THE MICAWBER PRINCIPLE: SOUND VICTORIAN ADVICE In this edition, we have a Your Money Special Feature. This brought to mind a very apt quote on the subject. To fully appreciate it though, you will have to cast your mind back to the pounds, shillings and pence of Victorian England. In Charles Dickens’ novel David Copperfield, we are introduced to a certain gentleman by the name of Mr Wilkins Micawber, who offers this sage advice to the young David Copperfield:
“Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery.” With The Micawber Principle, in just a few lines, Mr Micawber has very simply explained and dramatically illustrated the fundamental truth for good financial health – a concise Idiots Guide to Personal Finances. Consistently spending less than you earn is the basis of building wealth and well being in your life. It's a short hop to a few further truths: No matter how much you earn, expenditure is what really determines your financial happiness. It matters little whether your debt or saving are small or large. Seemingly small amounts either way are the difference between gradually building a heap of wealth or a mountain of debt. Any overspending has consequences when today's pleasure becomes tomorrow's misery. This all sounds obvious, but of course it is not so easy in practice with the myriad of goods and services being constantly marketed to us. Indeed, Mr Micawber himself was unable to follow his own advice and spent much of his life in miserable debt, lurching from one monetary crisis to the next. Happily, by the end of the novel he is able to reform and achieves financial success and happiness after finally following his own Micawber Principle. I hope you enjoy the edition!

This kingfisher is bigger than the Malachite kingfisher (last month) and smaller than the Giant kingfisher (next month). This all black and white bird is found on rivers, dams, coastal lagoons and even coast lines. The male and female markings are different, with the male having two bands across the chest and females having markings resembling a bra!!!! They are often seen in pairs and hover above the water before diving in and emerging with a fish. The kingfisher will beat the fish on a branch until it is soft enough to swallow. SAMURAI PINELANDS TEAM SWEDEN In July 2018, thirteen members of Samurai Pinelands will be representing South Africa at the KSI World Karate Championships in Stockholm, Sweden. This prestigious event is held every two years and is attended by more than 21 countries. Since 1998, Samurai Pinelands has produced six world champions, six silver and eight bronze medallists. The team members have a strict training regime of five days a week and are working hard to represent their country and club. These students will be doing their best to fund this trip on their own and the club is planning
fundraising events. The current team has three previous world champions and are looking to increase that number with the assistance of the head coach, Sensei Bradley Grant-Smith, 5th Dan and head coach of the South African team). Samurai Pinelands offers children and adult karate classes at Pinelands North Primary School. Furthermore, they have recently introduced adult kickboxing classes. Pinelands Samurai have a passion for martial arts and wellness and over 22 years of teaching experience.

The teachers love to welcome people of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities to the classes, which can be adapted to your needs. The Fitness League is a non-profit organisation promoting affordable classes to as many people as possible while keeping the fees low. Members are not locked into contracts or cancellation fees The classes take place at the Methodist church on Tuesday evening at 5.30 pm, Wednesday morning at 8.30 am and Friday morning at 8.30 am. There is also an Active Seniors class at 9.45am on a Friday. The classes are mainly exercise, part dancerhythmic movement which both strengthens and energises - all done to music with the emphasis on having fun while getting fit. After warming up, the structured exercises ensure that all parts of the body are stretched and toned while keeping the spine flexible and the stomach muscles toned. The league was created in England in 1925 by Mary Bagot Stack who had a vision of “A league of women who will renew their energy in themselves and for themselves every day“. She believed completely in the power of women to make the world a better place to live in. There are now many classes in the UK as well as Ireland, Scotland, New Zealand and South Africa. The League in the UK produces a show at the Royal Albert Hall every five years to demonstrate their capabilities and celebrate their involvement. WHO IS KILLING OUR TREES? CAMPHOR TREE BARK STRIPPED IN WELWYN WAY A very distressing sight greeted Greg and Lara Espitalier-Noel of Welwyn Avenue earlier this year when they noticed that the precious Camphor tree that they planted 20 years ago, and have cherished as they watched it grow, has been maliciously stripped of its bark! The tree has in effect been "girdled" - also known as "ring barked," and will now die as the bark is responsible for a number of essential functions including transport of nutrients and protection against loss of water. "Camphor has been described to have a very balancing effect, but is also known to have other homeopathic properties. Previously all parts of the trees were used for camphor oil extraction, but today, only the leaves are used, allowing for recurring harvest without killing the goose that lays the golden egg, so to speak. Unfortunately this is not practised by the person who has completely debarked our tree, in essence ringing it’s death knell," says Lara. "Trees are life giving, and vital for our health providing oxygen, storing carbon, stabilising the soil supplying us with food. They help us heal and aid concentration by reducing mental fatigue. Patients with views of trees out their windows heal faster and children with ADHD show fewer symptoms when they have access to nature. Pinelanders have been planting trees to retain that Garden City feel that made our suburb so leafy and green. Please look out for people damaging trees in your neighbourhood in this way," pleads Lara. (Girdling is against the law and can be reported to the authorities).

The Successful Maths Teacher Article by: Mike Van Haght High School Principal Cannons Creek Independent School One of the challenges for any high school principal is finding good maths teachers. Complicating the matter is that society often “demands” that all pupils do maths, meaning high schools need more maths teachers than teachers of any other subject, with the exception of language teachers. Good maths teachers are few and far between, so it is imperative that when schools appoint someone, they appoint the right person. What makes for a “successful” maths teacher? Appoint a real maths teacher - not a rugby coach who also teaches a bit of maths; not a retired engineer/accountant who now wants to teach, but a person whose career dream is to be a good maths teacher. Often we are tempted to kill two birds with one stone and end up appointing someone who can fill a few gaps on the staff. Your teaching staff is your school’s greatest asset. If a good maths teacher also offers a few other competencies, that is a bonus, not the reason they should be appointed. Knowing maths is important but so too is knowing the syllabus. The syllabus document does not always list what has to be taught in the best sequence. A good maths teacher adapts the syllabus order where necessary, emphasising the most important topics, and sometimes swapping work from one grade to another.
Make sure they know the basics back to front. Make sure the basics established in Grades 8 and 9 are solid. There is no point rushing through the basics or spending time on frivolous maths topics which have no bearing on future years’ work. Rather trim what is taught in grades 8 and 9, ensuring that the pupils are ready for the more demanding work to come in the senior years. Maths must be taught every school day. Schools need to ensure that sufficient time is properly timetabled for maths. There is no point having double lessons on certain days and no maths lesson on other days. Find “extra” time for maths. One extra maths lesson per two week cycle over five years makes a massive difference. Maths must be practised, over and over, every day. There is a well-known saying and it applies perfectly to maths, “Practise until you can’t get it wrong”. With practice comes understanding, not the other way round. So often, pupils (and parents) hide behind the excuse for homework not being done because the child did not understand the work. A good maths teacher will not accept this excuse. A good maths teacher will want to see where the pupils made an honest attempt to try doing the homework. To be well understood, maths needs to be grappled with and that’s why good maths
teachers set homework every day. This homework needs to be done – properly, not in a rush simply to get it done. Testing. Regular testing is essential. Tests should be marked and returned to pupils as soon as possible. The ideal is to set two tests on every major section of work. The first test should be a tutorial test. This entails covering the work comprehensively in class, with pupils having been given a clear method of doing the work. Pupils are then given a worksheet listing many examples covering every type of example that needs to be mastered, along with the answers and an opportunity to confer with a teacher about questions they are struggling with. After a week or so, the tutorial test (set using questions taken directly from the worksheet) is then written. No one should have any reason to fail this test as they were given the questions and answers beforehand. The second test is the normal, unseen test, with new questions, based around the questions on the worksheet. Differentiate. Teachers, parents and pupils need to understand that maths abilities vary. Just like everyone is not artistic, similarly, not everyone is cut out to do maths or score a distinction in maths. A good maths teachers will “stretch” those capable of a distinction (these require LOTS of work), and for those who battle with the subject, allow them to focus only on what they are capable of. Class atmosphere. The task of the maths teacher is not to be your child’s buddy. Maths requires self-discipline and hard work. Good maths teachers establish a classroom routine, an atmosphere of work, a place where it is ok to get things wrong – provided you tried to the best of your ability. The maths teacher’s job is not to be popular – that will come when your child starts achieving.

The Alpaca Loom Coffee shop and weaving studio
Comparing the differences between alpacas , llamas and camels is easily done at the Alpaca Loom where you will see all three varieties which all belong to the camelid family. The highlight of our day was taking the alpacas for a walk - a bit like having a large woolly dog on a lead. Our alpaca companion was called Boris and spent most of the time trying to get to the front of the pack! The short walk goes from the shady area under the tearoom deck around a nearby dam and back to where one is able to feed the alpacas before guiding them through an obstacle course which includes mock bridges, and a twisty pole run as seen in dog shows. We didn't experience any kicking or spitting! The barn tour took us down the hill to where the newborn alpacas are sheltered. It is amazing to see the independence of a 24 hour old "cria" (baby alpaca), and also the variety of colours found naturally - meaning that is it not necessary to colour the wool used for weaving. At the Alpaca loom the wool is sheared once a year and sent to Worcester for spinning, and then it is returned for weaving. One can watch two weaving looms in action inside the tea/wool shop. There is also a comparison of the different wools from alpacas, sheep, llama and angora. The tea room serves delicious cakes and pies, along with very good coffee at a reasonable price. Enjoy a break on the deck with a view across to Table Mountain before exploring the shop.

SHAKESPEARE SCHOOLS FESTIVAL SOUTH AFRICA AT THE BAXTER FROM 7 TO 12 MAY The 8th Shakespeare Schools Festival South Africa (SSF SA) continues its run in Cape Town at the Baxter Theatre from 7 to 12 May, after completing a run at the Artscape Theatre from 19 to 21 April. The Shakespeare Schools Festival is an education program aimed at improving language and social skills through the Performing Arts. It is Educape’s flagship initiative that was piloted in 2010 by Kseniya Filinova-Bruton with the objective of strengthening the link between the Arts and education. Since inception, the SSF SA has grown from an event that attracted 20 learners, to drawing approximately 2 000 youths across the Western Cape, Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Staging a Shakespeare play in a professional theatre is a challenge to be relished and the SSF SA is an ideal way for young people seeking to explore their potential in a fun, developmental

The SSF SA is fully interactive and provides guidance and the resources through scripts, training, frame work and feedback that equips learners and educators to successfully direct and perform Shakespearean plays from the first line to the final bow.
Schools get to prepare and perform 30-minute abridged versions of the plays and those taking part this year in the Western Cape schools are participating from all over the Western Cape Metropole and as far afield as Hermanus. Exciting news is that the De La Bat School for the Deaf will make their stage debut with their version of Romeo and Juliet in South African sign language (SASL). For the hearing audience there will be an introduction of characters and their sign names, but the idea is for the hearing audience to experience the deaf world. There will be no live interpretation and the audience will have 30 minutes to see and feel what it is like to be deaf. There will be music in the play, so not all of it is in silence.

Tally Sticks Commonly used in medieval Europe a stick (squared hazelwood sticks were most common) was marked with a system of notches and then split lengthwise. This way the two halves both record the same notches and each party to the transaction received one half of the marked stick as proof.
THE FIRE AT THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT
The most prominent and best recorded use of the split tally stick or "nick-stick" being used as a form of currency was when Henry I introduced the tally stick system in medieval England in around 1100. He would accept the tally stick only for taxes, and it was a tool of the Exchequer for the collection of taxes by local sheriffs (tax farmers "farming the shire") for seven centuries. The split tally of the Exchequer was in continuous use until 1826. In 1834 tally sticks representing six centuries worth of financial records were ordered to be burned in a stove in the Houses of Parliament. The resulting fire set the chimney ablaze and then spread until most of the building was destroyed. This event was described by Charles Dickens in an 1855 article on administrative reform.

The debt of the Crown also played a role in the formation of the Bank of England at the end of the 17th century. In 1697, the bank issued £1 million worth of stock in exchange for £800,000 worth of tallies at par and £200,000 in bank notes. This new stock was said to be "engrafted". The government promised not only to pay the Bank interest on the tallies subscribed but to redeem them over a period of years. The "engrafted" stock was then cancelled simultaneously with the redemption.

Are you underinsured? AVOID BEING UNDERINSURED
One of the biggest insurance mistakes that consumers make is not understanding the critical difference between market and insurance replacement values of their insured possessions. In not understanding this difference, consumers are left with an increased risk of underinsurance that could lead to huge financial losses in the event of an insurance claim. It is imperative that consumers conduct regular valuations on their prized possessions in an effort to decrease the possibility of underinsurance.
MARKET VALUE VS REPLACEMENT VALUE
Different items’ replacement values fluctuate continuously depending on the type of product being insured. Any item that has been imported or bought overseas is very much dependent on the value of the Rand. Should the insured item get lost or damaged, the Rand’s value directly impacts the replacement value meaning that the cost to replace the item is often higher. Conversely, depreciating values could also mean that items could equally be over-insured, depending on the value of the foreign currency.
KEEP YOUR PURCHASE SLIPS
Many consumers don’t take price inflation into consideration. For example, a piece of electronic equipment or an item of jewellery that cost R1 000 ten years ago could easily cost more than double that price in today’s market. It is advisable for consumers to keep their slips as proof of payment for any purchase made, either locally or internationally. Consumers should update their insurance policies continuously to reflect the value of their assets. This will ease the process when it comes to claiming and avoid the risk of financial loss.

Homeowners are at an even bigger risk of being underinsured, as the value of their home increases every year. The updated value of a home should be reflected in the homeowner’s insurance policy on an annual basis. A common mistake people make is to insure their home for the market value i.e. what they paid to purchase the property. Home insurance should actually be calculated on what it would cost to rebuild the property. In the unfortunate event of a fire or a flood where a house
with the value of R1 million was only insured for R500 000 gets badly damaged, the homeowner will only receive half of their insurance claim, as the policyholder was underinsured by 50%. It is also important for consumers to update their home insurance policy to reflect additions after renovation. Even security improvements could change the insured value, or even alter the premium paid, so it is important that these are communicated to their broker and insurance provider.

Retirement villages are a popular choice among retirees as they provide facilities, essential services, amenities and security within a like-minded community. What are the options?
• Sectional Title
Buying sectional title affords the retiree full ownership of the unit. Registration of the property takes place through the Deeds Office, and the purchaser is liable for bond registration, transfer duties and conveyancing fees. The Section Titles Act of 1986, requires that a Body Corporate – consisting of all the unit owners - be formed. The Body Corporate assumes full responsibility for the day-to-day running and financial management of the common property, although this often results in slow and arduous decision-making. Importantly, the developer of the sectional title scheme bears no responsibility for the ongoing maintenance and cost management once the development has been completed, and are therefore not incentivised to build ongoing cost-efficiency and levy affordability into their developments. On the other hand, a distinct advantage of sectional title ownership is that the property forms part of one’s estate and can be bequeathed to one’s heirs.
• Share Block
When buying into a share block scheme the retiree purchases shares in the company that owns the retirement village. The retiree signs a Use and Occupation Agreement entitling him to occupy the unit for as long as he owns the shares. A share block transfer is not registered through the Deeds Office, although transfer duty on the purchase price of the shares is payable to the Receiver of Revenue. Costs are therefore much lower than purchasing a sectional title unit. The directors of the share block company

take all management decisions leaving shareholders with very little say as to the how their scheme is run. Each shareholder contributes towards a levy fund which is used to cover the running costs of the complex. Repairs or maintenance of the shareholder’s unit remain the financial responsibility of the shareholder. Whilst the share block company is obliged to insure the property, each shareholder is responsible for insuring the contents of their unit. It is important to note that financial institutions generally do not provide finance to buy into share block schemes as there is no security against the loan.
• Life Rights
Ideal for those who have less capital to invest. This scheme involves the retiree purchasing the right to use the unit/ apartment for the remainder of his life. In the case of couples, the right to use the unit ceases upon the death of the second spouse or partner, and this right is inalienable. Because purchasing into a life rights scheme does not involve any transfer of property, no bond registration, transfer fees or VAT is payable meaning that there are very few cost barriers to entry. The developer remains the sole owner of each unit and carries the responsibility for maintenance and upkeep. Usually the monthly levies and administration costs are lower, and developers are obliged by law to provide a two-year cost estimate in respect of levies, making life rights schemes well worth considering. Upon the death of the retiree, the right to use the unit/apartment reverts back to the owner of the complex who can then resell it. Upon resale, the deceased’s estate will receive the original purchase price plus a percentage of the net profit which is determined at the time of purchase.

RETIREMENT HOME At retirement, many people sell their family homes and buy into a comfortable retirement complex. Sectional Title, Life Rights and Share Block schemes may offer similar facilities and amenities, but the financing and legislation of these three options are significantly different. Before choosing your retirement complex, you should consider: • Who is the developer of the complex, and what is his professional reputation? How long has he been operating? • Have you seen the financial statements of the development? Do you understand the profit model and is the scheme viable? • What are the current levies payable, and what have the historical levy increases been? • What services do the monthly levies cover, and what is the quality of these services? • What exactly is meant by 24-security? Does this simply mean a perimeter fence, or does it entail the full suite of security services? • Have you met other residents of the complex? • What frail care and assisted living facilities does the complex offer, and what are the costs? • What happens if you require frail care facilities and your partner does not? • Do the advertised nursing services come at an additional cost? • If you are buying off-plan, do you understand the square meterage of the unit you are buying? • Does the complex offer laundry and housecleaning services, or are these additional costs? • Are you permitted to have visitors stay over or do you need to obtain written permission?

Exploring the coast of Norway chasing the Northern Lights Fulfilling a dream to see the ethereal Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) we undertook a trip of a lifetime in January this year, experiencing winter at it’s best in Norway. Our tour was offered by Hurtigruten - on a working ship doing postal runs along the coast of Norway. It is a comfortable 9 deck ship, with good accommodation and excellent crew. Meals included buffet breakfasts, lunches, three buffet dinners, with all other dinners at set served tables including a delicious captain's dinner, with no special dress code. We began our trip with a KLM flight to Amsterdam, then on to the World Heritage City of Bergen.

We rode the Floibanen funicular up the mountain, for a magnificent panoramic view of the city and surrounding coast and fjords. After a tourist walkabout we visited the historic buildings in Bryggens and the museum, which are under restoration as they are wooden structures and have stood for hundreds of years. The weather was cold with black ice and snow on the sidewalk – which was super slippery. Then it rained on our second day, which Bergen is well known for – no water shortage there!

THE TOUR BEGINS ON THE MS TROLLFJORD
Boarding the MS Trollfjord, one of the vessels in the Hurtigruten fleet, we looked forward to the 11 day voyage. The ship did various short stops along the coast, travelling northwards until our first disembarkment at Alesund – a quaint art nouveau town, where we took a short icy evening walk on the pier in Kristiansund.
DAY TWO IN TRONDHEIM
Shortly after breakfast we disembarked at Trondheim in the pouring rain and found our way through the snow and black ice to see the Nidaros Cathedral. Prompted by the slippery black ice surface we invested in some crampons (ice spikes) for our shoes. This city was founded by the Viking King Olav Trygvason.
DAY THREE: CROSSING THE ARCTIC CIRCLE
The crossing of the line ceremony was held on board between Nesna and Ornes 66° 33´N. As we went over the Arctic Circle "King Neptune" celebrated the event by giving passengers an ice bath Brrrr! There was a competition to guess the exact time we would cross the line. Special Arctic stamps and postcards were available. Then arriving Shelley having fun in the Troll Forest Bergen, between the Floibanen upper station and Floysletten.

By Shelley and Dave Hendrikse at Bodo we explored for three hours before returning to the ship and catching our first exciting glimpse of an aurora that night.
DAY FOUR: FINNSNES - SUNRISE AT 11AM!
We saw spectacular snow covered scenery on the short stops up to Finnsnes where we stopped for half an hour. Sailing on, we arrived in the capital of the Arctic, Tromso, at 2:30pm. There was only half an hour of sunlight before night fell at 3pm and we window shopped in the beautifully lit city. There are always various tours available at each stop, and in Tromso one could do City Tours, dog-sledding, Polar history walks and Sami Adventure excursions. After an amazing dinner on board, we experienced a fantastic aurora display of rolling and dancing cloud-like scenes. Auroras are caused by strong electrical storms in the distance and are best viewed in a dark area. These cloud-like forms are white in colour to the naked eye, but through a camera lens they are green, pink yellow and purple, but no flash must be used. We managed to get some photographs from the ship's deck.
DAY FIVE: CONVOY TO NORTH CAPE
Disembarking at Honningsvag we joined an excursion to North Cape. So much snow had fallen that we had to have a snowplough clear the road and drive in convoy due to avalanche warnings. North Cape is the most northern point of Europe’s mainland. There was thick snow and freezing air and again dark by 3pm. Later that evening we were lucky enough to experience more auroras from the deck.
DAY SIX: KIRKENES - VERY COLD AT -18 OC
Kirkenes was a winter wonderland and very cold. Walking through the streets and houses it was interesting to see how the

older folk negotiated the snow covered streets with their electric "Zimmer ski's". We came across a bomb shelter built during World War ll. Kirkenes marks the end of the northern run and here the ship turns about and begins the return journey. Continuing on to Vardo, some passengers and crew were brave enough to take a dip in the icy Arctic Ocean - not us! We visited the World War ll Vardohus fortress built in 1737, in impeccable condition and covered in snow, which was illuminated. Vardo is Norway’s easternmost town on an island and has an underwater tunnel link to the mainland. The excursions offered here were Russian Border, Snowmobile Safari, Snow Hotel, and Husky Adventure. Next stop was Batsfjord which has a sheltered location in the fjord and is ranked one of the ports to land the most fish.
DAY SEVEN: HAMMERFEST AND TROMSO
We arrived in the northern most town in the world, Hammerfest, and visited the museum in the Polar Bear Club. Then we went to the Museum of Reconstruction after World War ll. Docking late at night in Tromso some passengers undertook an excursion to a midnight concert in the Cathedral.
DAY EIGHT: ICE SCULPTURES AT LOFOTEN

DAY NINE :BACK OVER THE ARCTIC CIRCLE
Crossing back over the Arctic Circle, passengers were doctored with a spoon of cod liver oil, to celebrate the event. Agggg! We managed to photograph the Arctic Circle marker and the Seven Sisters mountain range as we passed. We docked at Bronnoysund in the afternoon, which was covered in snow after a recent snowfall with black ice on the sidewalks. Our ship sailed mostly in and out of the fjords but crossed open sea at times which had rough water.
DAY TEN: TRONDHEIM
We took a leisurely stroll through Norway's third largest city - Trondheim. Then we sailed across the open Hustadvika Sea.
DAY ELEVEN: BACK TO BERGEN
We arrived back at Bergen at 2:30pm and took a transfer bus to the Scandic Neptune Hotel. Our journey done and magic, snow filled memories made! A voyage on this fleet is highly recommended. The Magic Ice Gallery at Lofoten.
Our southbound trip took us slowly through Risoyrenna, a three mile long dredged channel, to the harbour. Then on to Stokmarknes and the Hurtigruten Museum. Then we sailed to the mouth of the Trollfjord, which was only visible by spotlight and could not be entered after dark. At Svolvaer some passengers took the option to ride four hours on horseback under the night sky to the next harbour at Lofoten! Here we visited the Magic Ice Gallery and marvelled

KSENIYA FILINOVABRUTON Growing up in Russia in a family steeped in theatre and drama, Pinelander Kseniya developed the perfect foundation and enthusiasm for her current position as founder and Managing Director of NPO Educape, and subsequently as the Festival Director for SSF SA Shakespeare Schools Festival South Africa. This year 104 schools will be participating in the festival. Local performances at the Artscape in April will be followed by shows at the Baxter Theatre from 7 to 12 May.
FURTHER QUALIFICATIONS
In 2002 Kseniya's mother encouraged her to complete a formal degree with the aim of becoming a professional theatre director. Free education at The State University of Arts and Culture in St Petersburg, Russia, meant that Kseniya could complete a five year long-distance course, returning to Russia twice a year for two months to complete the practicals, during which time she could visit her mother and take part in local traditional plays - often playing the

part of the Snow Maiden who saves "Father Frost" (Russian Santa Claus).
EDUCAPE AND CAPE TOWN
Escaping the Durban humidity and moving to Cape Town in 2005, Kseniya met and married Bryan, a creative art director with his own business. They have two children, Sebastian who is 10 years old and Kira who is 7 years old. Kseniya's passion for drama and its link to education has remained strong and, when her children were just a few months old, she returned to her teaching job in the drama department of Wynberg Boys’ High School. In the meantime the NPO Educape Trust was established in 2007 with the primary aim of launching the Shakespeare Schools Festival, giving learners from every background the opportunity to perform in a professional stage environment. Kseniya now works full time with Educape and SSF SA.
GREAT MOMENTS OF THE SSF SA
In April 2016, former political prisoner Sonny Venkatrathnam donated the book that he had been allowed to read when he was incarcerated on Robben Island. It was the Complete Works of Shakespeare, which had been read and appreciated by many of the prisoners, who had signed the book next to their favourite verses. The occasion marked the 400 year anniversary
of Shakespeare's death. It was an honour for Kseniya to take some pupils from Vista Nova School to Robben Island to perform the chosen Shakespeare texts.
EXPANDING TO SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOLS.
"We are pleased that this year the De La Bat school for the deaf will be presenting their 30 minute version of Romeo and Juliet, accompanied by South African Sign Language. WHAT IS THE SSF SA?
With a passion to teach theatre and drama, Kseniya and her mother developed a syllabus incorporating The Acting Method pioneered by Konstantin Staniskavski, which focuses on realism. Kseniya then formulated the abridged 30 minute versions of Shakespeare for school plays, working with the Shakespeare Schools Foundation in the UK. Today there are 140 schools throughout South Africa and 2000 students participating in SSF SA. (See more on page 10 of this edition).

FROM RUSSIA TO AFRICA
Life in Russia was very different for Kseniya as a child compared to her life now. Her father was a theatre director and her mother an actress, and the family lived in flats where the bathroom and kitchen were shared between 5 families. Her first acting part was in the Shakespearean comedy Twelfth Night where, at the age of three, she acted the part of Viola saying one line "I'm coming Sebastian". When Kseniya went to Colorado, America, as an exchange student aged 15, she was amazed at the spacious way of life and was excited to see another world outside her homeland. The travel bug bit, and after graduating from The State Russian Art School, Kseniya travelled to Namibia in 1995 and then to Durban - her "gap year" had turned into 7 years!

THE WATER CRISIS CONTINUES Although Capetonians are well aware of the water shortage caused by our extended drought, we must guard against becoming complacent when the winter rains begin to fall. One winter of good rains will not be enough to fill our dams. Theewaterskloof Dam has dropped to the 10% level where pumping out of the dam becomes problematic. In an attempt to augment the water for the pumping stations to be able to operate, boreholes are currently being drilled to bring water to the surface of the dam. We are all urged to keep our usage of municipal water at or below 50 litres per person per day.

It is wonderful that there are so many people putting an effort into making water saving an easier and more efficient every day way of life. Today a Western Cape plumber, Charles Watt, spoke on Cape Talk about a Wattapac bladder used to empty the water from geysers before repair/replacement. Afterwards the water is pumped back into the repaired geyser - no wastage!
PRESSURE REDUCTION
The City of Cape Town has begun activated water rationing by reducing the water pressure and forcing a lower water usage by Cape Town residents and businesses. The City warns that households may experience irregular supply in the early mornings (5am to 9am); and in the early evenings (5pm to 9 pm). An area may have their pressure reduced until the water usage falls into the acceptable range. For this reason a planned timetable is not possible. Therefore the City advises residents to have a small supply of drinking water available at all times in case the flow stops altogether for short periods. See www.capetown.gov.za.

FOOD FROM THE HEART By Nina Timm Cook, Teacher, Blogger and author of Easy Cooking from Nina's Kitchen and Maklike Etes uit Nina se Kombuis!
Serves 4
Ingredients 1 kg pork fillet 1 x 10 cm piece fresh ginger – peeled and cut into thin match sticks 4 dry chillies 45 ml vegetable oil 30 ml soy sauce 30 ml honey juice and zest of 1 lime 10 ml fish sauce white and black sesame seeds for serving For the bok choy 250 g bok choy washed & halved lengthwise 1 – 2 cloves garlic 15 ml vegetable oil 10 ml sesame oil a dash soy sauce
Method 1. Pat the pork fillet dry with kitchen towels and then place in a ziploc bag with the vegetable oil, chillies, soy, ginger, lime juice and lime zest. Marinade the meat for at least 10 minutes. 2. Heat a pan on the stove and add a little oil. Once the pan is hot, add the pork. Sauté the pork, turning it all the time. Do this for about 5 - 10 minutes or until the pork is cooked. 3. Add the juices from the ziploc bag, and the honey, and quickly let it reduce and the meat just brown on all sides. 4. Place on a plate and cover with foil to rest. Just before serving, sprinkle the sesame seeds over the pork. 5. Heat another pan and add the garlic, oil, chillies and bok choy and stir fry until the bok choy is cooked but still has a crunch to it. Drizzle with a little soy and serve with the pork!
