support

for Mera Peak challenge

Pillory Barn is pleased to be supporting Lee Henderson, an inspirational man, from Tunbridge Wells, in his quest to raise £50,000 for Motor Neurones Disease. After experiencing the personal tragedy of losing his Father to Motor Neurones Disease, Lee became motivated to fundraise for the cause to contribute to further researching the disease. In April 2008, he will be tackling one of the world’s most dangerous peaks, Mera Peak in Nepal. Support for their cause so far has included well wishes from Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Martin Corry – England Rugby player, Bear Grylls and Lloyd Scott – famous for running the London Marathon in a diving suit and walking across the bottom of Loch Ness! 2

We are donating public relations time to help Lee keep his story in the local papers. If you have any fundraising ideas, or feel that you can help Lee, please contact him on lee.henderson@4productions.co.uk Events

brachers marketing campaign

a great success

Brachers Solicitors of Maidstone has

unveiled their latest multi-media advertising campaign. Entitled ‘Talk, Listen, Listen, Talk’ the campaign originates from the idea that the art of both talking and listening to clients in equal measures is all but dead in the Legal profession, and is, Brachers believes, at the core of what makes a good solicitor. Pillory Barn and Marketing Manager for Brachers, Angela Witcher, have launched the campaign across web, radio, direct mail, press and outdoor advertising. The web campaign is bespoke to radio at www.talklisten.co.uk. A simple yet effective method of directing traffic to the correct website whilst getting around the spelling of ‘Brachers’ on air. Just the radio promotion alone, sent more than 2,400 enquiries to the website.

How long have you worked with Pillory Barn? Two years.

ticularly when it comes to handling a media issue.

What attracted you to them? I was given a word of mouth recommendation by a colleague who had already worked with Pillory Barn. My first meeting was with Miranda Chapman and our first event together was the Folkestone Santa Fun Run. Although there was an immediate rapport between the Pillory Barn and Channel Corridor Partnership teams, this was balanced by a very professional approach and a sense of humour – ‘must haves’ in the press and events world I’m sure!

What do you think could have made the relationship better? I think that I could have been clearer about my needs sometimes. Communication begins at home and I wish I’d thought about that more often. Fortunately Pillory Barn have been able to translate my intentions and make something fairly sensible out of them, which is no mean feat when you have to work with an organisation which is both public and private sector focused and everyone has to have an input.

What is the best thing they have done for you? The best thing is not a thing – it’s much more personal than that. I’ve appreciated Pillory Barn’s timely advice more than any one ‘thing’ – sometimes doing nothing is exactly the right strategy rather than doing something reactive and which may cause a negative impact, par-

were close to the kitchen area that couldn’t keep up with the demand for food. But we did – Pillory Barn had brought lots, and I mean lots, of finger food for the stall and between that and our goodie bags, containing small bottles of local wine. I think we were just about the most popular stand at the exhibition. I think we handed out 300 or 400 bags. We all ended up hoarse from talking that day.

“they understand me, how I tick and what my business needs are, so why would I go anywhere else!”

“this was balanced by a very professional approach and a sense of humour”

What is your funniest memory to date from working with them? April 2006, Kent 2020 Exhibition, in tents, on a slope. We were launching our Enterprise Development Fund and

How do you see them working with you in the future? On a personal note I am establishing my own business in the new year and have already decided that Pillory Barn will be my communications company as I go forward – they understand me, how I tick and what my business needs are, so why would I go anywhere else! Which other companies within the industry do you admire? See answer above!

good luck for town centre management

The newsletter called ‘Maidstone Town Mail’, designed by Pillory Barn, is being entered for the ‘centre initiative’ award. Pillory Barn would like to wish Bill Moss from the Maidstone Town Centre Management good luck for his entry into the Association of Town Centre Management Awards. To win, the entry has to demonstrate shared visions, strategies, action plans and marketing. Promotional campaigns and branding for a town centre are vital steps in ensuring its vitality and viability. The winner is announced in the New Year.

new joiner for the pillory barn family Pillory Barn’s family is growing at a fast pace and our newest edition is Oliver Hood who brings a digital arm to the agency. A freelance digital designer before joining us, Oliver has worked on projects for clients such as production companies in Pinewood Studios and more locally Kent Police and KCC. Originally a Midlands lad, he attributes himself with a ‘seemingly limitless memory for trivia’ and gets frustrated by designers who use pretentious jargon. He admires Apple, due to their come back in the past ten years. The strangest client request that he’s had to deal with is a guy who asked him to design ‘calling cards’ to hand out to women who caught his eye! We would like to welcome Oliver to the team and look forward to offering our clients more services with his talent.

a kentish christmas We aren’t the type of agency to do the ‘luvvy’ stuff when it comes to marketing and PR, but when Christmas is around the corner, we do love a party and so do our clients! So, this year, we’ve gone all Kentish and decided to hold our parties in two of Kent’s most picturesque settings. One of the hottest new spots that everyone is talking about is Elvey Farm in Pluckley (owned by Jeff Moody, Meridian presenter.) Built originally in 1406, Elvey Farm was launched this year and has been refurbished to

offer accommodation, dining and weddings. Using the best of Kentish food, we are looking forward to holding our Christmas networking event whilst enjoying Christmas lunch in such a lovely spot. Leeds Castle is a firm favourite with the staff at Pillory Barn, so we are all donning our skates (well some of us) to try out Leeds Castle’s new ice skating rink and gatehouse for our own party. The hardest thing will be to debate whether to have the mulled wine before or after the ice skating!

knowing me, knowing you Employee focus of the month, Erica Banes, Studio Manager

How long have you worked at Pillory Barn? Three years, I am one of the originals from when Pillory Barn went full service! Where have you worked before here? Kent Messenger as Creative Typesetter, ELD Media as Studio Assistant/Graphic Designer, designed advertising cards and magazines and ran the studio when the manager wasn’t there. What has been your highlight of the past year and what do you hope to achieve in 2008? These include every piece of work I have personally designed that clients have been really pleased with. I’m happy when the client is happy. What particular talents/hobbies do you have? Creativity! I also used to have a PPL (Private Pilots Licence) and on top of this I had four hours of aerobatics flight training and had conquered the english channel with a few trips to France. I also planeshared a beautiful Jodel once I had passed the gruelling flight test (first

time!! ...unlike my driving test!) and endless written examinations. I was the youngest female to fly solo in England. Why did I not continue this as a career you ask... well two days after the application to flight school had gone out September 11th happened, which meant I could not get in anywhere. In a way design was second choice but I wouldn’t change that now.

“I was the youngest female to fly solo in England.“

What other companies/brands do you admire? The one that instantly springs to mind is M&S. Everything in their re-launch seems to work in my eyes - a very good example of a come back. What has been your most cringemaking moment? First day back after the Christmas Party last year. The stories have lasted all the way up until this Christmas! To give an insight; whistling balloons, vodka ice bars,

“...whistling balloons, vodka ice bars, dancing, more vodka, more dancing and stolen clementines. I have a lot to match up to this year!”

dancing, more vodka, more dancing and stolen clementines. I have a lot to match up to this year! Funniest moment/experienced or witnessed at work? Difficult one as there are so many to choose from! One thing would be the time that our Director, Miranda Chapman, did the dance which Ricky Gervais, star of The Office did. You all know it and many of you will know Miranda..... not the most likely person to do that in the middle of the office and sober! Favourite thing about working at Pillory Barn? The people I work with, and this includes our clients. I feel that our work is all about team work and it takes more than one person to really build a design/concept that works.

You could hear an audible groan in the office amongst the PR Managers when Lynne Franks entered ITV’s ‘I’m a celebrity, get me out of here!’ The fact that public relations is a complex and often misunderstood service, plagued by a mis-conception of long lunches and expensive glamour at the clients expense is going to be injured further now that Lynne Franks ‘PR Guru’ is on our screens every week night. Just to put everyone’s mind at rest, we don’t do chanting, strange dancing or delegate without getting our hands dirty! Damage limitation campaign anyone?
