MILESTONES ARE REACHED WITH PERSISTENCE This month we have quite a few articles on achievements and milestones reached by various people and institutions. When hearing the stories behind the milestones though, there is usually a common theme – those achievements did not happen effortlessly with the passing of time. Inevitably, there were many difficult and seemingly hopeless times when setbacks and barriers could well have ended the enterprise, but for the firm belief of the people behind it, their determination to carry on and the persistence to keep looking for a solution until one was found. Calvin Coolidge made this observation back in the 1930's: “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence… not talent, not genius nor education. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Necessity may be the mother of invention, but persistence and determination are its midwives. Often, a great new idea never gets the chance to take root unless it has a strong willed champion to clear its path. This is probably because ‘a good thing’ is often only recognised as such much later, when it has had a chance to work. When first presented it probably appears crazy as it threatens the status quo and defies established logic, which makes most of us uncomfortable and therefore resistant. Albert Einstein, who introduced us to some of the weird nature of our universe, said: “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” He was apparently not an exceptionally bright student… but he had the curiosity and determination to work on a problem until he understood it and was led to the solution, however strange it might be. Swee Waxbill This small, colourful bird is commonly seen in the suburbs of Cape Town. Their call is a soft whistling “swee-swee” from which they get their name. They are primarily seed-eating birds often attracted to birdfeeders. Unlike their cousin, the Common Waxbill, which also occurs in the city, they sport strongly contrasting colours, with an olive-green back, a bright red rump and a black tail. Even their bills are a sharp black and red. The males have got a grey head with a black throat while the females' heads are plain grey. They are most often found in gardens and forest edges, whereas Common Waxbills are more often associated with scrubby vegetation and reeds. Image: Glynnis Schutte. Text: Jessleena Suri, UCT PhD student looking at the impact of urbanisation on birds. This month Jess and regular writer of this feature, Dr. Callan Cohen, are heading to Israel to compete in the Champions of the Flyway – an international event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the protection of migratory birds. HOME IS OUR STORY
Realistic pricing a key factor for serious sellers and landlords While there is still plenty of demand for properties in Thornton and Pinelands, there is increased competition for sellers with more properties coming on the market and the buyer’s appetite for homes above R4m starting to wane. The average house price in Pinelands and Thornton remains flat at around R2.9m and R1.5m respectively. If you consider the recent sales and registrations stats for the past 12 months, as reported by Lightstone, there have been 282 recorded sales in Pinelands and Thornton whilst in the past three months there have only been 33 registrations. This may be seasonal though?
The rental market under R10 000 pm has continued unabated with demand far outstripping supply. Rentals above R18 000 pm have however slowed down with fewer qualified enquiries. Our rental portfolio continues to perform well with 87% of our tenants paying on time, and the balance by the 7th of every month. The property market is still a good place to be in.
Home is our Story… so be sure to start your next chapter with us.

The Cannons Creek Independent School assembly on February 17th celebrated the 20th anniversary of the school's inception in 1997. After the Bible reading done by the Cannons Creek High School Principal, Mike van Haght, there was an informative and humorous slide show presented by retired teacher Hazelmay Duncan and Primary School Principal Carol Booth. The presentation kicked off with pictures of the first classes held in the Pinelands Hall, where the 'classrooms' were demarcated with masking tape and imaginary doors. Classes were small and it was not unusual to decide to go on an outing on the spur of the moment - in the trusty school combi, which also doubled as the school office. From seeing the snow in Ceres, to the beach to witness a stranded sea elephant was all part of a well rounded education.

There was a weekly walk to Pinelands Library, a train trip to Simonstown, a trip in a light aircraft for the grade 7's, a climb up Greenpoint Lighthouse, farm visits and many more including visits to the retirement homes. Many of the outings established in the early days have become traditional and are still done today. Over the 20 year period the school has grown to include a High School and preprimary, a modern cultural centre with music rooms, and sports fields. Staff and children have grown in number - and one former pupil is now a teacher - Kelsey Whiting. Congratulations to Cannons Creek Independent School and their pioneer teachers! GARDEN CITIES DEVELOP CANINE LEISURE CENTRE LEADVILLE DOG PARK IN SUNNINGDALE The construction of the first Garden City in South Africa Pinelands, began in 1919 by the newly established Garden Cities Trust, which still operates today along with the Pinelands Development company building suburbs according to the original ethos and ideas of Ebenezer Howard who strived to solve the problem of Urban overcrowding by incorporating open spaces into community suburbs. The corporate investment arm of the not for profit Garden Cities, builds school halls for the children in the Western Cape from historically disadvantaged areas. Recently the Garden Cities one hectare project Leadville Dog Park in Sunningdale opened, with safe fenced off areas for small and larger dogs, trees, grass, water fountains, a coffee shop, a vet-owned shop a canine behaviourist, and a grooming service. In the future the dog park will tie into the green belt that meanders through the housing development for longer dog walks. When you are in the area visit the dog park in Leadville Way, just off Braselton Road in Sunningdale. Take your favourite pooch for a walk and some dog / people socialising.

Champions of the Flyway is an annual international birding race hosted by BirdLife International in Eilat, Israel, dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the protection of migratory birds along their Mediterranean flyways. On March 28, several teams from around the world compete to see the most bird species within 24 hours also competing to raise the most funds for conservation. Every year over 25 million birds are killed for sport and food along their migration routes. Over $180,000 has been raised to aid conservation projects in the worst-affected areas, such as Malta, Greece, Cyprus and Georgia. This year, proceeds go towards projects in Turkey to convert young hunters into bird-watchers ensuring that migrants can pass safely through the country. Two South African teams are taking part, the Birding Africa Black Harriers and a youth team, the Birding Ecotours Youth Africa Birders. For more about the teams or to donate to one of them, visit www.champions-of-the-flyway.com.

GRACE PRIMARY SCHOOL CELEBRATES PHASE ONE On the morning of Wednesday 25 January, Grace Primary School in Protea Close, Pinelands held an official opening of the first phase of their newly-built premises. Over 80 guests attended the event, including Nazli Domingo-Salie, Deputy Chief Education Specialist at the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). Guests were given a tour of the new school facilities, which include 5 classrooms, and staff, music and administration rooms, and witnessed the cutting of the ribbon by Molly de Witt and Chloe McComb, daughters of the two founding couples, both from Pinelands. Chris de Witt, Chairman of the Board of Governors, shared some of the story of the school, celebrating God’s work and the work of many hands in making this flourishing project possible. Miss Mabel Laubscher, school principal, added a few words of encouragement and praise, not least to all the parents who have shown courage enrolling their children in such a pioneering venture. The building was constructed in only 6 months by UFCC using their Solid Wall System. Everyone agreed that the result is a beautiful new home for all the children of Grace Primary.

Drive down the M4 (Main Road) to Bergvliet and turn into Sol Cohen Road. At number 4, practically on the corner, you will find the Backyard Café. At first you may think you have arrived at a furniture store - and well - you have - as the original building still houses the furniture business built up by the Harding Family. In 2012 Nikki Harding and friend Ashlea started the café in the pretty garden under shady trees surrounded by birds and an assortment of interesting garden furniture (even an outside wrought iron bed to lounge on!) With friends Reggie and Richard we enjoyed an assortment of breakfast options - filled croissants, delicious flapjacks and the treehouse breakfast with fresh orange juice and good coffee. See their website for all catering options. The service was good and the staff friendly - a lovely Saturday morning breakfast. Then afterwards, take a look at the furniture store! TAKING STOCK AFTER STUDENT PROTESTS
The student protests across the country over the past two years and the spill down to schools have raised a much deeper, more profound understanding of the pain of the past and how discriminatory practices 11:09 AM continue to be perpetuated in society, and not least in educational institutions. Whatever people’s feelings may be about the nature of the protests, the debate that they have engendered has caused many people involved in education to look inwards in order to ask questions such as:
by Dave Campbell Principal Pinelands High School
• Are all of our approaches, customs and practices free from bias? • Are we truly inclusive in the widest possible sense of the word? • Are we providing an education which is equal in opportunity for all of the young people who attend our schools? • Have we moved beyond simply saying “this is the way in which we do things” to “we do things here together, in a way which has a common goal, in a way which is sensitive to the backgrounds, cultures, the lived experiences of all of us in the community”?

EDUCATION & CHILDCARE TRULY INCLUSIVE EDUCATION
It is in the questions themselves that the answers are found. If we are asking ourselves these types of questions then we have taken the first steps towards opening our minds to another way of practicing education – a way that is truly inclusive. We have opened our minds in order to listen and to learn.
FREE FROM ANY BIAS
We need to ensure that the curriculum and its delivery are free from the social and cultural bias which formed part of the South African educational approach for so many years under apartheid. Similarly, we need to ensure that new forms of bias do not replace old forms.

SPECIAL FEATURE
GLOBAL AND AFRICAN PERSPECTIVE
Whilst we have a new, modern and uniquely South African curriculum in place, there are elements of it which are not free from cultural bias. Some will argue that the curriculum is fixed and is not flexible. This is not so. There is always room to examine what we do, to place emphasis on certain areas, to look for the sub-texts and the hidden. There is room to ensure that the language setworks we choose, the textbook choices we make, the examples we use in the classroom and in examinations, the images and posters we display, the discussions we engender – there is room to ensure that we provide both a global and an African perspective – in so doing moving away from a primarily European, British or even American centredness.
THE MESSAGE: EVERYONE MATTERS HERE
What about the co-curricular and extracurricular programmes? Do we ensure that the opportunities that we provide, and the hidden curriculum that underpins what we do are as free from cultural, social and economic bias as possible? Do the dramatic productions we stage, the sports and cultural activities we offer, our assemblies and social events – do these and more send out the message: everyone matters here – all cultures, religions, abilities, socioeconomic backgrounds and more.
COMMITMENT TO YOUTH EDUCATION
Our schools should have a vision of a future which is inclusive, free from bias and committed to developing young people who will make real and significant contributions to South Africa – despite the increasing complexities in society.

Ann Morton has certainly made the Red School shine. Pinelands North pupils excel in academics, in art, as allrounders at high school and as citizens of South Africa, with careers in every facet of life. As of the end of last year, Ann has been at the school for twenty years, having taken over from Pinelands’ resident, Bob Shepherd, who also ran the school for twenty years before her. She says, however, that she isn’t planning on leaving until she is forced to retire, as she still has so much work to do - Red Roots Pre-Primary opened its doors in January this year and this project kept her very busy all last year. Ann adds, “Because I am hyperactive, I love projects like this. I have a few more up my sleeve for the final eight years of my term at Pinelands North!” To celebrate her 20 years at the school, the Governing Body introduced Long Service Awards for the staff. This function, to celebrate all the staff who have helped create the ‘sparkle and shine’ for the Red School over the years, was held in October last year, two days after the school’s 68th birthday.

TECHNICAL EDUCATION WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A GOOD TECHNICAL SCHOOL
Technology is the application of science to solve problems. The curriculum in a good technical school will develop problem-solvers with a can-do approach to life. Quality education in Mathematics and Physical Sciences or Technical Maths and Technical Science and Engineering Graphics and Design for the Grade 12 National Senior Certificate should be expected, along with an holistic education including cultural, sport and club activities building leadership qualities, which are essential for successful workshop management and budgeting for resources.

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION FOR CRUE INVEST Crue Invest joined an elite group when it was recognised by the Financial Planning Institute as an FPI Approved Professional Practice™ – one of only eleven financial planning practices in SA to receive this prestigious recognition.
Fee-based financial planning advice By Sue Torr
Managing Director at Crue Invest
FEES FOR PROFESSIONAL ADVICE
Fee-based financial planning practices made their appearance within the last fifteen years. Charging a professional fee for financial planning advice has gained momentum, and now a handful of niche financial planning practices nationwide are remunerated a professional fee, akin to tax practitioners, attorneys and accountants.
BUILDING PARTNER CLIENT TRUST
In general, fee-based advisors charge a flat-fee, agreed to upfront, for the preparation of a comprehensive financial plan which covers all aspects of a client’s portfolio, including retirement planning, investments, risk cover, estate planning and tax. Thereafter, the advisor is remunerated a percentage of assets under advice, with the emphasis being on comprehensive wealth management. It goes without saying that a fee-based structure is a better environment to cultivate planner-client trust. It is inevitable that commissionbased advisors are faced with an inherent conflict of interest between providing the most appropriate advice and the fact that a significant part of their income comes from product sales.
CLIENT FOR LIFE RELATIONSHIP
Advisors in a fee-based financial planning practice, do not accept fees or compensation based on product sales. Truly independent practices will have no affiliation with any insurance company or product house, reducing the potential for biased advice or conflicts of interest to arise. Whereas commission can pull an advisor in a different direction than working for a client, fee-based advisors receive the same remuneration regardless of the nature of their advice. However, the nature of a fee-based advisor’s remuneration structure, being a percentage of assets under advice, provides the advisor with a natural incentive to develop a long-term
March 2017 | the muse | 13
relationship with the client, and to ensure that the client’s wealth accumulates over time in accordance with his investment goals. Building a client-for-life relationship is the cornerstone of a fee-based practice.
FEE BASED VERSUS COMMISSION
While many commission-based agents or advisors are tied to a specific product or product house, independent fee-based advisors are free to provide advice and recommendations covering the full range of financial products available in the market place. To ensure fiercely independent advice in the client’s best interests, feebased advisors should constantly research the market for the most cost-effective and innovative solutions.
COMPREHENSIVE FINANCIAL SERVICES
Depth of expertise is an integral part of a fee-based practice as this ensures that a client can engage on the full range of financial, legal and tax issues pertaining to his portfolio, without having to seek piecemeal advice from alternative sources. The primary fee of a fee-based practice is designed to cover all the costs of managing a client’s financial affairs. The fees include ongoing advice on estate structuring, tax planning, trusts, risk protection and comprehensive annual reviews, with clients enjoying ongoing access to their team of experts with no additional charges.
This accreditation follows a stringent audit of the business by the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa, and confirms that the business meets the highest ethical standards in pursuance of the profession. The accreditation recognises Crue Invest’s exceptional standards in terms of knowledge, expertise and ethical conduct, and reinforces the robustness of the company’s business processes and quality assurance. Holding the FPI Approved Professional Practice™ badge of honour makes it easier for consumers to identify financial planning practices that adhere to the pinnacle of global professionalism. Important criteria to qualify for this highest badge of honour included staff expertise and qualifications, commitment to staff development, business succession planning, financial solvency and a sound investment philosophy. Crue Invest was also commended for its pro bono work and social upliftment programme, and will be required to act as a mentorship centre to raise the standard of financial planning in South Africa. Crue Invest (Pty) Ltd, founded by Sue and Craig Torr in 2004, is owned and managed by a team of legal, financial and tax experts, all of whom are shareholders in the business.
CRUE INVEST’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
CONTINUOUS SUPPORT
A fee-based advisor should also act as an essential sounding board for all financial decisions, playing the role of financial mentor, guide and financial touchstone. The role of a fee-based advisor in guiding a client through the emotional aspects of money and investing cannot be underplayed, especially in our volatile political and economic environment.
SAFE ENVIRONMENT - MUTUAL TRUST
Most fee-based practices avoid charging hourly rates as they do not wish to discourage clients from contacting them for advice. Access to one’s fee-based advisor should be automatic and ongoing, and clients should not think twice before making contact with their advisor. Being remunerated on a fee basis means an advisor is able to offer a truly objective second opinion, while providing the client with confidence that no monetary compensation is influencing the advice. With the success of a fee-based advisor being directly linked to the financial success of his client, an inherent incentive exists to provide the highest calibre of unfettered advice in a transparent environment of mutual trust.

PINELANDERS COMMUNITY NEWS
CAROL BOOTH Primary School Principal at Cannons Creek Independent School, Carol Booth is a founder with a "can do" attitude that spills over to the three passions she holds dear in life - school, family and friends, and sailing. Carol shares the inspiring journey of Cannons Creek's first 20 years.
A DREAM TO START A SCHOOL
Carol came to Pinelands as a young teacher to do her student practical. She enjoyed the suburb and the community spirit and took a post at the Blue School where classes were never larger than 18 children. Sports mad, she had a dream of starting a sports school filled with the best equipment in town! When the model C system was introduced and classes became very large, Carol looked for many ways to manage the education of the children, but in the end the only option seemed to be to start her own school with small classes and top notch teaching.
THE HUNT FOR A SUITABLE PROPERTY
After struggling with a business plan, taking some hints from another independent school opening in Cape Town, and raising the necessary funding, Carol, along with friend and fellow teacher Hazelmay Duncan,
www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za
set about hunting for a property for the school. Excited at finding a large house that could cater for their prospective primary school classes, they set about negotiating with the Brooke family, who owned the property in Riverside. The Brookes came from a farm in Australia called Cannons Creek - and the name was subsequently adopted for the new school. In the end, the property sale didn't materialise as one of the neighbours objected to having a school next door - so the hunt was on again.
FROM CLUB HALL TO LAND OWNERSHIP
There was a nail-biting period before moving into the Pinelands Club Hall for their first classes in 1997 as they waited anxiously for the rezoning of the property for school purposes. The go-ahead was given just four days before classes were to begin - with 37 children and five teachers - Carol Barhouch, (now Carol Booth), Hazelmay Duncan, Nicola du Plooy, Lesley Jacobson and Kevin Wroth. Cannons Creek now proudly stands on its own ground with 410 children, 59 staff, and a silent discipline built on respect, kindness, helpfulness, teamwork - and a good dose of humour. Classes are never larger than 16 children per class, and twenty children in the High School. At the end of the year Carol will be passing the responsibility of Primary School Principal on to her successor, and
returning to her first love - teaching (grade 5) - until her formal retirement. "Starting the school taught me so much about business plans, accounting, perseverance and the beautiful generosity of people - especially the kindness shown by Pinelands residents with donations of equipment, time and funding.
SAILING
"I love sailing and enjoy racing. This sport is all encompassing - 3 dimensional - with the sailor having to have the knowledge of how to handle the yacht, how to react to the water and the weather - to be in charge and become one with the environment. I have spent the last 20 years racing at Royal Cape Yacht Club and we even had our own 34ft racing yacht. We enjoy going to Theewaterskloof Dam to sail our 24ft J - it is particularly sad right now with the dam level so incredibly low with the drought. Cannons Creek has its own yacht club too - once again with no fixed abode or dam - but we manage! I have never believed in saying "I can't", but sometimes I have to be patient and say "I can't...YET".
NEW LIFE IN THE FAMILY The Muse congratulates Carol on her achievements and wishes her well for the future, especially as she enjoys the pleasures of having a new grandchild. 

GOOD EDUCATION IN SMALL CLASSES
Cannons Creek Independent School has grown from its small beginnings in the hall of the Pinelands Club, twenty years ago, to a fully equipped Primary and High School in Nursery Way, with sports fields and a modern cultural centre. Carol Booth is the Pinelander who took the brave step of following her convictions for providing good education in small classes with individual attention for each child.

Claudette Schreuders with eleven year old daughter, Anna, and 'the work in progress ' wood sculpture.
Artist Claudette Schreuders creator of the four bronze statues at Nobel Square at the V&A Waterfront, featuring esteemed Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, speaks to the Muse about her work and the steep learning curve she followed when awarded the task of making the statues which were completed in 2005. A highlight of the experience was meeting the laureates Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, FW De Klerk and the family of the late Albert Luthuli.
CLAUDETTE SCHREUDERS
MOVING TO CAPE TOWN AND DOING RESIDENCIES IN MANY CITIES
Claudette grew up in Johannesburg and feels it was a "lucky mistake" that she came to Stellenbosch University to study art - loving every minute of it and always grateful that her parents allowed her to follow her heart. Carving 'portraits' out of wood is not easy and Claudette stresses that it is the energy you put in that increases your success at what you get out of it. After Stellenbosch, Claudette did her masters at UCT. Luckily it was at a time when South Africa was being accepted into the international community again, and art galleries world wide were looking at South African artists. Claudette has done residencies in London, Nigeria, San Diego and in New York, where she has developed long term relationships with art galleries exhibiting her work. Her wood carvings are influenced by West African colon figures (colonial period); and expressive religious artworks. "Doing a residency in another country lets you see your place of origin more clearly - with different eyes."
March 2017 | the muse | 15
CHOSEN TO HONOUR NOBEL LAUREATES
When the invitation arrived to be considered for the production of the bronze statues at the waterfront, Claudette realised this would be a huge challenge as she had not worked in bronze with such larger-thanlife statues for a public place. Competing against other well accomplished artists she prepared the maquettes for examination by the selection panel. It took 18 months to go through the extremely labour intensive task of making the four larger than life size figures in bronze. It is a multistep process starting with a rough carving of a piece of styrofoam which is then coated in plaster, which is carved and sanded. From there it is taken to the foundry where it is cast in wax, a bit like an Easter egg - hollow on the inside. This is then cut into smaller pieces and dipped into a ceramic glaze. The molten bronze is poured into the ceramic mould - this melts out the wax, and the bronze pieces are welded together again. Nobel Square at the waterfront is the ideal setting for the statues, with the mighty Table Mountain in the background.
LITHOGRAPHS AS A PERMANENT RECORD
Since the creation of the Nobel Laureate sculptures, Claudette has done a few more bronze works of her own, using the foundry in Kalk Bay - and shows me how one such bronze statue is decorated with colour from heating the bronze to different temperatures (patination not painting). She remembers too, how difficult it was to part with her first wood sculpture having
to realise that if this was to be her career, she could not keep all her work! Hence the record of her sculptures in the lithographs. These are also formed through a complex process, where Claudette works with the Artists' Press in Mpumalanga where the lithographs are made.
LOVING LIFE IN PINELANDS
Claudette has lived with her family in Pinelands for 8 years and loves the wealth of trees, good neighbours, the feeling of space and the fact that there are many talented artists living in our leafy suburb. Her garden is home to many birds (although not as many as in Johannesburg); and her beagle has become accustomed to the chickens in the garden. They are also blessed with four families of chameleons. Happily Claudette's mother and sister have moved to Pinelands and they enjoy cycling together and visiting often as they live close by.
THE SATISFACTION OF CREATING ART
Claudette loved to draw as a child and feels that all children with a small amount of guidance and encouragement in how to perceive the world around them, can also be good artists. She feels that her own children draw very well. Anyone thinking of becoming a wood sculptor has to remember that it is hard physical work requiring heavy lifting, work with power tools including a chain saw, and many very sharp chisels. "Although it is a dusty and tiring job - the satisfaction of making something, with your own hands is unsurpassed." 

WORK FROM HOME STUDIO
Claudette's studio in Pinelands is neatly divided between the wood sculpting area, where we gaze upon a work in progress of a young girl with flowing hair and pretty dress - about 1.5 metres in height; and the drawing room where Claudette prepares sketches of her artwork for portfolios and lithographs - a permanent record of the sculpture when she no longer has it.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park Text and Images: by Dr Louise Wigens, GP at West End Medical Suite, Mutual Park, Pinelands In November 2016, Rob and I headed off for our first trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Bookings for accommodation were made with San Parks a year in advance, giving us plenty of time to enjoy the anticipation and preparations for the holiday. The distance from Cape Town to Twee Rivieren (the entrance to the park) is 1080 km, so we opted to stay at Augrabies on the way up and overnight at The Overlook in Keimoes on our return.
KGALAGADI TENTED CAMP
On entering the park we refuelled, bought some ice cold refreshments, decreased the tyre pressures to 1.5 and headed toward the Kgalagadi Tented Camp for our first night's sleep. The park essentially has two main roads following the two river beds; on the west the Auob and on the east the Nossob. These are linked at intervals by other roads.
BIG GAME - AND A VEHICLE RESCUE
Within a few minutes of entering the park there were gemsbok and springbok on both sides of the road. Shortly thereafter three lionesses were seen sleeping under a tree, then giraffes and blue wildebeest. About 20 km from Mata Mata we came across two sedan vehicles stuck in the sand. We towed them out and although a 4x4 is not essential for this trip, I would certainly recommend it. If this was our first day I knew it was going to be a great trip!
BECOMING ONE WITH NATURE
There is no cell phone reception or internet connection in the park, so it didn't take long to unwind completely and become one with nature. Temperatures were hot midday, going up to 45 degrees some days, and in the evenings it was impossible to sleep under more than a sheet. We found that a wet kikoi wrapped around us worked wonders keeping us cool.
EXPLORING THE SOUTH AFRICAN SECTION
We decided to try out almost every camp on the South African side of the park during our ten day stay. We loved the un-fenced Wilderness Camps the best of all: Urikaruus, Kielie Krankie, Kgalagadi Tented camp, Grootkolk and Bitterpan. Each camp has its own uniqueness and was fully equipped with fridge, gas plates, crockery, linen and a braai area. Most camps have four cottages - meaning a maximum of eight people in the camp. A camp supervisor was always present in case of the rare occasion when one’s cottage is surrounded by big cats. We had uninterrupted views onto a waterhole with a solar / battery powered spotlight at night. So we had the choice to drive out of the camp to a nearby waterhole or to simply stay at our private space.
AT LEAST TEN LIONS SEEN EVERY DAY
We had many great sightings from our stoep, setting up the camera tripod to capture game strolling past. Mornings we
woke at 4:30am to leave the camp and head to a nearby waterhole. Sometimes we would spend three hours simply watching the abundant bird life, jackals and gemsbok, springbok, wildebeest, ostriches and giraffe as they visited the waterhole before moving on for the day. Leopards were elusive, but we saw more than ten lions most days, and a family of five cheetahs entertained us for hours on our last day.
A GOOD EVENING BRAAI
We took our own food to the park and luckily had a fridge/freezer in our car so our perishables lasted. We had our evening braai down to a fine art, preparing butternut and sweet potatoes for two nights in advance and using just enough coals to cook the vegetables and a few kebabs or a fillet. Being a pyromaniac we took plenty of wood with us for a hearty fire every evening after dinner was done.
THE MAGICAL BEAUTY OF THE RED SANDS OF THE KGALAGADI
Nothing could have prepared me for the beauty and magical appeal of the red sands of the Kgalagadi. The overnight at Kielie Krankie in the middle of the red dunes and the Bitterpan 4x4 trail were exquisite examples of this unique area. Every night the sky lit up with the golden colours of yet another African sunset. I cannot wait to be back in the Kgalagadi, hopefully to explore the Botswana side, in the near future.

FOOD FROM THE HEART By Heleen Meyer
Roasted carrots & sweet potatoes Serves 6 250 g small carrots, whole 250 g medium carrots, peeled and quartered lengthwise 4 small sweet potatoes, skin on, cut into wedges 3 cloves garlic, sliced 45 ml (3 tbsp) olive or avocado oil 10 ml (2 tsp) caraway or cumin seeds 15 ml (1 tbsp) honey or soft brown sugar handful fresh mint leaves 1. Preheat the oven to 200 °C. Place all the ingredients, except the mint, in a large mixing bowl and mix to coat the veggies with oil. 2. Place the veggies on a large baking tray lined with baking paper and roast 3040 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. The time will depend on the size of the veggies. Serve with fresh mint.
Full of flavour Discussions around healthy eating are nothing new and definitely not a fad, but are here to stay. Luckily subscribing to a healthy way of eating does not mean that you have to be on a diet. As a matter of fact, I wish the word diet could be scrapped from the dictionary. A healthy lifestyle is something that should be important to all of us and it is really not difficult. Sometimes it takes that step of making a few important changes, but it’s always worth it. Enjoying a good variety of foods in moderate quantities is a great start. Make home-cooked meals your preference and avoid overly processed and refined foods. Avoiding too much sugar, salt, artificial preservatives and additives is another important part. Now you might say, all's fair and well, but
when it comes to cooking those ingredients, one can easily get stuck with the wrong cooking methods or seasonings, making wholesome ingredients less nutritious. If you concentrate on not overcooking food and then having to ‘rescue’ it with all sorts of pre-prepared sauces, you’ve already made a good choice. Making use of the natural flavour and sweetness of ingredients in combination with natural seasonings is another way to ensure good healthy meals. This side dish of roasted carrots and sweet potatoes with caraway or cumin seeds is quick, easy and perfect with meat, chicken or fish. The roasting process adds to the sweetness of the veggies and just a few fresh mint leaves makes it really special. The same recipe can be used to prepare butternut wedges.
