WELCOME About the cover: Dwindling cheetah habitat and the killing of cheetah by humans has driven this magnificent cat to the brink of extinction. See the article on Cheetah Outreach on page 9. The cheetah is the fastest land animal and can run as fast as 120km per hour. They have a slender body with a tan coat covered with approximately 2 000 small round black spots. The head is small with the distinctive black "tear marks" running from the corner of the eyes down the sides of the nose to the mouth – these are thought to protect the eyes from bright sunlight and thus aid in the hunting process.

WINTER PURSUITS
PELAGIC BIRDS
With Winter well and truly set in, we are at last getting some rain to fill the depleted dams for the long summer season ahead. Hopefully, we will not face water rationing on top of electricity outages in the dry months ahead. So, while we endure our water from the skies, the deluge of leaves shed from our trees and plummeting temperatures, take heart from the fact the daylight hours are now starting to become a little longer each day.
Winter is the best time to see albatrosses. They move northwards from the even colder conditions of the subantarctic regions, and often travel half-way around the entire globe to reach the seas off Cape Town. They never come to land, but albatrosses can be seen during winter storms by scanning offshore from places such as Kommetjie with strong binoculars. The most rewarding way to see them is to join a "pelagic" trip, a day trip in a boat in search of offshore trawlers where thousands of seabirds congregate and can be seen from just a few metres away. See www.capetownpelagics.com
The winter coughs, colds and flu seem to have been particularly widespread and nasty this season with many people remarking how long it took to get over them. With this in mind, read some sound advice from our local doctors and therapists about how to avoid and deal with these unwelcome invaders in our Winter Health and Beauty feature inside. As you will read in our Out and About on page 9, we recently spent a day at the Cheetah Outreach in Somerset West. This facility was previously located at Spier Wine Estate before it moved to larger surroundings at Paardevlei, which was the AECI / Somchem explosives factory – that large fenced-off area with the ominous guard towers beside the N2 just before Somerset West. Since the complex closed down the whole area has opened up again and we were surprised by the many positive developments to rehabilitate and develop the land and put it to good public use. Within a couple of years I think it could be an attractive and welcome addition to Cape Town's recreational options. A good model perhaps, for what could be done with the Oude Molen site with some official backing and recognition and the resultant private investment and enterprise which follows? Here's wishing you a warm and healthy winter season. I hope you enjoy this edition!

This made me think about Real Estate in general and the offerings by various Estate Agencies. How does a seller or buyer actually choose who to use when dealing with probably the greatest single investment that they are about to make or part with. It is probably easier for buyers as they will go with the agency that has the property that they are looking for – not so easy for sellers though.

On a recent trip to Durban I was reading the inflight magazine and came across an article entitled, A 55 item menu makes my head spin! It referred to restaurants with menus so long that it was difficult to choose. FOR SALE Kailen Naidoo recently competed in the 2015 US OPEN ISKA World Mixed Martial Arts Championships in Orlando, Florida, USA. He returned home with three second place trophies, from three different categories! Overall, the South African team of 120, including supporters, did very well; securing many first, second and third positions. The trip to the USA gave Kailen great exposure to first world countries and left a major impression on Kailen who would like to broaden his horizons in terms of his personal development. He enjoyed engaging and forging new friendships with competitors from all over the world. The experience has also been a platform to learn about different cultures and serve as an ambassador for South Africans. He is now determined to excel in the next championship. The message to Kailen's peers is to pursue their dreams and believe in themselves. He would like to thank The Muse (see article Muse May 2015); and all his sponsors for making this experience a success.

PROPERTY VALUES: Suburbs with the best property values are generally well nurtured. A residential property is an entire package. Its external appearance, state of repair and the way it looks in context with its neighbours is the first impression buyers get. In order to enhance values and protect one’s investment it is imperative to offer the total package. Homeowners spend a great deal on the interiors of their homes, and, when the time comes to sell, they are surprised that they can’t reach their market price. A look at the surroundings of the house, even in high-value areas, can often point to the reason why a property is unattractive to buyers.

Article by Dave Campbell, Principal, Pinelands High School. Potrait: Barbara Figaji, Marketing, PHS Some years ago I attended a conference entitled ‘Principals for Principles’. It could as easily have been called ‘Principles for Principals’. The theme which ran through the conference was encapsulated in a quotation by the German thinker and poet Goethe:
people’s characters and therefore have a tremendous responsibility to act as moral beacons in society, always working towards the ‘public good’ and guiding young people to make the right decisions.
"Make good thy standing place, and move the world."
The idea of ‘moving the world’ from a strong moral standpoint is a powerful one and suggests that those who have a firm moral anchor can influence society. As educators we believe implicitly in this. As Nelson Mandela said "Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world". No doubt he was meaning that education can banish ignorance and promote progress, but surely he was referring to a moral imperative as well? Knowing what we do about the great man, I believe that we can safely assume this.
It was a powerful reminder to us all in school leadership of the importance of making a strong stand for the principles 2:56which PM we consider to be important, and from there, to seek to change that which is beyond us. The conference challenged us to reaffirm the values which are sacrosanct to education, and without which we cannot help to shape society in a wholesome, positive way. By the end of the conference, the delegates had committed themselves to these points: • respect and trust and relationships are central to meaningful education; • the soul of education lies in the tradition that teaching is a noble profession; • morality and integrity are essential to sound education; • all education should be directed towards the public good. These are powerful points and can comfortably form the basis of a good educational institution.

We live in a society in South Africa where it is acceptable to lie in public, to sidestep the blame, and to take what belongs to others without fear of retribution. Schools play a major part in shaping young
THE POWER OF EDUCATION
TEACHING IS A NOBLE PROFESSION So the role of the teacher is a potent one, and can never be undervalued despite what society might imply about the profession. Teaching is a noble profession, and whilst our society may not always recognise this, the nobility lies in the fact that teachers are working with young, impressionable minds, and therefore have a responsibility perhaps greater than any other. It is a profession which calls for selfsacrifice, and one which has rewards which are often intangible.
SCHOOLS SHOULD BE BEACONS OF MORALITY AND HOPE Goethe’s image is a powerful one, and one which gives those of us working in schools a vivid picture of the necessity of standing for what is just. Schools should be beacons of morality and of hope, and should be leaders in their communities. Teachers too should be leaders in their schools and communities.

COACHING A SOCIAL Social tennis and leagues SPORT Midweek and weekends
On 10 June 2015 the Pinelands Tennis Club elected their first chairlady since 1985 - Ilse McCarthy. The last Lady chair at Pinelands Tennis Club was Rosemary Brinkworth who held office in 1985. Pinelands is one of the largest clubs in the Western Province (it has the biggest league entry) and has teams from top premier league down to basic bottom, catering for the full range of abilities. The new chairlady, Ilse is also a very good tennis player – she plays 1st league ladies doubles and has been ladies captain for the last few years. "I joined PTC about 16 years ago, after meeting the PTC tennis coach, Norman McCarthy – now my husband. Yes, we met through tennis. At that stage I played for Goodwood Tennis Club and we played a match against the Pinelands 1st team. He had no mercy, served aces, smashed, hit winners left right and centre. He convinced a few of us to come for coaching, which I loved and soon I loved the coach with the American accent. Norman and I married in Dec 2001 – the very English guy and the very Afrikaans girl. At first we stayed in the cottage at the PTC to save some money for our Pinelands house which we bought in 2003. Our boy, Cooper was born in September 2009. The best thing ever. He also loves tennis. We often go and play as a family and he never wants to go home. I have always felt at home at PTC. There is a place for everyone; the best players, the competitive players, the social players, kids, parents, grandparents, morning ladies, vets, and families. It is a safe environment

MONEY MATTERS
The unseen enemies
At Crue Invest we are passionate about planning financial futures: not because we love money, but because we love people. We treasure the personal trust relationships that we have with all our clients. We believe in a people-centred approach to financial planning, placing the client at the centre of engagement and ensuring that each and every financial plan is delivered at a completely human and understandable level.
Through experience, we know that financial planning is less about numbers, and more about understanding people and their relationship with money.
Our areas of speciality include: FINANCIAL PLANNING FOR COUPLES We believe whole-heartedly that joint financial planning for couples is the foundation of a successful relationship and a more secure financial future together. Nothing works against a family’s financial soundness as effectively as keeping money matters separate from each other. We know that when couples share their finances and commit to the financial planning process together, firmer futures are built and financial magic happens.
MULTI-GENERATION FINANCIAL PLANNING Even the best laid financial plans can be blindsided by the unexpected realisation that one’s aged parents have run out of retirement funding. Funding your children’s education whilst supporting your parents financially can disastrously affect your own retirement funding. We encourage engagement across the generations to ensure that your financial plan recognises your financial responsibilities to all generations in your family.
PRE-RETIREMENT PLANNING Knowing when to retire and whether you have enough invested is a source of anxiety for many people approaching retirement. Also, navigating the legislative and tax implications is confusing. We offer pre-retirement counselling to calculate exactly how much you have invested, when you can retire and how long your capital will last.
Financial planning begins with an open and honest discussion about you, your loved ones and your money. Let’s chat.
“The best time to plant a
tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” CHINESE PROVERB
Crue Invest (Pty) Ltd is a licensed Financial Service Provider No. 19025
By Sue Torr Director at Crue Invest
Whilst most investors consider the most ominous threats to their retirement savings to be unpredictable market forces and failing economies, the truth is that some of the greatest threats to one’s retirement can be latent and unassuming. Even the most bullet-proof retirement plan can be disrupted for seemingly innocuous reasons, and it’s worth exploring some softer, more personal choices that can blind-side one’s retirement dreams.
Divorce
Although most couples in their 40s and 50s probably don’t anticipate divorce, the numbers are somewhat unnerving. Regardless of the scale of a couple’s wealth or the amiability of the separation, a divorce can have catastrophic effects on one’s retirement planning; and any couple would be naive to believe they can unravel their marriage without severely compromising their retirement plans in the process. A divorce later on in life is bound to not only disrupt one’s financial independence, but also force a number of lifestyle changes to be made by both parties. What was once a jointly conceived retirement plan comprising of a single retirement home, joint overseas travel, appropriately timed vehicle upgrades and a retirement income sufficient to support a combined lifestyle would need to be cast aside and recalculated for each individual.
Second homes
Buying a second home while both spouses are still working may often seem both affordable and practical, especially if the bond on the primary residence has been settled. While one’s children are at school, a second home is often the family’s holiday hub and a vacation bastion for friends and extended family. The thrill of owning a second home is, however, often replaced by anxiety once the reality of funding a second home from a reduced retirement income sets in. The upkeep of the second property often becomes an arduous duty rather than one of retirement’s anticipated pleasures. In addition, if the equity in the second home is needed to supplement other retirement investments, the timing of the sale of a second home can be
instrumental to secure one’s retirement cash-flow. Being forced to sell a second property at an inopportune time can result in your nest egg being compromised.
Adult children
One of the single biggest threats to a couple’s retirement funding is adult children who continually ask to borrow money from their parent’s nest egg. Helping one’s adult children with the purchase of their first property or assisting them financially when embarking on a new business venture are both notable and natural acts of any parent anxious to give their child a stronger financial footing. The problem, however, arises when financial assistance happens so often that it becomes a form of annuity income for the adult child who, in most instances, is completely oblivious to his parent’s dwindling resources. Financially dependent adult children present two major complexities: the parents are often too racked with guilt to withdraw the funding from their child, who will naturally suffer the consequences of the taps being turned off; and the adult child, being both emotionally and financially dependent on this parents, makes the dangerous assumption that his parents have a surplus of funds.
Starting a business
Retired executives with an entrepreneurial itch often find the temptation to start a business irresistible, but doing so can dig dangerously into much-needed retirement capital. As enticing as it may be to dabble in an exciting new business venture or try one’s hand at innovation, the truth is that very few earn what they would have earned if they’d simply kept their funds invested. As investors, we are often so focused on the obvious threats to our investments that we neglect to take cognisance of the not-so-obvious dangers that we may encounter on the path to building wealth. Even the best-laid retirement plans are capable of being derailed by seemingly innocuous decisions, giving truth to the words of George R.R. Martin in A Clash of Kings, “the unseen enemy is always the most fearsome.”

OUT AND ABOUT
CHEETAH OUTREACH
Housed on land adjoining Paardevlei in Somerset West, Cheetah Outreach is primarily an educational program designed to educate - highlighting the plight of the endangered cheetah, of which there are only 10 000 worldwide and only 1 500 left in South Africa. Besides caring for injured cheetah, the facility breeds Turkish Anatolian Shepherd dogs and places them on farms to guard livestock in an effort to reduce conflict between farmers and predators. The dogs will chase the cheetahs away from the livestock but will not kill them. Farmers are given Anatolian Shepherd puppies with the agreement that they will not shoot any wildlife predators on their farms - but will allow the dogs to grow up with, and protect their livestock. On our tour of the facility we saw caracal, servals, meerkats, bat-eared foxes, black-backed foxes and tortoises. One can pay for a personal encounter with the small wildlife and with the cheetah. The raised observation deck - jokingly called The Cat Scan allows a view of all the Serval cats can sometimes enclosures and of Paardevlei be mistaken for small cheetah which is being developed as a bird sanctuary and will eventually have a board walk around the perimeter. On our visit we were rewarded with a few flamingoes feeding at the waters edge. How to get there? Take the N2 towards Somerset West and take exit 43. Turn right onto the R44 and head towards Strand. At the second traffic light turn right into De Beers Avenue. Cheetah Outreach is on your right. Entrance is R10 including the tour. Open The caracal are taken seven days a week from out daily for long walks 9:30am to 5pm. NOTE - no credit cards - cash only. We enjoyed lunch at the Lorenzo Marx Coffee Bar afterwards and then explored the estate discovering the Triggerfish brewery, the Flagstone Wine Estate and the Paardevlei development. AVOID DEHYDRATION
Your extremities are more likely to get very cold if you don't wear gloves and socks as well as a beanie in cold weather. One's hands and feet get cold first as the peripheral circulation shuts down. This may lead to painful chilblains. Smokers who get chilblains should try to stop smoking in order to help the circulation.
Even though it's winter we still need to drink at least 2 litres of fluid a day. This can be taken in as hot beverages to keep your core temperature up. Choose herbal teas, as too much caffeine is not healthy.

In South Africa, it's part of our lifestyle to be regularly exposed to recreational activities which involve water, and from a safety point, learning to swim should be as important as learning to walk. If parents have the opportunity and means I would recommend that a child begins swimming lessons at an early age, either at baby or toddler stage and by the time they start school to have a basic knowledge of stroke technique. The longer it is left before learning to swim, the more fear can become embedded. One of the first tasks in teaching adults to swim is to undo all those years of fear. My husband Peter and I moved to Pinelands in 1980. We enjoyed the close community feeling and felt it was a wonderful place to bring up children. We may have had the first indoor swimming school in Pinelands. Developing and nurturing many young swimmers has been a wonderful pleasure and a rewarding experience. I’ve witnessed quite a number of my swimmers grow from toddlers to being selected to competitively represent Western Province, as well as at national and international levels.

Slapping on extra moisturizer in winter is not enough to protect your skin from the cold weather. You may not realize that you have developed some bad habits that will prevent you from keeping your skin healthy. Here’s how to break them.
USE SUNSCREEN IN SUMMER & WINTER
UV rays affect your skin all year long, even on cloudy days. Sunscreen not only protects you from harmful rays, it provides a protective barrier from wind, cold, pollution and air conditioning. Choose one with antioxidants to neutralise free radicals.
DON'T IGNORE YOUR LIPS
There are no oil glands in your lips, that’s why they are the first to warn you that the air is getting drier. Cold wind and dry indoor heat strip them of their natural protection. Avoid licking your lips, stay away from high levels of petrolatum and find one with a sun protection factor (SPF).
AVOID ALCOHOL BASED PRODUCTS
Some toners, acne face washes and hand sanitizers contain alcohol, which should be avoided at all times, especially in winter. Alcohol strips your natural oils, leaving your skin super dry. Rather opt for gentler ingredients or natural acids, like alpha hydroxys or lactic acid (derived from milk) in toners and cleansers.
BEWARE OF OVER EXFOLIATING
Cherry Blossom
054.indd 1
22/07/2015
Too much scrubbing or using harsh exfoliants will cause your skin to dry out and 9:19 AM struggle to replenish its natural oils. Winter is when you use a gentler cleanser and ask your therapist to rather treat you with cool peels to encourage skin sloughing and treat conditions like pigmentation.

Slathering yourself with rich body butters isn’t always the right way to go. Check out the ingredients first. Quality moisturizers contain humectants and ingredients that attract moisture, like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Ensure that they contain occlusive ingredients to seal in the moisture. Stay away from mineral oils; rather use natural ones like avocado, hazelnut and rosehip.
PREVENT MOISTURE LOSS FROM HEATERS
Electric blankets, air conditioning and heaters all dry out the air as well as your skin, eyes, mucous membranes and hair. If possible use a humidifier or keep a large bowl of water near the heater in order to prevent loss of moisture. Sleeping with a hot water bottle or turning off the electric blanket when you hop in, will help.
SPEND LESS TIME IN HOT WATER
There’s nothing like a hot bath or steamy shower to warm you up, but spending too much time soaking in it, will leave your skin dehydrated. Limit yourself to 5-10 minutes, pat yourself dry and apply a moisturizing body oil with Vitamins A, C and E.
LOOK AFTER ITCHY SKIN
Itchy areas should be kept well lubricated to prevent eczema and other skin rashes from developing. Increase your fatty acid levels with 2 portions of fatty fish every week. Supplement with Omegas 3 and GLA.
DRINK ENOUGH WATER
Rather increase your water intake, even if it means learning to sip warm, lemony water. The old rule of 6-8 glasses a day still applies. By Cheryl Smulders of Sublime Skin & Body.

Winter can be draining. Sick people all around you, overcast weather, too little sun... CONSIDER SUPPLEMENTS CAREFULLY
There is no sure fire way to stay illnessfree in the winter. Don’t be fooled by the marketing hype around certain products containing vitamins. No amount of supplement will guarantee that you don’t become ill. Supplements that claim to boost your immune system are not subject to scrutiny by the Medicine control council of South Africa and can therefore make any claim they like. There was a small study looking at 1 000 mg of vitamin C per day that showed increased immunity. This was subsequently refuted. The same can be said about echinacea.
SLEEP BOOSTS THE IMMUNE SUSTEM
The only true fire way to boost one’s immunity is to get enough sleep, eat right, stress less and get enough exercise. There was a study done on new doctors at Baragwanath Hospital that showed that after a night of no sleep the young doctors had a similar immunity as those with AIDS.
AVOID TRANSMISSION OF GERMS
Another important way to avoid illness is to prevent transmission of germs via fomites. Fomites are objects on which germs are collected (e.g. telephone / escalator rail
IT’S GLOW TIME
PARTICIPATION IN FORMAL / keyboard) and then transmitted toDrStodel-S6-054.indd an 1 21/07/201 SWIMMING LESSONS CAN uninfected person. In other words – wash your hands often (or use hand sanitisers) and be wary of items used by multiple persons. WHY DO WE GET SICK WHEN IT IS COLD?
Another myth that one should ignore is that cold weather / rain/ wet hair / getting wet makes you ill. This old wives' tale was propagated by people who noticed that people became sick when the weather became cold. While people do tend to become ill when it is cold, it has less to do with the temperature than with the fact that people move indoors and close all the windows, thereby spreading the germs they have incubated within themselves. If you wish to stay healthy – avoid crowded areas, and open the windows.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COLD AND THE FLU
I have to stress again the difference between a cold and the flu. There are 180 viruses that cause a cold. Only one virus causes the flu. A cold makes you feel unwell. The flu can kill. People must be vaccinated against the flu especially if they are under five and over 65, or have a lung or heart illness, or diabetes. A cold might make you miss a day of two of work, flu makes you miss up to a week of work.
Get vaccinated!

Promoting Youth Literacy Co-founders of the NGO "READ to RISE", Taryn Lock and Athol Williams tell us about the importance of their work in helping children to read. This bubbly husband and wife team come from a background of struggle. They are expert problem solvers. Working hard and valuing good education they have used their experiences in the corporate world, winning many international and national awards, to start their organisation that gives the gift of literacy a head start in life, and a brighter future.

Born, raised and educated in Johannesburg, Taryn is a third generation South African Chinese. She feels wholly South African and says that people are surprised to know that she cannot speak Chinese, but she is fluent in Afrikaans. Problem solving is her forte and she completed her BSc degree in Mathematics and Computer Science and her BSc Hons degree In Mathematics. Taryn grew up in a home full of books and believes this helped her to complete two university degrees. In 2004 Taryn joined Taurus Associates as a business strategy analyst. The company was owned by Athol Williams and this is how they met,
Athol grew up in Mitchells Plain, and is quite familiar with the hardships posed by crime and gang violence in the area. When he was at school, in Grade 10, during the apartheid era, it was a time of great disruption when the schools didn't open for the major part of the year. Athol's father made every effort to find extra lessons for Athol to continue his schooling, and together they found books that could help him complete his exams. His hard work and persistence paid off and he was given a scholarship to study engineering at Wits

SCARY STATISTICS IN MITCHELLS PLAIN
Addressing the problem of access to books in Athol's hometown, and the shocking statistic that seven out of ten learners in grade 4 are functionally illiterate, the idea of READ to RISE was born. Leaving the corporate world and investing their own money, Taryn and Athol produced a book Oaky and the Sun, which they are distributing to grade 2's in schools in Mitchells Plain. The story was inspired by one of Athol's poems with a message of hope and guiding principles for a successful life. Oaky and the Sun is the story of an acorn looking for direction in life. He is drawn by the bright light of the sun, but battered by wind. Children can relate to the imagery and are encouraged to seek their own path – focusing on the good and rising above the problems life hands them. The book has been translated into Afrikaans and isiXhosa.
LEARNING NEW SKILLS
Oaky and the Sun is beautifully illustrated by Taryn. The book was a challenge in many respects but has taught them a lot about publishing, and has given Taryn an outlet for her artistic talent. This intrepid pair are now busy with three more books for distribution at the schools – all inspired by Athol's poetry. As a youngster he kept a diary, a practice he continues today. He recorded his experiences in prose and never intended them for publishing – today he has two published books of poetry under the pseudonym AE Ballakisten, and he took part in the SANAA Africa Poetry Festival in May.
FULLY COMMITTED AND INVOLVED WITH THE CHILDREN AT THE SCHOOLS
Taryn and Athol realised that there would be a greater impact if the books were given to the children during an interactive session where volunteers read to them, making the story come to life in a fun way and encouraging them to read more for themselves. To this end they invite volunteers to go with them to schools and read to the pupils. In July the Muse reported one such reading done by Pinelander Brandan Reynolds (see Muse July 2015). Not only are the children given a
August 2015 | the muse | 15
book that they can call their own and take home, they are given pencils to write their names in the book.
TAKING THE LIBRARY TO THE CHILDREN.
To date, READ to RISE has visited over 270 classes and given out over 16 000 new books. In Mitchells Plain 90% of primary schools do not have libraries and the children are restricted access to public libraries because of the crime in the area. Therefore READ to RISE places mini-libraries in classrooms at schools (101 have been placed so far). These have 50 new story books chosen in accordance with the Department of Basic Education requirements, and supplied in a small book shelf made by Mitchells Plain residents as part of a community employment project. Sponsors names/ logos are printed on the side – or an inspirational quote chosen by the sponsor.
RECOGNITION FROM THE MAIL & GUARDIAN
The work done with READ to RISE was recognised and honoured by the Mail & Guardian, who selected Taryn in 2014 as one of the top 200 Young South Africans making a difference in our country. Chris Roper, Editor-in-chief of the Mail & Guardian says, "They’re people who can do whatever they put their mind to, using the tools and opportunities granted to us by the technology-driven era we find ourselves inhabiting, and who can switch interests and impetus whenever they see the need".
OXFORD – A DREAM COME TRUE
Athol has always wanted to study at Oxford. 17 years ago his brother gave him an Oxford jacket which he said he wouldn't wear until he had the opportunity to go there. He has had to comply with many requirements, completing two extra degrees and post graduate work, including a distinction in his course at the London School of Economics. At last he has been accepted to study Political Philosophy. He and Taryn will be travelling there together in October this year. While in the UK Taryn hopes to spread the word about READ to RISE and possibly institute the programme in the UK. The local READ to RISE NGO will be left in capable hands and Taryn will visit often to make sure all is well.
Above: A example of a mini library supplied to under resourced schools.
A MESSAGE FOR MUSE READERS Taryn: The children of today will be our leaders of tomorrow, and we have the means to uplift all children and show them a way forward, a way to rise above their circumstances. Individuals/Corporates can sponsor books and/or mini-libraries for the children – and just as important – if you can give of your time to cover books or read to the children when we deliver the books – the children love it. Volunteers meet at our offices to cover books every Wednesday and on the second last Saturday of the month from 9am to 12. Address: 204 Vineyard Centre, Cnr Vineyard & Dreyer Streets, Claremont. Call 021 671 3782. Why not join a school visit and see the delight when a child receives a book "to keep" and a pencil to write their name in it. Athol: We all have something to give. What are your skills? What is your passion? If you can read, you can help. We may not be able to eradicate illiteracy completely, but we can make a difference. Volunteers will find what a great reward it is to read to the classes and they will be inspired by the enthusiasm of the youngsters. For the youngsters: Strive for excellence and reach for your dreams.

This was a personal and profound experience for Taryn, seeing how people struggled to cope with everyday tasks because they could not speak the language or read the road signs. This was a turning point in Taryn's life. She realised she could not go back to her corporate job and felt, on their return to Cape Town that she would address the problem of illiteracy in South Africa.
TRAVELLERS
VANCOUVER It is also a safe place to walk around in and we don’t have to think twice about taking a stroll anywhere at any time of the day or night. It is lovely to feel so safe.
AN EXPLOSION OF COLOUR
In Vancouver it feels as if I was given a lucky packet by nature and I have watched with interest to see the plants morph into their full spring regalia. The street in front of our apartment building, West 6th Avenue, (I could not live on 7e laan!), is lined with Magnolia trees which have huge flowers with each petal nearly the size of a spaniel’s ear. They are too gorgeous.
Main picture: Laburnum Trees. Below: Pink Magnolias. Top Right: Cherry Blossoms.
DIFFERENT LINGO
Article & photographs by Dorothy DuPlooy FROM SNOWTIME TO SPRINGTIME
People often ask how we coped with the cold, because I think that Canada is generally known for being knee deep in snow. Vancouver is right south and on the west coast, which means that the winter is milder and they do not usually get snow. Having said that, just 130km north of us is Whistler, which was home to the 2010 Winter Olympics and is a very popular ski resort. We took a tour up to the picturesque small town of Whistler and loved the outing. We stopped at the Shannon Falls (I am a real sucker for a waterfall) and drove past the beautiful Howe Sound where we saw our first bald eagles. When we arrived the maximum temperatures here ranged between 8-10 but we are nice and toasty inside the buildings and have learnt to layer our clothing.
Recently I struggled with the snake of trolleys at a low cost supermarket called No Frills. Looking up I saw a notice: "1 loonie per trolley". Well, that’s quite rude I thought, then the penny dropped (pardon the pun) and I realized that loonie is slang for the one dollar coin, so called after the picture of the loon (bird ) on the one side. After I popped my loonie into the slot provided, the trolley released and I felt more in control and less off my “trolley”.
FUN SCULPTURES
I have included a pic here of the laughing men sculptures found at English Bay Beach. The 14 statues all have faces modelled on the face of Yue Minjun the sculptor. Erected in 2009 A-maze-ing Laughter has become a well known piece of outdoor art - popular for tourists and locals to mimic. An inscription reads "May this sculpture inspire laughter playfulness and joy in all who experience it".
NEW, MODERN AND SAFE
Spring is the time of new beginnings and it certainly has been that for me and Mark. He has taken up an assignment to start up an office for Redmane in Canada and I have taken a year sabbatical and so our move to Canada came about. We found a great apartment right near Granville Island (which is not a true island, but is a viby, arty little pimple like protrusion into Valse Creek)

FOOD FROM THE HEART By Heleen Meyer
CHICKEN & CHICKPEA TAGINE Recipe from Make five/Maak vyf Serves 4 - 6 Spice mixture 50 ml fresh coriander leaves 2 large cloves garlic, peeled 10 ml (2 tsp) finely grated lemon rind 15 ml (1 tbsp) finely grated fresh ginger 5 ml (1 tsp) mild curry powder 15 ml (1 tbsp) ground cumin 10 ml (2 tsp) ground coriander 2,5 ml (½ tsp) turmeric 2,5 ml (½ tsp) fennel seeds (optional) Chicken 15 ml (1 tbsp) olive or avocado oil 4 each chicken thighs and drumsticks, excess fat removed 10 pickling onions, peeled and halved 4 cardamom pods, crushed 1 x 410 g tin chopped tomatoes 1 x 410 g tin chickpeas with the liquid lemon juice, salt and pepper 50 g roasted flaked almonds 2 handfuls fresh coriander leaves 1. Spice mixture: Place ingredients in a pestle and mortar and mix well to form a coarse paste. Alternatively, chop all the fresh ingredients together until well blended and mix in the spices. 2. Chicken: Heat oil in a large saucepan and add the spice mixture. Sauté until aromatic. 3. Add chicken and sauté until well coated with the spices and lightly browned. Spoon out. Sauté onions and cardamom pods in the same saucepan for a few minutes until the onions are well coated with the spice mix. Stir in tomatoes and bring to a boil. 4. Return chicken to the sauce, and stir in chickpeas with the liquid. Season to taste. 5. Simmer with a lid for 45 minutes or until the chicken is cooked. 6. Serve as is or on brown basmati rice. Sprinkle with almonds and fresh coriander.

Moroccan flavours Grinding a variety of spices in a pestle and mortar and adding ingredients like garlic, ginger and coriander leaves is the perfect start to a delicious Moroccan-style paste, with an unbeatable aroma, when sautéed. A tagine is a typical Moroccan or NorthAfrican dish of slow-cooked meat or chicken and a variety of spices with veggies and often fruit. The tagine can refer to the stew itself or the original ceramic or clay container with a cone shaped lid, used to cook it in. The unique shape of the container makes for effective slowcooking, but a tagine can be prepared just as easily in a pot or oven dish. The combination of spices used for a tagine is very aromatic and not hot like most
curries. The full flavours are exceptionally satisfying and great as a winter comfort food. Using chicken, as we do in this version, is less fatty than lamb or beef and cooks much faster. Chickpeas, another typical North-African ingredient, not only add texture, but pair perfectly with the spices in this dish. Tagines are perfect for entertaining and are usually served on couscous, seasoned with fresh herbs. The nutty flavour of brown basmati rice works equally well. Accompaniments of toasted nuts, fresh mint and coriander with dollops of yoghurt make it a real flavour sensation. Don’t let winter go by without making this tagine at least once – it will be a family favourite.
