Pine County is heading for its second special election of 2019 in March. A special election will be held on Tuesday, March 19 to fill the state house of representatives seat for Minnesota’s District 11B, which covers Pine County and half of Kanabec County. That seat became vacant after Representative Jason Rarick resigned from the position effective Feb. 12 to be sworn in as state senator from District 11. Governor Tim Walz issued a writ ordering the special election on Feb. 14, calling it, “... necessary to fill this vacancy to ensure representation for the citizens of District 11B,” Walz wrote. The filing period for District 11B candidates ran from Friday, Feb. 15 until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19. Candidates for state representative were able to file for this office with the auditor of Kanabec or Pine counties, or at the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State in St. Paul, and were required to pay $100 to file. The withdrawal period
ended at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20. If needed, a special primary will be held on Tuesday, March. 5 for the major party candidates. As they file, candidates will be listed on the Minnesota Secretary of State website at: https://bit. ly/2X5Ljht The most recent list of candidates includes: • Joe Wolf, Republican – Pine County • Traci LeBrun, Republican – Pine County • Nathan Nelson, Republican – Pine County • Tim Burkhardt, DFL – Pine County • Carl Pederson, Republican – Pine County • Ayrlahn Johnson, Republican – Kanabec County • Michael Cummins, Republican – Pine County Rarick had been a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives since 2014, and won the state senator seat after a special election on Feb. 5. A Republican caucus was scheduled for Monday, Feb. 18 at the Mora library, while the DFL caucus was scheduled for Monday, Feb. 18 at the Hinckley community center.
Man charged with Henriette Road burglaries STAFF REPORT NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM
On Jan. 16, a Pine County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a report of a burglary at a residence on Henriette Road in Pine County. The property owners said they had last been at the property three days earlier, and when they returned on Jan. 16 they discovered the burglary. The deputy saw that the property had been broken into with the clasp for the locks pried off the frame, a window broken and a piece of siding torn off. The
damage was estimated to exceed $1,000 for repair and replacement. The inside of the trailer house had been ransacked and numerous items were missing, including firearms, tools and other items. Law enforcement discovered that two of the stolen firearms had been pawned at a Cambridge shop on Jan. 14 by a woman. A record check showed that this same woman had pawned approximately 100 firearms over the past several months. Records also showed that the woman pawned a television set from another burglary approximately a half mile from the Henriette Road burglary. Another

man also pawned items from that burglary and is seen in a surveillance video pawning stolen items while the woman stands behind him with other items waiting to be pawned. On Jan. 31, a deputy was on patrol on Henriette Road and spotted a Crown Victoria that failed to signal a turn or come to a complete stop before turning eastbound. He activated his emergency lights, but the vehicle did not come to a stop until it turned into the McDonald’s parking lot and stopped across two SEE BURGLARIES, PAGE 13

Mora resident Ayrlahn Johnson entered the House District 11B race for the March 19th Special Election as a conservative Republican. Johnson is the only Kanabec County resident to have entered the race; all other candidates reside in Pine County. Johnson proclaimed he is running to shift the focus away from the political class in St. Paul and back to the “Heart of Minnesota.” In a press release, Johnson described that he and his wife Teresa have five wonderful children who have blessed them with five beautiful grandchildren. After a life in sales and data, he decided to substitute teach in Mora and Pine City. Johnson said he cares deeply about the future we are leaving our children, which is why he is involved in politics. On top of his role as a grandpa and substitute teacher, Johnson has also coached youth football and hockey. “We keep seeing government grow in St. Paul and benefiting the political class,” Johnson stated. “Meanwhile, our children are leaving our cities and state for better opportunities. It’s time we shift the focus away from big bloated government and back to restoring the Heart of Minnesota.”
Tim Burkhardt, current Hinckley City Councilor and former Executive Director of the Seven County Senior Federation, has decided to run for state representative in the upcoming House District 11B special election. A resident of Pine County for over 40 years, Burkhardt has publicly served in a number of board roles on a volunteer basis. Among those boards, he sees his time as the Vice President of the Minnesota Association of Small Cities as one of his biggest assets in identifying problems in our area and finding solutions to those problems. As a candidate, Burkhardt has vowed to focus on what he calls bread-and-butter issues. “Too often our representatives in St. Paul speak with passion on issues but don’t end up finding solutions to the problems we face in Greater Minnesota. I’ve actually worked on policy affecting small cities and rural areas for years because I’ve seen leaders let our region fall by the wayside. “Our citizens deserve someone who’s experienced and has fought against rising healthcare prices, someone who has the knowledge to bring jobs back to Pine and Kanabec Counties, and someone who focuses on getting things done instead of partisan bickering. You can trust me to do what’s right for our area - not for political parties or special interests.” If elected, Burkhardt said he would focus on controlling the skyrocketing cost of healthcare and prescription drugs, protecting coverage for pre-existing conditions, fighting for much needed rural broadband funding, and making sure schools in Greater Minnesota are funded equally to those in the metro and suburbs. “It’s time to send a voice of common sense to fight for us at the Capitol. I hope to earn your trust and be your voice in St. Paul.”

Local group wins statewide award by helping kids prepare for careers PRESS RELEASE
Local economic development group GPS::45::93 has won Program of the Year for its Innovative Approaches to Career Readiness initiative from the Economic Development Association of Minnesota. The Innovative Approaches program seeks to build connections between K-12 education and businesses to better prepare East Central Minnesota students for careers in the 21st century workforce. “We all know that our
kids are our future,” said North Branch Community Development Director and GPS’s Workforce Committee Chair Carla Vita. “In the past, economic developers spent our time solely on attracting businesses and redevelopment, but not on our kids and the school districts within our communities. With Innovative Approaches to Career Readiness, educators, employers, and economic developers work together to develop a plan to improve the opportunities for our future—our kids. We are
overjoyed with the new relationships that our program has achieved and will achieve.” Innovative Approaches to Career Readiness launched with an educational event on May 4 that brought over 80 regional leaders in education, business, and economic development together. Representatives from the Hutchinson and Eleva-Strum School Districts presented on the manufacturing programs they have developed within their schools to prepare students for their future careers. In
October, GPS organized a tour of Eleva-Strum’s Cardinal Manufacturing for interested stakeholders in East Central Minnesota. As it heads into its second year, the Innovative Approaches program continues to explore new ways to advance its mission. GPS’s workforce committee is planning a second event for this coming May and will conduct an outcome evaluation survey of area school districts. GPS also plans to further engage area school districts to explore methods of
developing creative new programming that meets each schools’ own path of innovation, budgets, student interests, and East Central Minnesota’s current and future workforce needs. As evidenced by the simultaneous development of several regional scholarship funds for community college education, East Central Minnesota has become a leader in the development of collaborations between business and education to advance a common future for the region. The Innovative Ap-
proaches to Career Readiness program relies on the support of the Initiative Foundation and the efforts of GPS’s Workforce Committee, plus additional support from area school district, the East Central Regional Development Commission and City of North Branch. For more information on the program, contact GPS Workforce Committee Chair Carla Vita (651-674-8113; carlav@ci.north-branch. mn.us) or GPS President Heidi Steinmetz (320-2095031; heidi.steinmetz@ kanabec.com.mn.us).

Déjà vu all over again Is anyone else getting a feeling that we were in the same spot we are now just about a month ago? It was just a few weeks after the end of the 2018 election cycle that we received word that there would be a special election for state senator in District 11 – an area which includes Pine City. So away we went on that ride through January, up until the election on Feb. 5. The winner of that race, Jason Rarick, was the state representative for District 11B. And because he resigned the state rep seat to the state senate seat, guess Editor’s take what? Another special election, this Soapbox one coming up on Tuesday, March Mike 19.
Gainor
ELECTION POLICY Now, the next few paragraphs outlining our election policy will likely sound very familiar, because we said it all just a couple of weeks ago. But elections are run by us fallible human beings, and human nature being what it is, it can’t hurt to say it all again. The Pioneer, as a rule, does not endorse candidates. However, we will run political letters to the editor. This is a guide to the weeks ahead. • The last publication date for letters criticizing candidates will be the week of Feb. 28 – next week’s issue. The last publication date for letters of support for candidates will be the week of March 7. No election letters will be printed in the newspaper published the week of March 14. • Letters to the editor are limited to 500 words, letters from the same writer will not be published more frequently than once every four issues, and letters by campaign managers or the candidates themselves will not be accepted. • Letters about election-related issues and candidates are, as always, subject to editing for libel. Statements of fact which cannot be confirmed by Pioneer staff may be removed, or the writer asked for proof of their accuracy. • All letters are subject to editing, and the Pioneer reserves the right to print or not to print any letter.
THIRD SPECIAL ELECTION? One of the candidates in the running is the mayor of Pine City. So, if he wins this state representative seat and resigns as mayor, the question is ... would we have a third special election in Pine City to elect a new mayor for the remaining 21 months of the mayor’s 24 month term? The answer to that question is ... maybe. Here’s the law on the matter (Minnesota Election Law, 412.02, Subdivision 2a.)
“If the vacancy occurs before the first day to file affidavits of candidacy for the next regular city election and more than two years remain in the unexpired term, a special election shall be held at or before the next regular city election and the appointed person shall serve until the qualification of a successor elected at a special election to fill the unexpired portion of the term. If the vacancy occurs on or after the first day to file affidavits of candidacy for the regular city election or when less
than two years remain in the unexpired term, there need not be a special election to fill the vacancy and the appointed person shall serve until the qualification of a successor. The council must specify by ordinance under what circumstances it will hold a special election to fill a vacancy other than a special election held at the same time as the regular city election” The mayor’s term is only two years (as opposed to a regular city council seat, which is four years). Therefore, even though he just started a new term, we are under that two-year threshold, and the council could choose to appoint a new mayor rather than call a special election. But should they appoint, or should they call for a special election after all? This is only a theoretical situation at this point, but if it becomes reality, my feeling is that the council ought to let the people of Pine City decide who their mayor should be, and call for an election. There are some good arguments against my position. First, an election is expensive and the city could save money by not holding an election. Second, it would be a distraction from the business of the city for the council to put together this new special election. If there were just a year or so left in the mayor’s term, I’d probably agree. But whoever is named mayor would serve just a few months shy of a full twoyear term. Sure, it would be legal to appoint someone to serve for that period – but it doesn’t feel right to me. I’d also say that overall a special election would be less of a distraction for the council than an appointment. If the council appoints, they would have to come up with a process for doing so, take applications, review those applications, do interviews and so on. It’s simpler just to elect. Finally, I think the current city council has done a good job at being open about their process and trying to keep the public informed and involved. Electing a new mayor would add to that legacy of openness. Appointing would not. Of course, we’ve got to get through this current special election first, and anything could happen there. Let’s hope for a good conversation in the weeks ahead.

‘If you don’t want a man unhappy politically, don’t give him two sides to a question to worry him; give him one. Better yet, give him none. Let him forget there is such a thing as war. If the government is inefficient, top-heavy, and tax-mad, better it be all those than that people worry over it... Then they’ll feel they’re thinking, they’ll get a sense of motion without moving. Uncle Jens and the silver skates BY BARBARA CHRISTENSEN
I was nine years old when I first met Uncle Jens. He had driven from North Dakota to celebrate Christmas in Minnesota. Before Christmas, Uncle Jens took me to Marvin Hinze’s Gambles Hardware Store in Pine City. We looked at the used skates lined up on a shelf from small to large sizes, white figure skates and brown hockey skates. A pair of figure skates with shiny silver blades fit my feet perfectly. Uncle Jens bought them for me. Just like Hans Brinker, I had my silver skates. I skated and skated on the little creek north of our house and at the big skating rink in town. I walked with my siblings and other kids in our neighborhood to the town rink many nights of the week. We dressed warm and didn’t let the below-zero temperatures stop our skating fun. Lots of other kids did the same. The Pine City Skating Rink was located where the fire department building now stands. It had two doors – one for in and one for out. You didn’t want to be standing by the in door when a fast skater came flying in and slammed the door against the wall with a loud bang. Wooden benches and foot boards lined each wall. Windows overlooked the lighted rink. Our skates would clomp-clomp-clomp across
the splintered wooden floor. A pop machine with glass bottles of Coke and 7-Up were tempting but we rarely had money for such purchases. Tom Franz was the rink custodian. He fired up the wood stove in the warming house until everyone was toasty. He seemed to like us kids and to my knowledge, had few, if any problems. Once in awhile several skaters would join hands in a line and play Crack the Whip, skating faster and faster before sharply turning a corner. The person at the end of the line had to hang on tightly or they would go flying as the whip cracked. If Tom saw us, he would be out in a flash to put a stop to our game before someone got hurt. Another game we played was Pump, Pump, Pull Away. Besides playing games, we raced. Tom would line us up at a starting line and shout, “Ready! Set! Go!” Off I would go, soaring around the outside of the rink, my shiny silver blades going zing-zing-zing over the ice. The cold and wind on my face and the feeling of flying over the ice was exhilarating. Newly frozen ice, smooth as a mirror, was the best. Uncle Jens never got to see me skate. He died soon after his sixty-fifth birthday, his first social security check still on his kitchen table. He probably never knew how much joy he brought to a young girl with his Christmas gift of the silver skates.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Snow, snow, snow To the Editor: Just a few weeks ago we were wondering if we were going to have a white Christmas. I think we have to be careful what we wish for. I know the snow removal people are happy. After a few bad years, their equipment has been given a good work-out. But there is almost no place to pile it by our driveways. Now I hear people saying “Is it ever going to stop?” I have too. In a few months summer will be here. I hope. Dale Kuzel Pine City

In an exciting inaugural game, freshman Rachel Sparling scored the first Dragon basket in the new gym built onto the Pine City Elementary School. The new facilities broke ground this summer and were ready for the girls basketball “C” squad game on Thursday against Braham. Players on the Pine City “C” squad were very happy and excited to get to be the first to play in the new gym and were even happier to break in the gym with a 30-22 win over rival Braham. For many kids, school is a pretty good place to be. But for children who move around a lot, it can be difficult to develop feelings of security and stability that school provides. The problem – which can be referred to as “school hopping” – poses issues for students and staff at Pine City schools. Kris Althoff, a Title 1 teacher at the elementary, is on the front lines of assessing and placing students when they first land in Pine City. “Besides knowing that a new student has arrived, we want to be
able to fit them in and decide what’s best for them at this time,”Althoff said. In reality, schools are the best place for the students to be throughout moving and other turmoil. “It’s stable, it’s supportive, it’s encouraging and it’s loving,” Althoff said. Pine City Dragon Speech was off to a roaring start last Saturday at their first competitive meet in Ogilvie. Pine City registered 22 entries within the 13 categories and held its own against several larger schools. Five of the 22 entries took home awards for placing in the top six in their category.

One of the men stopped and laid down, the other continued to run and Martinco felled him with a bullet. Sheriff Martinco pointed out that this is an outstanding example of what might happen, should guns be taken away from the private citizens, leaving them helpless to defend their property. He said that stronger means must have been used by both the individual and the law enforcement officials in order to curb these “incessant burglaries.”

The people of this country have no idea by what difficulties and oftentimes dangers the postal service is carried on. Residents of cities are always more or less impatient when letters are a little over due, says the superintendent of the railway mail service. The people do not generally know it, but it is a fact that the great majority of our post offices are served not by steam cars but by stage coaches, horse cars and even by foot – men who penetrate the mountains and valleys, the hills and dales where it is impossible to urge a horse with safety.

MN School Assn. honors board for efforts PINE CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Minnesota School Boards Association has set Feb. 18-22 as School Board Recognition Week in Minnesota as a time to build awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education plays in our society. Pine City Public Schools are joining all public school districts across the state to honor local board members for their commitment to Pine City and its children. “It takes strong schools to build a strong community, and these men and women devote countless hours to making sure our schools are helping every child learn at a higher level,” Superintendent Annette Freiheit said. “They make the tough decisions every month and spend many hours studying education issues and regulations in order to provide the kind of accountability our citizens expect.” Freiheit said the key work of school boards is to raise student achievement by: • Creating a vision for what the community
wants the school district to be and for making student achievement the top priority; • Establishing standards for what students will be expected to learn and be able to do; • Ensuring progress is measured to be sure the district’s goals are achieved and students are learning at expected levels; • Being accountable for their decisions and actions by continually tracking and reporting results; • Creating a safe, orderly climate where students can learn and teachers can teach; • Forming partnerships with others in the community to solve common problems; and • Focusing attention on the need for continuous improvement by questioning, refining and revising issues related to student achievement. “School board members give the Pine City citizens a voice in education decision making. Even though we make a special effort to show our appreciation in February, their contribution is a year-round commit-

Most refunds sent in less than 21 days; EITC/ACTC refunds starting Feb. 27 The IRS expects to issue more than nine out of 10 refunds in less than 21 days. However, it’s possible a tax return may require additional review and take longer. “Where’s My Refund?” has the most up to date information available about refunds. The tool is updated only once a day, so taxpayers don’t need to check more often. The IRS also notes that refunds, by law, cannot be issued before Feb. 15 for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit.
This applies to the entire refund — even the portion not associated with the EITC and ACTC. While the IRS will process the EITC and ACTC returns when received, these refunds cannot be issued before Feb. 15. Similar to last year, the IRS expects the earliest EITC/ACTC related refunds to actually be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards starting on Feb. 27, 2019, if they chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with the tax return. “Where’s My Refund?” on IRS.gov and the IRS2Go

The IRS, tax preparers and tax software will not have additional information on refund dates, so these Àlers should not contact or call about refunds before the end of February. No glass slippers for these princesses, they want hockey skates BY LANCELOT E. FURBER SPORTS@PINECITYMN.COM
The Little Miss Pine City Ambassador program crowns two first grade girls each summer, and for the past seven years at least one of those crowned princesses has also been a Pine City Youth Hockey player. The Pine City Ambassador program and Pine City Youth Hockey both have planted their roots deep within the Pine City community. It takes drive, dedication and determination to participate in one of these activities, not to mention finding success in both. Long after removing their princess crowns and placing on the hockey helmets, these young ladies will continue to represent Pine City as successful ambassadors, students and athletes.

Bluejacket hockey ends season in Grand Rapids BY BILL STICKELS EDITOR@COUNTYSTAR.COM
Despite one of their better records in team history, the Cambridge-IsantiMor-Pine City Bluejackets
were only able to get the #5 seed for the Section 7AA tournament, resulting in the Jackets having to travel up to Grand Rapids. Originally scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 7, the game
was postponed by a day. That delay certainly didn’t help the Jackets, as they fell to the Lightning 5-0, ending their season in the opening round of sections. Three days prior, CIMPC
ended their regular season with an easy 6-1 win over St. Francis/North Branch. The Jackets jumped out to a 5-0 lead before giving up the only Saints goal in the third period. Madelyn Skel-
ton picked up the hat trick for the Jackets, scoring the first two goals, along with the fifth goal. Also scoring were Rilee Winters, Jenna Hari and Sam Olson. CIMPC was so dominant,
they racked up 60 shots on goal for the game, while only yielding 15 Saints shots, with 11 of those coming in the third period after the game was already out of reach.

Dragons head into playoffs in 5th seed BY LANCELOT E. FURBER SPORTS@PINECITYMN.COM
On Tuesday, Feb. 12, Pine City hosted Proctor for their last regular season game on home ice. The JV Dragons were up against a hot goaltender and could not find a way to score, falling to Proctor 3-0. With many chances to score, Pine City could not beat the Proctor goalie to bury the puck. Mason Olson stepped up in the nets for the Dragons, to keep this match-up scoreless until about 10 minutes left in the game. This was the final season game for the Dragon JV squad. “First off a thank you to all the JV boys for their hard work and dedication this season,” said coach Grant Nicoll. “These boys came together and bonded and became both better hockey players and better people.”
LANCE FURBER | THE PIONEER
Laven makes MN Hockey Hub Alex Laven, junior goaltender for the Dragons, faced his highest shot total for the season (51) as he posted a .941 save percentage in the Dragons 4-3 overtime win against Duluth Denfeld on Feb. 2. Laven made 10 saves during the overtime period alone. This feat put Laven in the running and allowed him to win the vote for the Minnesota Hockey Hub Top Performer from Jan. 28 - Feb. 2.
PROCTOR 6, PINE CITY 1 Unfortunately, the varsity Dragons fell into quicksand during their final regular home season game, falling to Proctor 6-1. In sports, quicksand is a situation where no matter what you do, things only get worse, even if you are trying/playing your hardest to make things better. PINE CITY 4, GENTRY ACADEMY 2 With Tuesday night’s game behind them, the varsity Dragons traveled south, on Thursday Feb. 14, to take on a new “hockey” based private school called Gentry Academy. This team was comprised
of student hockey players from all over the state, maybe even country. They brought in ex-pro coaches to assist their athletes on their hockey skills; however, it was the Dragons who were impressive on the ice, defeating Gentry Academy 4-2. “We knew it would be a battle. The boys were very excited to redeem themselves after the horrific game on Tuesday,” stated coach Nicoll. “Gentry had just beat Proctor 6-2 the night before, and Proctor beat us 6-1 the night before that.” The game was very fast paced and both teams were forced to show their skills. The Dragons dug their skates into the ice and showed that Tuesday night’s loss was a fluke and that they were back on their game. Pine City took the lead, early in the first period, and Gentry answered back ending the period tied 1-1. The Dragons took the lead with another goal in the second period; however, Gentry answered right back. In the third period the game-winning goal came off the stick (knee) of Seth Linnell. Not a bad time to make your first varsity goal the game winner in the last game of the regular season. Jordan Stich showed his lightning speed to win a race and bury an empty netter to seal the deal with eight seconds left in the game. Alex Laven protected the Dragon net with 32 saves on 34 shots on goal. George Miller had one goal and two assists. Jordan
Stich had one goal and one assist. Joey Mikyska and Seth Linnell both ended the night with a goal each. Gabe Westbrook is credited for two assists and Parker Sell picked up one assist. “A little cap on the end of the regular season. This team had high hopes coming into the year. The coaching staff expected nothing but the absolute best from them. Early in the year we struggled. We struggled at everything, we could not find our identity. At one time our record was 3-8-1. That’s three wins, eight losses and one tie. We ended the regular season with a 15-9-2 record. That means in our last 14 games we went 12-1-1. That is an amazing feat for these young men, and they should be very proud. We told them last night to soak it all in, enjoy it, cherish it,” said Nicoll. “Now we are back to 0-0-0. This is a new season, time to get to work and prepare for playoffs. We have hit many of our goals like our fourth consecutive conference championship, a winning record and so on. We have one left – a trip to the X!” The Section 5A bracket was released Sunday, Feb. 17, and the Dragons were placed fifth seed. They will be traveling to and playing against Chisago Lakes. The Dragons lost both of their regular season games against Chisago Lakes by one point. These teams last met on the ice on Dec. 31, early in the season during the time the Dragons were not playing at the level they are today.

The Dragons girls basketball team picked up a big section win against the rival Milaca Wolves, on Tuesday, Feb. 12, with a dominating second half to win this battle 84-63. The first half was very competitive, with the first eight minutes being owned by Milaca who built a 21-12 lead over Pine City. The Dragons then took charge with a 10-0 run and went into the locker-room, at the half, with a 39-34 lead. The second half was dominated by the Drag-
ons as they continued to build the lead and showed their strength under the board. Both Hannah Lorsung and Meredith Kolling did a great job in securing eight rebounds apiece. Chloe Alleman, Ashley Faur and Ellie Hasz were also strong under the board; all secured four rebounds each. Sophie Lahti also continues to be a key contributor on defense while picking up offensive points. Pine City showed a very good scoring balance with four Dragons scoring in double figures. Both home and away, Pine City defeats rival Braham BY LANCELOT E. FURBER SPORTS@PINECITYMN.COM
Because of the makeup game, the Dragons ended up playing Braham twice this past week, which is something you do not see often. PINE CITY 85, BRAHAM 62 On Tuesday, Feb. 12, Pine City’s boys basketball team traveled to Braham for their first matchup. On offense, Pine City totaled 26 assists on their way to their 85-62 victory over Braham. “Braham has to be one of the hardest places to play. All of the history, winning, and great basketball that has been played in that gym, it has a certain feel. The Braham name is still synonymous with basketball in the state of Minnesota. When people say ‘Braham,’ they think basketball,” said coach Kyle Allen. Pine City had a great night defensively and showed their strength under the boards with a lot of Dragon contributors. Seth Logan led Pine City with nine total rebounds, followed by Christian Fromm, Chris Trudeau and Jake Adams, all with seven. The Dragons ended the night with 49 total rebounds. Konner Jusczak stepped up on defense taking two charges, turning the ball over to the Dragons, and Nick Hansmann took one. PINE CITY 89, ONAMIA 29 On Thursday, Feb. 14, the Dragons were back

on the road traveling to Onamia for their second of three conference games that week. While it was a close game early on, the Dragons were able to extend the lead to defeat Onamia 89-29. Pine City was able to limit their offensive turn-overs to under 10, which played a key role during this match-up. PINE CITY 69, BRAHAM 44 The next night, Friday, Feb. 15, the Dragons were back on their home court for their second match-up of the week against Braham. Pine City could not find their rhythm early in the first half, which led to a high Dragon foul count. “The game itself was very choppy. We could
never really get into a rhythm. Part of that was our own aggressiveness that led to the foul count,” said coach Allen. “We out-fouled Braham 22-7 in the game. But I was happy with how we continued to be aggressive and did not get frustrated in the process.” Foul problems didn’t hinder the Dragons’ scoring capabilities as Pine City defeated Braham, for the second time this week, with a final score of 69-44. On Friday, Feb. 22, the Dragons play their last season home game hosting Moose Lake/Willow River.

Pine City and rival Braham come together for a purpose Braham was generous enough to participate in Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer night with Pine City this year. It is an organization that raises funds and awareness for the research to help stop childhood cancers. Because of the makeup game, Pine City ended up playing Braham twice this past week. Because of the circumstances, they were able to have the event both at Braham and at Pine City. At the game the teams had a free will donation that the crowd could participate in. All of the proceeds went to the Karly Irlbeck family. Karly is a senior at Pine City High School and was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma this fall. “I am so appreciative of our community and Braham for coming together for this purpose,” said coach Kyle Allen.

parking spaces. A male driver, later identified as Paul Michael Hein, 39, of Mora, and the woman from the pawn shop videos were in the vehicle. Hein said he did not have a driver’s license, and it was later found that his license had been revoked. The female passenger said the vehicle belonged to her but she hadn’t transferred the title yet. The deputy found evidence of drug use and found a baggie that tested positive for methamphetamine. Also in the vehicle were multiple tire irons and pry bars and numerous power tools. A burglary victim later identified the tools as having been stolen from them. According to Pine County investigators, the woman admitted pawning two guns but said she didn’t know they were stolen. She eventually told the investigator that she got the guns from Hein and gave him the money after she sold them. Hein has been charged with felony burglary, illegal possession of a firearm or ammunition, and receiving stolen property.
Farmers’ workshop coming up in Pine City BY MIKE GAINOR EDITOR@PINECITYMN.COM
Local farmers will have the chance to learn how to improve their yields at an upcoming workshop in Pine City. The University of Minnesota Extension has announced that their Corn & Soybean Crop Update Workshop for area crop producers will be held on Tuesday, March 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pine City American Legion Heath Perkins Post 51 in Pine City. Farmers and agricultural professionals are invited to learn the latest corn and soybean management strategies from experts at the workshop. Pine County Extension’s Terry Salmela said the workshop is for farmers, “Who ... want to find out why they lost 25-50 bushels of corn yield potential by not getting a late application of nitrogen on.” He said experts on local growing conditions share the same opinion about using nitrogen fertilizer. “You’ve almost got to feed your corn crop a little at a time,” Salmela explained. “Pre-plant, plant, side dress or maybe even a late application. With a lot of rain, nitrogen moves down in the soil quickly. It leaches out of the root zones. You know, we’ve been getting these ... 100 year rains the last three summers, and as a result, the nitrogen leaches out and your profit goes down the drain.” WATERHEMP, COVER CROPS AND MORE According to Extension, those attending will learn about: • An update on weed control for corn and soybeans along with the management of waterhemp and other emerging weeds by David Nicolai, U of M Extension-Crops • Urea in crop production: Increasing efficiency with additives, placement and time of application for East Central Minnesota by Jared Spackman, U of M Soil Scientist • Crop insurance options update for 2019 – by Amy Kramer, Insurance Training Specialist, Compeer Financial • Soybean white mold biology and management strategies for East Central Minnesota—What to consider in 2019 and beyond by Dr. James Kurle, U of M Plant Pathologist • Integrating cover crop into a conventional corn-soybean rotation in East Central Minnesota agriculture: A Farmer’s Perspective by Ryan Clark, Mn Dept. of Ag and Jason Zastera, fifth generation farmer at Pine View Farms • Changing soil pH and what options are available in East

‘I’m just trying to help people’ Man’s mission to help kids goes through Pine City McDonalds BY JONATHAN RICHIE EDITOR@BURNETTCOUNTYSENTINEL.COM
James Smith of Grantsburg spends most of his spare time doing work that will ultimately benefit other people. For 42 years he has collected and donated pull tabs off aluminum cans to the Ronald McDonald House in Minneapolis. He has easily processed over a million tabs over those years. His current count, which dates back to last January, is over 450,000 tabs. In the corner of his room at Shady Knoll rest 10 full boxes of pull tabs. “Those are all ready to go with me and my mother to Pine City,” Smith says as he points to the two piles of boxes. Smith, along with his mother Esther, takes the boxes full of pull tabs to the McDonald’s restaurant in Pine City. “Then they load them onto a big truck and drive them down to the Ronald McDonald house,” he said. Smith does not do this alone. He has helpers throughout Grantsburg and the country. “I’ve got friends in Texas and they come up here and bring me tabs. Also, there’s Lisa from Oregon, she sends me tabs too,” Smith says as he sits in his chair at his processing station. While chatting with Smith, he lists off a number of people that are instrumental in helping him collect the tabs. “Danielle Hanson and my cousin Carole. Then there’s also Jeannie, Jackie and Scottie and Kelley,” Smith recites. “Oh and lots of people help Shady Knoll with collecting the tabs.” One of his biggest supporters is his employer, Diversified Services Inc. in Siren. “DSI has a container at the front door and the back door for collecting tabs,” Smith said. “People like donating their tabs. They finish a can of pop and then get the tab off and put it in the container. When that’s full I bring it here and get them ready for the boxes.” The 10 boxes in his room are labeled with his name and address on them so the Ronald McDonald house knows where they are coming from. “After I get home from work I probably sit here and work with the tabs from 5:30 to 10

o’clock,” Smith explains. “Then on the weekends I work on these all day.” He has a strong work ethic and enjoys giving back. “It’s better than sitting around doing nothing and I like helping the kids and their parents and this all helps with getting their treatment for cancer. Or the money they get from the tabs goes to equipment for cancer patients.” Recently people have started dropping off entire cans for Smith to go through. “After I take off the tab, I collect the cans and then donate them to the Grantsburg Fire Department,” he said. Anyone interested in dropping off tabs with Smith can take them directly to Shady Knoll home in Grantsburg at 240 W. Broadway Ave.

Provided by the MN DNR on Feb. 19, 2019. Pine City: Conservation officer Eugene Wynn checked anglers and worked snowmobile activity in the Pine City area. He answered questions about shelter licensing, state forest laws, and trespassing. Snowmobile trails are still a bit rough but should improve with grooming. Hinckley: Conservation officer Bret Grundmeier handled a few trespassing complaints involving hunting without permission and operating snowmobiles on private land. Snowmobilers are reminded to avoid driving on snow-covered farm fields, without permission, that are adjacent to grant-in-aid snowmobile trails. Recent snowfall had area trails in good condition. Ice fishing also continued to be busy and the recent snow amounts caused a few anglers to get their pickups struck while trying to bring wheelhouses out on the lake.

Weed of the Month:
Grecian foxglove - not for the faint of heart BY ANNIKA BOLLESEN CONSERVATION CORPS OF MINNESOTA ALUMNI
Grecian foxglove (Digitalis lanata) is a beautiful but toxic invasive plant. It was brought to North America from its native Europe as an ornamental plant. Grecian foxglove thrives in sunny to partially shaded areas and has been found in Washington County, Minnesota. All plant parts are toxic, alive or dried, necessitating careful handling with protective clothing and equipment. This is a threat to humans and other animals. Additionally, Grecian foxglove overtakes and unbalances the ecosystems it takes root in.
Grecian foxglove is a perennial plant that forms a rosette then sends up a flowering stem its second and subsequent years. The flowering stems are 2-5 feet tall. Its leaves are oblong-shaped with pointed tips and are simple and alternately placed on the stem. Flower color ranges from white to faint yellow with brownish-purple venation inside. Some of the ways Grecian foxglove can be distinguished from its look alike, common or garden foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), is that Grecian foxglove has woolly hairs located on the stems and sepals, green petals that surround and protect the flower bud, and garden foxglove’s flowers display a much wider color spec-
trum. Grecian foxglove synthesizes cardiotoxic glycosides. These toxic compounds impact cardiovascular, neurological and gastrointestinal systems after ingestion or absorption through skin. Poisoning symptoms include headache, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, strange dreams, arrhythmias and changes in vision. On Feb. 13 the Meshakwad Community Center in Hinckley held a boxing clinic for area youth. The clinic was put on by Top Rank Boxing and featured World Champion Boxers Rob Brant, Joshua Greer and Mikela Mayer. The pros taught the kids techniques in shadow boxing, heavy bag and jump rope. Greer, who ran the heavy bag station, told the kids to always be a leader and stay in school and they can accomplish their goals. Mayer ran the shadow boxing station; she competed for Team USA in the 2016 Olympics. Brant, who is from St. Paul, told the kids to work hard every day. The pros were in Hinckley to compete at Grand Casino Hinckley on Friday, Feb. 15. All three of the boxers won their matches that night.
