WELCOME About the Cover: Pinelander Dorothy du Plooy is back from a year long stay in Canada. Muse readers enjoyed reading about her travels in the articles on Vancouver in August 2015; and Hawaii in April 2105. This edition reveals Alaska. Being back in South Africa satisfies Dorothy's longing for family, friends and good food, but she remembers fondly the safety of the areas she lived in, the organisation - and the opportunity to travel to far flung places. Welcome home Dorothy and thank you for allowing us to be armchair travellers with you!
WE'RE BACK AND READY FOR 2016! We are back after a much-needed December break, which included stays with family at Addo Elephant Park and Buffelsfontein Wildlife Reserve up the West Coast. We also saw in the New Year with friends at Klondyke Cherry Farm in the mountains above Ceres. We love visiting all of these places for the stillness and drama that only nature can provide, but stays there are always made all the more special by the people we share the time with. It was back to work soon after our return though, to get the first edition of the Muse for 2016 into production. It's always hard to get 'back onto the saddle' after the idyllic holiday lifestyle, but words must be written and designs must be done… So, here is the new Muse. We hope you enjoy it!

BIRDS IN PINELANDS This black and white bird is easily recognised as small flocks fly daily over Pinelands, often in a v-formation. Ancient Egyptians regarded this species as sacred and its black unfeathered head can be seen in hieroglyphics. They are resident in Cape Town and breed in colonies in wetlands such as Rondevlei. The long bill is used for probing in the mud and a special organ in the bill tip senses tiny movements of invertebrates in the mud. DEALING WITH ANGER IN CHILDREN
By Carol Booth Principal of Cannons Creek Independent School
Most parents have little understanding of the nature of anger and how to protect their children from excessive anger and how they can teach their child to master this powerful and complex emotion. The most common manifestation of childhood anger is oppositional anger.
CAUSES OF OPPOSITIONAL ANGER
Children with oppositional anger have not had any serious emotional pain or hurts in their lives. They have been over-indulged emotionally or materially by their parents who acted towards them in a permissive, rather than in a responsible manner. The issue is that these children were not given appropriate correction and punishment for hostile and disrespectful behaviours and were not taught the virtues leading to the development of a healthy personality. Some angry and defiant behaviours are the result of serious emotional hurts from selfish, irresponsible or angry parents, siblings or peers. Other causes of unreasonable anger are jealousy, loneliness, lack of confidence and excessive television viewing that fosters selfishness. Engaging in violent video games is another factor in the over-reactions of children in anger.
PARENTS TEACH UNDERSTANDING AND FORGIVENESS
Parents can encourage good character development by teaching children to be understanding of the situation; and forgiving them when they are angry. Appropriate punishment for angry behaviours often helps a child learn to control their anger. Apologising to the recipient of the anger and then learning to forgive those who have hurt us is recommended - done on a daily basis this will lead to better control of the anger. This process takes several months so don’t give up! When you see angry behaviour, it is important to step in immediately and discuss the incident with your child. Then hand out the appropriate correction, and when that has been completed, go to your child and say how proud you are of them that they are trying to master their anger.

SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP
What happens if we don’t address the problem? In most cases your child slowly is left out of games and activities, is no longer invited to parties or play dates and your child gets even more angry. Should you reach this stage, it is important to seek professional help as quickly as possible. When caught early, it is easier to relearn the correct behaviour. Remember that the professionals will be teaching your child and you, the parent, new behaviours. All that parents wish for is for their child to play with others ‘nicely’ and to be able to interact in the correct manner with their peers in order for them to be happy and to have friends. It is therefore very important that we, the parents, act as soon as possible. And, before you know it, your child will be able to integrate with all their friends and will be a pleasure to have as a guest!

A few pupils went to visit the KIDCRU team at Tygerberg hospital to hand over their donations, and were given a tour of KIDCRU, visiting a children’s ward in the hospital. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to see the good work people do on a daily basis and how their small donations would help. The Pinehurst School choir provided entertainment.

MICKLEFIELD SCHOOL GRADE 3 VISITS THE BROWN AND ANNIE RETIREMENT HOME Grade 3 teacher, Brighid Ryan, accompanied Judi Francisco when she first interviewed Bam Hughes and Richard Lawrenson - WWII veterans (see Muse December 2015). This led to the Grade 3 class visiting the Brown and Annie Retirement Home and the girls doing a musical performance and sharing tea with the residents. The Grade 3 girls then asked the rest of Micklefield School to upcycle their bandanas from Bandana
day, and these were turned into attractive table cloths to be used to brighten up the home’s dining area. The table cloths were delivered to Brown and Annie, and the girls sang Christmas carols and provided cakes for tea. Below: The Grade 3 class with their teacher, Brighid Ryan and mom Jax Douglas-Jones, who helped sew the bandanas altogether.

RETIREMENT TIPS
FROM FINANCIAL & LEGAL EXPERTS
HOW DO THE RECENT RETIREMENT REFORMS AFFECT YOU?
By Sue Torr
Director at Crue Invest Although the investment arena may appear complicated, and highly regulated, there are a set of underlying fundamentals when it comes to preparing for one’s retirement that are universally true and indisputably sound. Only 6% of South Africans are able to retire comfortably without adjusting their standard of living, so now it is more important than ever to address one’s retirement savings. Here are our ten triedand-tested tips for retirement planning: 1. It’s never too late to start As in the case of diet and exercise, it is never too late to start saving for retirement. Whilst the consensus is that one should start saving with one’s first pay cheque, the reality is that this very rarely happens. The Chinese proverb rings true: “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” If you didn’t start with your first pay cheque, then start now. 2. Set retirement goals No financial planner can hope to provide investment advice without determining your retirement goals first. Developing your own retirement plan requires a full understanding of when you wish to retire, where you would like to live, what income you would need to live comfortably and what capital outflows you anticipate. In the timeless words of Lewis Carroll, “If you don’t know where you are going, then any road will get you there.” 3. Spread your investment risk Not diversifying your investments is perhaps the greatest risk to your retirement funding. Many entrepreneurial-minded people spend their careers building up enormous equity in their businesses, personal property portfolios or even gold, with the belief that this equity can easily be realised at retirement. However, as the axing of Minister Nhlanhla Nene demonstrated to us, the idiosyncrasies of politics and economics can have unforeseeable effects on businesses. As a general rule, Easter is the only time of the year when it’s perfectly acceptable to put all your eggs in one basket. 4. Insist on transparency Old-school, insurance-based retirement annuities and endowment policies were notorious for their lack of transparency concerning commissions, investment fees
February 2016 | the muse | 11
Creating and protecting your wealth
and penalties. Thankfully, however, the new generation of fee-based financial advisors and reputable investment houses provide full transparency when it comes to advice fees, investment fees and targeting investment returns. 5. Preserve your capital When transferring between jobs, it is tempting to cash out retirement funding, forgetting that any withdrawal from accumulated savings interrupts the power of compounding interest, and the investor goes ‘back to begin'. Preservation funds are good safe havens for one’s retirement capital. 6. Use the tax deductions With effect from 1 March 2016, investors will qualify for a tax deduction of up to 27.5% of their taxable incomes towards a retirement annuity. This is a significant tax deduction that should not be ignored. 7. Don’t under-estimate your longevity We are living longer than any generation before us thanks to enormous advances in science and medicine. Whilst women tend to live longer than men, this is not normally reflected in their retirement funding. When developing your retirement plan, consider the reality that you may well live to age 100. 8. Buy and hold Stick with a buy-and-hold investment strategy and take advantage of the power of compounding - the potential of invested money to make more money. It’s for no small reason that Albert Einstein said that “compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it. He who doesn’t, pays it.” 9. Don’t bank on a lottery win The reality is that one’s chance of winning the South African Lotto is 1 in 13,983,816, which means that you have to buy 13,983,816 tickets to be sure that you will win this prize – at a total cost of R48,943,356. Take a raffle ticket, for sure, but don’t gamble with your retirement. 10. Just do it Thankfully we operate in a very wellregulated financial services environment which provides an excellent array of retirement funding vehicles for us to choose from – including the newly implemented tax-free savings accounts. Remember, the worst thing you can possibly do is nothing at all.
The enactment of the 2015 Taxation Laws Amendment Act completes the legislative process to enable the tax harmonisation of retirement fund contributions and benefits. These changes will take effect on 1 March 2016. All new contributions into provident funds after 1 March 2016 by those younger than 55 years will be subject to the twothirds annuitisation requirement, but only once the amount at retirement exceeds the threshold. In addition to this, all individual taxpayers who contribute towards a retirement fund (pension or provident fund or retirement annuity) after 1 March 2016, will qualify for a tax deduction up to 27.5% of the greater of taxable income or remuneration, up to a limit of R350 000.
HOW CAN WE HELP YOU? As fee-based financial advisors, we consider it our job to untangle the legal and financial complexities which are inherent in the retirement industry, and to repackage them in a manner that anyone can understand. Each and every retirement plan is developed by our team of financial planners, which includes experts in tax, investments, estate planning and group benefits.

THE NEW SHOP
"The Charity Shop is just off Voortrekker Road, with few direct passers by, so I have had to work hard at getting customers to the front door. On Valentine's day last year I stood outside with flyers advertising free cookies to anyone who came in! A big A-frame board is prominent on

Gloria and her husband Roger, moved to Pinelands in 1988 and feel it is important to keep busy in retirement. They give their wholehearted support to KAPS, a charity that is close to their hearts. From day one they have worked hard at collecting saleable items, cleaning and repairing them. They take no money for administration, or petrol and in the early days they used to buy the goods to make sure they had some money to give to KAPS. Gloria describes the area that KAPS services, in the little Karoo as "God's forgotten country". The rural folk need help with animal medical problems,
sterilisation, flea and tick control, and education in caring for animals. The facility is run by Colette Teale with help from her husband Percy. She initiated the NGO in 2001 on a farm near Barrydale at the foot of the Langeberg mountains. They employ some inspectors and have a mobile unit that serves an area covering 5 000 square kilometres. Any dogs taken in are kept in safe homes and fostered until they are well enough to be adopted. Sterilisations are organised with vets who operate for reduced fees. The KAPS monthly newsletter is prepared by a willing volunteer in the UK - "it would be wonderful to get someone local to help with this " says Gloria, "and KAPS also needs a webmaster to update the website on a regular basis".

SUCCESSFUL FUND RAISING
Gloria was introduced to the work done at KAPS in Barrydale through a friend Sue Blias. Together they collected donated items and set up a sales table on the verge opposite Stellenberg School. Their success motivated them to move their charity to Sue's garage, where they raised money for KAPS for another 10 years. In December 2014 Gloria decided to open a charity shop in Parow, and in just one year managed to raise R60 000 - and the shop only opens on Fridays and Saturday mornings - "it is all I can cope with right now" says Gloria.

We have also raised funds from the sale of a donated Royal Albert Tea Set. So many people have helped us with our endeavour to help the forgotten animals in the Karoo. Other Pinelanders have given generously of their time and talent and we are very grateful to all who help us through their shops helping to sell specialist items."

Gloria believes that we should all count our blessings and remember those that are in need. Her passion is for the animals in the rural areas who are not in the direct eye of the generous public. She has found it rewarding to "get out of her comfort zone" to raise funds for a good cause. ROB AND LIAM BUCK
On Saturday, 12 December 2015, Pinelanders Rob and Liam Buck took to the athletics track to compete in the Tygerberg NLC Summer Series Athletics Meeting in Parow.
FATHER AND SON AT THE SAME TRACK
This was a special occasion where father and son competed in the same track athletics meeting - something that does not happen often. Even more noteworthy is that they both won medals and came in the top three in their respective events.
BRINGING THE MEDALS HOME
Liam won the gold medal in the u11 100m race, running a very fast time of 13.13sec. Later in the day, his Dad (Rob) competed in the men's Long Jump competition, jumping 6.14m for third place and the bronze medal. Rob Buck had this to say: "I was very happy with my Long Jump performance and was somewhat surprised to win a medal as I was competing against
guys who are 15-20 years younger than me. It was really great to compete in the same athletics meeting with Liam. His 100m race was impressive and very fast for an 11 year old." Rob jokingly added: "...and he will soon be faster than me - a scary thought."
LIAM - A KEEN SPORTSMAN
Liam has set nine new athletics records at his school, Pinehurst Primary, has represented WP and Western Cape schools at the South African Primary School Athletics Championships and is apparently on a mission to run faster than his Dad as soon as possible.
TAKING THE LONG JUMP TO PERTH
Rob competes in Masters Athletics (in the 40-44 age category), was the South African Champion in his age group for the Long Jump last year and is currently training for the World Masters Athletics Championships in Perth later this year.

HELP FOR THE HURTING
Until you’ve been there it’s hard to understand the hurt that comes from separation and divorce. Sometimes friends and family simply don’t know how to help. The same is true with the death of a spouse, child, family member or friend. Children experiencing any of the above situations often struggle even more than their parents, resulting in life-hindering consequences if they are unable to heal and move on. Happily, help is at hand. Three programs being offered by the Pinelands Baptist church offer a way forward from pain and sadness.

COMMENTS FROM PARTICIPANTS’ PARENTS:

ALASKA
Main Picture: The Margerie Glacier. Article & photographs by Dorothy du Plooy
Rounding off a year long stay in Vancouver, Dorothy and Mark took the opportunity to tick off one of their bucket list dream trips. Taking advantage of the proximity of Vancouver to Anchorage - a mere three hour flight away, they travelled the "inside passage" of Alaska, experiencing glaciers, the autumn colours of the forests, amazing wildlife and hoped to see the incredible Northern Lights. DEPARTURE FROM ANCHORAGE
I expected Anchorage to be covered in snow, but as we arrived at the beginning of autumn, the grass was green and the gardens were a mass of flowers, with hanging baskets on all the lamp posts overflowing with cascades of lobelias and pelargoniums. The temperature range was a comfortable 6-15 oC. Anchorage is a very quaint town with a population just over 300 000, which is less than half of the 737 000 total population of Alaska. The people of Alaska are very friendly and helpful.
THE TRAIN TO SEWARD
We took the Coastal Classic train transfer from Anchorage to Seward, where the Oosterdam was moored. We had five hours of picturesque scenery as the train puffed all along the Cook Inlet, with towering mountains on the one side and still aquamarine water on the other side. The mountains were covered in Willow and Alder trees, interspersed with carpets of scrubs in their full autumn colours of green, burnt orange and yellow . We had a very quick glimpse of a Beluga whale, but it was one of those quick sightings where you wonder if it was for real.
February 2016 | the muse | 15
THE WONDERS OF GLACIER BAY
On day two, we had the highlight of the cruise as we sailed into Glacier Bay and the mist miraculously lifted on a perfect day, to reveal a wonderland of aquamarine water dotted with ice floes, surrounded by snow capped mountains with waterfalls in the crevasses. It was one of the most beautiful sights that I have ever seen and I wished that I could hold on to the experience. Glacier Bay was a large single glacier of solid ice 200 years ago, known as the Grand Pacific Glacier. It has now retreated by 105 km to leave the largest protected water area park in the world with 20 smaller glaciers in its trail. The Johns Hopkins and Margerie glaciers are at the head of the Tarr inlet and are two of only a few glaciers worldwide that are either stable or advancing. The Johns Hopkins glacier is quite an imposing sight, towering 76m above the water which stretches way above the 10 story cruise liner and another 60m below the water’s surface. We stayed at the glacier for about 30 minutes just listening to the groaning and creaking sounds of this solid mass of ice as it slowly ground its way forward. We were all ecstatic to watch as
a piece of ice broke off with a thunderous crack and splash into the calm water.
THE QUAINT TOWN OF HAINES
The following morning, we docked in Haines. This quaint town with a population under 2 000 survives mainly on its income from tourism. They have to make the best of it over the few months before the weather makes it inhospitable.
SPAWNING SALMON AND GRIZZLY BEARS
On our bus excursion along the river it was fascinating to see the salmon run – the river alive with salmon swimming upstream to spawn. There was great excitement when we spotted our first grizzly bear frolicking in the water, catching fish and then sitting with his legs stretched out forward and eating his catch. We also watched as a mother bear taught her two cubs to fish. They have to eat a huge amount of salmon to fatten up for their winter hibernation. We saw lots of hump back whales, sea lions and otters on our way back. It was the experience of a lifetime for both of us and one that we would do again in a heartbeat. We missed out on the Northern Lights, so we will leave the cruise on the bucket list.

OUT AND ABOUT
Philadelphia
Philadelphia - only half an hour away up the N7 towards Malmsbury is a quaint village worth visiting to capture the feeling of stepping back in time, but still having the comfort of modern day amenities. The Muse featured Philadelphia in May 2013 thanks to writer Regine Lord who expanded on the history of the farming community dating back to 1863. The prominent NG Kerk is still a much loved landmark, close to the familiar favourites - the popular Pepper Tree Art Stable and Coffee shop, Die Malle Meul - a wonderful venue for weddings, with a children's playground and a labyrinth for those wishing for a spiritual journey. There are a variety of gift shops including Magic Minerals, and the Dekor shop. Our recent visit to Philadelphia revealed

some changes to the family of shops and restaurants. Odds Bistro has moved to a large modern building with green lawns and an airconditioned garden bar. A new find was the "Deli Shed" open for the first day and very popular for their freshly baked bread and coffee! Watch this space for their meals - coming soon. A haven for art and artists, Phildaelphia has a few art galleries worth a visit. Just walking through the streets affords one the opportunity of taking some interesting photographs of "the old and the new", including a plethora of interesting rusty objet d'art. When you are next in Philadelphia - see if you can find them!

FOOD FROM THE HEART By Heleen Meyer
Portrait: Neville Lockhart Food shot: Neville Lockhart, courtesy of Pharma Dynamics
Pinelands resident, foodie and author of Food from the Heart, and the new Make five/Maak vyf.
JACKET SWEET POTATOES WITH COTTAGE CHEESE Recipe from Cooking from the heart 3 Serves 6 4 tsp (20 ml) olive or avocado oil ¼ cup (60 ml) fresh lemon juice 2 tbsp (30 ml) water 4 tsp (20 ml) finely grated fresh ginger 1 small chilli, seeded & chopped (optional) 1 clove of garlic, crushed 2 onions, cut into wedges 6-8 (700-900 g) small sweet potatoes, in the skin black pepper to taste ¾ cup (180 ml) plain smooth low-fat cottage cheese handful fresh coriander leaves 1. Preheat the oven to 180 ˚C. 2. Mix oil, lemon juice, water, ginger, chilli and garlic in a large bowl. Add onions and sweet potatoes and toss to coat the veggies. Season with pepper. 3. Place in an oven dish, with all the liquid and seasonings. Roast for 45 min to 1 hour or until the sweet potatoes are soft. 4. Stir onions with the pan juices into the cottage cheese. Cut a deep slit into each sweet potato and fill with 2 tbsp (30 ml) of the mixture. Garnish with fresh coriander. 5. Serve with grilled or roasted fish, chicken or pork and fill your plate with any green veggies, lightly cooked and seasoned with lemon juice and black pepper. A green salad will also be delicious.
A Jacket Required My colleagues and I develop quite a number of recipes for various projects and purposes every year. In my mind they are all exciting and special and yet, some stand out in a different way, or shall I say, on our taste buds. Sometimes it’s the specific ingredients that make it interesting. With other recipes it may be the synergy between ingredients that results in an extra special dish and with others it’s the pure simplicity of the combinations that is the wow factor. These jacket sweet potatoes are one of those latter recipes. We needed to develop something as a healthy alternative to what most would call a ‘white starch’, to enjoy as a side dish. In other words, something that could replace bread, pasta, rice or one of the usual starches on our plates. With the ever stronger growing focus on reducing refined and processed foods to enjoy healthier meals, this is an excellent option to have in your repertoire. I enjoy the challenge of making healthy
food, which is just as flavourful as a sometimes less than healthy counterpart. We used the idea of a baked potato in the skin served with sour cream for these jacket sweet potatoes and added a few twists for extra flavour. A simple oil mixture, seasoned with fresh garlic, ginger, lemon and chilli, flavours the sweet potatoes. These are then roasted with onion wedges in a roasting pan. Once the veggies are cooked, the onions and delicious pan juices are stirred into smooth cottage cheese to serve in large dollops on the sweet potatoes. The caramelised flavour of the roasted onions and sweet potatoes with a bit of zing, is a taste that you would want to enjoy again quite soon. Serve these with your next braai or any meat of your choice. It’s delicious with roasted chicken or pork and just what you need with a fresh line fish over the coals. Add a large green summer salad and you will have a meal fit for a king. Enjoy this summer’s cooking – the healthy way.
Cook up a storm with Make five Heleen’s recipe book Make five/Maak vyf will inspire you to use a variety of everyday ingredients in five delectable and interesting ways. The recipes are easy and versatile with lots of practical tips on how to cook delicious, wholesome food for
your family. To order a signed copy of Make five/Maak vyf or for more information on any of her books, visit www.heleenmeyer. co.za, email her on heleen.m@iafrica.com or like her on Facebook www.facebook. com/HeleenMeyerFood .
