IT TAKES PERSISTENCE TO SUCCEED WHILE ADVERSITY BUILDS EXCELLENCE Looking at the life stories of many self-made millionaires like Richard Branson, Steve Jobs and a host of others, a common theme is that they all had some failures and dead-ends on their journey. What brought them success was belief in their ideals and stubborn persistence in making them real. They were able to pick themselves up, find another angle to try and carry on with renewed enthusiasm. People today are faced with far more competition in their business and everyday lives than ever before. This makes for a hard and bruising daily routine to just keep afloat, never mind getting ahead. With goods and skills moving so easily and quickly around the world, you can't just be the best in your town or country — you have to match the best the world has to offer. Tough as that may be, it is what builds excellence, and very quickly. I'm not saying that I enjoy this state of affairs — life really was more sedate and gentle before the world arrived on our doorsteps. Perhaps like successful entrepreneurs we just need to have a firm belief in an ideal and the persistence to follow it, becoming the best in our field simply for the love of it, and see adversity and competiton as the next bar to clear on that journey. If, in the early evening or later, you hear a soft `hoooo-hoooo’, this will almost certainly be a Spotted Eagle Owl. There are a few pairs resident in Pinelands and are rarely seen unless you know exactly where they sleep during the day. At night they patrol on silent wings along the canal and sports playing fields or larger gardens. They are searching for food in the form of live rats and mice which are attracted to our area to scavenge from our rubbish. They breed during our winter and use old and abandoned Pied Crow’s nests in the larger pine trees. Text by Ian Sinclair co-author of Cape Peninsula Birdlife by Roy Siegfried & Ian Sinclair. Greg Roberts of Pinelands sent us the image above of a Spotted Eagle Owl which he saw outside their kitchen in early January. Greg was able to get within 2 meters of the Owl before it flew away.

If the activity level is anything to go by then the buyers have decided that this is going to be the year to get into the property market. Until October last year there was very little excitement, then suddenly the floodgates seemed to open. We sold five properties in November and three in December… and it has not let up since then. After a well-earned break over the festive season we got back to the office in January with our e-mail boxes full of enquiries. In the first few days we have serviced in excess of 60 enquiries from enthusiastic buyers (not all qualified) who wanted to view our properties. It did not end there. It seemed as if the sellers also decided that 2013 was going to be the year in which they get their finances in order. With the cost of maintenance and increases in water and electricity charges, many are opting for smaller accommodation or alternative investments. There were also those who wanted to upgrade, looking for a different lifestyle. In the first week we have done six valuations, taken on four new mandates and are busy with four offers on homes that are realistically priced. There is definitely an increase in the number of first time buyers — amongst them doctors, teachers and accountants. Pinelands has always been popular with professional people because of its proximity to the University, hospitals, schools and airport. These stats are borne out by our mortgage originator Ooba, who has just reported that 52.7% of all loan applications are from first time buyers who are expected to drive a modest house price increase in 2013. We believe that this buyer’s market will persist in 2013 and we advise that potential buyers should ensure that they have the ability to access a deposit as the banks continue to fine tune credit policies with 100% loans a thing of the past.

Keaton Saunders head boy Rondebosch Boys’ High School — 2013 Keaton Saunders and Stefano De Gouveia, were elected as Head Prefect and Deputy Head Prefect, respectively, of Rondebosch Boys’ High School for 2013. Together with the team of prefects they have embraced their E13 year with particular emphasis on group participation and a sense of community which they believe will foster unity amongst pupils at Rondebosch Boys’ High School. Keaton has excelled on the tennis court as a member of the RBHS 1st tennis team and reached both provincial and national level (he was ranked number 2 in South Africa in the U14 and U16 division when he played in this age group). He confirms that his tennis roots were very firmly established at the Pinelands Tennis Club. Keaton also made the WP athletics side last year and intends playing rugby in his final year at school as well as continue playing tennis at provincial level. Keaton lives in Pinelands with his parents, Allan and Di Saunders and his sister, Kendra, who is a pupil at Rustenburg School for Girls.

St George's Grammar School congratulates the 2012 MATRIC CLASS There were smiles all round at St George’s Grammar School (SGGS) on Thursday 3 January with the release of the 2012 Matric results. The 33 candidates of the Class of 2012 achieved a 94% Bachelor Pass rate. Included in this overall achievement were 71 A symbols and 57 B symbols . The top achievers at SGGS for 2012 were Nicole Moodley and James van Duuren with eight distinctions each; Lauren Hess and Mary Jang with six distinctions each;

Narae Lee with five distinctions and Ayesha Bradlow, Ayesha Camroodien and Tomas Kranenburg with four distinctions each. A significant fact is that three of these eight top achievers started their school careers at St George’s Grammar School in Pre Grade R in 1999 – they are Lauren Hess, Nicole Moodley and James van Duuren. The 2012 results show an increase of 7% in Bachelor Passes when compared to the results of 2011. The St George’s Grammar School Matric class of 2012 achieved a Bachelor Pass rate of 94%. Cannons Creek 2012 Matric AChievers Cannons Creek Independent School is very proud of the Matrics of 2012 who once again achieved a 100% pass rate. Four of the class of 16 pupils achieved five A's – Ha Som Suh (Dux of the school), Che Mohesh, Alex Wilmot and Jed Johnson. Ha Som will be pursuing International Studies at a university in Seoul, Korea. Che will be studying Medicine, Alex, Chemical Engineering and Jed is doing either Commerce or Business Studies. The Principal, Mike van Haght, said that he was very happy with all the results, not only those achieved by the top pupils. The other pupils also did well, even the foreign students; despite their language disadvantage. The class of 16 Matric pupils accumulated 42 distinctions among them. All but three of the pupils scored at least one subject A.

Jed Johnson and Cameron Stuart are two teenage friends (19 and 18 years of age respectively) who took it upon themselves to cycle from Cape Town to Mozambique aiming to raise funds and create awareness for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA)’s Youth on the Move campaign. Youth on the Move is a CANSA campaign that targets and challenges the youth of South Africa to lead healthy and well balanced lifestyles with emphasis on exercise, healthy and balanced eating habits, avoiding intoxicating oneself with alcohol, smoking and obesity. The aim of Youth on the Move is to reduce lifestyle related diseases, such as cancer, for South Africa’s future generation. Money raised through their efforts will go towards facilitating youth and school awareness programmes.

Most of her career was spent at Simon's Town and Fish Hoek SAPS, serving as Station Commander at Ocean View SAPS, and as acting Station Commander at Muizenberg SAPS. "My vision for Pinelands SAPS and the community is to create a safe environment for the community at large, especially for the children and senior citizens. I should like to see them enjoying their well-deserved retirement within the boundaries of our area. New Beginnings Time management goes a long way in helping us to achieve the goals we set for ourselves and for our children. Add good eating habits and plenty of sleep and you are looking at a recipe for success in the year ahead. New Year — New Beginnings

I always compare the beginning of the year to Spring where each plant has the opportunity to 'start over' and to once again produce beautiful flowers. When we start the new year there are so many exciting things to look forward to with regard to schooling. A new teacher, a new classroom, new friends, new clean exercise books, a new start at working neatly and trying to achieve better results.

Choosing your goals

However, none of these things get off the ground if the person concerned does not make the effort. So, how does one get the process started? Parents have to assist their children in deciding what their goals are for the year. They must be reachable goals. It's no use requesting one’s child to achieve 80% if they are struggling academically, one needs to be realistic. Set a few goals incorporating class results, homework procedures, sport, hobbies, and friends.

Balancing homework and sport

The most important thing is to organise one's homework/study procedure at home. Look at your child’s sporting requirements and work around them. Ensure that your child is not overloaded with sporting activities — get a good balance. Break up the time spent on homework into two sessions. Written work can be done first. Here a timer is a good help (especially for younger children). Let them decide how long should be spent on a certain piece of work and then set the timer. This should get them to concentrate on the task in order to complete it. Learning can take place in the second session. Request

your child’s teacher to incorporate study methods in their teaching day in order to assist the children.

Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep

Reading by younger children can be done whilst you are preparing supper in the kitchen if you run out of time. But, most importantly, don’t let your child stay up late working. They become tired and ratty and one does not achieve anything. They need their sleep in order to work the next day.

The morning routine

Another aspect one could address is the routine to start the day. Discuss this new routine with your child so that they take ownership of it. Use a calendar and mark off all the days where they comply and give them a reward at the end of the month with you doing something together with them — these can be discussed beforehand so that you know what you are getting yourself into! The dinner table as the family chat room Another new routine could be to have meals together in the evening. Spend time with your children around the dining room table. Here you can discuss the day, general topics of what is happening in the country and even discuss things that they have seen on the television. It is this form of communication that our children are sadly losing as the new trend is to eat in front of the TV. Children learn most from parents and in our busy world, the dining room table is a great place for this to happen.

Boundaries for technology in the home

Let your children spend half an hour per day either on the computer or watching a programme on the television. Both of these need to be supervised by parents so that you know what your child is being exposed to. In today’s world it is so important for parents to be involved in modern technology and to set up firm boundaries.

Pinelanders Johann Wilkinson is the South African Junior Men's National Champion for Figure Ice Skating. He exhibits an enormous enthusiasm for skating and hopes to make this his career. The Muse spoke to Johann at the Ice Station at Grand West as he prepares to represent South Africa in competition at the Helmut Seibt Memorial, Vienna, Austria, in February.

Johann Wilkinson Johann and his sister, Marike, changed from horse riding to ice skating when his sister became enthralled by the movie Ice Princess. His Coach, Dantin Broodryk, who runs Junior Blades, recognised the 11 year old's potential. Soon, Johann convinced his mother to allow him to take private lessons. His first time on the ice — 12 April 2006.

The journey

Experience in athletics, especially long and high jump, was an advantage for Johann as he believes he started his ice skating with a strong set of muscles, which other skaters, who start at a younger age, still have to develop. Music appreciation is important for the ice routines, and although he doesn't have time anymore, he is a self taught guitarist and piano player.

Important attributes

Obviously balance is key, along with athleticism, drama, acting abilities, and the ability to 'feel' the music. Johann includes patience, perseverance, and discipline as extremely important for any skater to be successful, and as a Junior Blades club coach he is always looking out for youngsters with a sizzling hunger for skating — something to indicate their commitment to the sport.

What is your training schedule?

Johann trains for 16 to 20 hours per week

on the ice, with two to three hours of floor practice per day and strength training. He is currently registered with the Western Cape Home School Academy, studying for Grade 12 through Accelerated Christian Education via self study. "It's tough because I have to achieve 80% to pass" he says.

Competition in Vienna

This will be Johann's first international trip and he is very excited to be representing South Africa. He will be completing two routines. The 'long' routine is four minutes and Johann describes it as a more serious dance — and for this he has chosen a more dramatic Persian type costume — the one shown in the picture above. The music is The Feeling Begins by Peter Gabriel. In contrast, his short routine is performed to catchy foot tapping music — In The Mood by Glen Miller, for this he will wear a subtle black and blue costume that will not detract from the swift dance moves. Johann's mother Mimi makes his outstanding competition costumes — a real labour of love, well appreciated by him.

Where to next?

"I am hoping for a successful international debut, and an opportunity to achieve a new personal best score that will hold me in good stead as a qualifier for the Junior World Figure Skating Championships. Next, I would like to strive for the competitions

in the Senior Men's category and build up to the Four Continents Championships, World Figure Skating Championships and ultimately the Olympics. My role model is Gareth Echardt, South African figure skating champion, who is now performing in theatrical figure skating performances, and I think I would like that to be my career path".

Training for Pro Am

Johann spends close to ten hours a day at the ice rink, which is the main reason that his family moved to Pinelands. The daily routine at the Ice Station includes a form of work shadow as he follows the teaching methods of the coaches at the rink. His notes and comments on the techniques that he observes are going to be compiled into a book which will serve as part of his qualification as a Pro-Am coach for figure skating. Pro-Ams are the top competitive skaters, who give private lessons under the guidance of the professionals. The money they earn goes directly towards their own skating costs. (see sponsorship page 13) 

An ice skating dream

Pinelanders Evan Wrensch, the current Pre-Novice Figure Skating Champion of South Africa is preparing to represent South Africa at the International Challenge Cup in The Hague, Netherlands, in February. It is a tremendous honour for Evan to have been selected for this competition as there are many World ranked skaters that will be competing at this event. An introduction to ice skating Evan began coaching lessons after his talent was noticed by Coach, Dantin Broodryk, when he accompanied his sister to her ice skating classes. Evan's mom, Sandra, could not believe that Dantin would have seen something special in him as a total beginner, however, she relented and allowed him to have one lesson per week. In November 2008, when he was eight years old, he was entered into the under 10 grades competition, and came second. A year later he was competing in the National Championships.

Artistic appreciation of music

Early on Evan realised that his joy of skating was overriding his need to listen to the music. After some effort and training he now has a much better ear for music, making the interpretation and application of artistic expression to his figure skating moves more meaningful.

Competition in The Hague

Evan's short competition routine lasting about two minutes is done to music from Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. In the short routine the skater is required to complete a number of prescribed elements such as jumps, spins and step sequences, for which marks are awarded. Evan includes a couple of karate moves to go with the Bruce Lee theme. He is the youngest figure skater in the Western Cape to attempt the double axel, and is not scared to attempt the triple Salchow jump. In the free session, the skater performs a routine choreographed by the coach, to highlight the music and the skaters ability to synchronise movement to music. wants to challenge the skaters in the much higher sections according to Coach Dantin who calls him the energizer bunny!!

Evan's advice for figure skaters

Evan would quite easily live at the rink if he could but he has had to learn to balance his skating with other sports in order to do cross training. He also enjoys roller blading, cycling, including unicycling, surfing and water skiing. These all require good balance skills and go hand in hand with his fitness training. ď&#x20AC;ź

Firstly join a club such as the Junior Blades Ice Skating Club or Black Panthers Figure Skating Club. Be prepared to practice often â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it can be quite tiring. Be confident enough to try the difficult moves, but don't "be rash". Listen to the music.

Plans and hopes for the future?

Evan's long term goal is to compete in the Junior Worlds, Four Continents Championships and Senior Worlds which will give him the chance to qualify for the Olympics. He understands that this will take hard work and many hours of practice. Evan is extremely dedicated and motivated, perfecting all the difficult skills at as early an age as possible. He attempts very difficult elements and never stops moving. He will roften epeat an element up to 50 times and counts the amount of successful attempts. He is extremely competitive and

Addo Elephant National Park The elephant inspires awe in those who see them, and at Addo Elephant National Park you will see herds of them, and marvel at their huge 7000kg frames lumbering alongside waterholes, carefully guiding and protecting their young.

ix of us drove up to the Eastern Cape in the equivalent of the "volksie bus", cameras around our necks, meat and beers in the cooler for the evening braai, and high expectations for our anticipated elephant encounter. Addo was proclaimed a national park in 1931 to protect the last few remaining elephants in the area and the numbers have grown from a group of 11 to the current day number of 600, spread through the park which has also grown covering 180 000 hectares to now include a marine reserve, where one can see Southern Right Whales between June and December.

Vervet Monkeys

We chose to stay in the log cabins close to the main camp, where we enjoyed our first braai sheltered by the thicket of spekboom, and bathed in the dusky pink hues of the setting sun. On awaking on our first morning we were greeted by a troupe of vervet monkeys. They were very inquisitive and not shy to investigate the tables on the wooden deck for any edible pickings. Cute faces lulled one into a false sense of security — until we saw those sharp little teeth!

Elephant herds at Rooidam

The breakfast at the rest camp restaurant was just what the doctor ordered and set us up for the drive through the park. The gate attendant directed us to our first waterhole — Rooidam. We sat in awe as a large herd of elephants gathered around the water, swimming, drinking, splashing themselves and throwing a few watchful glances in our direction. Our car was full of the sound of camera shutters and plenty of ooh’s and aah’s as the tiny (relatively speaking), baby elephants wiggled their trunks as if they didn’t know what the appendages were for. One youngster was still suckling. Apparently the elephants are used to cars, but not people, and so it is against park rules to get out of the car. It was a wonderfully satisfying

experience watching these 7 000kg giants who consume 200kg food and 150 litres of water per day. We felt our holiday dream had already been fulfilled.

Pit Stop at Jack's Picnic site

The roads through the park are generally in good condition. We took advantage of the ablutions at Jack’s picnic place — a gated refuge in the park where one can picnic and find information of current sightings in the Area. Although the park rangers are sure to warn you not to hang out of the car window, or open the car door (even if it slides open), we found it surprising that there is a kopje called Zuurkop Lookout where one is allowed to get out of the car. It overlooks a waterhole on one side and rolling planes on the other. A not so comforting sign says “Beware of the lions. Alight from your car at your own risk" mmmmmm…

Pick your trail — by car, horse, 4x4 or park ranger driven

There is so much to do at Addo, we only touched the tip of the iceberg. There are horse trails, 4x4 trails, guided trails by the rangers — night and day. There is a swimming pool for the hot afternoons, a museum with interactive exhibits. The accommodation varies from tented camps to log cabins with a raised veranda, chalets and rondavels overlooking the

Travellers main restcamp waterhole. There are also a variety of luxurious lodges and camps to choose from. At the main camp these are all within walking distance of the reception and restaurant and the shop, which sells souvenirs, a very good official guide, wine, fresh produce and most importantly braai wood.

Addo's animal community

The park is also home to black rhino , Cape buffalo, spotted hyena, silverback jackal and lion. There is much said too about the the flightless dungbeetle. One very difficult request to follow is NOT to drive through elephant dung on the park roads, to conserve the dung beetles that may be busy within… Animals that would not historically have been found in the park have not been introduced, so you will not find giraffe, white rhino, impala, waterbuck, red lechwe, blue wildebeest, nyala, and sable antelope.

Elephants with a nose for citrus

Through ongoing research every elephant is named, with many stories about the legendary elephant called Hapoor (damaged through a challenge to his leadership). The official guide also tells us of the practice of feeding the elephants citrus in the early days of the park's existence, to keep the herds within the boundaries and away from the surrounding farmlands. This practice had to be stopped because of the intense excitement caused when the citrus truck arrived — elephants would run and trumpet and become quite agressive. Of course there is plenty for the elephant to eat in the park. Vast dense areas of their favourite juicy snack, spekboom, can be found all over the park. It survives the elephants grazing and trampling it because it can grow easily from small twigs that fall to the ground. The pretty blue plumbago is also abundant in the park and is enjoyed by the elephant, the rhino and the antelope.

PPC Discovery Trail

Early in the morning on day two we felt like Alice in Wonderland as we followed a scrub hare down the path to the PPC Discovery trail, a boardwalk suitable for wheelchairs, with information boards on plants and small animals. Watching the elephants

come to the waterhole at the main camp reception area was quite amusing. The elephants would appear slowly coming over the ridge. Then as they came nearer and nearer to the water they would break into a trot, with the tiny young elephants rushing to keep up. It was not unusual to see a smaller elephant slip into the water over all the mud — and then be helped out again by family nearby.

Birdlife

There is also an underground hide, and if you are lucky, the elephant will come very close on their way to the waterhole. Another early morning pleasure is the abundance of birdlife including Cape Sugarbird, Bokmakierie, flocks of Mouse birds, Cape bulbul, the Cardinal Woodpecker, and Brown Hooded Kingfisher. There's birdsong everywhere.

Almost within arms reach

On our next foray into the park we again headed for Rooidam, but we arrived to a quiet deserted pool of water — no elephant in sight. We drove on and spotted Gemsbok, Bushbuck, heaps of Warthogs, Tortoises and Zebra galloping across an open plain, a Meerkat, and a solitary Black Backed Jackal that just wanted to stay curled up at the side of the road… Then we smelt the elephant before we saw them. The road was covered in fresh piles of steaming elephant dung. Suddenly, around a bend in the road we saw them. Well camouflaged in the bushes right next to the road (almost within arm's reach), they were grazing. Pulling off strips of leaves and pushing them into their mouths — ignoring us completely. Quite terrifying and stangely exhilirating to be so close to a seemingly pre-historic beast.

A farewell treat

We ended our stay at Addo with an evening at the restaurant. The meals were impressive and prices fair, along with the excellent service. Our dishes ranged from trio of springbok on a skewer, venison hot pot served in a miniature poitjie pot and venison steaks. All were excellent, as were the desserts and the coffee. Women−The largest economy in the world

Women are so devious. While the Earth’s super-powers compete for the position of the world’s largest economy, all the females in the world assemble unassumingly together and steal first place. Reeling from being blind-sided by a bunch of girls, the world of retail and marketing is collectively trying to figure out exactly what just happened. Ad agency creative directors (97% of whom are male) are now fumbling through their marketing textbooks for a chapter called “How to market to women”.

Marketers don't understand women

Women now control enormous annual consumer spending and represent a growth market twice the size of China and India combined. It is therefore astonishing that 91% of women feel that marketers don’t understand them. In fact, many marketers are downright dismissive and indifferent to the opinions of the most valuable marketing target on earth.

The fairer sex and the motor industry

Women purchase over 50% of all vehicles in the US, influence 80% of all vehicle purchasing decisions and take ownership of 30 million cars each year. Generally unmoved by speed as a must-have criteria, women have voiced their need for utility and safety above all else when it comes to cars, with pink upholstery being way down on the list — as Honda unwittingly discovered when it launched its speciallyfor-women-vehicle called She’s. Made in several shades of pink with a heart in the logo, pink stitching inside, windows that cut ultraviolet rays to prevent wrinkles and a special air conditioning system designed to improve skin quality. It also boasts pinkgold chrome finishes and a pink key.

Technology marketing blunders

The technology industry hasn't got it right either. Dell’s ad agency covered themselves with professional shame when they launched, Della, a pink laptop specially designed for women with preloaded exercise tips, calorie counters and easy-to-make recipes. Also deserving of public reproach is Fujitsu whose advert for their Floral Kiss laptop failed dismally

in its patronizing attempt to market to a seemingly dim-witted female audience.

Condescension by Bic for Her pens

Nothing beats the sheer condescension of the Bic for Her pen. The slim femmepens come in an assortment of soft, pastel ink colors and feature an attractive barrel design in pink and purple. Bic faced the full wrath of women the world over with one writer blogging, “With Bic for Her my drawings of kittens and ponies have improved, and now that I’m writing my last name hyphenated with Robert Pattinson’s last name, I really believe that someday he’ll marry me. I’m positively giddy.”

More women holding the reigns

With the majority of retrenchments during America’s recession being awarded to men, there are now more women than men in formal employment. American women own 60% of all personal wealth in America, 51% of the stock market and are responsible for 70% of all new business startups.

'She-conomy' has arrived

Juggling motherhood, creating careers and managing households has resulted in the female consumer feeling over-extended whilst at the same time underserved by consumer providers, with healthcare and the financial services industry being ostensibly least understanding of women’s needs. Experts all agree on one thing: the ‘she-conomy’ has arrived and big business has started, albeit slowly, acknowledging that this may well be a case of "while the left hand rocks the cradle, the right hand rules the world". 
