THE PARADOX OF CHOICE

BIRDS IN PINELANDS

In decades past, we had far fewer options in life and far less choices to make. In your career you studied a trade or profession, got a job and stayed in it with occasional promotions until your retirement date when you stopped working. When out shopping there was a limited choice of similar products. Socially, there were firm rules which governed our opinions and actions. With limited options and choices to make, life was relatively simple. We were relatively happy in our lives but wished for more options and choices so we could be even happier.

As you read this, South Africa's most widely 'twitched' bird might still be in the Black River on the edge of Pinelands. It's a Snowy Egret, a North American species blown off course, and it has ended up feeding along the Black River opposite the M5 Berkeley Road off-ramp. It can be distinguished from the similar Little Egret by the Snowy's bright yellow skin in front of the eye and the yellow up the back of the legs (Little Egret only has yellow feet). Over 1 000 birders from around the country have made the 'twitch' to see it for themselves already!

Well, be careful of what you wish for. Nowadays, social boundaries are crumbling, the world of work is a very uncertain place, requiring constant changes of direction and sometimes even profession. We are faced with an avalanche of products and services to buy, and face constant messages urging us to try and buy this, that and everything else. We have choice in spades in every facet of our lives and the products and devices we want are ever smarter and more sophisticated. I wonder if all this choice and sophistication has really made our lives better, easier or happier? I turn again to the lyrics of Jack Johnson to put our conundrum into words: We're clever but we're clueless. We're just human. Amusing but confusing. But the truth is - all we've got are questions. Today, there are many more roads that a person can take to make a living and a life, but they are not well signposted and very few of them will guarantee the final destination. I guess the trade-off for more choice and options in life is greater risk and uncertainty. I hope you enjoy this edition!

therapies which the school offers, we needed an alternative means of communication for Aadam. Lisa and Ed Ellis (with Pieter Cloete who assists us technically) from Inclusive Solutions in Knysna came to the rescue. They loaned Vista Nova eye tracking equipment that Aadam has been using this year. It has made such a difference to Aadam’s life. He uses the gaze of his eyes to connect with a vocabulary grid on the computer, which speaks what he wants to say. We are most thankful to Inclusive Solutions and are hoping that this form of technology will open doors for Aadam to follow a meaningful vocation. Aadam Tofie is a 17-year-old pupil at Vista Nova High School in Pinelands. He has cerebral palsy and is unable to physically do anything for himself. He also has limited communication and has a full time facilitator who supports his every need at school, including transporting him in his adapted wheelchair. He has shown huge tenacity and determination in the face of much adversity. The Vista Nova ‘family’ has fully embraced Aadam since he was a little tot of 3 when he joined the Vista Nova Nursery class. It hasn’t been an easy road for Aadam and the Tofie family. Apart from having cerebral palsy from birth, he was also diagnosed with Leukaemia when he was 11 years old. 9:29 AM The treatment was severe and Aadam missed quite a bit of school, but he was well supported by his family, friends, therapists and teachers at the Primary School in Rondebosch. Thankfully he has been in remission for 3 years now. Modern technology has made a huge difference to Aadam’s life this year. As communication has always been problematic, despite receiving all the

On Saturday 30 May 2015, the Metro Central District Spelling Bee took place at Rosebank Junior School in Rondebosch. 42 Learners from different schools within the district participated. Three learners represented The Pinelands Primary (Blue School) – Aidan Truter (Gr. 4), Aaliah Heilbron (Gr. 5) and Jesse Leonard (Gr. 6). “We were all nervous, but very excited. We had to learn more than 1000 words as they could ask you to spell any word from a given list” said Aaliah Heilbron. There were 3 elimination rounds. The 6:24 PM learners were asked one of the 1000 words per round. An incorrectly spelled word meant elimination. However, all 3 of the Blue School learners made it through the first 2 intense rounds with 22 learners from other schools being eliminated. Aidan was

eliminated in the 3rd round as he missed one letter in the word “archaeologist”. He was still in the top 20 in the district. From the fourth round, the learners came to the stage one by one to spell the same word. Once again, failure to spell the word correctly meant elimination. Both Jesse and Aaliah made it through a number of difficult words, until there were 4 learners out of 42 that started off the competition, 2 from The Blue School and 2 from Greenfields Primary School. They continued with sudden death rounds until Aaliah made a mistake and was eliminated. Jesse together with the two girls from Greenfields Primary School will go through to the next round and represent the district; while Aaliah is the reserve. We wish Jesse the best of luck. Read to Rise is a non profit NGO established by Thornton residents Taryn Lock and Athol Williams. The organisation promotes youth literacy in underprivileged areas. Volunteers can get involved in a number of ways, by donating books - specifically Oaky and the Sun written by Athol Williams and illustrated by Taryn Lock, mini libraries, covering books in plastic or by donating pencils. When books are donated, the Read to Rise team and volunteers go into Grade 2 classrooms in Mitchells Plain and read to the children and then distribute books to them. BEST YOUTH SERVICES AWARD FOR PINELANDS ROTARY CLUB The District Governor Elect of District 9350, Geraldine Nicol congratulated Pinelands Rotary Youth Director Brian Smart for his efforts at encouraging and supporting 18 Rotary EarlyAct club teachers in charge, and the building of a community service organisation in Khayelitsha including the running of the Nal’ibali Reading for Pleasure Clubs. At a Youth Evening Dinner held at the Hellen keller Society in May, guests were treated to presentations from various Youth projects in the community. Dr Patti Silbert opened the evening talking about the UCT Schools Initiative Project in Khayelitsha – a partnership that enables students from disadvantaged backgrounds in the area to gain access to study at UCT. The Youth Evening program continued with presentations from Intshayalelo Reading Group and the Soyisile Reading Group from Nal’ibali Khayelitsha. EarlyAct projects were presented by Pinelands North Primary School (PNPS), Cannons Creek Independent School, Kuyasa PS Projects (Khayelitsha) and Ntwashahlobo Projects (Khayelitsha). PNPS EarlyAct with teacher Bev Pereira, raised R40 000 for nine various charities. Pinelands High School Representatives 9:58 AM Jody Pothier and Kelsy Mohd, with teacher Cathy Smith, presented a cheque for R 10 000 towards a Rotary Shelterbox which will help those in need after the earth quake in Nepal. The Cannons Creek High School Interact Club with teacher Melanie Williams was welcomed with their charter certificate as a new Rotary community service club. On Thursday 28 May at about 9:45pm, Constables Zulu and Steenberg from Pinelands SAPS responded to a radio call from Pinelands Neighbourhood Watch members regarding suspicious persons seen jumping a wall on the Pine Edge side of Pinelands. The SAPS constables apprehended one of the suspects as they were attempting to flee the area via Jan Smuts Drive. The suspect was in the possession of a laptop and some smaller items, and could only be charged with possession of presumed stolen property, but was soon linked to a housebreaking case in Heron Way. Housebreakings have recently started picking up in the area so this was a welcome arrest, which would not have been possible had it not been for the great teamwork between SAPS and our Neighbourhood Watch members. All that glitters is not gold By Sue Torr Director at Crue Invest

In the immediate aftermath of the exposure of any Ponzi scheme, the overwhelming response from the world of investing is general disbelief that any rational being could fall for such obvious trickery. Named after the 1920s fraudster, Charles Ponzi - who promised investors in New England a 40% return on their investments in 90 days, compared with 5% interest earned in savings accounts – the Ponzi scheme is the oldest and most common type of investment fraud. In its simplest form, a Ponzi scheme is essentially a pyramid scheme that operates on the basis of ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’. Their survival is dependent on a constant flow of new investor money which, if not found, will result in the ultimate collapse of the entire swindle. Sadly, investors are often slow to admit that they’ve fallen victim to a Ponzi scheme, for fear of being perceived as foolish and greedy. When investing, our advice is to exercise great caution and to look out for the following warning signs:

• Abnormally high investment returns

The most obvious sign of any investment skulduggery is the promise of an abnormally high investment return. Remember the adage: if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

• Guaranteed returns

The words ‘guaranteed returns’ are designed to trigger both deep-seated investor greed and the willing belief that this is a ‘sure-fire thing’. However, when it comes to investing, no return is ever guaranteed and even the most modest investment carries some risk.

• Consistently high performance

By their very nature, the investment markets rise and fall over time, and your returns in any reputable investment will reflect these market fluctuations. Be sceptical of any investment that promises consistently positive returns regardless of overall market conditions.

• Vague business model

If you don’t understand the business model after a 5-minute explanation, stay away. The investment’s business model should

be easy to understand and, as an investor, one should be clear where and how returns are generated. As Warren Buffett is famous for saying: “Never invest in a business you can’t understand.”

• The need for more investors

The survival of any Ponzi scheme is dependent on its ability to continually attract new investors. Without an ongoing stream of new investors, the fraudster is unable to pay the previous investors, and the whole scheme will unravel. Alarm bells should ring if you are pressured into finding new investors.

• Pressure to reinvest

Ponzi schemes will collapse without regular income or if too many investors withdraw their funds. In order to remain afloat, the promoter will offer investors higher returns if they don’t cash out or if they reinvest their money. Most Ponzi schemes don’t make any investments on behalf of their investors at all, so if you’re pressurised or rewarded for reinvesting, be alarmed.

• Pressure to act now

Ponzi fraudsters are also notorious for creating a false sense of urgency by leading the investor to believe the deal is only valid for a limited period of time. The investment opportunity is often shrouded in secrecy, and the investor is pressurised to ‘act now’ while the ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ window of opportunity stands obscurely and suspiciously ajar. This is a red flag!

• Credibility through association

A Ponzi scheme promoter creates an air of exclusivity by luring investors into his inner circle of family and friends - a powerful psychological tactic used by fraudsters to build credibility through association with reputable people. Remember, Bernie Madoff managed to deceive those nearest and dearest to him, including his own sons. As enticing as the notion of making money can be, the most effective way of creating honest and abiding wealth is by investing for the long term through reputable and credible institutions who have proven their mettle. Ponzi schemes use fear and greed to assault their would-be investors. Let’s temper our approach to investing by pondering the words of Leo Tolstoy who quite correctly noted, “The two most powerful warriors are patience and time”. There really is no short cut to any place worth going. 

MATT PIKE Swimming Teacher Matt Pike's interest in swimming was cemented when he entered his inter-schools gala at Pinelands North Primary School. He won the freestyle, breaststroke and individual medley, and thought "I'm good at this!" He continued his swimming career at Pinelands High School and in Grade 9 he decided to swim for the Cape Dolphins Aquatics at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in Newlands under Brian Button. He gained his full colours in pool and open water in 2012. He did especially well in the open water challenges and came second in the country in the 3km Open Water at Durban Nationals. After school he enrolled with the Vega School of Brand Leadership to study a BA in Creative Brand Communications. He needed to fund his education and decided to put his swimming expertise to good use. He had noticed that many people had not been taught to swim correctly, and he felt this was an area he could work with. Matt's first teaching class was born, at Western Province Aquatics. His business Swimmattix was launched one year ago and now he has established five teaching schools and is loving it! He has also graduated from Vega! schools, but a place where children and adults can learn to swim properly. Matt uses his own techniques built on from Ray Bester and because many of the children, including babies, are learning to swim, the pools are kept at a comfortably warm temperature. Matt takes great pleasure in seeing children lose their fear of water and become water safe. He stresses that "water safe" does not mean "drown proof" and there should always be supervision by a competent person when children are in the pool, and a qualified life guard on the pool deck for pool parties. It was a completely natural step for Katelyn Coss to follow in her father's footsteps – she fell in love with flying at the age of eight and worked hard towards her first solo flight on her 16th birthday on 17 May 2015. Katelyn describes herself as a shy and quiet person, but her face lights up as we speak about the journey she has travelled to her first solo flight. We sit in the cockpit of the Vans RV7 that she learnt to fly in, discussing how a flight with her father ignited her passion for flying and as soon as she could, she registered with the Cape Town Flying Club and started doing some theory and practical lessons, hoping ultimately to get her private pilots licence (PPL). Katelyn demonstrates the digital instrument panel commenting that she has a "busy mind" - and when she is flying every part of her brain is alert and involved in the flying process, which she finds exhilarating. Is the sky the limit? "No" says Katelyn - "when you are in the sky – there is no limit."

SCHOOL COMES FIRST

Katelyn attends Cannons Creek High School and while the exams are in progress she concentrates on her school work. Being a hands–on person she enjoys her design classes, having just completed a Gothic bride fusion style evening dress; and is already finding that Geography and flying complement each other. Katelyn plays softball and hockey, but takes care not to injure herself so as not to jeopardise her fitness for flying.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST SOLO FLIGHT

It started off as a normal training day. The Vans RV7 that I train in belongs to the family business, Robin Coss Aviation – in fact it was built by my father. The factory is close to the Cape Town International airport, so my instructor David Wilson accompanied me onto the runway so that we could fly to Fisantekraal to do some revision there. My training includes speaking to the Cape Town International Airport control tower. We request permission to take off and take instruction on which runway to use; and wind direction. I have become quite used to watching large commercial planes taxi past as I wait my turn in the Vans RV7. Once at Fisantekraal I practiced taking off and landing and some circuits, and although I was legally allowed to do my solo flight – I was still surprised when David announced that he thought I was ready – and should try going solo on the day – which was my 16th birthday! I felt very emotional – excited and nervous! Once I was taxiing down the runway – all on my own – my instinct took over and I was in flying mode. It felt wonderful. It was a short flight, with an average landing – but at least I didn't break the plane, jokes Katelyn. I feel a huge sense of achievement.

FERRARI OF THE SKY My parents are very supportive, for which I am extremely grateful. The Vans RV7 is a fast, modern plane to fly – equivalent to learning to drive on a Ferrari. I couldn't feel any safer than in an aircraft built by my father. The first solo flight celebrations included the traditional bucket of water thrown over me by my instructor; and my sister Zoe baked me a beautiful cake.

PROUD FAMILY Katelyn's parents, Michele and Robin, are very proud of their daughter. She has shown a maturity beyond her years not only with the actual piloting of the aircraft, but the responsibilities that go with it such as booking the training flights and arranging for the plane to be fuelled – checking and signing all the paperwork requirements.

NEXT STEPS Now that Katelyn has completed her first solo flight she is preparing to study the advanced flying course, learning some more technical flying techniques such as steeper banking turns, cross country navigation and then solo cross country flying. We wish Katelyn well as she builds up her flying hours towards her PPL. 

JIMMY NEVIS South African Music Awards (SAMA) nominee Jimmy Nevis chats to the Muse about his rise to fame, and his early days at Pinelands High School, where he was so reserved that his friends didn't know he could sing. The roller coaster ride continues for Jimmy as he is nominated for an MTV Africa Music Award (MAMA).

A CALLING

After school, Jimmy applied to study a music degree but was not accepted so he studied Journalism and Sociology. In his second year, after a romantic breakup, he felt inspired to write his hit song Elephant Shoes. This was an important spiritual time when he was able to write the song, make the recordings and market to several radio stations – all in a matter of two weeks. The song was an instant success and led to his album Subliminal, released in 2012. His next album The Masses was released in 2014.

HOW DID YOU MANAGE STUDIES AND A BURGEONING MUSIC CAREER?

I have always set myself goals and deadlines. Each person must work out their own method of coping, but I do what

it takes to get something done - even if it means working through the night. My mother provides good support. She is a businesswoman and an academic, but she reminds me that she is my mother and not my agent. My father is a church pastor and always wanted me to go into music and encouraged me to do so. Listening to my sister's singing made me want to sing too.

INSPIRATION FOR SONGS.

Well, I think we are all limited by how we see the world. I feel we have to make it happen, be self igniting and make a move, find time. My first songs were about love and hate; now I have moved on to social and political themes. I am particularly pleased with my nominations for SAMA awards and am delighted to be in the running for a MAMA award. This is a prestigious competition covering music artists all through Africa.

TWO OCEANS HALF MARATHON

As a child I was overweight and not interested in sport. My Dad did competitive running and while watching one of the races I was motivated to see if I could accomplish this feat. I have always loved the pressure of finishing something that I have started, so a friend and myself began training earlier this year – with short 2km runs and building up for the race, losing 17kg in the process. We both finished. What a great achievement! I cried when we were done – from the agonising physical pain!

GIVING BACK

Being in the public eye gives one the opportunity to influence many lives. We have started the Blue Collar Foundation which aims to assist learners with bursaries for study in education and humanities. We hope to create positive change in the country and will also offer music lessons. I believe that a tertiary education is important. It broadens one's mind and outlook on life in general. Be sure though to study the right thing.

JIMMY NEVIS - A POPULAR FASHION ICON

I once performed in my pyjamas because I thought it was "cool" – nowadays I work with stylists and get to wear designer and branded clothes. Through this I have seen that we have amazing talent in South Africa. We need to support and protect our economy. For me Local is lekker and I will make every effort to buy SA goods. My dream is that, if I should make it big on the international scene, I would like take my SA band with me on tour. I am grateful to them for remaining loyal and supportive when I couldn't afford to pay them.

Jimmy's early days at Pinelands High school were difficult for him. He came from Athlone and struggled to fit in. He was shy and didn't join in any of the theatre productions until he found the courage to audition for the school Cabaret Group – singing Stevie Wonder's Isn’t She Lovely. His first taste of fame followed, with fellow students stopping him in the corridor to congratulate him. His life changed, and from Grade 10 until matric he blossomed under the guidance of Garth Kayster who believed in Jimmy's talents, and Jeanine van der Rheede, the dance teacher who made sure he could perform on stage.

THE SPRINGBOK EXPERIENCE The V&A Waterfront is always a great place to visit - but here's another "must do" especially if you find you are experiencing cabin fever during the wet winter months. The Springbok Experience is entertainment for all ages. Get into the spirit of the game the Rugby World Cup is around the corner. Don't let the word museum put you off yes, the place is jam packed with history, but it satisfies all the senses with touch screens, surround sound, quizzes, and best of all, the Springbok Trials. The entrance to the museum is fashioned as a stadium tunnel - just imagine you are one of the country's elite and feel the tension as you go down the tunnel! Our first stop was at the photo booth – Max used the interactive photo booth to appear amongst the Springbok team – displayed on a huge screen at the entrance. A popular task at the trials area is the "Hand-off challenge". You race the timer switching off as many lights as possible as they illuminate at random. The top score to beat for men is 75 and for women 63 - a staggering 2 per second. Other challenges at the trials area are kicking for posts, tackles, and body building exercises, all to assess your Springbok worthiness. Upstairs the origins of Rugby are lavishly illustrated. Audio visual interactive screens and displays abound, choose your game on a touch screen, read digital newspaper articles, and test yourself on the various Rugby general knowledge quizzes. Do you know why a "try is called a try?" At the Spin Pass Challenge you have to match up the info on 4 Rugby balls - when you get it right you are congratulated by cheering crowds and flashing lights. The days of segregation in South

Africa, apartheid, and being shunned by the international community are comprehensively covered. Records of petitions signed in New Zealand in an effort to end apartheid are on display. Of course the World Cup win in 1999 when Nelson Mandela presented the Webb Ellis Cup to Francois Pienaar is a favourite exhibit – complete with the brassed boots worn by Joel Stransky as he kicked the winning points. A wonderful memory for Rugby and for the country as a whole. ...and when will you have the opportunity to have your photo taken next to the Currie Cup? The Springbok Experience concludes with a short video of Rugby in South Africa. Visit the Springbok shop on the way out for memorabilia, and clothing. Pricey official replicas are available, as are reasonable fun T-shirts, scarves and caps. The Springbok Experience is open every day of the week from 10am to 6pm with last entry to the Museum gallery at 5:30pm. It is closed on Christmas day. Tickets are R65 per adult (including a voucher for a free Castle draught) and R40 per child. A family of four is R180 plus R30 for every extra child. Team building and corporate functions can be arranged. The Springbok Experience can be found in Portswood House. It is off the beaten track and not obviously visible. From Ferrymans - look over the Road and skywards. You will see a set of Rugby posts. You need to find your way up the stairs where you will see a large croquet lawn and the Portswood House. Nearby parking garages are the Ulundi Parking Garage or the Portswood Square Parking Garage. If you know where the Time Ball Tower is - the Springbok Experience is close by. Call 021 418 4741. 

TRAVELLERS

ver since my first flight in 1999, I wanted to be a pilot. I was fascinated by the movement of the wing: the flaps, spoilers and ailerons. This sparked within me an interest for flying; and then came the engineering bug. A hot-air balloon ride in 2008, and an introductory flight in 2011 from Fisantekraal to Melkbos and back fuelled my desire to fly, while family holidays nurtured my travel bug. After graduating with a BSc in Engineering from the University of Cape Town I obtained a cabin crew position with Emirates Airline. I believe this will open the door to pursuing a career as a pilot or as an engineer within the company and, for the moment, it satisfies my desire to travel. I love my job - going places and meeting people from different cultures. I have snorkelled in the Seychelles, walked on the Great Wall of China and experienced Red Square in Moscow. My favourite destination thus far is Singapore. I made the most of this multi sector trip from Dubai to Singapore via Colombo, and here are a couple of my favourite spots. The Merlion is half fish which represents the culture of fishing upon which Singapore was established; and half lion from the city’s original name ‘Singapura’ which means ‘lion city’. The Merlion is a symbol of Singaporean tourism and can be found on many souvenir items. Marina Bay Sands is located directly opposite the Merlion, across the Marina Bay. This 55 storey, three towered, integrated resort has more than 2 500 rooms, a casino, theatre, museum, restaurants, shopping centre and a skypark. The impressive design dominates the Marina Bay skyline. The infinity pool in the skypark offers bathers a 270 degree view out over Singapore as the pool overhangs the tower by some 60m. This is certainly not for the faint hearted! Gardens by the Bay welcomes boats into Marina Bay. This park, largely open, free of charge to the public, consists of several enclaves of themed gardens; including a Chinese Garden, a Colonial Garden and two conservatory attractions. One of these conservatories, the Flower Dome, replicates a Mediterranean climate where I stumbled across some Fynbos, Aloes and Strelitzias; indigenous to South Africa. The structural design of these conservatories is striking as the glass roof has no internal supports such as pillars, offering vast unhindered growth within the greenhouse.

Singapore The Helix Bridge, so named for its

design, is a pedestrian bridge taking one across the Marina Bay to the foot of the The Singapore Flyer – this observation wheel, dominates the skyline of the Marina Bay along with The Marina Bay Sands. Each of the 28 capsules has a capacity of 28 people and all are air-conditioned. A complete trip round the wheel lasts half an hour and offers a view of the Singaporean Port, Central Business District, the Marina Bay, the Formula One Street Circuit of Singapore and The Marina Barrage – a hotspot for watersport enthusiasts. Formula One Race Track At the foot of the Singapore Flyer stands the Formula One Pits and Start/Finish Complex. Here, I accomplished a personal dream. It was a moment where the travel bug brought me face to face with the engineering bug. As I walked along the pit-lane entrance, the start/finish straight and down to turn one of the circuit, a tear welled up in my eye – my first Formula One circuit walk. For the average tourist, there’s nothing special about it; a road and some garages, but to the enthusiast it's a must-see in Singapore. Just a short mention of some other places I visited - the Suntec Mall with the huge silicone and brass Fountain of Wealth

symbolising the way to success. The War Memorial Park with the "chopsticks towers" representing unity and the four dominant languages of the region: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil; and Theatre on the Bay showcasing Singapore’s multi-cultural heritage, with a complex architectural design resembling an indigenous tropical fruit called Durian. The weather in Singapore was different from what I have become accustomed to in Dubai. The day started hot, turned humid and in the afternoon a tropical downpour passed through. I continued walking as many of the walkways are covered, and my route took me to the efficient metro system known as the SMRT, an integrated system of trains, buses and taxis. The spirit of the people of Singapore is amazing. They are hard-working, friendly, helpful and comfortable speaking English. Life is full of surprises and opportunities, remaining open minded has freed me to experience and enjoy so much more and left so much more yet to be explored. 

COMMENT ON EDUCATION

TOURISM STUDENTS VISIT PARLIAMENT The Cannons Creek Tourism students (Gr 10, 11 and 12) attended Parliament for the annual budget vote speech for Tourism on Thursday 14 May. They witnessed a very lively debating session along with the Tourism teachers Mr and Mrs Joubert. During his speech, the Minister acknowledged the students who were welcomed by the members of Parliament. Thanks go to parent Mrs Moolla, for arranging this exciting outing.

IMPRESSIONS OF PARLIAMENT

There they were: heckling, interrupting, teasing each other and refusing to listen. They cheered for their friends and sang mocking songs at others. Some played on their phones and one even ignored those around her and read a magazine. The cherry on top was when one stuck her tongue out at the people opposite her! I never dreamed I would see this sort of behaviour… from adults… in Parliament!

THE STUDENTS POINT OF VIEW

As I sat in the debate I noticed how many really good observations and suggestions were jeered and discounted merely because they came from the ‘wrong’ party. It left me saddened and wondering why my elected public servants didn’t realise that listening to one another and collaborating is the best way to serve us. Our Tourism students had been afforded the opportunity to attend the Tourism budget debate at Parliament. As we walked back to the school bus, up Hatfield Street and past the Cape Town Holocaust Centre, one of my matric students commented on the lack of respect shown in parliament (there’s a certain irony there). matric said “You could fill the Assembly Chamber with students who would do a better job!”

HOW CAN TEENS POSITIVELY INFLUENCE THE FUTURE OF SOUTH AFRICA? A very pertinent question, as Youth Day approached. Previous generations enlisted to fight Nazis, protested against unjust apartheid laws and endured prison as conscientious objectors. But what can we do today? Obviously teens and students can fling faeces and get statues removed… a dramatic form of protest, but to truly listen is possibly of greater transformative value. I don’t mean it in the “listen to me when I’m talking to you!” kind of way, but to truly understand and consider what is being said.

TO TRULY LISTEN REQUIRES THAT WE “SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND AND THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD.” In my home we speak both English and Afrikaans. When my son was two he began an obsession with motorised transport. One morning we sat at the table and had scones as a family. In my state of frustration at Hot Wheels invading my every waking minute, I heard him ask, “Cars please, Papa?” I calmly told him that we didn’t put toys on the table. He asked again, and I made my point through gritted teeth. He tried a third time, and only then did I realise he was saying, “Kaas (cheese) please Papa?” To truly listen we need to identify and put aside our preconceived ideas.

PUT YOURSELF IN SOME ELSE'S SHOES

Growing up in Pinelands during the apartheid years I believed that dogs only barked at non-white people. Imagine my surprise, when I started playing for Langa Hockey Club in 1999. On fitness runs down Bhunga Avenue the dogs would chase the “Abalungu” (white guys)! Many of my preconceived ideas are challenged in Langa! Driving down Forest Drive one particularly pleasant Sunday afternoon, there were no other cars on the road. Instead of experiencing the same sense of peace as my wife, my friend from Langa said it reminded him of a horror movie… an abandoned town where something silent and evil lurked in the shadows, waiting to jump out and earn an age restriction for violence!

LISTENING AS A TRANSFORMING POWER

In April I helped on a Scripture Union camp for high school boys. The biggest, toughest kid on camp had run away from home and was now in the state’s care. Following five days camping with men who were willing to listen, he decided to reconcile with his family and work at rebuilding their trust.

RECOGNISING EACH SIDE OF THE DEBATE

Lest we think that respect and listening are completely absent from Parliament, I acknowledge Minister Derek Hanekom. At the end of the debate, he took the time to acknowledge the concerns and suggestions of the opposition parties… a simple, but powerful and transforming act. This month, let’s truly listen to one another, to others in our community and also to those outside of Pinelands… in so doing we’ll be INSPIRING NEW WAYS.  Hein also writes weekly posts of 100 words or less for The Word Space.
