In this fusion of performance, poetry and song, Miacarla Johns sings of the pain and the hope which have marked her love story. What started out as a pleasantly unexpected invitation turned into a long and unwanted season of soul surgery, a crisis of her own making which she had no power to fix.

Then, when everything she had tried to do fell apart, it was a gentle force called grace that carried her through the mess and taught her that, no matter what, love never fails. Vulnerably sharing her highs and valleys with her soothing, jazzy timbre, Miacarla sings of a beauty which rises and rises from the ashes of life.

FIVE YEARS ON…

Incredibly, this October marks the five year anniversary of publication of the Muse magazine! Thank you to all the readers, contributors and advertisers who have made it possible and so enjoyable. We have learned so much about our amazing suburb through the many people we have met. We hope you have enjoyed reading their stories. We also look forward to meeting those of you we are yet to encounter. Glynnis, our writer and photographer, would also like to thank the many people who have taken the time to phone or write in with news or to tell us about somebody we should feature in the magazine. Keep them coming – we rely on you to share your stories with us! For the cover, I chose a traditional printer's galley illustration. It seemed appropriate as we are proudly a 'traditional' printed magazine. One of the skills I have slowly learned, and come to love, is the art of typesetting – selecting appropriate fonts and making fine adjustments to text size and spacing to arrange it on the page for ease of reading and visual appeal. Of course, it is much easier now with software and computers. I have a greater respect for the old time printers who manually set the type into galley blocks especially since they did it all with a mirror image view and the absence of colours! Sadly, we recently learned of the passing of David Carlse from RSA Litho who prints our magazine. David was our personal rep and over the years became a friend of ours. We will miss his visits, his smile and his excellent service. We welcome Christian Jaggers who will now be looking after our Muse magazine at the print shop! Enjoy the edition!

Pied Crows are the most prominent of the crows in Pinelands and they are naturally occurring (indigenous). They are very intelligent and opportunistic and have increased in numbers all over the country in recent years due to increasing urbanisation. They can easily be recognised by their white chests and backs, unlike the smaller all dark Indian House Crow (an alien species that robs bird nests) or the larger White-necked Raven (which sometimes strays from Table Mountain in winter). Pied Crows often gather together to mob larger raptors, so if you hear them calling overhead, try and see what they have found. LET BY US

The property market, like any investment, has its cycles and you must be able to ‘ride the storm.’ If you are going to borrow money to purchase property as an investment, then you must be able to pay your debt, even if the tenant defaults. If you are going to rely entirely on the rental income for loan repayments, then best you do not chose property as an investment.

I would advise owners who are thinking of renting out their homes to provide an additional income to consider this carefully. If you cannot afford the bond repayment, rather sell and invest in a more secure investment. Letting out property has added risk, not only of nonpayment and the possible cost of evictions, but also the costs relating to maintenance, rates and taxes and insurance. If you are comfortable with your financial resources then property investment remains one of the asset classes that you should consider.

LET BY US

Investing in property is something that should always be part of your pension plan. I remember the advice given to me by an astute client whilst working in the bank in the 60’s that you should always split your investments three ways – One third should be in the equity market, one third should be in cash (which would include fixed deposits or money market) and one third should be in property.

VAUGHAN GAY (6yrs) ACTS TO STOP FIRE IN CORONATION PARK On a hot and windy day in January 2015 Vaughan, his little 3 year old sister Nina-Reece and au pair Jolandie Britz arrived at their beloved Coronation Park in Pinelands. After playing around for a while, Vaughan happened to notice smoke rising from a pile of leaves. He immediately thought of the hazards of a potential fire. He ran to Jolandie and said “Please phone my Mom and ask her to bring as much water as she can.” Mother Kim Hallock Gay dropped everything, and hurried to the park with two 5 litre bottles of water. By this time small flames appeared. Vaughan grabbed one bottle of water and doused the flames himself, successfully extinguishing the fire. Congratulations to Vaughan for being alert and taking the required action to prevent a dangerous and devastating fire. A pupil at University Pre-Primary school in Mowbray, Vaughan was lucky enough to visit the Roeland St Fire Station in 2014. The way the fireman fight fires made a dramatic impression on him. Next year Vaughan will be attending Pinelands North Primary School.

STILL VOETSTOOTS

In most cases, when selling via a real estate agent, the Consumer Protection Act does not override the voetstoots clause in an offer to purchase. However, the CPA affords consumers the right to receive safe and quality goods. This does not apply in cases where the consumer has been expressly informed that the goods are offered in a specific condition and has agreed to accept them in that condition. A disclosure list in an offer to purchase, signed by both parties, makes provision for this. Sellers have a common law obligation to disclose any known latent defects to a buyer: withholding such is effectively committing fraud. Sellers however cannot be held accountable for defects of which they were unaware of at the time of the agreement.

AMAZING PEOPLE, AMAZING DOG RESCUE

056.indd 1

On returning from walking my dogs, a friend Karien and I stopped at the BP garage in Forest Drive and were told by the attendant, Sidwell, that he had seen two dogs trapped in a drain near Clyde Pinelands. Karien called the SPCA and guided them from a bridge on the N2 highway to the spot. In the meantime I tried to feed the dogs some pellets. They were very weak and ate the pellets while lying in the drain. Eventually the SPCA was able to rescue one dog, but the other one ran further into the drain. The SPCA official then phoned Fire and Rescue and soon five more guys with ropes and other rescue equipment were on the scene. One of the Fire and Rescue team went down into that hot, stinking drain and he and the team struggled for nearly 45 minutes to get the dog out. From Sidwell telling us about these dogs, to the SPCA official and the wonderful guys from Fire and Rescue, there really are good people in the world. Story and image sent by Rachel Zeelie.

Performers from Vista Nova at the Shakespeare School's Festival: Romeo – Nkanyiso Ngubane; Juliet – Chelsea Trew and the angel – Nikita Visser.

On Wednesday 24 June Vista Nova High School took part in the Shakespeare School’s Festival at Artscape, performing a riveting Romeo and Juliet to much acclaim. After rehearsing for 7 months the hard work was rewarded as they stepped out into the mystery of the stage and allowed the iridescent lights to whisk them away into another world. The actors were highly committed to each moment of performance, the well-oiled back stage crew worked magic with quick changes and the talents engaged in sound, makeup, props and scenery gave the play artistic flair. Although the play was a tragedy, much laughter and fun was had during rehearsals and great thanks goes to festival director Kseniya Filinova Bruton and the Artscape team for filling the festival day with wonder and delight. The play will remain etched into the hearts of the students with the passionate strokes of Shakespeare's plume: “For never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” By Lauren Bates, teacher at Vista Nova.

APPEAL FOR SCRIBES FOR VISTA NOVA HIGH SCHOOL

Many of the Vista Nova students can't write tests and exams for themselves due to physical and learning disabilities. They rely on scribes to read and write tests for them. We urgently need some new recruits to help with scribing. • Do you have time on a Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 10:45? • Do you have transport to the school in Loerie Road? • Can you spare larger chunks of time during exams? This rewarding use of time will be a great blessing for a young person with a disability and will give you the opportunity to become a part of our unique Vista Nova family. Call Bianca 021 531 7192.

By Carol Booth Principal of Cannons Creek Independent School When I was a child we were always taught that we should be seen but not heard. It was as if we did not exist in the eyes of parent gatherings. I believe that we always over-react and the pendulum never stops in the centre but swings to the other side – and the result is that children may think that they are the centre of the universe and that adults are there for their benefit. Teaching our children etiquette, respect and the small gestures in life from a very early age is so important and makes our world a better place. For example, I was taught to always let the elders through the door first and so I have stood back for my sixty odd years but now when I stand back for an elder, I find teenagers barging through or ahead of their elders. Sometimes I even have to stop at a doorway because the youngster definitely is not going to stop! A sad day I know, but clearly we have letPMthe pendulum swing too far. 4:20

COMMUNITY NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Not only is it natural to want to find a bathroom clean, there is a safety issue to consider as well. Children need to learn that there is a chance of spreading infection if hands are not washed properly after using the toilet. All used toilet paper should go into the toilet bowl, and the toilet seat is

to be cleaned after use. Flushing is also important as well as other habits that show consideration to our fellow man are important, such as replacing the toilet roll with a new one when necessary, cleaning the basin after washing hands and straightening the towel after use so that it dries properly for the next person.

MEAL TIMES

Meal times can present an opportunity for the family to share experiences and conversation while we break from the busy technological world around us. It is also a time to learn how manners can add to a pleasant experience with friends and acquaintances later in life. Seemingly small things are important: such as not talking with one's mouth full, waiting until everyone has their food before eating, allowing others to have a chance to talk and afterwards helping with the clearing away.

GENERAL

Nothing makes a child stand out more than showing respect for elders. Standing up, saying good morning or at least greeting them pleasantly will go a long way to earning respect too. The list is endless but if we teach our children the suggestions above, our world will once again be a lovely place for all generations to live in harmony. 

MONEY MATTERS

Creating and protecting your wealth

PREPARATION OF YOUR LAST WILL & TESTAMENT

Your Will Your Way

Our complimentary service to the Pinelands & Thornton communities

Your Will, your way

Having a Will is not the privilege of the impossibly wealthy. It is the right of every South African who wishes to plan their legacy while they are still alive. Anyone who has assets and/or minor children, and who wishes to lessen the burden on their loved ones, should have a Will. The drafting of a Will is a carefully crafted gift and an act of love towards those who are dear to you.

Why do many people die without a Will?

Reasons range from misconceptions such as one’s estate not being large enough to warrant it, to ill-fated beliefs that there is a ‘good understanding’ between one’s children as to how your estate should be divided. Sadly, many young couples delay preparing a Will – sometimes until it is too late. It is claimed The Buddha said, “The problem is, you think you have time.” You are never too young, too poor or too busy to prepare a Will.

What happens if you die without a Will?

If you die intestate (i.e. without a Will), your estate will be distributed in terms of the law of intestate succession. The Master of the High Court will appoint a curator, and any assets left to your minor children will go to the Guardian's Fund where they will be administered by authorities until your children are old enough to inherit. In addition to this, the State will appoint a guardian who may not suit your choice.

Who can draft a Will?

Although anyone can effectively draft a Will, it must meet certain legal requirements and it is strongly recommended that an estate planning expert drafts your Will – regardless of the size of your estate. Simple errors such as allowing a beneficiary in your Will to sign as a witness can result in him/her being disqualified from inheriting.

What is an Executor?

The executor (or executrix in the case of a female) winds up your estate and distributes your assets to your nominated heirs. It is important to appoint someone with sound financial and administrative skills, and who has your personal best interests at heart.

What is a guardian?

If you have minor children, it is imperative to name and appoint a legal guardian in your Will. The appointed guardian would take custody of your children and care for them until they reach adulthood. Leaving

October 2015 | the muse | 11

By Sue Torr Director at Crue Invest

the guardianship of your minor children to the state is less than ideal.

What is a testamentary trust?

A testamentary trust, which is set up in terms of your Will but only comes into being upon the death of the testator, is designed to protect the interests of your minor children. All money bequeathed to your children will be managed by the trust and its appointed trustees until they are old enough to manage their own financial affairs. As the testator, you can choose who you wish to appoint as trustees, and you can also stipulate at what age the assets will transfer to your children.

How often should I update my Will?

The need to revise one’s Will is generally triggered by events such as a birth, marriage, divorce, the death of a beneficiary or executor, or gaining property that is not part of your existing Will. Failure to keep your Will updated may result in heartache such as children not inheriting, or your exspouse unintentionally inheriting from your Will. Review your Will once a year to ensure that it still reflects your desired legacy.

Where should I keep my Will?

Ideally, one’s Will should be kept in a fireproof safe and its whereabouts should be known to your loved ones. It is also advisable to keep a copy of your Will with your lawyer or financial planner.

What if I can’t find my Will?

Having recently participated in South Africa’s 5th financial planning week, we became acutely aware of the widespread need for effective estate planning. In response to this need, Crue Invest has decided to provide an ongoing, complimentary Will drafting service to the community. Our aim is to ensure that as many people as possible have a valid, updated Will in place. Regardless of your net worth, a written Will ensures that your estate can be wound up more efficiently and alleviates the administrative burden on your loved ones.

“ The only thing you take with you when you’re gone is what you leave behind. ” JOHN ALLSTON

You are welcome to contact our offices on (021) 530 8500 to schedule an appointment. Alternatively, please email sue@crue.co.za and we will gladly set up an appointment for you.

About Eric Jordaan

Director at Crue Invest Eric has extensive knowledge of financial planning law, with over twelve years financial services industry experience. He is passionate about estate planning and the effective use of estate planning tools to achieve the client’s goals. Eric holds a BA LLB, an LLM in Tax and an Advanced Post Graduate Diploma in financial planning. He is a member of the Financial Planning Institute and an admitted attorney.

Come and have coffee with us. We’d love to help you plan your legacy.

If you have misplaced your Will, it is strongly recommended that you have a new Will drafted. You would need to explicitly revoke all previous Wills and codicils. Far from being a complex legal document designed for those who have amassed enormous wealth or as a tool for overcontrolling testators to ‘rule from the grave’, a Will should be seen as a final gift of love that has less to do with you, and more to do with those who are left in the wake of your death. 

JAPAN The 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan in August this year was scheduled to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima. Special Remembrance services were held, with scouts participating. Tristan Ahlers: One of the best parts of the Jamboree was the pretour. We went to many different places. The most memorable place was the Tokyo Tower.

Ashley Davies: I don't have a favourite or significant memory as each day was so different from the last, but I think this picture perfectly sums up the feeling of appreciation and awe I felt throughout my journey.

Scouting does not just involve cookie selling, knot tying, fire making and helping grannies across the street. The Scout Movement was originally started by BadenPowell for teenage youth to be adequately prepared for serving King/Queen and country. I had the honour of joining 152 Scouts from around South Africa on a journey to the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Yamaguchi, Japan. A land holding 48 degrees in temperature on a good day, this indeed did make travel, sleeping and pretty much everything, a challenge. When we arrived in Japan, the first thing that came to my mind was the cleanliness, and the fact that each and every person took pride in their job, whether it be from janitorial duties or currency exchange, to a stock exchange speculator or the head of a top dollar / Yen business. I enjoyed the locals' tendency to smile at anybody who walked past. It reminded me how a simple smile can change your disposition. After a week of visiting various religious centres, shrines, markets, Disneyland and traditional food stalls, we arrived in Yamaguchi for the start of a 10 day adventure with every possible culture in Scouting. After arriving at our campsite, pitching tents, setting up an impressive gateway, mingling with neighbouring Scouts from various countries and using anything possible for a fan, for the heat was like standing in an

oven next to the Christmas Turkey, I was hit with a bomb of realisation, I was in Japan, on an island, with 33 000 Scouts, attending the 23rd World Scout Jamboree! Pretty cool right? Excuse me, that’s an understatement. This is something huge, this is an honour, this is the definition of a ‘’once in a life time opportunity!” For the next 10 days, I experienced every culture imaginable. I learned languages, handshakes, catch phrases. I traded scarfs, shirts, badges, badges, badges, flags, and best of all, my vuvuzela (for a kimono). A big highlight was the social rugby games we played every second evening against true South African rivals. This included New Zealand, Australia and Fiji. We won all of them, in case you were wondering. I took part in a peace module, science activities, a biathlon, a social sports day on the beach, cultural day, where we served rooibos tea and rusks - which the American Scouts called ‘’stale biscuits’’ – and many many more activities. I made friendships that I know will still be strong way into the future. This was something that I love about Scouting. We are all caring and welcoming to each other. We are all part of an international movement that has been growing for over a century. I think one of the activities that deserves special mention is the memorial anniversary of the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I had the extreme

PERSONAL MEMORIES Josiah Senior at a resort near Mt Fuji.

Josiah Senior: The 2015 World Scout Jamboree in Japan was one of the most amazing experiences of my Scouting career so far. It was a very special event as it was my last activity as a scout. My 18th birthday was on the Jamboree, so now I progress through the Scouting ladder to become an adult leader. New opportunities have been presented to get involved with Scouting in different countries. Through visiting troops of different nationalities, I have seen and learnt many things that I would never have known otherwise. The Jamboree may have been in Japan, but it revealed the world.

Alec Cockburn: The Jamboree is all about the experience itself. There will not be one scout that will say that they had not learned anything on Jamboree, because of the magnitude of options available. It is truly something you don’t want to miss out on during your scouting career. Niall Sampson: I made so many memories at the Jamboree and found someone who looks just like me! Being with all my friends in Disneyland, experiencing different cultures and seeing Hiroshima and all the devastation that happened with my own two eyes.

honour of visiting “Ground Zero”. This is where the first atom bomb was dropped. Ground Zero included a hospital which still stands today, a river which runs parallel to the hospital and a park with various memorial shrines and plaques. For the duration of my time at this memorial park I was continuously reminded of what horror took place here. The amount of sorrow that I could feel, but yet the sense of peace and prayer, and no urge for revenge or anger. I could see how each and every person at the park would bow, pray and walk away peacefully when passing the memorial stand. It made me acknowledge that revenge is not the answer and that seeking guidance through prayer and practice is the solution.

Jonathan Campbell: My time in Japan was one of the greatest times of my life. At first I was nervous, being so far away from my family in an unfamiliar country. The language and culture were very different. I enjoyed the pre-jamboree tour, going to Disneyland, Tokyo Tower, Mount Fuji and Koyoto. At Jamboree, to see all the Scouts from different countries and cultures was amazing. On Culture Day, I enjoyed sharing in South Africa’s own culture by serving iced Rooibos Tea and Ouma Rusks to scouts from other cultures who had never tasted them before. It was also a great privilege to go to Hiroshima and to the National Peace Memorial Hall. I will not forget that time. I would also encourage all Scouts that if they get the opportunity, they should to go to the next 24th Scout Jamboree in the USA in 2019.

As the 10 days drew to an end, all 33 000 Scouts were packing up their respective campsites, saying tear-filled goodbyes, trading the last of our spare uniforms. This was something that changed the hearts and minds of hopefully all participants. It made each person have a different view on life and what it offers. Upon arrival at the Cape Town International Airport in South Africa, I felt a wave of relief as I was back home, back home to a loving family, and I knew in my heart as I walked off the plane that I had just completed a journey that had changed me and what my take is on the world today.

CALLAN COHEN Meet the writer of the regular bird feature in the Muse, founder of Birding Africa, bird enthusiast and lover of nature who enjoys living with his wife Deirdre and son Finn in Scarborough. Callan Cohen has had a lifelong appreciation of birds and revels in the birding and nature tours that take him to see exotic birds worldwide. SURROUNDED BY NATURE

BIRDING AFRICA TOURS - THE BEGINNING

While studying at the University of Cape Town, Callan started his business Birding Africa. The call of nature is strong for Callan and his interests spread beyond the world of birds to flora, trees, butterflies, frogs, dragonflies and mammals. A research associate of the Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology at UCT, Callan completed his doctorate in collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley on the evolution of African desert birds. He has co authored two birding books - Southern African Birdfinder: Where to Find 1400 Bird Species in Southern Africa and Madagascar by Callan Cohen, Claire Spottiswoode and Jonathan Rossouw; and Essential Birding: Western South Africa - Key Routes from Cape Town to the Kalahari by Callan Cohen and Claire Spottiswoode.

ADVICE FOR WOULD BE BIRD WATCHERS

Firstly get yourself a good pair of binoculars. Then invest in a good book to aid with bird identification. Joining a birding group adds to the pleasure as you can travel to places together and share the experience learning from each other. Listen out for bird calls – this will alert you to the fact that there is a

www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za

bird in the area. When looking for particular species, find the flora that they enjoy feeding from – and wait. Patience is paramount, especially if you are hoping to photograph birds, which is not easy. Good places recommended by Callan for bird watching in Cape Town include Intaka Island which is safe with plenty of birds; Rondevlei and the Cape Flats Nature Reserve at Strandfontein Waste Water Works.

LOSS OF HABITAT IN PINELANDS

Callan was a resident of Pinelands for seven years so when we hear the call of the Bokmakierie – he comments that due to lack of habitat the call is no longer heard in Pinelands. Then we hear a Cape Robin chat – but it was mimicking the Olive thrush – and we see both of these birds in Pinelands. There are smart phone apps available with the various bird calls but it is always better to hear the call in nature. Google images is also a resource used in bird identification.

LOCAL PROJECT FOR BIRDERS

The annual Wider Cape Town Birders Challenge is an annual event where birders aim to list as many birds as possible in a calender year, seen or heard within a 150Km radius of the Cape Town Stadium. This includes the Pelagic Waters South West of Cape Point. Follow on facebook.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST BIRD TO FIND

For the tiniest glimpse of the Congo Peafowl I walked 170 km over 17 days, wading knee deep through 30km of rivers. Other rare

finds for me have been the Namuli Apalis in Mozambique, described in 1932 and then not seen since, and the Warsangli Linnets in the Daalloo mountains of Somalia.

SEEING THE WORLD WITH BIRDING AFRICA

Birding Africa now has many tour group leaders with a wealth of knowledge about birds, mammals and nature. Callan has lead more than 100 tours into 23 African countries for Birding Africa and also for British and American Tour companies. He was also a consultant for the BBC Natural History Unit showing Bill Oddie birds in Cape Town. Together with his wife Deirdre, who holds M.Sc. degrees in Ecology, they have lead more than 23 tours to Madagascar, focussing not only on the five endemic families of birds but also on primates and mammals – the many species of lemur being the favourite. Together Deirdre and Callan also host tours to Rwanda, Gabon, Tanzania and his favourite destination for birds - Uganda.

INTERESTING BIRDER TO FOLLOW

Earlier this year Callan hosted Noah Stryker, the 28 year-old ornithologist from Oregon who is aiming to see 5 000 bird species in a year. If successful he will be the first person to do so. Noah writes an interesting blog of his adventure and daily bird sightings. We look forward to more of Callan's bird features in the Muse and possibly some butterflies in our nature section. 

The Hub in Scarborough was the ideal place to meet - a source of free range chicken eggs for Callan, a good meal and excellent coffee, while we kept an eye open for the mother baboon with her baby clinging to her belly. Callan is Capetonian born and bred with a love for birds fuelled by the challenge of seeing the vast variety of bird species.

PINELANDERS Well known personality Tony Sanderson has been in broadcasting for more than 50 years. He has tried to retire 5 times, and even though he has just celebrated his 71st birthday, he finds himself at the forefront of another exciting first in South African Radio. The new offices at Golf Park are abuzz with preparation for the launch of a new music station Magic 828am, of which Tony is the CEO. We speak to this energetic pioneer about his career, the new station and life in Pinelands.

TONY SANDERSON

STRINGS TO TONY'S BOW

Tony is best known for his presentation of The Chuckle and Chat Show in the 80's – which boasted one of he biggest listenerships in South Africa. You Must Be Joking with Leon Schuster was another very popular production. The Solid Gold music station which ran for a couple of years in Johannesburg was also Tony's brainchild. He has directed and produced documentaries for SABC TV and BOP TV He lectures in electronic media and is also a motivational speaker. These are but

a few of his exploits, not least of which is the fact that he was a professional soccer player with West Ham United and coached Orlando Pirates for three years. He remains a fervent Liverpool FC fan.

MAGIC 828AM

This new venture that is unfolding on our doorstep can be considered a jewel of broadcasting history in South Africa. Magic 828am has its own licence to operate as an independent radio station, with a dedicated 95m commercial mast at Klipheuwel. Tony is a shareholder along with Cape Media, and Independent Newspapers. The station's official opening broadcast will be on October 1st - but you can catch a taste of it right now on live streaming – go to www.magic828.am.

houses and cars. The offices in Golf Park in Pinelands don't just house a radio station, but are fully equipped with a green screen for video interviews for You Tube or website marketing.

HOBBIES

Besides walking Max on the beach and going out for good meals, Tony is a prolific reader. He has a degree in Industrial Psychology and enjoys reading books on the paranormal – he finds these most interesting because the scientific study on this subject doesn't have the answers. The Muse wishes Tony and Magic 828am all the very best. 

MODERNISING SOUTH AFRICAN RADIO

Tony dreams of a fun radio station with "more music, and less talk". He aims to include good news bringing cheer into our lives with some weather and sport. His DJ's are referred to as entertainers and will play music from the 60's to the present. The station plans huge give-aways including

Italian born Tony has a love for good food – Italian food – he loves cooking and admits freely that his favourite restaurant in Pinelands is Magica Roma. Although Tony and his wife Jean have an idyllic home in Shelley Point, complete with a giant black poodle called Max, his commitment to the new radio station meant finding a place to live in Pinelands. He describes the neighbourhood as having a village atmosphere, where people know each other – and know a lot about each other he says with a wry smile...

Cheers with Charles!

History and Heritage at Newlands Brewery After a comfortable lunch at the Josephine Mill restaurant in Newlands we went across the road to meet our guide who was to take us through the workings of the huge brewery that boasts many years of history and brewing success. In 1658, Pieter Visagie brewed the first beer from the waters of the Liesbeeck River and had ready customers in the form of sailors who, at that time, thought that beer prevented scurvy. He named the brewery Mariendahl after his wife. Over the years there have been various brewers connected to Newlands Brewery – Jacob Letterstedt who arrived with the 1820 Settlers; Anders Ohlsson from Sweden bought the Mariendahl Brewery in 1889 and with it came the rights to two mountain springs. Ohlsson worked on creating a merger between Ohlsson's and The South African Breweries (which consisted of Castle and Union Breweries). This came to fruition in 1956. Charles Glass founded the Castle Brewery in Johannesburg in 1894. Subsequently, SAB merged with Miller Breweries of the USA to form SABMiller. The tour at Newlands brewery takes one through the whole plant from fermenting

the hops to to the final stage of bottling and packing. It is only open to over 18's; and is not wheelchair friendly as there are a number of steps and galleyways to traverse. There are some interesting heritage buildings worth taking a look at. In 1995 the original buildings that were still standing were granted national heritage status – the old malthouse; the oasthouse; and Mariendahl Tower Brewery. They have been beautifully preserved. The natural spring still runs to this day and is used by the brewery to make their beer. On the corner of Letterstedt Road and Main Road, next to the brewery, members of the public can collect spring water free of charge every day from 6am to 9pm. There are a few tours every day except Sunday. Booking is essential. Call 021 658 7440 or email newlandstours@za.sabmiller.com. Tours cost R80 including tasting afterwards. FOOD FROM THE HEART By Heleen Meyer

OAT & RICOTTA CRUMPETS WITH CHOCOLATE SAUCE Recipe from Make five/ Maak vyf Makes 25 – 30 small crumpets Chocolate sauce 15 ml (1 tbsp) cocoa powder 125 ml (½ cup) milk 60 ml (¼ cup) fresh cream 50 g good quality milk or dark chocolate, chopped 10 ml (2 tsp) soft brown sugar 2 cardamom pods, crushed Crumpets 2 eggs, beaten 300 g ricotta cheese 350 ml milk 5 ml (1 tsp) vanilla essence 250 ml (1 cup) self-raising flour 250 ml (1 cup) oats 45 ml (3 tbsp) melted butter oil for frying 1. Sauce: Mix cocoa with some of the milk to make a paste. Mix with the rest of the ingredients in a saucepan. Heat until the chocolate melts and the sugar dissolves. Simmer for a few minutes and set aside. 2. Crumpets: Beat eggs, ricotta, milk and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Stir in the flour and oats until well mixed. Stir in the melted butter. 3. Heat a thin layer of oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Pour spoonfuls of batter into the pan and fry until bubbles form on top. Carefully turn over and fry until golden brown and cooked. 4. Spoon out and keep warm. Repeat with the rest of the mixture and serve with the warm chocolate sauce.

Pinelands resident, foodie and author of Food from the Heart, and the new Make five /Maak vyf.

Homemade family treat Many of the articles I have written for this page had a specific theme and accompanying recipe. This month I had no specific theme, but really wanted to share this recipe, as it is one of those that you just have to treat your family to, sooner or later. While I was busy putting everything together for the page, Max told me that this issue will celebrate the 5th anniversary for the Muse. Yippie! Now we have a reason to celebrate and treat ourselves with something delicious (and a theme for the page). These crumpets are just the thing for a weekend brunch and you can decide whether you want to serve them with the chocolate sauce or cinnamon sugar as dessert. Combinations like bacon and banana or bacon and berries are very popular, especially on crumpets. Either way, it will be loved by all.

When you’re in for a treat, homemade is always best, as you know what goes into it. If you are trying to eat a little healthier, then the oats in these crumpets are ideal to add fibre and to keep you feeling full for some time without eating a lot of refined carbs. The ricotta contributes to a soft and smooth texture – despite using oats. If your family ask for these again, you can add grated apple or even a few blueberries for an interesting change. These are easy to make and ideal for the kids to help with over a weekend or during the school holidays. And if you don’t want to make crumpets, then at least treat yourself to the chocolate sauce. It’s heavenly over ice cream or fruit salad. Remember to use a good quality eating chocolate and definitely not cooking chocolate.

Cook up a storm with Make five Heleen’s recipe book Make five/Maak vyf inspires us all to use a variety of everyday ingredients in five delectable and interesting ways. The recipes are easy and versatile with lots of practical tips on how to cook delicious, wholesome food for your family. Heleen also shares easy kitchen ideas to take the planet into consideration on a daily basis. To order a signed copy of Maak vyf/Make five or for more information on any of her books, visit www.heleenmeyer.co.za, email her on heleen.m@iafrica.com or like her Facebook page www.facebook.com/ HeleenMeyerFood.
