Cape Wagtail

Over and out – signing off for the year

Birds in Pinelands

2013 seems to have flown by! After we publish this edition (No 36) we are looking forward to a break in December to spend time with family we have not seen for a while and to catch up with friends. As we take our holiday over December, we will not be publishing a Muse edition at the start of January. The first edition for 2014 will be the February edition when we will be back with more community news and interviews.

Everyone is familiar with the Cape Wagtail, which wanders along pavements, lawns and pool edges snapping up insects as it goes. Pairs are often seen together, continually bobbing their tails. People often comment that Cape Wagtails regularly have deformed feet, and are often missing toes or a leg. This seems to be caused a by disease brought on by the the Scaly Leg Mite that is a natural parasite that lives under leg scales of birds. One of the pair that visits our garden pond is missing a whole leg (see photo above) but she still raised her young successfully this year. Have you noticed though how they sleep in big groups in winter? Keep an eye out in the plane tree outside the Villagio entrance to the Howard Centre in the late afternoon – dozens of Cape Wagtails will suddenly arrive from all directions and many sleep inside the empty Cape Weaver nests hanging there.

We want to say a big thank you to the many loyal and occasional advertisers who enable us to keep the Muse available as a free read for the people of Pinelands and Thornton. Thank you also for the many compliments and the encouragement we have received from readers over the year. We do try to keep a high standard for the magazine and it's great for us to know that people enjoy it, and forgive our occasional mistakes. Apparently the Muse gets around sent by locals to family and friends around the country and around the world. Remember that every edition is available online on our website www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za – an easy way to share it and to refer to older editions if you are looking for something you read a while ago. Compiling the stories and adverts for the magazine has certainly given us a closer contact with the people of the suburb and a better understanding of it's workings. We look forward to bringing you a new set of editions next year. Glynnis and I wish you all the best for 2014. Together, let's make our home an even greater place to live than it already is! Enjoy the issue.

We do note however that there is resistance from buyers for properties above the R3.5m mark as the macro-economic environment is still not conducive to induce a real recovery in the market. The biggest demand remains for properties under R2.5m where the average days taken to sell well priced homes has dropped to less than 30 days.

LET

The property prices in Pinelands and Thornton increased by 11% and 3% respectively despite the economists not being bullish about the market in general. A shortage in the availability of homes for sale has developed and this has resulted in an increase in prices which has been positive for sellers

Rentals in both Pinelands and Thornton remain in short supply with numerous enquiries for all accommodation from R6 000 to R20 000 per month. We are pleased to report that at the time of writing we only had one tenant in arrears. This is due to our strict qualification criteria and the fact that we interview all of our tenants personally.

SOLD

So 2013 turned out to be a good year for sellers in Pinelands, with the prices in Thornton steady. At Seeff we sold and let in excess of 100 properties during this year which is 30% up on last year.

Job readiness and education projects offer hope through Phambili ngeThemba Phambili ngeThemba “Going forward with Hope”, an NGO started by Pinelands Methodist Church in 2000, is making a noticeable difference in the lives of many, who face seemingly insurmountable social, educational, economic and emotional challenges. Phambili ngeThemba has Job Readiness training (Zanokhanyo) and education projects. Courses are offered at the Zanokhanyo Training & Resource Centre in Epping where participants share stories of struggle, abuse and illness. As a faith-based organisation, people are encouraged to consider the claims of Christ and to look to Him for healing and hope. Course topics include Emotional Healing, Communication/Conflict Management, Character, Personal Finance, Problemsolving, Job searching skills, C.Vs, Interviews, and Basic computer skills.

Since 2008 over 400 people have completed the course and 65% have either found permanent employment or furthered their studies. Some were hired through a new partnership with retail companies. Phambili ngeThemba’s education project has been involved in numerous initiatives and in 2011 partnered with WCED to improve educational levels at Mokone Primary in Langa. Volunteers help with English literacy in Grades 1 and 2, numeracy in Grade 6, and life orientation in Grade 7. Grade 4s have an after-school Bible club. Church teams offer holiday clubs for all learners. Teachers have seen improvements in the learners’ scores and encourage the continued involvement of volunteers.

PHS Honours Dan Overett for 40 years in Teaching 2013 signals the end of an era for long time teacher Dan Overett, as he retires. Jeremy Gibbon, Principal of Pinelands High School, awarded Dan full colours for his selfless service to teaching, at a special assembly. An excerpt from the Principal’s speech: "As a young 24 year old, Mr Overett arrived at Pinelands High School in January of 1973. He took up a post as a Biology teacher and very soon made a name for himself as a fine teacher and an educator who saw the value of extra-curricular activities. The next year he completed his B.Ed and in 1975 he received promotion as a Senior Assistant at Queens Park High School. During this time he acted both as Deputy and Principal, but it only took two years for the allure of Pinelands to draw Mr Overett back and in 1977 he returned to a post that would see him serve right through to retirement 36 years later in 2013. The kind of life-long commitment to the teaching profession and to a single school that Mr Overett has demonstrated is extremely rare these days and the world is the poorer for it. I count it an enormous privilege to have had the experience of working with Mr Overett over the last number of years. He is remarkable in many ways, but none more so than his ability to balance traditional values with modern trends in schools. His moral compass is set so clearly that he makes everyone around him feel safe and secure. And yet he is constantly open to consider new ideas and embrace technology, actively engaging with his iPad in the last few months of his teaching career. Mr Overett and his wife, Jenny, deserve their retirement more than most. They have truly served education in Pinelands in a way few have ever before and probably will ever in the future. We salute you and thank you for the remarkable role you have played in so many thousands of people's lives and wish you a long, restful and enjoyable retirement. God bless you."

ohn Bransby, local resident and director of Maths & Science Solutions has initiated a highly needed and most successful website providing learning and teaching solutions for maths and science from Grade 1 to Grade 12. The provision of the free material that can be downloaded to computers, tablets and smartphones, has been made possible by sponsorship by the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA) who have their head office at Old Mutual in Pinelands. The actuaries see the importance of youngsters achieving top marks in Maths & Science, and have risen to the challenge by Operations Manager at ASSA, Mr Wim Els, for every member of the ASSA to contribute

R1 000 per year of their own salaries for the next three years to initiate and activate the maths and science project, which hopes to make materials and methodology available to 6 000 High Schools, 10 000 Maths and Science teachers and 4 000 000 learners throughout the country. The website offering the free downloads: www.mathsandscience.com was launched in May with stunning results: 1. 50 000 unique viewers 2. 185 000 FREE Maths and Science downloads to computers, tablets and smart phones (70% South African) 3. 335 000 page views from people in 4. 890 cities in 5. 104 countries around the world.

Local schools in Maths & Science pilot testing Pilot testing is being done at the LEAP School in Pinelands who had the following comment "John, we are delighted to be involved in this project. We have placed laptop computers and data projectors in each of the Maths & Science classrooms and 11:57 AM the teachers have really benefited a great deal from the workshops that you have already run at our school earlier in the year. We are confident that our Matric Maths & Science results will improve − starting from this year!" Maths HOD. "Guys, I have spent 3 hours looking at the new FREE ASSA/MSM Maths & Science website − it is incredible! Make sure that you each register and start to make use of all the fantastic materials that Mr Bransby has placed on the website for us − you won’t regret spending time on the website!" Learner − addressing the whole Leap school at an assembly. Pinelands High School is testing various Maths & Science programmes and comment

that there is nothing as comprehensive and detailed as John Bransby's Maths and Science on line course. They would be keen to experiment with the ‘flipped classroom’ method with the materials. Oude Molen Maths & Science School finds the material is fantastic for their requirements! Their teachers have wonderful facilities − SMART Boards and internet in the classrooms and labs − but very little really suitable, useful, relevant software for daily use. The Maths & Science materials and methodology solves that problem for them. Further sponsorship is required for teacher training around both the materials and methodology throughout the country. To this end ASSA are approaching other organisations to contribute to a trust. See Facebook www.facebook.com/pages/ Maths-and-Science-Marketing. Congratulations and best wishes to Pinelander John Bransby on an excellent initiative.

The joy of communal gardens

Vivien Marks and Dr Geoff Tribe are passionate about the communal garden at Tarragona, a complex of cottages off Ringwood Drive. "When I moved into my cottage 8 years ago, my neighbour was a dear elderly lady, Betty Trull. She had single handedly planted and cared for the garden that runs the length of the complex, and continued to do so until she moved into a retirement centre a few years ago. Since then we have cared for the garden which is our pride and joy. We have spring flowering fygies and clivia, with fynbos that attracts many birds. The garden is an example to those living in communal buildings that the surrounding land can be turned into something that gives pleasure to all residents", says Vivien Marks.

As part of Cannon's Creek Life Orientation programme, the Grade 10's adopt a community project for the year. Students spent time this year helping at Ubuntu House, where there is a nursery for approximately 12 babies. Fund raising and collecting donations of nappies and food are all part of the students mission, along with public speaking to publicise the needs of Ubuntu House, and the meaning of Ubuntu. Melanie Williams, Life orientation teacher at Cannons Creek is delighted that the efforts of the Cannon's Creek students have been recognised through the AON Award which is given to the school that has made the greatest contribution over the year.

FROM ROYAL TREAT TO FAMILY FEAST

It is always so tempting when one sees the pizza delivery car going down Forest Drive. What's for supper becomes pizza for supper. Warm tasty, filling, and nutritious. Although the concept of flat bread with spicy toppings, baked in a mud oven dates back to ancient times, the popular modern day pizza creation is credited to an Italian baker from Naples, in the late 1800's who patriotically chose to top his flat bread with the colours of Italy, to impress the visiting King Umberto and his consort Queen Margherita. The baker named Raffaele Esposito used tomatoes for the red of the Italian flag, white mozzarella cheese and green basil. The dish was well received by the visiting royalty and the popularity of the dish became well known. Thanks to Italian immigrants pizza made its way to America in the 1900's. Today the number one topping for a pizza in the USA is pepperoni, and can you believe it,

Americans eat approximately 350 slices of pizza per second. From the humble beginnings of the margherita pizza, the tastes and flavours vary widely around the world. Popular in India as a topping is pickled ginger, minced mutton, and paneer cheese. The Japanese like a combination of mayonnaise, potato and bacon called Mayo Jaqa, plus eel and

squid. Russians love red herring pizza and Brazilians use plenty of green peas. What's your favourite? Pizza trivia: The mathematical volume of a pizza is pizza. How does that work you say? The volume of a cylinder is calculated as ∏ x radius2 x height. Well if Pi represents ∏, z = radius of the pizza and a = the height then ∏ * radius2 * height = Pi * z * z * a = Pizza.

Celebrating Thornton

Clive and Sandra Justus Alderman Clive Justus and his wife Sandra, an avid pastoral carer are well known members of the Thornton community being true examples of selfless residents giving their time to help others.

Teaching in Thornton

Clive's teaching career began at Thornton High after completing a BSc at UCT followed by a Teaching Diploma. He enjoyed five and half wonderful years at the school and discovered that Thornton was a welcoming community of supportive families, where he taught wonderful students. In 1984 after completing his Bachelor of Education, Clive took up a position at the Cape Technikon, where he taught biology and general science for 15 and a half years (fulfilling the post vacated by Pinelander Nicolette Louw).

Giving voice to the ratepayers

In 1986 Clive attended the local ratepayers meeting needing to drum up some action on the council's decision not to mow the grass verges. The chairman of the meeting noted that Clive had a lot to say and suggested he take up the position of

www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za

chairman. Declining the invitation Clive became a committee member − and when the chairman position came up again, he agreed to take on the responsibility as long as the members of the ratepayers association were strong in their convictions − he didn't want toothless dogs, but ones with a bit of bite!

From teacher to City Councillor

In 1988 it was felt that Thornton needed a councillor from within the suburb, and Clive stood for election − so began his career as a City Councillor − 25 years ago. Ultimately he had to make a decision between teaching at Technikon and serving on council, especially as his duties as executive council member for City Planning was a demanding position. As a full time councillor, Clive has served under Helen Zille as Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services, enjoying his work with Ms Zille who, he says, has vision, drive and determination and allows her colleagues to develop their potential. He also served under Mayor Dan Plato. Alderman Justus values residents who raise legitimate gripes with well founded reasonable expectations, that can be addressed by council. As a leader he strives for consistency and fairness, even in the face of having to make difficult decisions.

Advice for those seeking to join the political arena

One must be dedicated to the service of others, have integrity, be bold, willing to take the good with the bad, understand that servants of the community rarely get acknowledged for what they do, and strive to make decisions for the greater good that will allow you to sleep at night.

A wake-up call

In 2004 Sandra was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Clive realised that he had become immersed in his work and needed to spend more time with his family. Season tickets for Rugby provided an opportunity to bond with Devon, to learn about the game and to appreciate Devon's position as lock in the rugby 1st team at school.

Sandra − Living up to her name

Sandra who has lived in Thornton, in Plane Avenue, all her life, left her career in banking to look after their two children. When Devon and Phillip started school, Sandra became the secretary of the Methodist Church, and after 14 years she joined the Pastoral Care committee, where she takes great pleasure in treating the seniors from local retirement villages to outings to Hermanus, Fishhoek, Langebaan, Darling, the Strand, Stellenbosch

live and Sandra began their married life in Thornton 30 years ago on June 25th 1983. They met while Clive was teaching at Thornton High School, where Clive recognised Sandra as "a ray of sunshine". Thornton is their home where they raised their sons − Devon, who works in the hotel industry, and is studying for an HR degree, and Phillip who is studying mechanical engineering at UCT.

Celebrating Thornton and Paarl. Sandra also organises monthly food parcels for underprivileged families in Thornton and Ruyterwacht, with donations from the church congregation − really living up to the meaning of "Sandra" − compassionate, caring, charitable, helper of humanity, defender.

Taking life day by day

"After being diagnosed with MS I tend to live day to day and not focus too far into the future. My dream is for my sons to be successful and happy in whatever they do. Along with their studies, Devon and Phillip enjoy sport, and with five Argus cycle tours under his belt, Phillip is encouraging his brother to give it a go next year. Phillip is also very involved with the youth and children's work at Pinelands Baptist Church. My diagnosis brought about a desire for the family to do more together and make the most of every moment. So we planned a holiday together and travelled to Europe, where Clive and I celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary in Rome. Devon and Phillip built on their experiences from a previous holiday in 1999 when they had gone as young boys and returned as young men − an education gleaned from exposure to the international community. We have had the opportunity for more travel and have enjoyed holidays to Sardinia, the UK, Italy and South Korea. Our local holiday is taken in July when we go as a family to Sedgefield on the Garden route. And now we look forward to welcoming another member to our family, Tanya du Plessis from Hoedspruit who is engaged to Devon."

Last word

Clive and Sandra feel that Thornton is the best kept secret in Cape Town, with ease of access to all major routes, and affordable housing. The residents are generous and have concern for those around them. This community oriented couple urge us all to own, love and improve your street − wherever you are. 

The spirit of Christmas is doing for others, Never forgetting we're sisters and brothers, Sharing our blessings wherever we go, Caring for people and telling them so... Spreading warm feelings of peace and good cheer, Making each person feel special and dearthe spirit of Christmas is love. May your Christmas be blessed with love. Money Matters

Be a Smart Shopper By Sue Torr Director at Crue Consulting Keep your focus

Stick to your budget

Amidst the tinkle of tinsel, the bobbing of baubles and tinny renditions of age-old carols, and with most shops ablaze with more glitter than a night at the Oscars, large retail outlets are geared to trade on consumer impulsiveness and a sure season of over-spending. If knowledge is indeed power then, in order to ensure that we remain smart shoppers, we would do well to understand how our emotions and psyche can be manipulated into forsaking the budget and blowing the bonus long before it reflects in our bank accounts.

Is price synonymous with necessity?

With cost being an ever-present factor in the mind of most consumers, many retailers rely on the ruse of product contrast to further boost sales. In order to make a product look more attractive, retailers often place a similar, but more expensive, product next to it, leading many consumers to believe that they have made a cogent choice by purchasing the less expensive product, regardless of whether they ever needed it in the first place.

Avoid Pressure selling ploys

Catch-phrases such as exclusive offer, limited edition and for premier customers only are considered irrefutable invitations to those who simply have to have. Led by the desire for elitism, the real cost of buying status often far exceeds the purchase price. Close on the heels of the exclusivity promise is the threat of a time limit – ‘while stocks last’, ‘for a limited period only’ or ‘this weekend only’. Regret is one of the most powerful human emotions – like FOMO (the fear of missing out), but with financial implications for the risk taker.

If the dauntingly decorative displays and lavish lights don’t disorientate you while wondering the aisles, the careful art of product organisation may well leave you lost mid-mall. Anxious that their customers become too familiar with the shop layout, retailers regularly re-organise their shop interiors so that consumers are forced to go in search of their trusted favourites, exposing them to more products and thereby increasing potential sales.

Clever product positioning

No less important than product organisation is the positioning of products on the shelves – the sweet aisle at any point of sale being perfectly positioned at eyelevel to a toddler − causing those narrow aisles winding towards the till points to be dubbed the “walk of shame” by any mother who’s helplessly tried to calm a screeching child while wrenching jelly tots from his sticky fists.

Justifying unplanned purchases?

Hand-in-hand with impulse shopping is the ubiquitous buyer’s remorse; and in order to alleviate the onset of guilt following large or unscheduled purchases, retailers have learnt that reassurances such as “you’re worth it”, “you deserve to spoil yourself” or “only the best is good enough” are like sal volatile to a faint heart.

The best present−a debt free new year

While gift shopping, spoiling our loved ones and splurging out on little luxuries are all part of what makes Christmas special, our advice is to equip oneself with enough knowledge to avoid being taken advantage of by alluring advertising. By recognising clever marketing ploys and identifying the emotions that are triggered within, consumers are empowered to take control of their purchases and adhere to their budgets, content in the knowledge that perhaps their greatest gift this Christmas will be a new year free from debt. 

Travellers

Tristan Da Cunha

Shelley and Dave Hendrikse visit the most remote inhabited island in the world, Tristan da Cunha. Isolated in the South Atlantic, only 11.2km from North to South and 98km square. It is 2430km to St Helena, 2816km to South Africa and 3360km to South America. The highest point, an active volcano, is Queen Mary's Peak at 2062m. Shelley −Getting There

"Tristan da Cunha is British territory and visitors have to apply to the governor for permission to stay on the island, which is only granted if accommodation is available. I was lucky enough to visit Dave in September 2012 while he was employed on the island. My passage on the maiden voyage of the SA Aghulas ll took six days. 38 passengers disembarked at Tristan da Cunha, and I enjoyed a three week stay until the Aghulas returned to take us home. My first view of the island was breathtaking with the volcanic peak covered in snow and the steep cliffs mountainous above the small settlement called Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. The harbour is too small for large ships to dock − neither is it a safe harbour. To avoid damage from the rough seas the locals remove their boats from the water, and lower them in when they are about to go fishing. Most ships have to unload cargo and visitors onto a barge. Passengers are hoisted off the ship in "the blue box" − a lift shaped apparatus used to safely transport them onto the harbour. The SA Aghulas ll uses a helicopter to transport passengers onto the island.

Islander Generosity The Tristanians are a close knit community with a long tradition of self support and neighbourliness. At the last census the total population was 270, with only seven family names. Dave and I arrived back at his

www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za

Main Picture: The island of Tristan da Cunha with below the only settlement – Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. Below right: Rockhopper penguins are plentiful on Nightingale and Inaccessible Islands.

house to find various welcoming gifts of cakes, meat and cooked meals − all left on the dining room table. No-one locks their homes and there is only one policeman in town. I looked forward to meeting all these kind people and didn't have to wait long as social occasions on the island are plentiful, with birthdays, christenings, and weddings celebrated at the Prince Philip Hall where everyone is welcome. Tourists are treated to hand made crafts such as garments knitted from local wool, a 9 hole golf course (shared with chickens and cows), and one can trek up Mount Mary if you have at least five hours to spare. I decided to take a boat trip to nearby Nightingale island with its huge bird population including Rockhopper penguins and breeding albatrosses. I didn't realise what a choppy sea I would have to cover before reaching the treacherous landing site among the slippery rocks".

Tristanians

Dave became acquainted with the Tristan islanders during his trips to Gough Island (see Travellers Muse May 2011). Their unusual dialect, shaped by the founder fathers of the settlement, is peppered with colloquial terms such as "top" for a roof, "fardi" for a Godfather and the "dong" − an empty gas cylinder used as a signalling system. Tristanians work in the crayfish factory which is the island's major revenue source. All families farm potatoes in an

area called the patches. Grazing land is limited and so too are the livestock that each family is allowed to own − one cow per person and one sheep per family member. There is a natural spring on the island with the water being filtered through the volcanic rock resulting in a crystal clear supply of water.

Sudden Volcanic Eruption

In 1961 the islanders were hurriedly evacuated to England when there was a volcanic eruption. Returning two years later they found their settlement intact, but the crayfish factory and one house had been buried in volcanic lava.

Connectivity

Despite the complete isolation of the island there is a school, and children are given the opportunity to leave the island for further education in South Africa. Gone are the days of radio communication. Homes have telephones with London telephone numbers, internet and satellite television.

Would we go again?

"Yes! We are booked on the SA Agulhas ll for September 2014 and look forward to the less frenzied lifestyle for a holiday break, and to seeing and thanking the friends with whom we have shared many a delicious crayfish tail". 

Phyllo chicken pie

with roasted veggies Recipe from Kos is op die tafel!

15 pickling onions or shallots, halved 1 small butternut, peeled and cubed ½ each red and yellow pepper, sliced 15 ml (1 tbsp) soft brown sugar 30 ml (2 tbsp) balsamic vinegar 30 ml (2 tbsp) olive or avocado oil 8 sprigs fresh rosemary and thyme salt and ground black pepper to taste 4 deboned chicken thighs or fillets, cut into bite-sized pieces 250 g cherry tomatoes, halved 250 ml (1 cup) sour cream or Greek yoghurt 60 ml (¼ cup) basil pesto 150 g broccoli, cut into florets 75 ml (5 tbsp) coarsely chopped fresh herbs, e.g. origanum, basil or Italian parsley

Pastry

8 sheets phyllo pastry 45 ml (3 tbsp) each butter and olive or avocado oil, melted together

1. Filling: Preheat oven to 200 °C. Place veggies, except tomatoes and broccoli, in a single layer on a baking tray. Sprinkle sugar over and drizzle with vinegar and oil. Place herb sprigs on top and season to taste. Roast for 20 minutes. 2. Season chicken and tomatoes and toss through the veggies. Roast for another 10 minutes or until chicken and veggies are cooked. 3. Pastry: Meanwhile, brush two phyllo sheets with the butter-oil mixture and place on top of each other. Line the bottom of a baking dish (25 x 35 cm) with brushed phyllo, making sure that 1-2 cm of the pastry reaches up, over the edge. Repeat with remaining phyllo, overlapping the sheets in the dish. 4. Mix the sour cream and pesto. Stir the broccoli and fresh herbs into the roasted veggies and chicken. Season to taste and spoon into the base. Pour the sour cream mixture over and bake for 30-40 minutes or until the phyllo is golden brown and the filling heated through. Serve with a green salad.

Tip

Phyllo pastry dries out very easily, so keep it covered while working with it.

Celebrate in Style ‘Summertime, and the living is easy’… or so the song goes. This time of year, there is a sense of festivity and celebration in the air and what better way to enjoy that, than with good food, good friends and family around a table?

We all enjoy lighter food in summer and over the festive weeks we often opt for food at room temperature or even cold food. Including veggies in your meals, means that you’re filling up on good ingredients and not only meat or starch. Although this colourful pie has sour cream as part of the filling, it’s a good balance of ingredients to

make it a meal that calls for a celebration. The combination of veggies, pesto and chicken reminds one of Mediterranean flavours and is not as heavy as a traditional chicken pie–something a lot of people still love making during the festive season. The phyllo pastry is crisp and delicious and the pie is really not difficult to make. So if you’re looking for something different on your festive table this year, still want to wow your guests and not slave away for hours, look no further. All you need with this, is a large green salad, a light starter and a delectable dessert.
