About the Cover: The Clock Tower is one of the 22 landmarks featured in the V&A Historical Tour led by retired author and journalist Willem Steenkamp. Many of the sites are still in use although perhaps not their original function such as the Portswood Prison now being used as the Portswood Hotel and the UCT Business School. THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW TO LEARN No matter how many times you have visited a place, or looked at a familiar object or how long you have worked at your profession there will always be something you had never noticed or known about it. I was reminded of this when we did the Historical Tour of the V&A Waterfront for the Out & About article in this edition. It is a place I have walked through often. As it is also a wonderful place for photography, the amateur photography group I belong to has visited it on many occasions over the years. You would think that having combed every corner of the area many times with a keen photographer's eye, that there would be nothing that had escaped your notice. But no… every time you visit it you find something new, and after the Historical Tour I realised that there was much that I had probably seen but had never looked at with much attention or interest because the reward was not immediately obvious. It took someone with a more detailed knowledge to point it out and tell me the unique story of that particular place before it came alive, leaving me wondering, "why had I never noticed that before?" Thinking about this, it is probably not a failure in observation, but rather a natural 'filter' that only registers what is immediately relevant to what we happen to be doing and thinking at the time. You are not likely to notice an unassuming doorway when your thoughts are about finding a gift for your friend's birthday. Visiting the same place with different actions and thoughts is what triggers different observations, so that may be why everyone has a unique knowledge or impression of the same place. So perhaps, "there is always something new to learn" happens because we just approach the same thing in a different frame of mind at different times of our lives and that is what opens our minds to a new insight or discovery. I hope you enjoy the edition.

BIRDS IN PINELANDS

The House Crow is an introduced species from India and has become a big problem in Pinelands and the Cape Flats. It is smaller than the Pied Crow, and appears all black, but in good light you can see the paler areas on the back of the head and underneath. It is such a problem because it is very skilled at finding the nests of other birds and small flocks of them raid these nests, eating the eggs and chicks. Many of the chicks of other species in our garden in Pinelands were killed by marauding groups of House Crows. In areas along the East African coastline, where they have also invaded, they have decimated the local bird communities. Luckily the City of Cape Town has a successful program to remove them and the numbers have reduced, but please report any sightings to 021 444 2357. Cannons Creek Independent School in Pinelands celebrated the inauguration of its Cultural Centre on their Founders’ Day 11 February 2016. The school’s Marimba Band welcomed special guest Mr Lebogang Montjane, CEO of ISASA; and invited guests Mr Reimar Meilck (ISASA Western Cape representative), Mr and Mrs John Gardener (ISASA Governors), the school’s Trustees, and neighbouring Principals. Mr Montjane and the Founder Principal Mrs Carol Booth and the High School Principal Mr Mike van Haght addressed pupils from Grade 1 to 12. Then Mr Montjane, assisted by Mrs Booth, cut the ceremonial ribbon and the Cultural Centre doors opened to reveal the field and Primary School beyond. Thereafter, Mr Montjane, the Principals and 5:00 PM the Trustees met the Pre-Primary pupils for a tree-planting ceremony outside the Cultural

Centre. The tree, a Natal Mahogany donated by Mr David Booth, will in time provide much needed shade in the courtyard. The school now 19 years old, started with 37 pupils, and has not had a hall until now. Currently there are 400 pupils, and although music was only formally introduced in 2014, there are 162 pupils having private music tuition. The hall, known as the Cultural Centre, has three sound-proofed music teaching rooms, a gallery, a moveable stage and large doors especially constructed for opening onto the field so that events can be held both facing inwards and outwards from it. The hall will be used for assemblies and other cultural events. It was designed by VDMMA Architects who designed the Cape Town International Convention Centre. They also designed the school's Primary School building, inaugurated in 2012.

Vista Nova High School achieved excellent results in the 2015 Matric Exams. It was one of only 17 public schools in the Western Cape to achieve a 100% pass rate consistently for the last five years. 2015 produced the school’s largest cohort of matric students at 28, and six subject distinctions were achieved by students, including Darryn Atkins and Mark Hubbard for Mathematical Literacy, Luzuko Botha for English and our top student, Ayesha Toyer, who achieved 86% for Life Orientation, 90% for English and 92% for Afrikaans! All of this

would not have been attained without the superb team of educators, psychologist, learning support teacher, class assistants and private facilitators who have studiously served the students with patience and love. The matric scribes were invaluable, many of whom are members of the Pinelands Community. MUSE readers are encouraged to- get involved with scribing for the matric candidates and other grades. PINELANDS AND THORNTON SCHOOL ATHLETES DO US PROUD On Thursday 11 February, Pinelands Primary hosted the annual Quadrangular Athletics where Pinelands North, Pinehurst, Thornton and Pinelands Primary competed for athletics honours. It was an exciting event with a number of fantastic performances by athletes from all four schools. Toastmasters International began their first Youth Leadership programme at Sans Souci Girl's High School on the 2nd February, with great enthusiasm and energy. The programme, facilitated by experienced 12:43 PM volunteer Toastmasters, takes up to 20 learners through eight, one and a half hour workshops, that enable participants to develop their communication and leadership skills through practical experience. Participants learn to give effective speeches and impromptu talks, listen and give constructive feedback and learn to run and organize meetings, culminating in a showcase event. They will participate in the Toastmasters inter-school speech competition later in the year and the winner of the Cape Town Youth Leadership programme will represent the area at the Toastmasters National Conference. The Muse loves a good story and were delighted when Joan Squibb of the UK wrote to tell us that Doreen and Lowther Boyes were celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary! This happy couple emigrated to South Africa with two teenage daughters in 1970. Lowther worked in the construction industry - one of his favourite projects is the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch. In 1980 Doreen and Lowther moved to Pinelands - because of its convenience and proximity to "most places". They have three daughters, four grandchildren and one great grandchild (and more on the way). They love Pinewood Village and all the kind people they know there, and advise that it is important to plan early for retirement. Their secret for a long marriage? Congratulations to Mavis and Neville Balfour - married for 60 years and resident in Pinelands for 47 years! Neville recalls their first date - Ivan Hoe starring Robert Taylor at the Scala Cinema. They married at the Methodist Church in Roodebloem Road in Woodstock on 25 February 1956, and moved to Pinelands in 1964 to stay in a scheme house in Rhone, where they lived until they moved to Lawrence Village in 2011. Mavis was good at athletics, played softball for Western Province, and also enjoyed tennis. Neville was a hockey player, then excelled in tennis and now prefers to play bowls. What came first, the chicken or 11:33 AM the egg? Perhaps the question is spurious; in the end the profession deserves to be held in high regard.

The essence of leadership is service, and at its very heart, teaching is about serving young people. One cannot teach without being of service. The complexity of relationship management with hundreds of students every day demands that teachers must constantly look to the best interests of the young people in their care, thus serving them. It is in this service, in this willingness to put others before self, that leadership is shown.

THE RESPONSIBILITY TO BE SENSITIVE

The other aspect of teacher-leadership is role-modeling. Young people today are exposed to countless would-be role models, many of them of dubious moral

fibre and example. The teacher, with her privileged position of power in the classroom has an enormous responsibility to role-model good behaviour. Despite the distractions and persuasive power of the information age, I believe that the teacher remains in a position of great influence… even in the Grade 12 classroom! Influence and leadership are closely allied, and it is up to us as teachers to use our positions with sensitivity and consideration.

TEACHERS AS ROLE MODELS

So the teacher as leader both serves others, and models good behaviour. If our intention in schools is to help to shape young people into adults of good character who understand the value of life-long learning and who are committed to ideals beyond themselves – then as teachers we must model this behaviour. And if our intention is to develop young people who believe in the power of justice and compassion, who have a healthy selfrespect and who can manage themselves in the face of adversity and pressure – then as teachers we must model this behaviour. Many teachers do all of these and more, and they therefore are the unsung leaders in our society.

SOCIETY NEEDS TO CHERISH TEACHERS

Teachers need to be encouraged to continue to hold firmly to this path, to be nurtured and supported emotionally and in material ways, and to be reminded of the precious roles which they play. And this is the task of all of society. 

PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO TOUR TO KNYSNA

The Pinelands High School U19A boys and girls travelled to the Oakhill Open Water Festival in Knysna from 11 – 14 February 2016. The festival takes place over four days in two constructed pools in the Knysna harbour, making for a truly unique experience. There was an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship amongst the teams at the festival, an ethos that is strongly emphasised by the organisers. The Pinelands High boys won all seven of their matches by considerable margins - every outfield player scored at least one goal; and the girls also performed fantastically to dominate all but one of their seven matches. Christopher Timm was voted as the best boys’ goalkeeper of the festival and Winona Autagavaia was the top goal scorer in the girls division. The Pinelands players did Pinelands High School proud with their flawless manners, admirable sportsmanship, fervent spirit and irrepressible charisma. Repair costs can be reduced by servicing your car every 10 000 km, or at least annually, to avoid expensive major repairs. When servicing your vehicle use an RMI approved workshop. The workshop you use should test drive the vehicle before and after the service, allowing an experienced technician to pick up faults and warning signs that the vehicle owner might not be aware of. There are important vehicle warnings signs that must be attended to immediately to prevent serious engine damage. If any warning lights are displayed, or if the temperature gauge climbs rapidly you should contact your workshop immediately. Start-up noises are pre-warnings that something is wrong with the motor. If you know your car well and you feel or hear something different, we recommend that you contact your workshop to be safe and avoid potential further damage. METRO KIDS AFRICA APPEALS FOR EASTER EGGS

James and Janet Senior established Metro Kids Africa (MKA) 11 years ago – a non profit Organisation helping children to create a better future. See Muse article March 2013. At present Metro Kids is working with 6 000 children in the disadvantaged areas of Cape Town – Athlone, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Lower Crossroads and Mannenberg to name a few. Their office is based at B6 Pinelands Business Park (Call 021 531 2653 mornings only). MKA operates programmes for children aged 4 to 12 years old and teaches Christian based life skills and values in a fun interactive way. They also have a teenage leadership programme with 180 teens attending. All programmes are led by young people from the communities where MKA works. At Easter, Metro Kids Africa likes to give each child who attends their programmes, an Easter egg, and would love Muse readers to help. Above all else, it is very important to create a relationship with a workshop and staff that you can trust. The cost of vehicle repairs and maintenance has increased, but if you deal with someone you trust you can rest assured that you are paying a fair price for a job that has been done correctly, avoiding paying over and over for the same problem at a second-rate workshop.

If you are at home and someone rings your doorbell, make sure to let them know that there is someone home. “Crowbar gangs” use this method to ascertain if there is someone home. Put on as many inside and outside lights as possible and answer through the intercom or security gate. Don’t go outside as this could put you in danger.

5. Try to observe if there is a car nearby – can you hear it or see it? Try to get a description. Generally the car used would not attract attention as being out of place in the suburb. There are also usually three or four occupants. 6. Fit anti-lift brackets to your sliding driveway gates. 7. If you have a traditional retirement annuity policy in place, it may make financial sense to transfer for it to a unit trust retirement annuity. However, before doing so, it is imperative that you understand the costs involved in transferring your investment. Our team of legal and financial experts are available to provide you with complimentary advice on your existing policies. This advice will involve a detailed financial analysis of the costs involved in undertaking a Section 14 transfer together with financial projections should you choose to move your funds to a unit trust retirement annuity.

As with anything requiring your signature, it is important to understand what you are committing to when investing in a retirement annuity. Knowing the difference between policy RAs and unit trust RAs can have a significant impact on your retirement savings.

TRADITIONAL POLICY RETIREMENT ANNUITIES

This type of RA involves the investor purchasing a policy with an insurance company. This policy is a contract in which the investor commits to contribute towards the RA until at least age 55. On selling the policy, the broker is paid a sizeable upfront commission based on the value of the premiums the client has contracted to pay. The upfront commission is effectively borrowed from the client’s future investment with interest charged. If the client wishes to prematurely cancel his retirement annuity, or can no longer afford the monthly premiums, he is charged a penalty which is then deducted from his accumulated investments. The amount that he is penalised depends on the length of the time the contract has been in force, the remaining term to maturity and the terms of the contract. Policy RAs are notorious for their distinct lack of transparency which is frustrating for investors who find it difficult to obtain information on investment performance, fees, commissions, and other associated costs such as administration and policy fees.

NEW GENERATION UNIT TRUST RETIREMENT ANNUITIES

Over the past decade, we have witnessed the growth of a new generation of unit trust-based RAs which are investmentlinked. A unit trust RA is not a policy, but rather a unit trust portfolio which is owned by the investor. A unit trust RA is a much more cost-effective and flexible investment structure, generally achieving more favourable investment returns than policy RAs. Investment performance of the unit trust portfolio is tracked and all costs involved are completely transparent. In a unit trust RA, investors enjoy full disclosure of all fees including asset management, advisor and administration fees. As the owner of unit trusts, one has the freedom to choose which funds to invest in, subject to Regulation 28 of the Pension Funds Act

Investors are able to increase or decrease monthly contributions with no fear of penalty, and can make ad hoc lump sum contributions at any time. The costs of investing in a unit trust RA are significantly less than a policy RA, and the difference in cost can have a considerable impact on your accumulated savings in the long term. Investors may elect and switch underlying funds; and the financial advisor on a unit trust RA does not charge upfront commission, but instead earns an annual advice fee which is a negotiated percentage of the underlying investment. Policy RAs have come under heavy criticism by the National Treasury and over the past ten years reforms have ensured that insurers limit termination fees and increase disclosure. Reforms have also made it possible for investors to transfer their policy RAs via Section 14 of the Pension Funds Act to a unit trust RA. Before making a decision to transfer one’s policy RA to a unit trust portfolio, it is advisable to obtain a quote from the current insurer setting out the policy cancellation fees. Then your financial advisor will be able to do a comparative exercise mapping your existing policy (net of penalties) against a unit trust retirement annuity over your investment timeline. A seemingly innocuous difference in annual investment returns can have an enormous effect on your final retirement savings, and transferring to a unit trust portfolio should always be considered. If you’re unsure of how to proceed, bear in mind the words of Kofi Annan who said, “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating”, and seek independent advice. 

Quinton was born at the foot of Table Mountain and enjoyed his early childhood in District Six, until his family was forced to move to the Cape Flats. their interests - creating a balance between parental support and being a "helicopter parent". One of his favourite books is The Road Less Travelled by M. Scott Peck. The author states the most precious gifts we can give our children through consistent and genuine caring is self-disciplined role models, a sense of self-worth and a degree of trust in the safety of their existence.

TRAVEL BROADENS THE MIND.

High-powered businessman, Quinton Mitchell, owns a consulting company, Munro Consulting services leading a group of young professionals. He travels extensively for work and this year alone will visit USA, Kenya and Greece. He and his family have been lucky enough to experience a Mediterranean cruise, a visit to the USA including Disneyworld, Sea World in California and the Rocky mountains in Colorado. He believes that travel in itself is an excellent educator, broadening the mind and exposing one to the rich diversity of the various cultures in the world.

PLACE AND SPACE FOR ALL OF US

Quinton observes that racial tension is still an elephant in the room. We need to face it and try to eliminate it from our social circles and especially in the work place. If we attempt to be fair in everything that we do - we will be one step closer to making all those around us trust and enjoy our integrated heritage. We have to conquer the spirit of prejudice and racism for the good of the country and its future. Our biggest challenge remains to close the

Joy and Quinton Mitchell economic divide that exists amongst many of our country's people. Creating opportunities and uplifting those around us is important and one way to do this is to make education accessible and affordable.

THE ALPHA COURSE

Quinton is instrumental in the Alpha course run at the Pinelands Baptist Church (PBC). Reaching out to those who are asking the bigger questions "Why are we here?", "What's the meaning of Life?" The course has helped people find the deeper spiritual meaning of life and encouraged meaningful relationships with others. Anyone interested is welcome to attend the Alpha Invitational Dinner to be held on 12 April 2016 at 19h00 at the Pinelands Baptist Church, La Gratitude road.

Kirsten and Rowan Haarhoff established the business directory in 2004. Max Schutte managed the Pinelands Directory from 2009 onwards, and he initiated the Muse magazine to fulfil requests from advertisers for a print version of the original "eMuse".

He met the love of his life, Joy, while they were working at Old Mutual and they decided to make their home in the leafy green suburb of Pinelands, enjoying the village atmosphere, "which is close to everything where you can drive your car until you are 90", smiles Quinton.

TRAVELLERS

ARGENTINA Travelling to a foreign country can be exhilarating but, at the same time, rather daunting, especially when one does not speak the local language! My introduction to Argentina was a trip to the local hospital in Carlos Paz (near Cordoba) after a silly fall which resulted in excruciating muscle pain. The hospital looked rather grim from the outside but I was beyond caring at that stage. The waiting room was full; dogs, breastfeeding mothers, crawling toddlers and chattering folk. Luckily a hotel staff member was able to translate as none of the staff spoke any English. Despite the language handicap, I have nothing but praise for the doctors and staff at Villa Paz hospital – they wheeled me in within 5 minutes, took x-rays, gave me a huge injection, a script for antiinflammatory tablets and advised 5 days bed rest!!!

Our next stay was in Villa la Angostura, 82 km north of Bariloche. From the first moment we saw snow-covered peaks towering above enormous lakes, we fell in love with this area of Argentina. The drive between Villa la Angostura and San Martin de los Andes is called the “7 Lakes Drive”. Stunning reflections, crystal clear water, crisp air, good roads and endless photographic opportunities.

HIKING IN RIO BONITO

There are numerous hikes/walks in this area and we enjoyed many of them. Our favourite was the walk along the Rio Bonito as the local dogs seemed to enjoy “new” company. One female kept picking up stones to be thrown and she accompanied us all the way to the lake and back to the

car again. No Spanish required, the actions said it all. With temperatures sometimes at -6 degrees in the morning, it’s ideal hiking country! And the air – oh my word – it’s a dream.

THE OLDEST "BARRIO" OF BUENOS AERIES

Our last week was spent in Buenos Aires at the Moreno Hotel, bordering the San Telmo district. The hotel lifts are the old-fashioned “cage” type, something I remember from way back when! Just do not walk with a camera around your neck in BA, it will be stolen. On our first day in the city, we were caught by the “mustard trick”. These guys pretend that something has been thrown out of an upstairs window and offer to clean you up with very hastily produced tissues. Thankfully, we escaped with sprayed clothes only!

CITY LIFE TO COUNTRY RETREAT

There is much to see in Buenos Aires if you enjoy city life – Puerto Madera, the modern, waterfront, the famous San Telmo Sunday Market, The Japanese and Rose gardens, Recoleta Cemetery, Café Tortoni and my personal best, the Tigre Delta. With only boat access, it’s an idyllic week-end retreat. Traffic in the city is relentless yet drivers are courteous to pedestrians, architecture is a mixture of old, new or very decrepit, hawkers still sell “selfie” sticks, “cambio” dealers abound in Florida Street, and Galerias Pacifico in Retiro is THE mall! country. Córdoba Province is hot, and dry with rather dilapidated buildings. However, the small mountain village of Villa General Belgrano (named after the creator of the Argentine flag Manuel Belgrano), was worth a visit with its many shops and restaurants. Founded by descendants of the “Admiral Graf Spee”, a German battleship that was scuttled off the Uruguayan coast in 1939. With hundreds of beer mugs and chocolates on offer, this is a town after my own heart! The annual Bier fest is held in October each year and preparations were well under way in September already. So if you are looking for a Bier fest with a difference, head to Argentina!

TURNING BACK THE CLOCK AT THE V&A WATERFRONT

he historical tour of the V&A waterfront took us to places on the waterfront that we have walked past many times, but never truly recognised their historical heritage. One of them was the beautiful ivy laden entrance to the doors of the Portswood Tunnel - which we now know was originally built as a cutting through Portswood Ridge so that prisoners could haul stones from the quarry to the area of land being reclaimed for the harbour (quay 5) on the other side of Portswood Ridge. It was given a roof and prepared as an air raid shelter during World War II - and then it was used as an entertainment area. Now it is considered unsafe, and the doors are closed. What else did we find fascinating? The graffiti carved in the high stone walls surrounding the

Breakwater Prison - intricate designs more than 100 years old. The row of solitary confinement cells still stand, accompanied by the infamous treadmill â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a contraption for "prisoner punishment and penance". The Clock Tower was the original harbour masters office and the Time Ball Tower was used as a navigational aid for passing ships. There is a vantage point here where one can observe the noon day gun being fired on Signal Hill. Most interesting too is the Robinson Dry Dock built in 1882 and still in use today. It was also used for swimming galas - a sight beautifully illustrated on information boards for those doing the self guided history walk. Our Historical Tour was conducted by retired author and journalist Willem Steenkamp. His interesting stories about the Cape's past are entertainingly

illustrated with his quirky sense of humour. Tours start at the Chavonnes Museum - a place of historical significance in itself, at 11am and 2pm and last for 2 hours. Don't miss The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Chavonnes Battery Museum open until 15th April 2106. WPBTS TAKING STEPS TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF ZIKA VIRUS THROUGH BLOOD TRANSFUSION The WP Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) has adjusted its donor acceptance criteria in an effort to ensure that no blood transfusion recipients will be exposed to the Zika virus. The Zika virus infection is spread through mosquito bites and is mild in most cases, with its most common symptoms being a fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis (pink eye). However, the Blood Services are particularly concerned regarding the association between Zika infection during pregnancy and microcephaly (with delayed neurological development), as well as an association between Zika infection and Guillain-Barre Syndrome, which is a temporary but serious disorder causing

paralysis. Up to 80% of people infected with the Zika virus may have no symptoms at all. “As Zika virus infection can be transmitted via blood transfusion, the Service asks that blood donors who travelled to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central or South America do not donate blood within 28 days of returning to the Western Cape”, says Marlize van der Merwe, WPBTS Spokesperson. “The safety of our blood donors and recipients are of utmost importance to the Service and the deferral has been put in place for that exact reason.” In general, travelling to tropical areas puts people at risk of getting infections not usually found in South Africa. If donors visited the aforementioned affected areas and experience the following symptoms within the next 14 days after donation, they are requested to notify WPBTS immediately at 021 507 6320 or 021 507 6329:

• A fever of more than 37.8oC • Muscle and/or joint aches or weakness • Eye pain, including conjunctivitis (pink eye) • A rash As this restriction is expected to reduce the number of eligible blood donors, those who are healthy and are not affected by this post-travel waiting period, are encouraged to donate blood. The basic donor acceptance criteria are that one is at least 16 years of age, weighs more than 50 kg, is in good general health, and lives a safe lifestyle. It is also important for donors to eat a meal three to four hours before donating blood and increase their fluid intake on the day of donation.
