"MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES" Sometimes called The Chinese Curse, it's uncertain who first introduced this saying, but it does not seem to have a Chinese origin. Nevertheless, it is a very apt and succinct saying which conveys the dual blessing and curse of turbulent times. Perhaps the person who did most to popularize it was Robert Kennedy. In a speech at UCT in Cape Town in June 1966, He said: “There is a Chinese curse which says 'May he live in interesting times.' Like it or not we live in interesting times. They are times of danger and uncertainty, but they are also more open to the creative energy of men than any other time in history”. As we begin to climb out of the depth of mid-winter towards spring and summer, we certainly have, as a city and as a nation, some interesting times ahead of us, with our own local water crisis and the unsettled economy and leadership of the country brewing the discontent of citizens. With this all coming to a head in the near future, Kennedy could have been speaking to us today. Importantly, he reminded us that throughout history, times of upheaval have yielded some of the greatest reforms when citizens and leaders were forced to confront their differences and face the problems honestly and urgently, to take the bold and uncomfortable steps away from the status quo to secure a better future for all citizens. Mike van Haght's article on the plight of our tertiary education institutions on page 14 serves as an example of the responsibility of all parties needed to confront and fix an important social problem which can cripple the prosperity and wellbeing of our country. While we may feel personally powerless to have any effect, it is our responsiblity as citizens to do and say what is right in our small sphere of influence, because it is the harmony of many small voices that make up the loud roar that cannot be ignored. Peregrine Falcon The Peregrine Falcon is a metropolitan raptor that occurs on every continent apart from Antarctica. Peregrines are a prime example of a species that has adapted to living in urban environments. Buildings provide ideal nesting and hunting habitat, and the abundance of pigeons and starlings make for a rich food source. Cape Town is no exception and is said to have one of the highest breeding densities of Peregrines. It is always worth checking high perches like pylons and ledges on buildings for these birds. Their shape can easily be confused for a pigeon or dove, but the falcon’s more upright posture and contrasting colours will tell them apart. A quick flurry of a flock of pigeons or starlings can also be a give-away of a Peregrine’s presence! Image: Peregrin falcon, Chemistry building, UCT. Text and image by Jessleena Suri, MSc graduate from the UCT FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology. Jess is passionate about nature conservation, particularly birds and urban ecology. She has just started a PhD looking at the effect of urban landscape structure on bird diversity. See: www.facebook.com/nomadicnaturalistjessleena

HOME IS OUR STORY The rights of Landlords and Lessees during the sale of a tenanted property.

SOLD BY US

Last month we discussed the obligations of the landlords and this week we will consider the obligations of the tenant. It’s often a difficult and emotional situation when a tenanted property is sold. With the right attitude and sensitivity to all parties, it doesn’t have to be unfair or unpleasant. If everyone is upfront and honest about their plans and expectations, and are willing to compromise for the sake of a positive outcome, both tenant and landlord can enjoy a stress-free experience. An open communication between landlord, tenant and agent can make all the difference when it comes to a smooth sales process. Tenants must allow reasonable access to the property and should make an effort to keep things as neat and clean as possible when expecting visitors. It’s a twoway street though, as estate agents and landlords need to respect the tenant’s rights as well. You can’t force someone to vacate their home every Sunday for months on end, or allow visitors to wonder around at all times of day and night. Tenants must ensure that pets are kept safe and locked up as they could be responsible if their dog or cat injures someone viewing the property.

CLIENT COMMENT “I was very impressed with Pat’s efficiency. She was very friendly and professional. It was a quick and happy sale. Seeff contributed to low stress levels in the purchase of our first home.” Jeanne Korsman

LET BY US

To keep tenant/landlord relationships amicable during the marketing of the property, Seeff recommends negotiating set dates and times for holding viewings. Tenants should also provide the Landlord/Agent with a copy (snag-list) of defects in the property so that the information can be made available to prospective purchasers and to protect the tenant against any claims that the purchaser may have. Tenants do have the right to request to be present when the property is shown, but it’s often less disruptive if the agent can arrange to take buyers around while the tenant is at work or away.

Pinelands R16 000pm Pinelands R6 500pm

When dealing with respected Agents they will always attempt to first find an investor buyer, but this may not always be possible. In these cases, all the terms and conditions of the lease will carry over to the new owner and landlord.

We are available to discuss all of your property needs, buying, selling and letting.

PINELANDS TENNIS CLUB NAMED WESTERN PROVINCE CLUB OF THE YEAR

The 2016/2017 season proved very successful for the Pinelands Tennis Club. Besides winning four leagues, it was also named Club of the Year at the annual Western Province Awards evening at Kelvin Grove, held on 1 July. Chairlady Ilse McCarthy put together a presentation that convinced the Western Province committee that Pinelands is without doubt the best club in the province. Besides producing excellent tennis at junior and senior level, the club also works hard on development of the sport in disadvantaged areas. At 94 years old and with over 160 active members, the club is definitely alive and well. Pinelands won the following leagues:

Western Province Award Evening at Kelvin Grove. Back: Lee Williams, Charles Dearham, Merle Blakey-Milner, Bob Low, Lesil Harvey, Ilse McCarthy, Nick Kulenkampff, Leah Nasson. Front: Candice Clapham, Mario Calvert, Lindi Webster, Chris Betteridge, Brett Roach.

Every year more club members are venturing overseas to try International Marathons or runs. Mauritius, Paris, London, New York, Victoria Falls, New Zealand, Venice, Thailand, Stockholm and Cambodia. The latest is the Prague Marathon. The “Camino de Santiago Walk” in Spain is fast becoming a must among club members. A few members have done this and are still talking about it.

ON THE SOCIAL SCENE

It is not all running in Pinelands Athletic Club. There are other activities which keep the club spirit going. The monthly braainight sees the “Full House” sign go up and the club house is packed. Local Pinelander Berenice Fester, a Grade 3 teacher at Pinelands Primary School received an award for 28 years of commitment and dedication to Mini-Cricket. Berenice comments "I started off by coaching under 9 boys only and about 5 years ago, when my colleague retired at Pinelands Primary School, I took over the role as convenor of Mini-Cricket for the Pinelands Zone. There are 9 schools in the zone, including all the Pinelands Primary schools, Thornton Primary, Cannons Creek, St. Georges Grammar, The International School, Koeberg Primary and two schools from Kensington. Mini-Cricket is for boys and girls, from Grade R to Grade 3 The emphasis is on enjoyment. There is huge interest in cricket for girls, especially after the Women's Cricket World Cup in England this year." At the most recent Seminar in the Drakensberg, teachers initiated the CSA approach for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) to incorporate MiniCricket into the Life Skills programme at foundation level.

OUT AND ABOUT

VISIT THE BLUE COW AT THE BARRYDALE 'WATERFRONT'

On a recent trip back from a fabulous restful break at Sedgefield we journeyed home via Route 62. For us it appeared to be a quieter route than the N2 and there were many places to stop, stretch the legs and forage for food and/or shops! One delightful stop that we simply have to share is the Blue Cow coffee shop at the Barrydale 'Waterfront'. Follow the signs off the R62 to a quaint barn-like structure with a beautiful deck over a freshwater dam. It is situated on a dairy farm with views across the valley to the surrounding mountains. You will receive a very friendly welcome from the staff (or the owner if she is there) - and you will be given a handful of bread to feed the hordes of fish with their gaping mouths eager to catch every breadcrumb. The menu is simple fare with light meals and the most delicious scones and milk tart - lovingly plated and decorated to celebrate the Blue Cow. Fluffy knee blankets were passed round to fend off the chill in the air, and afterwards we loaded up with jars of exotic jams hanepoot, peach, tomato and onion. Then we left clutching a brochure advertising the farmstay cottages now available too - for our next trip up the R62.

On July 27 the residents of the Helen Keller Society in Pinelands celebrated Helen Keller’s birthday. The Lions Club of Cape Town added to the occasion by donating their 60th anniversary cake to the residents. Born in 1880 Helen Keller went deaf and lost her sight after an illness when she was 18 months old. Anne Sullivan became a constant companion, teaching Helen to speak, and putting her on the road to becoming a tireless advocate for people with disabilities. In 1925 Helen addressed a Lions Club International Convention and challenged the Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness". Since then the Lions aim to include sight related service projects and remember June 1st as Helen Keller Day.

DEAVIAH MOODLEY DANCES AT THE WORLD CHILDREN'S PRIZE AWARDS IN SWEDEN

August 2017 | the muse | 10 Deaviah Moodley, in Indian dance outfit, with the South African Band that performed at the World Children’s Prize in Sweden.

Deaviah Moodley is an ambassador for the World Children’s Prize (WCP) and this year she was invited to be a part of the South African delegation at the 2017 World Children’s Prize Foundation (WCPF) annual awards function. Deaviah performed for Queen Silvia and other dignitaries in Sweden at the prize giving ceremony at Gripsholm Castle, Mariefred, Sweden, on the 26th April.

CHILDREN VOTE FOR THEIR CHILD RIGHTS HEROES

The World Children's Prize can be likened to the Nobel Prize awarded by children to candidates chosen for the work they do in the field of child rights and democracy. The three nominees this year were Rosi Gollmann for her work in India; Molly Melching and her work in West Africa; and the winner for 2017 chosen by millions of children worldwide is Manuel Rodrigues, a blind child rights activist for his work done to raise the quality of life for disabled children in Guinea-Bissau.

LOCAL DIGNITARIES ENTERTAINED AT THE ARTSCAPE

Deaviah is at Rustenburg Girls High in Grade 11. She dances with the Vadhini Indian Arts Academy and has been dancing since she was 7 years old. Dignitaries including Patrica de Lille, and Vicky Sampson were also able to enjoy Deaviah's dancing at the SA delegation homecoming performance at the Artscape Theatre. Deaviah is passionate about the rights of the child and speaks at various schools to raise awareness of the WCPF and to get participation in the WCPF programme.

A FULFILLING TRIP TO SWEDEN

The trip to Sweden was Deaviah's first international experience. She made many friends and enjoyed the countryside around Mariefred where she saw snow for the first time; spotted deer in the wild - and found herself falling in love with the country! After the prize-giving event she visited numerous schools in Sweden where she spoke about children’s rights and how to raise the voice of children in their fight against human rights violations. She is greatly concerned by the atrocities committed against children and going forward will be a brand ambassador for the World’s Children's Prize.

PATRONS OF THE WORLD CHILDREN'S PRIZE FUND

Five Nobel Prize Laureates and many public figures have shown their support for the WCP by becoming patrons, including the late Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, Xanana Gusmão, Graça Machel, Desmond Tutu, Vusi Mahlasela, the late Ahmed Kathrada, Iqbal Surve , H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden, and Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.

A GENERATION OF CHANGE MAKERS

Children who are empowered through the WCP Program become changemakers themselves. As children, and later as adults, they stand up for the equal value of all people, child rights, human rights and democracy, and global sustainable development. For more see www.worldchildrenspize.org.

ESSENTIALS FOR SUCCESSFUL LONG-TERM INVESTING part two

JOIN US FOR

FINANCIAL PLANNING WEEK

By Sue Torr Director Crue Invest

4 to 8 September 2017 We welcome all residents of Pinelands and surrounding suburbs to join us at any of these complimentary service events. Mon 4 Sept Following the Muse July 2017 edition on long term investing: part one which covered goal setting, seeking an independent advisor with a set fee structure, the psychology of long term investing, different investment vehicles and the balance between long term investing and living now - we continue with the essentials of market investment.

UNDERSTAND HOW MARKETS OPERATE

An independent advisor should provide investor education to any first-time investors to ensure that they fully understand the nature and mechanics of investment markets. Financial markets fluctuate over time in response to social, political and economic events, and long-term investors need to be at peace with this inevitability. Equity investments are, by their very nature, more volatile than other asset classes such as cash and bonds, and investors should be advised to accept significant short-term fluctuations in the value of their portfolios. It goes without saying that past share performance is no guarantee of future performance, but it is worth remembering that stock markets have proven their resilience even in times of dramatic political and economic turbulence.

REVIEW YOUR INVESTMENTS REGULARLY, BUT DON’T TRACK THEM DAILY

If you’re investing for the long-term, our advice is to review your investments less frequently to avoid panic and anxiety. Human behaviour is such that our response to bad news is more emotionally heightened than our reaction to good news, which makes tracking one’s longterm investments on a daily basis an extremely counter-productive activity. Agree upfront with your financial advisor how often you wish to review your investments (preferably quarterly or annually), and stick to the arrangement. Anything that happens in between your reviews should be considered noise.

CONSIDER A MULTI-MANAGER APPROACH

Portfolio management and the selection of underlying investments is a uniquely specialist field, and one that requires an enormous amount of investment capability, research and skill – which is the expertise of discretionary funds managers (DFMs). Rather than adopting a single manager approach, investors are able to appoint a DFM to manage their investment portfolio in accordance with a specific mandate. The appointed DFM will decide on an appropriate asset allocation (mix of local and offshore equities, cash, bonds and property) as well as select the unit trusts used to express that asset allocation. The blending of specialist managers within asset classes as well as having experts managing the investor’s overall asset allocation, results in a huge amount of professional resources working on each client’s portfolio.

DON’T SPECULATE OR TIME THE MARKETS

Predicting the future is not a skill required for long-term investing. Avoid succumbing to FOMO (the fear of missing out) by ignoring the so-called ‘hot tips’ and ‘sure-thing’ advice dispensed by market speculators. Their aim is to make quick money every once in a while. Your aim is to stay invested in a portfolio that will consistently out-perform the market over the longer-term.

UNDERSTAND YOUR TOLERANCE FOR RISK

Risk tolerance is an area of financial planning that your financial advisor should be able to guide and mentor you on. The risk that your investments need to be exposed to, is a fine balance between the returns your money needs to achieve in order to reach your goals, your liquidity requirements in retirement and your personal propensity for taking risk. There is no point investing in a higher risk portfolio if the risk exposure is affecting your ability to contain your emotions. 

PINELANDERS

SANDY JEFFERIES

Sandy grew up in Pinelands and comes from a family of four sisters and one brother. At the age of 18 she married and left Pinelands - but has continued her long relationship with the suburb through her work at Robelle at the Howard Centre.

HOW DID YOUR CAREER AT ROBELLE START?

"My mother was a "gutsy" person who did many jobs in her life from driving a farm truck, to selling Tupperware, to running a crèche in Pinelands - where she cared for Peter Dirk Uys and his sister Tessa. I was a laatlammetjie in the family born when my mother was 45, leaving a gap of 15 years between my older sister and myself. In 1974 my mother was searching for an outfit for my wedding and while in Robelle she was approached by the owners to buy the business! Naturally I helped my mom in the shop and so began my lifelong career at Robelle. My mother retired at 77 in 1988. My sister Joan East, now retired, and I were like siamese twins, and when Joan retired in 2012 we had worked together for 37 years! The shop was sold in 2012 to Lynn Bing and I still enjoy working here with Charmaine."

www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za

LONG TIME TRADITION

Sandy travels in to Pinelands every day from Durbanville and recalls living through the building and construction work which saw Robelle move to three different locations within the Howard Centre - once causing great consternation when a light fitting collapsed in the change rooms while a customer was fitting a garment! Sandy remembers the days of Barnett's Pharmacy, Walkeasy, the Wiesenhof restaurant and Findlays - one of the original shops in the Howard Centre and still going strong. Customers of the shop have become like family and remember her three sons, Gregory, Michael and Andrew Craddock.

THE CLEGHORN WAY

Top class customer service became a way of life under the strict supervision of Mrs Scott who had been the head sales lady at Cleghorns - an upmarket departmental store where the staff wore black pencil skirts and tailored white blouses. Sandy was taught the importance of being helpful to a customer ... but was also under strict instructions only to speak when spoken to!

FASHION AND FABRIC CHANGES

Sandy and her sister were responsible for all the buying for just on 37 years. She recalls that in bygone days “Clothing just seemed to be a bit more colourful”. Besides buying and attending to customers Sandy did the fitting for alterations and today is still responsible for the bookkeeping which is done manually.

HOBBIES

"I have a love for music and took piano lessons with Charles Segal, a well-known syncopation pianist, in Cape Town. I am by no means a good piano player preferring to play for my own enjoyment, appreciating more contemporary music from the late 60's onwards, and music from musicals, however I am not a classical musician. When I retire one day, I would like to get stuck into all my music again. Music is in the family, with my mom and my siblings playing the piano. My husband, Ian is the organist at the Durbanville Methodist Church. My youngest son Andrew Craddock is very musical and I have noticed a love for music in my grandchildren - 3 girls and 3 boys aged from 2 to 14 years. Having lost my previous husband John to cancer I would love to get involved in our church’s flower ministry and visiting at Tygerberg Hospital as this is something very near and dear to my heart. I would also enjoy spending more time with my hubby, Ian who retired towards the end of last year as well as my lovely grandchildren. I also have a love of gardening so I’m quite sure I’ll be well occupied tending the garden". 

In August this year Sandy will have been the familiar face at Robelle clothing store for 43 years. She loves her job; loves helping people in the shop and comments that during her time at the Howard Centre she has come to know many Pinelands residents - meeting when they were "pushing prams" and sharing stories years later when they are "pushing walkers”.

PINELANDERS COMMUNITY NEWS

AMELIE & RONALD STAAL

When Amelie Guyot-Staal and Ronald Staal moved into their home in Pinelands in November 2013, the couple saw more than just a nice house with a big yard. They saw the potential to develop a project that might change the way South Africans think about farming. Since settling into the neighbourhood, the Staals have been transforming their home into a smaller version of an urban farm.

August 2017 | the muse | 13

LOCAL, ORGANIC FOOD

The Staals’ project encompasses something quite unique, in that they have matched their idea of hobby gardening with entrepreneurial vision. Food is grown on only 300m² of land surrounding their house. In fact, from the street, the house blends into its suburban surroundings. However, inside is a miniature haven of edible plants – lettuces, spring onions, herbs, granadillas, fruit trees, and chickens. The couple’s aim is to use their garden space efficiently and intelligently, so that they can reap as much produce from the land as possible. That’s why they focus on producing greens, salads and micro-greens since, they explain, these crops are best suited to small, urban spaces. And indeed, their garden produces enough to supply to local customers with weekly boxes, restaurants, as well as to sell at Rondebosch Organic Market on Saturday mornings.

THE MARKET GARDEN

Initially, they followed guidelines set out by North American farmers, but soon enough, the Staals found that market gardening in South Africa presents unique challenges – water shortages, extreme heat and sandy soils consistently threaten their ability to produce a sustainable business. “We spent two years just making compost,” recalls Amelie Guyot-Staal, laughing, “We ripped out all the lawns and had big mounds of compost under tarps. Our neighbours must have thought we were crazy.” Even now, they have to add compost to their soils regularly.

REVOLUTIONIZING FARMING

The Staals believe that it is important for Pinelanders to be able to source food locally, since produce grown closer to the customer contributes less to carbon emissions from transportation and ensures freshness, which usually means the vegetables are at their most nutritious state. Devoted to health and the environment, the couple grow their produce according to organic principles. Even more, they aim to use resources efficiently, choosing to grow greens suited to the seasons, and varieties that require less water. Their aim is to exemplify that market gardening can be a viable source of income for anyone who has access to a small plot of land.

YOU DON'T NEED A BIG FARM

With faith and a lot of hard work, the couple’s dream seems to be coming to fruition. The welcome winter rains have filled their water tanks with a storage capacity of 30 000L. By proving that market gardening can work, they hope to make people question the conventional agriculture systems that dominate the market. They also hope to change the notion that farming involves huge tracts of land, and even the stigma that farming is a low-skilled job. “It took a while to get the enterprise going, but I think things will start moving quickly now,” says Amelie Guyot-Staal, gazing out at her garden. Every day, the garden becomes more and more impressive as her vision slowly takes shape. For more details email Amelie at: pinelandsmarketgarden@gmail.com. 

Green fingered Amelie and Ronald met while doing volunteer work for the Findhorn Foundation in an eco-village in Scotland. Their shared interest in developing a healthy urban market garden brought them to South Africa where Amelie had studied a Masters in Sustainable Development. The couple married at the Botanical Gardens in Betty's Bay. Their dream is now being successfully realised in their Pinelands garden even though they have had to make provision for the extended drought.

During the past two to three years public tertiary institutions have been racked with unrest, protests, violence, intimidation, destruction of property and even deaths. In the light of this, I am often asked by parents about where their children should study after school. It is becoming more and more difficult to answer that question. On the one hand, the future of South African universities looks bleak. Professor Jonathan Jansen, previous (yes, he has resigned as a result of the pressures and intimidation 8:34 AM he and his family were subjected to) Vice Chancellor of the University of the Free State, in his book, AS BY FIRE the end of the South African university, says: “What does all this mean for South African universities? In a nutshell, there is no future. The forces of underfunding, interference and instability, acting together, are collapsing public universities rendered impotent through incessant violence, which, however justified, is razing to the ground the last of the continent’s most competitive research institutions.”

Of course there will still be “universities”. But these will simply become a collection of poorly maintained and under-resourced buildings, overfilled with “students” whose parents cannot afford to send them to private or overseas institutions, staffed by junior lecturers who have, out of desperation, been promoted to senior positions, offering a stop-gap programme, staggering from one protest action to another.

PUBLIC RESPONSIBILITY

On the other hand, there is a ray of hope. There is a reason these are called public universities – they belong to all South Africans, not just a handful of anarchists. “It is possible to salvage our universities if ordinary citizens once again reclaim the public in our public universities.” (J.D. Jansen). This burden must not just fall on the shoulders of our children at university. Schools, employers, religious communities, NGOs, alumni, parents, non-protesting students, civic leaders and ordinary people need to stand together insisting that our public universities function well and retain their world-class ratings. This will entail us demanding and expecting the following:

By Mike van Haght Principal Cannons Creek Independent High School

Firstly, our school leaving exam should be designed to accurately identify those who stand a genuine chance of succeeding at university versus those who qualify to study at non-university tertiary institutions. Currently we have a politically driven system designed to “qualify” as many school leavers for university as possible. It is no surprise that universities cannot cope with the demand for places and once accepted, students find themselves unable to cope with the rigours of genuine university study. The South African school leaving exam must accurately and fairly direct matriculants into a stream of post school education appropriate to their academic abilities and interests. Secondly, government will need to adequately finance our public universities and provide fully funded education through grants for poor, first-degree, first generation students without any obligation to pay back, and repayable grants and loans for students whose families are financially better off. If properly managed, this is financially possible and sustainable.

RIGHTS COME WITH RESPONSIBILITIES

What is our role in this? Schools need to educate our pupils for university not just academically but also in terms of the social and financial responsibilities incumbent upon those who study beyond school. Post school education is a right, however, it also comes with responsibilities, including adhering to the rule of law. This should form part of the informal and formal curriculum – covered in a subject like Life Orientation as a compulsory module for anyone wanting to apply for tertiary education.

STAND TOGETHER TO SAVE UNIVERSITIES

This theme must also be reinforced throughout society – “you have a right to tertiary education but with this right comes the responsibility to study, to respect the property and rights of others and, if applicable, to assist those who come after you by repaying study loans once you have qualified and found work”. We South Africans are a resilient lot; we rose above the odds and brought an apartheid government to its knees; we achieved a bloodless revolution – surely we can stand together to demand and ensure the survival of our public universities? After all – they belong to all South Africans. 

ILITHA LABANTU AWARENESS PROGRAMME PROMPTS SILENT PROTEST

After attending presentations by Ilitha Labantu, the Grade 7, 8 and 9 pupils of Cannons Creek School held a silent protest along Forest Drive. The special programmes to raise awareness of Violence Against Women and Children and Bullying inspired the pupils to make posters and join in the awareness campaign by displaying their posters along Forest Drive. The Pinelands community responded positively by hooting and flashing their car lights to show their support. Ilitha Labantu is a social service and educational organization with a specific focus on addressing violence against women and children and supporting those affected by it. This is accomplished through individual and family counselling, workshops, skills training and empowerment, and acting as a trusted advisor in government and community processes. The client base is particularly focused amongst women living in townships and rural areas of South Africa. Ilitha Labantu is committed to empowerment through education and participatory practices.

Touring Namibia The Namibian Tour was an unforgettable adventure! The food, the people, games, laughter, photos and most importantly, the experience of, and interaction with nature, all made for a tremendous tour! Intro by Tanweer Mohamed, Grade 11.

Dune 45

In the July holidays a group of sixteen Grade 11 and 12 learners from Pinelands High School set off on a 12 day overland camping tour through Namibia. The tour was organised by two teachers along with the tour company, Africa4Us. Some of the sites visited were the Sesriem Canyon, Dune 45, Deadvlei, Spitzkoppe, Ai-Ais and the famous Fish River Canyon. The tour also swerved off the beaten track to include the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The group covered a distance of 4 244km during the tour. Many mornings involved waking up before sunrise to be on the road heading for the next spot. One such morning gave the group the opportunity to climb Dune 45 to watch the sunrise and then enjoy a delicious breakfast at the bottom, which had been prepared by the crew. The group bonded over nights spent under large African skies while sharing stories and playing games around the campfire. The tour was not only unforgettable, but also an educational experience that gave the group the opportunity to explore a country that is so rich in its beauty. Students returned with a newfound love and respect for nature, and many new friends.

FOOD FROM THE HEART By Heleen Meyer

Bean & veggie soup

Serves 6 Recipe from Make five/Maak vyf 250 ml (1 cup) dried black-eyed beans or butter beans 2 bay leaves 1 litre (4 cups) water 15 ml (1 tbsp) olive or avocado oil 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves of garlic, crushed 2 leeks, sliced 3 celery stalks with the leaves, thinly sliced 2 carrots, sliced diagonally 3 baby marrows, sliced diagonally 750 ml (3 cups) vegetable stock 375 ml (1½ cups) dry white wine 30 ml (2 tbsp) chopped fresh origanum 6 thick slices fresh ginger 150 g broccoli, cut into florets 100 g green beans, cut into thirds lemon juice, salt and pepper handful fresh basil leaves, chopped 1. Cover the dried beans with plenty of cold water and soak overnight. 2. Drain beans and place in a pot with one bay leaf and 750 ml (3 cups) water. Don’t add salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat and then reduce the heat. Cover with a lid and simmer for 1 hour. 3. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat and sauté onion, garlic and leeks until soft. Add celery, carrots and baby marrows and sauté for a few more minutes. 4. Stir in the rest of the water, the stock and the wine, remaining bay leaf, origanum and ginger and bring to a boil. 5. Drain the soaked beans and add, with the bay leaf, to the soup. Reduce the heat and simmer with the lid on for another 20 minutes or until the beans and veggies are just cooked. 6. Stir in the broccoli and green beans and simmer for 5-10 minutes or until the broccoli is just cooked. Season to taste. Serve with a bowl of fresh basil or Italian parsley at the table.

Many ways with beans I just love beans, in all their shapes, sizes and the many delicious meals you can prepare with them. There’s a wide variety of dried beans available and they are naturally high in fibre and other nutrients and low in salt and fat. Their neutral taste allows them to absorb the other flavours in a dish very well and explains why they are used in a range of cuisines, from spicy Mexican to Italian, French, Portuguese and definitely South African fare. Beans are regularly used as a plant-based source of protein and are popular in vegetarian dishes, but are equally delicious in meaty dishes or to bulk up stews and soups. Dried beans need soaking before they are cooked, but if you are in a hurry, a good variety of tinned beans are available. If you have not cooked dried beans before, do remember that it requires a bit of planning, as soaking overnight is necessary.

Soak them in enough cold water and then simmer in fresh water without any salt, vinegar or tomato, until the beans are soft. Adding any of these ingredients too soon, may prevent the beans from softening completely. And another tip, if you have gone to the effort of soaking and cooking beans and have some left over, remember that they freeze very successfully in the cooking liquid. This recipe is my version of an Italian minestrone with beans and has lots of veggies added at the end, to retain as much of their colour and texture as possible. The green veggies can even be swapped for other options like butternut, cauliflower or peas. And if you feel like having this tonight, but don’t have time to soak the beans, just add one or two 410g tins of beans or chickpeas to the soup in step three for a hearty supper.

Win in Women's month For Women’s Month, Heleen is running a competition to win a signed copy of her recipe book Make five/Maak vyf. To enter, send her an email with ‘Winning Make five’ in the subject line. The competition closes on 31 August – so don’t miss out. The winner will be contacted directly on 4 September. Follow Heleen on www.facebook.com/ HeleenMeyerFood or send an email to heleen.m@iafrica.com to order a book and to find out when the next cooking demonstration is taking place.
