Peregrine Falcon

Birds in Pinelands

Few are aware that world's fastest animal is a Pinelands resident. Yes, we have two pairs of Peregrine Falcon that nest on buildings. They can often be seen sitting quietly on a ledge or at the top of a tall tree, surveying their environment. However, once they go in pursuit of their prey, such as doves and pigeons, they have been recorded swooping at an incredible 389 km/h, a world record for any creature! They can be recognised overhead by their characteristic pointed wings. Cape Town's Dr Andrew Jenkins is a world expert on Peregrines and moved the nest from the now-demolished cooling towers to a safe new ledge nearby. None of the falcons construct a nest as such: Peregrines lay their eggs on a sheltered cliff ledge but have adapted well to the window ledges that man's cities have provided. I have heard the statements above repeated PINELANDS • AGE MIX many times, the first one usually by people 2011 2001 1996 outside Pinelands and the second by local residents. I wondered whether these were myths or indeed true. So, when the Pinelands Ratepayers Association asked me to speak at their AGM, I thought I would study the census figures to answer the question. It turns out that neither statement is absolutely true! The largest age group is the 40 to 64 year olds, followed closely 0 - 19 20 - 39 40 - 64 65+ by the young adults 20 to 39 and children under 19. Only 16.6% are over 65, which PINELANDS • ETHNIC MIX White Coloured Black Asian Other is higher than the average but still the smallest group, while the proportion of young adults has jumped from 25% to 29% in the last 10 years. While racial diversity has increased substantially since 1996, we are not remarkable in that regard compared to many other suburbs across the land. We only need to look as far as our neighbours in Thornton for an example where the mix is white (19%) coloured (49%) black (26%) asian (3%) and other (3%). There were other interesting facts about 2011 2001 1996 home ownership (more rentals and less ownership), income and education that came out. See our website for more on this. After minor corrections to my regional work, my project was complete (again) and I was off to Johannesburg, feeling hopeful. The accommodation – with Patrick, the other Pinelander – was very good and after a long time of judging and much more waiting, the Special Awards came. The prize for the “Best Mathematics Project”, from the National Institute for Theoretical Physics (NITheP), was announced and I had won. Thanks to all the supervisors of the Cape Town delegation, my maths teacher and NITheP, for everything.

If you take a science subject at Pinelands High in grade eleven, you need to do something for the Science Fair. I knew that maths projects were allowed and as I enjoy maths, I chose to do one. Mine was about multi-dimensional geometry, which sounds impressive but is really just applying principles learnt throughout school. The project was called Cubes & Spheres, and focused on finding ratios and patterns in these shapes, which I could represent as formulae or functions, and potentially expand to include more than three dimensions – the most interesting part. At school my mark wasn’t great but it was just enough to give me a spot at the regional expo. Not expecting to do particularly well, but improving my project as much as I could all the same, I chose to go. Everything went well and to my surprise I was awarded a gold medal, giving me the opportunity to go to the national expo in Johannesburg with about 30 other Cape Town medallists. The prospect of my work being scrutinised by the country’s experts was fantastic and, hoping it would be worth half the school holidays, I decided to take part.

Pinelander Amy Greener, a grade 9 student at the International School of Cape Town, once again achieved a Gold Medal at the Regional Science Expo in August this year and became the first person at Regional level to be awarded a gold medal for 3 consecutive years. She was also honoured with an award by the Kirstenbosch Botanical Society for her project. Amy joined 29 other students from the Western Cape to attend the South African International Science Fair in Johannesburg during the September holidays, and was thrilled to be awarded a Gold Medal. In her project entitled Can plants cope with changing carbon dioxide levels? Amy has shown that plants have been able to adjust (so far) to the increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and has highlighted the importance of mountain reserves as the levels of carbon dioxide decrease with altitude. It has been shown that the levels of carbon dioxide on Table Mountain are equivalent to what they were at sea level 80 years ago. Amy’s project has also been selected for consideration to enter into an International Science Expo overseas early next year.

Pinehurst Primary School POP initiative At the beginning of the year Pinehurst Primary School started a Programme to promote and encourage community outreach. The club was named P.O.P – Pinehurst Outreach Programme. Grade 5 to Grade 7 pupils, who joined, volunteer their time and skills to assist various charities throughout the year. In the first term they helped Lerato’s Hope with their food drive outside the Spar. In the second term volunteers went to the children’s home next door to assist them with homework classes. The club also organised a Hockey clinic, on the school field, for the children of Camp Sonshine. Throughout the year P.O.P will be involved with various projects to assist Pinehurst’s

Top ranking for Cannons Creek u13 boys’ waterpolo team The Cannons Creek U13 boys’ waterpolo team has just made waterpolo history for their school. As a first-time entrant into the prestigious SACS Waterpolo Tournament in early October 2013, which showcases the talent of the top twenty schools in South Africa, the Cannons Creek boys’ team was somewhat apprehensive to be taking on the strongest teams in the country. But with well-planned pre-season training and excellent coaching by top SA waterpolo player, Devon Card, together with Craig Torr of Crue Sports Trust, the Cannons Creek team played brilliant waterpolo and took 3rd place overall in the tournament. “The success of this team is phenomenal,” says coach, Devon Card. “We only managed to field 9 players, and only four of them were actually under 13. The rest were younger, with the youngest player being in Grade 4. The school doesn’t have its own pool, but thanks to the ongoing generosity of Pinelands High School, we were able to prepare our boys properly in their pool.” The Cannons Creek boys’ team took on the likes of Grey (PE), SACS, Bishops, St Johns and Durban Prep, undoubtedly the strongest schools that South Africa has to offer, and

are now comfortably ranked as the number three team in SA and the second strongest in the province. “The boys prepared hard, they were focused, they never doubted their ability and they displayed true sportsmanship both in and out of the pool. Their success is the result of months of preparation, commitment and team work,” says Devon Card. Cannons Creek, in partnership with Crue Sports Trust, believes that it is challenging traditional models of schools sport coaching and paving the way for more innovative coaching solutions. “Through community partnerships and the effective pooling of resources, we believe that we are broadening the access of sport and increasing the size of the talent pool. Although we are a relatively small school, we have instilled in our children the belief that anything is possible. Our boys proved that last weekend,” says Carol Booth, principal of Cannons Creek Junior School. Of the nine Cannons Creek boys who participated in the SACS Waterpolo Tournament, three of them have been

Record number of provincial players for Pinelands! Waterpolo is the fastest growing summer sport in South Africa, and a record number of 15 Pinelands school children have been selected to represent provincial teams this year. These children will all be travelling to East London in early December where they will represent their province at the annual SA Schools Waterpolo Tournament.

Craig Torr of Crue Sports Trust (CST), a not− for−profit organisation that coaches and mentors the youth in Pinelands using sport as a platform for leadership development. The training programme includes early morning swimming fitness at the Old Mutual gym, strength training sessions in the Pinelands High School gym, white board sessions and technical training. Once water temperatures rise to more comfortable levels, the children then move their training to the outdoor pools at Pinelands High School and Pinelands

North. Devon Card, head waterpolo coach for CST who currently plays waterpolo for South Africa, designed the training programme, and monitored each child’s fitness and performance over the period of the programme. Our aim is to develop young leaders who understand the value of working hard to achieve their goals, show commitment to a task and who know the importance of giving back to our community. The results speak for themselves. Two children from Pinehurst Primary were selected to represent WP U13 teams, eight children from Cannons Creek were selected to WP and Boland teams, four children from Pinelands High School were selected to WP teams and one player from Pinelands North Primary School was chosen to represent WP. “We are delighted that their hard work and dedication has been recognised and rewarded. We want these players to inspire the younger school children to keep working hard. We have impressed on them that they are now role models in the community who need to guide and mentor the younger children”, says Craig Torr. PNPS World Teachers Day and the Amazing Race

On a fairly windy Friday afternoon, the teachers of Pinelands North Primary School (PNPS) could be seen darting around Pinelands collecting clues on their Amazing Race. The PNPS PTA organised the surprise race day to say thank you to the teachers for all their hard work and dedication which truly takes place every day at the school. Six clues were placed around Pinelands. No-one realised that the teachers could move so fast when the first clue was handed out! Only after completion of all the tasks, for example, singing the school song, finishing an obstacle course or tying a reef knot, would they get their next clue. The first team back on the mat with all the tasks and crossword completed were the winners. Congratulations go to Leslie Roberts, Bev Pereira, Catherine Lowrings and Duron Wright who proved that brawn and beauty are a winning combination. The afternoon ended with tea, cake and prize giving. We are encouraged to all get together and support our teachers not only for one day but everyday.

In the October edition of the Muse we mistakenly called our Pinelander Shannon Filmer Shannon Morris. We apologise for the error and asked Shannon to tell us a bit more about her leadership of the Lions Club of Pinelands and about the HeadsUp South support group for survivors of traumatic brain injury. "The Lions Club of Pinelands have recently moved back into their clubhouse at Clyde Pinelands and are grateful to the Council for the repair work done on the building. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30pm and anyone is welcome to attend. We are a service organisation and our current projects include food donation to five different shelters, monthly bingo with

the seniors at Riverside in Thornton and collection of unwanted spectacles from local optometrists which are recycled for those who require but cannot afford them (collection boxes at McKenna and Scott and Geoff Heathcote-Marks). The Lions are also taking five children from Linawo House to a Christmas party at Intaka Island, and will be selling Christmas cakes – 1kg cake – no alcohol or icing, free delivery in the Pinelands area, for R70 each. Anyone interested in knowing more about what we do, or any of the above, please email pinelandslions50@gmail.com. HeadsUp South is a brain injury support group for survivors and their families. We meet, during school terms, on the first Thursday of the month at Vista Nova Primary School in Rondebosch. From 5:30pm until 6pm we serve refreshments and then run a session until 7:30pm. Choosing a workshop

oes your car need repair? How do you find the best motor car repair workshop for you? Here are some important issues to consider: Avoid the risk of getting taken for a ride and find the best fit for you by doing a little homework in advance. Shop around for a suitable workshop before you need repairs. Having to find somewhere when your car is on the back of a tow truck is not a good time to try to find a quality repairer. Rely on word of mouth when you start your search. Listen to what others have to say about different repair shops. Ask friends, family, and co-workers who they would recommend, then ask the workshop for references and follow them up. Almost all vehicles manufactured since the 1980’s have computerized management systems and require specific diagnostic equipment in order to fault find. Ensure that the workshop has this equipment and has access to the necessary repair data.

Check if the workshop specialises in particular brands of vehicles? Ask if the workshop has qualified technicians on site and if there is continuing staff training. What is their guarantee policy on parts and labour? Visit the premises and have a look at the amenities. If it is neat and clean it is probably a good indication of how the rest of the business is run. Don’t shop around on price alone. You are not only paying for the parts and labour but also for the technical expertise and professionalism of the technician. Three comments in closing: • When you find the right workshop and technician, stay with them. Cheap adverts for brakes or servicing often come with cheap workmanship and the final cost may well be more than you expect. • Every one of us makes a mistake occasionally. The right work shop will

stand behind their work and correct the error. They will be unhappy at the damage to their reputation and that you may not return in the future. • Be a good customer. The technician is a skilled individual and deserves respect. Make your booking well in advance so that there is no unnecessary pressure on you or the workshop and allow them enough time to do the job correctly . 

PRRA & THE 2011 CENSUS Max Schutte, editor of the Pinelands Community magazine, the Muse, presented an analysis of the 2011 Census at the meeting of the Pinelands Ratepayers and Residents Association (PRRA) AGM on 9 October 2013. The talk was titled "The Changing Face of Pinelands" and debunked some of the myths often surrounding Pinelands as a suburb. See the editorial of this edition for more detail, and www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za for the slide presentation and graphs. The PRRA exists as a watchdog for the suburb in that it follows up new building

requests, and complaints from residents, as well as many other issues. The committee is eight strong with John Berry as the chairman. Alan Dunnell and PRRA secretary Eve Dunnell have served on the committee for many years and have now decided to retire their services. The committee thanked them for their hard work. This humble young man did not expect the award as he worked towards his Springbok badge – he describes the scout project: "The 1st Pinelands Scout troop went from 21 to 25 September to do community service at SAWAS House, a retirement home situated in Pinelands. We would like people to know that as scouts we want to give back to, and help the community in any way possible. Regardless of the fact that this was for my advancement, I feel that I want to do more activities like that where we help the community. t’s that time of the year when exams are just around the corner and everyone is starting to feel the pressure. Parents often ask me what they can do to encourage their children to study and prepare for exams. Unfortunately there is no magic exam wand, just hard work and a number of common sense steps which anyone can follow:

Make a start

Now that you’ve made a start it’s important to build momentum by getting into a routine. All it takes is a week of study for one hour every evening at the same time, to start building momentum. After a week of studying you can tick off quite a few sections of work and feel good about what you have mastered. Suddenly it’s not so frightening anymore and you may even start looking forward to getting back to your studies and finishing another section.

As they say: “A job started is a job half done”. Once you’ve made a start, the challenge somehow seems less daunting. Make a start today, not tomorrow, and make sure it’s a real start. All too often we spend a week getting ourselves ready to start studying. We tidy our desk. We draw up study timetables. We go shopping to buy all the right colour highlighters We tidy the desk once again – sound familiar? We all fall into the trap of active procrastination. Stop faffing and start studying – even if it’s just for one hour – the next hour will be so much easier.

Try not to study for more than 45 minutes at a time without taking a fifteen minute break Personally, I feel it’s better to bite off chunks of work in sections rather than minutes. Select a section of work which you aim to master within the 45 minutes, before taking a 15 minute break. If you master the section before the 45 minutes are up, you get a longer break.

Start with the unknown

We all fall into the trap of starting with the work we already know. For example, the work in the front of the book is work we already studied in June and September. Rather tackle the new work first, which is more difficult to grasp, while you are fresh and not under exam pressure the night before the exams. Similarly, we often make the error of going through a section of work but leaving out any difficult or boring bits – with the intention of coming back to these sections later. Never do this. If you find these sections tough now, imagine how tough they will be when you’re tired, and running short of study time.

The dreaded cell phone

Don’t kid yourself – you can’t study and chat to your friends at the same time.

Multi-tasking when it comes to studying is a myth. Neither can you study effectively while listening to music with lyrics. I suggest you leave your phone outside the room where you’re studying. Co-ordinate your study times with your friends and chat during study breaks, comparing notes and sharing questions. Knowing that your friends are also studying is a motivating factor in itself. I suggest that you also surrender your phone at night so that your friends won’t be texting you all night denying you valuable sleep.

Over-learn

Everyone claims that if they study too far in advance they forget the work. The solution is over-learning. This entails going over and over a section of work until there is no way you can get it wrong. Only then move on to the next section of work – and then go back to the previous section again.

Reward yourself

No one can study non-stop indefinitely. We all need a break from our studies now and again. The secret is moderation. You can’t take a 45 minute break after studying 15 minutes. Once a week you need an evening off. However, you can’t take off both Friday and Saturday night. Don’t go overboard, and decide to have an all-night movie evening. The result of this is not only one night away from your studies but the whole of the next day spent sleeping as well, and it takes a full two days before you’re back at your studies again. You’ve lost the momentum which you worked so hard to build up. Finally, exam success is not about luck, it’s about hard work. Whatever your goals for this exam are, I wish you hard work and much success. 

His birthday on the 18th October was celebrated by hosting a fund raiser, where Siv was the MC. One of his favourite charities is the Tracheostomy ward at Red Cross Children's Hospital. (See Muse July 2011 The Circle of Life).

Sport is another way that Siv gives back – he raises funds through sponsorship when he does the Argus Cycle Tour which he has done twice now. He has completed the Two Oceans five times and is training for the ultramarathon. Other sports that Siv enjoys are rugby, indoor hockey, swimming and boxing.

Siv was born in Gugulethu in 1985. His mother, who was the principal at a Gugulethu school, had high hopes for her children. From their home here they moved to Langa and Siv started at the Red School, which meant by the time the family moved to Pinelands in 1994, he was familiar with the neighbourhood and did not find the move a difficult transition at all. "My hero," says Siv, "is my drama teacher from Pinelands High School, Mr Harris. He taught me that hard work pays off – I call it The Mr Harris work ethic, which has carried me through many challenges in the theatre and movie worlds when competing or working next to actors who have a formal tertiary theatre qualification. I believed Mr Harris when he said I will be successful because I demand it. I work really hard and have learned to improvise when called to do so. My years at Pinelands High School were one of the best times in my life – I owe PHS and the Pinelands community so much!"

Siv creates his own work

When Siv talks about his career success he describes what he does as a "full time obsession", not a hobby and not a full time job. He is a perfectionist, putting his all into doing what he loves most. "How lucky am I that I can wake up every day looking forward to what I do – and get paid for it? Not only that, but I have travelled the world – Europe, America, the middle east. My favourite destinations are New York City and Thailand."

Drama is in his blood

When Siv was only 10 years old he performed at Madiba's birthday party. So to get a part in the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom was a great honour knowing he would be helping to tell the story of one of the world's most famous icons. Next on his list, in-between doing commercials and other film shoots, Siv is mulling the idea of another one man show called Born Free, looking at 20 years of democracy. His dreams are many and far reaching – he would like to buy a house and car for his mother, he would love to start a school and name it after her as acknowledgement for all she did for their family and the encouragement she has given to Siv throughout his life.  Siv is no stranger to the camera and is able to give any expression at the drop of a hat.

Pinelanders

Mike Harris

Mike Harris is Head of History, and well known producer of many successful drama productions at Pinelands High School – recently The Sound of Music with a full orchestra was no exception. He sees theatre and drama as a place where students can push their boundaries and realise their true potential, in every walk of life. Mike is becoming a legend for his walking history tours in Europe known as "Paris with Harris".

Life Lessons through drama

Mike attempts to involve as many students as possible in the school productions. He believes drama is uplifting and comments that he can see the students evolve from being shy at the time of an audition to 'poised actors' when the play is performed before an audience. Backstage crew are just as important as the actors on stage, and the hardest and probably the busiest job is that of the production secretary who is organiser, time keeper and everyone rolled into one – a valuable life lesson. Drama increases self confidence, public speaking becomes easier and even that all important job interview can benefit. Mike and his wife Linda, who at present works in caring in England, have four adult daughters Kim, Julie, Bronwen and Victoria, who are musically talented and have all been influenced by amateur dramatics.

Timing and talent

Mike has an eye for the requirements of different plays. This year it was obvious, when working closely with the Head of Music, Ivan Meredith, that there were plenty of good voices that would suit The Sound of Music perfectly. Mike struggled to get the rights to perform, but perseverance

paid off. The rights can be expensive, especially for local productions such as District Six.

2012 - something different

Last year Mike produced three plays at Pinelands High − to give an opportunity to as many pupils as possible. Two plays The Diary of Anne Frank and Wait Until Dark were performed in tandem. Using clever logistics one play was performed on the stage, and for the next play, the audience turned and faced the other way to watch the play being performed at the other end of the hall. This was necessary to accommodate the scene changes that were required for each play. The third play Silent Night was performed in September.

The arts centre dream

Looking to the future Mike describes the Arts Centre that the school hopes to establish which would encompass art rooms and all the facets of an academic drama qualification, namely music, dance and drama. There would be a music room, and a small theatre, as the sound in the current hall is notoriously difficult to control. Students could be better prepared when they go for auditions – not only for the academic subject, but as an extramural activity, which is popular amongst a wide range of students.

Successful PHS drama students

There have been a number of students who have followed careers in drama after their good grounding at PHS, such as Clare Watling and Siv Ngesi, successful comedian and actor. Mike Harris has directed a large collection of plays such as Oklahoma!. Annie Get Your Gun, Oliver!, My Fair Lady, Othello, Siswe Banzi is Dead, Uproar in the House, Grease, The Island, The Chalk Garden, And Then There Was One, Singin' in the Rain,

Mamba (an African Macbeth), Twelve Angry Men, Annie, Journey's End,, Death on the Nile, Noises off, District Six, Rebecca, Hairspray, The Diary of Anne Frank, Wait until Dark, and Silent Night – and this is not a complete list!

PAris and Berlin Mike believes that teachers are good inventors and he has always loved the challenge of planning the teaching day to give any set of students the best foundation of knowledge, and the tools to apply the facts given to them. In 2010 two of the history students in the class suggested a cultural tour to Europe to supplement the learning on the French Revolution, the Second World War, and the Cold War. The field trip is now popular and is referred to as "history school on the walk'' where the group visits Paris, and Berlin. Accommodation is in youth hostels and meals are put together from local fresh food markets, except for a restaurant meal on the last night. Students don't miss out on the local attractions such as a walk up the Eiffel Tower!

Mike Harris Hobbies

"I love reading and my favourite topics are history, biography, theatre, movies, travel and politics. Sometimes I will be busy with up to eight or nine books at a time. My daughters made a home rule stating "If one book comes in, then one must go out". I also enjoy reading and writing poetry. Mike has also continued his own drama interest playing Colonel Pickering and President Roosevelt in recent Gilbert and Sullivan productions of My Fair Lady and Annie. 

Mike Harris began his teaching career at Wynberg Boys' High School in 1972. After a spell at Pinelands High School (PHS) from 1979 to 1989, especially as Head of English, he left to fulfil the Deputy and then the Principal's post at Sea Point High. In 1997 he returned to PHS to take up the Head of History position, and continued his love of amateur dramatics through the school drama productions, where his collaboration with Alastair Cockburn (recently retired Director of Planning at Artscape) was successful.

iv and I had always wanted to see the Scandinavian countries and when we saw the option of a cruise to these as well as Germany, Estonia, Russia and Finland we could not resist. We had made plans for a cruise this year but had thought of going to the Eastern Med. This idea was soon replaced by the excitement of visiting the design centres we had always dreamed of but never thought of cruising to. We booked and left for Copenhagen on the 18th August, boarded the Emerald Princess on the 19th. and our adventure began. Our first stop was Oslo and we were absolutely enchanted by the sculpture gardens and friendly people. It is probably one of the most beautiful cities we have seen. Approaching Oslo by sea along the Oslo fjord was an experience we shall not forget, and the summer holiday homes reaching down to the waters edge just made one want to stay forever. Our next stop was Aarhus in Denmark , the oldest city in Scandinavia, and then on to

Warnemunde, a seaside resort of Rostock, one of the medieval city states that formed the Hanseatic League. Sailing overnight we reached Tallinn the next day, a town with a rich history from the turbulent times of medieval Europe to the present, when it gained its freedom and is now part of the Baltic Republics. Tallinn is the political, commercial and cultural centre of Estonia. The highlight of the tour was of course St. Petersburg, where we spent two days marvelling at the wide range of architectural styles and the magnificent collections of art in the Hermitage Museum. The collection consists of over three million works and includes the likes of Da Vinci, Monet, Rembrandt and Renoir. One would think you could not better this experience until you arrive in Helsinki. The city is a vibrant and modern example of contemporary design and has nurtured some of the best architects and designers of the 20th century. Anyone who has studied art and design will recognize the

names of Eero Saarinen and Alvar Aalto, two giants of the modern era. Helsinki is a modern graceful city, with spacious boulevards and many squares and parks, an absolute delight to explore. There is a Lutheran church which has been carved out of the rock and blends into the surrounding environment, natural light pours in from the church's glazed dome and contains the rough rock interior. The last city we visited was Stockholm, and it was as if we had kept the best for last. The approach to Stockholm is through the breathtaking archipelago, 58 miles of small islands now used for summer holiday homes. Built on a number of islands, Stockholm is connected by waterways and bays, and if there was one city we would love to live in, other than Cape Town, it would be Stockholm. The underlying irony of this statement is that the sooner a person discovers that money doesn’t create happiness, the happier they’re likely to be. There’s absolutely no doubt that money is a powerful vehicle which, if used for good purposes, can be instrumental in helping one achieve one’s goals and dreams. When harnessed and engaged correctly, money can form a healthy conduit between a person’s good intentions and personal fulfilment. It was David Lee Roth who once quipped, “Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a yacht big enough to pull up right alongside it", and he's not entirely incorrect. You're more likely to make a great life doing what you love than make a mediocre living doing what you must.

Myth #2: Money is a score card

Measuring one’s self-worth by one’s net worth is a dangerously risky and potentially destructive game. A person’s character, integrity and honour have nought to do with owning flat screens and designer jeans. Self-worth is surely made of something deeper and more durable that last month’s pay cheque or next month’s bonus. As Will Rogers once said, “Too many people spend money they earned to buy things they don't want to impress people that they don't like," resulting in a loss of personal identity and a deflated self-worth.

Myth #3: Someone else will take care of you financially

Whether it’s a naïve wife believing that her financial needs have been taken care of in a Will that she’s never seen, or a trust fund baby with a misguided entitlement mentality, there is no greater recipe for disaster than failure to take personal responsibility for one’s financial future. Trust funds, inheritances and promises of financial security aside, everyone is ultimately responsible for their own planned retirement.

Myth #4: You WILL never have enough money

Sadly, this is the money myth that forces individuals into the dreaded debt trap and imprisons them there – dooming them to

a lifetime of hand-to-mouth survival and a “this-is-my-lot” mentality. The treadmill of debt is the thief of financial peace. Simply put by Dave Ramsey, "Financial peace isn't the acquisition of stuff. It's learning to live on less than you make, so you can give money back and have money to invest. You can't win until you do this.”

Myth #5: There's a hot new stock that everyone's buying

It’s common cause that fear and greed are the greatest enemies of long-term investing, and it’s these two mental biases that we as investors need to overcome in order to ensure that we remain committed to our investment plans. If you’re investing for your retirement under the guidance of a qualified financial planner, then speculation should play no part in your decisionmaking. Achieving your retirement goals has less to do with intelligence and more to do with discipline.

Myth #6: You're too young to worry about your retirement funding

Those who begin investing for their retirement with their first pay cheque will know and appreciate the full power of compound interest when they reach retirement. Delaying your retirement funding by even five years from the start of your working career has exponential effects on one’s retirement funding shortfalls. Increased human longevity means that most adults now have only 40 earning years to fund for what could be 30 retirement years. The good news is that it is never too late to start funding for your retirement. There’s a lovely saying that goes, “A year from now you will wish you had started today.” Start investing today.

Myth #7: You need to have money before you see a financial planner

Lastly, a great misconception amongst would-be investors is that the accumulation of wealth is a mandatory step before seeking investment advice from a qualified planner. Regardless of net worth, monthly income or age, financial planning is an essential discipline to be followed from the first day of employment and, thereafter, at least annually for the rest of one’s life. 
