SPOTLIGHT

Ms. Thelma Best

Submitted by: Hope Lomax-Jones, FM-Senior Division and Carmelita Coleman, OVSC Supervisor

Ms. Thelma Best, pictured on the left at last year’s Senior Olympics.

M

s. Thelma Best was born in Norfolk Virginia on Cumberland Street. She graduated with honors from Booker T. Washington High School in 1948 and went on to attend business school. She tried to get a job in Norfolk but they were not hiring people of her color for office work. Housekeeping, childcare and cleaning were the only types of jobs she was offered. So, she traveled

to New York City to find work. While traveling, she got on the wrong bus, got off and stopped in a business to use the restroom. When she came out, she asked the receptionist if the business was hiring. That company, MetLife, hired her and she remained a loyal employee for 17 years. She was nicknamed “the restroom girl” because she went in to use the restroom and came out with a job! When she returned to Virginia in 1988, she began going to the local recreation center where she met Miss Jean Saunders, a Norfolk Recreation, Parks & Open Space employee and she started attending the Norfolk Senior Olympics. Ms. Best still has every ribbon, medal and certificate that she has received, each noted with a description of when it was received. Ms. Best stated that when she first participated in the NSO, there were only a few African Americans participating. Now she looks forward to participating in the “walk” during Track & Field day, table games and just socializing with the many friends and staff that attend. In addition to being active with Norfolk Senior Olympics, Ms. Best is very active and walks for the Sickle Cell Anemia Walk where 3 years ago they named her the Mother of the Sickle Cell Walk. Ms. Best attributes her active lifestyle to eating good nutritious meals and comfortable shoes. She states that she was an active child so the Norfolk Senior Olympics makes her feel like a kid again. To us “Ms. Best” is timeless and is someone that everyone at the Norfolk Senior Olympics and surrounding Norfolk Community can be proud of, states Hope Lomax-Jones, RPOS FM-Senior Division & NSO Co-Chair. ■

Senior Travel continued from page 10

“You can sit on your private balcony in the morning or evening in your pajamas,” she said. When it comes to traveling on a cruise or out of the country, Bowen strongly recommends travel insurance. “When you are no longer in the United States and you have a medical need, Medicare does not cover you,” she said. Telephone assistance is available for medical transportation, replacing prescriptions in an emergency and helping with language barriers. Travel insurance can also cover lost passports. Even for group travel within the United States, Bowen said it is a good idea. For instance, if illness prevents travel, travel insurance will cover a non-refundable trip. It also covers lost,

damaged or stolen luggage. When flying, Bowen said it is important to carry all medications in their prescription bottle, in carry-on luggage. “Do not carry medication in the daily dose boxes. If you need one of those, take it empty and fill when you get to your destination,” she said. Make arrangements in advance for mobile ground transportation within the airport when disembarking the airplane and changing airplanes if mobility is a problem. Travelers over 75 years old do not have to remove their shoes when going through security, she added. While there is much to consider when leaving home, Bowen said experiencing different cultures and places makes travel worth it. ■

Making Your Golden Years Truly Golden By: Scott Kee

I

All these factors make this a great time for seniors to get a job. So, where do you start?

The US economy is rebounding and new jobs are being created every day. According to The President, at his 2018 State of the Union Address, there were 2.4 million jobs created in the US last year alone. At the same time, many older workers are retiring; opening up even more jobs.

First, you will need to define your employment goals and put them into an employment goals statement. The goals statement is for your eyes only, and will help you frame your job search and identify the aspects of employment that are important to you. It will also help you identify which job listings you want to either pursue or ignore.

f you have entered your “golden years” and are hoping to get back into the job market, there isn’t a better time than right now to jump in!

The unemployment rate is rapidly approaching “full employment”, which labor officials put at around 3.5%. This will cause employers to seek out the currently unemployed, or underemployed workers, willing to go to work. They will be seeking employees who are reliable, capable, experienced and trustworthy.

As you develop your goals statement, be sure and include other aspects such as travel, learning new skills, relocation to a new town, or other unique factors pertaining to your ideal job.

■ Purchase a nice interview outfit…………be sure it’s current and fairly conservative. A nice new outfit will make you feel confident and show employers that you are a serious candidate

Next………..Develop a strategy. Lay out a timeline that will guide you along the path to employment. This timeline should include events and activities that will prepare you for employment. At the beginning of the timeline, put today’s date and at the end of the timeline, put the date at which you will be ready to go to work.

■ Develop and practice your interviewing skills……….. find a friend, family member or coach that can assist you and provide constructive feedback

Some items to put on your timeline could include: ■ Energizing your network……..inform everyone you know that you are going back to work and what type of work you are seeking ■ Training…………..take some refresher training and update your basic computer and office technology skills ■ Putting together a resume………..update an existing one or build a new and fresh resume

■ Start applying for jobs………….since over 80% of job-seekers find a job through someone they know, leveraging your network is of vital importance So………..get organized and get out there, and rejoin the workforce. Your experience and qualifications will make you a choice candidate for employment, and will certainly make your golden years even more golden! ■

What is Medicare

Many individuals have questions about Medicare. What is it and how can it work for me? Here is an overview to help you better understand the program.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for:

• People age 65 or older; • People with certain disabilities; or • People with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant.)

MEDICARE PART A Hospital Insurance

MEDICARE PART B Medical Insurance

Helps cover inpatient care in a hospital or skilled nursing facility (following a hospital stay), home health care services, and hospice care services. Copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles may apply for each service. You usually do not pay a monthly premium for Part A coverage if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.

Helps cover doctors’ services, outpatient care, home health services, and other medical services. Part B also covers some preventive services. Copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles may apply for each service. You can find out if you have Part B by looking at your Medicare card. You pay the Part B premium each month. Part A and Part B are often referred to as “Original Medicare”.

Includes Part A, Part B, and, usually, other coverage like prescription drugs. Medicare Advantage Plans may offer extra coverage, such as vision, hearing, dental, and/or health and wellness programs. In addition to your Part B premium, you usually pay one monthly premium for the services provided.

MEDICARE PART D Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage A prescription drug option run by private companies approved by and under contract with Medicare. Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs, may help lower your prescription drug costs and help protect against higher costs in the future. Part D is available to everyone with Medicare.

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

Hospice vs. Palliative Care

How they are the same Hospice and palliative care both offer compassionate care to patients with life limiting illnesses. But palliative care – which is always a component of hospice care – can be used as a separate area of medical practice while the patient is receiving treatment. Hospice care includes palliative care and addresses the patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs as well. Hospice can help with such daily activities as administering medications, bathing, and dressing, but hospice does not provide full time caregivers. Hospice requires that a willing, able and available caregiver be in the home, unless alternate arrangements are made.

Palliative care is also focused on relieving symptoms associated with the patient’s condition while receiving active treatment. When they are used Hospice care is reserved for terminally ill patients when treatment is no longer curative during the last 6 months of life, assuming the disease takes its normal course.

services in full or with minimal co-pays. Center for Hospice Care is committed to providing hospice and palliative care to anyone in the community who needs it and meets the qualifications, even if they are un-insured, under-insured or unable to pay. Palliative care is paid for by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurances if the patient meets criteria.

Palliative care can be employed while the patient is continuing active treatment through different phases of their life limiting condition. Emotional care Hospice care and Palliative Care treat the whole patient and the family, offering psychosocial and spiritual counseling. Payment methods Hospice care is paid for in full by the Medicare Hospice Benefit and by Medicaid Hospice Benefit. Most insurances and the Veterans Administration also cover hospice

Where care is received Hospice care is most often provided in a patient’s home setting – regardless of whether it’s a house, apartment, nursing home, assisted living facility or other setting. Some hospices offer inpatient services in hospitals, hospice facilities, skilled nursing facilities, or assisted living facilities. Palliative care is most often received in the home, apartment, or during a short-term hospital admission. ■

Seniors And Dental Issues By: Susan Smigielski Acker

A

s people age, their health changes including their dental health, but with proper care, their teeth will remain intact.

“Saliva regularly bathes teeth which helps keep plaque off the teeth. The less plaque the less likely cavities will occur,” he said.

It is a misconception that old age means people will lose their teeth, said Dr. Michael Link, a dentist with Link, Jacobs and Link, DDS PC in Newport News.

This can happen to patients, who up until their senior years, had little dental problems.

“If people have healthy habits then they can prevent dental problems. That is key,” he said. It is important to regularly visit a dentist not just for teeth and gum health but also to detect signs of diseases, such as oral cancer and diabetes. Many times, these diseases are first spotted by a dentist. Link noted that in many cases, the disease itself may not be diagnosed but the dentist can detect something is wrong and refer the patient to their physician. Medications taken by older patients are a challenge for dentists because some can cause dry mouth. Allergy, high blood pressure and chronic pain medications can cause dry mouth. This, more than just an uncomfortable problem, can cause tooth decay.

“Patients will start taking these medications and all of a sudden they have cavities,” Link said. Diabetes and periodontal disease are related. Patients with untreated or unstable periodontal disease have chronic inflammation. This raises blood sugar levels and weaken the immune system. This makes patients at risk of getting diabetes or makes it hard to control existing diabetes, according to information provided by Ginger Thompson, communications director for AARP Virginia. If dry mouth is a problem, then the dentist can prescribe medication such as Biotene, Link said. Joint replacement is becoming more common in senior citizens. Link said many orthopedic doctors prescribe their patients antibiotics to take one hour before a dental procedure. Antibiotics may also be prescribed for heart valve replacement patients. “Overall, the decision to prescribe antibiotics to be taken before a dental procedure may be what is best for you,” he said. - continued page 8

Nutrition plays a role. People who consume sweets, including soft drinks and juice, are more likely to get cavities, Link said. He recommended patients should brush their teeth soon after consuming sweets. “You have just 10 minutes to brush before the acid (from sweets) affects the teeth,” he said. Overall, eating healthy foods is a benefit because it decreases medical cost and you feel good, Link said.

The average cost of preventative care, such as regular cleanings, is between $300 to $500. However, this is much less expensive than what dental neglect costs. “For example, a tooth that has been removed and needs an implant, can cost between $3,000 to $5,000,” Link said. “And dental neglect is very painful,” he added. ■

Fluoride rinses help with prevention. “Many people think fluoride is just for kids, it is not. Seniors can benefit from it too,” he said. Prevention is important in paying for dental care. Because Medicare does not cover dental care, patients must either pay themselves or carry dental insurance. Thompson provided results of a poll conducted of AARP members that showed 69 percent of people who put off having needed dental care did so due to cost.

Supplemental Income for Wartime Veterans VA helps Veterans and their families cope with financial challenges by providing supplemental income through the Veterans Pension benefit. Veterans Pension is a tax-free monetary benefit payable to low-income wartime Veterans.

Your yearly family income must be less than the amount set by Congress to qualify for the Veterans Pension benefit. Learn more about income and net worth limitation, and see an example of how VA calculates the VA Pension benefit at www.benefits. va.gov/PENSION/pencalc.asp.

Eligibility Generally, a Veteran must have at least 90 days of active duty service, with at least one day during a wartime period to qualify for a VA Pension. If you entered active duty after September 7, 1980, generally you must have served at least 24 months or the full period for which you were called or ordered to active duty (with some exceptions), with at least one day during a wartime period.

Additional Pension Allowances Veterans or surviving spouses who are eligible for VA pension and are housebound or require the aid and attendance of another person may be eligible for an additional monetary payment.

In addition to meeting minimum service requirements, the Veteran must be: • • • • •

How To Apply You can apply for Veterans Pension online at www.ebenefits. va.gov or download and complete VA Form 21P-527EZ, “Application for Pension”. You can mail your application to the Pension Management Center (PMC) that serves your state. You may also visit your local regional benefit office and turn in your application for processing. You can locate your local regional benefit office using the VA Facility Locator. raveling is a dream for many older adults especially during retirement. Exploring the country and the world has many different options for senior citizens. Connie Bowen, senior travel agent with AAA Tidewater in Virginia Beach, said when older travelers start to plan their travel, the first consideration should be their physical mobility. “I had a man come in with a walker saying he wanted to go to a beach. But I could not see him trying to maneuver that walker on a beach. After talking with him and his wife, they decided on Disney World because they do so much to accommodate those with mobility problems especially if they are staying on site. There are many forms of complimentary transportation. They went and had a ball,” she said. Many senior travelers prefer group tours because an escort conducts the trip with a certain amount of structure, Bowen said. Everything is arranged. From the entertainment to the meals, she added. Group travel offers motor coach transportation which eliminates the burden of driving, she said. “They can park their cars locally and then get on the bus to the

destination,” Bowen said. Popular motor coach trips that local seniors frequent include Lancaster, Pa., in December for a trip titled An Amish Holiday which includes a play. The Christmas in New York trip is popular as well. Bowen said senior citizens like it because much is arranged including a Broadway play and seeing the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. However, it is not overly planned. Free time is set aside for shopping, independent site seeing and relaxing, Bowen said. A cruise is another way to travel that includes many amenities, said the 28-year travel agent. While a cruise will not depart Norfolk until May 2019, Bowen said cruises offer many advantages including gourmet dining, activities, shows and plenty of places to relax.

“And you go to bed and wake up in a different port to explore ,” she said. There are different levels of cabins from an inside cabin to an ocean side, which Bowen prefers. - continued page 12
