A LITTLE LEARNING IS A DANGEROUS THING

Education has changed a great deal in the last century, and especially in the past 30 years or so. No longer are children rigidly and uniformly, simply filled with facts, formulas and rules. They are now encouraged to be free thinkers and to follow their own path to knowledge and understanding, at their own pace and even to be selective about what and how they want to study. This sounds like a progressive and very modern approach, but the idea has been around for a long, long time. 24 Centuries ago, the ancient Greek philosopher Plato wrote "Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each." This was a time when education was imparted, not by lecturing to the student, but rather through discussion and debate about a topic so that the student arrived at a sound understanding through vigorous exploration and questioning of various opposing ideas and opinions. The process also helped to form a deep and well-considered opinion in the mind of the student - surely a good thing, but who has time these days to learn like that we ask? There is so much more we have to know today. Teachers have too many learners under their care to lavish such time and attention on each of them and the learners - they have too many things going on to spend much time looking too deeply into any one thing. The internet is a wonderful resource for fast access to information. It can provide an instant answer to just about any question or give us a ready-made opinion on any subject - and that is the curse - we are tempted to believe it can make us instant experts. In our adopted <tap><scroll><swipe><swipe> online mode it is so tempting to take the shortcut to someone else's answer and miss out on the journey to our own deeper understanding. You only have to look at any YouTube comments section or discussion forum to see the self-proclaimed instant experts, who immediately flame any opinion opposed to their own with harsh vitriol and no consideration. Another ancient Greek thinker, Aristotle, said "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." If only we would follow that maxim, it would make more educated thinkers of all of us, whatever side of the Twitter war we were on and we might just learn a lot more from each other.

Namaqua Dove Since moving to Pinewood Village four years ago I have kept a list of birds seen in the Village, or flying over. I was very excited to log my 50th bird recently, and especially so as it is a rarity in the Pinelands area. The male Namaqua dove has a conspicuous black face, throat and breast, with a long tail - the only dove to have one. It has a yellow to yellow-orange bill. The female lacks the black on the body and the colour on the bill. They are most commonly found in semiarid and arid acacia savannas, and dry shrub lands. Like most doves they build a frail platform nest of twigs usually low down in an Acacia bush. They eat mostly seeds. Text by John McFarlane, Pinewood Village resident. ENTERTAINING MUSICIANS AT CANNONS MUSIC FESTIVAL

RCL OF OUDE MOLEN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 2019 The representative council of learners is an official body, representing all students. They are elected by fellow students in their grade, based on their leadership abilities and trustworthiness. On a day to day basis, the RCL helps with organising events and functions. All public schools are required to have an RCL as it is a governance structure that falls under the SA Schools Act. The chairperson and deputy chairperson also represent the learners on the school governing body; this too provides a voice for the learners of the school.

Grade 2 "Tuesday 5th February saw the annual PNPS School in Action Day. This is a unique opportunity for parents and prospective parents to experience the inner workings of the school. Parents can also take advantage of School in Action Day to join in mini tours of the school’s facilities. School in Action Day offers a wonderful opportunity to parents and caregivers to be part of their children’s everyday life at school. I was able to learn new Afrikaans vocabulary in Grade 3, plot the country’s nine provinces on a map in Grade 5, and learn how to calculate area in Grade 6. Seeing our children’s teachers in action is a reminder that we are extremely fortunate to be part of a school that “does things differently”. The classrooms are not eerily silent, but bustling hives of activity, with children sharing their stories while being active participants in their learning. It was wonderful to see parents taking part in the little reading groups sitting outside, or walking round the field with their children as they “experienced” their maths class. When the bell rang for break, parents were treated to a scrumptious tea in the hall. School in Action Day really is a treat and I’ll be back to join in the fun next year!" 90 year old Jessie Cumsty from Pinelands Place has been the driver of a project to knit beanies for winter for those in need. At first the wool was purchased and the knitting ladies were supplied with a pattern. When word got out about the project, donations of wool starting arriving. Although this is not a formal knitting group Jessie has received knitted beanies from about 14 ladies. More than 200 beanies have been knitted! These will be donated along with care packs to CPOA at Lotus River over the Easter Weekend. Congratulations ladies!

#AdoptATree IN PINELANDS On Saturday 6th April the Renew the Elsieskraal River group plans to plant 100 indigenous trees supplied by the Department of Parks and Recreation, on the banks of the Elsieskraal River. You are invited to #AdoptATree. Come and join in on Saturday 6th, between 10 am to 1pm, where a mini-festival will make tree planting fun for the whole family. Trees are amazing: they reduce carbon, bind the soil, lower city temperatures, add biodiversity and provide psychological benefits for humans. The Renew the Elsieskraal River group is working closely with the local Councillor, Parks and Recreation, Water and Sanitation and Environment Management to reduce the ill effects of the Elsieskraal river flowing in a concrete canal. Indigenous aquatic vegetation has been allowed to grow in the canal, in a well managed way, to encourage biodiversity to return to the river, and the trees planted on the banks will in due course provide a healthy natural environment next to the river. An invitation is extended to individuals, families, organisations and businesses to #AdoptATree and join us on the day to plant it.

The Children's Hospital Trust was established in 1994 to fundraise for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and in 2011 expanded its reach to fundraise for paediatric healthcare in the Western Cape and beyond. Since 1994, The Trust has proudly assisted the Hospital to upgrade its buildings and equipment and to develop its professional staff. 100% of all donations goes directly to the Hospital and prioritised paediatric healthcare needs, and not a single cent is spent on administration costs. The Trust is a non-profit organisation that relies on the benevolence of donors to realise its aims

and objectives. Whilst it has raised funds to address many pressing needs, much has yet to be done. GRACE PRIMARY SCHOOL TURNS FIVE! Grace Primary School opened its doors on 15th January 2014 with only 15 children in a joint Grade 1 and 2 class, in facilities at the Congregational Church. Over the past five years the school has expanded and developed, now with almost 100 children in Grades 1-7. Pioneering a new school is a daunting task, with great risk, hard work and perseverance involved, but this is what is needed all over our country. One way or another, more schooling opportunities need to be offered to meet the increasing demand, but always with careful thought given to the actual purpose of the education offered. The founding parents of Grace Primary believed that the educational philosophy, method and content they had discovered in the writings of Charlotte Mason were pedagogical gems, as relevant here and now as they were in England in her day. The school strives to offer a rich and broad curriculum in a nurturing atmosphere in order to foster a love of learning for its

own sake. We are thankful for our incredible team of teaching staff and their dedication, hard work and care for children. The 'proof of the pudding’ is that our children enjoy coming to school – and this makes all the sacrifices worthwhile! We are truly grateful to God for all who are part of Grace Primary’s ongoing story and are looking forward to the next chapter in the story when we get to build the final phase of our premises in order to have the full range of classes and facilities available. THE JOY AND REWARD OF TEACHING Brendan Carroll Principal, Pinehurst Primary School

As periodically happens, the teaching profession has again made the local headlines. This time it was as a result of a ‘boiling over’ of interpersonal relationships. Social media has been abuzz with comments and opinions. Most of those which I’ve read have pointed to the decline in family and societal respect for rules and people in general. Teaching is consistently ranked among the most stressful professions. This is based upon the pressures put on teachers, heavy workload and lack of government support. Amazingly, even with all this, teachers continue to devote and dedicate their lives to our children.

WHY CHOOSE TO TEACH? IT CAN'T BE FOR THE MONEY

So why do we choose to teach or manage a school? This question was asked of me recently in the context of a conversation with a young university student who has just signed a contract for legal articles at a

large law firm. His starting salary as an articled clerk will be the same as the starting salary for a principal of a state school such as the one where I am currently the principal. So why be a teacher when a BSc, BComm or BA degree directed towards engineering, law or accounting, rather than the very same degrees being directed towards teaching Mathematics, Science, Accountancy, or English will be rewarded with a far greater salary as well as greater public respect?

TEACHERS DEVELOP A HEART CONNECTION WITH LEARNERS

Good teachers choose to teach because there is something inside them which compels them to do so. The undergraduate degree is just the vehicle of entry into the profession. It would seem as if some people live with the strange idea that teachers are those folks who didn’t really have any other option – ‘wannabees’ who didn’t quite make it. Teaching is so much more than knowing content and regurgitating it to a class. The most fundamental element of teaching is the ability to make heart connections. It is about caring, instructing, monitoring and imparting.

A person who enters into teaching has to be able to say that they are prepared to ‘give up’ in order to ‘give out’. A true teacher is a person with a heart for others – children in our case. and it is a pity that the teaching profession is not valued as other professions are. It is also amusing how often I encounter parents or other people with no educational qualifications or educational experience who feel that it is acceptable for them to instruct or advise teachers on how they should do their jobs. Teachers are of course humans and therefore not perfect. Certain teachers’ behaviour and work ethic have at times also unfortunately not helped to strengthen our public image and support. This however should not be used as a varnish with which to paint all teachers.

So in spite of the above, why do we teach? My real joy and reward as a teacher is seeing the children who I taught as confident adults living beyond themselves. My joy comes from being stopped in the local shopping centre to receive a hug and chat to people who I taught; sometimes even being introduced to their own children. It is such a privilege when the children you taught send their children to your school and entrust them as a second generation into your care. 

Traditionally, our intelligence was seen as portrayed by a single thing – IQ, and that it was the main predictor of life-long success. ESTATE PLANNING FOR MENTAL INCAPACITY

Director Crue Invest As improvements in medical science and technology allow us to live longer, incapacity is becoming a growing problem. Contrary to popular misconception, dementia is not a normal part of ageing, but rather a degenerative brain disease – with age being the single biggest risk factor for developing the illness. Simply put, the longer you live the more likely you are to get the disease. Current legislation is wholly inadequate when it comes to managing the financial affairs of those suffering from mental incapacity. However, proactive planning can be of benefit. Here’s how:

FINANCIAL PLANNING

As part of your financial planning journey, our advice is not to underestimate your longevity. When it comes to financial planning, start as early as you possibly can and plan for a life expectancy of age 100. Take into consideration that healthcare costs increase annually at a rate of inflation plus 4%, and that this growth assumption should be built into your financial plan. It is also important to know that women spend around 7% more on healthcare in retirement as a result of the fact that they live longer than men. These assumptions are the very least that should be built into your financial plan, bearing in mind that 24hour home care costs around R30 000 per month and a frail care facility costs around R25 000 per month.

ESTATE PLANNING

When structuring your estate, ensure that your beneficiary nominations are correct particularly in the case of retirement funds. In South Africa, retirement funds do not form part of your deceased estate which means that on your death the capital is transferred directly to your beneficiaries without attracting estate duty or executor’s fees. However, if you have not nominated beneficiaries, the proceeds will form part of your estate and executor’s fees may be charged. Another advantage of nominating your beneficiaries is that they do not have to wait for your estate to be wound up to

receive the capital. It is also important to bear in mind that a will which is drafted by a person not of sound mind is not valid, and it is therefore advisable to be proactive about drafting your will and keeping it updated while you are still of sound mind.

HEALTHCARE PLANNING

With escalating medical aid premiums and healthcare inflation constantly outstripping CPI, remaining on a comprehensive medical aid option as you get older might not be financially possible, albeit highly advisable. We also strongly recommend taking out gap cover insurance which funds the shortfall between what is paid by the medical aid and what is charged by service providers for in-hospital care. Funding the cost of 24-hour care in retirement can be insurmountable, and we therefore cannot stress enough the importance of starting your financial journey early on in life and ensuring that the underlying assumptions used when modelling your retirement plan are realistic.

END-OF-LIFE PLANNING

Should you be diagnosed with an illness that will have an impact on your future mental capacity, our advice is to involve your partner and/or family in the decisionmaking process while you are still of sound mind – with honest communication and transparency being integral to the process. You may also want to consider a living will which is a declaration of your non-consent to artificial life support in the event that you are unable to communicate. Although not legally enforceable, it is a helpful guide for your doctors and family members as to your last wishes. Advances in science and medicine can result in our bodies outperforming our minds, especially as we age. Although not foolproof, there are mechanisms we can employ while we are mentally sound to relieve the future financial, legal and emotional burdens associated with diseases like dementia, and it is worth applying one’s mind to these matters. 

Although there are over 2.5 million South Africans diagnosed with dementia, and many more who have yet to be diagnosed, the disease is not listed as a Prescribed Minimum Benefit and is not recognised as a chronic condition. There is also a severe shortage of affordable care facilities for those suffering from the illness. On top of this, our legislation provides limited options for managing the affairs of a dementia sufferer. Managing the affairs of a loved one who has diminished mental capacity forms part of estate planning. A general power of attorney, which grants an agent the power to act on behalf of a principal, falls away when the principal becomes mentally incapacitated, leaving family members with limited options. These options include: CURATOR BONIS This is an expensive (around R50 000) high court application to appoint a legal representative to manage the affairs of a mentally incapacitated person. Cumbersome and onerous, it is only really accessible for high net worth estates. ADMINISTRATOR An application to the Master for the appointment of an administrator costs around R5 000 and is a less cumbersome process than the above. SPECIAL TRUSTS A special trust can be used to house the assets of a dementia sufferer, although the trust needs to be set up prior to the person becoming mentally incapacitated.

Toeka Stoor Toeka Stoor on the Brahms Domaine Wine estate is a treasure trove of old collectables ranging from tractors, cars, zinc baths, anvils of every shape and size, LP's (remember those?), vintage clothing and furniture and the largest collection of old singer sewing machines I have ever seen. One can sit in amongst the memorabilia of years gone by and enjoy a meal or arrange for a wine tasting. The grounds outside are part of a green footprint project where more than 1 000 trees have been planted. Walking through the estate one can spot the ancient

windmills, ploughshares and boats that are oddly out of place in the grass. Walking up the hill one discovers the green lawns and white tables and chairs of the wedding venue that looks over the small dam surrounded by bull rushes. Although it was quiet and serene on the morning we went there it promises a good party. Back at the stoor we enjoyed a breakfast and a pot of coffee and noticed an interesting play area for children - where they could pretend to drive and recognise

road signs - there are many of these! It is worth the drive to see the multitude of antiques that may have been used by our great grandparents. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 8am to 5 pm. ALEX WHITE

16 year old media enthusiast Alex White is clearly passionate about radio, enjoying the challenge of live interviews and internet streaming for radio. He pioneered a youth radio station ISFM in 2013, is a young presenter at RX Radio at Red Cross War Memorial Childrens' Hospital and produces podcasts of high profile interviews for The Joy of Media, a podcast he launched in January 2019.

A PASSION FOR RADIO

Alex is well set up at home with microphone equipment and appropriate technology to produce podcasts for his newly launched podcast The Joy of Media where he posts weekly podcast episodes of interviews done with inspiring and successful individuals. Learning as he goes along and gathering information beforehand, he knows how to think on his feet during the question and answer sessions. As a presenter at RX Radio - a station for children with content by children, Alex conducts interviews and hosts the #RXTop20 show every alternate Saturday morning, which includes quizzes and competitions.

Memorial Childrens' Hospital in 2016 by Dr Gabriel Urgoiti, a medical doctor with a keen interest in the use of broadcast media to get health information to as many people as possible and is founder of Zibonele radio. Alex and Dr Urgoiti were introduced in 2015 and since then Alex has had a part in developing the youth radio station which is broadcast 24 hours a day to the wards by radio and by television. The hospital patients are given the opportunity to learn how to become junior reporters. They are trained to conduct their own interviews - an experience which distracts them from their illness and gives them a chance to tell their life story. Alex describes how his most memorable interview was with a young patient with cancer who displayed enormous courage and positivity in the face of their ill health.

FUNDING RX RADIO

RX Radio received funding to launch from The Hospital Trust, but it is aiming to be self sufficient and with that in mind the staff of five and Alex are arranging events such as their first youth music festival to be held in October this year. Alex is involved in producing a promotional video for the event, using his experience gained through producing YouTube videos.

from KFM Mornings to take part in a quiz show. From here Alex received an invite from Darren Simpson to host his own show on Sunday morning from 1am to 4am. Alex described the experience as awesome and invaluable in his career development.

ANY TIME FOR HOBBIES? "I have a wide variety of interests, and have learned how to juggle them. I am studying accounting, biology and IT at school, along with history as an extra subject, where I get a lot of practice in essay writing. One of my favourite hobbies is photography. My first camera was a disposable with film, then my grandparents gave me a point and shoot. My dad is also interested in photography, so I inherited his digital DSLR last year just before we went to the Karoo National Park. I am a great lover of nature and enjoy taking photographs. Interestingly my most recent interview for The Joy of Media was with the U17 Young Wildlife photographer of the Year for 2018, Skye Meaker.

DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE? I would like to establish a self funding podcasting company, with individual sponsorship and some advertising. These are interviews done by Alex White founder of youth radio ISFM in 2013 (Internet Strike FM), and #RXTop20 host at RX Radio. He is becoming an accomplished radio show host/producer managing music, interviews and voice-overs and has even had the opportunity with KFM to host his very own early morning show.

Kseniya Filinova-Bruton enjoyed a typical Russian New Year with her family in her hometown of St Petersburg. The family made many happy memories.

Kseniya experiences the Christmas lights in Moscow

t Petersburg, the cultural capital of Russia was founded by Tsar Peter The Great in 1703 as a gateway to the Baltic Sea. It is located on the delta of the River Neva, in the Gulf of Finland and is nicknamed "City of 101 Islands". Bridges connecting the islands (currently about 42 islands) are opened in the summer months, when the river is not frozen, to allow ships to pass through (May to October). We explore St Petersburg in the deep winter months with our traveller Kseniya Filinova-Bruton as she describes her family holiday to celebrate the New Year in true Russian style.

CENTRAL HEATING INSIDE - SNOW OUTSIDE

Of course the winter weather is extremely cold with temperatures dropping to -60 C. It is the positioning of St Petersburg so close to the North Pole that brings the intense cold and the long winter nights with only 5 hours of sunshine. The reverse is true in summer with days lasting almost 19 hours and those with twilight lasting all night called "the white nights”. Bundled up in their warm clothing Kseniya and Bryan's children Sebastian and Kira, enjoyed the snow and had great fun building snowmen, taking sled rides and participating in outdoor theatrical productions - often these were organised by their Russian grandmother Anna Balandina, who organises theatre plays in various schools and theatres including one greatly enjoyed by the family which emulated the Finnish celebration of Christmas – Laplandia, usually an outdoor event with fun activities for children and adults. One of the main traditions during the event is to walk through the Goodluck Arch and receive the magic bell, which should bring you luck for the following year.

THE BANYA EXPERIENCE

Kseniya and her husband and children stayed with her mother, Anna, in an area called Dibunii, just 30 minutes outside of St Petersburg. They were entertained by

The Banya experience! the Samoyed dogs that Anna breeds and trains. The family were also able to sample some of the many pickles made by Anna from vegetables grown in her garden in summer. While staying here the family enjoyed a Russian cleansing tradition involving sitting in a steam room, like a sauna, called a Banya and then cooling off by rolling in the snow – and for those brave enough to try this option - naked. Kseniya's husband Bryan had to be convinced that this was going to be fun! Thereafter the family gathers inside for a warm drink, often consisting of homemade glühwein.

CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS OF ST PETERSBURG

The centre of St Petersburg has been named a UNESCO world heritage site. There is the magnificent architecture of The Hermitage, Palace Square, St Isaacs Cathedral and much more to see, including some fun at the Lego museum. The family trip to the Hermitage, one of the largest art museums in the world was a pleasure using the efficient and safe public transport - always on time - not a minute early or a minute late! In fact there are 5 different sorts of public transport including buses, trains, trams, the subway and electric buses.

TYPICAL RUSSIAN FOOD

Russian food is highly influenced by the east - for example, during winter one of the traditional easy to prepare meals is Pelmeni, which is a Russian version of Chinese dumplings. Most of the fresh food is preserved during autumn for the long winter days ahead when pickles become a large part of the diet - such as pickled fish, pickled cabbage, pickled wild mushrooms and of course you have to try the famous Borscht – a hot version of the traditional beetroot soup, best enjoyed after all the great outside adventures in the snow.

Traditionally, on New Year's Eve Russian people would stay at home amongst close family and friends. The feast of various food and drinks is served and enjoyed well after the clock strikes midnight. The whole country watches the President’s National address on TV five minutes before the count down to the new year, with wishes of prosperity, health and happiness to the Russian people. And then the Kremlin Clock Tower on Red Square in Moscow does the official count down, with many firework displays for a few hours thereafter.

GROWTH OF SSF IN RUSSIA

Kseniya, director of SSFSA (Shakespeare Schools Festival South Africa - see Muse May 2018), launched her first SSF in Moscow in 2018. During her December holiday Kseniya confirmed the continuation of the concept with more schools joining in Moscow and St Petersburg this year, which is proclaimed the Year of the Theatre, celebrating the 455th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. Many schools in Russia are aiming to improve their English literacy among the students and teachers alike, so the festival

is a good opportunity for Russian schools to get involved in learning the language in the creative and engaging way of SSF.

FAVOURITE PLACES TO VISIT In a country with 11 times zones and packed with cultural history one can imagine many holiday destinations within Russia - but plan your trip well and be prepared for the coldest of winters, or days in summer when you have to sleep in a room flooded with sunlight! As well as visiting the Hermitage Kseniya would recommend a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress, one of the very first buildings in St. Petersburg, where Russian Imperial

rulers are buried, the St Petersburg Mint is situated there as well as the Peter and Paul Cathedral. The Fortress is an important part of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg History. There is a daily firing of the cannon from the Naryshkin Bastion at noon. In the summer, the beach is popular for picnics and festivals.
