“Changeling X” DVD-Restoration and 4K-Upscale

The approach of this project is basically to extract the source elements from the DVDs, then do a “clean-up” of the material (which involves software-based deinterlacing and filtering designed to improve the visual quality as much as possible), then adjust the video stream to achieve a (mostly) stable 23,976 FPS followed by a multiple-instance AI-based upscale to 4K resolution at the original 4:3 aspect ratio (cropped left and right to avoid black bars). The audio tracks include both English and German audio at AC3 5.1 encoding – since this project works off the PAL DVDs both tracks have been pitch adjusted (or slowed down) to adjust for the PAL-speedup to 25 FPS (pitch shift, so voices sound higher in the European version), so it will perfectly sync up with the new 23,976 FPS video and sound right.

B5 was originally shot in widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 on 35mm film and then cropped to accommodate the 4:3 broadcast standard. The production minds behind B5 were careful about the so-called “clean shooting” – meaning that set equipment, behind the camera people, lighting stands and such were positioned outside the traditional 4:3 framing, allowing for later widescreen distribution. Therefore, the B5 live action shots could be delivered in widescreen, 16:9, or whatever future standard might come along. So, everything worked well in that area. The source materials for this project are the European PAL DVDs (Region 2) of Babylon 5 as well as the HD-Transfers/Remasters from HBO Max/Amazon.
