These giant birds are common around Cape Town's wetlands where they hunt for fish, and are often seen circling in the thermals over Pinelands. In recent years they have become very opportunistic in their feeding habits and large groups have frequented chicken and pig farms on the Cape Flats where they feed on discarded offal. This bonus food supply has allowed the population to grow and birds fly all the way from Cape Town to Dassen Island off Yzerfontein on the West Coast to feed their chicks. They only breed at this one site in the Cape, where they have started to become a nuisance to conservation, as they have learnt to feed on the endangered cormorant nestlings there. We are well into the new year, but this is the first chance we have had to wish our readers health, happiness and success in the year ahead. We hope it's a great year for you. Pinelands is a sought-after suburb for prospective home owners, because of its proverbial village lifestyle, its excellent schools and range of retirement homes. Looking through this edition, it is dominated by stories on these themes – They may not be the most glamorous of topics, but they are the stuff of everyday, real life of most residents. So, we will continue to tell you more about your fellow Pinelanders during the year and hope you learn something surprising about that person you thought you knew so well, or introduce you to someone you didn't know about. If you know of anyone we should feature, please do let us know. We love hearing from you. As Glynnis and I do not have children, we did not have a connection to the "school people" network before starting the Muse. We do now have a lot of contact with schools and it is interesting for us to realise the connections between people through this. Reading the captions on photos for school stories may sound dull, but it is interesting to see familiar surnames and see the likeness in the children to the parents we know. It helps to round out our understanding of them and their lives beyond the business relationships we have. Local is lekker! Enjoy the new edition!

So what can we expect for 2015?

It would appear that we are starting the New Year with the residential market still on a broadly strengthening activity thread, with stock constraints continuing to drive prices. A minor concern is that affordability levels may start deteriorating as the increase in income levels is not keeping pace with the increase in property prices. Sellers must remain realistic with their asking prices if they are serious about selling their homes.

If we look at 2014 the average increase in property prices in Pinelands was 6.2%. In Thornton prices increased by 13.5% and in Sectional Title by nearly 15.1%. This was to be expected as demand for lower priced accommodation surged. Unit sales fell from 144 to 129 in Pinelands, remained the same in Thornton at 51 units and increased slightly in Sectional Title from 66 to 70. There were 19 sales of properties priced above R3m which was the same number as last year.
The rental market continues to be active and the demand for accommodation continues to rise with rentals expecting to increase by 8% this year. At the time of writing we do not have a single tenant in arrears.

It is always interesting to reflect on past predictions for the residential market in which I said that prices would continue to escalate, and that demand would continue to outstrip supply. Where I went wrong was that I thought the interest rates would rise more than they did.

PINEHURST WINS FIRST PRIZE IN THE COLLECT-A-CAN COMPETITION
THE PINEHURST CHALLENGE
Collect-a-Can’s annual CAN Craze Competition challenges all individuals and groups with creative minds to build the best inventive structures from 300 or more used cans for a chance to win their share of R60 000 in prize money. The competition runs from July to September annually. This year the first prize of R30 000 was won by Pinehurst Primary School in the Western Cape who sculpted a beautiful whale that included fine detail of sea life and artistic skills. Below: The winning whale sculpture and Mrs Cheryl Gleeson (Gr 7 Teacher) who co-ordinates the can collection and design.

FANTASTIC MATRIC RESULTS AT PHS Pinelands High School had 180 students in the class of 2014. They achieved a 100% pass rate with 143 achieving a Bachelor’s pass. The top achiever was Sam Pothier with 8 distinctions, and a phenomenal 96% for AP Maths. He was followed by Tiffany Henning, Ridge Swartz and Joshua Cornell all of whom achieved 6 distinctions.

PINELANDS LIBRARY CHRISTMAS TREAT On Monday, 15 December 2014, the beautifully decorated Hall at Pinelands Library was the scene of a lively Festive Lunch and Party for the children and Staff of the Linawo Children’s Home. The happy occasion was sponsored by the Staff and Friends of Pinelands Library with additional donations from the public. The event included a delicious lunch, party snacks, entertainment and a visit by Father Christmas, who delivered gifts and many a hearty “Ho Ho Ho”! This was certainly an event worth repeating.

BLING EVENING AT PINELANDS TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL AWARDS DINNER The Pinelands Tennis Club (PTC) 2014 annual dinner took on the theme of bling with members joining in with outrageous dress and jewellery. Club members were recognised for their achievements during the year, and trophies were presented to the winners of the club championships that had been played the same afternoon. Apart from the tournament winners, the Club has special awards for members who have been notable during the year. They are nominated by popular vote and the Executive Committee then chooses the winners. HELEN KELLER SOCIETY KNITTING GROUP DONATES TO UKUTHEMBA FOUNDATION HOME The Knitting Group at the Helen Keller Society gave a donation of blankets and teddy bears, knitted by the residents, to the children at the Ukuthemba foundation family home in Pinelands. Not sure who was more thrilled, but the children and the staff were very grateful for the donations and Mrs Smit and Mrs du Toit from the Society just loved the children. "It is a wonderful, safe home and all the children are very well taken care of and are happy! It is so nice to see. Congratulations to Jenny for all her hard work", said Mrs du Toit. The Ukuthemba Foundation in conjunction with home from home aims to provide safe and caring, permanent homes, for children from situations of extreme poverty, drug abuse or families affected by AIDS. In this environment a few children with a house mother, can be nurtured, attend local schools and be integrated into society with love, education and protection. When school opened this year, the Cannons Creek Grade 7s found themselves in high school and not as the seniors of the primary school, as would previously have been the case. This brings Cannons Creek in line with international practice where year seven is usually part of the high school. The main reason for the change is that the grade 7 curriculum is, in fact, part of the high school syllabus. In South Africa, a child is expected to complete 12 years of formal schooling. This is broken into four phases of three years each. The last two phases, the General Education and Training (GET) phase (grades 7, 8 and 9) and the Further Education and Training (FET) phase (grades 10, 11 and 12) are designed to be part of the high school programme, yet, in South Africa we still place grade 7 in the primary school environment.
Above: Grade 7 with teacher Mr James Cripps The age for school entrance is now higher than it used to be, with the result that pupils have often “outgrown” primary school half way through their grade 7 year. This move has enabled Cannons Creek to run their High School on the basis of an integrated Middle School and Senior School allowing the teaching and extra-curricular programmes to be more appropriately differentiated. Mr James Cripps, a specialist Grade 7 teacher who has previously taught in the United States and at St Andrews Prep School in Grahamstown, joined Cannons Creek this year as the new Grade 7 teacher. The Grade 7s are loving their new school experience where, even though they are in high school, great care has been taken to ensure that the transition goes smoothly and that they do not simply get thrown in the deep end.

Cameron Stuart and Jed Johnson have successfully completed their second “Wings at our feet” cycle ride to raise awareness and support for CANSA. Their first journey was featured in the March 2013 edition of the Muse where they cycled 2 234 km from Cape Town to Kosi Bay. Taking up from where they left off, Jed and Cameron flew to Richards Bay, where they set off on the road to Harare. The planned route took them through Swaziland, the Blyde River Canyon and then through Beit Bridge into Zimbabwe. They then cycled up the Eastern border of Zimbabwe to Harare. In their video “Africa Awaits” they comment “Adventure brings freedom to the soul, and allows us to break the confines of city life”. Cameron is in his third year of photography studies, and Jed is doing property studies

Rain Water: Catching rain water from a tin shelter along the N2, between Richard's Bay and Swaziland, was noted by a local person who reprimanded the cyclists and gave them “clean” water from a bucket in their spaza store.
Chameleon: This was on the worst stretch of road to cycle on in Zimbabwe. It had the highest density of heavy traffic, but no shoulder to ride on. "This little critter was trying to gap it across the tar so we stopped to ferry him across," says Cameron.

The first project, a shoe drive, collected an overwhelming 1502 pairs of shoes in 4 days. The next drive was on the 5th December called "Buckets of Love" where the children packed 500 buckets for
Catholic Welfare Development. It was hot and the buckets were heavy, but there were no complaints, in this, their first exposure to real voluntary work. This is their first official year, and there will be a number of collection drives, and loads to learn, but the passion to give back is what they strive for.

Cannons Creek Independent School is very proud of the Class of 2014 who once again achieved a 100% pass rate. 84.2% of the school’s 20 matriculants obtained a Bachelor’s Endorsement. Six of the 19 Matric pupils who completed the exams achieved A aggregates. (One pupil could not complete the exams due to illness). The Principal, Mr Mike van Haght, said that he was very happy with the results as the class of 20 Matric pupils accumulated 57 distinctions among them. There was one pupil with 7A’s, one with 6A’s, three with 5 A’s, and a host with 4 and 3 A’s. Every matriculant bar three, scored at least one A which is a wonderful achievement. The top achiever is Matthew Greenwood with an aggregate of 88.4%, followed by YounSuk Choi with 86%, Minjung Choung with 85.4%, Timon Prins with 85.1%, Tayla Johnson with 82.7% and Kelsey Guest with 81%. LEARNING TO ACCEPT THAT PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT AND HAVE DIFFERING NEEDS By Carol Booth Principal of Cannons Creek Independent School One of the most difficult things in life is to teach our children that each child receives different things in life for a reason.
WHAT IS FAIR?
There is a lovely story of three children wishing to see a sport match but were unable to see over the wall, because they were not tall enough.ww Each child at home, received from their mother a box. Each child received a box of a different size. The smallest child got the biggest box and the other two children were not happy about the situation. The tallest child received the smallest box and this was seen to be most unfair. The middle child, after listening to the arguments of the two other children just took the medium size box and in reality it was the only one left. It was only when they got to the sports ground that they realised why their mother had done what she had. Each child received the correct box to achieve the same goal – to ensure that each child was the same height to be able to peer over the wall. Each child got what was needed in order to achieve the same goal. Therefore, we need to treat each and every child according to their specific needs.
When a child attends school the same principle applies. Just because another child has an item which is different to what our child may have, and possibly more expensive; one has to ask if one really needs the branded and more expensive item? Most of the time, the answer is no. We need to teach our children that there is always a reason for children being different and sometimes having things that our children may not.
MEDICAL NEEDS
If one has a child who for medical reasons needs to have a snack in class to control the sugar levels, it does not mean that all children need to have a snack too. One has to explain this to children – that in order to receive the same result one has to do different things i.e. the aim is to get each child healthy and able to work in class.
CELEBRATE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES
Children who attend full time after-care would receive different things compared to children who are there for only an hour. The children who are there for a short period of time have the lovely experience of going home early with the parents. The child who has to wait the whole afternoon for their parents, will have more exciting activities done with them so that they also have the time where the teachers (in place of the parents) do activities with them. We need to teach them that this is what life is all about.

A hard lesson but a crucial one. All children are not the same and we need to empower our children to be able to cope with this. Just because a friend has a lovely toy does not mean that we need to rush out and purchase the same thing. I love expensive cars; some of my friends have very expensive cars but the reality is that I am unable to go out and purchase one. This is the real world and we need to make sure that our children are ready to deal with these matters. We learn through our experiences and we need to make sure that we do not protect our children too much so that they are unable to function independently when they go out into the world on their own.

HAROLD WINEARLS
LONG TIME PINELANDS RESIDENT
Harold, born in Pinelands in 1947, is one of three sons born to Jimmy and Sheila Winearls. Harold's father was on the board of Garden Cities and his mother was instrumental in the establishment of the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service, and was also a strong petitioner, going from door to door collecting signatures for what is now The Howard Centre. Harold was baptised at St Stephen's Church where his parents were members.
PINEWOOD VILLAGE IN THE BEGINNING
Harold remembers the early days of Pinewood Village well. They were not easy as the agreement between UCT and the ARP&P meant that the building of the units began in 1994 at a time when the country's political situation was changing and there was a great deal of uncertainty about the future. For the project to work, units had to be sold before they were built. The area which was previously a UCT sports field was ploughed up and just when building was progressing there was heavy flooding turning the area into an ugly quagmire. Early photographs show how the first residents knuckled down with their green fingers to turn the grounds into a place of beauty very quickly. Up until today the gardens are spectacular and a great area of pride for the residents. Long time staff member Yvonne Ellis works at reception,

and is a cheerful friendly welcoming face when the monthly Muse is delivered. Another long time staff member, Karen Reid, left two years ago.
RETIREMENT PLANS Harold is an extensive reader with a love for books on politics and autobiographies. On his trips to visit his brother Christopher who is a renal specialist at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, he has collected books to build up his home library, so yes, reading is on his retirement list, as are the UCT summer school lectures that he enjoys attending. Travel is part of Harold's list and he has the enviable opportunity to visit his brother Nicholas a financial consultant in Monaco – bringing with it a chance to see the Formula One Grand Prix as it whizzes through the streets in May this year. For local holidays Harold can take a break to his house in Pringle Bay – and one day he will sort out the Canadian stamp collection bequeathed to him by a second cousin.
PINEWOOD VILLAGE Harold describes Pinewood Village as a unique community where people can build up strong relationships to support one another; where there is assisted care for those that need it; and where there is local entertainment such as socials in the dining room, a snooker table and a horticultural society that helps residents to excel in the
creation of the most beautiful gardens. He chuckles that some of his school teachers live at the village! He is thinking of Betty Gable his sub A school teacher at the Red school in 1953.
ADVICE FOR RETIREMENT PLANNING.
Usually pensioners and retirees think of moving, simply to downsize when all the children have left home; and go to a place where there is good security and possibly assisted living and / or frail care facilities. Harold suggests that one does not leave it too late to think and look for a place to go to in your sunset years. Do some long term planning – start looking at about 67 years of age, be ready to move at 70, with 75 being a good age to move into a village. Look to stay in the area that you know and where you have friends. Beware of places with too many steps. Make sure there is a dentist and a medical facility nearby. Check the infrastructure for activities that appeal to you – walking groups, golf, bowling. Meals are also important. Something like a carvery once a month is a good meal to look forward to and one where you could invite guests to share a meal. Harold will be taking up residence in a house in Pinewood Village as he relinquishes the reigns of management to the new incumbent Karen Rae. We wish them both all the best in the new phases of their lives.

Long time member of the Pinelands community, Harold Winearls retired from his position as General Manager at Pinewood Village at the end of 2014. He recalls the very first phases of the building of the estate at which time he had an office in the first one-bedroom house built in 1994. The project was born from an agreement between UCT and the Retired Persons and Pensioners Association, at a time when the political climate made it difficult to convince prospective buyers to invest in property at Pinewood Village.

UNDERSTANDING RETIREMENT ANNUITIES By Sue Torr Director at Crue Consulting
The entrance of unit trust companies has breathed new life and variety into the sphere of retirement annuities. Over and above the refreshing flexibility afforded by these unit trust companies, their reporting is much more transparent and the costs have been substantially reduced so that you can now invest in a unit trust-based RA for a total cost of 1.75% per year, with no upfront commissions being paid to insurance brokers. Legislation governing retirement annuities has also been amended to allow investors to more easily move their RAs between product providers without having to pay massive costs.
WHAT IS A RETIREMENT ANNUITY?
Simply put, a retirement annuity is a tax-efficient investment vehicle for your retirement that allows you to build capital during your working years so that you have enough money to enjoy the same standard of living when you retire.
WHO SHOULD CONSIDER AN RA?
• People who are self-employed. • Employees who do not receive pension or provident fund benefits from their employer. • Employees who earn a significant amount of non-pensionable income and want to ramp up their retirement funding. • Anyone with a retirement funding shortfall wishing to take advantage of the RA tax-break offered by the government.
TAX AND ESTATE ADVANTAGES OF A RA
Legislation allows one to invest 15% of one’s taxable income – less any amount that is being contributed towards a pension or provident fund – tax–free into a retirement annuity. Also the investment returns earned on RAs do not attract income tax nor capital gains tax. Money invested in a retirement annuity is deemed to fall outside of your estate and can therefore not be touched by creditors. Although not necessarily a disadvantage, RA investors may not access the money in their RA until age 55.
THE FLEXIBILITY OF UNIT TRUST STYLE RAs
Unlike the old-style insurance-based RAs, the new unit trust-based RAs are incredibly flexible. One can change the level of your monthly contributions, or

Investors are also permitted to make lump sum contributions into their RA, offering the perfect opportunity to invest one’s bonuses or additional commissions. 28 February marks the end of the 2014/2015 tax year, and most investors use this opportunity to maximise their allowable tax-free retirement annuity investments. Long-term, consistent retirement annuity contributions will average off any market fluctuations over one’s investment period.
WHAT HAPPENS TO MY RA AT RETIREMENT?
When you retire, you are able to withdraw one third of your RA investment as a lump sum. Of this, the first R500 000 is tax-free (assuming no other lump sums are taken from other retirement fund investments), with the balance being taxed on a favourable sliding scale. The remaining two thirds of your investment must be used to purchase an annuity which will provide you with an income during your retirement.
START INVESTING FOR RETIREMENT ASAP
The best time to start funding for retirement is with your first pay cheque. If you haven’t already started, then the second best time is now.
JOHN'S EXAMPLE
To understand the cost of delaying your retirement funding, consider this example: John is 25 years old and earns an after-tax income of R14 000 per month. He currently contributes 15% of his pensionable income (R2 100) per month towards a retirement annuity, with the intention of retiring at age 65. If his investment premiums increased annually with inflation (assumed at 6%), he would have a capital amount of around R43 million (around R4 million present value) at retirement which would be sufficient to provide him with his desired post-retirement income. If John were to delay saving for retirement until he reached age 35, he would then need to invest 30% of his pensionable income to achieve the same result. If he were to delay saving for a further 10 years (i.e. he only starts investing at age 45), he would need to invest a whopping 66% of his pensionable income to achieve the same investment outcome. See illustrated graph above.

Our tour started at 3pm with enthusiastic and informative Talia - one of the staff at SANCCOB - The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds. We started at the ICU unit and visited the hatchery, the three rehab areas and ponds, the home pen, and were treated to a personal visit from "Skipper", a tame African penguin. Sanccob has cleaned and treated more than 90 000 birds since its inception in 1968. Well known for their rescue efforts after major oil spills, here at home and as far away as Tristan da Cunha, SANCCOB is constantly busy with sick or abandoned penguin chicks and numerous other seabirds. There were a large number of cormorants
the day we visited the centre, which is entirely covered with netting - not to keep the birds in, but to keep the mosquitoes out. These local pests carry a form of malaria that affects the penguins. The centre was a hive of activity with volunteers from all over the world. The strict cleanliness and daily medical routines being closely followed. Tours run at SANCCOB twice a day during the week and on some Saturdays. The price is R50 or R250 depending on the group size. Look for it at 22 Pentz Drive in Tableview. One can also have children's parties which can be fun and educational, teaching children about the hazards of dumping waste plastics and earbuds in the sea. SPICY BUTTER BEAN BITES 1 x 410 g tin butter beans, drained and rinsed 1 small onion, grated 10 ml (2 tsp) grated lemon rind 30 ml (2 tbsp) lemon juice 10 ml (2 tsp) ground cumin 10 ml (2 tsp) ground coriander 2,5-5 ml (½-1 tsp) mild curry powder 45 ml (3 tbsp) chopped fresh parsley or coriander 15 ml (1 tbsp) dried origanum 30 ml (2 tbsp) wholewheat flour 1 egg, beaten 1,2 ml (¼ tsp) salt pepper to taste 30 ml (2 tbsp) sunflower or olive oil 1. Place all the ingredients, except the oil, in a mixing bowl. Mash with a fork or a potato masher until smoother. Season with more pepper and lemon juice if preferred. 2. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Fry spoonfuls of the mixture until golden underneath and turn as it starts to set. Fry for a few more minutes. 3. Reduce heat and cover with a lid to allow to cook through for 1-2 minutes. Spoon out and repeat with remaining mixture and oil. 4. Serve for supper with a starch of your choice, lemon wedges and fresh fruit or veggies. They are delicious hot or cold, and great in a wholewheat pita or wrap, with low-fat yoghurt and a salsa made with cucumber, tomato and red or yellow peppers – perfect for supper or a lunch box. Tip 1. If the curry flavour is too strong for your kids, substitute the curry powder with dried mixed herbs.

Best of Beans Childhood memories of my school lunch boxes are varied. I recall soggy jam sandwiches, then the cheese– and–sandwich–spread phase and an on–off relationship with peanut butter. I remember enjoying large chunks of green sweet peppers (the colourful ones were not so popular then), cucumber and tomatoes as well as fruit. My best ever, was cold bobotie and chutney on a sandwich – a real treat. What’s yours? These days there are so many ready–to– buy options for lunch boxes – something we very seldom had, just because it wasn’t available. Ok, and because homemade was healthier. Yes, shop-bought options are convenient, no doubt, but we need to be conscious of the fact that these can be packed with salt, sugar or other preservatives which is not ideal. By planning the whole family’s lunch boxes one can have a good balance between
healthy options, treats and nibbles that don’t require lots of effort or cost. Try to pack something from each of the most important food groups. A protein keeps you full, so a meat ball, piece of cold chicken or fish cake is easy to eat. Biltong and droëwors are quick to pack, but can be very salty. Fruit and veggies are great for a lunch box. They add texture, colour, juiciness and lots of vitamins and minerals to keep you going. Unrefined, high-fibre carbohydrates are great to fill you up and it doesn’t have to be a sandwich. Add some variety by packing a piece of corn on the cob, small potato in the skin or mealie fritters. Make a double batch of these spicy bean bites for supper and pack the rest as a protein–carb bite for the next day. Beans are inexpensive, full of fibre and a good source of protein and if you have picky eaters, the bit of curry masks the fact that it’s beans. See the tip with the recipe.
