New to Rendezvous By Jaycie (Cundall) Cheatham
New attractions are coming to the 81st annual Green River Rendezvous celebration! The festivities were created to keep the original Rendezvous traditions alive, but each year committees and local businesses dream up new ways to keep people coming back to Pinedale’s most popular weekend of the year. The Museum of the Mountain Man will feature many of the same popular programs at Rendezvous this year as it has in the past – Bad Hand Plains Indian demonstrations, American Mountain Men Encampment, Lapita Frewin’s Native American Children’s Crafts and the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade Journal Forum – with a few new additions. The museum is celebrating its 10th Anniversary of the Journal and will have a special celebration Thursday, July 7, at 6 p.m. and will present an opportunity to get a copy of the out-of-print volumes. Thursday evening will also feature a fur trade question-and-answer session with the museum’s fur trade experts, including Clay Landry who was a historical consultant for the movie “The Revenant,” beginning at 7 p.m. The museum will also be presenting two new demonstrations, one on early 1800s medicine on Friday, July 8, at 3 p.m. and one on spinning an elk rawhide towrope using a “ropeworks” on Saturday, July 9, at 11 a.m. Several new exhibits will be on display at the museum, including the Hugh Glass bear attack diorama, featuring a trophy-mount grizzly. Also on display is a handmade, lifesize replica of a buffalo skin canoe and a Red River cart – or charrette. Make sure to check out the newly renovated upstairs gallery, which was redone over the winter and now
features a new layout and all new interpretation panels. Art and Craft Supplies of Pinedale is hosting “Painting in the Park,” Thursday, July 7, at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Park. The event is free and participants do not need

any previous artistic experience. Just bring a blanket or chair from home; everything else will be provided, including snacks and supplies. The street fair vendors are no longer being located along Pine Street but have been moved to North Tyler Avenue, next to the Sublette County Visitor Center. The Kids’ Fishing Derby and barbeque, co-sponsored by the chamber and Jonah Energy, has been moved from Saturday afternoon to Friday, July 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Boyd Skinner Park. The event is for children 12 years and younger with prizes awarded every half hour and three grand prizes for the largest fish at the end. The Wind River Dancers will perform only on Saturday, July 9, at 1:30 p.m. at the American Legion Park, after

Rendezvous sites and sights By Joy Ufford
Folks will get another opportunity this year to embark on bus tours of Green River Rendezvous historical sites – most marked by signs but passed unnoticed in everyday life. Museum of the Mountain Man (MMM) guest and local historians will provide details on this area’s importance during the fur-trade era. Buses stop at the MMM, Fort Bonneville, Green River Rendezvous site, DeSmet Monument, Willow Creek horse race and Fremont Lake’s overlook. Sublette BOCES are once again organizing the free event for all ages.
Fremont Lake looks more like a ‘Loch Drummond’ bathed in highland mists, as travelers hear tales about early adventures at the lake. The lake was often called Loch Drummond or Stewart’s Lake after Scots adventurer William Drummond Stewart, who loved to come to Rendezvous.
Above: The stone memorial to Belgian Jesuit priest Father Pierre Jean DeSmet marks the first Catholic mass in the West on July 5, 1840, during Rendezvous. It overlooks Horse Creek and the Green River – the most popular meeting site for suppliers and trappers. One year, a rabid wolf bit several people who contracted ‘hydrophobia.’ Right: Participants stop at the Museum of the Mountain Man’s replica Crow lodge where speakers relate how starving trapper Robert Stewart made his way to Pine Creek and saw a very tall lodge with buffalo skulls, carcasses and small moccasins. Two more were reported in the area, all three believed to be Crow ‘sundance’ lodges.

Lapita Frewin is back for children’s programs By Roundup/Examiner staff
Heading up the children’s programs at the Museum of the Mountain Man for Green River Rendezvous Days for another year is Lapita Frewin. Registered with the Navajo tribe of Northern Arizona, Frewin is a graduate of Brigham Young University in social work, with a minor in Native American studies. Along with being co-owner of Edgewater Creations, she was selected as one of sev-
eral artists to create items for Robert Redford’s Sundance catalog and was recently commissioned to recreate a beaded, white buckskin dress and shirt, such as those that were used in Plains Indian wedding ceremonies. Frewin’s children’s programs are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, both morning and afternoon sessions. Her programs are free to the public.

‘Meet me on the Green!’ By Roundup/Examiner staff
Festivities in Sublette County from July 7 to 10 will culminate to create an experience unlike any other – except that of the original Green River Rendezvous. “Meet me on the Green!” was the cry of trappers promising to see one another once again in the summer. The first rendezvous, held in 1833 in the Green River Valley near Pinedale, was designated as a meeting of mountain men and traders to exchange valuable supplies for pelts used for the then-popular felt hats, collars and coats. Mountain men gathered to drink, gamble, barter, restock and socialize – why are you here for the 2016 Rendezvous? You are celebrating the past, discovering the history, perhaps taking a vacation worthy of a mountain man. When you trade paper money for a beaver skin offered by a man decked out in buckskin and moccasins, you are not so far from the action of a trader hired by a fur company; traders paid trappers for

pelts with supplies or money at genuine Rendezvous. Chow down at the Buffalo Burger fry at the and eat like a mountain man, who survived on what he could hunt; while you seek out the Museum of the Mountain Man, where the fry will be held, be
grateful you didn’t trap for the hat your neighbor wears while camping through the frozen winter. Try jerky while meandering through Traders Row. Have some “arwerdenty” if you need some liquid courage to ask someone to dance at the Saturday night dance. While you watch the rodeos, note that the mountain men could ride, but the root of the Rendezvous rodeos’ history lies in the Green River Valley ranching way of life that is everywhere. A better understanding of mountain men, Native Americans and the fur trade can be acquired at one of the many learning opportunities presented by the museum. Relive camping while modern mountain men share campfire stories on the museum ground. The pageant also represents the rich history of the fur trade era; absorb the events represented by today’s participants and compare your life to that of a mountain man, today’s Rendezvous to that of 1833.
American Indians’ relationship to the mountain men By Examiner/Roundup staff
The Native American population of the wild and wooly west has changed conversely of that of whites. The Green River Valley, long inhabited entirely by Indian tribes, is now largely populated by Caucasians, and is approximately 150 miles from the only reservation in Wyoming – the Wind River Indian Reservation. Today, that reservation is home to more than 12,000 Native Americans – that is, 3,900 of Eastern Shoshone and 8,600 Northern Arapaho, according to the Bureau of Indian Affairs “The two major Eastern Shoshone groups were the Mountain Sheep Eaters (Mountain People) of the Yellowstone region and the Buffalo Eaters (Sage Brush People) of the valleys of the Green and Wind rivers. Combined, the two groups numbered close to 3,000 at the beginning of the 19th century,” states an article in “The Fur Trade and Rendezvous of the Green River Valley,” a publication by the FILE PHOTO Museum of the Mountain Man. The Wind River Dancers present traditional and original dances on Saturday. Horses became their main bartering item, which mountain men preferred for their fleetness and durability in the mountains,” as the Nez Perce were renowned for their extraordinary horse breeding. It was the Indians who showed the fur trappers the way through the mountains by way of South Pass, and the two nations became fellow hardy survivors of the rugged lifestyle in the mountains. Mountain men consistently married Native American women to accompany them through harsh winters in the wilderness, tend camp and assist in treating pelts for sale at the yearly Rendezvous. “Some Flathead men became part of trapping brigades. More often it was Flathead women who became the wives of trappers. As with Nez Perce women, Flathead women were among those most desired by the mountain men for marriage. These marriages created important bonds and benefited both partners in their respective societies,” states “The Fur Trade and Rendezvous of the Green River Valley.” As a result of these bonds, the two cultures welcomed one another and melded, with horse races, gambling and trading amongst the two groups growing into strong relations before the battles between the American cavalry and Native American tribes.

Rodeos, races and rippling muscles By Examiner/Roundup staff
Rendezvous always has a wide array of good-natured competitions included in the festivities and this year will be no different. From frying-pan throwing at Traders Row to muscle men flexing their bulging biceps to the annual basketball tournament at the PAC, this year showcases plenty of athletic prowess to go along with the leather fringe.
