THE MUSIC OF SPRING

Cape Spurfowl

So, the first few spring flowers are making their appearance on the verges around the village. After a few really cold weeks I can at last look forward to the prospect of some warmer and longer days with Spring just around the corner. It's hard to imagine life in shorts, T-shirt and slops after months of jumpers, coats and blankets, but I have pleasant memories of living light and can't wait to get that feeling again. Goodbye fire wood, hello braai wood.

Another bird to fall “fowl” of name changes, the Cape Spurfowl was previously known as the Cape Francolin. The male is much larger than the female. They occur in pairs or family groups. Their main food in suburbia is bulbs, seeds and berries and insects during the breeding season. Anyone who has planted bulbs in their garden that Spurfowl frequent can attest to their ability to find the bulbs, long before they have a chance to grow. They normally lay a clutch of 6-8 eggs, hidden under a bush. The chicks are very susceptible to predation from cats and birds of prey, normally reducing the brood to two to three chicks. They have a loud call and males can be very aggressive towards intruding males with chases being fast and furious.

Despite lower rainfall in July and August, the early winter rains have at least left our dams twice as full as they were this time last year. Here's hoping that we have some good late winter rain to take us out of the danger zone for the drier Summer months ahead. There are quite a few articles relating to music in this edition. While we all have different tastes in music, the love of it is one of the few things in life that is universal to all people on the planet. Perhaps the reason for this is given in Victor Hugo's quote: "Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent." It gives us a way of feeling and "saying" things which words or thoughts cannot. After a lifetime of enjoyment of music, I have resolved to learn how to play an instrument this year. It is something I have always had in the back of my mind, but I think I must now finally get round to taking the plunge. I am going to try my hand with the guitar, I think, and hope to gain some little mastery during the more laid back days of summer when my hands and fingers have thawed out. Glancing across to John McFarlane's bird column, I see that the Francolin (now a Cape Spurfowl) is featured this month. We have an entertaining pair of them which make regular visits for breakfast, teatime and lunch and unashamedly demand seeds, even marching into the house to find a 'waiter' to serve it up for them. I suspect that they are up to the same antics at all the houses up the street. I hope you enjoy the edition!

The High School Sports Co-ordinator Mr Matthew Storti reports that the Cannons Creek U16 hockey tour was a huge success: "On Wednesday 8 August, our U16 boys and girls hockey teams flew to Johannesburg for the 2018 hockey tour. They stayed at South Downs College where they trained and took part in skills clinics every morning and then played matches in the afternoons. Players and coaches worked with Michelle Joubert, who is South Africaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s FIH (International Hockey Federation) representative for umpiring. She has umpired at the Champions Challenge, World Cup and Olympic games".

SOUTH AFRICANS SHINE IN STOCKHOLM

In July 2018, nine members of Samurai Pinelands Dojo attended the Kimura Shukokai World Karate Championships in Stockholm, Sweden. Over 20 countries took part and South Africa won the event winning 13 gold medals. Sensei Bradley Grant-Smith, competed in the Men's Kata division, with a total of 76 contestants and placed second, losing by 1 vote. He also competed in the Men's Middleweight Kumite and won all nine fights without loss to become the KSI Karate Men's Middleweight World Champion. He captained the South Africa Men's A Team to third place, losing narrowly to Portugal. Jason Hillebrand fought in the under 21 Men's Kumite category, with a total of 28 contestants and won third place. PNPS SOCCER TOUR TO KNYSNA Pinelands North Primary School U13 Soccer team took part in the annual Backward Point Knysna Soccer Festival played at the Rheenendal fields outside Knysna. Five matches were played on Friday 22nd June and the team performed well losing only one match displaying great team spirit and camaraderie. They ate dinner at the waterfront that evening, mingling with the other teams from the festival. On Saturday 23rd June they played another five matches and continued to play well, only losing one match.

PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL SUPPORTS MANDELA DAY On Mandela Day this year, PNPS reached out to Mokone Primary, inviting the Gr R â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Gr 3 pupils to join in with a day filled with creative tasks, sporty games, indoor games, construction games, dancing and getting to know each other better. Lunch was provided for pupils and staff at first break. The Nedbank Team joined in the different activities on the day. Other activities on Mandela Day included a visit by the senior choir to the senior citizens of Kensington Old Age Home, where they sang to the residents and delivered care packs and hand-made cards from the PNPS Grade 4s. The Grade 5s and some PNPS volunteers added their contribution to Mandela day by spending the whole day knitting

squares for blankets, which will be donated later this year. Last but not least some of the PNPS staff went to visit the children at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital and donated toys, colouring books and treats. DANCE CO TEAM WINS FIRST PRIZE AT WORLD DANCE MOVEMENT COMPETITION AT CASTELLANA GROTTO, ITALY

More than 25 countries participated in the World Dance Movement workshops and dance competitions in July in Italy this year. The students have a wonderful learning and cultural experience attending the workshops in all forms of dance such as ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary and theatre dance. The Dance Co students worked on their choreography for the international dance competitions for six months before the two week tour which visited Rome, the Amalfi Coast and the Puglia area of Italy. Congratulations to the Dance Co team for winning first prize in the Theatre Dance section and for the recognition of their creativeness and costume design. Congratulations also to Megan Smith from Pinelands and Alice Parkington who won second prize for a duet in Modern Dance.

PAYING IT FORWARD Following the Mandela Day activities in July, when we fed under privileged school children and our local SAWAS old age home with soup and bread rolls, we entered a competition “What did you do for your 67 minutes” and we won R5 000 for a charity of our choice. We chose the SOS Village Children’s home and presented them with the cheque on 7 August. EDUCATION COMES ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC Brendan Carroll Principal, Pinehurst Primary School

Life without music and sound would be like living in a silent movie. Each one of us has a treasure chest of memories and deep emotions connected to music and specific songs. These memories and associated emotions are often released on hearing the songs - even years later. I enjoy Wikipedia’s definition: “Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound organized in time. The common elements of music are pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture.”

MUSIC IS FOUND IN EVERY CULTURE

Every culture for as far as history stretches has and does produce music. We are created to express ourselves through music, dance and song. This alone should make us stop and ponder the significance and power of music in human development. What effect then does the lack of music have on our development as human beings, on our society and our cultural identity?

THE EFFECT OF MUSIC ON OUR LIVES

A simple Internet search under, "Benefits of Music” yields many articles which list amongst others that music: improves mood, reduces stress, improves memory, eases pain, provides comfort, improves cognition, soothes premature babies, helps autistic children, improves sleep, boosts the immune system, increases verbal intelligence, raises IQ and academic performance.

MUSIC & THE BRAIN'S LANGUAGE CENTRE

Learning to play a musical instrument

is beneficial for children’s general development as well as their education. Balance, co-ordination, posture and crossing of the midline are some of the areas exercised and developed during the playing of musical instruments. It is also auditory, visual as well as kinaesthetic. Studies point to the fact that the earlier a child learns a second language, the easier they find learning new languages later on in life. It has been shown that the language centre of the brain is activated when listening to music. Learning to play a musical instrument is like learning a second language which, if learnt at a young age, will give an advantage when learning languages later on in life. Reading a music score requires the ability to track and ‘look ahead’ just the same as we do when reading a book. It also helps to develop comprehension skills as the sound of the music being performed must ‘make sense’, and correspond to the notes being played.

THE LINK BETWEEN MATHS AND MUSIC

The parallels between music and mathematics are widely known and published. Both are highly organised with definite relationships and structures. There are set periods and ratios between musical notes and re-occurring patterns just like there are in maths. The famous Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras once said, “There is geometry in the humming of the strings, there is music in the spacing of the spheres.” Music is entirely intertwined with mathematics, so much so that even a basic major chord can be described mathematically.

MUSIC AND EQ

Music not only benefits us scholastically, it also helps to develop EQ and emotional well-being in children. Learning to play a musical instrument doesn’t just happen. It takes discipline, perseverance and good work ethic with a regular practice routine developing character. Music is a vehicle

through which children are able to express a wide range of emotions. Performing requires self-confidence and the ability to keep going and recover in the event of playing a wrong note. As children develop the ability to express themselves musically, they also develop a stronger identity.

MUSIC AS A TEAM SPORT

Singing in choirs, playing in orchestras, bands or ensembles is a ‘team sport’. It requires an ability to be sensitive and listen to what the rest of the group is playing and to add your part at the right time to create the whole. Patience and empathy is required if one or a few members of the group is taking longer to master the piece than the rest. Humility is needed as musicians follow the leader/conductor and submit to their interpretation of the music. Making music is also fun and draws people to you.

LET'S BRING MUSIC BACK TO SCHOOLS

A school without music feels ‘lifeless’. During the 1990’s specialist music and art teachers were removed from the staffing establishments of our public primary schools. Music education has since become the realm of the elite who can fund it through fees. There is an ongoing struggle for the recognition of the value and legitimacy of music as a school subject. Music teachers are now frequently viewed as ‘part-timers’ or ‘addons’ often not properly integrated into school programmes and staff rooms. Fewer musicians than previously are choosing to study a degree towards music education and thus, the specialist music teacher is becoming more difficult to find.

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE

It is never too late for us to embrace and to bring the beauty of music and the arts back into the fabric of our society and educational environment. It is never too late for us to allow education to come alive with the sound of music. 

OLDEST INDEPENDENT SCHOOL CELEBRATES 170 YEARS St George’s Grammar School in Mowbray, recognised as the oldest independent school in Southern Africa, celebrates 170 years since it was founded on 11th April 1848 by Bishop Robert Gray. The original location of the school was on the site of the current St George's Cathedral at the top of Adderley Street, Cape Town. In 1904 the school moved into a new building designed by Herbert Baker to make way for the Cathedral. THE PURCHASE OF BLOEMENDAL ESTATE

In 1936 Reverend Cecil Tugman, Headmaster of St George’s Grammar School, noticed an advert in the Cape Times announcing the sale of the historic Dutch residence Bloemendal with land alongside the Liesbeek River in Mowbray. Realising this could be the answer for sports fields and a boarding establishment, he and his wife used their savings to purchase the Bloemendal Estate in Mowbray. 9:11 AM Tugman wrote to the land owner NW Dent asking him to accept the offer of £7 250 “respectfully begging him to consider his request favourably as the school’s funds were limited.” (An excerpt from the Press reader March 2018). Happily the offer was accepted and in 1938 the newly built wing for boarders on the Bloemendal Estate was opened by Archbishop Francis Phelps.

In 1950 another wing was added to the school in Adderley street but the school longed for a solution to the daily commute for boarders from Mowbray to Adderley Street. It was however, only in 1973 that the school amalgamated its classes onto one campus at Bloemendal, under the headmastership of GD Dods. of the organization Read to Rise presented the certificates and prizes. In his short address, Roscoe inspired all present with his account of how he, as Programme Manager, is involved in the challenging but uplifting work being done by Read to Rise. This annual event is sponsored by The Friends of Pinelands Library who also made a donation to Read to Rise.

PINELANDER As part of her fiftieth year bucket-list, Julie decided to record a CD entitled "Some of my favourite songs". Her message to others is that nothing is impossible if you have a dream, work hard towards your goal, stay focused and remember to pray like it depends on God and work like it depends on you.” THE IDEA OF RECORDING A CD IS BORN

Whilst Julie has no official voice training per se, she has a long history of choral singing, starting in the Tygerberg Children’s Choir whilst attending Boston Primary School. She has been singing with the Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town since she was a student at UCT. The current choir trainer, Richard Haigh, suggested at an annual voice assessment that Julie should consider undertaking some voice training for her own pleasure. This planted the initial seed which eventually resulted in her taking up some vocal training sessions with a PhD student at the School of Music at UCT and later with a voice trainer at Pinelands High School. These singing lessons shaped the idea of recording a CD, which was recorded in August last year at the UCT School of Music. The CD would probably not have materialised if Julie had not been able to take a month’s unpaid leave in June 2017. The fact that it came together in the end was the result of sheer determination and perseverance as she had several challenges thrown at her at the time both on the home and work front as well as health challenges.

CD PROCEEDS TO CHARITY

To date the CD, with songs including A whole New World, My Heart Will Go On (The Titanic), I dreamed a Dream (Les Miserables), On My Own (Les Miserable), Nella Fantasia, You Raise Me Up, Memory (Cats), Pie Jesu, Ave Maria and The Prayer was gifted to a few family and friends for Christmas. After some months of contemplation, Julie obtained approval from the Composers Authors and Publishers Association (CAPASSO) to sell the CD with fifty percent of the proceeds being directed to Metro Kids which is a non-profit organisation whose goal is to help children create a better future. This programme has a huge impact in Cape Town and in Uganda where children are taught Christian based life and value lessons in schools and at after-school programmes. In total 7 000 children benefit from the programme weekly in Cape Town and 10 000 in Uganda. Metro Kids also operates a child

SINGING AS A CREATIVE OUTLET

Julie has been employed as a Contracts Manager (legal) in the Research Contracts & Innovation office at the University of Cape Town since 2003 after completing her articles and gaining five years’ experience in a Somerset West law firm. She has a legal degree from UCT, as well as a Masters in Environmental law. In her position she deals with stakeholders across the university and many different external stakeholders in reviewing, negotiating and drafting research funding and related agreements. The contract volume has grown substantially over the years with 2 549 contracts being processed by the Contracts Managers for the twelve month period up to 31 May 2018. Due to the huge volume of contracts, funding deadlines and that the services extend to the entire university, the job is fairly high pressured.

Consequently Julie finds that singing provides a therapeutic creative outlet.

A FAMILY WITH A LOVE FOR THE OUTDOORS

Julie's children Kate and Patrick are currently both at Westerford High School, and the Pinelands-Westerford lift-club has been a saving grace in juggling all the balls as a working mother. Husband Dave is an electrical contractor who works in the fast paced construction industry. The outdoors has always been the family’s passion, providing much needed rejuvenation from the business of everyday life and they feel blessed to live in a city which provides so much variety. Julie has completed 16 Cape Town Cycle tours having ridden her first cycle tour as a student. Her son Patrick has now followed suit by riding his first Cape Town Cycle Tour this year. As a family they have done some amazing hiking trails including the Abel Tasman hiking trail in New Zealand, thereby instilling a love of the outdoors in their children. Julie feels that learning to strike the right balance between work and recreation is an essential life lesson which determines one’s quality of life. 

According to a 2017 Sanlam Glacier report, in the case of a couple aged 65 today, there is a 50% chance that one of them will reach age 94, and a 25% chance that one of them will live to age 100. Ideally retirement saving should start at age 23 with a minimum of 15% of income. Only 8% of South Africans are able to retire with sufficient savings to provide an income at a replacement ratio of 75%.

Beating inflation

To protect one’s retirement income against inflation, retirees are encouraged to keep a healthy portion of their investments in equities. While many expenses do reduce after retirement, there are other costs that increase significantly such as the onset of illness requiring specialist care. Frail care, assisted living and private nursing, are incredibly expensive and retirees living in retirement villages are susceptible to fee and levy increases, as well as energy cost hikes which are endemic in this country.

Escalating healthcare costs

Many retirees are forced to reconsider their medical aid membership in an effort to cut costs. Discovery Health data shows that since 2008, total claims costs have increased by 11.4% a year, which is about 5% above CPI, and that half the medical costs you incur in your lifetime arise in the last year of your life. According to Discovery Health, ageing and increased levels of chronic disease are the main drivers of medical inflation.

Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease

In South Africa it is believed that approximately 6% of the population suffers from some form of Dementia. Multiple research studies have proven that delaying retirement also delays the onset of Dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease. A 2013 research report by the French government found that for each additional year of work, the risk of getting Dementia is reduced by 3.2%. The report found that working tends to keep people physically active, socially connected and mentally challenged – activities known to prevent mental decline.

Being a victim of fraud

In 2015, the South African Reserve Bank investigated 41 illegal deposit-taking schemes, with over 5 000 advance-fee scams having been reported over the past five years. The risk of losing money to scams, Ponzi schemes and investment fraud is a very real fear for many retirees.

Losing a spouse or partner

The fear of losing one’s life partner in retirement and the thought of battling grief and loneliness is a major stressor for retirees. Because women generally live longer than men, there is a very real chance that women will find themselves living alone for a period in their retirement, and this needs to be accounted for in one’s retirement plan.

Being bored

A 2012 study by the University of California, Berkeley, found that male retirees experience high levels of satisfaction directly after retirement, but that this satisfaction falls sharply within a few years of retirement. A 2013 study from the Institute of Economic Affairs shows that retirement increases the probability of suffering from clinical depression by about 40%. Remaining relevant, productive and engaged during retirement is essential to combating post-retirement depression.

Selling the family home

The thought of selling the family home and moving to a smaller retirement home leaves many retirees paralysed with fear to the point that they put off the move which, in turn, only serves to make it emotionally more difficult. Because of the high crime rates, retirement villages that offer 24-hour security are incredibly popular although, naturally, security comes at a price.

Financial burden on adult children

With 92% of retirees being under-funded for retirement, more pensioners are relying on their adult children for financial support. Many working South Africans are supporting their children and their aged parents at the same time. The associated emotions of guilt, frustration and resentment can put strain on family relationships as adult children struggle to educate their teenage children and care for their aging parents at the same time. In the process adult children end up delaying their own retirement funding, which in turn perpetuates the cycle of dependency. Retirement is not all dining, golf and sunset walks. Are you financially and emotionally prepared to embrace your next chapter retirement?

Why Antarctica? For Mark, it was the last piece in a puzzle having read about Scott’s expedition to the South Pole as a child. For me, I have always been attracted to water, mountains, snow and glaciers. After months of dreaming, planning and preparing, our friends Pren and Arthur Roberts joined us as we boarded the Ocean Diamond in the small port of Ushuaia. We were royally welcomed by the staff of the Quark expedition. The Drake Passage. Would it be like a Drake Lake or a Drake Shake? After a good night’s sleep, my vestibular system made it clear that I could no longer negotiate the passages like a sober person. Food no longer had any attraction and I wasn't sure if I was feeling more sick from the continuous motion or from the anti-nausea tablets. I didn't even get up at 2am to celebrate crossing the Antarctic circle. Our first landfall - Stonington Island in Marguerite Bay. On the way here we passed numerous icebergs, learnt to distinguish black browed albatrosses, from southern royal albatrosses; and looked out for petrels, skuas and terns. We were shuttled by Zodiac from ship to shore, but first did a trip around the bay, where some Minke whales put in a flash appearance. We tried to distinguish between Weddel seals, with their big round eyes, and crab eater seals, who actually eat krill and not crabs. Trying to master my camera wrapped in a plastic cover, with gloved hands was a mission, and so I accepted that I should just sit back, relax, enjoy the scenery and commit this unique experience to memory. Chrystal Bay was our next mooring and we were in the first zodiac to leave the boat. It is difficult to describe how truly beautiful Antarctica is. We were surrounded by a landscape that is every hue of white, black

Tip of the iceberg and blue and totally devoid of any other colour. Snow covered mountains loomed up out of jet black water. Icebergs with weird shapes, striations, icicles and bobbles shone with an aquamarine or bright blue close to the edge of the water. Each iceberg is unique in size and shape. The wind was lifting sheets of fresh powdery snow off the icebergs. We watched a Weddell seal launch itself up out of the water and onto an ice flow. On our journey back to the ship we encountered a snow blizzard - and were very happy to arrive back on board and sip on hot chocolate. A healing experience. Being in such a uniquely different place where there is no noise, no pollution, only the people from our ship, and surrounded by the ever changing landscape and nature, is a healing experience for the mind. The biggest question of the day is: “Will I get the perfect photograph?” Landfall at Paradise Bay on the Antarctic continent was the 7th continent for many of the travellers to set foot on and a rare privilege for me. Paradise Bay is very sheltered and surrounded by tall mountains covered in snow. The glaciers between the mountains creak and crack as pieces of ice calve off. Kayaking in the Graham Passage was an experience for Mark and me that will stand out in our memories as one of the best days of our respective lives. The weather was perfect and we even had some rays of sunshine to brighten the snow covered

mountains and icebergs and put a shard of pink in the sky. Mark squealed with excitement when he spotted a leopard seal behind us. Our guide gathered the kayaks together and slapped the water with oars to frighten the inquisitive meat eater away! The ultimate highlight for us, was paddling through the brash ice, which crackles and pops symphonically as the oxygen bubbles explode out of the melting ice. We were joined by rafts of Gentoo penguins and a few Chinstrap penguins who are just too gorgeous when their round bodies pop out of the water in wave like patterns. Deception Island was our last anchorage. It is a volcanic island and we dropped anchor in the lake that was formed by the caldera. It was a misty miserable day with the wind gusting between 35 and 40 knots. Not the most enticing weather to go out for a walk, but Mark and I managed a short walk (struggle) on the pitch black beach that was dotted with fur seals and the odd penguin. We were happy to catch the zodiac back to the ship for a hot delicious breakfast. We set sail for the Drake Passage just before lunch, as they were expecting some bad weather along the way. I realised that I was in for another Drake Shake and reached for the Stugeron and Meclizine. No amount of sea sickness across the Drake Passage can put a damper on this experience. Thanks to Mark, Unique Destinations (our local travel agent) and Quark Expeditions, this was the trip of a lifetime. 

Franschhoek Motor Museum

The magnificent FMM (Franschhoek Motor Museum) situated on the beautiful L'Ormarins estate is really worth a visit. This collection of more than eighty automobiles, motorcycles and penny farthing bicycles is housed in four humidity controlled halls - in sparkling condition - and often in working condition too - as was evident on Father's day when some of the vehicles were driven along the

driveways outside the display halls. There is a vast variety of makes of car (and carriages and penny farthings) spanning a hundred years of motoring history. You will recognise names such as BMW, Mercedes Benz, Bugatti, Ferrari, Alpha Romeo, Aston Martin and Rolls Royce. Look out for the original GPS system! Ingredients

1 whole 1½ - 2kg spatchcock chicken fresh coriander and parsley for garnish

Spicy Marinade

3 cloves garlic 1-2 chillies zest of 2 lemons 2cm piece ginger- peeled 1-2 T fennel seeds 1 heaped T brown sugar fresh thyme olive oil juice of 1 lemon salt and pepper (don’t be shy here) 1. Prepare hot coals in the kettle braai. 2. Give the spatchcock chicken a good massage with some olive oil and lemon juice, inside and out. 3. In a pestle and mortar add all the marinade ingredients, except the olive oil and the lemon juice. Grind until everything is fine enough and rub all over the chicken - inside and out. 4. Place the chicken on the grill rack in the braai with a drip tray underneath. 5. Cook the chicken for one hour constantly basting with olive oil and lemon juice to get a crispy skin. 6. Cook for another half hour if the chicken is not perfectly cooked (internal temperature should reach 70 oC). 7. Serve with boiled new potatoes, a salad, potato bake…really anything you fancy, because all attention will be on this perfectly braaied chicken!

Tip: Use this recipe for an oven roasted chicken. Cook for 45 minutes at 200 oC. Baste with dripping juices. Then reduce temperature to 170 oC until done. www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za

Spicy chicken on the braai Spatchcock Chicken

Believe it or not, spring is upon us and so is Braai Season. I sincerely hope it rains quite a bit more, even if I have to sacrifice a braai lamb chop or a chicken thigh. In my family, it is custom to braai enough meat on Saturday nights, so that we have enough left for Sunday lunch. I quite like the odd piece of chicken amongst the ribs and chops, but it is essential that the chicken is properly cooked and never raw. A clever way to cook the chicken all the way through is to spatchcock the chicken. In other words, flatten it. So the perfect braaied chicken for me should be crispy and golden brown on the outside and the white meat must be juicy and tender and well-cooked. Braaied Chicken-Spicy Spatchcock chicken

When roasting chicken pieces, it is easier to get to that state of “perfection”, but with a whole bird it is just not possible to cook all the pieces of the chicken right through, unless of course you... spatchcock or butterfly the chicken first. Using this technique your chicken cooks evenly, faster and the marinade gets to all the areas of the chicken. How to butterfly a chicken? My husband likes the pope’s nose and so I use a method that prevents loss of this delicacy. I simply place my chicken on a wooden board, breast side up and with a sharp knife, cut down the middle of the chicken. Now turn the chicken over and flatten. Tie the legs together with some string and the bird is ready for the marinade.
