Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Presumptive president of the Philippines
As of press time, over 98 per cent of election results have been counted according to the COMELEC transparency server. Candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has captured a huge majority of the votes, an overwhelming lead more than double that of his major opponent, Vice President Leni Robredo. Days after the May 9 elections, Marcos Jr. has also been recognized by foreign governments like the US, China, and Japan as the “president-elect.” On June 30, 2022, incumbent Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte’s term will end while the six-year term of the new president of the Philippines will begin. It is now without doubt that the presumptive Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will be proclaimed as the 17th president of the Philippines. Marcos Jr, widely known in the Philippines as Bongbong, is the second child and only son of former dictator, President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., and former First Lady, Imelda Romualdez Marcos. Vice President Leni Robredo’s message to supporters On Tuesday morning (May 10, 2022), Vice President Leni Robredo addressed her supporters, assuring them that their efforts are not wasted, as her rival Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. kept a huge lead in the presidential race. She is also being honoured for trailblazing the representation of Filipino women in the very rarely travelled career path of law enforcement. She has partnered with organizations that help survivors in their healing journey from these types of crimes. Maria is an inspirational Filipino woman who has faced life’s adversities head on, used it as fuel to empower change, and redirect the course of her life by becoming a police officer with the Winnipeg Police Service. • Dean Mariciel Nuyda is a 2022 Pinays Trailblazer because she is the first Filipino woman immigrant to become a Dean at the School for Continuing

These programs help open opportunities that positively impact the community. • Virginia (Jean) GuiangSantoro is a 2022 Pinays Trailblazer because she is the first and only Filipino woman to be given the well-deserved honour of the Order of Manitoba (2004). She is also a recipient of the RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award 2020. Jean is a well-known outstanding Filipino community leader in Winnipeg and her impressive contributions and selfless volunteerism have made positive impacts on the lives of Filipinos in Manitoba. • Dr. Crystal Paculan is a 2022 Pinays Trailblazer because she is the first Filipino woman to be licensed as a Chiropractor in Manitoba. In 2011 she
broke the glass ceiling in this male dominated field, blazing the trail for Filipino women chiropractors. Her advocacy is to help people gain optimum health through chiropractic and to empower people towards optimal health and whole-body function. • Gina Trinidad is a 2022 Pinays Trailblazer because she is the first Filipino woman visible minority at the senior executive level in the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority where she currently holds the position of Chief Health Operations Officer for Continuing Care & Community Health Services. As a Registered Nurse, Gina leads multidisciplinary teams and her leadership has been instrumental in managing multiple transformational initiatives occurring in the health system, both at the regional and provincial levels. Immigration backlogs and humanitarian support The blaring headlines on the TV broadcasts remind us that backlogs do not disappear with wishful thinking or prayers. They require a purposeful plan, adequate resources, and time. Yes, the stories are correct in the sense that things will get worse before they improve. What is the current backlog of applications in processing cues? Immigration Canada’s overall backlog stands at more than two million people across all processing streams. Temporary and permanent residence submissions have increased but Citizenship applications have decreased from 453,000 in March 2022 to 400,000 in April. There is a glimmer of hope through all the negative reporting. Even as the country starts recovering from COVID, opening our borders and welcoming newcomers, the backlog has continued to grow. In July 2021 the backlog stood at 1,447,474 and increased to 1,813,144 people by December 2021, to 1,844,424 in March 2022 and finally 2,031,589 in April 2022. At the same time, Canada has been moving to speed up the processing of Ukrainians displaced by war. The prime minister and several ministers travelled this

week to Ukraine to see firsthand the ravages of the Russian invasion as well as appreciate the contributions of Canadian aide, humanitarian, and military. The opening of the embassy in Kiev is an indication of the country’s active support and attention to the challenge. Some question the actions of the government and forget Canada’s long history of welcoming the most vulnerable, but the country should be able to address the crisis and at the same time process applications in a timely fashion. Can they accomplish both at the same time? In the first case there needs to be an acknowledgement that the response to the Russian invasion has had a major impact on the world, the world economy, and the reduction of the backlog. One has only to look at the backlog numbers which were growing slightly from 1,813,144 persons in December 2021 to 1,815,628 in February 2022. The numbers jumped almost 30,000 in the next month and then over 150,000 the following month. We can try and do both but admit that things are challenging and not easily overcome. It is one thing to say we are energy self-sufficient and then experience the sharp price increased at the pumps. The true cost of Putin’s invasion of the free Marcos Jr.’s supporters claim that the accusations, although proven in court, are not justified and not to be believed. Vice President Leni Robredo, while not mentioning the word “concede” in her public message after the May 9 elections, asked her supporters, “Whatever the results will be, let us accept it because this will bring out a bigger strength that could unite us.” Meanwhile, the other candidates like Senator Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, Mayor Isko Moreno, and Senator Ping Lacson have conceded. Meanwhile, there are those who have expressed their concern about how a Marcos Jr. presidency will play out in the next six years. Will his administration promote economic growth, respect basic human rights, and press freedom? Marcos Jr.’s devoted followers are still celebrating the triumph, but the other side remains apprehensive.
and sovereign country of Ukraine is only beginning to be felt. The impact of immigration activities related to the war in Ukraine did not affect all immigrant classes in the same way. It is noteworthy that only increases were experienced in some areas. The backlog of economic applications increased slightly from 230,767 in March compared with 236,443 in April; family class with 103,112 in March compared with 107,094 in April; humanitarian and compassionate 27,218 in March compared with 27,692 in April; and protected persons from 157,552 in March to 158,402 in April. There has been a reduction in the Express Entry backlog in April with 45,000 compared with around 52,000 in March 2022. This reduction corresponds with Immigration Minister Sean Fraser’s announcement that normal processing would return by July of this year. The Canadian Experience Class backlog numbers decreased from 10, 338 in March to 8,363 in April; the Federal Skilled Worker Program decreased from 41,336 in March to 36,281 in April; and the
Federal Skilled Trades from 589 in March to 537 in April. There is some evidence that the department’s efforts to reduce the backlog are working but we need to be aware that the backlog made worse by the COVID pandemic has been impacted by Canada’s Ukrainian response. There is a lot to do and only a limited number of resources, in manpower and money to address things. There are some who would have Canada close its ears to the cries for help. Shut your eyes to the atrocities and they will go away. No, they do not go away, and history has taught us the weaknesses of a policy of appeasement. Let the aggressor take Ukraine and the Baltic countries and Poland are not far behind. and then what? The world is a global marketplace and war, pestilence, and famine in one area can and will affect us all. The problem is widespread, and it affects us all. The tradition of our country is to address the humanitarian crisis and work at reducing the backlog simultaneously. As a country we have a responsibility to do both. The majority of Canadians remain supportive of immigration. It
works to improve the lives of those in need as well as improving the economic situation at home. There are two idiomatic expressions to cover our challenge. We can do two things at the same time or walk and chew gum and when the going gets tough, the tough get going. One final word on the county’s approach is that beyond hard work and patience, we have prayer. The presence of the prime minister in the war zone and reopening the Canadian embassy does not appear to be political posturing but a show of support for the brave people of Ukraine. They are being asked to stand and die, while we are challenged to be patient with processing times. There is a difference! No longer silent Jayden Cadag was awarded the 2021 ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence based on high school GPA, a group interview, and an essay in response to the question, “How do racial biases in the Filipino community manifest in your daily life and in what ways are you complicit?” The following was the essay submission. The Igorot people of the Philippines and the Indigenous people of Canada share many similarities. They both survived European colonization, both groups protected many of their traditions and culture, they are both discriminated against in their own country, were seen as savages by past generations, and their history is not well covered in both countries’ education systems. My parents are Igorot and I learned early on that
our people were historically differentiated from the majority of Filipinos because of our strong and successful resistance to Spanish colonization. There is an obvious cultural divide between Igorots and the rest of the Philippines, which often leads to racial biases within the Filipino community. I asked my cousin, who immigrated to Canada in 2014, what her experiences were like growing up as an Igorot in the Philippines. This is what she shared. “There are many misconceptions and stereotypes about Igorot people. Some Filipinos think that we are dark and short, have curly hair, are poor, uneducated, and a primitive species of humans. When you introduce yourself in school, people are shocked when they
say you are an Igorot because you don’t look like what they imagine in their head. People think we still practice headhunting, and they are scared of us. Many think they are superior to Igorots; this is why we tend to be quieter and show fewer emotions. When we get high grades, they are surprised, so we don’t like to show off. People are uneducated about our culture because it is not taught well in schools. That is why they create and spread many insulting and hurtful assumptions.” It was shocking to learn these racial biases still exist within the Filipino community. Angelica McLeod shares her experience living on Shoal Lake 40. She would often feel ashamed to be Indigenous, especially when seeing people living on the streets and battling addictions. “So, when I came to the city here and I noticed that I always wished that I was born nonIndigenous so that I could have clean drinking water and I could have all these things that we don’t
Jayden Cadag have back home” (Ward). This is something as an Igorot I can relate to; we are often perceived as uncivilized and get stares when we are in our native costumes. This leads to some Igorots being reluctant to share with others about their culture or wishing they weren’t Igorot. I was complicit by not educating others about my culture and staying quiet. The article, “Home is at the Heart of the Indigenous Prison Crisis,” exposes how years of intergenerational trauma and complex disadvantages have led to the Indigenous prison crisis today (Beardy). As an Igorot, this saddens me because what if this happened to us in the Philippines? What if the Spanish successfully colonized us and tried to erase our culture just like the English and French did to Indigenous people in Canada? I truly sympathize and understand the complex issues facing Indigenous communities today. In the last article, “Black Lives Matter Toronto Calls for Police Defunding, Protesters Charged” (CBC News), protestors were arrested for defacing statues of racist figures in Canadian history. Supporters questioned why the police cared so much about these key architects in the creation of residential schools and not about the black and Indigenous lives being lost today. This exemplifies how Canadian history is still being taught from the mainstream, Eurocentric point of view, with much change still needed. In both countries, the history and culture of Igorots
and Indigenous peoples are not thoroughly covered. No statues are commemorating Indigenous or Igorot people in either country. By comparing the similar experiences between Igorots and Indigenous people in Canada, racial biases in both the Filipino community and Canada are being brought to light. For years I was complicit by the fact that I stayed silent when I heard Filipinos spread misconceptions about Igorot people because I felt scared to speak up. But now, I have grown into an individual who is proud of my culture and proud to be an Igorot. I will continue to educate others on my Igorot culture and share what I have learned about the Indigenous peoples of Canada. Decorating fixes for common feng shui problems There are few homes with perfect feng shui. Fortunately, rather than hanging a windchime or adding flutes to a beam, simple decorative changes can be made that will look and feel more natural. These decorative elements can help remedy difficulties such as poison arrows that come from a front door and back door alignment or odd windows and slanted walls. Here are important feng shui decorating fixes that you can use in your home that will look good and help your home’s feng shui. 1. Portiere curtains. Once a staple of the Victorian era, portiere curtains are curtains that can be drawn to close off a room or to create or delineate one area of the house from another. They’ve recently returned to decorating circles and are helpful for adding privacy in a house that feels too open. In feng shui, these are especially helpful when your front door and back door are in line with one another. Or maybe you have a window that you can see out of when you open your front door. By hanging a portiere curtain, you can stop the view and stop the rush of energy going out of your house and that can result in money going out of the house constantly and feeling drained and tired. This is a better way to stop energy from rushing through the house than hanging a crystal ball from the ceiling which can look odd, whereas the portiere curtain looks stylish. 2. Decorative screens. This is another way to stop rushing energy from the front door that lines up with a back door or window. Screens can be added to help create a corner in an open concept house. They can also be used to block a view, such as a view of the dining room from the front door. This can lead to an excess of bills and a low accumulation of assets. Screens are a wonderful fix

Vines can be used both indoors and outdoors, such as on those odd poles that show up in basements. 5. Canopy beds. Canopies whether attached to the bed or on the wall or ceiling offer wonderful feng shui. They are protective of the couple in the bed, and they are excellent focal points for the bedroom. But they’re also great fixes for beams on the ceiling, slanted ceilings, or coffered or tray ceilings. These ceilings can create poison arrows that aim at your body while sleeping. Slanted ceilings add pressure
to those who sleep under them, so creating a flat ceiling with a canopy curtain can help to relieve that pressure. The idea is to create a flat overhead surface to create a protective cover or to stop poison arrows from ceiling features. 6. Artwork with a view. Some homes have a wall that you see as soon as you enter. This can starve the house of energy by pushing energy back out the door. Over time, this can create a house that is starved for energy (i.e., health, money, opportunity). By adding art that offers a view of the distance and appears to view inwards, you can help to draw chi into the house by adding a view that goes further than the wall. This helps to bring energy to the house because energy flows where the eye goes. 7. Lighting. Lighting is one of the best forms of feng shui. It helps to lift and brighten and that’s always good feng shui because that’s yang energy. Lighting can help brighten dark corners, lift energy, and your gaze upward the way a chandelier makes you look up. A beautiful chandelier with crystals is an excellent remedy for a stairway that is too close to the front door to slow energy (and money) from running out the door too quickly. Crystal lighting is also excellent for calming energy in a kitchen when the stove and sink are opposite one another, which can cause arguments and disharmony in the household. 8. Curtains. Curtains are a wonderful way to fix many feng shui flaws. One common feng shui problem is when the command position in a bedroom is covered by a window where the bed should go. Because beds should be placed in the command position, but never against the window, it can mean that the bed will be placed in a less than optimal position for feeling in command and supported during sleep, a vital feng shui tenet. Adding a wall of curtains behind the bed can make the window disappear and provide
a solid-looking backdrop for the bed. In some homes, the bedroom may have two windows in a corner on only one side of the bed. This feels out of balance visually and that can impact a couple or whoever sleeps in the bedroom from feeling comfortable in bed, resting properly, and just not feeling in harmony with life. Adding another curtain on the side of the wall without a window can create a “faux” window that will help balance the visual look and feel of the bedroom. 9. Round shapes. One of the less common shapes in a home is round. Many homes are full of furnishings that are square or rectangular. Over time, this can create a stuck or stagnant feeling in your
home. You may feel like the room feels too heavy. By adding round shapes such as a round occasional table or a barrel-shaped chair, you can create more movement and add a lighter feeling that will lift the feeling of heaviness and help propel change in your home and life. OUR HEALTH Lifestyle changes may help lower risk of gout attacks Dear Mayo Clinic: Are there natural ways to prevent gout attacks or at least lessen the severity? I do not want to take medication if it’s not necessary. Answer: If you have been diagnosed with gout, you can make lifestyle changes that may help lower the risk of future gout attacks. Gout is a form of arthritis that happens when sharp particles, called urate crystals, build up in a joint, causing severe pain, tenderness and swelling. One joint commonly affected by gout is located at the base of the big toe. Urate crystals form when high levels of uric acid are present in the blood. Your body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines – substances found naturally in the body, as well as in certain foods. Uric acid usually dissolves in your blood and passes through your kidneys into your urine. But sometimes your body either produces too much uric acid or your kidneys flush out too little uric acid. When this happens, gout often results. One of the most helpful ways to prevent gout attacks is to maintain a healthy body weight. Research has shown that excess weight is a major risk factor
for developing gout. If you are overweight, losing weight can lower uric acid levels in your body and significantly reduce your risk of gout attacks. Regarding the type of diet you should follow, the traditional thinking was that reducing the amount of foods that contain purines could substantially decrease the risk of gout flares. However, managing a low-purine diet can be quite cumbersome, and the success of such a diet in lowering blood uric acid levels is actually quite low. Even if you strictly follow a low-purine diet, the decrease in your blood uric acid level is rarely enough to cure gout. Instead, a lower-calorie diet – one that replaces refined carbohydrates (sugar, white flour, others) with more complex carbohydrates, limits meat, and increases vegetables and fruit – often can be much more effective at reducing blood uric acid levels than a low-purine diet. Specifically, to lower your risk of gout, eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk products. Get your protein mainly from low-fat dairy products because they may protect against gout. Limit the meat, fish and poultry you eat to no more than four to six ounces
a day. Drink eight to 16 cups, or about two to four litres, of fluid daily, with at least half of that being water. In addition, avoid foods and beverages that have been shown to increase the risk of gout attacks, including those that are rich in fructose, such as fruit-flavored drinks, non-diet soda and many processed foods. Drinking alcohol, especially beer, is also a significant risk factor for gout. Studies have suggested that drinking two or more beers a day can double the risk of a gout attack. So, limit the amount of alcohol you drink, or avoid it completely. Although you mention a preference not to take medication, if you have other health problems, some medications taken for those conditions may also be useful in preventing gout. For example, some blood pressure medications have been shown to lower uric acid levels, and a variety of medications used to treat high cholesterol also have a beneficial effect on blood uric acid levels. If you have high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol and are managing them with medication, talk to your doctor about using a drug that could help prevent gout, as well. Finally, if lifestyle changes
