Roald Dahl's words were particularly apt for us this month as we enjoyed a number of school theatre productions. It is always refreshing to watch the excitement and energy of children's productions, no doubt at the expense of the director's nerves.

A large raptor that is being seen quite regularly around Clyde Pinelands soccer fields. The name derives from its call which is Jackal like. Male and female are alike, with the male being smaller than the female. Very distinct in flight with black and white wings and head and the chest and tail are a very distinct rufous colour. Their usual habitat is mountainous where most of their food is found. They eat mainly mammals, up to the size of a hare but also eat rodents, insects and even other birds. They nest on cliff ledges but occasionally in trees as well. They are monogamous.

Irish dramatist, Seán O'Casey, borrowed and embellished a line from Shakespeare which many of us will relate to, “All the world's a stage and most of us are desperately unrehearsed”. Perhaps this is one of the reasons we enjoy watching live theatre, where difficult or fantastical situations are played out before our eyes with confidence and assured aplomb. The one-liners come thick and fast - exactly what we would have wanted to say if only we had the luxury of a finely crafted script to follow in our real life exchanges. Theatre also gives us a taste of how life could or should be in an imaginary world where anything is possible and not limited by the reality of our everyday lives. We all carry some emotional baggage every day – our hang-ups, tiredness or tragedies, and an escape to the theatre allows us to set them down and forget about them for a while, or perhaps lighten the load by seeing real characters on the stage grappling with similar situations. There is something electric about a theatre show, which you don't get from watching a cinema, TV or computer screen. There is an energy and a buzz of expectancy waiting for the curtain to go up, a feeling of being part of an audience and a closeness to real actors on the stage. As you watch, you are involved and sharing the risk of the live event. It feels like life on the edge, because like life, there is no second take. Stage theatre involves all the senses and the inevitable imperfections and mishaps make it all the more authentic. Without the high fidelity surround sound and special effects of the movies you have to work harder to engage. The audience has a part to play – their fidgeting, laughs and applause are the energy that fuels the actors. You don't just watch, you participate. I hope you enjoy the edition!

DEAN CARSTENS REPRESENTS SOUTH AFRICA IN CHINA In August this year 10 year old Dean Carstens of Pinehurst Primary School joined a team of six participants invited to represent South Africa as an Oppi sailor on an International Sport Exchange Program to Qingdao, China. This is a cultural sport event sponsored by the Western Cape Government, and partnered by South African Sailing Western Cape.

This was Dean's first International flight which took him from Cape Town through Johannesburg to Hong Kong and finally landed at Qingdao Liuting International Airport. Dean said he enjoyed the flight especially the inflight entertainment - but found it extremely hot and humid in China. Thank goodness for the air conditioned hotels and buses! He feels that most of the food they were offered was not typically Chinese - probably catering for international visitors. Dean also found it easier to make friends with sailors from Germany and Australia - but the language barrier made it harder to connect with the local sailors. Dean however was able to renew a friendship with a junior sailor who had visited South Africa in April this year when the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and the South African Sailing Western Cape hosted a delegation of junior sailors from Qingdao.

COMPETING IN TEN REGATTAS

Dean enjoyed competing in the Qingdao regattas - there were ten in all. He was the first South African to cross the finish line in the Silver fleet. Commenting on the sailing conditions Dean says there was a light wind the first day ..... and giant jellyfish! He was fourth overall for the boys in the silver fleet, and 7th overall in the junior boys section. He also commented on the challenge of having to sail with equipment that is not your own. The team had a chance to visit the Governor's House and a few museums - one of which was an African Museum (not really what Dean expected) - but he was interested in the virtual reality of the exhibits that made them appear to be moving. The team enjoyed trading with their fellow participants on the last day. An appealing piece of apparel Dean describes is a hat with a zip for sunglasses and a concealed hoodie that folds out when needed.

SAILING IS IN THE FAMILY.

Dean comes from a family of sailors. They like to practice at Milnerton and at Zeekoeivlei over weekends. Dean would love to be able to compete at the World Optimist Championships. The event was in Cyprus this year and next year it will be in the Seychelles. So it seems that Dean is keen to travel - but he realises that he would have to pay for the trip this time and is thinking of ideas to earn the money to cover the costs. "Washing cars would not be an option - I would have to wash a LOT of cars to raise enough!" he laughs. ď&#x20AC;ź

CAPE TOWN RENTAL MARKET IN THE DOLDRUMS

After nearly seven years By Robyn Meyer of consistent growth in Seeff Pinelands the Western Cape rental Rental Division market, where rentals have nearly doubled, it has finally buckled under the pressure of the rising costs of living, an overall economic decline as well as the political instability says Robyn Meyer. Since April the markets have taken a dramatic turn with an abundance of stock available and rentals in some categories dropping by up to 25%. A typical example is a two bedroom apartment in a popular complex where we achieved R12 500 last year, is now on the market at R10 000. We do not see much relief until after the elections. Landlords need to have realistic rental expectations and reward tenants in good standing with nominal increases. It is far more costly to have a property stand vacant for several months. Even a one month vacancy means a loss of nearly 10%. Another fallout of the market decline has been the instances of early lease cancellations as per the Consumer Protection Act where tenants can no longer afford rentals and find cheaper accommodation. There are still enquiries, but the quality of tenants has deteriorated to such an extent that at least 50% of enquiries do not qualify, most of them with impaired credit records. The downturn has also given rise to scams where Landlords and Tenants have lost large deposits to bogus agents. Please ensure that before paying any money you check the credibility of the agent. Ask for proof of their Fidelity Fund Certificate or check with the Estate Agency Affairs Board that they are legal.

Challenges in the property market have resulted in a flat outlook for the rest of the year and probably until after next year’s election. The Western Cape has experienced exceptional growth in the past 5 years so there has to be some correction. This is by no means the worst market that I have experienced in my 35 years and nowhere near the lows of the global financial crisis of 2008, interest rates of 25.5% in 1998 and international economic sanctions in 1986. So what can we as sellers do right now? Firstly, we need to consider our reasons for selling. Do not use the services of more than one agent. You need a dedicated agent who understands and is active in your market and has a pool of buyers that they have been working with. Review the sources used to value your home. In a changing market, prices achieved last month are no longer relevant. Ask for proof of what has recently sold and what they have sold. Do not use the services of low cost agencies who have no knowledge of market conditions in your area and simply trade on promises of a high selling price and a low commission structure. THE GRAMOPHONE BY THEATRECRAFT DRAMA The Gramophone was presented by Pinehurst's Theatrecraft drama pupils aged 7-10 as a lively tale, written by Paula Pursch, about children who fall inside a computer whilst looking for music apps, when Gran's gramophone fails. The happy cast had a great deal of fun linking "how it was done in times gone past" and the new technology of today. One had to feel for the floppy and stiffy drives relegated to the dust heap! Appropriate costumes for the gramophone inner workings, the music loving Gran and the wide array of modern apps including Adobe Reader and a comical DropBox kept the audience smiling along with the foot tapping music.

Every second year, Pinelands North Primary School puts on a school play which involves every child in the school, and most of the staff perform on the stage too! This is a week that the children remember, long after they have graduated from university. The natural talent of dancers, judokas, artists and actors is so evident! This year’s show, A Family Album, presented a gentle comedy made up of eight short vignettes, describing the developments in the life of a young family.

The action starts just before the arrival of the first baby and carries on through to the point at which the eldest daughter sets off into the big, wide world. Siblings arrive, milestones and phases of family life come and go, and these are captured in ‘a family album’. The family's moments of love, laughter and life, are interspersed with roof raising dance numbers, and multi-media art, resulting in an outstandingly good show for the whole PNPS family!

URBAN GREENING BY THE SCOUTS Recently 1st Pinelands Scout Group was faced with a growing challenge of litter on the side of their hall in an unused alley way. Things were becoming increasingly problematic as it was evident that vagrants were using it as storage and even as a toileting area. Credit to the City Council Solid Waste Department after a phone-call to them describing the situation and their prompt response in cleaning up the area. As a group they considered how to manage this area with various options being considered. In the end it was decided that the avenue of urban rejuvenation should be followed and so the idea of a garden being planted in that space was set in motion. It has been amazing to see that the area has not since been misused or polluted again and at the same time it is aesthetically pleasing. The recent Barn Dance Fundraiser held at Oude Molen Academy raised nearly R32,000 towards the building of Phase 2 of the Grace Primary School premises. There were over 250 people present ranging from tiny tots to the golden oldies from across Cape Town. There was a ballet demo, barn dances, line dancing, and a street dancing school flash mob with approximately 150 on the dance floor! Burgers or curry were available for supper. The barn dance has become a biannual fundraising and community-building event for the school, presenting the families with a rare opportunity for joyful and energetic multi-generational bonding. This role is not often thought or spoken about, but I regard it as central to the purpose and power of schooling. In this short piece I hope to offer a few thoughts on why the community dimension is so important and describe some of the ways in which schools instil hope in our young and in our society.

For many young people today, school is the safest, the most predictable and the most significant experience of community and community involvement. Fewer and fewer families are practising members of faith communities, extended families are often distributed across the globe and rarely meet, neighbourhoods are characterised by high walls and electric fences, often with minimal engagement between neighbours. Outside the family, 10:59 AM school plays a community role that is more important than was the case 20, 30 or 50 years ago. It is within such communities that so many valuable values, principles and behaviours are learnt and practiced. Given the world’s brokenness (consider corruption, xenophobia, natural disasters, wars, conflict in many areas of the world, our economy…) building, nurturing and promoting hope become important priorities for any school.

BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR TEAM AMABELE BELLES HEAD FOR SPAIN Text: Lenora Hammond The amaBele Belles, a Dragon Boat Team for Breast Cancer survivors, was founded by Pam Newby, a veteran dragon boater, in 2006. The Belles have participated in a variety of regattas in the East as well as Canada. This year, the decision was made to take part in a boot camp instead! The emphasis will be on fitness, fun and friendship. Following the training camp, the Belles will demonstrate their racing prowess by participating in an intercontinental regatta. This will be the first time an African team has taken part and the Belles will be racing against teams from Europe and North America. In 1985, Dr. Don McKenzie arranged for a group of 20 mastectomy patients to participate in a trial on a dragon boat in Canada, measuring the effect of vigorous upper body exercise on post-mastectomy patients. The trial was so successful that the ladies involved did not want to stop

paddling. This was the birth of the world’s first Pink Dragon Boating Team. Since then, pink teams are found all over the globe. The benefits of exercise for women who have experienced breast cancer are immense. The Belles also have the privilege of paddling year round in our beautiful harbour in Cape Town. The boot camp takes place in beautiful

Torrevieja, a city in Spain's south-eastern Alicante province, on the Costa Blanca. It is known for its Mediterranean climate and coastline. The Belles are looking forward to the opportunity of representing South Africa at the intercontinental regatta as well as the training camp, although the term “boot camp” has got some a little nervous. 

Money lessons at every age By Sue Torr

Director Crue Invest Experts say that children as young as three years old can grasp financial concepts like saving and spending, and that their money habits are formed by age 7. Parents talking openly and honestly with children about money removes the mystery and makes money management part of everyday life. Here are some age-related lessons to impart with our children: Age 3 – 5: Teach your child to delay gratification The ability to delay gratification is used as a predictor as to how successful a person will be later in life. It is never too early to begin talking to children about waiting for something they really want. The Christmas advent calendar provides an excellent opportunity to teach the lesson of delayed gratification. Alternatively, allow your child to set a savings goal. Tracking savings on a calendar will reinforce the concepts of time and money – the two most important factors when it comes to investing. The best way to teach young children is to demonstrate it yourself. Share your goals and successes. Age 6 – 10: Teach your child to make financial decisions The object of this lesson is to help children to understand that money is finite and the choices are infinite. They can have anything, but they can’t have everything. Every purchase made today is a withdrawal against something they may desire in the future. Begin the process by narrowing down their options. For instance, allow them to choose between three different types of sweets as opposed to the whole overwhelming choice the shop has to offer. Over and above doing the maths, it also teaches the child what it feels like to make decisions – and live with the consequences. Avoid bailing your child out when they don’t have enough money to purchase something they want. Feeling deprived of something, will stimulate a desire to save. Age 11 – 13: Teach your child the power of compound interest Teaching children the magic of compound interest can be fun and memorable, and requires shifting the child’s focus from short-term to long-term goals. With a fuller appreciation for time, children at this age should be able to set longer-term goals for themselves. Using a R1 coin and

10c pieces is a fun way to show children how money can grow. Another effective method is to use a desk calendar and jelly beans to demonstrate that compound interest is interest that grows on itself, using one colour for the ‘principal’ money and another colour for the interest. You can exaggerate the interest - it is the principle that you want them to grasp, not the exact maths. Their growing pile of jelly beans should lead to more questions and more opportunities to discuss how interest works. An important lesson that should not be lost in the process is how compound interest can work against you. Age 14 – 18: Teach your child to manage money At this age, most teenagers are earning enough pocket money to warrant a bank account. Online banking is the perfect way to allow teenagers to track and manage their spending, reinforcing the first principle of financial management: you can’t manage what you can’t measure. There are boundless opportunities during these teenage years to teach money management on a smaller scale. Grocery shopping or going out for a family dinner provide perfect opportunities to discuss the household budget, making choices and sacrifices, the reasons for keeping till slips and how to track expenditure. As parents, we should go through our bank statements with our teenage children to develop an appreciation for the costs of living, while at the same time teaching them how to read a bank statement. Age 18+: Teach your child the value of an honest day’s work Until you have traded a day of your life for a pay cheque you will never fully appreciate the value of money. Whether in the form of a holiday waitering job, baby-sitting, tutoring, coaching or pet-sitting, the lessons to be learned from doing an honest day’s work are as invaluable as they are endless. Besides learning the need for punctuality, commitment and dependability, working gives one a fuller appreciation for money that is traded for one’s time – which in turn will hopefully encourage your child to start contemplating the benefits of investing and generating passive income. 

"The Premier Hockey League (PHL) is a South African Hockey Association (SAHA) initiative, with support from the Department of Sport and Recreation, and brings 120 of the country's best hockey players together in an elite tournament for both men and women. There are six men’s and six women’s teams. 17 players out of a squads 20 players are asked to play each the weekend. I was fortunate enough to play in all three weekends of PHL. The tournament is held in Johannesburg at the Randburg Astroturf and each team had some SA National players. I was playing alongside SA player’s Lisa Deetlefs, Kristen Paton and against Sulette Damons, Shelly Jones, Kara Botes, Tarryn Glasby and many others. All the matches were televised on Super Sport and many sponsors were involved, meaning all our costs were covered, a first for me.

MY TEAM - THE MADIKWE RANGERS

My team, the Madikwe Rangers had a tough

first weekend losing both games, although we dominated possession. The second weekend was an exciting one for the Rangers. We beat the Namaqualand Daisies 4-1 from being 1-0 down, but unfortunately lost to the St Lucia Lakers by 1-0. Our third match that weekend was against the Winelands Wings and it was important to win to progress to the semi-finals/finals the following week. The match ended in a draw, but we snuck a win on showdowns.

THE PLAYOFFS!

In our semi-final game we faced the 2017 PHL champions, the Orange River Rafters. It was a thrilling game as both teams displayed threatening counter attacks and shots on target, but the Rafters were winning 2-0 at half time. The score line increased our motivation and along with words of encouragement from coach, Bevan Bennett, we came back guns-blazing and scored 2 goals to equalize. The Rangers

again proved their worth in the shootouts, and won the game 3-1.

THE FINALS!

Next up came the finals, where we faced the 2016 winners, the Blyde River Bunters. They managed to sneak in a goal in the third chukka and block all our goal-scoring attacks throughout the game. The Bunters ended up winning the game 1-0 and we walked away with silver. Winning silver was an incredible moment and I feel really proud of the awesome hockey played by our team. I hope to one day play for the women’s national side and get the opportunity to play for an overseas club, but I do realise that it will take a lot of hard work and hours of practice to achieve this. Special thanks to my school coaches Ian Parsons, Jade Hearne, and Luke Thonissen and to my current coaches Brinsley Powell and Ryan Pillay, for their support and contributions to my development." 

TIMOTHY DE MONK

Chatting to 20 year old Timothy in his studio at home, it isn't immediately obvious that he only developed an interest in music when he was in grade 9, studying music from grade 10. Encouraged to play the guitar by a cousin, Timothy found that he couldn't put the instrument down. In 2015 he recorded his first EP (demo CD) Hazy Days and now, one year out of matric he is enjoying the successes of his songs Every Day which was on 5FM top ten for 18 weeks; I Never Want to See Her, which was number one on 5FM for 8 weeks; and his most recent release No Stress Moment, which Timothy believes will be his very best so far! Other recent releases include Start a Fire and On Our Own.

His parents are fully supportive of his chosen career.

Timothy loves his music and loves the stage. His enthusiasm for music touches every facet of his life and he is constantly creating sounds and songs that become "earworms" - catchy tunes that stick with you all day. Apart from some voice training, Timothy is self taught as far as the technology side of the industry is concerned. He released his first four singles, through the David Gresham Entertainment Group, but now enjoys the freedom of being an independent artist with his own music label - TDM Music. He makes it look so easy as he demonstrates the making of a backing track that he can play at a gig. Using a music

My mother had a lifelong dream to travel to the Holy Land - Jordan, Egypt, Israel and Palestine. This year she and I finally crossed it off the bucket list. The trip was a ten day express through four countries, with visits to holy sites relevant to three world religions, namely; Islam, Judaism and Christianity. The flight from Cape Town was blessed by the singing and clapping of a gospel choir group from Khayelitsha on their way to perform in Europe, a wonderful start to a pilgrimage. We flew into Amman, the capital city of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and joined a tour group from India. Three notable sites in Jordan that we visited were Mount Nebo, the River Jordan and the Dead Sea. Mt Nebo is the site where Moses viewed the Holy Land before his death. There is currently a church built here which has 6th century mosaics and the neighbouring town of Madaba has Byzantine-era artefacts. The River Jordan, which runs between Jordan and Israel is where John the Baptist would baptise his followers. It remains a popular site for tourists to be baptised. The Dead Sea, known for its high salt and mineral content, is surrounded by black mud instead of typical beach sand. Next was a bus trip into Israel, through extensive security checks at the border. Once in Israel the scenery changed completely, from sand to acres of farming and vegetation – it is understandable why it is called the Land of Milk and Honey.

HOLY LAND EXPERIENCE We stayed in the Palestinian town of Bethlehem, well-known as the birth place of Christ. There are numerous religiously significant spots in and around Palestine including Nazareth, the childhood town of Jesus and the impressive, three-storey Basilica of the Annunciation. We visited the towns surrounding the sea of Galilee where Jesus performed many miracles. A shuttle carries pilgrims to the top of Mount Tabor which has a beautiful Church of the Transfiguration. We enjoyed a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus is said to have walked on water. This was complemented by lunch at St Peter’s restaurant, a reference to the fisherman who became Jesus’ disciple. New Jerusalem’s modern apartments and shops are reminiscent of New York and Paris, whereas the Old Jerusalem has an ancient fortress and limestone buildings. We visited the Western Wall, a significant site in Judaism. Entrance to this area has many security checks, men and women must cover their heads and no photography is permitted in the plaza. Access to the Al-Aqsa mosque, a sacred site in Islam, was restricted to Muslim worshippers. The Mount of Olives is a good vantage point to see the Old City of Jerusalem. The Way of the Cross or Via Dolorosa is the path that Jesus walked to his crucifixion which in present days zig-zags through a busy bazaar in Old Jerusalem. It

The queue to enter was enormous and we stood for three hours amongst believers from every corner of the world who would sing religious hymns in their respective languages to entertain as we waited. Graffiti artist Banksy’s art is visible on the wall dividing areas of the West Bank, a sobering reminder of the ongoing conflict in the area which has escalated in recent times. The final country to visit was Egypt, a five-hundred-kilometre journey from Israel to Egypt via the Sinai desert made for an epic road trip on the tour bus. Taba, bordering the Red Sea was the ideal pit stop. I went swimming in the Red Sea and was amazed by the teeming marine life and coral reefs perfect for snorkelling. We journeyed onward to Cairo via St Catharine’s monastery, the site of God’s appearance to Moses as a burning bush. It is located at the base of Mount Sinai, where the Ten Commandments were given to Moses. It is the world’s oldest functioning monastery a breath-taking building in an otherwise barren desert. Cairo is a bustling city with markets and the famous pyramids of Giza right inside the city. The Egyptian Museum is a treasure-trove of Egyptian art and history. It was a once in a lifetime pilgrimage, not for the faint-hearted. 

Indonesian rice dish Recipe from Pharma Dynamics, Let’s Talk Serves 4 – 6 Peanut paste 30 ml (2 tbsp) finely grated fresh ginger 2 small cloves of garlic, crushed 20 ml (4 tsp) paprika 20 ml (4 tsp) ground cumin 20 ml (4 tsp) ground coriander 1-2 small red chillies, seeded and finely chopped 200 g unsalted peanuts, crushed & chopped 5 ml (1 tsp) finely grated lime or lemon rind 30 ml (2 tbsp) lime or lemon juice 90 ml (6 tbsp) olive or avocado oil Rice 15-20 ml (3-4 tsp) olive or avocado oil 8 spring onions, thinly sliced 2 cups uncooked brown basmati rice 2,5 ml (½ tsp) salt 1,2 litres water 50 g unsalted peanuts, coarsely chopped 6-8 eggs, fried in very little oil freshly ground black pepper lime or lemon juice to taste lime or lemon wedges for serving 1. Peanut paste: Mix all the ingredients together to form a chunky paste. 2. Rice: Heat 15 ml (1 tbsp) of the oil in a wide, deep saucepan over a medium heat. Fry 125 ml (½ cup) of the paste for a few minutes or until just aromatic. 3. Add half of the spring onions and sauté for a few minutes. Add rice and remaining oil and fry until well coated in the peanut paste. 4. Add salt and water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover with a lid and simmer gently for 30-35 minutes or until the rice is just cooked, but not too soft. 5. Meanwhile, toast the 50 g chopped peanuts in a dry frying pan until golden brown. Fry the eggs according to your preference. 6. Season the rice to taste with pepper and lime or lemon juice. 7. Serve rice topped with fried eggs, toasted peanuts, the remaining peanut paste and lime wedges. Garnish with spring onions.

The other benefit is discovering new flavours and combinations, like this Indonesian-inspired rice dish. The peanut paste is so delicious you will soon find many reasons to make it. We can enjoy peanuts as a snack, in the shell, out of the shell, roasted, salted or mixed with Tips 1. To crush peanuts, press down on them with the blade of a large knife, then chop coarsely. 2. If preferred, the peanut paste can be prepared in a pestle and mortar. It will have a slightly finer texture.

Topped with a fried egg and more of this chunky paste – you are in for a flavour explosion. If you do have some peanut paste leftover or you were so excited (like me) that you made double, never fear… it is wonderful on any veggie dish. Try it over roasted veg, baked sweet potatoes and even steamed green veggies. It is also yummy on grilled fish or roasted chicken. Just keep it in the fridge until needed.

3. If unsalted peanuts are not available, use salted peanuts. Take care when seasoning, and rather use less or no salt. 4. Coriander leaves will be delicious to garnish this dish.
