This familiar predator is also known as the Fiscal Shrike or Butcherbird. Its blackand-white plumage and fierce habits, which include impaling its prey in larders on thorns or spiky fences, apparently recalled the early taxman, or Fiskaal. It hunts from a prominent perch and prey is varied, ranging from grasshoppers to chameleons, and even sometimes other nestlings, which it dismembers with its sturdy, hooked bill (although it is not a true raptor). The young are much browner and fluffier and are very noisy once they leave the nest, often attracting attention to themselves with their harsh begging calls. The very similar Fiscal Flycatcher has a shorter, whiter tail and slender bill, and doesn't occur in Pinelands. A Big Thank You to all our clients, family and friends for your support during the past year.
So 2014 turned out to be another good year for sellers and landlords in Pinelands and Thornton. Prices increased on average by 12% but it was rentals that exceeded expectations.
Looking to 2015 I believe that the residential market will continue to trade well but a word of caution on price expectations. If you are serious about selling you need to speak to a reputable agency.
At any given moment there would be more than five good applications for rental accommodation when available and at the time of writing not one of our tenants was in arrears. It is now almost impossible to find rentals under R5 000 pm with the average family home renting at about R15 000 pm.

SUCCESSFUL DUCK RACE AT LA GRATITUDE PRE PRIMARY SCHOOL From Renee Meissner, Principal, La Gratitude Pre Primary School. We would really like to thank the community who attended our annual Duck Race, and bought ducks, as well as the corporate community who supported us by supplying wonderful prizes and donations towards the event. We had a beautiful sunny day with a challenging wind, lots of kiddie activities and crafts to keep many busy and amused. Pinelands North and Pinelands High provided some
musical background entertainment, and the fire department and magician provided the interactive entertainment. There were a record number of ducks that were purchased this year – 2 700, that floated their way down the canal to the finish line. We donate a portion of our profits to the Pinelands Lions Club and we also support a School for disadvantaged children, which we donate to as well. We had some charities join us to share their items for sale, and included the Linawo children who wanted to make some pocket money for themselves by running their own stall. Dmitry Makogon was first prize winner of R2 000, Tracer security systems was the first duck over the line in the corporate race and Mishka Johaadien was the first child’s duck. It is always so interesting to see how many past parents and children support the event and add to the fun of the

COMMUNITY NEWS
PINELANDS GUIDES - 85 YEARS! Guides was established worldwide in 1910 after the Crystal Palace Scout Rally, after Lord Baden Powell noticed a patrol of girls who had joined the rally. Aimed at the advancement and upliftment of girls and women, Guides in Pinelands was established in April 1929. The first captain for the Pinelands patrol was Miss Joyce Day and the first meeting den was in the Homestead in Homestead Way. In 1941 the dreams of the building fund were realised when benefactor Mrs K Whitford Griffith laid the foundation stone of the new Guide Hall in Central Square and this is where the meetings are still held today. Guest speaker at the opening of the hall was Mr Richard Stuttaford who said "Guides and Scouts are organisations with the right ideals of love and service." The Guides in Pinelands continue with the traditions of learning skills within the home and in outdoor life. These are accompanied by fund raising for various projects, such as the high tea hosted for funds for stationery for the Thandanani safe house for children at risk. The slogan for South African guides is "Guiding girls towards a confident future", and the vision is described as "South African girls and women are valued and take action to change the world". Guides practice their various learning and charitable activities according to age groups, see below. The highest awards are achieved before the age of 25 – Rangers can earn themselves the Diamond Award and ultimately the Protea Award for service to the community and proficiency in life skills. If you would like to join Pinelands Brownies and Teddies with Guides in Pinelands Mother Ted, Averil Keller–Booysen. contact the following according to age group: To become a Teddy (4 to 6 years old) contact Mother Ted, Averil Keller–Booysen at 083 616 9978. Every now and then we come across a situation whereby the Purchaser is unsure whether he wants to put the property into his own name, or someone else’s name and the Purchaser is identified in the Offer to Purchase in his own name or Nominee. There is sometimes the mistaken impression that a Nominee can be nominated at any later stage. This is incorrect. Unless the Nominee is nominated, and accepts the nomination in writing, by midnight on the day that the offer is concluded (conclusion, in terms of Section 16 of the Transfer Duty Act is the date on which the Seller accepts the offer), the transaction itself attracts double transfer duty. In effect, it means that SARS views this as two separate transactions.

PNPS AWARDED ASHOKA ACCREDITATION AS A CHANGEMAKER SCHOOL Principal of PNPS, Ann Morton, describes the school's journey to becoming nominated as an Ashoka Changemaker School: "Earlier this year a grade 3 parent emailed me to ask if she could nominate our school to get Ashoka accreditation as a ‘changemaker school’. This organization seeks to create and encourage world change through the development of core skills like teamwork, empathy, creativity and leadership. This email started us on a long and gruelling process as we had to fill in a 27 page questionnaire, have 3 ‘fellows’ spend the day with us at school, and then finally 4 of our staff were interviewed. This resulted in our school being chosen as an
Ashoka Changemaker School, one of only 4 in South Africa so far. We join 100 schools internationally who have this status! 43 schools in South Africa, were nominated. 14 schools visited, and 7 schools were interviewed. Finally 4 were chosen!" Congratulations to all who have created a school who encompasses creativity, empathy, leadership and teamwork!"
WHAT IS ASHOKA? Ashoka believes that in our fast changing world we need a critical set of skills, including empathy and team work, in leadership and changemaking, to solve complex social problems and be successful in the world. PNPS is known as an
inclusive school, which resonates with the theme "Everyone a Changemaker World" where each person regardless of age or background can play a part in shaping the future of the world, with confidence, skills and support to drive the change. The name Ashoka is after an Indian leader who in the 3rd century BC renounced violence and dedicated his life to social welfare and economic development – his creativity, global mindedness and tolerance are an early example of social innovation. See www.ashoka.org.

YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CHILD'S LIFE
TENNIS CLUB
One thing that is happening more and more in our modern day world is the increase of children who are being raised by separated parents, especially noticeable when the Christmas holidays come around. The most important thing to remember is that no matter how the two parents have separated – more often than not with bad feelings – that there is only one person who pays the real price and that is the child. Parents need to own that no matter which parent has decided to move on, both need to deal with it. Each parent should sit down and make a list as to what they wish their new life to be like, and a separate list for what they would like for their children. When their parents split up, children take the blame squarely on their shoulders and will internalise that if they had done ‘X’ in a different way, then their parents would still be together. It is heart-breaking when parents place their own personal issues before that of the child.

with both parents is crucial to the development of the child and once they grow up and mature, you will be proud that you have a clean slate and your child will continue to have a good relationship with you. If however, you have kept the child away from the other spouse, then they will harbour ill feelings towards you.
COMMON GROUND TO PROVIDE STABILITY
A child needs both parents; they have not divorced either of them. Each parent needs to develop their new set of rules for the home and accept that the other spouse, now in their new abode, may have completely different rules. There also needs to be common ground where the child still continues with the same values
With regard to school, each parent needs to inform their child’s school and they need to receive all emails or communication from the school so that they are informed as to what is happening in their child’s life. When money needs to be given to the school for outings etc. the parents need to take ownership and balance what is needed so that the child does not feel the effects of the financial battle that may be going on between their parents. Financial matters of any sort are for the adults to deal with, and not for the children to worry about.
HOW TO SHARE CHRISTMAS
Even more important with Christmas around the corner is to ensure that the child spends quality time with each parent where possible. One year they can wake up with Mum and the next with Dad. One needs to learn not to be selfish – remember it is not for you but for your child! If they spend the ‘waking up’ time with you then lunch could possibly be spent with the other parent if both parents live in the same town. As long as both parents are positive and create a good working relationship, your child will develop knowing a true sense of self and what relationships are all about. Children learn from our behaviour and when they are older will re-enact what we have done.
TWO LOVING HOMES
But it is not all doom and gloom. If you sit down and work through this process without the emotions, you will have a positive child who will flourish even though they have parents in different homes. And when the time comes, they will be able to say that it was better to have two loving homes than one constant battlefield.
THE CHALLENGE
And so, I challenge all divorced or separated parents to share, be reasonable and let your child remember this Christmas as one of the best thus far!

After completing the Zanokhanyo Job Readiness Course, Yolanda Mtakatya found work at a local documenting company. Starting as a Preparation Clerk, she was promoted after only three months to the position of Quality Check Team Leader. By the end of the year, she had made her mark and received an award for being the Team Leader of the Year. Getting promoted was not the only exciting thing that happened to this young mother – she also got married! When asked how she manages to do so well in her job she said that Zanokhanyo helped build her confidence and perseverance and taught her valuable interviewing skills and the importance of punctuality. She also emphasized that prayer played a big role in all of her achievements, saying that she has never stopped praying.

Phambili is a non-profit organisation that grew out of Pinelands Methodist Church in response to fires in Langa in 2000. Since then many Pinelanders have been, and still are, involved in its projects and management. We currently run three projects that aim to engage with the needs of the surrounding communities: a job-readiness course that equips those searching for work with skills to be able to do so effectively (Zanokhanyo); a volunteer programme at Mokone Primary School in Langa (Umthombo); and Phambili Print & Design which offers high quality digital and litho printing for businesses and individuals as a means of raising funds for the other projects.
engage with them. Phambili ngeThemba is dedicated to seeing transformation come to the informal area of Langa and the greater Cape Town region. We aim to do this by enriching vibrant communities economically, educationally and spiritually, encouraging them to contribute to the future with dignity and respect. The hope is that Phambili might have the opportunity to share their experiences of working with people in need over the years and the stories of hope of people they have come into contact with, so that they can be an uplifting influence to others.

PINELANDERS Meet Paul Stohrer, Rotarian and co-ordinator of the internationally acclaimed Carols at Kirstenbosch Gardens. Paul is seen here with his wife Julia, and daughter Amy – who has played a role in every nativity pageant held at the Carols at Kirstenbosch since she was five years old. 20 YEARS OF CAROLS AT KIRSTENBOSCH
FEATURED PRE CAROL ENTERTAINMENT
This event is a fabulous outdoors experience perfect for a summer evening and is very popular amongst Capetonians and international visitors. Wowing the crowds this year before the carols will be Sterling EQ on Thursday; Woodworks on Thursday and Friday; Anecdote, Irish Dancers, Pipes and Drums on Saturday; Marimba bands and the Gugulethu Tenors on Sunday. The main Carol singing is accompanied by the Cape Town Concert Brass and the Cape Town Male Voice Choir. Paul comments that all these musicians perform on a charitable basis for the Carols at Kirstenbosch, which means that plans can change at the last minute. The line up also includes a nightly Nativity Pageant, in which Amy has played a part for many years.
NUMEROUS CHARITIES WILL BENEFIT
The candles have now been replaced with glow sticks – a wise safety measure. Pick'nPay provide the glow stick, and carol sheets. The funds raised from the event, which draws in 6 000 people per night over four nights, is distributed in part back to the gardens, and then to charities supported by Rotary, which include Literacy programs for teachers and learners, upgrading

school facilities, and medical equipment for Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, amongst others. One of the flagship projects being the Rotary Family Health Day. Bring your picnic basket and enjoy an evening of music and relaxation at Carols at Kirstenbosch. Tickets on sale at www.webtickets.co.za or at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens from December 16th.
A MUSEUM FOR RED CROSS WAR MEMORIAL CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL
Paul's charitable work does not end with the carols – he runs an NPO from offices at Beautiful Gate – the Philippi Economic Development Initiative, building and supporting local businesses in an effort to encourage economic growth in the Philippi area. Rotary funding for a museum at the Red Cross Children's Hospital is now available and Paul will be managing this project with help from fellow Rotarians, the Red Cross Children's Hospital Trust, his wife Julia, and historian daughter Nicole Adams. This exciting project will include the history of the hospital which was initially funded from salaries donated to the building of a living memorial – the Children's Hospital.
YOUNG ROTARIANS
Paul belongs to the Kirstenbosch Rotary Club which sponsors 2 Earlyact clubs at Rustenburg Girls Junior School and Oakhurst Girls Primary; and 2 Interact clubs at Rustenburg Girls High School and Rondebosch Boys High School. These young Rotarians have successfully raised funds for a number of projects this year and in August the Rustenburg Girls High School Interact Club was awarded the prestigious Presidential Citation for 2013 - 2014. Paul describes Rotary as a world wide organisation which began in 1905 with the founder Paul Harris in Chicago, Illinois. Members meet to volunteer their time and skills to help others in their community
HOW DOES PAUL RELAX? Paul enjoys spending time with his family, playing a bit of squash, cycling, and walking his dogs, Watson, a black Scottie and Puddles, a Maltese poodle. To speak to Paul about Rotary call 083 270 9286 or email info@kirstenboschrotary.co.za. To speak to a contact at Pinelands Rotary call Bev McDavid at 021 531 8909.

The Carols at Kirstenbosch previously known as Carols by Candlelight has been running for more than twenty years. This popular family event is organised by Kirstenbosch Rotary Club with sponsorship from Pick'nPay, and Paul feels privileged to be able to use his business expertise in IT and event management to see that the Carols in the Gardens goes smoothly. This year the concert will run from Thursday 18th December, a discounted evening, until 21st December. The gates for the concert open at 5pm, and the concert begins at 8pm. Come early for a good spot on the lawn.

Back to Basics
SURVIVING THE CHRISTMAS "SPEND"
It’s starting to look like Christmas. The malls are a maze of merriment and ablaze with bright baubles, and as retailers fall over each other to sell you the fallacious promise that possessions are more valuable than experiences, we – the consumer – are left dazed, confused and all-too-often indebted. As the season of excess approaches, let’s gift ourselves a moment to plan how to survive the season without entering 2015 debt-laden and depressed. It all starts with going back to basics.
THE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS
You don’t need to be Christian to appreciate the broader meaning of this season. For many South Africans, December is a time to take leave, spend meaningful moments with family and friends, and unwind. It is a period of rest and rejuvenation. A time of reflection and repose. A season of giving, celebrating and breaking bread together as we feast on fellowship. How this beautiful season became so horrendously hi-jacked by the retail industry is a topic for another discussion, but the challenge this Christmas is for each and every one of us to rediscover the beauty of Christmas free from the pressure to out-purchase the Potgieters.
DOING WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY
Research into consumer behaviour is unanimous – as humans, we derive more joy from experiences than we do from purchasing material possessions. In fact, some research has found that consumers derive three times more pleasure from the anticipation of the purchase than from the actual act of purchasing – not least because they are plagued by buyer’s remorse and gut-wrenching guilt. So, if spending time with loved ones makes us happy, and spending too much money makes us sad, how is it that so many of us opt for the latter to the detriment of the former?
CHINESE PROVERB
IT DOESN'T NEED TO BE A TIME OF EXCESS
The answer is quite probably that, as consumers, we so easily become victims of over-stimulating retail environments and marketing messages that lead us to desert our very own value systems. We are tempted to accept that in this season of excessive eating, drinking, resting, fun, feasting and fellowship, it is inevitably also a season of excessive spending. And when everybody else is blowing their bonus on this season’s must-have gaming station, the power of the herd mentality is prone to usurp logic. The truth, however, is that December is no extraordinary month. But for the extra bottles of bubbly and tender turkey, the same set of fiscal commitments exist as in any other month – and January brings a whole new set of financial commitments which include potentially high cost items such as school uniforms, school fees, premium increases, to name just a few.
IT REALLY IS THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS
In getting back to basics, we hold within us the power to reclaim Christmas and breathe new life into old adages such as “it’s the thought that counts”. Because it really is. In returning to basics, we provide ourselves the opportunity to teach our children the value of both time and money. Whether we help our children plant herb pots, spray-paint pine cones or sell home-made Christmas cakes, we are gifted not only with precious experiences but with the opportunity to instruct our children in environmental care, the benefits of recycling and the need to support local business.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Before we succumb to mall madness, let’s rediscover the pleasure of Christmas in the simplest of things. Let’s buy local, visit craft markets and support small business. Let’s fortify the art of recycling, re-using and repurposing goods for the benefit of all. Let’s relieve each other of the pressure to spend, compete and compare. Let’s rediscover the satisfaction of small gifts given with great love, because in the words of Winnie-thePooh, “Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in our hearts”.

We believe that every South African should have a financial plan. A plan that helps to build and protect wealth and aims to secure a financially stable future. Regardless of one’s income, status or net worth, we believe that a financial plan is important for one’s self-worth. Financial planning is not the privilege of the impossibly wealthy. It is the right of every individual who wishes to protect their financial future and the futures of their loved ones.
There’s no better time than the present to take the first step towards financial well-being. A year from now you may wish you had started today.

CHILE
Deserts, volcanoes, earthquakes and more on the journey to see the ALMA Radio Telescope near San Pedro de Atacama - at an altitude where oxygen is scarce and UV radiation dangerously high. By Richard Lord.
Ultraviolet radiation warning monitor at ALMA Operations Support Facility. Richard Lord in Santiago
In April this year, three colleagues from the SKA Organisation in Manchester, and I, travelled to the Republic of Chile, to visit the ALMA Radio Telescope. ALMA stands for “Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array”. It is composed of 66 high-precision antennas, and is located on the Chajnantor plateau in Northern Chile’s Atacama desert, at an altitude of 5 000 metres. The purpose of the trip was to learn as much as possible from the ALMA team. Their experience regarding the integration and verification of such a large instrument will benefit the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which is cosited in the deserts of South Africa and Australia. (see Muse Dec 2012/Jan 2013).
THE CAPITAL – SANTIAGO
We arrived in Santiago, the capital city of Chile, after a ten-hour flight from Johannesburg to Sao Paulo, and another four-and-a-half hour flight from Sao Paulo to Santiago. With a population of nearly six million people, Santiago is also the largest city in Chile. Skyscrapers and unattractive apartment blocks cover the horizon, but the city centre does have a peculiar
www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za
earthy charm – and many stray dogs. The influence of the Roman Catholic Church is also evident with many beautiful churches, decorated with exquisite ornaments and religious statues.
SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA
From Santiago we flew to Calama in North-Eastern Chile, followed by a onehour bus ride to San Pedro de Atacama. San Pedro de Atacama is a small town, with only a few thousand inhabitants, but it seemed to buzz with just as many tourists, with one B&B located next to the other. It is a charming town though, and the hub for many tourists visiting the region. I wished I had had more time to explore the surroundings, and soon came to appreciate what brings so many tourists to the world’s driest desert – Northern Chile has a majestic beauty that is different from any other place I have been to. The mountains are gigantic, dwarfing the Hottentots Holland mountains that we so admire when travelling towards Worcester from Cape Town. Due to the mineral content of the soil (or so I have been told),
the mountains sometimes display shades of orange and purple and green, adding to their grandeur. And then there is the Licancabur Volcano, which used to be a sacred place for the Inca Empire, a place where the Incas would carry out religious ceremonies to worship the sun. Laguna Chaxa, a national reservation located at the heart of the Atacama salt pan, is inhabited by three species of flamingos year-round. Or you could join a “Tour Arqueologico”, to learn more about the rich cultural inheritance. The entire region soon reveals a mystique that is fascinating and makes you wish you could stay longer.
THE THIN AIR AT ALMA
The ALMA Radio Telescope is equally impressive. At an altitude of over 5 000 metres, the relative lack of oxygen is a major concern, apart from the extreme temperatures, solar radiation and dry air. I also experienced the unsettling feeling of having very little energy to perform any physical exercise, feeling slightly light-headed, and also developing a minor headache before returning to the

Operations Support Facility (OSF), which is at a modest altitude of 2 440 metres. But it was worth it! A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stand on top of the world and admire the human accomplishment of an international effort.
THE IQUIQUE EARTHQUAKE
The cherry on the top of this extraordinary trip was my first-ever experience of an earthquake. The 2014 Iquique earthquake
Laguna Chaxa salt lake in the Salar de Atacama
struck off the coast of Chile on 1 April, with a moment magnitude of 8.2. It even triggered a tsunami of up to 2.11 metres that hit Iquique. It wasn’t quite as dramatic at San Pedro de Atacama, but nevertheless an unforgettable experience. The earth was shaking for quite a long time, maybe two minutes, and even the locals said that it was the biggest earthquake they had witnessed for many years. How perfect was the timing
of this trip!!! The aftershocks during the next few days were equally exciting. Except, perhaps, the aftershock that struck Santiago on my way back to South Africa. Lying in my hotel bed on the 10th floor, at midnight, and suddenly hearing the entire building groan and squeak under the stresses of being shaken to and fro, I had to admit that enough was enough, and it was time to go home. 

OUT AND ABOUT
Little Streams Take the right fork off Spaanschemat River Road and follow Klein Constantia Road towards Klein Constantia Wine Estate. On your right you will see the entrance to the charming property called Little Streams. Bequeathed to the YMCA, the enchanting gardens are supported by the restaurant which serves delicious and generous lunches and teas under the trees. You can take your own wine (and a well behaved small dog on a leash). Afterwards, take a walk through the gardens, over the wooden bridge to the swings and climbing net; and what was previously used as a
picnic area – but no more due to baboon raids. Here you can find the plaque giving tribute to Harold and Muriel Jones. For the energetic there is a path from this garden leading up the hill and around to vistas over the Klein Constantia vineyards. To get back to your parked car, just follow the little stream. Opening Hours Monday to Saturday from 8:30 am to 5pm. Enquiries and bookings 021 794 3413. Ask about their conference and wedding facilities.

FOOD FROM THE HEART By Heleen Meyer Pinelands resident, foodie and author of Food from the Heart, and the new Make 5 /Maak 5.
BERRY PAVLOVA
250 ml (1 cup) Greek yoghurt 250 ml (1 cup) crème fraîche 1 vanilla pod, split open, seeds scraped out 4 extra large egg whites, at room temp 250 ml (1 cup) castor sugar 5 ml (1 tsp) vanilla essence 5 ml (1 tsp) finely grated lemon rind 10 ml (2 tsp) lemon juice 300 g mixed berries of your choice, such as blueberries, raspberries and strawberries fresh mint leaves 1. Mix yoghurt, crème fraîche and vanilla seeds well. Place the pod in the mixture and refrigerate until needed. 2. Preheat the oven to 130 °C. Line a large baking tray with baking paper. Lightly grease with oil in a large circle. 3. Place egg whites, castor sugar, vanilla essence, lemon rind and juice in a large glass mixing bowl. Beat with an electric beater for about 10 minutes, or until the egg whites form stiff peaks when you lift the beaters. The eggs should be glossy and fluffy, with a marshmallowy texture. Don’t beat too much – it will become dry. 4. Spoon mixture onto the baking tray and carefully spread into a 24 cm circle – it doesn’t need to be perfect. 5. Bake for 1 hour or until just golden brown and set. Switch the oven off and allow the pavlova to cool down completely in the oven. 6. Remove the vanilla pod and spread yoghurt mixture in an even layer on top of the pavlova. Arrange berries on top and decorate with mint leaves. Tips 1. Use any fruit, such as figs, pomegranate seeds and grapes. Seasonal fruit like nectarines are delicious with berries. 2. When beating egg whites to stiff peaks, use a stainless steel or glass mixing bowl, not plastic. The beaters and the bowl must be very clean and dry, as a greasy residue will prevent the eggs from forming stiff peaks. 3. Eggs that are kept at room temperature beat to a much higher volume, than those from the fridge. 4. Add the yolks to scrambled eggs or a fritatta.

Recipe from Make five / Maak vyf Serves 8
'Tis the season for berries The festive season is nearly upon us and has various connotations for everyone. Some think of it as the time for giving, some dream of snow-dusted streets, warm crackling fires and mistletoe, others think of twinkling lights and ribbons. For me, it is a season of sunshine, swimming pools, happy kids, family meals and of course… fresh berries! I believe that we eat with our eyes, and nothing is more beautiful than these little gems from nature. Strawberries, cherries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries – all glowing with that rich colour. Having berries around is the easiest way to make pretty food. To make the most of the short berry season, I add berries to many different meals. Anything from a fruit salad at breakfast, on crumpets, as a quick snack, added to

a refreshing drink and even a salad with chicken, fish or pork. I also add berries to quick desserts, like vanilla ice cream and roasted nuts or to a crumble for added colour. Then of course, these sweet and juicy fruits seem to hold a special place on the South African festive table, as the "cherry" on top of a light pavlova. This pavlova from Make five is a little easier than most with a marshmallowy texture on the inside. The combination of crème fraîche and Greek yoghurt is definitely a treat for this special time of year. Although other fruit is just as delicious, the berries add that beautiful, festive colour and a refreshing break from a heavy pudding. Sophia Loren said, ‘The most indispensable ingredient of all good home cooking: love for those you are cooking for.’ Happy holidays and good cooking! together with your choice of Food from the heart or Onthoukos for only R299 – that’s 2 recipe books – offer valid till January 2015. Make five is not only filled with ideas for the holiday season, but also shows you how to make the most of everyday ingredients – each used in five delicious ways.
