PREPARING FOR LIFE IN UNCERTAIN TIMES

How the process of education has changed over time! A few centuries ago, getting an education was the exclusive reserve of the rich and powerful. The most valuable knowledge was locked up in books, often written in Latin and kept in closed libraries, accessible only to the chosen few. It's probably why scientific and technological progress was so slow for so many millennia — so few people were allowed to study and build on the ideas. With the emergence of formal and compulsory schooling and open public libraries, and fuelled by a growing population, the sharing and mixing of knowledge contributed to the industrial revolution in the late 18th century. The 'common man' was now able to take part in invention and to develop new ideas and products and create wealth for himself. The later emancipation of women would double the pool of brain power. When the Internet explosion of the 1990's happened, more than making a rapidly growing body of knowledge available to the masses, it allowed anyone to add to it — and how we have added! On the positive side, it has enabled almost anyone to find out about almost anything… instantly. You can study and self-learn a new discipline at almost no financial cost. I believe this mass mixing of ideas has been behind the exponential rise in scientific and social developments in recent times. On the downside a lot of poor and incorrect information has been added to the pool, so finding and discerning what is reliable and useful has become an an essential skill. With the uncertainty of global economies and job markets, simply preparing for a single career direction has become very risky. The children of today need to prepare to be flexible and adaptable. Some of today's professions may be extinct by the time young learners leave school, indeed the jobs they fill have probably not been invented yet! or various reasons this bird has a bad reputation, especially if you’ve inadvertently parked your car under their night roosts! Introduced into Cape Town by Cecil Rhodes, this bird has been exceptionally successful, having extended its range in South Africa and has now been reported in Namibia. A first glance shows a dark drab coloured bird but on close inspection, in bright sunlight the plumage reveals varied iridescent greens, blues and oily black overlaid with white spots. In breeding plumage the throat feathers become elongate and are highly prized by fly fishermen in tying their flies. Their song is a warbled mixture of squeaky notes but includes lots of mimicry. It is the obligation of the seller/landlord to provide these certificates. The owner can either ask the Estate Agents to provide names of electricians, plumbers or gas installers or make use of someone they know. Whatever you decide it is important that you check that these providers are registered with the relevant authorities. If a property incurs any damage as a result of an electrical fault the insurance company will not pay out any claim unless the homeowner can provide them with a valid electrical certificate. If any tenant suffers harm as a result of a faulty electric fence or faulty electrical system they would have a claim against the homeowner. What is not clearly understood by owners and buyers is that electricians do not have to guarantee that the electrical system is in working order, only that it is safe and that a test certificate

must accompany the ECOC. The most common question about plumbing certificates is what a plumber is expected to inspect. A common check would be that storm water is NOT discharged into the sewerage system. We often find that pools are backwashed into the sewerage system and that during alterations water from gutters is illegally diverted into drains. Another would be that the water meter registers only when the tap is open and stops completely when closed. This is to control water wastage from homes. Sellers must ensure that the plumber who issues the certificate is qualified to do so. For electric fence certificates, what happens when a Sectional Title or Security Estate property is sold? Firstly, only certified installers may erect fences. There are currently only about 300 accredited installers in the country. Secondly, the responsibility lies with the Body Corporate or Homeowners Association to provide these certificates not with the individual owners. More and more service providers are starting to offer the â&#x20AC;&#x153;full packageâ&#x20AC;? and this could be to an ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advantage, both for convenience and for accreditation, as it would be easier to establish if a single provider is suitablly qualified and registered with the relevant authorities.

Diamond Anniversary for Colin and Barbara Murch Congratulations to Colin and Barbara Murch who were married in Gosport, Hampshire on 19 September 1953. After meeting at a Royal Navy Dance when Barbara was 19, they developed their relationship through letter writing while Colin was stationed in Egypt, serving in the RAF. Their son Christopher, who was born in Cornwall, was delighted when the family moved to South Africa in 1968 — they all enjoyed the sunny weather. Beach cleanup by the scouts We congratulate 10 year old cub scout, Sara Beere who organised a successful beach clean up at Milnerton as part of the requirements for her Leaping Wolf Badge, which is a challenge like the Springbok badge, but for the younger cubs. The clean-up was a huge success, helped along by good weather and a team of helpers who worked hard and had great fun on the beach. Capital Gains Tax is something that some of us have to worry about... For most individuals CGT is seldom an issue. The maximum effective rate of CGT for individuals is 13.3% of any Capital Gain. The event that usually triggers this tax is the sale of immovable property. For your primary residence, the Capital Gain must be more than R2 million before taxation occurs. Camp Sonshine AFricA

he Camp Sonshine Africa scholarships were initiated to provide scholarships for primary school, because without a good primary school foundation the children who need the high school scholarships that are available are mostly unable to cope in these schools. The Camp Sonshine Africa scholarship program was set up to pay for children from disadvantaged local communities to attend Pinelands North Primary School. The program is holistic in approach, providing funding and ensuring that children and their families have everything they need in order to ensure their long-term success. Needs vary from child to child, but could include transport to and from school, daily assistance with homework, educational assessments, general health assessments, extra lessons and attendance at school meetings. Once a child reaches high school age, Camp Sonshine assists the children and their family in finding high school scholarships, or failing that, they continue to assist them through high school. This fund also assists children who have fallen behind in their education and are not up to grade level. They are given

Kumon Maths and English lessons, which help them to fill in the missing pieces and allow them to reach grade level. Kumon is not a grade based system, but rather builds on existing knowledge (no matter how small). The aim of Kumon is to unleash each child's potential to love learning, by improving confidence and self-esteem, and encouraging self-discipline and a good daily study habit. There is no failing in Kumon, because each child works at his or her own carefully monitored level. Camp Sonshine Africa is a registered NPO (# 075-041) and has a Trust Fund set up specifically for education. s Head of Sport at Cannons Creek Primary School, Katelynn shared her experience of how to get great results from a small school, when competing with larger more established schools. The Discovery Vitality Summit was held in Johannesburg from 15th to 17th August, and Katelynn was an invited speaker and panel participant on the role of the coach in a dynamic school environment. Katelynn was in good company, surrounded by legends in the

The coach needs to be adaptable, willing to learn, optimistic and driven, passionate, and relevant. A four year old wants to see the coach getting down on the ground and getting dirty with them, they need to see the coach having fun through sport so that they can relate sport to fun. There needs to be a great deal of trust between the coaches, the children and the parents".

Inclusive Ambleside education APPROACH One of the principles that Inclusive education espouses is that all children can learn. Barriers to learning could be contextual, impairments or negative attitudes towards what makes people different. Even the curriculum can be a barrier because of the content, the language used and how the learning is assessed. Understanding a child’s learning style is one step towards supporting their educational needs. Focusing on the child’s strengths is important — what are they able to do, what can they do well and what is their particular passion? Differentiation and adapting the teaching and the delivery of the curriculum means that you are trying to help the curriculum fit the child, not making the child fit the system. In many ways it is unrecognisable from its apartheid-era predecessor, particularly when it comes to fees. At the top end of the price range, parents can now expect to pay as much for top quality daycare with professional staff and small classes, as they would for a B.Comm degree at UCT. In the mid-range, affordable daycare is considerably more costly than a B.Comm or BA degree at NMMU or UNISA.

Ann Morton in Finland In keeping with the theme of education in this edition, Ann Morton, Principal of Pinelands North Primary School (PNPS) tells us about some of her travel opportunities, supported by FEDSAS, that enable local educators to investigate successful teaching methods that could be implemented in South Africa.

A love for teaching

Dynamic personality Ann Morton has been Principal of PNPS since 1997 and comments that it is unusual for a co-ed school to have a woman principal. Teaching is her first love — she says the school community is amazing, and she would not change her job for the world.

Thinking skills as a subject

The school governing body supports Ann in her quest for continual improvement in the school, looking to include her ideas gained from international travel. One such trip was to New Zealand where she found a school which concentrates on thinking skills, rather than rote learning. They model their ideas on ‘thinking gurus’ like Edward de Bono and his six “thinking hats”. The implementation of thinking skills as a subject is helpful for all students and especially for gifted students who can learn to utilise their high IQ with effective thinking skills.

Looking at education in Finland

Anne's most recent trip in April this year was to Finland with a group of 20 educators from South Africa to study the very successful Finish education system. Anne was the only Western Cape Principal to attend this event, arranged by FEDSAS, the national representative organisation for school governing bodies. The Finish government ensures that

The education system is guided by values such as trust, respect, appreciation of learning, tolerance of individuality, fairness, a sense of community responsibility and cooperation. There is a great deal of respect for teachers and more trust between learners, teachers, parents and the community as a whole. Teaching is a sought after profession in Finland with only 10% of applicants being accepted. Kinder-garden teachers have bachelor degrees. Class and subject teachers have masters degrees. Vocational trainers have degrees with 3 years experience in the industry and are encouraged to have a business of their own to keep up with current trends in the field.

Children with special needs are accommodated in the regular school system as far as possible, and classes are small, with a maximum set at 25 per class. Another feature that stabilises the schooling system is the fact that the school curriculum is only changed about every 12 years and is not linked to political change.

Spring Flowers on the West Coast It was such a glorious day, when we made the impromptu decision to drive to Langebaan. The plan was to visit the Postberg reserve inside the West Coast National Park. But when we eventually got to the main gate, it seemed that the rest of Cape Town had had the same fabulous idea. Eish. That queue wasn’t going anywhere slowly, never mind fast. We gave up on that plan, and drove onwards to Langebaan, hoping to find a peaceful spot to picnic at the seashore. Haphazardly following some cars, though, we suddenly found ourselves just north of the northern entrance gate to the Park — which neither of us had ever been to. People had pulled off at the side of the road to wander amidst a most extraordinary field of flowers, OUTSIDE the park. We took some pics, and then thought — we’ve come this far, let’s go in. So we did… and ended up picnicking at the Seeberg Viewing Site — which has the most EXTRAORDINARY display of colourful flowers. It was a photographer’s HEAVEN. The quickest way to the Park from Cape Town is to follow the coastal route: take the R27 northwards, past Table View, Melkbosstrand and Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, and past the holiday resort of Grotto Bay and the fishing village of Yzerfontein.
