THE UNEXPECTED REWARDS OF TRAVEL As you will see from the Travellers article on page 16, we slipped in a short holiday with some friends on Mauritius last month. While it left us only half the time to prepare this edition of the Muse, it was a long overdue break which we sorely needed and had looked forward to for a long time. Mauritius is a favourite destination for us as it offers so much variety. I find that there are usually two elements to a holiday – relaxed indulgence on one hand, and discomfort and discovery on the other. These elements may seem at odds with each other, but both bring their own rewards. The safe, traditional holiday chillout lets you unwind from your busy life at home, but it is the challenge of the unfamiliar which really refreshes and re-energises you. As the Roman philosopher Seneca said: “Voyage, travel and change of place impart vigour.” We do enjoy poolside relaxation with friends and an exotic drink as much as the next person. We are also keen to “see the sights” and enjoy organised activities. However, we also try to make a point of setting time apart to allow the unexpected to happen. We like to choose somewhere off the beaten tourist track to visit, with no itinerary or plans, and just let the day lead us to where it will and at its own pace. Often, these days turn out to be the most memorable of the holiday. They have their share of difficulty and discomfort, but more than repay that with unique and personal experiences with the local people and goings-on. These unexpected experiences are what linger strongest in the memory. A final piece of travel advice that I have found to be quite reliable - “When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.” Enjoy the edition!

The Cape Batis is a small insectivorous bird endemic to the Afromontane forests of Southern Africa. In Cape Town they are most common in forests, riparian areas and well-wooded gardens. They are skulking birds, tricky to spot as they flit around in dense vegetation. They are given away by their sharp black, white and chestnut colouration and their loud territorial calls. Males have a broad black breast band while the females have a fainter chestnut band. They build delicate cup-like nests made out of dried plants bound with silk from spiderwebs and covered with pieces of lichen to provide incredible camouflage. Their presence in a garden can be quite a good indication of habitat quality! Text provided by Jessleena Suri, MSc graduate from the UCT FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology. KNITTING FOR GOEDGEDACHT The Knitter-Natters of Brown and Annie Lawrence Home, and friends, have worked hard making a collection of knitted blankets, beanies, baby clothes, jerseys and socks. These will be given to the nursery run by the olive farm of Goedgedacht near Riebeek West when 50 members of Pinelands SAARP will be spending the day there. The nursery school children will entertain the SAARP who will then have tea and scones, followed later by a farm lunch. There will also be a walk to the Memorial Wall where folk have acknowledged their loved ones. This is always a most heart warming visit and the SAARP appreciates all that the farm does for the education of under privileged children. Olive trees can be bought at Goedgedacht in remembrance of a loved one, or of a special occasion. The cost includes wording on a plaque on the wall of remembrance. The "Path out of Poverty" programme at Goedgedacht aims to heal the past and help the rural communities break free from the cycle of poverty, by offering education and work opportunities. Mhani Gingi is hoping for a record turnout for the Glyn Lewis Acoustic concert at the "Last Thursday" Live Music Gig (See Community Calendar for details). The Mhani Gingi non-profit organisation strives to alleviate poverty through providing innovative solutions for women, youth and the unemployed to make a sustainable living for themselves. The Social Responsibility Programme targets vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. A particular focus since mid2015 has been Mhani Gingiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s support for 15 Early Childhood Development (ECD) facilities in the Khayelitsha, Langa and Phillippi East townships of Cape Town. This includes training seven ECD principals; assisting with compliance and ensuring safe structures and playgrounds for the children; collecting donations of equipment and clothing; and helping to run the business of the ECD schools. In 2015/2016, the Social Responsibility Programme impacted on more than 600 children and their families through the support of 14 Early Learning Centres and 57 Early Childhood Development practitioners inÂ Cape Town. Pinelander Joan Wright, the main education facilitator, works tirelessly with the ladies at informal creches and also pre-primaries ensuring each week that they have a theme to follow with the children, as well as all the necessary materials. NO BODY LIKE JIMMY - A FANTASTIC FARCICAL PLAY BY CANNONS CREEK INDEPENDENT HIGH SCHOOL The newly opened Cannons Creek Cultural Centre worked as the perfect theatre venue for the first High School play to be presented in this hall. The very funny play about a politician, Eloise van der Merwe, (played by Tegan Gibaud) raising funding at a dinner party, while her husband Ralph, (played by Ethan McCrorie), and his friend Harold (played by Litha Dikiso) try to conceal the fact that the man sitting on the couch is an unknown dead person. They

name him Jimmy (played by Ross Valstar). The pompous speech writer Nigella (played by Grethan Menyacho) clashes with everyone at the party, including the campaign manager Diane (played by Luyanda Ncube). The drinks server Baxter (played by Nicola de Jager) takes in too much of the red wine offerings and in the end, when the hilarious police duo Officer Linda and Officer Cooper (played by Wa ka Sidwaba and Linathi Mosala) arrive, there

is pandemonium as each player including the rich donors Rick and Emma Johnson (played by Luke Arton-powell and Mia Westvig) believe that they are responsible for the death of the person on the couch! Even the 'corpse' can't help smiling at the comedy of errors. Well done to this small theatrical group, their technical supporters and play director Ms Judith Herbig for a very entertaining evening of theatre.

OPEN DAY AT THE PINELANDS ISLAMIC CENTRE Saturday, the 4th of March 2017 will be remembered as an auspicious day by the Pinelands Muslim Association. It was the Association’s first official ‘Open Day’, and the vibrant responses to their invitation, and participation from all those present certainly surpassed all expectations. The day was organized as a collaborative effort with Discover Islam, a non-profit organization, which focuses on teaching the ethos and values of Islam. The decision to host an ‘Open Day’ at the Pinelands Islamic Centre was, firstly, borne out of a desire and ethical responsibility to meet the neighbours, to extend their hospitality, and to start cultivating the foundations for new friendships and harmonious co-existence. Secondly, they considered the day as a wonderful opportunity not only to speak about what Islam is, and what a Muslim identity constitutes, but simply to engage with fellow Pinelanders, and further afield. The day took the form of a presentation on the tenets of Islam, followed by some Q & A, a mosque tour, and culminated in one-to-one engagements over some lovely treats – no doubt the best part of the day! Given the wonderful responses from a diverse group of church leaders, community members, civic organisations and schools, it became apparent that the need for engagement with others is a critical one. We often lose sight of the fact that the majority of South Africans – whether during or post-apartheid – lived, and continue to live in segregated silos where interactions with people from different racial, religious, cultural, ethnic and linguistic identities seldom occurred. The scrapping of the Groups Areas Act, which has seen the migration of families across historically constructed racial lines, has not facilitated the bringing together of people across colour, religious or cultural divides. As in schools, unless diversity is addressed and managed, communities will not know how to engage with one another, if efforts are not put in place to do so. The Pinelands Muslim Association wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all those, who honoured their invitation, and who participated in the day’s proceedings. They consider this endeavour as the first of many, and look forward to establishing closer ties with all of our community and beyond, so that we might each make a contribution to a vibrant, diverse, and respectful South African society. SAMURAI PINELANDS FUTURE CHAMPIONS Samurai Pinelands recently took part in the KSISAS (Kimura Shukokai International South Africa South). Regional Karate Championships. The club sent 23 students to compete and took 30 medals. In preparation for the National Championships in September 2017, they are taking their squad team on tour to the Eastern Cape in April to compete and train with other clubs. The head instructor, Sensei Bradley Grant-Smith, 5th Dan and previous world champ is focussed on developing young potentials in the area. PNPS Red-A-Fair 2017 On Saturday 4 March, Pinelands North Primary School was transformed into a fest of fun and food, with delicious cakes, a speedy zipline, a water-wise plant sale, a frightening hall of horrors, a small library of books, a dance-off competition and a chance to get jewellery polished. Visitors were treated to a variety of entertainment from the Cape Province Dog Club, the Dance Mouse crew, and musician Simon van Gend with his acoustic guitar. Children competed in some lateral-thinking, and collaborative challenges with The Amazing Games, by parent, Lloyd Tooke. The Highland Dancers and an Irish band brought a Celtic flavour to the fair. Water restrictions meant the traditional water-slides were not present this year, but the crowd was not disappointed with the Rocket Launcher and the Barrel Train, as well as a host of other games from paintball to pony rides. The memorable Hall of Horrors sent chills down your spine and the fun photo booth let you capture the day’s memories with your best friends!

THEATRESPORTS CHALLENGE

WHAT YOUR CAR IS TRYING TO TELL YOU Noises from your car are like pain in your body, something is not right. Shante Williams won the lucky packet draw for the Big teddy bear from the sweet and sticky stall. Pinelands North parents volunteered throughout the day offering a choice of traditional braai foods, curries, samoosas, and smoothies. All the fun was for a good cause as the funds raised from the Reda-Fair will go towards the school’s toilet upgrade project. A group of 12 Pinehurst Theatrecraft pupils had an enjoyable evening presenting a Theatresports challenge to the ladies of EWA at the Methodist Church on Wednesday 15th March. Past pupils Simon Hobbs, Jonathan Pursch and Scoutt Lowe each led a team of enthusiastic performers as they presented unprepared drama skits and sketches while competing for points. After a brief introduction of her drama career and how drama has changed since the days of school elocution, Paula Pursch ran a challenge with everything from a scene in a Formula One pit-stop to a hospital ER while the audience judged the sketches with score cards.

Small noises or a change in how the car feels can be an indication that a serious problem is developing, so don’t ignore them. Have it checked soon – early diagnosis and repair is the least costly option if you take the car to a well-equipped garage to help you. A dash light coming on is a serious warning signal. If your oil light comes on, stop immediately and have it checked or the engine could seize up. ABS brake lights are another absolute check signal. Brake failure cost lives. Defective brake lights are also very dangerous as you risk being rear-ended. Car parts are becoming very costly. Having your car repaired by an independent garage like Greenside Service Station is an advantage and opportunity to save money because they can use generic parts, which are reliable and also carry a guarantee, but are considerably less costly. Game Drive at Villiera Wildlife Sanctuary

We were pleasantly surprised at the amount of game that we saw as the game viewing vehicle drove through the Villiera Wildlife Sanctuary. It was chilly and we were supplied with blankets for our knees, but that didn't detract from the excitement of seeing the leaping Springbok - including both black and white Springbok, Giraffe, Waterbuck, Zebra, Eland, Bontebok and Black Wildebeest. The game ranger also stopped for us to get out and search for chameleons in the rushes of a riverbed and we found one! There are 12 dams on the property, and as expected, they were low or dry, meaning we saw less birdlife than usual. A lone hawk gave a hunting display that satisfied us though. The sanctuary is not far from Cape Town - take the N1 and exit at number 39, following the R304 towards Stellenbosch for 2km. The game drive begins at the Villiera wine estate which is at the T-junction opposite the Koelenhof Winery. Entry for the two hour drive is R220 per adult and R110 for children under 15. SUPERVISION DURING THE HOLIDAYS

School holidays form part of the rhythm of a school year, giving children and their teachers a much-needed and carefullytimed opportunity to recover, relax and recharge for the work that lies ahead in 10:06 AM new term. However, this rest period the often presents a dilemma for parents, particularly those who are working and cannot take leave to be with their children. Careful practical arrangements need to be put in place during the holidays.

FAMILY OPTIONS

In most situations, the easiest option is to approach family members - the children’s grandparents or your own siblings, who share your values and child-rearing practices. This may place a tremendous responsibility on seniors, willing as they may be, and could be very tiring for them. Perhaps a few hours a day or couple of days in the week would be more manageable? Always remember to reciprocate in some way in order to show your appreciation!

ANNUAL LEAVE OPTIONS

Try to negotiate flexi-time or work from home options with your company. Arrange for annual leave to be split over the four holidays and share the holiday responsibilities with other mums in the same situation. Maybe there’s a stay-at11:56 AM home mom or three in your circle, whom you trust, who would be happy to look after children in exchange for date nights or weekends away, while you care for their children, to reciprocate for their holiday duty. Ideally, moms and dads should share this responsibility, but it often falls to the moms. That’s a topic for another article!

AFTER-CARE FACILITIES

After-care facilities are open during school holidays and, while there is a surcharge for longer hours, the safe and familiar environment for your children, with familiar friends is provided. Some after-cares will admit children for school holidays only, but you are advised to enquire early, as casual vacancies will be limited.

ORGANISED HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES

Many local churches plan holiday clubs, as do public libraries and many sports clubs. While these seldom last for a full day or continue for more than a week, they provide supervised, safe, constructive activity and entertainment for your children. Remember however, that holidays are essentially periods of rest and that “over-organising” your children is counterproductive. They will have interests and preferences so be sure to discuss the holiday programme with them. Allow the odd rest day, when your child can just relax and spend the day lost in a wonderful book. Practically minded children would love the challenge of teaching themselves a new craft, making a mobile, flying a kite, preparing dinner, re-arranging their bedroom and so on.

HOME ALONE?

Some parents of older children may feel that their offspring are sufficiently mature, independent and responsible, to leave at home for short periods, or to be left in charge of younger siblings. What does the law say? There is no South African law stating an age at which children can or cannot be left alone, but the law is blatantly clear about the responsibility of parents to look after their children. If you decide to leave your children in the care of an older sibling or other young person, you must be sure they would cope with an emergency such as a fire, an accident or a break-in. Is it reasonable to give a child such an enormous responsibility? Should there be an incident then as the parent you will be held liable.

MAKE IT FUN!

Holiday activities for children are numerous and always in demand. Aim for a balance between indoor and outdoor activity, and no matter what you decide to do, make sure that huge helpings of fun are involved, if not guaranteed. PYRAMID SCHEMES AND THE SHOCKING TRUTH OF THE 6 X 6 MATRIX Pyramid schemes and/or Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) companies are often used by South Africans to escape poverty and debt. With the high level of fake news on social media, it is an unfortunate truth that investment scams are on the rise. It can be confusing identifying a genuine business opportunity from an investment scam, and consumers need to be vigilant in their assessments. Many MLM companies fly very close to the letter of the law and may not necessarily be smart choices for generating additional income.

A PYRAMID SCHEME WILL COLLAPSE

On the face of it, it may be difficult to tell a Pyramid Scheme from an MLM because both business models rely on multiple levels of distributors and recruits. In essence, a Pyramid Scheme is a fraudulent system of making money based on recruiting an ever-increasing number of so-called investors. By their very nature, Pyramid schemes are doomed to fail because their success depends on the ability to keep recruiting more investors. Since there are only a limited number of people in a given community, all pyramid schemes will eventually collapse.

MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING

On the other hand, companies such as Herbalife, Amway and Avon are MLM’s that sell products directly to consumers without using intermediary retail stores. Their products are sold through a network of distributors set up to resemble a pyramid. Where MLM’s most often sell genuine products (anything from cleaning products to make-up), a Pyramid Scheme very often does not even have a product in place. The two forms of marketing are often confused because their business models are shaped like a pyramid. As an MLM recruit, you can make a profit both from selling the company’s products and from recruiting sales people below you, thereby exponentially increasing the sales force.

COMPETITION IN YOUR OWN COMMUNITY

One of the inherent problems in both Pyramid Schemes and MLM is that anyone you recruit as a salesperson may end up competing with you for the very same sales, especially when operating in close-knit communities. As more people participate, the supply of products and those selling them can end up exceeding consumer demand.

DEBORAH NICHOLLS Passion for people and their wellbeing has brought Deborah to her true path in life, through the exercise programme known as Ageless Grace. Inspired by the healing potential of music and exercise stimulating neuroplasticity (brain fitness), she has used her entrepreneurial skills to establish the Ageless Grace exercise programme in Cape Town, modelled on the original formula developed for the aged, by Denise Medved, and building on research that shows that the best exercise for the brain is physical exercise. Hardworking, people person, Deborah Nicholls came to Pinelands four years ago. Her entrepreneurial spirit has led her through running her own PR agency in Johannesburg, event management in Cape Town, and the establishment of a company sourcing and selling Robinson helicopters. When the opportunity arose to start her own restaurant, Deborah threw herself into the venture with heart and soul. The long hard hours took their toll; and on the advice of her husband, his lawyer and her mother's words "Live your life", Deborah sold the restaurant and followed her dream of teaching health and well-being. Thus began her life as an Ageless Grace Instructor and Trainer.

EXERCISE ON A CHAIR - REALLY?

"When a friend from church recommended that I go to a demo of Ageless Grace and that the exercises were done on a chair - I thought "really?". One of the major thrusts of the Ageless Grace programme is to develop new neural pathways through imagination, movement and music. It is natural to slow down as we age, physically and cognitively. CHRIS WILDMAN

Using music to work through a time of personal crisis, Chris Wildman discovered how music improvisation singing and movement, can alter the state of mind. Happily he now uses this talent and technique to help others on a journey to recovery through mental and physical illness. Head of music therapy at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, Chris explains how making music can improve the quality of life.

QUALIFICATIONS

Chris graduated with a degree in English Language and Literature from King's College in London. He followed his girlfriend to South Africa, and made this country his home in 1974. After discovering the healing power in making music he studied remedial music at the South African College of Music and has been a music therapist since 1987. He plays the guitar and is a self-taught piano player. In 1994 he founded Music Play to inspire children with a combination of music and play. Today he continues his work with children, particularly in the burns unit at Red Cross Children's Hospital; and more recently with the elderly on a programme called Liven up with Music and Dance.

MUSIC AT RED CROSS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

"I concentrate on rhythm and music games, either one-on-one with a child who is perhaps recovering in the Intensive Care Unit; or alternatively with a group of children in the ward - where I find the staff are often keen to join in. We start with tapping instruments â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a tambourine - just developing a rhythm. Children and adults are often shy to continue as they may have been taught about what is considered 'good music' and are therefore afraid to make a mistake. This is however not my intention. Once a trust has been developed we move onto music and movement. So many areas of one's life are affected by the music and movement, beneficial to mind and soul, physical well-being, memory and sensuality. Even very young children who cannot yet speak can take part and benefit from joyful playing and dancing because music can be so infectious. Building on their confidence makes the children leaders of the session too, breaking free from expectations heaped on them by adults. For the children, being able to play music and uncover their sense of creativity gives the child direction and joy, which encourages them to look forward to their next jamming session". Chris recently participated in research into the effects of music on physical healing

during a medical study while burns patients had their wound dressings changed. The aim was to see if music play during this traumatic procedure would calm and settle a child, taking their mind off the immediate pain and discomfort. We wish Chris well as he travels to Melbourne this month to visit the Children's Hospital and explore their Music Therapy programme.

WORKING AT RETIREMENT HOMES Chris explains that the benefits of music therapy, especially the act of making your own music, far outweigh the benefits of simply listening to pre-recorded music. Simple rhythmic tapping, singing, and body movement all work in tandem to release self-healing energy - both physical and mental. Being playful through the medium of music opens a new dimension of life.

MUSIC THERAPY AS A CAREER For those interested in music therapy as a career, Chris confirms that it is medically accepted as a complimentary medical procedure, registered with the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa). FINDING YOUR RHYTHM

During a brief impromptu session of music play with Chris I found myself combining the gentle tapping of a tambourine with the swish of a drum brush. It felt energising and strangely comforting as Chris strummed away at his guitar with no particular tune in mind. Chris believes that making your own music is more important than being reminded of music that you may have known in your past. Even a non-musician is able to change their state of mind to a better place by playing a musical instrument.

PARASAILING AT ÎLE AUX CERFS

We enjoy exploring the island and in the past visited the coloured earths, and waterfall at Chamarel, the Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens and the Casela Bird Park. One of our favourites is Île aux Cerfs on the east side of the island, where the beaches are soft and sandy but there can be strong winds. A short ferry ride takes one to a warm, calm lagoon perfect for swimming. There are many watersports on offer including snorkelling in the marine reserve. On this trip we decided to try a tandem parasail from a platform in the sea. A glorious experience with, thankfully, a perfect landing - well done Max!

Once the seas had calmed we ventured south through the beautiful highlands past Curepipe to La Preneuse beach. From here a speed boat took us to Tamarin Bay to swim with the dolphins. The trip over the reef which surrounds the island was slow and careful. Once we were in the swell of the waves of the deeper sea in Tamarin Bay we were surrounded by playful Spinner Dolphins, giving us a wonderful display of

their vertical leaps into the sky combined with fast spiralling of their bodies before crashing back into the sea. We topped this wonderful experience off with a swim at Flic en Flac and lunch under the trees at the beach.

DAZZLING TROPICAL FISH

Twenty minutes walk from our villa was the Point aux Pimentes aquarium - with numerous displays of tropical fish, the dangerous stone fish, eels, sharks and turtles. Worth a visit especially for the lunch of smoked Marlin panini and a milkshake. Entry to the aquarium 300 Rupees each and the lunch for 2 was, 420 Rupees. Take 1 Rand to 2.6 Rupees.

GOOD BUS SERVICE

Our bus trip to Port Louis to see the beautiful fruit market and the Caudan Waterfront was a 30 minute ride that only cost 54 Rupees. Conductors on the buses are very helpful. We opted for a taxi for our visit to Grand Baai, when we were wilting from the heat and high humidity.

CAP MALHEREUX & AINSE LE RAAI LAGOON

A small fishing village in the north of the island boasting a striking red roofed church and a view to Coin de Mire was a photographic delight on our last day in Mauritius. Under the shade of a huge Banyan tree we watched the fishermen bring in red snapper and children somersaulting off the jetty. We topped off this day, our 27th wedding anniversary, with lunch at the nearby heavenly Paradise Cove Hotel. Actually we had a further treat that evening at La Cabane du Pêcheur a short walk from our villa. The six of us had a table under the trees next to the sea and enjoyed the most delicious grilled dorado with numerous tasty accompaniments. Fireworks across the bay and firelanterns floating overhead, completed the idyllic evening, and a wonderful island holiday.

We arrived at our self catering villa, Sugar Pearl, in Pointe aux Biches, south west of Grand Baie, just after 6pm in the evening.
