Narrow the topic: Certain topics are broad and wide, and may encompass several ideas. Of the many ideas, some may not be relevant or important to the topic in context. It is thus important for the student to narrow down to specific areas of the topic that are of help to his research paper.

Gather information focusing on the specific research question: Crystallize a genuine research question on your area of interest and then put your facts right to answer this question.

Find references and select bibliography : References are materials that will assist you in writing the paper. Good sources of these materials are college libraries or any other good library that contain valuable reference materials. It is important not to wait until the last time as you need time to be acquainted with the as many relevant materials as possible.

Gather and categorize notes : Write short notes from your reference materials using your own words. This will help you understand the topic better and at the same time, you will be putting the information in a format that will be used in writing your paper. It is good to remember that the best way of taking notes id to skim the topic first and then writing concise but sufficient detailed comments. Categorize your notes based on the approach you are taking or as per the paper format. Separate the major points from the subordinate one.

Prepare a detailed outline : A good outline helps you acquire a prerequisite of all good writing. In this case, you will have time to think through your materials, thus digesting your random facts. Additionally, a detailed outline saves your time during revision, as all your facts will be the same from the start to the end.

Write up the paper in the correct format: This step is as important as any other step in writing a good research paper. Start by writing the first draft. Write it as rapidly and spontaneous as possible, recording what goes through your mind. After the first draft, write a clear copy where you add, delete, and rectify what you had written in the first draft. When this is over, go for a break and ponder what you have written. At this point, meditate of any important point that you need to add. Make sure they are in line with your research question.

Proofread and edit where necessary: Once the paper is correct, go through it again rectifying omissions and errors that you may find. It is advisable to proofread your work two or three times. Where possible, pass the paper to a third party as you may overlook some minor errors when you do it yourself.

Check quotations, footnotes, and bibliography : Lastly, generate your reference list and confirm whether it is in the correct format.
