The events of December 7, 1941, changed this country forever. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor lasted just two hours - all the time we needed to wake up from our collective innocence. I envisioned PEARL HARBOR as a tribute to this country and its people. In order for this film to honor our heroes properly, everything had to be perfect: the details had to feel correct, the story had to feel true. That said, my mission with PEARL HARBOR was not to outline a history lesson, rather, it was to capture a pivotal moment in history from a realistic, gripping perspective, to get inside the minds of the people of that era. What you hold in your hands is designed to look like a soldier’s war journal, what our troops would actually carry into battle to remind themselves of their homes, their families and what they were fighting for. To satisfy the taste of cineastes and history buffs alike, our package documents an important moment in this country’s growth, and illustrates how I and my amazing crew of over 2000 were able to bring a world to file. The goal of any filmmaker is to produce a work that will have lasting value through generations. But PEARL HARBOR is a special case – I hope that when all the survivors are gone, this film will be a worthy tribute to their memories, to properly capture the inhuman violence, the devastation, the sheer visceral terror that they experienced on that fateful Sunday morning and the exceptional bravery and resilience they showed in the months to follow - Michael Bay
