SURPRISING AND UNPREDICTABLE IS THE NEW NORMAL The shock Brexit result in the UK and Donald Trump being elected as the Republican Presidential Candidate in the USA have dominated the news lately. None of the experts or polls saw them coming and had confidently predicted the opposite result. It seems that disappointed and frustrated voters caused these unpredictable results by voting against the establishment simply to register a protest against the status quo, not necessarily because they believed in what they were voting for. They possibly saw it as an action of last resort to make authorities pay attention to them. Individuals may not have counted on the groundswell of similar intention which resulted in the protest vote winning the day, rather than just the desired ‘wake-up klap’ to the establishment. These events underline how hard it has become to understand and predict outcomes or effects when people’s opinions, highly interconnected by social and traditional media, can quickly grow into an irresistible movement with a life of its own. What these outcomes have also shown is the depth and complexity of the interconnection of people and economies across the world, to the point where it is no longer possible to accurately predict ripple effects. One is left just waiting to see how it will all play out. In our own case, the Brexit result was good for the embattled Rand in the short term, but how will it affect our economy longer term as the economic realities seep in? No one really knows. There is even some thought that a reversal of the referendum is not entirely impossible as the hang-over of the real meaning of Brexit bites. Looking ahead to our own Municipal Elections on 3 August 2016… Will they hold any big surprises, given the significant pool of disgruntled voters impatient for improved services and job opportunities? We too will have to wait and see what your vote on Wednesday 3 August will mean for us! Enjoy the issue!

ACACIA PIED BARBET The Acacia Pied Barbet is a rare sighting in Pinelands, but is instantly recognisable and often draws attention to itself with its distinctive calls. It uses its heavy bill to drill holes in wood. The Acacia Pied Barbet (also known as the Bont Houtkapper) is closely related to woodpeckers. It roosts and nests in a hole in a tree, like a woodpecker. This species has become much more common around Cape Town in recent decades, although in the last few years it has become more scarce again for unknown reasons. Thornton has shown remarkable growth in average selling prices in the past three years as can be seen in the table. A three bedroomed home will now sell for around R1.750m, with the most expensive sale, according to Lightstone, a home in Manatoka Avenue which sold for R2.250m last year.

Rentals in Thornton have also shown a marked increase, with a monthly rental of R15 000 being advertised for a newly renovated home. It is difficult to find good accommodation to rent for under R10 000pm. Despite the economy showing signs of slowing Thornton remains very popular with a shortage of stock, both for sale and to rent.

Intaka Island - Well known for its beautiful serene wetlands and bird sanctuary with various eco-friendly projects offers boat trips led by experienced guides taking passengers through the myriad of waterways surrounding Canal Walk and Century City. MANDELA DAY – TIME2SERVE During the run-up to Mandela Day, HPCA (Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa) called on the public and companies to donate to their charity shop, the Butterfly Box. This is a platform from which HPCA can educate the public about palliative care and the wonderful work of hospices, and generate much-needed funds. The charity shop is stocked with new and previously-loved designer and top quality clothing at bargain prices, situated in Threads Project, 349 Albert Road Woodstock. Threads have kindly waived the Butterfly Box rent and made it their social responsibility programme, allowing more of the profits to be donated to HPCA. Lasec, an African supplier of many internationally recognised brands of scientific and laboratory equipment, decided as a company to collect previously-loved clothing and on Monday 18 July, their 67 bags of clothing were donated to the Butterfly Box. A joyful event where HPCA representative Zodwa Sithole accepted the generous donation by Lasec representative Katie Brock, accompanied by the Lasec team - truly a story of fashion with compassion. So far the installed cameras have been working well and we have made good progress. During May there were SAPS requests for footage and information. A total of 154 LPR notifications were received. For June there were a further 156 LPR notifications and with the recent completion of the Nightingale camera this number could increase. SAPS have also made numerous requests for access to footage.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

If vehicle details have been loaded onto the system, a notification is sent when the vehicle goes past an LPR camera. The notifications indicate vehicles involved in confirmed criminal activity, or in suspicious activity. The PSCP is in the final stages of connecting to the main SAPS crime data. All data received from the LPR cameras is confidential and no footage or images can be shared with unauthorised users due to privacy laws in South Africa. Whilst most verbal agreements are binding in South African law, first prize is always to record them in writing. Otherwise you risk doubt, dispute and delay down the line. NARDA AND LEON RUBENS Their journey down memory lane begins with a chance meeting at South Africa House in London during 1949. Leon had gone from Johannesburg to the UK to “become a great art director” but discovered he had to have a degree in architecture to register for the course. Narda, from Heidelberg was in the UK to study the film industry but was not allowed to because of the union rules. Leon and Narda married in 1954 and raised two children - Adinda who became a dance therapist and sadly passed away last year; and a laat lammetjie Alida who is an accountant in the film industry. Leon and Narda are blessed with four grandchildren. The ninety year olds are fiercely independent and live in the home they have occupied for the last 46 years.

SECRETS OF A LONG HAPPY LIFE

Well, Narda claims "vegetables are good for you", but Leon disagrees! They have

not escaped their fair share of medical problems - Narda has a pacemaker and Leon has had bypass surgery, but they are both remarkably well and active for their 90 years. They believe in being grateful for what they have; and developing a positive attitude towards life; making an effort to develop a specific talent or interest to keep active in mind and body. They also strongly agree that we should be aware of life and what is going on around us and of what we are doing that affects society and the world.

His paintings focus on the mighty Table Mountain and Leon's reflections are patent and beautiful as he brings the mountain to life in bold graphic strokes of the brush. He feels the mood of the country and portrays it in the darker version of Table Mountain - see next page top right. It is easy to understand why the darker, brooding version is entitled "The Rainbow Nation in Turmoil".

LEON'S FAVOURITE INSPIRATION

Leon taught art at the East London Art School for 6 years before being transferred to lecture at the Cape Technikon. He loved teaching, loved passing on his knowledge and love of the arts to his students. Satisfaction in his own art expression was not realised until he retired and he was free to pursue his favoured style. Both Leon and Narda are well travelled and have been

Leon and Narda Rubens are preparing for an art exhibition to be held in September. Pinelanders for 46 years and married for 62 years, they share the excitement of their artistic achievements with Muse readers - leading us through the highlights of their careers and how fine art, film and photography have shaped their lives and still provides them with challenges and joy in their nineties!

Leon feels their travel experience enhanced their teaching, so that they could speak from the heart - one of the most meaningful journeys was to Burma where their daughter was doing missionary work. Leon finds it particularly heart-warming when he hears about the success of his past students, such as Paul Emsley who was chosen to paint the first official portrait of the Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine Middleton, for the National Portrait Gallery in London.

PAINTING EXHIBITIONS

Since retiring in 1989 Leon has had a number of art exhibitions. Eight years ago Cecil Skotness, a prominent South African artist from East London, opened a solo exhibition for Leon at the Cape of Good Hope Castle. Leon realised there was a market for his work even though, in his own words “It is not pretty - it is not avant -garde - but there is an element of realism”.

STORIES ARISING FROM NARDA'S ART

The digital age of photography hasn't left Narda behind, although she doesn't enjoy working with a computer or "being told what to do by a computer"! She has bravely and excitedly taken up painting lessons with Adolfo McQue (also a previous student of Leon’s), and paints her own backgrounds against which she places her chosen objects for photography. Shown on the

cover of this Muse edition is a portion of one her creations featuring a glass paperweight. There is an intricate story woven behind The Orb set of works arising from a time when Narda was recovering from a hip operation. Her gaze fell upon the glass paperweight radiating light on the windowsill… and the story began. “What would happen if orbs could go wherever they chose to - under shrubs to meet the diva of plants and fairies, up to the clouds, down to the sea pools, up to the base of the mountain, and up even further to the rainbow - and ... what is behind the rainbow?”

NARDA’S LOVE OF PHOTOGRAPHY

As a child Narda had been told by her primary school teacher, an aunt, that she would never draw, so she concentrated on photography after being given a Brownie box camera. When a professional portrait photographer moved to town she helped to clean the studio and picked up as many photography tips as possible. There was the added bonus of getting paid and being able to go the cinema (something her father didn’t really agree with). After qualifying with a BA degree in languages Narda headed off to London to study cinematography but the trade union rules prevented that, so she did an apprenticeship in scriptwriting at Ealing Studios. This training held her in good stead, not only for the years when she taught photography at the Cape Technikon, but

especially towards her business venture with John Hill. The two of them established The Cape Town Film and Television School, which they ran successfully for 20 years, winning gold awards at the London Amateur Film Festival and producing both Emmy and Oscar winners.

DOESN’T REGRET NOT BEING ABLE TO DRAW

Narda retired 16 years ago - she has extensive experience in combining images using her slides and dark room techniques. The current challenge is to create the background for her photography and she says with a grin “sometimes I like my own paintings!” Narda has joined the Cape Town Photographic Society, which meets in Pinelands, and finds the lectures very interesting. She enjoys the competitions (although she doesn’t enter because of the computer expertise required). Narda is looking forward now to the exhibition at the Methodist Church in September; and also to another solo exhibition at the Artscape opening at 6pm on 15th August 2016. All Pinelanders are welcome! Look out for the artworks of Leon and Narda at the exhibition at the Methodist Church on the 3rd September. There will be 11 local artists, including Rae Smit who featured as a Pinelander in the Muse March 2014 edition. The exhibition runs from 9am to 4 pm and there will be fun Art Sessions for beginners and refreshments on sale. See Calender insert page 2. 

KON-TIKI PIONEERING RAFT BUILD

Scouts WP runs a number of annual intertroop competitions in the Western Cape, e.g. Rayner Senior Hiking, Upton Junior Hiking and Gordon’s Camping. Kon-Tiki is the annual raft building competition, which focuses on pioneering (building with poles and rope) and is held annually at the Muizenberg Sea Scout Base at Sandvlei. Kon-Tiki is different from other competitions because the entire Scout Group can be involved, i.e. cubs and relatives can help the Scouts to build the raft and then participate in fringe activities (e.g. outdoor cooking, cross country) on land, alongside the scouts’ fringe teams, who compete against other fringe teams in land-based activities, whilst the raft teams of 6 scouts compete in scouting skills and other competitions as they live on the raft for 24 hours.

This year the First Pinelands team was led by Imke Mühr, who was assisted by Ashley Davies in charge of the fringe team. A number of parents helped, particularly Thomas Mühr, who helped to design and prebuild the cabin in his driveway over 9:22 PM the 2 months preceding the competition, which was held 8-10 April 2016. “Sith”

COMPLEX PLANNING

The competition is logistically demanding and takes a great deal of planning and preparation. Every board is cut to size and painted to the annual theme before the time, to make it physically possible to complete the final construction in the 13 hours allocated. (No nails, glue, screws allowed, only rope.) Rafts are approximately 5m x 6m, constructed of a frame of gum poles lashed onto 15 to 25 drums, with decking secured to the frame and a waterproof cabin with a separate loo constructed on top.

Keep an eye out for this event next year in late March or early April. It’s well worth coming to Sandvlei to join in the fun. There is a tuck shop on site where meals can be purchased, and children, in particular, will love the spectacle of the opening parade and the launching of the rafts around noon of the Saturday. 

eFILING MADE EASY

1 July 2016 marked the opening of the new tax season, meaning individuals can complete and submit their income tax returns. Crue’s legal advisor and tax expert, Eric Jordaan, recently appeared on SABC 3’s Expresso Morning Show to provide insight on how to make eFiling easy. Here’s how:

The current assessment period

The 2016 tax year started on 1 March 2015 and ended on 29 February 2016, and this is referred to as the assessment period. The tax season for individuals runs from 1 July 2016 to 25 November 2016, and during this period you need to submit your tax return which is known as an ITR12. This will allow SARS to reconcile the tax on your income and the tax deductible expenses for the year of assessment. Bear in mind that you can only claim for deductions that were applicable for the assessment period (1/3/2015 to 29/2/2016).

To get ready to submit your tax return, you will need the following: • IRP5 and/or IT3(a) certificates from your employer or pension fund • IT3(b) certificates for investment returns • Financial statements (if applicable) • Medical aid contribution certificates and receipts • Retirement annuity certificates • Certificates for local interest income earned • Logbook and other documents in support of business travel expenses • Bank account details Remember, if you are using eFiling, you will be required to keep your supporting documents safely for a period of five years - in case SARS audits your return.

How quickly will SARS process my tax return?

If you earn under R350 000 for a full year from one employer (that’s your total salary income before tax) and have no other sources of additional income (for example, interest or rental income) and no deductions that you want to claim (for example medical expenses, travel or retirement annuities), then you don’t need to submit a return.

The sooner you submit your return, the sooner you will receive any refund that is due to you. Of the R15 billion that SARS refunded to 1.82 million taxpayers in last year’s tax season, 95% was paid out within 72 hours of the returns being submitted. Last year, 95% of returns were assessed within three seconds and more than 99% within 24 hours.

What is the easiest way to submit my tax return?

It is vital to ensure that all information is accurately captured with information and figures that reflect on your supporting documents. For example, for the current year of assessment, you will only be entitled to claim retirement fund contributions up to 15% of your taxable income as the new 27.5% ruling is only applicable to your 2017 return. If you are claiming for medical expenses that you could not recover from your medical aid, make sure that the expenses were incurred during the 2016 tax year. Bear in mind that, if one is audited by SARS, the taxpayer will be required to produce all supporting documentation and information that was used for eFiling.

eFiling is the most efficient way of filing your tax return, through the excellent SARS website at www.sarsefiling.co.za. To complete your registration you need: • Your tax registration number/s • Your ID number • Your personal details

When do I file my tax return?

The date depends on how you submit it and whether or not you are a provisional taxpayer. The deadlines are as follows: • If you are not a provisional taxpayer and you file your return via eFiling, the due date is 25 November 2016. • If you are a provisional taxpayer and you file your return via eFiling, you must file by 31 January 2017. • If you submit your return by post or drop it off at a SARS branch, irrespective of whether you are or are not a provisional taxpayer, the deadline is 23 Sept 2016. • If you file your return electronically at a SARS branch, irrespective of whether or not you are a provisional taxpayer, the deadline is 25 November 2016.

Most importantly, tax season provides fraudsters with fresh opportunities to steal your money. To avoid becoming the victim of a SARS scam, bear in mind that SARS will never request your banking or personal details via any communication that one receives by post, email, phone or sms. Although Albert Einstein believed that “the hardest thing to understand in the world is income tax”, the South African Revenue Service has done a world class job of streamlining tax filing for all South Africans via the eFiling system. 

THE ROLE OF A PRIVATE FACILITATOR IN HIGH SCHOOL Private facilitators are increasingly becoming part of the support solution for children with special learning or physical needs. They are the much needed extra pair of hands, eyes and ears and a critical link between home and school. The ultimate aim of a facilitator is to assist in bringing about meaningful learning for the child, without compromising the integrity of the curriculum and the assessment process. Facilitator Training: Recruitment and selection of a facilitator can easily be a hit or miss matter. There are very few places of training for private facilitators, so schools often provide their own in-service training. Ultimately, the best training is on the job. Add to this a supportive staff, realistic parents and a dedicated facilitator and you have the winning formula. Selecting a facilitator: Applicants are sourced from part-time students needing a day job for extra income, retirees, exteachers or people who start out as volunteers. An interview is set up with the school and the child, where the school can gauge the suitability of the applicant, based on the dynamics of the class, the demands of the curriculum, and the specific boundaries for the facilitator. Confidentiality is paramount: It is important to note that the facilitator is now entering an environment with access to confidential information about children. As facilitators are not bound by the (South African Council of Educators) SACE code of confidential conduct, measures to protect confidential information must be put in place. An unintentional comment from a facilitator

about even an innocent observation of another child in the classroom can have far reaching ethical consequences. Parents should add a period of probation in their employment contract with the facilitator. Transparency and good values: Teenagers are experts at sussing out mysteries! Transparency from the start, explaining the reason and role of the facilitator helps with the successful integration of the facilitator into a high school classroom. This is the ideal place for the enrichment of the values of helpfulness, nurturing and empathy. An effective facilitator: Ultimately the private facilitator blends in with the classroom background. They are very present but invisible. They know how to strike a balance between being alert, but “low key” and “can fly under the radar”. They are able to keep a simultaneous eye on their charge and on the lesson presentation. They can sense trouble before it happens and take quick and effective evasive action. Good facilitator skills: Facilitators are good communicators and listeners. They can clarify, rephrase, restate and summarise a lesson so that the child is able to extract meaning from what is often perceived as classroom clamour. They are adept at using technology, turning voice recordings of their lesson summaries into MP3 files. They are super organisers with excellent planning skills. They never say no to extra notes from the teacher and keep a master file of every subject. Yet, they know that the teacher is in charge of the class. They assist the child with exam studies, at least three weeks ahead of time, decreasing exam anxiety.

Well rounded personality : Facilitators are versatile and flexible. They are caring and supportive. They are quiet cheerleaders with a positive and encouraging attitude. Yet they are firm and consistent. At all times they are the child’s facilitator and not their friend. They do not take the child’s social blunders personally and are not easily shocked. They are not scared to delve deep into a school bag to find squashed sandwiches or smelly socks. Above all they have a great sense of humour. The importance of independence: Successful facilitators make sure that the child becomes as independent as possible. They do not create a dependence syndrome! Facilitation at school is about allowing the child to learn skills that will help them to do their best. Facilitators do not succumb to parental pressure of “I have employed you so that my child can achieve good marks.” A fine balance: In his book, Learning Support Assistants (1998), G. Fox warns against the facilitator becoming the overgrown pupil, who answers all the teacher’s questions or the piggy in the middle, running between the parent and the school to explain things, or the spy in the classroom causing mistrust between the school and the parent or even the dogsbody doing the skivvy work. When a successful high school facilitator was asked what NOT to do, they replied: Never, ever single out a teenager in front of his peers or his teacher in the classroom, it is most embarrassing! 

Wild Coast 114KM OF TRAIL RUNNING

Four years ago my mother showed me a magazine article – the Wild Coast Wild Run. Three days of trail running along the coast from the Kei Mouth to Hole-in-theWall, a total of 114km. Not being a runner myself, but loving that part of the country, I agreed to do it with my mom, an avid runner herself. In January 2013 we were accepted to run in September that year.

GRUELLING DAY ONE - KNEE INJURY

When September rolled around we drove up to Kei Mouth, got our kit, listened to the race briefing and prepared ourselves mentally for the next three days. Before sunrise we were at the river mouth waiting for the ferry to take us across to the official start line. And then we were off! The first day is 44km, mostly on sand. With a strong headwind and a knee injury, I struggled! I was also not as fit as I should have been! With the strong wind and slow pace, by the time we were within 4km of the end point for Day 1, the tide had turned and the final river crossing was no longer safe. We were encouraged, although not forced, to hop into the sweep vehicle and be driven to

the hotel for the night. Not really wanting to give up, but not feeling 100% safe about the river crossing, we succumbed. Even though the race marshals had told us otherwise, we were given a DNF (Did Not Finish) for the day.

GOOD FINISH BUT OVERALL RESULT “DNF”

Day 2 was a bit easier and at just over 35km, was significantly shorter. We finished no problems! By Day 3 my knee injury was causing a lot of pain, but we finished the 34km strongly. Unfortunately though, our overall race time was still a DNF because of the first day. Those 4km have been weighing on me ever since! Towards the end of last year I decided it was time to end this unfinished business: however, this time I would give myself extra motivation to complete all 114km.

THE 2016 WILD RUN - FOR A GOOD CAUSE

and freezing in winter. The school has about 165 children from Grade R through to Grade 7. The school also tries to feed the learners every day, but this is dependent on the government feeding programme and learners are often sent home early because of empty tummies! Other needs include blackboards, books (reading and writing), stationery, educational tools/posters/ games, sports equipment, non-perishable foods and cooking utensils.

RUNNING FOR EDUCATION - FIRST PROJECT A local tiler is willing to undertake the work, and with his quote and estimates of cost of materials, we have a conservative budget of at least R25 000 for the tiling of all five classrooms. The 2016 run is from 1 – 3 September. The goal would be to work on the school in the December holidays, so as not to interrupt the students’ learning.

Over the years we have built relationships with local families, other cottage owners and the land itself. The Wild Coast is one of the most beautiful areas in the country, if not the world, and one cannot help developing a connection to the land and its people.

By Alex Falcon “The most exciting achievement in my life so far was during the 2015 Sailing National Championships, in Wriggleswade, Eastern Cape, where I was selected to represent South Africa in Portugal, for the Optimist Worlds Sailing Championships. The intense training on and off the water that followed, was the cherry on the cake because this is what I love to do! At a certain stage I really hoped I would skip some school but, no, this didn’t happen. My teachers, on the other hand, I must say, were all cheering for me and wishing me all the best.

FORMULA ONE OF JUNIOR SAILING

The Optimist Worlds is an under 16 competition but the level is so high that you can call it the Formula One of junior sailing. Your participation is something you must write in your CV, if you are considering making a career out of sailing, like I am doing. If you have been there, only once in your life, every sailor will respect you.

compete in two races per day for six days. The starts are the most difficult but also the most important part in a sailing regatta. If you mess up a start, in a blink - you are dead last. I have learned to shout a lot to defend my space at the starts in big competitions but this is always a very delicate moment. The judges were also very strict and a lot of sailors were black flagged - disqualified for that race even if they did their penalty. It was essential to follow all the sailing rules strictly, even the way you moved in the boat. The sailor who was leading the championship, got disqualified on the last day and the one who was second on the ranking, became the World Champion.

ITALIAN GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT

Since I was the only South African, I was lucky enough to associate with the Italian team who had one sailor, Marco, finishing 4th in the championship. Their coach was amazing. I learned so much from him. Each morning he could tell us, before each race, which side to start, which side to beat upwind, what to expect, which current, which wave, what to avoid. He was also funny. The best. My new team mates were also incredible and Marco taught me how to perform the perfect light wind tack. So, my result at the end was not exceptional but each day I was doing better and better

and I can say that the experience was really great and I am already dreaming of my next Optimist Worlds, next year, in Thailand.

SAILING AS A PROFESSION

In many countries sailing is seen as a good, remunerative profession, fully sponsored by governments or private companies so you can meet amazing coaches, managers, team leaders - all very skilled.

HOLIDAY IN ITALY

Once Optimist Worlds in Portugal was finished, I joined my family in Italy for just a few days and I had a really great time. In Tuscany I did some climbing in beautiful places, with my Uncle Andrea, who also took me to a model car circuit with jumps and parabolic turns, something amazing I have never seen before. Then I went to Rome where my Grandpa, who builds parts for helicopters, got a special permit, and took me to visit an air force base. Uncle Luca, who is a MTB guide, took me to some ancient Etruscan tombs and Roman remains and across incredible waterfalls. It was unforgettable as was the huge icecream that followed! I consider myself lucky to have this passion for sailing and I really hope to have more opportunities like the one I have just had." 
