About the cover: The old steam roller in Coronation Park was used in the making of the original roads of Pinelands when it was first being developed as a Garden City in the early 1920's. It has now served more years in the park as part of the children's playground than it did as a road maker. It has been colourfully painted and is kept company by the old painted tractor, swings, slide and the merry-go-round. The memorial stone in the park commemorating Queen Elizabeth's coronation in 1953 still stands but the legend is barely readable. Coronation Park is on Elizabeth Avenue.
BEAUTY, HEALTH, WEALTH AND WELLNESS
Beauty — Having a personal attraction not too far below the statistical norm. Health — Being able to do the physical activities you want to do. Wealth — Having the financial means to afford the lifesyle and possessions you require. Wellness — Having a feeling of contentment about your life. A little plain perhaps, but these are the basic requirements we need in these areas of our life to 'feel happy'. Of course, each of us has a personal aspiration according to our desires and ambitions, and the level of aspiration varies so much between each of us. Various international studies have found little correlation between wealth or beauty and the happiness of an individual. Our 'wellness', or contentment with our life, is probably the real measure of how 'happy' we feel. Contentment is directly linked to how close we come to the aspirations we have for our lives. That's not to say we shouldn't aim high in life. It does mean though, that the higher you aim, the higher your risk of unhappiness can be if your goals are not attained. Perhaps then, the safest route to wellness and contentment is to either: — have aspirations which are reasonable, but enough to satisfy ourselves, — or if we are naturally high achievers or big dreamers, to remember that the high targets we set for ourselves are somewhat arbitrary and not an absolute guarantee of greater happiness so we should not harbour regrets should we not attain them. Enjoy the Issue!
Birds in Pinelands
Cape Weaver The woven, oval nests you see hanging from trees around Howard Centre and the canal path are of this species. Some are in small colonies and some very large, but all the nests are woven by the male only. He will build many nests and will solicit females by hanging upside down from the nest, continually singing and quivering his wings. If he is a successful male he will be totally promiscuous by taking on up to seven females in a season. When his mating job is done he then leaves the females to get on with the job of incubating the eggs and rearing the young alone. After all, he's probably too exhausted after servicing so many mates to even think of family rearing. The answer to this question is a resounding yes. The law governing fraud is clearly dealt with in a high profile case in which two company directors of LeisureNet were prosecuted for non-disclosure and the Supreme Court adopted the following definition of fraud. “Fraud consists in unlawfully making, with the intent to defraud, a misrepresentation which causes actual prejudice or which is potentially prejudicial to another.” A misrepresentation may consist of an actual statement which is false or it may amount to a failure to disclose certain facts which were known with the intent to derive a clear benefit from non-disclosure. Now why on earth would I be raising the Lance Armstrong matter you may ask? With winter coming, now would be the time for all sellers to get their homes in tip-top condition to ensure the best possible price. Although the market is still buoyant there are buyers who specifically choose this time of the year to buy. With the winter rains in the offing, defects such as leaking roofs, flooding and rising damp which are not visible during summer present themselves. As agents we have a responsibility to ask sellers about matters that may impact upon the sale and the value of the property and disclose these to prospective purchasers. Sellers are often not aware of defects and cannot be held responsible for items that they could not have been aware of. That is why winter is a good time for getting the home in order. Winter also brings life back into the garden with those wonderful winter flowering shrubs and bulbs. It greens up those dry lawns and hedges. There is no doubt that homes that present well remain sought-after by buyers. So this winter get your home looking good, get all the repairs done, get your gardens tended and you may just be surprised at how quickly we can find you a willing buyer.

“Our Journey has only just begun” Clyde Pinelands AFC is here to stay Established in 1898 Clyde Pinelands at 115 years old, is the oldest non amalgamated football club in South Africa. The club has won every single amateur title available in the Western Cape, as well as the National Club Championship, twice in the 1970's. The club has reached the quarter finals of the South African ‘FA CUP’ on two occasions, knocking out Premier League opposition along the way. An ex-member played in the Bafana Bafana squad in the 2010 World Cup, and Clyde Pinelands AFC supplied New York Cosmos with their first coach, Eddie Firmani, who coached the likes of Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and Johan Cryff while there. Household names like Gary France, Colin Gie, the Roslee brothers, Rory Farrell (now Principle of Pinehurst) 9:47 PM Morne Pillay are but a few who have and donned the Clyde colours. At present the club serves all social economic groups, all racial facets and both genders. The club has always been a target for thieves as it is extremely

easy to access, being positioned at the very end of Ringwood Drive. After successful negotiations with local Council the clubhouse has now been almost completely repaired and the council has supplied 24 hr security, along with a brand new “A” pitch. Negotiations will hopefully lead to council maintaining and managing the fields, easing the past financial burden of having to water and cut the grass which is an extremely costly exercise. Clyde Pinelands is now partnering with the City to revive this great club. There will be a relaunch of “the new and improved” Clyde Pinelands shortly, where a day will be put aside to celebrate our new look. Hopefully the local community will support the Clyde Pinelands AFC effort. Radio Good Hope will broadcast live on the day, from the facility, in the interest of bringing positive exposure and sponsorship which the club deserves. by Craig Furlong, Chairman / PRO Clyde Pinelands Association Football Club est.1898
Neighbourhood Watch Pinelands Neighbourhood Watch will be holding their public meeting on 4 April at the Pinelands Library Hall at 7pm for 7:30pm. Members can meet each other and the staff of the local police station. The neighbourhood watch publishes a weekly crime update highlighting areas of increased crime in Pinelands, and urges us all to be sensible in keeping ourselves and our property safe: • Make sure your home is secure before leaving for work in the morning and at night before going to bed. • Do not leave upstairs windows open thinking they are safe from intruders. • Do not leave computers or cell phones in plain sight, especially at night when open curtains and bright lights inside give a would be thief all the information they need. • Make sure all valuables are locked in the car boot and not left as pure temptation on the back seat. • Inform your neighbours and the local authorities of any suspicious behaviour in your area. • Join Pinelands Neighbourhood Watch to get the regular updates about the criminal activity in your area. BY US Above: Evan Wrensch with his figure skating coach Dantin Broodryk after the competition, in the Hague. Evan Wrensch who featured in our February edition of the Muse competed successfully in his section at the Netherlands figure skating competition earlier this year. His achievement has been recognised and he has been sponsored to go with the South African team for the new International Skating Union (ISU) World Development Trophy, training and competition in Manila in the Philippines in April. Of his trip to the Netherlands, which was his first overseas adventure, he says it was definitely the experience of a lifetime, where he met world champion skaters Carolina Costner and Brian Joubert. Both Evan and his mother enjoyed the cleanliness of Holland and found that travelling to and from the rink on the trams was very efficient and also allowed them to do some sightseeing. They visited Madurodam where one can see 1:25 miniature replicas of famous castles and buildings in the Netherlands. A bonus at the competition rink was an indoor ski slope where Evan was able to do some snow boarding, and on the way home there was snow in Amsterdam — a trip that had it all. Dantin Broodryk, Evan's figure skating coach, has just returned from the World Championships in Finland where his team was placed 18th in the short routine and 19th overall. A great result for South Africa.

UNLAWFUL ALTERATIONS AND THE VOETSTOOTS CLAUSE
What recourse do you have against the seller for non-disclosure of unauthorized improvements or if the property cannot lawfully be used because it doesn’t comply with building regulations? A recent court verdict held that a purchaser of residential property is always entitled to assume that it has been built “in compliance with all statutory requirements and that it can be used to its full extent.” Moreover, a voetstoots clause (which means that you buy the house as is, with all obvious and hidden defects) only covers defects of a physical nature. So the seller was held liable for the buyer’s losses.

for a couple of minutes to warm up the muscles, followed by 20 seconds of intense cycling — going all out, then a couple of minutes to cool down. Doing this three times a week for four weeks improved his insulin sensitivity. Total exercise time was three minutes intense exercise a week, interspersed with six minutes of gentle cycling.

Our response to exercise
Boot camps started gaining popularity around 2005, and are a form of group exercise, sometimes including military personnel, sometimes done in open air parks, including hikes, and providing a social team work exercise effort. They are aimed at not only increasing physical fitness, and weight loss, but improving mental health too. Boot camps can be designed for both men and women, for the fit and not so fit, and have been gaining popularity among those who are a bit jaded with regular gym exercise.
What is 'HIT'
A report on High Intensity Training was recently aired on a BBC TV Horizon program by Michael Mosley, a trained medical doctor turned journalist. He completed a four week exercise program in which he exercised intensely for three minutes a week and found a decrease in his insulin sensitivity — something important to him as diabetes runs in his family.

The HIT program for Michael Mosley involved cycling slowly on an exercise bike
Genetics play a large role in how we react to exercise and not all of us can reach the same heady heights of aerobic fitness as the accomplished Olympic athletes. There is also the continual complaint about the lack of time for gym training, age and time excuses and medical conditions, that may preclude many of us from doing long distance endurance training. Maybe HIT is the one for you. Although it may not increase aerobic fitness, there are other benefits. Check with your doctor before embarking on a new exercise program.

South Africa has the second highest incidence of skin cancer in the world after Australia. The World Health Organization reports two to three million non-melanoma skin cancers and approximately 132 000 malignant melanomas globally every year. Most deaths from skin cancer can be prevented by following easy skin cancer prevention methods.

Artificial and natural UVA pose the same risk
Sunbeds and tanning booths are not safe as they deliver concentrated UVA radiation, aging the skin and increasing the risk of developing skin cancer. Professor Werner Sinclair, a dermatologist associated with the University of the Free State says “In general, one can state that the use of an artificial tanning booth will double the melanoma risk of any particular individual."

prostate cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer in men over 50. This makes skin cancer the most common type of cancer in men over 50. Watch out for those scalps too!
CANSA ADVOCATES THE FOLLOWING TO REDUCE YOUR SKIN CANCER RISK
• Avoid direct sunlight between 10am and 3pm when the sun’s rays are most dangerous. Stay in shade or under an umbrella as much as possible.
• UV rays are not the same as heat. You can get overexposed even in cool weather — so take care on windy or overcast days. • Cover up by wearing densely-woven hats with wide brims and loosefitting clothes, made of tightlywoven, fabric that is cool, but will block out harmful UV rays. Look out for UV protective swimsuits and beach wear bearing the Cansa Seal of Recognition, as UV radiation can penetrate fabric. • Always apply sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of a minimum of 20 and not higher than 50, to all exposed skin areas. Reapply regularly, at least every two hours. Be sun smart and go under cover whenever possible while out in the sun. • Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses with a UV protection rating of UV400. • Use lip balm with a minimum of SPF 20 and apply regularly. • Avoid sunlamps and tanning parlours. • Take special care to protect children. Babies younger than one year should never be exposed to direct sunlight. • Check your skin regularly for any changes, unusual marks or moles. An annual medical examination should include a skin check. Ask a friend to check your back and the back of your legs for spots or changes you may not notice yourself. The flu season is fast approaching. We all know the symptoms of flu — runny nose, body aches, chills, cough, sore throat and sometimes a fever to go with it all, but what can we do about it? What if you get the flu?
• Get some bed rest • Avoid contact with members of your family who are still well to prevent the spread of the virus • Drink plenty of water to make sure you don't become dehydrated. • Treat symptoms with pharmacy remedies to keep you comfortable. • If you are at high risk, such as being pregnant, or you have a medical condition like asthma or diabetes or heart disease call your doctor who may give you antiviral medication.
The best way to avoid the flu
The first line of defence is the flu vaccine, which is formulated each year by scientists working with the a variety of strains of the virus to prepare a vaccine that will stimulate your body to produce antibodies to the flu virus. It is not always 100% effective but still remains your best form of prevention.
How to avoid the spread of the flu? Always cough or sneeze into a tissue and throw it away immediately. Wash your hands regularly. The virus is more likely to be spread by direct contact, but it may still survive on surfaces for a short amount of time. Keep kitchen tops and utensils clean by washing frequently or wiping down with a dilute solution of bleach.
Remember to eat healthy foods that help in your fight against viral infections, especially foods rich in vitamin C such as guavas, strawberries, lemons, oranges, blackberries, paw paw, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli. See www.cdc.gov/flu/antivirals

Ask the Principal
Healthy Eating By Carol Booth Principal of Cannons Creek Independent School
It all starts at home
Eating the correct food is becoming quite an issue for our children and the number of children who do not eat vegetables at all is on the increase. Parents are giving their children too much say in what should be eaten at meal times and the child does not make an informed decision. This training starts when they are very young. As soon as children are able to eat solids, we need to be serving them food that we intend to put on the table for the rest of their 'stay’' with you.
Tempting take-aways
It is important to eat healthy foods and to make the correct choices when standing at the grocery store. In the modern world, we are so tempted to purchase ‘ready to go’ food. Yet it is these foods that are not always the best choice to make.
Fruit and vegetables
As parents we should attempt to use as much fresh vegetables as possible. We should educate our children to taste each vegetable before saying that they do not like it. One of our aims is to ensure that when they eat out at a restaurant, they are able to eat the food that is offered. At some stage our children will sleep over at a friend’s home and it is here that they cannot instruct the host to make the food of their choice. In Grades 4 to 7, children go
www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za
on school camps where they are fed meals that are generally common place, yet the number of children who won’t eat the food provided is increasing. When asked what they eat at home many list potato crisps and coke as the first two!
Sugar, sugar, sugar
Too many homes provide their children with cooldrinks that are not healthy for their children and have far too much sugar. Children become overweight, and we as parents need to acknowledge who is feeding them the incorrect food. We are the enablers. The best thing to put onto the dining room table is water — add some mint and lemon to it. It not only looks refreshing but tastes good. Aim to change your children’s drinking habits and to make the fizzy drinks on offer a treat that is given when going out. If we do not purchase it, it will not be in the fridge for them to drink.
Fruit and vegetables
Another thing we should train our children to eat is fruit. Fruit is an excellent food choice to add into the lunch box and yet very few children are given this. There are so many choices available to us. Fruit is also a wonderful food to eat between meals instead of biscuits and cake.
Morning mathematics
To allow our children to dictate their meal choice is to give them the power they are
far too young to exercise. It is best to provide our children with meals at the same time each day. Every day should start with a healthy breakfast. The modern trend is to go without breakfast. This has a huge impact on the child. When they come to school the first subject they do is usually Mathematics. As the hour moves on, all they can think about is their tummy displaying hunger pains. Their mind moves to the food in their lunchbox instead of concentrating of the subject taught.
Healthy snacks
Parents and teachers need to train their children to eat a snack at tea break and not the whole lunch box. If they are so hungry that they finish all the food that has been provided, then we should put in larger 'meals'. It is important that they have some food at lunch time as many of our children play sport in the afternoon which would mean that if they eat at 10:15 in the morning, it is 9 hours till they eat their supper. By the time they get home they are starving and instead of waiting for supper, they raid the fridge and fill themselves up with incorrect food choices.
Your challenge
Take up the challenge — in providing the correct food at each meal, we are able to ensure that our children are able to function at their best.

CAPE TOWN MAYOR Cape Town Mayor, and Pinelander, Ms Patricia de Lille has fought tough battles of her own, along with championing causes surrounding inequality and corruption. A feisty personality with boundless energy and concern for others, Patricia chose to live in Pinelands because it is central, and she chose a house full of character that would be suitable for her later years. All images supplied by the Mayor's office. Photographer Bruce Sutherland
The Mayor at Home
In Pinelands, Ms de Lille is able to relax and recharge for the next challenging day in the political and service provision arena. She lives with her husband Edwin who loves to cook, and her son Allistair. The four huskies are considered part of the family and are loved as the babies of the family. The Mayor has a married daughter and three grandchildren, who stay in George.
Why Pinelands?
"It took a good year of looking before finding the ideal home. I fell in love with the lead crystal windows and the open feeling of the home which would suit my family and my beloved huskies. I have always had dogs and usually more than one dog at a time. The house has a large open sun room where I can do my ironing and still appreciate the garden. Pinelands is close to my oft travelled routes — Parliament and the airport — very convenient." When asked if there are any improvements that the mayor would like to see in Pinelands, the reply was quick and firm — "Pinelands has a very capable councillor in Brian Watkyns."
The Mayor's breakfast recipe
The mayor admits to starting slowly in the morning, waking to the 6am news

and weather reports. Then she takes great pleasure in greeting her loving huskies and having a morning chat with them — insisting that the phone is not switched on till the work day begins. Patricia de Lille believes in a good healthy breakfast to start the day and enjoys her own special mixture of soya yoghurt, blackberries, 2 spoons of pomegranate seeds and mixed seeds such as pumpkin and sesame seeds. Her busy schedule means that the breakfast bowl goes in the car, as do the body guards, and is eaten with her vitamin supplements on the way to work. The bowl finds its way home later!
The Mayor and her body guards
Well, being driven to work not having to worry about safety has its advantages, especially as there are so many evening meetings — but come the weekends Ms de Lille likes to have her space, and if she can, she will take her old friend Auntie Helen for a drive, because the mayor loves to drive. Talking about driving, our Mayor has a golf handicap of 18 and of course no shortage of golf courses in the area for her to practice her swing.

Mayor, and often problems arise which have to be dealt with urgently because people cannot wait for help. Patricia doesn't like to procrastinate or postpone until tomorrow, what can be done today. The position is a full time one going from Monday through to Sunday. She has a strict policy of never signing for anything unless she understands what it is about, and she therefore has great support from her Mayoral officials who are happy to receive calls late at night to explain policies and procedures, that are in the planning process to become law. She is very grateful too for the support of her spiritual advisor Archbishop Njongo Ndungane, founder and chair of the African Monitor, an organisation that monitors funding for the poorer communities. Interspersed between running the City which employs 26 000 workers, fund raising efforts and diplomatic duties, Patricia de Lille is still fervent in seeing the questionable arms deal taken to court.
expression as aggression, but this is not so. How men treat women is also important to Patricia. She warns mothers not to encourage their sons in the patriarchal ways that society seems to revere — "your sons' wives will not thank you if your son expects women to do everything, without his help and support."
The determined Mayor
Patricia de Lille grew up with 6 sisters and one brother. The family has always had an interest in politics, so it is no surprise that Patricia has risen to the position of Mayor of a multimillion city. She is firm in her beliefs and convictions and not afraid to have her say. Some have mistaken her forthright
The Mayor's good friend Maria
The Mayor's eyes twinkle as she tells the story of former springbok Rugby player Chester Williams falling in love with her good friend Maria Robson. Patricia recalls how she encouraged a shy Chester to "ask her", when it was quite obvious to everyone how they felt about each other. When Chester and Maria married in a small ceremony in 2002, Patricia was the Master of Ceremonies, able to offer sage advice, and she asked Chester and Maria to make her the God Mother to their first child — well what a bonus when Chester and Maria's twins were born... two God children to watch over — Chloe and Matthew.
The Mayor's favourite holiday destination
Beaches, sunshine, self catering in Mauritius — that's a favourite for Patricia de Lille. Getting to know the locals and eat their delicious seafood — just the perfect way to relax and recharge for the year ahead.
Alderman Patricia de Lille, and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.
A Journey of 'firsts'
Born in Beaufort West in 1951 Mayor de Lille remembers events of a Youth Day protest that sparked her decision to enter politics. As a laboratory technician at a Plascon paint factory she became involved with the South African Chemical Workers Union. So began a series of firsts for women in South Africa. Mayor De Lille worked her way up to the National Vice President of the National Council of Trade Unions — the highest position for a woman at the time. After becoming a member of parliament in 1994, serving on various portfolio committees including health, minerals, energy, trade and industry, communications, and code of ethics, Ms de Lille scored another first for women by forming her own political party, the Independent Democrats in 2003. In 2006 she was the first woman to be recognised as an Honorary Colonel in the South African Defence Force. Ms De Lille is also a patron of many charities, particularly those supporting the AIDS community, such as Nazareth House where she sponsored a youngster called Patricia, and brought her to Pinelands at the weekends to enjoy a normal family life. Nelson Mandela described Patricia as "a strong, principled woman" and his "favourite opposition politician.” For more see www.smartcape.org.za.
Reaffirming the values by which the City is governed and (the five pillars) upon which the City is built - the opportunity city, the safe city, the caring city, the inclusive city and the well-run city,” the City of Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille has announced the declaration of 2013 as the year in which the City plans to honour former president Nelson Mandela. www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za

How do you experience the shopping mall? The magnificent mall
Enter the brightly lit, magnificently mirrored corridors of any large shopping mall, and all of one’s senses are immediately swamped by a kaleidoscope of architectural brilliance, sweet-scented aromas, pristinely tiled floors, gleaming surfaces of unfathomable lengths and sheer, unabashed decadence.
The 'experience economy'
In the fifty-six years since the invention of the shopping mall by Austrian architect Victor Gruen, the ubiquitous mall has been forced to reinvent itself in the face of the new ‘experience economy’. In its battle for survival and relevance, what was once a convenient and simplistic collection of shops has mutated into a complex assortment of lifestyle, amusement and experiential outlets.
Dealing with the recession
Shopping mall owners have engaged with psychologists, scientists, behavioural therapists, retail experts and trend analysts to formulate a more effective recipe for enticing consumers to part with their hardearned cash. Over time, shopping mall owners have developed a quiver full of tricks aimed at making the consumer linger longer, in food courts, cinemas, play areas, ice-rinks and bowling alleys.
By Sue Torr Director at Crue Consulting
Human nature
simpler designs, cleaner lines, masculine wood or metal. For the first time in history, men have started choosing and purchasing their own underwear, so it is not by accident that fashion houses such as Gap and Hilton Weiner display their stock on large tables in the middle of their shops. Research shows that a communal table makes customers feel at home and sub-consciously ‘invites’ them to pick up the clothes.
Designs that appeal to men
If airports are the benchmark in safety and security, shopping malls could quite easily be considered their antithesis, because the presence of formal security makes customers feel watched and threatened. As a subtle antidote for shoplifting, many department stores have introduced the concept of ‘greeters’ at the store entrance. Trading on the psychology that people generally won’t steal from nice people, it’s been proven that a friendly smile and warm greeting reduces theft in the shop.
There is deliberate intelligence behind every phase of the consumer experience, starting as early as the car park experience. Research shows that customers prefer entering a shopping mall from top to bottom, which is why many malls have their parking areas above the shops. It’s now also understood that customers tend to walk faster past banks because there’s nothing exciting to look at, and mall owners know never to put anything meaningful in close proximity to a boring bank.
Subtle security
Mall décor is generally more feminineinspired in support of what marketresearchers irrefutably know — that women shop for longer than men. Women migrate towards shops with high visual energy and excessive choice, but mall landlords know that men are attracted by
The shift of power
No longer content with the mundane mayhem of the mass mall trawl, the demands of the new consumer have ousted the ‘laidback landlord’ and ushered in the ‘experience entrepreneur’ as retail ring-leader and master of the mall.

Out and About
I
n the true spirit of "local is lekker" we explored some of the play parks in Pinelands and Thornton, and discovered that the early planners tried to provide a bit of variety at each park. By far the most well looked-after is the Central Square Remembrance Park, where we were pleased to see young families taking advantage of the 'kids gear', dog walkers, a group of picnickers and some students studying on the benches. Another very popular gathering point was the field below the cricket oval. Besides being the venue for keen runners and cricket bowling practice, the field is frequented by dogs and their owners having a marvellous evening social. We are told there is a concerned resident who faithfully cleans up around this field and for this we are grateful! See if you have been to the parks we show here and enjoy the ride!
PINELANDS REMEMBRANCE PARK AT CENTRAL SQUARE
Parks in Thornton and Pinelands We gave nicknames to the parks as we went along and counted a couple of 'igloo' parks, and one or two with witches hats or round-abouts. Thornton park on the corner of Rifle Range and Tamboetie had an interesting groot trek wagon complete with the oxen to pull it along. One of our favourites was the one between Mimosa and Poplar roads in Pinelands which has a
usable picnic table. The play parks vary in their condition, some have been repaired and painted by local residents and some still have some sort of watering system keeping the grass green in summer. The canal is a popular place to exercise the dogs or simply have a stroll in the cool summer evenings. Shown on the cover of this issue is Coronation Park off Elizabeth Avenue.

food from the heart
By Heleen Meyer Pinelands resident, foodie and author of Food from the heart.
Hot cross bun French toast Serves 6
1. Beat together eggs, water and a pinch of salt in a shallow dish. 2. Heat a thin layer of oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Dip hot cross bun halves into the egg mixture and fry on both sides until golden brown and cooked. 3. Repeat with remaining hot cross buns and keep them warm. 4. Serve hot with bacon, dollops of crème fraîche or yoghurt, and drizzled with honey or maple syrup. Add fresh fruit as suggested above, if preferred.
Tips
1. Substitute the hot cross buns with croissants or thick slices of day old brown bread. 2. If you prefer it extra spicy, add 2,5 ml (½ tsp) ground cinnamon, mixed spice or allspice to the egg mixture. 3. If the hot cross buns are very thick, you can slice them into 3 slices.

6 eggs 15 ml (1 tbsp) water per egg pinch of salt oil for frying 6 hot cross buns, halved 250 g streaky bacon, fried until crispy 125 ml (½ cup) crème fraîche or plain yoghurt 100 ml honey or maple syrup fresh fruit such as berries, bananas, pear or peaches are delicious
The best breakfast I
almost can’t believe that when you read this issue and make this recipe it will soon be school holidays (or may just as well be by now)! That means the first quarter of 2013 is behind us. Don’t despair, there are positives to that as well. We start enjoying different foods and by now it’s hot cross bun season — tempting you to buy a steaming hot dozen from an oven.
and honey. The next day they are perfect for toasting, but after that they are just not the same anymore. So what do you do with them then? You make French toast of course, and the best results are indeed achieved with two-day old buns. It makes for great holiday fun and a yummy brunch idea too.
I look forward to hot cross bun-time every year and have experimented making different dishes with these flavourful bakes as well. Bread and butter pudding is one delicious option — which brings me to this breakfast idea. Hot cross buns are great when they are hot and fresh from the oven, served with butter, cheese
Serve them with bacon (the eggs are in there already) and a drizzle of honey or maple syrup. Add a good dollop of plain yoghurt or crème fraîche and top with fresh fruit. Berries are a perfect combination with these flavours. If you’re not a fan of sweet and savoury together, just stick to bacon and toss a few baby tomatoes in the pan, serve with a handful of rocket and a good grind of black pepper. I’m hungry already.
