Canada celebrates first Filipino Heritage Month

It was October 30, 2018 when the House of Commons of Canada adopted Motion 155 declaring “June as Filipino Heritage Month” nationwide.

Paulina Corpuz of Toronto, Ontario started with a petition to establish Filipino Heritage Month. Through the sponsorship of Councillor Neehan Shan, a motion was submitted to the City of Toronto Council, and with the endorsement of various individuals and organizations, the motion was approved unanimously by city council. It was then moved and introduced in the House of Commons by Liberal MP for Scarborough Centre, Salma Zahid.

Most of the 69 shipping containers of Canadian trash that have been the focus of controversy in the Philippines since 2014 are on their way back to Canada.

The containers were loaded onto a ship belonging the Canadian arm of the French shipping company Bollore Logistics at the port in Subic Bay in the early morning hours of May 31. They are destined for a Wasteto-Energy Facility in Burnaby BC. where it will be processed to produce enough electricity to power about 16,000 homes.

Scamming Almost overnight, it seems, Mindanao has been overrun by get-rich-quick schemes that promise unbelievable returns for one’s investment. It started with a group calling itself “Kapa” (short for KAbus PAdatoon, which is “make the poor rich” in Visayan), a group led by a self-proclaimed pastor who promises 30-per cent interest every month “until forever.” The twist in Kapa’s operation, and the one that its leader and members use in their claim that this is no scam, is that no actual investments are made or solicited. Instead the members “donate” the money, and it is this amount that is used for various “investments” that yield the 30per cent interest.

Kapa has grown to several thousands of members since gaining traction last year, and its members can be very rabid in supporting their pastor. Like most things these days, Kapa has a presence on social media and even uses it to expand its operations, and it is on this platform that members often spew abuse against those who are vocal in criticizing the group. I have friends who have been called liars and branded

as stupid for daring to call Kapa a scam, using their own earnings – called “pay-out” in these parts – as proof that their operations are legit. I’ve seen photos of people showing off bundles of cash and promising recruits that they stand to earn the same; they can be pretty convincing for those who want to earn money the easy way.

But as with any scheme that becomes successful, Kapa has been copied by various other groups with promises of even bigger returns – ranging from 40 per cent to a full 100 per cent interest per month. There are now so many it’s hard to keep tabs on them. I can only recall the names Rigen Marketing and ALMAMICO (Alabel Maasim Small Scale Mining Cooperative), but there are quite a few more.

Most of them differentiate themselves from Kapa by introducing products – and even bitcoins – into their marketing schemes, but the heart of their operations is the promise of unrealistically high interest yields.

The twist is that these new schemes are attracting even members of Kapa, so much so that its leader has noticed that the

number of his investors is starting to dip. This prompted him to issue a declaration a few days ago saying any Kapa member who invests in other groups will be blacklisted. To me this shows the basic flaw of scams like these: they depend on people coming in to the group with fresh money (called “pay-in”), which is used to pay those who had joined before them (called pay-out). As long as there are new people paying in, Kapa and the other groups can continue paying out the earlier members.

Eventually, however, there will be no more people to recruit.

No matter how hard it tries, the organization will not be able to entice any more people to pay in, and when that happens the whole thing collapses. Unfortunately it will be the vast majority who came in late who would bear the brunt of the collapse, and they stand to lose heavily.

It’s easy to blame the rise of scams like these to poverty and the ignorance it often breeds, but the reality is that a lot of people who “invest” in them are actually from the middle class and presumably well educated. Many of them can even afford to put in sixdigit figures. The rush to invest is fuelled by stories of people who strike it rich. Everyone seems to know a teacher who paid in P10,000 and earned P100,000, or a government worker who

plunked in P50,000 and earned P500,000, or a doctor who invested P1 million and ended up with P5 million.

I have several co-workers who have withdrawn their life savings and invested in some of these get-rich-quick schemes, and they based their decision on some of these stories. They cite friends who earn huge sums in their payout, but when I ask them if their friends already collected their money, they would invariable say, “Wala pa, sa next pay-out pa.” (“Not yet, [but on the] next pay-out.”) It all appears to be on paper and amounts to nothing but promises.

I tell these co-workers that even if they manage to get a return on their investments, it would be at the expense of hundreds or even thousands of others who will not be able to collect on their pay-in. That’s when they display the kind of attitude that fuels these scams: “Bahala na. At least nakaganansiya ko.” (“I don’t care. At least I earn my money.”)

Pay it forward As we celebrate FilipinoCanadian Heritage Month this June, I am reminded of the richness of the Filipino culture.

The many customs and traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation remind me of how our values and beliefs are shaped to who we are today.

From bayanihan to responding to elders with “po” and “opo,” there is something about our heritage that makes it truly unique.

Speaking of unique, what really stands out for me are the thousands of salawikain that we inherited from our ancestors from centuries ago. Salawikain, as we know, are sayings or proverbs, which originated from the wisdom of elders based either on common sense or experience.

Dr. Jose Rizal coined one of the most popular salawikain, which states, “Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan hindi makararating sa pinaroroonan.” This brilliant maxim directly translates to “He who does not know how to look back at where he came from will never get to his destination.”

I have always understood Rizal’s quote to mean that people who do not show respect and

appreciation for their roots are destined to have a fruitless future.

While this famous line appears to refer to a citizen’s love for their country and their origins, it can also be interpreted in such a way in which it can be applied in the workplace or everyday life.

Whether we notice or not, the concept of this particular saying actually manifests itself in the “pay it forward” principle. We see a lot of examples in the media, particularly on the Internet. In one viral video I saw recently, a homeless man discovers that a stranger left some cash for him while he was sleeping. He goes to a store and buys groceries not for himself, but for other hungry homeless people on the street.

As we know, the concept of “paying it forward” is not about returning the favour to an anonymous person who does us favour. It is about repaying the favour to someone else.

When we are influenced by what others have done for us, we are motivated to continue spreading the good deed with others.

In the workplace, there are many ways that we can start a random chain of good deeds.

However, as we know, it’s a dog

eat dog kind of world out there where employees are always competing with one another and do anything in their power to gain advantage. Because of this, the culture of self-entitlement cannot be avoided and, as we know, this type of mentality creates tension in the workplace and can degrade relationships between co-workers and employers.

So, how do we pay it forward?

Well, it is not hard if we think about it. Positive deeds yield positive results. For instance, when your co-worker thinks of an idea on how to improve sales or productivity and you happen to participate in that discussion, try not to take credit for it or claim that it was your idea in the first place. You can pay it forward by taking a few minutes to tell your manager about it and how you think it can positively impact your team overall.

Another way of paying forward is helping a co-worker with their workload. For example, if you work in an office setting, filing and all those mindless repetitive tasks can take a toll on someone. If you happen to have a lighter workload one day and notice a colleague struggling to accomplish their work, you could really give that person a good energy boost by helping them.

Fostering a positive atmosphere could positively impact the team and the overall work environment

as well.

“Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa pinaroroonan” essentially teaches us that we need to appreciate who we are and what makes us who we are. It is about embracing our identity as a person regardless of how successful we become.

Resolving the Canadian garbage issue

by Kevin Lamoureux, MP Winnipeg North People who know me, know that I am passionate about Canada, but that I also care deeply about the Philippines. I have been eager to see the ongoing issue of garbage resolved quickly, and I am happy to report that it will soon be behind us.

Back in 2013 and 2014 a private company in Canada shipped just over 100 containers of questionable material to a private company in the Philippines. Of those containers, 69 held garbage that included things like used adult diapers. It was a private business arrangement that ultimately went bad when the importer determined that the 69 containers were filled with garbage and of no value to

him. It is not clear how the other containers were disposed of, but we know that today the issue is about those 69 containers.

As the companies disputed their claims against each other, ultimately involving lawyers and court actions, the waste remained in the containers. Eventually the dispute concluded in a decision that did not resolve the issue due to the viability of the companies involved.

What started as a simple private transaction then became a complicated issue between two nations, leaving civil servants to figure out what to do. Days turned to weeks, followed by months and now years. I remember bringing the issue up in my last trip to the Philippines back in August 2018.

I was interested in the issue back than because I recalled President Duterte and Prime Minister Trudeau mentioned the issue a few years ago when they first met. The Canadian Ambassador told me that the President raised

the issue to a very sympathetic Prime Minister and that set the stage for the issue to be resolved.

A special group of people were tasked to do just that. It seemed to me back then that the container issue would likely require the Government of Canada to be involved in some way, even though it was originally a private transaction.

When I review the past six years I would summarize the delay by suggesting it happened because of a private deal gone bad, followed by a lengthy court process, followed by being tied up in our bureaucracies.

It should be noted that when the containers were shipped, it was under the Harper Government – when an exporting company did not have any responsibility to ensure that the receiving country would allow the type of content that was being shipped. At that time, Canada’s regulations did not comply with the international standards set out in the Basel

Convention.

In 2016, the Trudeau Government amended Canadian regulations to prevent this situation from happening again.

Given the importance of our environment, I am upset – like other Canadians – that it took as long as it did to resolve. For that reason I applaud President Duterte and his actions on the file – with the exception that a few more weeks would have been nice for a deadline.

The Government of Canada responded in two ways: first, by accepting the costs associated with the preparation, transfer, shipment, and disposal of the waste and; second, we sped up the normal tendering process and awarded a contract to Bolloré Logistics Canada, who has already begun preparation for shipping in the coming days.

I am personally hoping that most, if not all, of the 69 containers will have departed the Philippines by June 12 and I

suspect there could even be some containers loaded before this edition is circulated.

As someone who has followed the issue, I am embarrassed that the process took as long as it did. I would apologize for the delay and at the same time thank Ministers Freeland and McKenna here in Canada for both getting directly engaged on the file and getting the issue resolved. With hindsight it is unfortunate that it was not done earlier. However, I would recognize that President Duterte’s engagement made it an issue that drew in the politicians and for me it speaks well of the fact that when the political will is there, things can happen quickly.

Ironically, just a few days ago, MetroVancouver issued a statement saying it would receive the waste and dispose of it at its Waste-to-Energy Facility in Burnaby. The energy from the disposal process will produce enough electricity to power about 16,000 homes.

When we arrived in Winnipeg 25 years ago, I was a simply a toddler then and didn’t fully understand what was going on.

Little did I know, this was a huge moment for my family and me.

Although I was raised here, I feel so grateful because there are so many opportunities to stay connected to my Filipino roots.

Family For me, everything started at home. “No English at home” was a rule that I grew up with.

My mom didn’t want me to lose the ability to speak and understand Tagalog. Every time I spoke to her in English, she would motion to me in a way that implied, “I don’t understand what you’re saying,” as a way

for me to finally communicate in our native tongue. Boy, am I ever grateful for this. I love being able to converse with my family, friends, and the community in Tagalog. When doing so, it automatically makes me feel connected to them in a

very special way. Plus, I get to understand all the teleseryes and Filipino movies on Netflix without having to rely on the subtitles. Thanks mom!

Food Our dinner table was always filled with delicious homemade Filipino dishes. Everything from sinigang, adobo, tinola, tosino, kare kare, lugaw, you name it! Our culture has some of the tastiest dishes! When I lived on my own in Toronto, when I felt

homesick, one of the things I would do to bring me comfort was make a Filipino dish for dinner. So good!

Community Winnipeg, we are so blessed to have a strong Filipino community and so many people who care about the preservation of our culture. We have several wonderful festivals and events that bring us together to celebrate and take pride in our heritage. As someone who grew up here, I

am so appreciative to learn more about who I am through my culture.

I am incredibly proud to be Filipino-Canadian and I’m thrilled to walk hand-in-hand as a community into the month of June to celebrate the very first Filipino-Canadian Heritage Month across the nation.

The feng shui of infidelity and faithfulness in love Few things are as painful as a relationship that goes awry.

Whether it’s grown cold or there is an interloper, the pain is still hard to cope with. Strong relationships and marriages are built on mutual affection, friendship and trust.

Keeping your relationship secure and strong is sometimes harder than letting it go.

Remaining true and committed can test even the hardiest and most devoted couples.

But if you’ve had problems with faithfulness and infidelity, feng shui may be able to help.

There is no ironclad cure of infidelity and no guarantee of faithfulness, unless the wandering partner decides to change and wants to remain faithful.

However, feng shui can help you tilt the scales and could be the nudge required to move it back to a loving and faithful relationship.

Use these tips to help you if your relationship has been going through turbulent waters. It might be all you need to bring back those loving feelings — or save a relationship on the brink.

Strengthen your relationship.

One of the difficulties in relationships is if the southwest sector is missing.

This means love is either absent, or may leave. In this instance, it’s a good idea to make sure that there is something in this corner of your home or living room to activate the love energy, such as a lamp, a love symbol, or a picture of the couple.

Add mountains for stability.

The southwest corner is the corner of love and marriage. Make your relationships rock solid with an image of the earth, a mountain, or

map images. This signifies strength and the goodness of the earth. Not only that but mountains are one of the most precious feng shui symbols. They represent the gold and riches within, much like the love and care inside a committed and loving relationship.

Manage mirrors. Whenever mirrors are in the bedroom, it invites intrusion into the relationship. Mirrors should never reflect the bed and are best left out of the bedroom altogether.

Anchor the bed and your relationship with a geode. When wandering occurs in a relationship, especially if the wanderer is a male, add an amethyst geode tied with a red ribbon and tie it to the foot of the bed. The geode represents the riches of a faithful relationship and symbolizes the anchoring and faithfulness to keep the man’s eyes from wandering and looking outside the relationship.

The cold kitchen hurts love.

Too often relationships wither when the kitchen grows cold.

It’s important that the kitchen is used frequently and that the fire of the family kitchen never goes out. Be sure to cook frequently and always leave a light on in the kitchen. Meals and cooking are synonymous with a happy, health family, so keep those home fires burning.

Add a fox to stop third-party interference. When an outsider tries to break up a relationship, it’s helpful to carry a fox amulet or figure made of obsidian. Two are even better. Carry one for yourself and add one to the personal love direction of your partner or place in his or her car to ward off interlopers.

Keep the front door from

pushing love away. Your front door is key to your relationship success. Watch that you don’t have a water feature to the right of the front door (as you look out of the house), or it will attract predatory females to men. A water feature or a mirror opposite the door will push love or your partner out of the house.

Birds bring them back – and make them stay. If you have lost your relationship and want your sweetheart to return, add a picture of a bird flying into the house on the left side of the front door (as you face the front door from inside). Add your sweetheart’s image next to the bird. Make sure it is well lit and that the bird appears to be flying in. You can add a drawing or a photo of a bird here. Once your love has returned, add a pair of lovebirds such as Mandarin ducks, geese or cranes in the southwest corner of your home or living room to inspire devotion and tender love.

Keep your love alive and restore harmony. Maintaining a love relationship is something that has to be worked on to keep your love alive and fresh. Add a phoenix and dragon figurine in the southwest for love luck and to strengthen the woman of the house, the northwest to strengthen to man of the house, and the east wall to benefit the whole family.

Be careful of garages in these sectors. Many times couples stray because the garage is located in either the northwest of southwest corner. This means that the man or woman come and go often. This can cause one to be gone too often to sustain a relationship. Add an image of a mountain in either direction if your garage is located in either of these corners.

FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My mum passed away in April after a long life, but I miss her and my dad who passed away almost two years ago. Can feng shui help with grief?

Answer: I’m so sorry for your loss. Mother’s Day brings those feelings to the surface when you don’t have your mother any longer – or for those whose mother was cold and distant, it’s a reminder of what they never had. The heartache over the loss of a mother or the absence of your mother’s love is hard to move past. But, yes, you can use feng shui to help with grief.

One of the best ways to handle grief is to acknowledge your parents. Find a photo of a good time or one you really love of your parents and have it framed.

Buy some pretty flowers and a candle and make a small spot for the photo on a table. Light the

candle whenever you are thinking of them.

You can also do a thorough cleaning. Set a glass jar with water in the sun and let it sit out all day.

The next day, mop and clean with the sunshine water. It will help lift your home’s energy and cleanse it.

For yourself, try taking a salt bath with petals from 7 flowers to help your body clear the grief. Lastly, bring brightly coloured flowers into your home.

Designated countries of origin removed from the political landscape In a press release, dated May 17, 2019, the department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that it was removing all countries from the designated country of origin list. This decision may come as a surprise, especially to those who are not even be aware of the list. The Designated Countries of Origin (DCO) list should serve as a contrast between the Conservative government of Stephen Harper who imposed the list back in 2012 and the current Liberal government of Justin Trudeau who have now removed it. What is this list of foreign countries and what purpose did it play?

The former Harper government was not very supportive of immigration and instituted a number of policies and practices intended to cut immigration to Canada. Their outlook is apparent in their approach to refugee claims and demand to redress “abuses” in the system. They established a list of countries that “do not normally produce refugees and respect human rights and offer state protection.”

The Harper government

identified 42 so-called “safe” countries so they could expedite claims from foreign nationals from these countries. The initial Designated Countries of Origins, dated December 15, 2012, included Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Claimants from this list of countries were subject to a six-month bar on work permits, a bar on appeals to the Refugee Appeals Division, limited access to the Interim Federal Public Health Program and a 36-month bar on the PreRemoval Risk Assessment. In other words, don’t let them work or have health coverage and other options such a Pre-Removal Risk Assessment, which examines individual claims and impact, and maybe they would leave.

Was the problem of claims from DCO countries really significant, or something that looked good to Conservative supporters and captured headlines of the day?

The full impact of the DCO policy has since been challenged by a series of reversals in Federal Court where certain provisions of the DCO policy were struck down because they did not comply with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The courts are in place to ensure that all persons in Canada have certain basic rights and freedoms and it is important to note that the removal of the Designated Countries of Origin can be expected to have minimal or no impact on: • Visa policy decisions, • Secisions at the independent Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB); • Asylum claims, which are adjudicated on the basis of the independent merits of individual claims; From January 1, 2013 to March 31, 2019, citizens from designated countries of origin made only 12 per cent of asylum claims, and the current 2019 budget increases have been provided to increase the capacity of the asylum system and shorten waiting times.

The Liberal government’s reason for removing the DCO

designation is that it failed to improve the asylum adjudication system in Canada.

“The designated-countries-of-origin policy not only failed to improve the efficiency of the asylum system, it compromised the principle that all people should be treated equally, regardless of nationality,” IRCC Minister Ahmed Hussen noted. The issue of the DCO is not over; you can expect the attacks on the Liberals’ approach to immigration to escalate in the coming months. If Donald Trump can put children in cages what can we expect from like-minded opponents to immigration in general and asylum seekers in particular in Canada?

The Designated Country of Origin is one of those grand ideas promoted by persons on the right side of the political landscape and condemned by those to the left or centre. It was an idea intended to punish claimants and dissuade others from claiming asylum in Canada – and to play to a nationalist base in Canada.

The problem was overblown and the solution illegal. We should breathe a sigh of relief that

our court system saw through the rhetoric and ruled that the Canadian Charter of Rights does not support the basic premise of excluding someone on the basis of where they are from. Each claimant should have a chance to have their claim heard based on the merits of their case. One should not be judged on where they come from but rather if they deserve special protection under Canadian law. An ethical society should respect the least vulnerable and provide protection, not persecution and torture as in America today with asylum families torn apart and separated children placed in cages. We need to understand and guard our basic principles and rights. This is what keeps us great.

Kimberly Solis – Red River College Westland Foundation Scholar

by Marilyn Camaclang Kimberly Solis was born and raised in Winnipeg to Filipino immigrant parents. Her father is from Cavite, and her mother is from Laguna, Philippines respectively.

Kimberly recalled working two to three part-time jobs while in high school and university.

Throughout her years of being a student, she focused on finishing her Criminal Justice degree.

Wanting to make her parents proud, Kimberly worked hard on excelling in each class. Her hard work did not go unnoticed when she awarded a scholarship from the Westland Foundation in 2012.

“I did not think I was able to ever get a scholarship in my life, but I did,” said Kimberly. From then on, she has believed that education and hard work lead to success. Kimberly said the Westland Foundation helped her financially by paying for some of her tuition at Red River College.

Kimberly is now working as a counsellor at United Church Halfway Homes. She also operates her own beauty business called Kim Chatelaine. She is now helping out her parents, who both work part-time, and she has a brother who finished college last year and is currently working, too.

“I was helped by the Westland Foundation financially, and now I am helping others as well,” she said.

Kimberly pays it forward by donating to her church and volunteering. Last January, she went to California on a mission trip to help previous law offenders, drug addicts, sex trade workers and homeless people.

She helped build furniture for low-income families so that the Child and Family Youth Services would not take their children away. She also gave out food to many families and cleaned up garbage out there.

Kimberly advises young people to put God first, be healthy and to believe in themselves. She says not to let anyone put them down and to surround themselves with positive influences and people who want them to grow.

“I believe that there is always a reason for whatever happens in our lives. The challenges and trials that we go through in life make us stronger. We become more knowledgeable, and we gain more wisdom from our difficult experiences. However, the choices that we make every day, whether it is positive or negative is what directs us to our future,” said Kimberly.

Kimberly Solis was a featured Red River College Westland Foundation Scholar on the Foundation’s video presented at the 2019 Fundraising Breakfast held last May 15th at the RBC Convention Centre.

Westland breakfast supports scholarships WINNIPEG – The Westland Foundation fundraising breakfast, in support of inner-Winnipeg scholarships, took place at the RBC Convention Centre on May 15, with guest speaker Mayor Brian Bowman.

The event highlighted Westland Scholars and high school students who are soonto-be Westland Foundation Education Fund Scholarship recipients.

“It was great to attend and speak at today’s fundraising breakfast in support of the Westland Foundation’s Education Fund Scholarships,” said Mayor Brian Bowman.

“We’re grateful for the Westland Foundation’s efforts toward supporting innerWinnipeg students with scholarships to help them gain post-secondary education.”

The Westland Foundation annually holds a fundraising breakfast in support of inner-Winnipeg students’ scholarships. The Foundation’s ultimate goal is to provide every inner-Winnipeg student with a full post-secondary scholarship.

Pinays MB Inc. elects new executive officers Pinays MB Inc. has elected a new set of officers to its Board of Directors. They are: Araceli Ancheta, President; Winnie Navarro, Vice-president; Roselyn Advincula, Secretary; Connie De Villa, Treasurer; Trifona Bermisa, Auditor; Emmie Joaquin, PRO; and Perla Javate, Ex-officio Director.

Established in January 2016 by its founding president Perla Javate with the support of 20 founding members, Pinays MB Inc. aims to recognize women in the community who made outstanding contributions to the

Filipino community and also in the mainstream community; provide support to Filipino women through confidence building, leadership, communication, training and participation in organized activities; identify and address women issues such as domestic violence prevention, immigrant settlement issues, and more.

The board elections took place during the organization’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Winnipeg last May 26, 2019. It was attended by a majority of its founding members.

Filipinos singing for their lives Home grown musical holds first public reading at Prairie Theatre Exchange

Rainbow Stage is excited to present a public reading of Joseph Sevillo and Josh Caldo’s new musical, MA-BUHAY! Joseph and Josh have been working together to create a Broadway-style musical that will pave the way for future Filipino singers, dancers, and actors in Winnipeg, and give them the opportunity to work professionally in the performing arts.

The story of MA-BUHAY! is a fictional story that follows the journey of three young singing hopefuls, Honey Mae Dizon, David Caballero and Celina Molina, as they compete in the grand finals of the televised reality singing competition Star On The Rise! The story contains Joseph and Josh’s observations of their own culture, touching on the subjects of poverty, religion, family and the standards of being a Filipino.

Rainbow Stage has offered MA-BUHAY! the financial and artistic support necessary to present their first public reading at the PTE Festival of New Works.

This musical is still in development and is seeking the support of sponsorships, grants, and private donors to help Rainbow Stage develop MA-BUHAY! from the ground up here in Winnipeg.

Joseph has been a professional musical theatre performer across Canada for 23 years as a singer, dancer, actor, and choreographer.

He is the co-teacher for the entire musical theatre department at the Shelley Shearer School of Dance as well as a Co-founder / Director of Broadway Dance Convention.

Josh and Joseph met during a career mentorship program through Daniel Macintyre Collegiate. Josh has always been involved in singing and theatre for as long as he could remember. A year of knowing each other, Josh has already

landed two professional contracts in Winnipeg Studio Theatre’s productions of Reefer Madness, and Pippin, performing alongside his mentor Joseph Sevillo. This is their first endeavour as co-writers, lyricists and composers. They are also working closely with fellow musician Andrew Nolan to create the fun filled score full of all different styles that Filipino karaoke singers enjoy!

The first reading is a star studded all-Filipino Winnipeg cast with Dutchess Cayetano, Josh Caldo and Mimoza Duot playing the three young leads. The supporting principals are Rochelle Kives, Joy Lazo, Raymond Padua, Robin Jordan Quintana, and Gordon Buduhan.

The public reading will be held on Saturday, June 1, 7:00 p.m. at the Prairie Theatre Exchange, 3rd floor, Portage Place Mall.

Environment group holds community workshop

by Jomay Amora-Dueck The environment group, Caring for our EnvironmentManitoba Inc. (CEM), held its first community workshop focused on waste recycling, reduction and composting.

The workshop was held on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at the Garden City Community Centre – Seven Oaks Arena.

Approximately 50 leaders from various Filipino-Canadian community organizations participated in the workshop.

CEM, in partnership with the Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association (CBCRA) and the Green Action Centre, is a non-profit organization that aims to promote awareness and understanding of environment and sustainability issues.

“For many years, we have seen the growing problem of waste and plastic pollution in both the local and global scale,” said Ramon Sales, CEM President. “If not properly addressed, waste will continue to pose a threat to public health and our environment.”

Hundreds of species have died ingesting plastic, oceans are filling with garbage at an unprecedented scale, and a significant amount of recyclable materials and food waste end up in our landfills, thereby rapidly changing the quality of our

environment.

“As an integral part of Canadian society, the Filipino community has a shared responsibility to take positive action for the benefit of both the present and future generations,” he added.

Speakers from CBCRA and the Green Action Centre facilitated the discussions, practical demonstrations and

interactive group exercises that promote zero waste and sustainable living.

“Recycle Everywhere is happy to partner with CEM to help them achieve their sustainability goals by recycling empty beverage containers in Manitoba,” said Jaclyn Diduck, CBCRA/Recycle Everywhere Senior Logistics and Schools Coordinator.

“Through the dedicated work

of the passionate CEM volunteers, we are helping the province become more sustainable while recovering valuable resources.

We look forward to developing our partnership with CEM and growing the positive impact our organizations have in Manitoba,” she added.

The event marks CEM’s advance celebration of the World Environment Day, which takes

place on June 5.

CEM started as a closed Facebook group in 2017, which now serves as a platform for information sharing on environment and sustainability issues.

Sa isang church event kamakailan ay pinakiusapan ng mga organizers ang mga parishioners at mga manonood na huwag nang kumuha ng litrato sa kanilang mga anak, apo, inaaanak o pamangkin sa pagtanggap nila ng kanilang first communion dahil makaka-distract ito sa kalagitnaan ng pagsamba o misa.

Mayroong itinalagang litratista at videographer ang simbahan para limitahan ang movements sa kalagitnaan ng pananambahan.

Dapat nga namang igalang at magkaroon ng kaayusan ang pagdiriwang ng sakramento ng banal na misa at communion.

Ganiyan din halos ang mga istilo sa mga school events.

Sa social media online market ay marami ring mga nakakahighblood na mga moments.

Kung ikaw ay nagbebenta online, ang kadalasang badtrip na eksena ay yung hindi sisipot ang iyong kausap o hindi na talaga magpapakita. Kapag nagpost ako na napakasarap ng embotido ni Aling Delia ay marami ang magtatanong, maraming mag-rereact, marami ang magco-comment ng kung anu-ano. Pero ano ang na-establish ko? Nakapag-inject ako sa utak ng mga tao na kumain ng embotido, bilhin man nila ito kay Aling Delia o hindi.
