The Editor: Max Schutte
WHAT'S IN A NAME? QUITE A LOT REALLY. What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet… So, goes the famous line by William Shakespeare in his play Romeo and Juliet where Juliet suggests that they deny their family names so that the "star-crossed lovers" from the feuding Capulet and Montague families could be together. The quote is used nowadays to say that a 'fancy' brand name does not make the product any better than the next one. There is some truth and some fallacy to this assertion. Marketers know that a product with an expensive sounding name, or a name on which a vast PR budget has been lavished will command a selling price much higher than the real quality of that product. Some brands may indeed be better quality than the "no-name" option, but the price premium is set by the perception of quality, rather than actual quality. Going back to the true intention of the quote though, when a name applies to a person, there is usually pride and emotion bound to it. Our names carry our identity, our heritage, our achievements and the reputation we have built up through life. That is probably why we are a little sensitive about being correctly addressed. It seems that the wrong name does not smell as sweet to us after all. Of course, pronunciation of names is a minefield, especially between different cultures. With my own surname being quite challenging outside the Afrikaans culture, I am quite forgiving and used to responding to a wide range of variations on it. I hope that the many people I may unknowingly offend when I mispeak their name will forgive me in return. Perhaps, the greater social evil is calling someone by the wrong name, or worse still, failing to remember their name all. We knew one gentlleman who rather neatly avoided this tricky social trap by simply calling everyone of his acquaintance "Blue". His accent and friendly disposition allowed him to get away with not remembering anyone's name without offence! Enjoy the issue!

CAPE SPARROW
Cape Sparrows are cheerful Pinelands residents and feed mainly on seeds. They construct giant, messy nests, where they sleep each night and raise their young, and which they often place in thorny trees. The male has a black face with a white ”C” around the ear, while the female is more grey. The male House Sparrow is similar but doesn’t have a black face but rather a black “bib” on his chest. Text and photo by Dr Callan Cohen, research associate at the UCT FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, bird book author and director of Birding Africa tours see: www.birdingafrica.com. Callan is also a dedicated natural historian and has a passion for all things natural, including flora and trees, frogs, reptiles, butterflies, dragonflies and mammals.

Positively Pinelands NO ROOM FOR SPECULATION IN A TIGHT MARKET
So what lessons can be learnt?
Choose one agency that you believe you can trust and work with as a team and do not test the market with price. If you get the numbers right, your home should sell within the time frames indicated and at close to the asking price.
If you are considering selling, letting or buying, give us a call.

In Pinelands the number of homes that have reduced in price is clearly visible on the Property24 and Private Property website and the number of homes being advertised has increased by roughly 20% in the past month. In Pinelands, 43 properties are currently being advertised (excluding retirement villages) and the average number that sell every month is in the region of 15. You will also note that the number of properties being advertised by more than one agent has increased and we sense that owners are thinking that if one agent can’t get me my price, maybe another will.
SOLD SOLD
There is no doubt that Pinelands and Thornton are becoming more popular due to affordability as a result of the economy slowing and prices in the traditional Southern Suburbs stretching buyers’ pockets … but we need to remain vigilant and not price our homes out of reach of prospective buyers looking to settle in our beautiful suburb.

In fact, if you look at the properties sold, you will note that, barring one or two exceptions, they are usually properties entrusted to a single agent under an exclusive mandate and correctly priced. The reality is that where more than one agent advertises a property, it seems to give an indication that the property is incorrectly priced and buyers are picking up on this.

Generally, if the property is correctly priced, you should achieve about 94% of the asking price. The average time that it takes to sell has increased from about 28 days to 34 days and the longer it takes to sell, the greater the difference between selling and asking prices. Let us consider a few examples:

COMMUNITY MAKES A DIFFERENCE AFTER FIRE AT CROSSROADS On 30 May, a fire broke out in the Crossroads area and 6 families lost their homes and all their worldly possessions. Members of the Pinelands community quickly came to the aid of the victims of this fire. Lerato's Hope, Pinelands Baptist Church, Cannons Creek Independent School, Pinelands North
Primary School and Pinehurst Primary School all called on their respective communities to get involved and managed to get these families back on their feet within a week. It is a wonderful example of what a close knit community like Pinelands can do to reach out to others in need.

On Saturday 11 June, a group of 90 Pinehurst Primary School children, parents and staff spent a fun morning at Koeberg Primary School in Maitland brightening up the playground with a lots of paint and care. In the words of a staff member, Mrs Berndt, “It was an amazing few hours and
the whole atmosphere spoke of fun, work and commitment.” It is part of an on-going effort on the part of Pinehurst to give the children the opportunity to learn to give back to society. The paint was sponsored by Mica and the colourful table tops by Boock Signs.

Not using sunscreen on your face since you’re not spending much time outdoors? Think again! Skin aging UVA rays are almost the 11:31 AM same summer and winter and can penetrate through clouds and windows in your home, car or office. Sunscreen should be applied to your skin every single day of the year, and it is the best anti-aging product you will ever use. A good SPF15 with antioxidants will give you all the protection you need.
LICKING YOUR LIPS & AVOIDING LIP BALM
Your lips don’t have oil glands so they cant help themselves! Licking them may provide temporary moisture and relief but did you know that this leaves them drier? When your lips are moist on the surface from your saliva, they attract moisture from deep within that evaporates into the dry air. Adding to the lip dryness are digestive enzymes in saliva that irritate the skin causing the corners to crack. Provide a protective barrier by applying a well formulated, conditioning lip balm throughout the day. To exfoliate dryness, mix a little sugar into some olive oil to create a smoothing lip treatment.

transepidermal water loss. Vitamin A can help your skin normalise. Use it topically and as a supplement, but make sure you get the correct advice. Book a consultation with your skin care therapist.
NOT ADJUSTING YOUR SKIN CARE ROUTINE
Your skin is constantly changing, especially when the temperature drops. Ensure that you are using the right products. This might include switching from a foaming face wash to a creamier cleanser. You can also add a serum underneath your moisturiser to give your skin a boost of much needed hydration. The key is to really listen to your skin, and change your routine if it isn't working. Consult a trusted skin care professional to properly address your skin type and its needs.
TURNING UP THE HEAT
A hot shower may help wake you up in the morning, but it could be harming your skin. Extra hot water strips away natural oils, so opt for a lower temperature. Air conditioners and sitting on top of the heater or fireplace will also dry out your skin. And then of course, there are those endless cups of coffee! Caffeine is extremely dehydrating, so rather opt for rooibos or herbal tea. Consider controlling the humidity in your home with a humidifier. A recent study showed that a virus is 32% less likely to survive when relative humidity is between 40% and 60%. A home in the winter can drop to a 15% humidity level, but a humidifier can boost this up significantly. Make these adjustments and you are sure to have soft, smooth skin all winter long. BEATING THE BLUES DEPRESSION IS COMMON
The World Health Organization currently ranks depression as one of the top three disabling conditions globally. For South Africans, the chance of suffering from a major depressive episode in one’s lifetime is more likely than developing diabetes, and women are at almost twice the risk of developing depression than men.
SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR
The core symptoms of depression are feeling sad, low or hopeless, and experiencing a loss of interest or pleasure in activities one usually enjoys. Other common symptoms include insomnia, fatigue, a decrease or increase in appetite and weight, poor concentration, lack of libido, social withdrawal, body aches or pains, irritability and thoughts of death or dying. These symptoms continue for at least two weeks.
SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD)
Mild depression (fewer symptoms that are also less debilitating) that continues for more than two years is known as dysthymia, and experiencing symptoms of depression predominately in the winter months is called seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Dysthymia, SAD and postnatal depression are all treated similarly to major depression.
RISKS OF UNTREATED DEPRESSION
Depression may lift after 6-12 months without any medical treatment. However, the risks of living with untreated depression include suicide, difficulties in relationships and work, and possibly turning to alcohol or drugs (alcohol abuse can also cause depression). The tendency is to withdraw

By Julian Cameron Head at St George's Grammar School. Few would argue that our country faces a crisis of leadership. We read daily of situations where allegations are raised of corruption, questionable tender processes, self-enrichment, poor service delivery and poor decision-making on the part of leaders. With local government elections few weeks away and as Youth month 9:32aAM and the commemorations of the events of 16 June 1976 fade into history, I’ve been wondering whether we as schools and parents are doing enough to develop principled young people to lead us into the future. Are we providing our adolescents and younger pupils with appropriate decision-making skills for the fast changing world which they face? The purpose of this brief reflection is to provide a few thoughts on this and to suggest a few strategies that may be helpful to parents and teachers. Certainly, decision making is dealt with in the Life Orientation curriculum and models are presented to pupils which propose four or five steps and are applied to decisions such as choosing to abstain from alcohol or drugs, or choosing one’s subjects for the final three years of school. My assessment is that such curriculum content is limited in depth and could be better. As parents and teachers we would be doing our young a service if we adopted some of the following strategies:

our children into our decision making processes: when faced with a request or suggestion we share our decision-making process rather than providing an immediate response. For example, we may frame our thoughts by saying: “On the basis of facts and evidence I believe, …., but when I listen to my heart I’m wondering if …. may be a better response. Let me think about it a little more.” This infers that important decisions are seldom clear cut, have rational and emotional components and implications and need time to be well discerned. Spell out our values and priorities: it is often helpful to be explicit in naming our values and principles when talking through
or about our decisions. A response such as “I’ve considered doing X, but that would conflict with my value of being consistent (or transparent, or … as the case may be), so maybe I need to look at a few other options before I decide” demonstrates clearly that I use my values in making decisions. This may be counter-cultural in an age where instant gratification and selfinterest appear to be the prime motivators when decisions are made. Communicate and model that all decisions and choices can be reviewed: levels of anxiety are higher among young people than they have ever been. This can lead to a situation where they are paralysed by the decisions they need to make and the implications thereof. Being open, as adults, to the reality that decisions can (and indeed should) be reviewed as time, experience and circumstances change and that few decisions are irrevocable can be liberating and empowering for young people. Most decisions and choices are not absolutely critical in their importance! Have the courage to acknowledge our mistakes or misjudgements: yes, as parents and teachers we make mistakes and choose the wrong option or course of action on a regular basis. This does not take away from our positive intentions or our commitment to our children. Mistakes and misjudgements give us the opportunity to be honest, to acknowledge learning and to model grit and perseverance in starting again. There is no shame in this, no loss of credibility or respect. In fact, an error openly and humbly embraced by an adult builds one’s respect and credibility in the eyes of a teen. Yes, we expect a lot of our politicians and leaders when it comes to principled decision-making. Is not an easy process to make ethical, responsible decisions. I would suggest that bearing the above four strategies in mind when engaging our young people around decisions may go some way to giving them the benefit of sound decision making.

MONEY MATTERS
10 HABITS OF FINANCIALLY INDEPENDENT PEOPLE
MEET CRUE INVEST’S TEAM OF
FINANCIAL, LEGAL AND TAX EXPERTS
By Sue Torr
Director at Crue Invest Financial independence allows a person control over one of our greatest gifts here on earth: time. Regardless of the monetary value of financial success, the emotional value found in being truly financially independent is earned through these time-tested habits:
1. Don’t procrastinate
Assuming an average working career that spans from age 25 to 65, the average person has about 480 pay cheques to fund for a retirement that may last for 30 or 35 years. The sooner one harnesses the power of compound interest in the wealth accumulation process, the better.
2. Educate yourself
A common trait of the financially independent few is the emphasis they place on reading and life-long education. We are fortunate to have world class publications such as Personal Finance, Fin24 and Financial Mail (amongst many others) that provide brilliant insight and commentary on the financial planning environment. Anton Chekov noted, “Knowledge is of no value unless you put it to practice.”
3. Consult the experts
Our advice is to seek out a fee-based financial advisory practice where unfettered and independent advice is dispensed in your personal best interests. Ideally, appoint a team of advisors who are able to provide you with consolidated financial, tax and legislative advice in a single, comprehensive financial plan.
4. Develop a plan
Your team of experts should be wellequipped to develop an easy-tounderstand, workable and adaptable financial plan for financial independence, encompassing all of the following areas: • Short-term savings & money management • Medium-term investing • Retirement planning • Risk protection • Tax planning • Estate structuring • Budgeting • Succession Planning
5. Protect against risk
The ability to generate an income during one’s pre-retirement years is the platform upon which one’s entire retirement plan is constructed, and should be protected at all costs. Although insurance is considered a grudge-purchase, money spent on income protection in the event of disability is money well spent.
6. Control personal debt
Financial independence is often the result of an individual’s unwavering commitment to make sacrifices earlier on in life such as driving less expensive cars, enjoying local holidays and avoiding unnecessary debt. Controlling personal debt involves living now like others won’t so you can live later like others can’t.
7. Align spending with your goals
Every purchase you consciously make today is a withdrawal from a goal or dream you have planned for tomorrow. Those who are financially independent are adept at aligning their current spending with their future goals.
8. Maximise tax efficiency
With effect from March 2016, investors can invest up to 27.5% (subject to a limit of R350 000) of their taxable income into a retirement fund on a tax-free basis, which is significant. Retirement annuities now offer an opportunity for investment into flexible, unit trust-based RAs on a tax-free basis - sans penalties, cancellation fees and unfathomable investment returns. No income tax or CGT is charged on the investment returns earned in a retirement annuity.
9. Don’t act impulsively
Behavioural finance is a very wellresearched area of human psychology - and one of the key roles played by a financial advisor is that of sounding board for all future financial decisions.

PINELANDER Brandon Paul Voigt introduces the Muse to "the most amazing hobby ever" - Drifting, using radio controlled model cars. His eyes light up as he explains the artful technique of oversteering the cars until they lose traction and slide (drift) around the corners of the track, avoiding the barriers and aiming for specific markers to gain points to become the winner. Courageous and determined to enjoy life and be a useful part of the community, he treasures the friends that he has made at the track, who help him to live a normal life during his battle with cancer.
BRANDON VOIGT
TELL US ABOUT YOUR SUCCESS AT THE 2015 NATIONALS
After joining the RC drifting club D-EVO (Drifting Evolution), which I found on facebook, I have been going to practices every Wednesday night at the Kenilworth go-kart track, near Access Park. We set up our own course, have fun and learn from each other. Every month we have competitions and last year I joined the Cape Town team for the national drifting championships in Johannesburg. It was my first time competing in the nationals and I was delighted to get placed 30th.
DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR FIRST RC CAR?
Yes - it is a TTO1, a good starter kit, which served me well at the nationals. Right now it is disassembled, as I am trying out some
www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za
new counter steer technology. I have two chassis to work with and a few shells which I shaped, painted and decorated. Cisco, the organiser of the D-EVO club, has been a great help with mastering the technique of drifting.
WHAT SORT OF TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS CAN ONE MAKE ON THE RC DRIFTING CARS?
There is always new technology coming into the market such as controlling the car via your mobile phone; or having a camera on board the car for a virtual driving experience. Drifting using rear wheel drive is gaining popularity. It is a bit slower as only the rear wheels are used to power the car - and although it is more difficult it looks more elegant when the cars drift around the corners. Another innovation is to fit a gyro which helps to keep the car from spinning out of the drift.
TELL US MORE ABOUT THE D-EVO CLUB
There are about 20 of us, of varying ages, who meet at the track on a Wednesday evening. There are no membership fees, just a small fee on the night for the use of the track (R30 for practice nights and R50 for regionals). There is no charge for spectators, so anyone and everyone is welcome. There are Cape Town regional competitions and although I haven't
won, I was awarded "Drifter of the Day" in November last year. For info on our club see www.facebook.com/devodriftclub/.
WHY IS FEELING 'NORMAL' SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?
There came a point where I was tired of being tired and decided that cancer would not be a priority in my life. Family and friends are important to me; and I would like to feel that I have contributed to society and the community around me - especially as everyone has been so good to me. "Amazing Grace" has given me a great opportunity to contribute and feel independent by employing me at her coffee shop, Grace's, once a week. It is hard work but I enjoy it and have met some awesome people... and my name is registered at a modelling agency - where will that go?
AWESOME MAGIC TRICKS
A couple of years ago I discovered what a wonderful tool magic tricks can be in entertaining people and making them smile. It started when I kept my cousin busy by showing him card tricks. My search for "something different" - not the run of the mill type of trick was encouraged by Jacques le Sueur, "champion magician", also from Pinelands. I have enjoyed

HOW DID YOU GET INTO DRIFTING?
I was diagnosed with cancer when I was 15 and after four years of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery to remove tumours from my lungs and brain - the wonderful staff at Vincent Pallotti put my name forward to the Reach for a Dream Foundation who organised for two radio controlled model car kits for myself and best friend Ridah. We built our first cars and tried them out on the road in a nearby cul de sac - a bit hard wearing on the tyres...

CELEBRATION
60TH BIRTHDAY FOR CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL The Annual tea hosted by the Children's Hospital Trust was a significant occasion this year celebrating the day when the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital first opened its doors in 1956. Supporters of the Trust, including one of the first patients treated at the hospital, Gillian Kaganison, enjoyed a delicious tea in the Kelvin Grove Ballroom, while listening to two auspicious guest speakers.
PROFESSOR JENNIFER THOMAS

performing at the Cape Town Magic Circle; done a fundraiser for Reach for a Dream and entertained guests at a 70th birthday party. My favourite is to go back to what I call "my hospital" (Vincent Pallotti) and there, try to cheer up the staff and patients in the oncology unit. It gives me great pleasure to see them smile or gasp in disbelief when the unexpected happens!
Liz Linsell Head of legacies at the Children's Hospital Trust introduced the first speaker, a Pinelander, Emeritus Professor Jenny Thomas, previous Head of Anaesthesiology at Red Cross Children's Hospital. Prof Thomas told the audience that pain control was non-existent in the early days and families were not allowed to be with their children while in hospital. She described the advancement of anaesthesiology at the hospital mentioning pioneer Arthur Bull who introduced the use of halothane in 1957, as well as using his talent as a silversmith to make the necessary equipment; Joe Osinsky who was the anaesthesiologist at the first heart transplant and Thomas Voss who took a particular interest in safety during anaesthesia. On a personal note Prof Thomas describes work in a surgical theatre as dramatic and exciting where constant vigilance and monitoring is essential. The hospital is world renowned for its management of conjoined twins and Prof Thomas praises the interaction of the surgical team, noting too that the high calibre of paediatric healthcare at Red Cross Children's Hospital would not be possible without the constant support and fund
raising done by the Hospital Trust.
BRAAM MALHERBE
The second speaker of the day - also with Pinelands connections, was Braam Malherbe, an extreme adventurer / conservationist committed to preserving the planet for future generations. He is well known for his epic marathon run along the Great Wall of China in 2006. He and friend David Grier completed the distance of 4 200km, effectively running a 43km marathon six days a week for 98 days. The purpose of this enormous feat was to raise funds for "Operation smile" a program for corrective facial surgery for children. Many children who considered themselves "ugly" due to a cleft palate have had remarkable surgery that not only enhances their appearance but has boosted their confidence and given them a new lease on life. Braam is inspirational and believes we can all do something to help the world and those around us by "doing one thing". To become a part of The Circle of Life and contribute to the future of the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, contact the Hospital Trust at 021 686 7860, or email cht@chtrust.org.za. Alternatively go to www.children'shospitaltrust.org.za. YOUR PHILOSOPHY
"Don't give up. Treat each day as your most precious gift and make the most of it. Have fun and laugh a lot".  The Muse interviewer, Glynnis Schutte, was treated to a series of mind boggling card tricks which were entertaining, not only because of their breathtaking cleverness, but because of Brandon's ability to tell a story along with the trick and the clearly apparent sense of humour that colours his life.

OUT AND ABOUT
The Famous Vergenoegd RUNNER DUCK PARADE Vergenoegd Wine estate started breeding Indian Runner Ducks in 1984 to use on the estate to control snails and other pests. They now have over 1 000 runner ducks which flock down to the vineyards, once, twice - sometimes three times a day to the great amusement of onlookers who can't help but smile at the tidal wave of "regop" birds reminiscent of penguins. We were looking for outside entertainment on a chilly winter's day and made our way to Vergenoegd down the N2, taking Exit 33 onto Baden-Powell Drive, going towards Stellenbosch. We didn't have to go far - with the Cape Town Film Studios on our left, we noticed our turning to the right. We followed the dirt track to the 1696 Vergenoegd Farmstead and settled in front of the fire for breakfast before the appointed time for the "duck parade".
www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za
Waiting in anticipation on the lawns, cameras at the ready, we were thrilled when the first ducks appeared through the entrance. Wave after wave followed, flowing onto the lawns accompanied by the deafening quacking of hundreds of hungry ducks! They made their way, shepherded by "Flock Flagsmen" past the cellars to the dam for a swim. Then, from there they made their way to the vineyards to have their lunch. The whole spectacle is exciting and well worth seeing‌ and it is free! Vergenoegd also offers coffee, tea, olive oil and wine blending; lunches, and teas. It is advisable to phone and book: 021 843 3248 or email info@vergenoegd.co.za. Duck Parade times: Mon to Fri: 9:45am & 3:30pm. Sat: 10am & 12:30pm & 3:30pm. TRAVEL
ZANZIBAR
ISLAND BLISS By Judelle Drake
Main Photo: An unusual dining option, the Rock. Below from top down: Cows and Dhows on the beach which is knee deep for a long way out. The Double Tree by Hilton. Fishing Dhow beached at low tide.
July 2016 | the muse | 17
Just the name Zanzibar has always conjured up the notion of an exotic island, the smell of spices and the lure of white sands. Whilst the island remains very much under-developed to our Western eyes, it is a magical destination. The warmth hits you as you emerge from the tiny airport, to retrieve your luggage stacked in a pile. It wasn't a huge problem and the good news is that a new terminal is being built. The roads are bordered by verdant green coconut palms, hundreds of banana trees, lush undergrowth and decrepit looking buildings and shops. The local transport, called Dala-dalas, are converted small lorries with two rows of wooden seats at the back, carrying passengers on local runs around town and to outlying suburbs. We also passed carts pulled by cows. These cows cannot be sold for meat, but unscrupulous owners try and sell them in an area where they are not known. However, as the island is only 85 km long, this is not always possible! The journey to our accommodation at Double Tree by Hilton in the village of Nungwi in the North was over very potholed, dusty dirt roads - a bumpy experience and our first introduction to "The Free African Massage" as labelled by all the drivers. Nungwi Beach is home to the ancient craft of dhow making. Some fishermen were building fires beneath their boats so we asked them why they were destroying them? The answer was that they were sealing the hulls! We loved watching the fishermen working on their boats before setting sail at high tide. The tides in Zanzibar are amazing. At low tide one can walk knee deep for ages and ages. At Nungwi beach one can get all the way out to the moored dhows just by walking. The sea is gloriously warm! We took our first tour with a private guide
to Jozani Forest which is home to the Red Colobus monkeys endemic to Zanzibar. They live in troops of 30 - 50 and get into fights with rival troops from time to time, according to our very informative guide. The monkeys are free within this large reserve so watching them leap with total abandon from the high branches with such ease, is incredible. Very difficult to photograph though, as the forest is quite dense. Our guide was able to mimic the calls, getting us to a spot where there was a small troupe. Heading into Stone Town one leaves the tranquil beach scenes far behind. It is a bustling place with many cars and pedestrians. The local people do not like having their photographs taken. This is so different to the people of India who simply love to have their photos taken and would ask our names and where we were from. Different cultures - different ideas - it all makes for interesting travel experiences! The inner city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000 and is best explored on foot. Zanzibar is also known as “the Spice Island", where cloves are known as the “King of Spices” and cinnamon as the queen. The bark of the cinnamon tree smells simply divine. Peppercorns come in black, green, white or red - all the same but just at different stages of maturity. The lipstick tree fascinated me as the red from the berries looks just like lipstick when rubbed on the lips! This fruit is also used in red curries. We loved our short stay on this island it's an interesting mix of old traditions, combined with modern hotels catering to the ever expanding tourist trade. Ideal for our South African market as one can book and pay locally in ZAR and the flight from Johannesburg, with Mango, is only three and a half hours long!

Soak bread in water in a bowl. Heat oil in a large saucepan and fry mince in batches until golden. Spoon out. Sauté onions, garlic and ginger until soft. 2. Add spices and dried herbs and fry until aromatic. Preheat oven to 180 ˚C. 3. Stir in mince, bread and jam. Simmer for 20 minutes, add apricots or raisins, lemon juice and season to taste. Spoon into an oven dish. 4. Mix eggs and coconut milk and season to taste. Pour over meat mixture and top with bay leaves. Sprinkle with coconut and bake for 20-25 minutes or until set. 5. Spice up your winter
A comforting and subtly spiced mince mixture with egg custard on top – yes, if you are South African, chances are you also love bobotie. The Cape-Malay style spices gives this dish its unique taste and most people have a family recipe with a personalised variation or something that makes their version special. You may also have your preference for flaked almonds and bay leaves or a combination of both as part of the topping and a variety of dairy products are used to make the custard, from milk to cream and even buttermilk. These days bobotie is enjoyed with a wide range of accompaniments and in
some innovative ways. Have you ever had bobotie spring rolls or bobotie mince in a pancake or on a sandwich? I recently made this comforting winter dish with a few exciting twists. Instead of the usual raisins in the mince, I used Turkish apricots. Coconut milk and coconut shavings made a delicious topping and the synergy between the spices and coconut was perfect. To further ring the changes, an avo and dried fruit salsa is served with the meat as an alternative to chutney. Everyone enjoyed it, so I’m definitely making this more than once this winter.
