BEYOND THE COMFORT ZONE – DIS MOS LEKKER Recently, Glynnis and I tried the new zip line experience with Cape Canopy Tours in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve (see Out & About page 20). I am not generally one for extreme experiences but now and then it does one good to get out of your comfort zone. Stepping over edge (quite literally) for the first time was "one small step for a man, one giant leap of faith", to borrow some of Neil Armstrong's words. It's good for one to occasionally suspend logic and caution and "just do it anyway," choosing to believe implicitly in the people and equipment - a reminder that the impossible can be done. With the novelty and buzz of the experience now over, what remains is the sense of accomplishment and the memory of the people involved - the fellow riders that give each other the confidence to jump (with a good dose of humour), the guides who know just how to get you through it and the crazy people who decided that it would be a good idea to string cables across ravines… and made it happen. It strikes me that South Africans are rather good at all these things - we have a get-on-anddo-it attitude and an inventive knack for turning unlikely possibilities into reality. Also, living in Cape Town, we really are spoiled for choice in the variety of places to visit, things to do and the mix of peoples right on our doorstep. As I am writing this on Heritage Day / National Braai Day I got to wondering - perhaps heritage has more relevance for us when we just look around us and not into the distant past - we are much more a product of the present, our surroundings and the people around us than we are of our ancestors and distant past. We are all creating an evolving, shared heritage every day and with everything we do together. Here's wishing you a lekker Summer, when it finally breaks - long may your braai fires burn! Enjoy the issue.

BIRDS IN PINELANDS

"I - am - the - Red - eyed - Dove" is one of the most commonly heard bird calls in Pinelands. This large dove, with a little ring of red skin around the eye, is very dark overall although it does have a pale forehead and a pinkish head and neck. Cape Turtle Dove is smaller and greyer, with a beady black eye, and Laughing Dove is much smaller with a blueish grey back and a peachy chest. Pigeons and doves are members of the same family and there is no strict definition of what makes a pigeon different from a dove, although in general, pigeons are much larger and it is only the Red-eyed Dove which begins to approach the size of a pigeon. Red-eyed Dove occurs in wooded suburbs and has slowly been replacing the open-country Cape Turtle Dove as Cape Town has become more wooded over the last few decades. So what is the outlook for the residential market in general in the next year? Much of the same really, but I would suggest a word of caution. I cannot see property prices increasing at the same rate for much longer. The basic economics of supply and demand will continue to dominate the process and it seems that more properties are being offered for sale recently. Buyer activity is starting to slow and although the Monetary

Committee did not increase interest rates at the last meeting they did indicate that interest rates are still in an upward phase.

I am sure that everyone is tired of hearing about the buoyant market, but it continues to be just that. The question being raised is whether property prices will continue to increase at the same pace as in the past 12 months. 3RD PINELANDS SCOUTS COME TO THE RESCUE Congratulations to Cameron Ball and Bradley Schrick who acted in a kind and professional manner at the scene of a car accident in Newlands Avenue in August. They had the presence of mind to assist one of the drivers, Morag Williams, who was alone, suffering from shock as she waited for her husband to fetch her - the car was a right off. The scouts from the 3rd Pinelands Scouts used their training in first aid to support Morag during the wait, helping to keep her calm. At a special celebratory finger supper Morag presented the 3rd Pinelands Scouts with a gift to express her appreciation for their help. The Theatrecraft Drama Students entertained a packed hall at Pinehurst Primary School, with a cast of 45 acting in a short play called Values, written and produced by Paula Pursch. The half hour play is set in the suburb of Firgrove – a take 9:24 AMPinelands, where the teenagers stand on accused by the Judge of "having no values" – the teenagers blame the parents, the parents blame the teachers, the teachers blame the government – it takes a quirky look at the old machine that dispenses

teenagers and how, when they collect value tickets, the youth (and the parents and teachers!) fall foul of authority – represented by a very amusing, well played 1960's khaki clad verkrampte cop. They dance to Franki Valli's Walk-like-a-Man with Gunslinger cowgirls shooting down Prejudice boxes to The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. The shorter play presented by a group of younger actors was Rumplestiltskin Racket and we are still left wondering how the golden thread was spun from straw!

YOUTH POSSIBILITY CENTRE UPDATE A core group of part time volunteers are hard at work furthering the dream of building a Youth Possibility Centre which aims to provide a variety of sports, recreation, leadership and other programmes for young people to learn life skills to help them connect with the real world of work and further education. Major accomplishments to date include running many coaching sessions at PNPS and Pinehurst PS this year after securing funding from the Old Mutual Foundation to purchase basketball equipment. In conjunction with Tsiba Ignition Centre, an Entrepreneurs Club was run on Friday afternoons this year for students from various local schools in grades 6 through FET. Two successful Family Fun Sports Festivals were held in 2012 and 2013. The YPC is close to securing a USA Hall of Fame basketball coach to run clinics in 2015 and share his experiences of building a community sports centre. Our number one priority right now is to raise funds to build a facility and to hire a full time Programme Manager and a team of Youth Leaders to run programmes. A basketball clinic will be held during the December holidays and interested people should contact Don via the details below. Don Shay, as YPC Founder and Trustee, has also presented the Youth Possibility Centre proposal to many stakeholder groups including Pinelands Ratepayers Association, Principals, Youth Pastors, Alderman Watkyns, School Sports Administrators, Sports Clubs, Lions Club, Rotary Club, Western Cape Education Department and CPOA management. HELEN KELLER KNITS FOR NOAH "The Society's Knitting Group decided that their next project would be for NOAH - Neighbourhood Old Age Homes, based in Woodstock. The group knitted beanies, scarves, blankets and gloves and the residents at NOAH loved their new warm, woollen gifts especially at this time of the year. The group's out-reach is growing from strength to strength thanks to the community's donations of wool for which the Society is most grateful." NOAH (Neighbourhood Old Age Homes) was established as an NPO 31 years ago and is situated in Woodstock and Khayelitsha. There are two houses alongside each other in Woodstock and each resident (there are about 12) has their own bedroom. It is very clean and neat and there is a communal lounge and dining area. THE RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY MARKET OUTLOOK Herschel Jawitz, CEO of Jawitz Properties says that the residential property market will remain much the same for the remainder of 2014 and at least the first half of 2015 The property market is currently experiencing a shortage of properties for sale with good demand from buyers across almost all price levels. The ‘first time buyer’ sectional title market up to R2 million and ‘family’ home market up to R4 million is experiencing the most activity. This imbalance between supply and buyer demand has resulted in better than expected price growth of between 8 -11% in nominal terms in 2014 and is likely to continue, even if at a slightly slower rate, for the remainder of 2014 and into 2015. Three key factors will continue to determine the direction of the market into 2015, namely bank lending, what happens with interest rates and consumer confidence.

In 1883 Sir William Smith had a rowdy group of boys in his Sunday School at a church in Scotland. He decided to create a club for these boys that would have them organized and disciplined. The outcome was the movement that is known as The Boys’ Brigade (BB). David Kent (the author here) served as an Officer in the BB for twenty years before emigrating from the UK to South Africa in 1976. In 1907 Baden Powell, soon after his return from the Anglo-Boer war in South Africa, met William Smith and, as a result of their discussions, Baden Powell formed a similar organization primarily based around outdoor activities after his own experiences in the African bush and veld. This grew to become The Boy Scouts Movement and now today includes girls and thus is just known as Scouts. Today both the BB and Scouts reach all countries 6:21 PM around the world. Both organizations have interest incentive schemes supported by badge awards. One of those awards in the BB and the Scouts is the Collector’s Badge and in some countries there is a specific badge for philately, better known as Stamp Collecting. Stamp collecting, described as the world’s greatest hobby (see article in the MUSE for October 2011), is a great way of earning this badge and it can become a most fascinating, entertaining and instructive hobby for young people. Illustrated here are just a very few of the stamps issued worldwide on the subject of Scouting itself. Today the Internet has vastly widened the scope of philately in that any given stamp can be researched to discover the background to the illustration thereon, the reason for the stamp’s issue and many other facets of its existence. It does not have to

October 2014 | the muse | 8 become an expensive hobby because, in order to start a collection, stamps can be obtained by asking all known friends and neighbours to contribute any incoming postal envelopes with stamps on them. Then also adults, both friends and parents could ask at the office where they work for all the postal stationery to be saved. October 11 is National Stamp Day in South Africa and the Pinelands Stamp Circle is supporting this event in two ways. For the month of October there will be a stamp collection display in the showcase in the entrance hall of Pinelands Library and then on Saturday 11 October they will have an exhibition stall in the mall of the Howard Centre. FRESH LOOK ROBELLE CELEBRATES 60 YEARS Established in 1954, Robelle was bought in 1974 by Collie Schulze, one of Robelle’s loyal customers at the time. Collie’s daughters, Sandy (only 18 at the time) and Joan joined her in the business and took over when their mother retired in 1985. When Joan retired In 2012, Lynn Bing, with many years of experience in the trade, bought Robelle and revamped the store, giving it a fresh new look. Sandy continues to work in the business providing expert, personal service to both new and old loyal customers. Charmaine, who worked for Yacht Squadron for many years, has also joined the Robelle team. Robelle has had three different premises in the Howard Centre over the years and has survived the many changes and upgrades.

PHS "WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION" Above: Pinelands High School’s 2014 dramatic production was Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution. This classic whodunnit ran from 11-17 August 2014 and was a resounding success with many of the nights being 'sold out'. Cape Town Mayor Alderman Patricia de Lille said she could not believe that these were High School children as it was brilliant, and that they should take this play on tour.

PHS UNDER 18 CHESS TEAM EXCELS The PHS Under 18 team played superbly to beat Swartberg 6 – 0, Maskam 5½ – ½ and Hexvallei 3½ – 2½ to claim gold at the Western Cape Playoffs, making them the best under 18 girls schools chess team in the entire Western Cape. In December they will be representing the province at Nationals, in Pretoria, for the third year in a row! In 2012 and 2013 they represented the province as an under 15 girls team. The excitement of the final is described by coach Mr Adam Reynolds "In the last 20 minutes the entire hall was virtually empty except for three of our players still fighting it out amongst the corpses of fallen chess pieces. I was so proud in that moment. To have half the team still playing in the dying

minutes of a match is quite something. It takes stamina, patience, and sheer determination to still be fighting long after all the other matches are finished. That moment characterises our team so well and for that I am proud. The fact that these last three matches produced two wins and a draw is wonderful, but as their coach I would have been proud regardless of the results."

PHS DOES WELL AT ESKOM SCIENCE EXPO Every year the PHS science staff (Natural Science, Life Sciences and Physical Science departments) work incredibly hard, giving up vast amounts of time, to assist the Grade 9s and Grade 11s with their science projects for the year. Following on from the Science Fair 20 projects were entered into Cape Town Eskom Expo – 14 received medals. Four of the projects were awarded gold medals and the students will represent Cape Town at the International Science Fair in Johannesburg in October. Given that only 31 projects are being sent from Cape Town to the ISF, the fact that four of them come from Pinelands High School is an incredible accolade for the school! Gold medal winners Fritz Keyzer and Josiah Senior with their project Producing an efficient portable sun tracking solar charger, also earned a special award – an Eskom prize for the Best Energy Project at Cape Town Expo. This means they were in the top 5 projects at Cape Town Expo. Gold medallists Josh Roman and Imaad Soeker worked on Making a cooling blanket. It has a removable inner portion that can be cooled in the fridge or freezer before being

inserted into the blanket. By cooling the body, it also helps to prevent heat-related nosebleeds during the night. Josh Roman and Imaad Soeker were invited to present their Expo project at the SA Innovation Summit at the Cape Town Stadium from 16-18 September. Elizabeth Martens and Jasmine Parry were awarded gold for their project Do bigger liquid volumes and densities make a glass beaker resonate at a lower frequency? Matthew Siebritz won a gold medal for his project The effects of light colour on photosynthesis of Elodea. Special awards went to Courtney Watt for Best Mathematical Project, awarded by the

Test Learning Centre; and Sydney Jacobs and Nonceba Radebe for Best Junior Water project, awarded by Dept. of Water Affairs. PINELANDS STREET CAMERA PROJECT

PINELANDS SAFETY FAIR AT JULIANA VELD With the theme "Meet your neighbour" the SAPS safety fair was held on Saturday 13 September, on a crisp spring day at Juliana Veld, a green belt that borders Morningside Road. Residents were treated to music by the Provincial SAPS Band conducted by Major Ashley Chandler, dog shows and emergency service demonstrations. Local security companies were represented and visitors could meet the people who serve and protect our neighbourhood. Several SAPS units attended the event and offered advice to residents. A licence plate recognition camera of the type to be used in the PSCP was demonstrated. Pinelands Community Policing Forum Chairperson, John Berry, and Pinelands Police Station Commander Lt Col Helena Mouton said that the Fair was a pilot project and would become an annual event. "Residents could socialise and get to know each other so that they could look after each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s properties and be the eyes and ears for the police. We appreciate the efforts of the armed response companies Pinewatch, Chubb and ADTâ&#x20AC;? they said. Pinelands Neighbourhood Watch was at the fair. They work closely with SAPS, the CPF, and the residents of Pinelands, organising frequent security patrols.

ER24 demonstrated how a child with a suspected neck injury is fixed to a transport board for emergency medical service. In the middle of their demonstration they were called away to a 'real' emergency! The fire department was present with a fire engine for inspection.

A plan for all seasons By Sue Torr Director at Crue Consulting Living in this beautiful city that can at times deliver four seasons in a single day, it’s not hard to spot the analogy between our four climactic seasons and the four stages of financial planning. A fuller understanding of the role that each chapter plays in our wealth creation journey is worth attaining.

SUMMER: GROWING AND GATHERING

Otherwise known as the accumulation phase, the summer of one’s path to wealth creation also happens to, thankfully, be the longest season. Spanning between the approximate ages of 25 and 60 years, one’s earning years can be likened to financial ‘farming’, making this season of planning the most pivotal phase to get absolutely right. Through careful preparation of one’s crops and adherence to the principle of not reaping more than you sow, the accumulation phase should be a time of amassing wealth before autumn descends. It is likely that one’s earnings will ebb and flow during this phase, just as periods of droughts or floods may affect a farmer’s harvest from time-to-time. During this season of financial planning, risk management tools can be effectively used to safeguard one’s income at a time when the ability to generate earnings is undoubtedly one’s greatest asset. As the wise farmer stores his grain for winter or for times of less productive yield, so too should we discipline ourselves to invest a portion of our earnings for our twilight years or for times when our earnings may be compromised.

AUTUMN: PRESERVING THE HARVEST

Enter a season of preservation, sustenance and ongoing appraisal. The extent to which one enjoys the autumn of one’s financial planning journey depends heavily on how deliberately one managed the years of earning. The retirement years are often referred to as the preservation phase and, due to an increase in human longevity, this season of one’s life can span a number of decades. Just as a farmer would ensure that

his grain is safely stored for the looming winter, so the retired investor should seek less risky alternatives for his investments. Having spent a lifetime ploughing, sowing, reaping and storing a portion of his yield, the autumn months are aimed at ensuring that what has been gathered is kept safe and is apportioned adequately to last the full duration of both autumn and winter. Wise investing, careful spending and regular evaluation will serve to ensure what Percy Bysshe Shelley so beautiful said: “There is a harmony in autumn, and a lustre in its sky.”

WINTER: APPORTIONING THE SURPLUS

Sound financial planning through summer and autumn may mean that one’s investments will outlast you, making it necessary to prepare plans for the dissemination of one’s wealth to the next generation. Akin to the plans a farmer would develop to ensure the succession of his farm lands, the winter of one’s financial planning journey needs to incorporate deliberate estate planning to ensure a meaningful legacy is gifted to a generation who both understands and appreciates the gift. A well-structured will, open conversation with one’s beneficiaries and plans to ensure a smooth endowment of one’s assets will do much to ensure that this phase of your financial journey is not a winter of discontent. Leaving an inheritance to one’s children is not inherently a birthright, but it can be a reminder that a lifetime of hard work is a forerunner to a bountiful harvest.

SPRING: NEW LIFE FOR YOUR LEGACY

Just as spring triggers the promise of new life and regeneration, so one’s passing will initiate the rise of your children and heirs to their rightful place – both as custodians of your legacy and as guardians of their own wealth. Farmers in their own right, the next generation has a pivotal role to play in ploughing, sowing, reaping and storing according to their needs, knowing that their own autumn and winter will arrive in time. As the farmer prepares his lands according to the seasons to reap the healthiest bounty, so too should we prepare and amend our financial plan as we move through the summer, autumn and winter of our days, safe in the knowledge that doing so will lead to yet another glorious spring. 

Even if our children have learnt to swim and especially if they haven't, the primary way to keep the pool area off limits when there isn't a responsible adult present, is by using physical barriers such as fences and self latching gates. The gate can be alarmed, as can the pool area, with motion 12:19 PM sensors, to alert the family if a child should manage to get inside the fence.

Have a clear view of your pool from the house ie remove any obstructive trees or bushes. This is so that you can make sure no one is in the pool area when they shouldn't be. Family pets are safer too if the fence is dog proof.

Teach your children to swim, and teach them safe behaviours around the pool. It is dangerous to run around a pool because of slipping and knocking one's head against the pool edge and/or falling into the water. It is dangerous to push people into the pool, to duck them or to dive bomb them. And if there is too much shouting - no one will hear if someone is screaming for help.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

Make sure that you can do CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). Have a phone near the pool with the necessary emergency service numbers on speed dial. Remember - no drinking and diving!

James de Lange Constant practice is a concept used by James, who is on a winning streak after conquering years of not being able to say his own name due to a severe stutter. He would like to highlight International Stuttering Awareness Day on 22 October by sharing his success through "The Sport of Speaking" – incorporating the costal breathing technique.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR STAMMERING

Most people take speaking for granted and do not realise how very difficult it is for a stutterer to cope in a situation when they cannot express their ideas. Oral presentations at school were always a daunting and difficult task, and time pressure makes fluent speaking even more problematic. Teasing from other children led to an emotional component and ultimately I felt I couldn't reach my full potential with my stutter holding me back. I was helped by a few speech therapists over the years, but there was never a lasting solution. I fell back into the avoidance techniques used by many stutterers - rather keeping quiet in a group conversation, avoiding speaking at all costs, stuttering uncontrollably and using other physical mechanisms such as closing my eyes and trying to force a word out.

HOW HAVE YOU IMPROVED YOUR FLUENCY?

In my matric year at PHS I was introduced to the McGuire programme and the book Beyond Stammering written by David McGuire - a stutterer himself who is now in control of his stutter by using the breathing techniques he has developed to overcome his speech impediment. By employing a sports mentality of "playing to win" the programme aims to free a person who stutters so that they can speak eloquently and remain in control, by breathing with the costal diaphragm and speaking on the airflow as one exhales. I do a daily warm up (just as an athlete would do), and we learn to conquer our fear by continual practice and facing our challenges head on - fighting fire with fire. The support of my family, before and after the course has really helped me. Some were so impressed at my progress that they became quite emotional when hearing the difference in my speech. Even my teachers at school were quite tearful when they heard how in control of my stutter I could be.

WHAT IS THE INCIDENCE OF STUTTERING?

About 1% of the population is affected by a stammer. Gareth Gates the pop idol singer has a serious stammer, but interestingly he can sing without a problem. He follows the costal breathing technique, and now coaches and supports others who may relapse and fall into a fearsome stutter again, ruining their daily lives and careers.

PRESENTING AT TOASTMASTERS

I am preparing for my fourth presentation at Pinelands Toastmasters. It is an environment where I can challenge myself, but be safe in the knowledge that the audience is sympathetic to my situation. As my fluency improves I find that I am able to portray the 'real me'. I also realise, however, that like dieting – there is no everlasting cure. I will have to work at my breathing exercises daily, and remember all the techniques taught about avoidance tactics and deliberate dysfluency if I want to remain a good, eloquent speaker.

HOW DO YOU FEEL IF SOMEONE FINISHES YOUR SENTENCES?

Now that I have better control over my speech and feel more confident, I am also forming better relationships with people. On the whole though, I think it is better for the listener to be patient and try and gauge whether the stutterer would like help with the word or not.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?

I enjoy reading motivational books, crime and adventure stories. Running and staying fit at the gym is important because I am a personal fitness trainer. I go to many of the McGuire courses, and facilitate as much as I can, as well as aiming to become a primary coach and course instructor. The next course in Cape Town will be from 20 - 23 November. WHEN DID YOU START STUTTERING?

I have been struggling with a stutter from a very young age, but it is difficult to pinpoint a cause, or an event that triggered it. Research has shown that there may be a genetic component, although there is no one else in my family who stutters. I am one of triplets and one theory in the development of a stutter is frequent interruptions when one is learning to talk and trying to join a conversation. The person stutters trying to "get a word in edgeways" and this becomes a habit.

PINELANDERS In between an eight-month long internship at Amazon Web Services in Cape Town, and his next stop in San Francisco, Steve Rybicki has returned to Pinelands High School to give back to his alma mater. He is combining his formal qualifications in Maths and Computer Science with his love for English by implementing a free online system of self study that he developed. The initial use of the software is for the study of poetry but the software will be applicable to all subjects.

THREE COMPONENTS TO THE SOFTWARE PROGRAMME

Travelling internationally with his parents who are academics at UCT, Steve was exposed to a variety of educational opportunities around the world, including the increasing use of technology in the classroom. He was delighted when Principal Jeremy Gibbon agreed to the implementation of his newly developed open source software. Beginning with a programme for studying modern poetry, Steve populated the site with an annotated poem, and a few different interpretations of the piece, including word meanings.

In the future, students will be able to use the authorship tools to add their own interpretation. Increasing the learning experience is the second component, where the student can access and listen to a video lesson on the poem, being given by the teacher, Mr Matthew Draper. Students can do the lessons online in their own time or catch up when they have missed a class. Finally Mr Michael Harris, history and drama teacher is recorded as he reads the poem with the correct stanza interpretation, and dramatic inference of the poetry, bringing it to life.

THE BEST WAY TO LEARN

The final component of the software revolves around the development of neural pathways enhancing the learning experience. The asking and answering of questions is one of the best ways of learning, says Steve, and so he has made sure that there is a self evaluation section of unambiguous questions with answers at the end of the course. Students can use this section which is built in the form of flash cards, to see how well they have understood the lesson.

THE FLIPPED CLASSROOM

This new teaching model has been successful in America, showing a higher learning success rate and fewer school

dropouts. The theory is that students will study the course material via online videos before coming to the class. The teacher will then set up the class with a more hands on approach for application of the knowledge learnt online, and will be able to facilitate the application of the lesson, as "a guide at the side", rather than lecturing to the class as a "sage on the stage".

THE SUCCESS AT PHS

Steve is grateful for the enthusiasm of the teachers at PHS and says he would not have been able to install the programme without their knowledge, innovative ideas, and cooperation in making the videos to post online.

STEVE'S NEXT INTERNSHIP ADVENTURE.

ASANA in San Francisco has offered Steve an internship working with software development aimed at unifying software solutions into one platform, which will hopefully do away with having a separate email programme that does not relate to any other software in your package. It should therefore increase productivity. The internship also provides a platform for cultural skills exchange. It is great work and great training for future work opportunities. When that is done, Steve hopes to return to South Africa to start work on his Honours degree. ď&#x20AC;ź

Steve has always loved Pinelands High School and it is no surprise that he is back to contribute what he can for the technological changes in modern day education. He was the recipient of the JP Kent Award, named after the school's first principal, for the student that most embodied the spirit of the school, always being involved in doing things for the school. Steve matriculated in 2010, and although he won the English and History prizes, he opted to study for a BSc. in Maths and Computer Science at UCT. Thereafter he accepted a contract with Amazon as an intern software developer in Cape Town.

NEOS MARMARAS

Greece by Nick and Mary Caldis Every year Nick and Mary take a break from Goodys to see their two daughters and four grandsons in Greece. They spend their holiday in Nick's birthplace of Neos Marmaras which has become a popular holiday resort in Northern Greece. Its beautiful three kilometre long beach is rated one of the top 10 in Greece. In 1922 when Nick's mother and other refugees had to leave Asia Minor they sailed to Neos Marmaras which was land belonging to the monks of Mount Athos. The monks helped the refugees by giving them land to build their village of Neos Marmaras. Today the village has a population of 6 000 people in winter and this swells to 100 000 in summer with tourists from around the world.

GAZING AT MT ATHOS FROM THE SEA

The most famous attraction in Neos Marmaras is a drive to the village of St Nickolas and from there to take the ferry to the next peninsula of Mount Athos, which is considered to be the Holy Land of Greece. No women are allowed on Mount Athos - this is a privilege reserved for men only - so the tourist ferry travels the length of the peninsula, not closer than 500m from the shore, for tourists to see the monasteries. There are 20 monasteries dating back to the 8th century. They were built by the monks with support from the Byzantine Emperors, and were fortified against the pirates of the day and other invaders. The Peninsula of Mount Athos is independent from Greece and is known as The Garden of the Virgin Mary. Seventeen of the monasteries are Greek, one is Russian, one Bulgarian and one Serbian.

NICK VISITS THE MONASTERIES

Nick and some of his male friends visited Mount Athos for two days during this last holiday to Greece. On arrival in Dafni they

had to present their permits to visit the monasteries, and their passports were checked to verify their gender. Then they were given a special certificate with which they could visit any of the monasteries and request accommodation. At the monastery they were welcomed with a cup of Greek coffee, a Turkish delight and a liqueur. Each monastery has a museum with books and artefacts from the 8th century. During the two day visit Nick and his friends visited four monasteries, mainly walking from one to the other, as most of the monasteries connect to each other by boat or by the beautiful hiking trails â&#x20AC;&#x201C; where in some places the vegetation is so thick you cannot see the sky. Monks and visitors dine together in huge dining rooms, catering for up to 1000 at a time. The food is vegetarian with some fish, and a monk will chant throughout the mealtime.

MORE THAN A HOLIDAY

Nick and Mary Caldis made South Africa their home in the 70's. It is wonderful for them to travel to Greece to meet with family and enjoy the beautiful scenery, beaches and the Greek food that they love. Nick adds that he is especially moved when he has the opportunity to visit the monasteries as he comes away with a special sense of spiritual renewal. ď&#x20AC;ź Main picture: Neos Marmaras (New Marmara) is a village on the Sithonia peninsula, in the Chalkidiki Peninsula, Greece - see map above. WHERE HAS COMMON SENSE GONE? By Carol Booth Principal of Cannons Creek Independent School

HOW DOES ONE DEVELOP COMMON SENSE?

A good question – research shows that this starts when children are really young, and are exposed to the practicality of tasks, for example in the kitchen when children help with washing up. How they do this task, how and where to place the clean dishes, which ‘dirty’ ones to do first and why. When they assist in the kitchen they learn the dangers of knives and other kitchen equipment. Learning how to use items in the kitchen also enlarges their vocabulary.

LET YOUR HOME BE A PLATFORM FOR DEVELOPING COMMON SENSE

Communication between mother and the child while doing all these tasks allows the child to try, fail, or succeed. For the young child to learn failure is so important. One wishes them to try and find another solution, and in this way common sense slowly develops; it is a road on which they have embarked. Not all 'common sense' learning tasks need to be done in the kitchen. Parents need to purchase tools

CAPE CANOPY TOURS What better way is there to see the beautiful rugged beauty of the mountains and ravines high up on the Hottentots Holland Mountains? Cape Canopy Tour zip lines traverse the area in a well designed unobtrusive way - and the thrilling ride gives a sense of freedom, a sense of privilege at being able to see the bare beauty of this normally hidden terrain. This enjoyable adventure comprises a series of zip lines, referred to as slides, over the Riviersonderend Gorge. After the safety instruction and kitting up in a full body harness, one is clipped to the line and given the opportunity to step off into the fresh air for a ride of a lifetime. The next platform always appears far away, but almost as soon as the ride starts it seems to race to the end - too soon, leaving the desire to "do it all again". Construction of the 11 zip lines and one suspension bridge started in 2013 and took approximately 9 months to complete. The Cape Canopy Tour company went to great lengths to preserve the ecology of this World Heritage site and stresses that the three and half hour tour is as much about the experience in nature, learning about the fynbos and the wildlife in the area, as it

is about the thrilling rides. Our guides, Asiphe Ngewu and Ricardo Juries, followed strict safety measures and coached each person before launching. It was equally thrilling to take the ride slowly and admire the waterfalls and vegetation below, as it was to throw caution to the wind and gather speed to the next platform. The longest slide is 320 meters! The tour is suitable for all ages (5 to 75) but be warned there is a fairly strenuous walk after the last slide, to get back to the transport vehicle, for a ride back to lunch (included in the cost). In fairness the walk was not hurried, with plenty of stops and beautiful clear stream water to slake the thirst on the way up. Our group had the added interest of seeing TV presenter Tanya Nefdt in action - on the slides and in front of the camera, interviewing owner Ryan Larkman. The heavy camera equipment was effortlessly transported across each slide hooked to the body harness. The start of the tour is in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve.
