BIRDS IN PINELANDS

NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNINGS… After our Summer holidays, fresh and full of optimism, we stand ready to take on the world. As we return to the daily routine, those lofty goals and resolutions, dreamed up while relaxing on some tropical beach now await our attention. In the cold light of morning though, they don't seem so easy or attainable. How do you even start when it all seems so daunting and difficult? Theodore Roosevelt had some sage advice on how to approach this. "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." Repeat those simple steps often enough and you will likely find yourself quite far up the road before too long. It's also worth considering that the very start of the year may not be the ideal time to dive headlong into a new venture. While we may feel fresh it often takes some weeks for our energy and stamina to return. Remember also that any time can be the right time to take a new direction or start something new. New dreams and decisions don't only happen on holidays! So, maybe we should rather think about wishing ourselves Happy New Week instead of just New Year – we get 52 of those every year, and 52 small new beginnings could add up to a great year come December. We wish you all the best for 2014 and hope it holds something special for you.

The bird formerly known as "Cape Francolin" adds a touch of rural charm to Pinelands. Small family groups, known as coveys, are not common but can still be seen wandering the verges and open flowerbeds where they scratch in the sand for insects, bulbs and seeds. The males can be recognised by their formidable spurs half way up the leg which they are not shy to use during their dominance quarrel with other males. They are one of the first birds to give their territorial calls and if you are up and about at dawn you can often hear their harsh crowing. Text and image by Dr Callan Cohen, research associate at UCT's FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, bird book author, and director of Birding Africa tours: www.birdingafrica.com.

Prospects for the residential housing market in 2014 By all accounts there seems to be a consensus that residential house prices will continue to escalate in 2014. Most are of the opinion that it will be somewhere between 5% and 9% before inflation. We may also see a continuing weakening rand and rise in inflation which could prompt an increase in interest rates and a period of deteriorating affordability. With the forthcoming elections in April rates could start rising as early as May. Demand for homes in Pinelands and Thornton continues to outstrip supply but the number of enquiries for homes above R3 million remains constrained and the the biggest demand is still in the R1.5 to R2.5 million price range. From the table in this article you will note that Pinelands and Thornton had good average price increases in excess of 10% but that was due mainly to fewer homes being sold for under R2 million in Pinelands. At the other end of the scale there were 16 sales in excess of R3 million and only three sales above R4 million which together make up 15% of the sales in the area. We notice that of the roughly 27 houses that are currently advertised for sale in Pinelands, 75% are in

excess of R3 million. If you are serious about selling remember that homes above R3 million can take up to 8 months to sell and achieve about 85% to 90% of their asking prices.

Our advice remains “do not overprice your home in the hope of getting a better price. If you price them correctly you will achieve a better result in a shorter time and save yourself much frustration and expense.” Should you wish to sell or rent your home please contact any of our agents for a free valuation.

PROPERTY POINTERS ABSENCE OF DUE DATE FOR FULFILMENT OF CONDITION – SALE LAPSES AFTER REASONABLE TIME

Where an agreement of sale does not provide for due dates for the fulfilment of suspensive conditions, the agreement will lapse if the conditions are not fulfilled within a reasonable time. It is thus imperative for contracts to specify a date in order to prevent any misinterpretation and vagueness, resulting in the contract becoming null and void.

Coffee Culture

C

offee — its a pick me up, wake me up, and yet we also have a coffee break, a time to relax and take time out. Coffee and coffee houses have been around for centuries and the essential practice of socialising, chatting and making general and serious conversation has not changed. The coffee culture is however evolving and there are constantly changes and additions to coffee and coffee houses, as the new generation brings their ever present companion with them — technology. In South Africa coffee is becoming more popular, and the taste for coffee is moving away from instant blends to filter coffee. More homes have coffee grinders and filter coffee makers, or espresso machines. There are endless types of coffee — flat white, Americano, skinny for low fat, decaf for those who can't sleep after drinking coffee, to name a few. Once you have found a coffee shop that serves a good cup of coffee at a reasonable price, what else do you look for? With

so many people having mobile internet devices coffee shops are expected to have some sort of wi-fi offering. This is a big bonus for those wanting to work or catch up on emails while having a coffee break. Another nice touch is an electrical point to plug in a laptop. Discerning customers now look for comfort and expect good decor to go with their coffee. It goes without saying that a range of

delicious cakes and cookies to go with the coffee, or perhaps a savoury option, can only enhance the occasion. White/black, strong or mild — in this shockingly hot weather try an iced coffee, not the milkshake version with cream on top, but the Greek frappé, or the Italian café freddo, which is a shot of espresso kept in the freezer and served as an icy slush. Enjoy your coffee.

MULTIDISCIPLINED ACTIVITY Physical, sensory, intellectual, emotional and social development all comes into play in the disciplined precise sport of Karate. When your child enters the Dojo they learn to cleanse themselves of the day's matters, slip into their white suit and focus on the principles of good character and attitude towards life. Repetition of these traits brings the karateka’s approach to life to conscious mind. They learn to take responsibility for their actions. This is a powerful perspective to hold on life as it empowers them to own their life and lead it. The physical and sensory benefits are extensive. The karateka (someone who practices the art of karate) will gain better balance, co-ordination, quick reflexes, agility and strength. They will learn to trust their body’s ability to move with accuracy without having to guide their movements by watching every action. This is a result of their enhancement of their sense of body position and balance, known as proprioception and vestibular sense respectively.

MIND AND BODY CO ORDINATION Muscle tone is boosted through the stretching elements of Karate. This means

that they will develop a better level of resistance in their muscles that provide a platform to push against to make movements precise and rapid. Karate demands the co-ordination of the two sides of the body which improves communication between the two halves of the brain.

THE BENEFITS OF KATA

Kata is a choreographed pattern of movements to demonstrate individual abilities and understanding of karate. Intellect is brought into play as the katas demand memory skills and sequencing. These are foundation skills for spelling, reading and mathematics. Commitment to work towards achieving a higher level of skill teaches them to set goals and strive towards them.

GROWTH THROUGH NEW SKILLS

Obtaining a new level of skill feeds their emotional growth, self esteem and sense of value. Through karate they will learn strength of character, effort, etiquette, sincerity and self-control. Bottom line: Karate packs a powerful punch in all aspects of your child’s development. Article by Shihan Norman Robinson, 8th Dan, Chief Instructor – Japan Karate Shotokai (JKS) South Africa.

GRAHAM AND DOT BRANSBY This is a rare story of Dot Bransby and her son Graham both winning a sportsmanship trophy at Pinelands Tennis Club in 2013. How often are we likely to see that happen? Dot Bransby began playing tennis when she met her husband, a keen tennis player, John Bransby. (see John Bransby Muse November 2013). She was keen to be a good tennis partner for John and said she would not marry him until she could play as well as he could — just the incentive for John to do a good coaching job! Dot already had the skills of ball sense and quick reflexes from playing hockey and badminton.

A TENNIS COURT IN THE BACK YARD

Dot, John and their three sons, born two years apart, lived on the school property in Port Elizabeth where John was school Headmaster. In effect there was a tennis court "at the bottom of the garden", an

www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za

ideal place to keep the boys occupied and where they learned to play tennis from their now proficient mother.

DOT, HOW DOES A PLAYER DEVELOP THE ATTRIBUTES OF SPORTSMANSHIP? "Tennis was our most popular sport to play together and we could all play at a reasonable level. I think my sons unknowingly developed a respect for an older person playing with them and learnt patience and courtesy on the court that became second nature to them. I think for me I was just grateful to be able to continue playing competitively enough for them to still want to play with me."

RETURNING TO TENNIS AFTER RETIREMENT. Dot's time for sport became limited as the boys grew up, and she had to cope with a demanding job. Tennis fell by the wayside until three years ago when she retired, and Graham encouraged her to take up her racket again. In 2013 Graham and Dot played together in the Pinelands team in the winter league and they had also played together, reaching the quarter finals, in the club championships as well.

"Graham's encouragement to get me back into tennis again and his belief in my ability has spurred me on, to do the best I can, but most of all to enjoy it while I can." says Dot.

GRAHAM, HOW DID YOU FEEL WINNING THE IMPEY CUP?

"Well, this isn't the first time I have won, and I didn't expect to win again. It is good to be acknowledged but I don't think I was born with the required attributes — they come with hard work and maturity." Graham played provincial tournaments as a teenager, and still plays league tennis. Dot comments: "Graham is a very good doubles player — he reads the game well and has good anticipation skills. He is now able to offer his mother a few good tips."  The men's sportsmanship trophy is known as the Impey Cup, and for the ladies The Shirley De Wet Memorial Cup. The Citation reads as follows: "An award to the lady (man) who epitomises the qualities of a true sportsman. Does not get angry or upset while still remaining competitive; Does not give up trying; Congratulates the opposition on a stroke well played and match won; Accepts dubious calls from her (his) opponent with good grace; Is always prepared to give her opponent the benefit of the doubt on the calls. Supports and encourages her partner at all times. Does not bad-mouth other players behind their backs."

PINELANDERS An incredible story of perseverance and hope told to us by a bubbly "happy go lucky" Bev Evans, who was born with a severe diaphragmatic hernia in Mafeking in 1963. Her loving parents opted to look after and love her at home - and not to send her to a care facility. A story of constant and rewarding love. Main Picture: Beverley Evans is on the right, and her mother Anne Evans on the left.

BEVERLEY-ANNE EVANS A BEAUTIFUL BABY

Anne remembers the day that she held her beautiful new baby, Bev, and what a shock it was to discover that her child had problems with her internal organs being misplaced because of a hole in her diaphragm. An emergency trip to Johannesburg for corrective surgery followed two days later. Complications during the life saving operation resulted in brain damage affecting Bev's motor neurones. She remained in hospital for five months and the family was told that Bev would probably not live for long, and would never be able to walk. Photographs and interviews: Glynnis Schutte

FAMILY MOVE TO CAPE TOWN

Anne took her precious child home to share life with her brother David and sister Gail. She put every effort into getting her to eat, and encouraging her in every way to walk. Bev is however, confined to a wheel chair, and her parents made the move to Cape Town when Bev was six years old, so that they could be near the Red Cross Children's Hospital for the care that Bev needed.

REMARKABLE 51 YEARS SURVIVAL

"In spite of the medical team not holding much hope for the future I have just celebrated my 51st birthday and remain happy and positive", says Bev, admiring the bright arrangement of sunflowers and cards received for her birthday.

February 2014 | the muse | 13

WRITING FAMILY STORIES

Cheerful Bev loves drinking tea and chatting. She keeps herself busy typing old fashioned love stories describing the lives of Lords and Ladies, and says she is a great believer in love that comes from the heart. An inspirational poem from a St Giles booklet (see below) is still a favourite for Bev, who feels we should accept one another, without judgement, just as she has accepted her physical disability, and the pain that comes with it.

A ROSE FOR THE QUEEN

Bev is confident and charming, and has a great sense of humour. She has met Boris Becker, and loves to tell the story of her meeting with the Duke of Edinburgh where she jovially greeted him as "Philip" and gave him a rose to "give to his wife".

MEETING MOTHER THERESA

Bev is touched by the love shown to her by others, and one of her icons is Mother Theresa, who she met in 1988 when the Missions of Charity opened a home in Khayelitsha. Mother Theresa's words still ring in her ears: " Keep your faith child and know how much God loves you".

DEDICATED AND LOVING PARENTS

Thinking about it, Bev realises she has her very own angel of hope in her mother Anne, now 82, who strives to make sure Bev is comfortable and her medical needs

are seen to. Their only help is the daily care-giver fondly called "Twiggy", who joined them about a year ago. The days of pleasurable reading with her father Des, came to an end last year when Des sadly passed away just prior to celebrating his 60th wedding anniversary with Anne. See Muse April 2013.

VIEWS ON LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS

"I believe that you should never try and change a person. Accept them as they are, never take a partner for granted. Work at your relationships and remind each other of your love. The most important virtues are commitment, trust and respect.  It was but a Friendly Smile And little it cost in the giving But it shattered the night like the morning light And made tomorrow worth living It was but a Kindly Word. A word that was lightly spoken Yet not in Vain For it chilled the pain Of a heart that was nearly broken. It was but a Helping Hand And it seemed of little availing But its clasp was warm So it saved from harm A brother whose strength was failing.

START OF PRE SCHOOL YEAR 2014

T

he new year has begun. Our children have now spent some time in their new class. Entering school is one of the most important things that will happen to them and it is important to make this as happy and as stress free as possible. Pre−school is preparing children for life itself and is where they form a positive or negative picture about school affecting their future years. The task of the pre−school is to create a playing and learning environment where your child will be able to join in varying activities learning many aspects of their development without even realising it. The teachers create special activities throughout the day giving children the opportunities for social and emotional development. Here they learn to think about what they are feeling and how to work positively with those emotions. It is so important to be able to work and share

with other members of the class, where each pupil is equal and all the activities belong to everybody. The day also includes cognitive development — the children are given activities that involve thinking and developing the mind. Last but not least, is the physical development of the child. This involves the whole body as well as large and fine motor skills which play a huge role in your child learning to write – an important skill needing plenty of practice. It is important for parents to realise that it is not just the teachers’ role to educate their children but theirs as well. Children of pre-school age need to be able to follow instructions, do tasks themselves and listen to an instruction or request and carry it out. Children who have been taught these skills at home are more confident and understand solid firm boundaries. The child who has been given a free reign

By Carol Booth Principal of Cannons Creek Independent School

at home struggles to share, or follow instructions. When they do not receive instant gratification, discipline issues arise. All five year olds are very aware of what is right or wrong. Parents and teachers need to develop this starting even earlier than age five. They also need to learn consequences. A popular one is time out — the child sits away from any activity in the home for one minute for every year of their age. At school one cannot implement this and they need to be encouraged to comply with the instruction in a positive way. If this does not happen then the other pupils in the group ‘label’ the child as being difficult or naughty. By the time your child has reached preschool, it is important for them to know good manners; to say please and thank you, to wait their turn and to greet people correctly. I always talk about silent teacher (what we do and our children see is what they do) so it is so important for adults to have impeccable manners at home and to talk to each person in the family respectfully. In order for your child to obtain a good general knowledge about the world around them, take them to places over the weekend and most importantly talk to them about what you are seeing. Children are like sponges, but we need to check how they retell what they have absorbed. Happy outings! 

MONEY MATTERS

NEW YEAR'S REVOLUTION By Sue Torr Director at Crue Consulting

L

ike eating less and exercising more, taking charge of one’s financial affairs is usually top of the list when it comes to new year’s resolutions. Not having the time is never a good excuse — if you don’t organise your financial affairs then you’d better expect fiscal confusion. The first step would be to consult a certified financial planner®,but many people shy away for a number of reasons. The greatest deterrents when seeking financial advice are as follows:

You don’t earn enough money

A common misperception is that one needs to earn a large amount of money and have a substantial asset base before retaining the services of a financial planner. Ironically, the converse is true. The best time to seek financial advice is as soon as one starts earning an income. The earlier you start working towards your lifestyle goals, the longer you have to invest and the greater your opportunities to reach your goals. The words of the recent Allan Gray advert featuring deceased actor James Dean speak right to the heart of the matter. “Given time, imagine the possibilities”.

You will be sold something

Given the history of the financial services, this is a valid fear. If you seek financial advice from an advisor who is not independent (i.e. is linked to one insurance house) and who does not hold a Certified Financial Planning® certificate, then it is entirely likely that you will be sold a life policy, retirement annuity, education endowment or some other commission-based product. On the other hand, a Certified Financial Planner®, who operates as an independent practitioner and charges fees for his services, will provide you with a written financial plan — meaning the only thing you will be ‘sold’ is sound, independent financial advice.

It’s never going to happen to you

While you are working, your greatest asset is your ability to generate an income. And although it is idyllic to believe that disease, disability and life−altering accidents are disasters that visit others only, the truth is that your earning potential can be obliterated in one fateful instant. Protecting

February 2014 | the muse | 15

your income through cost-effective and appropriate insurance is one of the most valuable financial planning tools you can implement while you are still young and healthy. Although we don’t condone fearbased selling of insurance products, we do believe that a rational “what if” scenario planning exercise should be undertaken together with your financial planner to source the most affordable option for you.

Retirement is too far away to worry about now

It goes without saying that the last thing on anyone’s mind when they first embark on their career is retirement. When a person first starts working they generally have a multitude of financial goals that they want to achieve — vehicles, marriage, homes, travel and further education to name just a few. Funding for retirement is generally not a priority when you receive your first pay check. The reality, however, is that if you start working at age 25 and plan to retire at age 65, you only have 480 pay cheques to fund for your retirement. Every year that you delay funding for retirement, you need to spend a greater proportion of each month’s salary to catch up your retirement shortfall. Don’t delay. Start investing today.

You won’t understand it

A good financial planner should be able to summarise your financial plan in one completely understandable page. Further, a good financial plan should address three major areas of your portfolio. Firstly, appropriate risk cover solutions to protect yourself in the event of death, disability or disease. Secondly, an analysis of your investment needs and how to achieve your retirement and other investments goals (such as your children’s education or funding for a new home). Lastly, advice on how to structure your Will and do your estate planning effectively. It may include a debt reduction plan and sound budgeting advice. Don’t allow your decision to take charge of your financial affairs become one more failed new year’s resolution. Seek advice from the experts. Take ownership of your fiscal future and enjoy the benefits of a personal financial revolution. 

FAMILY CRUISE TO PORTUGUESE ISLAND AND MADAGASCAR

I

have never really contemplated a cruise, but when an offer is made to you by your parents to go on a whole hog of a family holiday that incorporates a 7-night cruise aboard the MSC Sinfonia, departing Durban and visiting Mozambique and Madagascar, it would be irresponsible to turn it down.

ALL ABOARD!

The boarding process and passport control was relatively smooth, and we were all issued with our cruise cards, which were to be used on the ship in place of actual currency. All meals were included, but any extras were for our account. All prices are in US dollars, and all purchases carry an automatic 15% gratuity on top of the list price. I didn’t find the prices prohibitively expensive, but the lack of physical cash means you need to keep your wits about you — your account can rack up quickly! A hint: Pre-buy vouchers for drinks, wine, cooldrinks and ice-cream. They provide significant savings to the on-board price.

A BLISSFUL BALCONY SUITE

We upgraded our cabin to a balcony suite, which was worth every cent. It gave us the opportunity to have our own haven of

tranquillity, out in the open if you felt like some quiet time, or to shake off some initial sea-sickness.

CONSTANT ENTERTAINMENT

At sea, the daily ritual revolved around eating, sunning yourself, and taking in the morning and afternoon talks or entertainment. First seating for dinner was at 6:30pm, followed by a show each night at 9pm. If we were docking somewhere for the day, then we’d get on to the excursion early morning, and get back to the ship mid-afternoon. There is a kids club on board, open mornings, afternoons and evenings, as well as a gym, board games, putt-putt, golf simulator and enclosed court. Entertainment is provided throughout the day and night by the myriad, cosmopolitan staff.

final destination. I found Madagascar fascinating: very tropical, very rural with little villages appearing around every corner. We found the lemurs and giant chameleons in the Berenty Reserve, and had a really wonderful day. The weather was tropical, and quite humid. In Portuguese Island it was very hot, with Madagascar slightly cooler, but still humid.

SAFELY BACK TO DURBAN

A 2-day sail back saw us dock in Durban on the 21st of December, with seamless disembarkation, great holiday memories — and slightly unsteady feet. 

PORTUGUESE ISLAND

In Mozambique, we visited Portuguese Island about 40km from Maputo. After a quick transfer in an inflatable zodiac we spent the day swimming and sunning on the beach, in beautifully warm water. Separate snorkelling excursions were available.

FORT DAUPHINE

Fort Dauphine in Madagascar was our

Lemurs are endemic to Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world. There are more than 60 species and subspecies of Lemur on the island, with the smallest being the 25g pygmy mouse lemur. Lemurs are primates with mixed characteristics that appear to combine features from cats, dogs and squirrels. Seen above is the Fat tailed Dwarf lemur. The Malagasy giant chameleon occurs in a wide range of habitats and can grow up to an astonishing 65cm.

A TOURIST IN CAPE TOWN

Our journey from Camps Bay took us to the waterfront, through the dry dock area, and then meandered through town visiting various historical sites and museums, with the opportunity to disembark, explore, and catch the next passing bus 15 minutes later. Eventually the bus wound its way up to the lower cable car station. The stop here was longer than the other stops to allow for a bathroom break and snack purchases. The views were stunning across the city bowl to the sea . Robin Island looked larger than life

appearing between Lion's Head and Signal Hill, with frothy waves stroking its shores. The final leg of the journey took us back to Camps Bay, where we could decide "to do it all again", knowing this time where the best photographic opportunities would be, and which stops appealed the most.

The city looks completely different from the top of an open topped bus. It is surprising how one finds oneself looking skywards to admire the various types of architecture making up the city skyline. Much of the intricate stonework and carvings are not visible from street level. We captured a few beautiful reflections in the windows of the city buildings.

FOOD FROM THE HEART By Heleen Meyer Pinelands resident, foodie and author of Food from the heart.

MANGO AND NECTARINE DESSERT

4 ripe nectarines with the skin, sliced in thin wedges 1-2 ripe mangoes, peeled and sliced 75 g pecan nuts, coarsely chopped 350-500 ml plain or Greek yoghurt or a mixture of the two 60-75 ml soft brown sugar mint for garnish 1. Use individual glasses or a large bowl for the dessert. The size and shape of the container will determine how much fruit you need. 2. Pack a layer of fruit and nuts in the bottom of the glass or bowl. Spoon a layer of yoghurt on top and sprinkle with a little bit of sugar. 3. Repeat the layers and end with a layer of yoghurt and a sprinkle of sugar. Refrigerate for 30-60 minutes and garnish with mint.

Packed with summer flavours

easonal fruits pack quite a punch and little can beat their flavour! Whether you eat them as a snack, in lunch boxes, as part of a meal or for dessert, it’s always delicious. Some of my favourite summer fruits include grapes, litchis, berries, nectarines, sweet melon, watermelon and mangoes. These are really versatile and great as the focus of a dish, like this dessert. When you use an ingredient which is already full of flavour, you don’t need much to prepare something special. The list of ingredients for this dessert is so short and yet it’s one of my favourite summer treats. You can easily vary the fruit – use mangoes on their own or try it with grapes or litchis.

Another benefit of making dessert with fruit is that it’s delicious, yet healthy. There are many variations on this theme, so you can add different nuts or add a layer of crumbled ginger biscuits or chunks of meringue next time. Just remember that the biscuits or meringue should still be crunchy, so don’t prepare the dessert too long in advance. Other ways to use summer fruit are in salads and salsas or a smoothie. Combine cucumber, green leaves, fresh herbs, peppers and green beans with fruit like mango or grapes for a fruity salad and serve it with fish or chicken. Make the most of summer’s offering and enjoy it in many different ways.

your next book club or women’s group to do a fun-filled dem or talk and share her passion with you. She is the author of two of her own award-winning cookbooks, Onthoukos/ Food from the heart and Kos is op die tafel! Both are ideal gifts for family or friends.
