tomlin: “Forgiveness means giving up all hope for a better past.” Looking at the act of forgiveness in this manner provides us with the hope of a better present and future, and frees us from past hurts. But it is not something that is just handed to us. We must work toward forgiveness and truly desire it in our hearts. January was a bit of a shocker. February snowfall was more than three times the normal levels. Yet, this is what separates Winnipeggers from the rest of the country. Schools in the city were not closed, city services remained open and it was business as usual. Put these conditions anywhere else, and it would be total chaos and hysteria. When I flew back home to Nanaimo, I experienced a difference in temperature of over 45 degrees. Sure I was relieved to have left the cold behind, but I couldn’t help but think, what if the west coast experienced the same temps and snowfall amounts that is commonplace in the prairies. Here’s what I have observed in my four years living here. • First, there is widespread panic. When temps hit below zero (and I’m talking -1 to -5C) people start wearing Canada Goose-type coats. Sales for North Face and Sorel boots rise dramatically. People are covered head to toe. For me, this is still warm! I wear shorts to the gym in the mornings. People look at me in horror when I walk in and out of the gym. Some yell that I am not human. I don’t argue with them, I

let them think I am some sort of superhuman. Little do they know, -1 in Winnipeg is shorts weather. • At 1 to 5 cm of snowfall, people question if they should leave the house. Store shelves run out of water and basic supplies. • People install studded tires on their vehicles. Yes, the ones with metal spikes that protrude from the rubber. Some also drive with chains. Granted, it is much more hilly here than the prairies, but can you imagine someone driving with chains on their tires in Winnipeg? They would be laughed at and chased out of town. • Parents demand that schools be shut down, even if there is only a thin layer of snow on the ground. Once again, in their defence, the snow is wet and mushy, so it makes for a difficult drive especially on the very steep streets you find across the coast. When it snows, it becomes one of the most engaging times for someone in my position. Let me put it this way: in just two days of snowfall, my school district social media accounts saw over 90,000 impressions on Twitter, showed up on 80,000 Facebook feeds and a video, in which my superintendent sang that schools were closed, garnered 50,000 views. True story. Snowmageddon, as it was called, lasted only a few days.

Snow in Nanaimo, B.C., February 2019 Snow piled up, but I easily shovelled it off to the side (still wearing shorts btw). I secretly enjoyed all the snow. The only downside? My calla lilies were already in bloom (normal for February) and did not survive

the snow and frost. I know what you’re thinking: “the horror!” Enjoy the thrill of a Manitoba spring. I sure miss it. Dale manages the communications department for a school district in B.C.

Spring cleaning Clutter’s effects on your life Creating a healthy, energetic home or office relies on diligence. It’s much easier to let your home or office become cluttered and messy than it is to keep on top of papers, throw out old magazines, or otherwise dispose of the things that you no longer need, want, or use. For that reason many people don’t bother with this kind of routine maintenance. And that’s how spring-cleaning should be looked at: maintenance for your home. Now, I’m not going to tell you what to do for your personal spring-cleaning because only you know if you are harbouring clothes in your closet from 30 years ago, or if your addiction to paper has gotten out of hand. You are the expert at your own mess. Give yourself permission to clean it up and let go of it. Let’s go over some basics about dirty, cluttered homes versus clean and organized homes. What does a dirty, cluttered home do to you? It makes you feel tired – A cluttered home is a visual and psychic drain. All that stuff makes you fatigued. One of the most fatigued people I know simply cannot throw anything away. Antiques are her specialty. Everything is a “collectible.” But that does not mean she has to collect it. This client is slowly letting go of her addiction to acquiring and is finding her energy is rebounding. It makes you feel hopeless – Simply put, too much stuff is overwhelming and we can’t handle it all, so we throw our psychological hands in the air in frustration. This leads to that hopeless, it’s-all-inevitable feeling. It makes you poor – Yep, that’s right: POOR. Ever notice those homes of the megawealthy? They’re a study in restraint. You notice their homes because stuff isn’t everywhere. Time and time again, I notice the environments of people who are struggling to make ends meet, and I notice that they have an overwhelmingly HUGE baseball cap collection, some kind of

collectible that’s taken over the house, or too many pets. Get rid of all but the most meaningful things. You can do it. How does clutter hurt you? It makes you feel out of control in your life. That’s because the stuff is in control and you’re not. Put yourself in the driver’s seat of your life and take control of all that stuff by donating it, throwing it away, or organizing it — and get everyone in your home in on the act. What does a clean, organized home do for you? It gives you a sense of calm – Imagine walking in to a room where the tops are cleared off and there are no papers and mess scattered about. How does it make you feel? That’s the AAAHHHH feeling you get when you walk into a hotel room…it’s neat and you can see the room and not all the stuff. It gives you back your health – Dirty, cluttered houses can make you fatigued, constipated, have back pain, and congested. Not just because there’s stuff everywhere, but because there is dust on all that stuff — and dust is nothing but negative energy. Unclog your home and your health might be better to boot! It gives you wealth – Think about the times when you were doing well financially. As money worries piled up, did you ever make the correlation that so has all the stuff around you? Get rid of it and you will see financial flow again. It puts you in control of your life – Suddenly, order appears in the universe, you can find things, the feeling of being overwhelmed isn’t omnipresent and you look forward to things; life is sweet again. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I have a roommate with an ivy plant. The plant looks almost dead but there is a long vine that has a few leaves on it. My roommate has used tacks to wind the vine around the kitchen window. It just looks sad. Tell me this can’t be good feng shui. Answer: It’s not good feng shui. It’s sad and pitiful to see a plant like this. Besides being an indication of poor plant health, which should be lush and full of

vibrant green leaves, winding a vine that’s long and sparse and wrapping it around a window or tacking it up on a wall, actually brings down the energy of the house. Instead, this shows a plant barely clinging to life and growing sparser and sparser. This can denote a spiral down in the household, energy that’s dwindling, or lack of growth in your life. That vine can also sap money, health and relationship harmony from your house and life. Untack that poor plant and cut it back or add it to some compost and buy a new one – one that will boost and enhance your energy and growth. Question: I had heard that flowers could help with fertility. I am trying to conceive. Is there a flower that would be beneficial to display to help me become pregnant? Answer: Interestingly, the flower that is considered to be the best flower for career also is a symbol of fertility. That flower is the orchid. In addition to having many children, the flower is said to bestow familial luck. Display these beautiful flowers anywhere and they’ll bring beautiful chi to your home as they are considered one of the most auspicious flowers and symbolize men of high regard. This is definitely a multi-purpose flower! Select a real one or a silk one and display it where you see if frequently. It’s helpful to display it in the southwest corner that represents the womb and woman. I wish you luck! Question: I love bonsai plants. But I heard they aren’t good feng shui. Is that true? Answer: Bonsai plants are plants that are trained to remain small. The plants are removed from their pots and their leaves and roots trimmed so that they stay forever small, yet with an aged appearance. They are a hobby for many people and are fascinating to see. Yet, in feng shui terms they are representative of a plant that never fully reached its potential – and for that reason, they are not considered to be good feng shui. I love to look at bonsai, but robust plant growth and health brings great feng shui, and constrained growth brings constrained, weak feng shui. Amazing Gianna in Florida Gianna Eusebio, Manitoba’s 10-year-old ambassador for the Children’s Hospital was in Orlando, Florida last week for Childrens Hospitals Week. Gianna was recently named Manitoba’s Champion for 2019. (See Pilipino Express, March 16, 2019.) While in Orlando, Gianna met other Champions from across the continent and some 1500 attendees to share their stories of remarkable recovery from serious illnesses and injuries, thanks to children’s hospitals. The Children’s Miracle Network organized the event, held at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, to celebrate this inspiring group of ambassadors as well as pediatric hospitals and the vital role they play in improving the health of children across North America. “I was an amazing time!” Gianna’s mom, Tes Eusebio, told the Pilipino Express. “The events were much more than we expected. Gianna spoke in groups and shared her story to bring awareness, including a Q&A with all the sponsors. She was amazing! All the kids were!” Throughout the trip, Gianna and her family were treated as VIP’s, meeting with sponsors from Air Canada, Dairy Queen, Wal-Mart and Ace Hardware – and, of course, no trip to Orlando is complete without meeting Mickey Mouse. “At the airport, we were greeted by the Air Canada staff with balloons and special treatment! The girls were invited to go to the cockpit and sit in the pilot chairs! Reading through the Air Canada pamphlets we saw Gianna posted in the menu section. Her face was everywhere!” said Tes. “Once we landed in Orlando, Disney greeted us all and escorted us to our rooms. The first night we had some time off so we went to Universal Orlando for some family time. It was amazing and the girls had so much fun. On Monday we had our first champion breakfast and met with all the champion families. It was so special to meet all the families and kids and we all connected well.” On Wednesday, March 20, the Champions were treated to special performances and a video message from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during a Facebook “live-athon” event hosted by Twitch, from the Ellen

show, and his wife Allison. Gianna won an award for laughter. “It was such an amazing experience and it is a true blessing to have been able to be part of this all and meet such amazing people,” said Tes Eusebio. “This is why it is so important to keep sharing Gianna’s story and keep everyone’s heart open to giving. There are many kids still out there that need our help and it is important that we make more miracles happen like Gianna’s! So please give!” To donate to the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, visit Gianna’s page at goodbear.ca. Photos from the Eusebio family.

How I experienced stronger Filipino culture outside my native country Sabrina Paras was awarded the 2018 ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence last June based on her high school GPA, a group interview, and an essay in response to the question, “How do values and cultural stereotypes affect your Filipino identity in Canada?” The following essay was her submission. Throughout my whole life in the Philippines, I was surrounded with close friends and families. We never sought to travel outside the country since wherever we went in the Philippines, we had kind family friends to conveniently accommodate us in their hometown and we would, in turn, do the same. I never gave much thought to the idea until years later when I had to adapt to the sudden changes that came with my immigration to Canada. It made me realize the value in these Filipino values I had taken for granted. The biggest impact of this realization was right when my family and I arrived in Winnipeg for the first time. Landing in this new country felt like stepping into a whole new world. I was worried for my family; that we would have trouble fitting in. When we stepped down from the escalator in the airport, I was surprised when we were greeted by Filipino families who I had never met before. They

welcomed us with open arms like we were naturally a part of them. With about five cars, they drove us to our new apartment where our kitchen cabinets were filled with a variety of grocery products and second-hand furniture placed around in every room waiting to be displayed. The generosity we received was overwhelming and what I experienced that day felt like the whole embodiment of Filipino unity in the bayanihan spirit. It has been three years now since then, and their generosity has impacted me in many ways. We have settled in our new home and I’m delighted to be able to continue their generosity by helping new family friends in Winnipeg in as many ways as I can; whether that would be donating my shrunken sweaters and small winter coats to new little cousins or offering to play with and look after them whenever their parents are busy with work. These small favours inspired me to get involved with volunteering during my second year in high school. I managed to branch out into other communities, one of which being the Youth in Philanthropy community where youth have an opportunity to be involved with volunteering outside of school and organize an annual grant recommendation to non-profit charities in Winnipeg. While our willingness to

help and our strong bayanihan spirit is admirable, personally I would say hospitability is what makes a Filipino truly unique. Hospitality was apparent to me in the Philippines as well as in Winnipeg due to our large Filipino community. When I participated in an exchange program in Japan last year, I instantly felt it heavily missing during my stay. Fortunately, I went with nine other Canadian students who I quickly became friends with during the trip. If I had travelled alone, I’m sure it would have been additionally challenging to adjust in Japan, as I am not used to the absence of the usual friendly and welcoming habit of Filipinos. Therefore, when the program had asked us regarding our interest in hosting Japanese exchange students, I felt compelled to sign up as I am sure they have had the same worries I once had when I signed up for my exchange. My family and I managed to properly assist our exchange student without any trouble. I am thankful my family was supportive of that, as I would not have met my friend Kai if they hadn’t been. These Filipino habits and values have helped me develop my personality and have moulded me into what I am today. Through the compassion our family friends who reached out to us on our arrival, and

ANAK’s Andrew Aviso presenting Sabrina Paras with her award at the Glenlawn Collegiate convocation. through my Filipino schoolmates who initiated friendships with me on my first day of school and many other connections that came with, I was able to realize how remarkable our values are from the multicultural society of Canada. With that, I learned to appreciate and understand my Filipino culture and I pride myself in being a Filipino now more than ever. Sources • Abrugar, Victorino Q. “14 Good Filipino Habits that Make

Naging paksa kasi namin sa Take It.

SHOWBIZ SHOWBUZZ PILIPINO EXPRESS

Not your model minority Tackling deep rooted stigmas through powerful storytelling

by Gina Contreras My inspiration to create Not Your Model Minority, an online story telling platform, stemmed from a conversation I had with a friend. We would share our personal mental health struggles and the difficulties we faced in regards to self-care especially when our lives were so busy with school, work, family and friends. One day, she approached me and asked if I was willing to drive her to an appointment to seek counselling. She was afraid to go alone, and her parents refused to accompany her. They couldn’t comprehend why she would have any reason to be depressed. They said that they had worked so hard to give her everything she needed – everything she wanted. The rejection she was feeling from her parents made me angry. I questioned why any parent would react that way. But, I realized that I had many friends who experienced a similar reaction when telling their parents about possible mental health issues. Asians living in North America represent one of the fastest growing ethnic minority groups with significant unmet mental health needs. Sometimes, these unmet needs stem from the “model minority” stereotype that suggests Asians are more academically, economically and socially successful than other racial minority groups. It contributes to the stigma that mental health issues do not affect them.

That is often not the case. Not Your Model Minority aims to start a conversation about mental health and the stigma surrounding it. It combines the topic of mental health with social media to create an online community of minorities and young people to start a conversation about mental health. It’s an online space for Asians to share their stories in dealing with shame, lack of support and ignorance when living with mental illness. The older generations in the Asian communities don’t fully understand what mental illness is and the effects it can have on someone’s life. It’s a very hushhush topic that needs to be talked about. The goal of Not Your Model Minority is to foster an environment of understanding, patience and support to overcome the battle of mental health. It’s a platform designed to ease the conversation between younger generations and their parents. Often times, children of immigrant families feel like their parents won’t understand. There’s this common perception that our parents, who immigrated to Canada, had it much harder than we did. There’s fear that we’ll be told we’re being over-dramatic or weak, and sometimes kids are just told to pray about it. Ideas of hardship can be different from parents that emigrated from Asian countries compared to kids born in Canada. These generations handle stress and anxiety in different ways.

SAHAYA... From page 12 admiration. In her titular role as Sahaya, Bianca breathes life into a beautiful Badjaw lady blessed with extraordinary abilities which will lead her to inspire her family and her people, including Ahmad, her simple childhood friend who has always been in love with her, portrayed by Miguel. Adding a twist to their story is Jordan, played by Migo, the wealthy Manileño who will compete with Ahmad for Sahaya’s love. Joining them in this intriguing series are talented actors and actresses: Eric Quizon as Hubert, Jordan’s father whose business is coral mining at Sahaya’s village in TawiTawi; Zoren Legaspi as Harold, Sahaya’s father who abandons her mother before he knew that they were about to have a child; Mylene Dizon as Manisan, a Badjaw who fell for Harold and ended up raising and teaching their daughter, Sahaya, resiliency and good values; Pen Medina as Panglima Alari, Manisan’s father and the panglima (leader) of the Sama Dilaut; Debra Liz as Babu, Sahaya’s cheerful grandmother; Juan Rodrigo as Bapa, older brother of Panglima Alari; Ana Roces as Irene,

However, it doesn’t invalidate what someone may be going through. Mental illness is beyond physical illnesses. Sometimes, young people just need parents to listen to them without judgement. Families are often our strongest support system. If young people are told to “get over it” – it can potentially make their mental health struggles worse. It can become isolating and detrimental to their recovery. Stigma is still a huge factor

disorder, schizophrenia or an eating disorder. As mental health becomes more of a prominent topic in society, it’s our duty to educate ourselves and those around us. We want to encourage people, especially the younger generations, to speak up. Stigmas can only be broken if we call for change and expose the harm it creates. We want to ask these hard questions and show these hard facts to expose the bigger issue. Not Your Model Minority

hopes to share more stories of brave individuals. People can visit the website at nymmwpg. com or find the social media accounts @nymmwpg to share their own stories or contribute their thoughts, experiences and lessons about this cultural stigma. If people become more willing to speak about mental illness, we can help those who may be suffering in silence. Gina Contreras is a 2nd year Creative Communications student at Red River College.

when it comes to lack of diagnosis for those living with mental health concerns. We discovered that factors, including culture, lack of time and money, confidentiality and language limitations are other reasons treatment is not sought out. It’s important to note that mental illness can manifest in several ways. It is not “onesize-fits-all.” Someone can live with depression, bipolar

Harold’s loyal wife who will do anything to protect her family; Ashley Ortega as Lindsay, Jordan’s spoiled cousin and the school’s queen bee; and Snooky Serna as Salida, a loving yet vengeful mother who will be the reason why Manisan and Sahaya will be separated. Playing very special roles are Benjamin Alves as Aratu, Salida’s son and Manisan’s husband; Gil Cuerva as the young Harold; Karl Medina as young Alari and Jasmine Curtis-Smith as the young Manisan. To shed light on the culture of our Badjaw brothers and sisters, GMA 7 hired consultants and recreated an entire set

reminiscent of a real Badjaw village in Calatagan, Batangas that will bring viewers a realistic vision of their community – a surprising feat only the Kapuso Network delivers in a remarkable manner. Likewise for this program, the Network sets the bar even higher as it uses for the first time a high-end cinema camera to create clean,

sharp and cinematic images. Sahaya is created through the visionary minds of writers Marlon Miguel and Jonathan Cruz. Aloy Adlawan is the Creative Director and Suzette Doctolero headwrites the show. This grand production is under the helm of esteemed director Zig Dulay.

CRISTY...

Criteria of the IPC include: • a valid work permit • one year of work experience as a home childcare provider or home support worker, or a combination of experience in both occupations • a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark 5 level in reading, writing, listening and speaking in English or French • a foreign equivalent or Canadian high school diploma • If you can’t get your Educational Credential Assessment before the deadline, you must provide proof that you’ve applied to get one • If you can’t get your language test results in time before the deadline, you must show proof of an appointment to take the test along with the date According to IRCC, applications for permanent residence through the IPC will be processed in 12 months and

there is no cap on the number of caregivers, with their spouses or common-law partners and dependent children, who will be accepted. In addition to the IPC, two other programmes will launch in June 2019 – The Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot. The new pilots will each have a maximum of 2,750 principal applicants, for a combined total of 5,500 principal applicants per year. Spouses and common-law partners and dependent children will not count against the limit. Under the new pilots, in-home caregivers will get occupationspecific work permits, which will provide greater flexibility in changing jobs when necessary. Caregivers will also have more opportunity to bring their family with them to Canada, as their spouses or common-law partners will be eligible for an open work permit and their dependent children will be eligible for a study permit. CRISTY... From page 17 ‘yan!

Sabi ng kaniyang PA, See CRISTY p20

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept.

Diretso niya kaming tiningnan, ang kaniyang sabi, “Bukas, sisikat uli ang araw and tomorrow is another day.

CRISTY... From page 20 Tito Eddie.

Pinays MB honours Filipino women achievers The annual Pinays Recognition Luncheon in honour of International women’s Day was held last March 23 at the Marlborough Hotel in Winnipeg. Led by its president, Perla Javate, Pinays MB Inc. is now in its 4th year recognizing the outstanding achievements and contributions of Filipino women in Manitoba. This year, the 2019 Pinay Trailblazer Awardees are Loizza Aquino, Melody Balane and Ma-anne Dionisio. During the program, MLA for Logan, Flor Marcelino, delivered the keynote address. Donna Natividad Arenas of CKJS Radio with Arlene Ilag emceed the event. The 2019 Pinay Trailblazer Awardees Loizza Aquino – for her outstanding leadership and advocacy for Mental Health. Born in the Philippines, her family immigrated to Winnipeg in 2000 when she was one year old. At the age of 15, she created a mental health advocacy group in her school after losing her best friend, Miguel, to suicide. Miguel was one of four high school students who died in Winnipeg by suicide within one month. This would be the turning point for her in terms of advocacy. She became an advocate for positive mental health, especially within high schools, knowing that 100 per cent of suicides are preventable. Realizing that the things lacking in terms of mental health were conversation, awareness, and education, she created a non-profit organization called Peace of Mind, comprised of young people working to eradicate the stigma surrounding mental health. It started with 10 students in her school. Now her

–CSF
