WHAT ARE THE REAL VALUABLES?

The past few weeks at the Muse have been dominated by recovering from a burglary. Thankfully, we were not at home at the time so we were unharmed, which is the most important thing. More than the loss of the physical items, the real price has been the time taken to regain a 'normal' life and trying to deal with feelings about the experience so it doesn't linger as an ongoing fear in the future. It felt as though a month of our lives was stolen by having to go through the wasteful grind of paperwork, repairs and getting home and business systems up again. Thank you to the many friends, family, neighbours and clients who offered help and commiserations. We really appreciate it. You are the real jewels that help to restore what the soul loses in the incident. What else did we learn from the experience? Here are a few things we thought we could share with you, and particularly for home business owners. Having excellent security may not prevent intrusion by determined and 'professional' thieves; It can happen to you, even after decades of crime-free living. It can happen very quickly – a few minutes is all it takes to cherry pick your valuables. When the 'security cavalry' arrives it may well be too late. Use your guile to conceal valuables where they will not be easily found in a hurry. Have a prior understanding that protecting life and limb is more important than defending possessions in the sudden adrenalin rush of an intrusion. Computers and phones are intimately entwined with our personal and business lives. While you can't prevent their theft, you can replace them, but their contents are the real valuables that no insurance policy can replace. A regular back-up routine, as laborious as it feels, will offer the relief of knowing that you have not lost the 'memories' and important information on them – and do keep a copy off-site of anything you cannot afford to lose. So, this edition has been a difficult one to put together, but we are very happy we have managed to get it out on time. I hope you enjoy it.

PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WIN GOLD AT SCIENCE EXPO! Two science investigators from the Red School showed that primary school students can also make their mark at the Eskom Expo for young scientists. Tarawen Corfield and Zara NijzinkLaurie, both in Grade 7, each won gold for their projects. Zara’s project, was entitled “Informed Va cc i n a t i o n? Awareness of HPV and Cervical Cancer amongst Grade 4 Girls”, looked at how informed pupils and their parents are about the government’s Human Papilloma Virus vaccination campaign. She showed that the government needs to rethink its information strategies. Tarawen’s project compared weather service predictions and asked “Weather watch: how accurate are the Cape Town weather forecasts?” She concluded that there is a lot of variation in the accuracy of the forecasts and that no one station was consistently better; the science of forecasting still needs improvement.

They did a three-hour hike to an amazing waterfall in the valley, followed later by a lesson on how to set and light a fire with only one match, braaied their own food and made stokbrood with varying success. On 7 October 2016 the Community Schemes Ombud Service (CSOS) Act came into force. This provides a mechanism to deal with problematic cases that could not be dealt with effectively by the industry itself and helps significantly with complaints submitted by sectional title owners. Whilst CSOS is widely welcomed by the industry, it comes at a cost in the form of a minor additional levy on each community scheme. These levies are paid quarterly to CSOS and are calculated in proportion to each owner’s monthly levy. Eg: If the monthly levy is R1 500pm then the CSOS levy would be R20. There is also a small fee of R50 for cases submitted to the CSOS and an adjudication fee of R100. Owners with incomes under R5 500 per month are exempt. Owners and management of sectional title schemes, share block companies, home or property owners associations, housing schemes for retired persons and housing co-operatives are strongly advised to become fully acquainted with their Sectional Title and CSOS regulations. THE TRADITIONAL PLEASANT PLACE PICNIC IN THE PARK

CANNONS CREEK 2016 MATRIC VALEDICTORY

Pleasant place triangular park with three road signs stating Pleasant Place can have new comers in a bit of a tiz. The picnic in the park is a tradition, where neighbours get together, to enjoy the warmer weather and appreciate the various colourful flowers, and spend some quality time chatting and catching up with what has been happening in and around Pleasant Place. This year a young couple, Jess & Dean Kietzmann were welcomed to the area. At the same time the residents celebrated the longest Pleasant Place resident, Mr J Du Toit, who has been in his house since 1947! Another tree has been planted in the park, which is a bit of a mystery to Pleasant Place residents. Is it possible that it has been planted as a memorial?

The guest of honour at the Valedictory ceremony held on 13 October was Past Pupil Che Moshesh who was Deputy Head Prefect in 2012. Che is currently in his fourth year of medicine at Wits. The schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top awards were made to Nadia Arend who is the school Dux of 2016 with an aggregate of 93.6%, and the Principal's Honour Award went to Matthew Archer. This award is one that seeks to recognise the grade 12 pupil who has displayed characteristics of leadership, loyalty and courtesy; and who has by her or his example, personified the spirit and ideals of Cannons Creek. Long time Pinelander Patty Sides has expanded on an idea that helps rural communities conquer the high costs of building by using the "ecobrick" to build homes and schools. The idea which originated in Guatemala is now being used in South Africa with great success. Plastic 2 litre bottles are filled with dry, clean non recyclable plastic waste, which is compressed into the bottle (Patty uses a thick dowelling rod for the job). When the bottle is full and tightly packed, one can stand on it without the bottle collapsing. Currently Patty Sides, of the Brown and Annie Lawrence Home, and Joan Pienaar and Norma Christopher of the Helen Keller Society are making bottle bricks to be used for a school building project in Delft. Anyone wanting to contribute can drop their plastic packed bottles at the Montebello Design Centre shop. The bottles are collected from here by the Ecobrick Exchange. Patty believes the project can be done by young and old – it is great occupational therapy, eco-friendly and a wonderful way to help others. WENDY'S GREAT LOVE FOR ANIMALS & BIRDS can’t have her own pet. Originally from England, Wendy came to South Africa in 1940 as a young girl, with her mom and older sister in order to escape the war. They came on the last voyage of the Winchester Castle before it became a troop carrier. Her Grandad Biggs, in the black and white photo (see below), was a vet in England and used to go out after the air raids looking for injured animals to help. DON’T BLOW YOUR BONUS By Sue Torr

Director at Crue Invest Before your year-end bonus lands in your bank account, give some careful thought as to how you intend to use it. Your shortterm decisions can have lasting effects on your 2017 financial health, and our advice is to be prudent about allocating your bonus or thirteenth cheque. Regardless of the size of your bonus, here are some smart ways to make your extra money work for you: • SPOIL YOURSELF Having some form of personal reward for one’s hard work helps one to stay positive and focused. Whether you choose to spoil yourself with a material purchase or an experience, set aside some money as a personal reward for hard work performed throughout the year. Be kind to yourself. •

MAXIMISE YOUR RETIREMENT ANNUITY CONTRIBUTION

Legislation has recently changed to allow employees to invest up to 27.5% of their income towards a retirement annuity on a tax-free basis. Being able to invest with pretax money is a significant benefit that can make a huge difference to your retirement funding. We encourage all investors to maximise their RA contributions before the end of the tax year in February 2017. If you haven’t maximised your RA contributions, it would be wise to set aside some of your bonus to boost your retirement savings. • SETTLE UNSECURED DEBT Besides high interest rates, having unsecured debt has the potential to keep you awake at night. While certain debt is inevitable, and often necessary, it is highly advisable to channel some of your bonus towards settling debt such as credit card debt, retail accounts and personal loans. • CREATE AN EMERGENCY FUND There is nothing quite like a broken stove or sick pet to make one appreciate an emergency fund. Although there is nothing exciting about ‘putting money away for a rainy day’, it is a decision that your future self will undoubtedly thank you for. • PAY FOR ANNUAL UPFRONT EXPENSES Service providers offer discounted fees if accounts are paid annually upfront. From experience, many schools, clubs and gyms provide significant discounts if fees are paid in January for the entire year. Although one

might baulk at the idea of paying a huge upfront instalment, especially in a month of higher expenses than normal, your monthly financial commitments for next year will be significantly reduced, making next year’s financial demands a little easier. • CONTEMPLATE THE YEAR AHEAD In the headiness and excitement of the festive season, it is easy to forget future financial commitments such as school tours, new vehicle tyres and high-cost items such as orthodontic work. Before committing too much of your bonus to festive season frivolities, make a list of next year’s expenses and give careful consideration as to how they will be funded. • INVEST IN YOURSELF Warren Buffett once said, “The best investment you will ever make is in yourself”. If possible, use part of your bonus on your own personal development. Pay for a photographic course, register for online study, join a gym or running club, or register to learn another language. Personal fulfilment is essential to happiness, and any money channelled in this direction is well spent. • PUT MONEY INTO YOUR BOND OR CAR Putting part (or all) of your bonus into your home loan will have the welcome effect of reducing the overall interest that you pay in the long term. Any extra money you inject into your home loan immediately reduces the capital balance and saves you interest. As an extra benefit, this can also protect you against future rate hikes. • TAX-FREE SAVINGS ACCOUNT (TFSA) A TFSA allows you to invest up to R30 000 per year into a tax-free savings account up to a maximum life-time amount of R500 000. Investors do not pay tax on any interest or dividends earned by the investment and no CGT is paid on withdrawal. 

Pinelands North Primary’s biennial school play opened to packed houses in September, when the entire school rolled up their sleeves and got their jive on, for a colourful and liveley production called “Under African Skies”. This modern comedy of errors, was written and created to suit the school’s progressive and inclusive style by staff member, Suzi Cinderey. Grades 1-7 entertained with colourful dances, which were woven together by a mischievous comedy, featuring a group of teenaged misfits. The group try to plan a send-off for a parting friend, in the form of an epic camp-out and find themselves biting off more than they can chew. Teachers took to the stage, dancing to Jimmy Nevis’s 7764 and a group of dancing parents did their bit, proving that Pinelands North Primary School is a true community school. Even the Principal, Ann Morton’s puppy, Peroni, had a cameo role in the final scene which delighted audiences and added to the fun. Colourful costumes, crazy antics and a groovy sound track made the production an event to remember. Bravo Pinelands North!

The beautiful Greenpoint Park under the watchful eye of Signal Hill has large waterways, a watermill and plenty of walkways. Everything has grown since the Muse visited the park in September 2011. Trees are taller, hedges thicker; indigenous plants and ground cover are all flourishing. The metal gazebos are covered with pretty creepers giving welcome shade. The park is well supported – Mum's with babies, small children on the jungle gyms or paddling in the rocky streams; people walking their dogs – a lovely open space to escape the frenetic pace of City Life. INCREASING POPULARITY AS A SPORT

There had been a few years leading up to this moment. Kailen, having successfully attended the competition the year before as a junior, knew what we were in for. To qualify, we had competed in the Cape Classic, and then the annual NMA/ISKA National Destiny Tournament. Sport fighting is on the rise, and with over 1 000 competitors, and thousands of spectators, it’s always a great tournament to take part in. Kailen and I both took gold in our divisions and qualified for the team to go to the ISKA US Open World Championships, where over 40 countries from six continents compete. Below left: Bryant Park.

THREE YEARS OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

Three years earlier, my son and I took up martial arts training under Sensei Lutcin, at the Pinelands branch of Paul Caves Mixed Martial Arts academy. My son gravitated towards the more traditional training karate offers, while I enjoyed the varied styles and sparring of Mixed Martial Arts. As Kailen and I joined the dojo at a similar time, and were similar builds (although back then he was 17 and I was 34), we found ourselves sparring with one another more often than not. He is a fantastic fighter, mature beyond his years, strong and fast.

IT'S NOW OR NEVER

Having a young family, work commitments, and a bond to pay, I had made the team, but not managed to get it together to go on tour in 2015. My wife pushed me to go this year, and with looming age, a bad back and shoulder, I felt it might be now or never. With the help of my generous partners at Skysite Rope Access, and some assistance from Future Life foods, I was set to go.

AMAZING NEW YORK ARCHITECTURE

As I have spent most of my working life focused on high rise buildings, arriving in New York was really special for me, and I was immediately struck by how beautiful the city and architecture is. We checked in at the Salisbury Hotel on 57th, one block from Central Park, where we ran every morning, and saw the memorial to John Lennon at Strawberry Lane; the Alice in Wonderland sculptures. Kailen and I even managed to sneak into a Blink 182 Concert in the Park at 8:30 in the morning! After our runs we stocked up on calories, with a healthy hotel breakfast.

Blood dripping from my nose, my heart pounding, and barely able to open my left eye, I hear Kailen say “Just one more fight and you are a champion”. Pinelanders Simon Hareb and Kailen Niadoo have a great story to tell about the 2016 Mixed Martial Arts ISKA US Open World Championships held in New York in June this year.

PINELANDERS SIGHTSEEING GALORE!

I was fortunate to have an old school friend living in NY, who took time off to show a few of us around. Over the next few days we visited the Ground Zero Memorial, Central Park, 5th Avenue, Broadway, Grand Central Station; watched a game of baseball at The Yankee Stadium in The Bronx – with the world’s largest soft drink cups; visited The Natural History Museum, Wall Street, Times Square at midnight, Grimaldis Pizzeria – famously known as a mafia restaurant frequented by Frank Sinatra; we walked Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan, the Rockefeller Centre and took the ferry to Staten Island.

MY FAVOURITE PLACES

Two of the highlights for me were Bryant Park and the Highline. Bryant Park is in the heart of NY, and it was great to see people relaxing in nature, in the middle of the city. Musicians played for the public in the well kept gardens. The High Line is an old raised train line that has been transformed into a walkway with flower planters, grass patches to relax on, art installations and sculptures along the way. It runs from Midtown to the now very sought after “meat packing district”. It really is a unique, well kept city and I loved every moment there.

THE COMPETITION - PREPARATION

From NY we headed to Orlando, Florida, where we were hit by the humid heat. Fortunately our resort had a massive pool area, a gym and meeting rooms large enough for our team meetings. A few of us went to Disney World to see the 4th of July fireworks, taking a cab to the Boardwalk, and then ferries to get the best view of the firework displays. It was a beautiful warm evening and we watched the children line dancing on the grass to “candy techno”. Not to be outdone, nature produced thunder and lightning that evening that was more impressive than the thousands of kilograms of gunpowder that must have been exploded that night!

November 2016 | the muse | 15 PRE-FIGHT NERVES AS FIGHT DAY DAWNS

After a pre-tournament briefing, well wishes from Kancho Paul Cave and the South African management team, the big day finally arrived. I hadn’t slept much, and when I saw the level of skill and contact the juniors were competing at, just getting into the ring became a mental challenge. I suspect though, that these pre-fight nerves are the allure of the sport that keeps many of us coming back for more. There were a few worrying moments, when a junior member of our team was rushed off to hospital after being knocked unconscious. Happily he was back on his feet the next morning.

The South African team management was amazing, and after a visit to the emergency room, I was given the all clear to continue Lamprecht-M5-047.indd 1 18/03/201 fighting. I managed to get a third place in the points fighting and another gold in clash sparring. Kailen also took home gold in the 20-30 year categories for sparring and points fighting and dominated his division GENERAL PRACTITIONERS for stand up fighting. Team South Africa did very well and was noted as the team to beat. The level of point fighting and forms was unbelievable and we saw the best in the world in their various divisions.

On the flight home I mused that the harder the challenge is, mentally or physically, if you just face your fears and, like Guns 'n Roses taunted, just “Get in the ring”, you have already won. The results from there are not important. As corny as it sounds, as long as you know you gave it your best, you will always be able to look back on that challenge with pride. I am very fortunate to have a family and colleagues who supported me enough to allow me to experience this challenge. I had some unforgettable experiences and met some great people along the way. 

PRINCIPAL'S ARTICLE

Last week, along with thousands of other schools across the country, we said goodbye to our Grade 12 class of 2016. Our boys and girls were sent out with many good wishes and accolades. We were very sad to see them go, as they took with them such a wealth of talent and experience.

LEAVING THE HARBOUR… At the same time as feeling sad, we had a sense of trepidation – the same sort of trepidation we might feel when we say goodbye to a vessel full of friends leaving the safety of a harbour and heading into stormy waters.

AN UNCERTAIN WORLD

School leavers are moving into an uncertain world: the stability of tertiary education is no longer guaranteed, unemployment is rife, there is political instability, and there are enormous social pressures and demands on young people. Is this a pessimistic view of this critical juncture in the lives of school leaving students? If we believe that they cannot manage this uncertainty and instability, then the answer is yes. The answer is no if we believe that schools can and have equipped students with strong core values

and have attempted to anticipate, in some positive way, the threats beyond our collective gates.

FORWARD-THINKING AND OPEN-MINDED If we are helping to produce young people who are going to thrive in an uncertain world, then schools need to be openminded, inclusive, diverse and forwardthinking organisations.

BEACONS OF HOPE IN A TROUBLED SOCIETY Schools can be beacons of hope in a troubled society, and this hope can suffuse the minds and beings of young people. Schools have the power, through positive role-modeling, healthy conflict management, open dialogue and strong moral codes, to create environments where young people are able to be equipped to navigate in a rapidly-changing world.

SOME OF THESE ELEMENTS AND APPROACHES MAY BE OF ASSISTANCE IN EQUIPPING SCHOOL-LEAVERS:

• a focus on the celebration of difference and the importance of diversity; • the mentoring of young leaders who are taught to manage themselves and others in a diverse and challenging environment; • the encouragement of critical thought and debate which assists young people to find their voices; • an emphasis on understanding and reducing the impact of our carbon footprint; • the vital role that collaboration plays in everyday life; • the use of excellence as a touchstone – academically and in all spheres; • the importance of hope and positive thought.

FROM SECURITY TO UNCERTAINTY AND BACK AGAIN

We should not aim to create complacent young people who, because of the security of their environment, may find that the transition to an unpredictable adult life is a difficult one. Rather, school life as described above should be interlaced with challenge and some unpredictability, so that failure and learning from failure are experienced. In these ways, our young people learn the value of hard work, positive engagement, problem solving, and the turning of adversity into opportunity. 
