WELCOME About the cover: Dr Jacques Scherman Specialist Cardiothoracic Surgeon at The Chris Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University of Cape Town, Groote Schuur and Associated Academic Hospitals successfully completed an aortic valve replacement using keyhole surgery in March this year. It is the first time this technique has been used in South Africa to replace an aortic valve. He heads the teaching unit aiming to make this less invasive surgery available all over South Africa. See the story pages 8 & 9.

TRAVELS ON THE EDGE
Reading Gavin van Haght’s Portraits of India travelogue on page 14 fills me with a mixture of envy and trepidation! On the one hand it makes me want to also take in such a rich experience, but the price (paid in discomfort and difficulty) seems quite daunting. However, what is is comfortable and easy is usually the most quickly forgotten. The memories that linger strongest are those experienced 'out on the streets' where strange sights and foods and unfamiliar aromas flood the senses. Conversations with locals, sometimes in scraps of each other's language and usually with copious hand gestures are transformed into events. The simple act of asking for directions or negotiating a price somehow becomes etched in the mind when conducted with these mutual handicaps. The memories collected from travel like this, with an element of being "a stranger in a strange land", stay with one for a lifetime. Decades later, particular moments spring to mind as clearly as a photograph, the joy and surprise of a unique taste come flooding back, a perfect view shared with someone close to you evokes the emotion of the occasion… Yes, travel does cost, in money and effort, but it has always turned out to be a good investment. Now, where is my camera and suitcase? Enjoy the issue!
Max Schutte Pinelands Resident Mr Vernon Meise brought us this guava "siamese twin" from a tree in his garden. Nursery manager Rashieda, from Stodels comments that this is called fasciation or cresting. It has a variety of causes ranging from genetic, to environmental causes. The excessive growth can be found in the stem, the fruit and the flowers. The fruit is safe to eat!

CAPE SKINK
Sunny winter days are a good time to watch Cape Skinks basking on the bricks, always ready to run under the nearest bushes at the smallest sign of movement. These long, thick-bodied lizards eat insects such as grasshoppers, and, like chameleons, are a sign of a healthy garden. Cape Skinks live on the ground among branches, and give birth to live young. They are able to shed their tail when attacked, but this doesn’t help against cats which normally kill all of these slow-moving lizards that they find. Text and photo by Dr Callan Cohen, research associate at the UCT FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, bird book author and director of Birding Africa tours see: www.birdingafrica. com. Callan is also a dedicated natural historian and has a passion for all things natural, including flora and trees, frogs, reptiles, butterflies, dragonflies and mammals.

Cannons Creek Independent School is proud of the four girls Manisha Desai, Charlotte Wolfson, Mercedes March and Alexanda Arendse, who represented North Primary Schools Zone at the U13 Districts Softball Tournament held in Vredenburg in April. Mercedes March and Alexanda Arendse were selected for the WP Squad for training and selection of the final team for the Inter Provincial Softball Tournament in December. Alexa: "9 Teams, 8 Games, 2 Days, 1 Goal - to become the Girls U13 Western Cape Schools Softball Champions. Well done to our team for pulling off 6 out of 8 hard fought wins - to be awarded 2nd Place for the tournament. It was an amazing experience to be on KFM 94.5 Breakfast Show. They asked me how I felt about being the youngest in the WP squad; I said I was just shocked. I was also really surprised when I was nominated the 2nd best batter at the Inter-District Tournament. I started playing T-Ball in grade 1 and went up to softball in grade 3". Mercedes: "Being on radio was an amazing experience. I met the breakfast crew and we took lots of pictures. I was nervous at first but then when we went into the studio I was fine. I started playing softball in grade 2. Now I play pitcher and first base."

If your car is not road worthy, the chance of a road accident increases considerably. Also, if you are involved in an accident, your insurance company will not pay out for the damages. To ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy, Greenside Total will check your vehicle over for just R250 to make sure that it is road worthy compliant. We will then also be able to advise you should we find anything that needs attention and give you a quote for it.
WINTER HAS ARRIVED! It is time to have your wipers and tyres checked or replaced. Be aware of your wipers moving slower than normal which might be due to your wiper mechanism seizing. If attended to in time, the mechanism can be lubricated before any costly replacement has to happen. Make sure that your tyres are checked for tread thickness and condition. It is a great idea to keep a tin of puncture seal in your vehicle for an emergency tyre repair.

CHARLOTTE WOLFSON TAKES FIRST PLACE IN THE SUB-JUNIOR GIRLS AT WP DHI ROUND 3 AT CASCADES MANOR - PAARL
PROPERTIES
Thinking of selling or WE DO IT renting your property? ALL THE TIME! SALES AGENTS
In the May edition of the Muse we reported on the brave Charlotte Wolfson who keeps up with her father and brothers in the challenges of downhill mountain bike racing. Well, we have more to tell as Charlotte progressed from the African Continental Championships in Lesotho, to the Cape Town WP DHI Round 3 at Cascades Manor, Paarl on 10 April. At the beginning of this year Charlotte struggled to get down this track, but as Benjamin (Charlotte's brother) said “if we can do Lesotho, Charlotte, we can do anything!” The track was dry and in great shape from all Eckhardt Kühn’s (the trail builder) hard work over the past year. In the seeding run, Charlotte was able to stitch together all their sectioning during practice into 1 seamless run, over sections she has named “Slip & Slide” and “Hansel & Gretel” that took her over rocks and roots down a steep slope, and over a series of wooden drops. Charlotte was 1st in Sub-Junior Girls and can be proud of getting herself down a tough track that she didn’t like earlier this year. Another SA Nationals race held at Cascades Manor Paarl on 1st May saw Charlotte take 3rd place with her best timed run down this track. She can be very proud of her achievements this year (with very solid results) and it shows how riding with the older DH riders and her brothers, has helped her. The Muse apologises for getting the spelling of Charlotte's surname incorrect in the May edition. This talented lady with a love for the colour orange features in many of the events reported in the Muse - not only does she race the downhill tracks, but she entertains with fast and furious marimba playing, see the cultural event page 16, and is also one of the Cannons Creek softball players that took part in the U13 Districts Softball Tournament held in Vredenburg.

PINELANDER Another first at Groote Schuur Hospital! On 29 March 2016, Pinelander and cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr Jacques Scherman, successfully completed an aortic valve replacement using keyhole surgery. Other cardiac surgical repairs have been done using keyhole surgery, but this is the first time in South Africa that this technique, requiring precision skills, has been used to replace an aortic valve. A brief tour of the recovery wards of the Chris Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Groote Schuur Hospital gives us a glimpse of the world where Jacques Scherman is fulfilling his childhood ambition - not only to be a cardiothoracic surgeon, but to give his patients the best treatment possible, with shorter recovery times - and to share his experiences through teaching.
REVOLUTIONARY HEART SURGERY
INTENSIVE TRAINING IN ZURICH
While speaking to Dr Jacques Scherman between a scheduled morning surgery and an afternoon emergency bypass surgery, I was introduced to two patients recovering from the revolutionary keyhole procedure to replace diseased or damaged aortic valves. The recovery of these patients is amazingly quick - they are up and out of bed within a day. The only evidence of the surgery is a small 6cm dressing on the patient’s chest where the precision instruments and a miniature camera are passed between the rib bones and into the heart. This compared to the conventional method used up to now, where the breastbone is cut to facilitate open heart surgery. How did the patients feel after their keyhole surgery?
Dr Jacques Scherman, senior specialist at the Chris Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Groote Schuur Hospital, spent two years training at the University Hospital of Zurich in Switzerland where keyhole surgery for heart valve conditions was pioneered and standardized to become part of routine clinical practice. Through collaboration with the University Hospital of Zurich, a Swiss surgeon visited Groote Schuur Hospital instructing in the technique in 2013 and the surgical team has now completed more than 100 keyhole surgeries for different heart valve conditions, culminating in the first aortic valve replacement done at Groote Schuur Hospital by Dr Scherman in March this year.
"Wonderful! Thank you doctor - I can breathe again".
The first patient to benefit from this procedure was Boniswa Simon, who
www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za
KEYHOLE REPLACES OPEN-HEART SURGERY
had a leaking aortic valve that caused breathing problems and heart failure. In the developing world, up to two-thirds of heart valve conditions are still caused by rheumatic heart valve disease. The procedure involves stopping the heart and connecting the patient to a heartlung bypass machine, while the surgeon uses a video screen to visualise the work being done with the tiny equipment passed through a tube into the patient’s heart. Jacques explains the pressure on the surgeon at this time to work quickly, because the heart can only survive for a limited amount of time without being properly oxygenated.
INFLUENCE OF PROF CHRIS BARNARD Passionate about his work, Jacques describes how his surgical journey began at the age of six when he saw a program about Dr Chris Barnard. From that moment

He completed his medical degree at the University of Pretoria, his general surgical training at 2 Military Hospital and specialist training at the University of Cape Town. He and his wife Tania and two children Danielle and Jean-Pierre, moved to Pinelands in 2005. He finds it a convenient suburb, "central, 20 minutes from anywhere and close to the hospital in case of an emergency". He loves to unwind doing deep sea diving or going to the gym; and the family enjoys trips up the west coast to Paternoster.
TEACHING THE SKILLS TO THE REST OF SOUTH AFRICA
The biggest challenge, says Jacques, is the skills shortage in the field of keyhole surgery, and to that end, the Chris Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery has established a program to teach the technique to both the private and public sector surgeons. The training will also be expanded to surgeons in other disciplines, providing a service that is ultimately more cost effective than bringing experts in from outside South Africa. Dr Scherman heads this program, and the first University based transcatheter aortic valve insertion (TAVI) program in the country. Research into technologies for cheaper and effective prosthetic heart valves is also in his portfolio.

COMMUNITY NEWS
PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOL PAIR WIN GOLD Maths lovers and GOLD winners (from left to right), Rafeeq Jaffer and Muhammed Zuhayr Khan, are pictured here with Ms Pampallis, one of the excellent and inspiring PHS Mathematics teachers. On Thursday 7 April, 73 students from PHS took part in the annual UCT Mathematics Competition. Five individuals and five pairs in each grade category were entered. The UCT Mathematics Competition is one of the biggest inter-school maths competitions in the country, with over 7 000 competitors. With numbers so vast, it is a mark of excellence to be ranked among the top achievers - and this is just what two of our Grade 10s have done! Rafeeq Jaffer and
Muhammed Zuhayr Khan participated in the pairs section of the competition, and received a Gold Award for coming joint second in their grade. This fantastic result is testament to their ability to think creatively about unfamiliar problems and their strong teamwork. In addition to this, 19 individuals (out of 23) and 7 pairs (out of 25) received merit awards, which means they ranked in the top 200 in their respective categories.
CONGRATULATIONS TO PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOLS’ GRADE 8 MEMBERS OF THE RCL Congratulations are due to Pinelands High Schools’ Grade 8 members of the Representative Council of Learners for 2016. They are from left to right: Aziem Mowzer, Caylee Coetzee and Benjamin Stannard. These students were voted for by their grade and will strive during their year of office to represent the best interests of all Grade 8s in the governance of the school.

PLANNING FOR EVERY EVENTUALITY
WHAT IF?
Through our fee-based planning process, we provide legal, tax and financial advice on:
By Sue Torr
Director at Crue Invest
Planning for foreseeable life events: Tax advice Retirement planning (pension funds, provident
"I don’t need a financial plan. I have policies in place." This is a common, misguided, response by many when probed on the issue of financial planning. Ironically, the existence of these so-called policies may be the very reason a financial plan is needed. Firstly a well-drafted financial plan should be focused on advice as opposed to products. Secondly, a sound financial plan should aim to consolidate all policies and investments into a stream-lined solution that reduces fees payable by the client whilst increasing the value to the client. Lastly, a financial plan should be a personalised blueprint that addresses all possible foreseeable and unforeseeable events that a client may face in their life-time. Our formula for holistic planning is based on four broad areas.
Foreseeable life events
What can you reasonably expect to happen during your life-time and how can you plan for each eventuality? This area of the plan isolates those events that can reasonably be expected to happen during one's lifetime. Most people will suffer minor health ailments and may be hospitalised for general, non-life threatening procedures. The natural stopgaps for these anticipated events is to put appropriate medical aid and gap cover in place, whilst at the same time taking into account familial history, demographics and affordability. Other events including marriage, property purchase, children’s education and travel, necessitate short-tomedium term investment advice. Tax is an inevitable part of earning an income, and tax planning should be a regular line-item in one’s annual financial review. A workable retirement plan should be drafted with expert advice from a retirement expert.
Unforeseeable life events
What are the events that can blind-side your plans, and how can you protect yourself? This area of the financial plan is the catch-net for life’s curve balls. Careful consideration is given to possible eventualities such as temporary incapacity (such as a hairdresser suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome) or permanent disability (such as a surgeon with debilitating arthritis in his hands). Mental illness such as chronic depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder can

funds, retirement annuities, living annuities)
Discretionary investing Short-to-medium term savings (property, education, travel)
have detrimental effects on one’s potential to earn an income, so mechanisms should be put in place to protect one’s income should earning potential be compromised in any way.
Foreseeable death (old age)
How do we plan for the fact that you may live to 100 and what will your legacy be? One of the benefits of living a long and healthy life is being able to timeously plan your last wishes and carefully craft one’s legacy. Together with the drafting of a Last Will & Testament, this area of financial planning involves calculating estate duties and estate costs, as well as bequeathing one’s assets accordingly. The luxury of time also affords one the opportunity to put funeral and burial arrangements in place so that your loved ones are not left questioning your wishes after your death. With some careful thought and sound financial planning, the winding up of a deceased estate need not be the cause of any administrative or financial burden for your loved ones. The gift of time allows one to craft one’s own timeless legacy.
Budgeting Medical aid and gap cover Planning for unforeseeable life events: Income protection if temporarily incapacitated Income protection if permanently disabled Capital disability insurance Emergency funding Severe illness and chronic disease cover Planning for foreseeable death (old age): Drafting of a Last Will and Testament Preparing a Letter of Wishes Nominating executors and trustees Burial and funeral arrangements Estate structuring and planning Leaving your legacy Planning for unforeseeable death (untimely death): Life cover The drafting of a Living Will Set up of testamentary trusts for minor children Appointing guardians for minor children Putting business succession planning in place Business assurance and key person needs
CRUE’S TEAM OF PROFESSIONALS
Unforeseeable death (untimely death)
What happens if you were to die an untimely death and how can you prepare for such an eventuality? Fear-based sales of life insurance policies often result in many people being hopelessly over-insured in the event of an untimely death, and yet completely underfunded for a long and would-be happy retirement. Planning financially for death is an exact science. Understanding what one’s spouse and children would need financially in the event of your death is a budgeting exercise that is then capitalised into a lump sum amount. The drafting of a Living Will can provide invaluable guidance in the event that artificial life support is being used to sustain your life. At the end of the day, financial planning is less about money and more about being the intentional author of your own future. Our advice is to let your financial plan be the first chapter in the book of success.

It is sad to think that when we get the opportunity to travel, we often walk away with just a few keepsakes and occasionally a sun tan. My wife Kirsty, and I have made it our mission over the past few years to get out of our comfort zones and submerge ourselves into as many different cultures as our savings will allow. The Randrollercoaster doesn't make it easy, but we have made do, often putting off other responsible adult duties (such as having children) in the process. The most recent of these trips has been to India. Dirty, crowded and often uncomfortable. These were the adjectives that we had been given from others during our pre-holiday research and to be fair to those people I wouldn’t totally disagree. When travelling through a country with a population upwards of 1.2 billion it is inevitable that you are going to encounter those negative by-products of over population. What we encountered, however, was so much more. Our trip started in Mumbai (I still remember how the humidity hit me when stepping off the plane for the first time) and continued through Delhi, Agra, Varanasi and the southern, mountainous region of Munnar. We relaxed on a houseboat in Kerala - one if the most memorable 24 hours of my life as we made our way along the southern Indian backwaters, sipping on masala chai, enjoying the beautiful landscape; and we pushed our way through crowds of people

PRINCIPAL'S ARTICLE
SUCCESS AND SIGNIFICANCE
AFTER SCHOOL By Mike van Haght Principal Cannons Creek Independent High School
MATRIC SUCCESS BUT UNIVERSITY FAILURE
At the end of every year we are flooded with reports and newspaper articles about how many of our matriculants have achieved excellent results and are headed for success and tertiary education. Yet one year later, these same newspapers say nothing about the thousands of first year students who drop out of university, disillusioned and having wasted their time and parents’ hard earned money.
AN "A" DOES NOT GUARANTEE SUCCESS.
Stellenbosch University recently released statistics showing that only 12% of matriculants who achieve an “A” aggregate at the end of matric, pass; and only 27% of matriculants who score an “A” in six or more subjects complete their degree on time. Why is it that matric results alone are not an accurate predictor of tertiary success?
life for the pupil. Some pupils can achieve excellent school results by cramming in their final year. They are unlikely to succeed at university with the same approach. Unless they have learnt how to apply themselves academically from day one, failure at tertiary level is a very real possibility. • CONFIDENCE So many pupils head off to university believing, deep down, that they will probably drop out. Why are we surprised at this attitude? After all, many of their friends a year or so ahead of them also dropped out.
those less fortunate than ourselves have to contend with, that we are able to put our own minor challenges into perspective. Many students who have not been exposed to the realities of life are often the ones who are unlikely to stand up to the rigours of tertiary study. It is not surprising that worldwide, the top universities now use community involvement as a significant indicator of likely success. Success on its own can be a dangerous thing. We live in a world where corruption and self-enrichment is often the norm and expectation. Success without empathy or compassion is not what this world, and in particular, our country, needs.
Firstly, there can be no denying that school leaving results are of paramount importance. Besides ensuring entrance into a reputable tertiary institution, this also plays an important part in preparing for academic success after school.
The sad reality is that not all schools build confidence. For many pupils, their high school experience is one where a few superstars achieved all the glory, academically or in the extracurricular arena. The rest were the envious hangerson, never believing in themselves, only wishing they could also be a superstar. As difficult as it might be, every school should endeavour to encourage every pupil to get involved as widely as possible, to take on real responsibility, to step out of their comfort zones and in doing so, discover what they are good at. So many people go through life never discovering their talents, and hence, never giving themselves the chance to shine.
Every school should be focussed on ensuring that every one of its pupils achieves the best possible results he or she is capable of. This should be the focus of every pupil, every parent and every teacher in the school, not just the matriculants. It needs to be the school culture, the norm, an expectation. The reason it should not just be a “matric thing” is that hard work, organisation, goal setting and perseverance need to become a way of
This confidence, (not arrogance), is an essential element in success after school.
The matriculants of today are the leaders of tomorrow. We need leaders who will not only be successful in their own right but be significant in the impact they make in this world. The desire to “give back” and live an altruistic, meaningful life of significance generally needs to be nurtured and developed. While this certainly starts at home, school plays a huge role in inculcating a sense of fairness and Ubuntu. A good school will provide adequate opportunities and encourage their pupils to give back to the less fortunate. Every school can run an outreach programme. No school is too poor or under-resourced to do so. There is always someone needier than you; someone you can help in some way or another.
• COMPASSION AND SIGNIFICANCE Life is not a bed of roses. We all have to deal with disappointments, setbacks and sometimes failure. People who have always been sheltered from such realities often struggle when real life strikes. Young people who have only had to focus on their own needs sometimes have a skewed opinion of life. It is only when we see what
Success after school is not luck of the draw. It starts the day we are born. While home plays a vital role in this regard, schools are undeniably a major contributor to post school success or failure. A school that works for one child will not necessarily work for another. Choose a school that works for your child.
While there are a myriad of factors which all contribute towards an excellent school education and post school success, three in particular stand out: •
ACHIEVE THE BEST POSSIBLE SCHOOL LEAVING RESULTS YOU CAN

COMMUNITY EVENT
CANNONS CREEK CULTURAL EVENING The Muse enjoyed an evening of music and drama entertainment at the new Cannons Creek Hall on Wednesday 18 May 2016. Accomplished musicians from the senior school had the audience foot tapping through Abba's Mamma Mia, Kyle's Song, Man in the Mirror (Michael Jackson), and the show ended with the full cast on stage as the singers rounded off with Hands of Man (Chris de Burgh). More than a third of the school took part in the Cultural Showcase which brimmed with talent. Well done to the drama artists who raised plenty of laughs - with their true to life expressions of daily scenarios - presented with such passion. Mrs Hedenskog (Head of Culture and Music) and Mrs Herbig (Head of Drama) were congratulated and thanked for all their hard work and dedication in putting together a polished show with minimal interruption to teaching time.

OUT AND ABOUT
Rusty Gate Farm A wonderful place to put on your weekend getaway list, suitable for young and old, summer and winter. High in the mountains between Villiersdorp and Greyton is a beautiful farm offering accommodation in cottages on the ridge overlooking Eland's Kloof. There are numerous farm walks to enjoy in the misty early mornings and a small dam in which to cool off in summer. Children and the adventurous will enjoy the dam's "foofie slide". The plethora of proteas and ericas along the mountainside bring plenty of birds. Our cottage had three fireplaces! One for making a delicious braai, one in the living area, and another in the bedroom - winter bliss. The farm also has a large venue for weddings; a couple of Springbok and some Emu. FOOD FROM THE HEART By Heleen Meyer Pinelands resident, foodie and author of Food from the Heart, and the new Make five/Maak vyf.
QUICK THAI CURRY WITH CHICKEN 1 x 400 ml tin coconut milk 25-30 ml red Thai curry paste (or more to your preference) 400-500 g chicken breast fillets, sliced into strips 250 g brown or portabellini mushrooms, sliced 100 g green beans, halved lengthwise salt and pepper to taste handful each fresh basil and coriander leaves 1. Heat half of the coconut milk with the curry paste over a medium heat in a large frying pan until the coconut milk begins to simmer. Simmer for 5-10 minutes without a lid, until thickened slightly. Stir through once or twice. 2. Add the remaining coconut milk and heat until it simmers again. Add chicken, cover with a lid and gently simmer for 5 minutes or until almost tender, but not completely cooked. 3. Stir in the mushrooms and simmer with a lid for another 5 minutes. Add the green beans and simmer gently for another 2-3 minutes or until the chicken is just cooked - but not dry, and the beans are still bright green. 4. Season to taste and serve with fresh herbs and basmati rice.

Fight the cold with curry The warmth from a bowl of comforting winter food may just be what you feel like for supper. There are many options, but this quick curry is something you can whip up in less than no time. The combination of coconut milk and a Thai curry paste is always good, and to that you can add a long list of fresh ingredients. All the ingredients are gently simmered in the sauce, to prevent overcooking and to combine the flavours. In this version I used chicken, mushrooms and green veggies, but have made a vegetarian version before, by combining different types of mushrooms instead. Cubes of brinjal or sweet potato simmered in the sauce is heavenly and perfect with chicken; or add chickpeas for another vegetarian twist. Other green veggies like spinach leaves
or broccoli and even cauliflower will be delicious, so be creative. Thai curry paste comes in three colours and strengths – green, red and yellow. Green is considered to be the hottest of the three, with yellow the mildest. That may however vary depending on the way it was (home)made, the amount of chillies used, or the specific brand you bought. I prefer red curry paste for this recipe, as it is really versatile. Serve the curry on brown basmati rice with a good handful of fresh coriander leaves and some fresh basil. These herbs bring out the best flavours of the curry paste. You could serve the curry on egg noodles, or more like a soup, without the rice – whichever way, enjoy it in a bowl and have a spoon handy for all the last bits of sauce.
