So, just when we get some relief from the extreme water rationing, we have another round of electricity shortages. To me, “Loadshedding” is not a customer centred term at all. No doubt it was carefully devised by Pubic Relations to deflect blame, but it makes me feel like I am a misbehaving inconvenience to Eskom, to be cast aside when it suits them. From the consumers point of view, “Enforced Denial of Service” is a more personal description of the experience. It is the on-off nature, even if the times are known in advance, that makes it so disruptive. This is very inconvenient at home and more so in the office, but in the factory and workshop environments it is causing real damage to livelihoods and it is not a sustainable condition under which to run a business. Added to this is the uncertainty of how long or how often this will continue to be a problem, which makes it difficult to plan effectively or invest wisely in mitigating measures. At least with water restrictions, the commodity remains available at all times, just subject to sparing use. This makes it somewhat easier to live with and manage. Granted, storing large amounts of electricity in a "dam" for future use is not possible as with water, but on the other hand, electricity can be made as needed which is not the case with water. In true South African style we like to make light of it with jokes and shared memes, but make no mistake, it is a very serious threat to improving the prosperity of the county which so desperately needs to recover from our recent "stolen" decade. We are just beginning to learn of the full extent of the decay in our national energy utility and it makes for chilling reading and listening. It is now clear that there will not be any quick turnaround and that our bulk energy supply will be inadequate and unreliable for years to come. As with the UK’s Brexit conundrum, the can has been kicked as far down the road as it can go... There is no more room under the rug to sweep anything else... This is an urgent and pressing problem which must be addressed with all possible will and speed, however unpalatable the solutions may be.

These swallows are usually found near lakes and dams where they feed aerially on insects. They are intra-African migrants and are found in our region from July until May, although some may over-winter, mainly in the north. They are usually solitary or in pairs and occasionally in family groups. They have a blue-black breast band and a distinctive white throat, and a rufous forehead. Male and female are alike. White windows are visible on the upper side of the tail when flared. They are monogamous and build a mud cup-shaped nest placed under an overhang or a man-made structure, mostly over water. I did some research on my own properties and found that on average they had increased by 40%. 2km runners Tuesday 26 February presented ideal conditions for the Cannons Creek Annual Family Fun Run. The day had started with rain but by the time the first runners went off in the early evening, it was clear, lovely and cool. The race covers lengths of 2km, 4km or 8km and is open to everyone in the Pinelands Community. It is usually held at the end of February or early in March. There are food stalls, so that families can enjoy a lovely evening at the school. Pre-registered runners receive medals, and there are prizes galore up for grabs as well.

WINS FOR PINELANDS TENNIS CLUB STARS Members of (PTC) Pinelands Tennis Club have been winning silverware all around the country recently. Jenny Cerff, who has been a member at Pinelands since 1960, had a fantastic Senior Nationals tournament in Bloemfontein in early March, winning the women's over 60 singles and taking silver in the doubles. Jenny didn't drop a set in her four pool matches in the singles. She got off to a good start in the final, taking the first set 6-3. Her opponent managed to take the second set, also 6-3, leaving it to a third set to decide the Above: Thando Longwe-Smit winner winner. It was close, of the ITF Under-18 singles in but Jenny took it 7-6. In Potchefstroom. the doubles, Jenny and her partner won two out of their three matches, giving them the runners-up spot. Junior members of the club have also had a good run at the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Junior Tournaments. Thando Longwe-Smit, who has been coached by PTC-based Norman McCarthy at MTG (McCarthy Tennis Group) since 2006, won his first ITF Under-18 singles title in Potchefstroom, played in February. The 17-year-old beat the number one seed 6-3 6-4 in the final. He also reached the doubles semifinal, losing in three sets. In a second tournament in Potchefstroom, Thando reached the semifinals of the singles and the finals of the doubles. Thando went on to play in a higher ranked tournament in Pretoria in early March, where he won the doubles and reached the final of the singles. His excellent performances have seen his ranking jump from the 700s to 482 on the ITF World Tennis Tour Junior Rankings. Maretha Burger, who joined PTC last year, played in the same three tournaments as Thando. In the first Potch tournament, she won the doubles and reached the quarterfinals of the singles. She went one step better in the second tournament in Potch, taking both the singles and the doubles titles. Her victory in the singles came in three sets against the second seed, while the doubles saw her and her partner defeat the first seeds, also in three sets. Maretha has jumped to 406 in the ITF World Tennis Tour Junior rankings. The entire Western Province Under-15 boys interprovincial team touring to Bloemfontein and Pretoria during the school holidays is coached by MTG at PTC, and there are several other players in the other age group teams: U13 team: Sagen Hugo, Zara-Leigh Oliphant U15 team: Ben Macfarlane, Peet Karsten, Goran Krivokapic, Orbit Mlambo, Malick Majiet. U19 team: Kyler Hugo, Almaaz Saloojee. U15 Invitational team: Shaun Krieg, Emma Foster.

FUNTASTIC RED-A-FAIR! Pinelands North Primary School (PNPS) parents and pupils once again showed their community spirit by pulling off another successful Red-a-Fair.

Not only do all parents, teachers and pupils work together to plan and manage the fundraising event, but the communities of Pinelands and surrounds enjoy a day filled with food, festivities and loads of fun. Every second year, the Red-a-Fair boasts rides, games, tasty treats, craft stalls and great entertainment, that the planning team put in tireless months of planning for. Each event draws crowds who are seldom disappointed and always on a high when the day draws to a close. Fair convenor, Jacqui Tooke, explains with a smile, “It is always humbling to see everyone from our school work together and pull off such a big, enjoyable day. Even our principal, Ann Morton, can be seen either getting a henna tattoo from one of our external vendors, being an excellent sport in the Dunk-The-Teacher challenge, or walking around with a recycling bag making sure all waste is properly recycled”. Besides fuelling lasting memories for the school community, the fair is a green event with active recycling, reduction of single-use plastics and a move towards biodegradable packaging. PNPS would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Pinelands community for their support. Funds raised will go towards replacing the school’s Art Room.

Tom Botha celebrates his 80th birthday on the 25th of March. Tom and his family have, other than a short absence in the 1980’s, been Pinelands residents since the mid 1970’s The older residents of Pinelands will remember Tom as the Chief Superintendent of Public Works for the old Pinelands Municipality, a position he held for 15 years until the Cape Town takeover, when he chose early retirement rather than “becoming a payroll number” in Cape Town. He recalls with pride the achievements of the Public Works staff, who with limited numbers and resources, always strived to give Pinelands the very best service, for example, often working through the night to repair a broken water main to ensure that the residents had water for the start of the new day. Tom is still very active, keeping busy with metal work and helping his son Tom Botha (junior) with his pool business. He loves to decorate his house in Poplar Way every year for Christmas, much to the delight of many residents and visitors. The “House of Lights” as it has become known, is a particular attraction for children. Tom is adamant that being 80 years “young” does not mean that one has to have idle hands and he intends to keep on living life to the full.

PINEWOOD VILLAGE ACKNOWLEDGES LOCAL FIREFIGHTERS

The residents at Pinewood Village in Pinelands contributed various yummy goodies, made up in colourful hampers, which were handed out to the Fire men and women at the Epping Fire Station in December 2018. Yvonne Ellis and Olivia

Muchapondwa from the village had the honour of handing over the hampers to the Chief Fire Officer and some staff on duty. The General Manager of Pinewood Village in Pinelands, Mr Pieter Janse van Rensburg, said this initiative forms part of the Village's

Corporate Social Responsibility and was also in line with the season of Goodwill. The residents acknowledge the efforts of the Epping Fire Station in ensuring the safety of Cape Town and surrounding areas during the fire season.

Go Radio have developed a complete radio package in a box that is aimed directly at schools to get setup and opening their own online radio station and is within almost every school's budget, so long as the school has a stable internet connection. Go Radio approached Cannons Creek Independent School in Pinelands with the concept, which takes what is being taught and learnt in schools and harnesses technology, giving the pupils a real world experience that prepares them to live and function in the age of technology. Principal Mike van Haght literally jumped up in his seat and said “yes, yes, yes…this is a real way to work with teachers, pupils and the curriculum bringing it all to life in a real

world scenario of online radio”. Van Haght went on to say; “we are so proud to be the first school radio station in South Africa and in keeping with our station slogan "the playground today of tomorrow’s creative problem solvers", we launched Cannons Creek Radio (www. cannonscreekradio.co.za). Together with Go Radio we are changing the way in which pupils and teachers teach and learn, and the journey is going to be one of growth and development. We look forward to sharing what we have learnt and will learn with other schools. Someone has to be first and we have gladly taken the first step into the future”. Teachers are increasingly being asked how they are preparing their pupils for the 21st century:

• W hat are children/school-leavers lacking when they leave the hallowed halls of our educational establishments? • What skills are actually needed in this 21st century where we all find ourselves? • Is what we teach relevant? • How best do we foster collaboration, grow confidence and also develop communication skills, all of which are vital in the real working world today. The new radio station at Cannons Creek has been greeted with great excitement from pupils who received their first training sessions in preparing for radio interviews and editing for podcasts. Seen in the image are grade 7 pupils who completed a project for their Economic Management Science by interviewing each other. Tristan asked Hlubikazi questions about her informal business, asking where her business was and what were the challenges. Chris in turn asked Lucian about his electrical appliance informal business - based on the Pinelands collector of unused electrical goods. The pupils were keen to use the recording apparatus and are still to edit their interviews for a professional finish that others will enjoy listening to. Wendy Joubert, the station manager and teacher comments that this innovation added to the teaching methods is creating great interest in the technology which will include interviews via mobile phones and voice over internet (VOIP). Putting themselves in the shoes of the informal traders also encourages empathy. PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOL FEATURE AT THE SAICE AQUALIBRIUM COMPETITION Pinelands High School entered a team in the 2019 South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) regional Aqualibrium Competition held at UCT and placed third out of a number of schools. The teams were tasked to design a model water distribution network to distribute three litres of water equally between three points on the grid using two different diameter pipes and connection pieces. They were then judged on how well they executed the task – working on a penalty points system. The teams had an hour in which to plan, design, build and operate their network.

The evening was a resounding success and featured music from Pinelands High School, Pinelands North Primary, Pinehurst Primary and Forres Preparatory School. Creating and protecting your wealth

The stress-free retirement myth About half of life’s most stressful events are likely to happen to us during retirement, so the concept of a ‘stress-free’ retirement is unlikely. Some of the psychological repercussions associated with the transition into retirement include partial identity disruption, diminished self-trust, postretirement void and death anxiety. Many retirees feel overwhelmed by the number of choices to be made, while others experience lack of confidence. Death anxiety is a real retirement fear causing anxiety and depression, which leads to other illnesses. Let’s discuss the 5 top retirement stressors in the context of financial planning:

1. Death of a spouse

This is ranked as the number one stressor, causing chronic stress and depression impacting on health and life expectancy. The death of a spouse also has financial implications which can cause added stress for the surviving spouse. Financial planning considerations include: • Know where your will is kept and that it is updated • Ensure open communication about funeral and burial arrangements • Draft a letter of wishes - let your loved ones know you are to be an organ donor • Let your spouse know of any life or funeral cover • Know what happens to your spouse’s estate in the event of his/her death

BUSH DIARIES KAROO NATIONAL PARK

South Africa is home to 17 National Parks and for those of us in the Cape the incredible Karoo National Park is the ultimate weekend getaway for families needing a break. This national park is known for its heritage, beauty and tranquillity! Our family went for a 3-night stay and it was just enough time to enjoy all that the park has to offer. On the way there we stopped midway during the five hour drive for breakfast at the Lord Milner Hotel in Matjiesfontein.

OUR CHALET IN THE MAJESTIC MOUNTAINS

You enter the park by means of a main gate off the N12, you then travel a short 12km before getting to the rest camp. We stayed in the chalets, which have breakfast in the Salt & Pepper Restaurant, included in the rate. The restaurant is definitely a big selling point for families, who will have hungry teens to feed! The Karoo Jacks will fill up even the most ravenous teenager! The view from the chalets is unbelievable. An integrated undercover braai area, meant that our evenings were really enjoyable and were enhanced by the insane beauty of the sky at night.

THE STARRY NIGHT SKIES

Before we went on our trip to the Karoo, I downloaded the free version of a stargazing app to my Android smartphone called SkyView. It allows you to point your phone at any stars in the night sky and using your phoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s camera and gyroscopes it can create an augmented reality view of your sky. If you point your phone at a celestial body, it will tell you the name of the object and loads of interesting info as well as the trajectories of certain objects like comets. You can also find out and see where the International Space Station, Hubble Telescope, Sun or any of the planets in our solar system are at any time. A great app in places with no light pollution.

ACTIVITIES INCLUDING MOUNTAIN BIKING

Before we came to the park, I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sure what I would be able to do in what I thought was an endless world of shrubs. So, a few days before our trip I checked the SANParks website. Our time spent in the park was filled with non-stop activity, starting with the newly opened Sylvester Single Track for mountain biking and hiking. It starts off near the far gate of the camp (that leads to Klipspringer Pass), and winds up a hill. The initial climb is quite tough, but once you are at the top, the journey is epic and you can enjoy 1.7km of beautiful scenery and views. The track is not that difficult and although I did get off my bike every now and then to traverse a particularly difficult part, I really enjoyed it! There were times along the track when I felt like it was just me, the shrubs and the mountains!

NEW LOOK – SAME FANTASTIC STAFF spectacular setting. The amount of small tracks through the camp really surprised me. I am a passionate runner, and really enjoyed all the different routes that could be taken. For the younger kids there are loads of flat paths and roads that they can cycle along, while trying to spot many of the large tortoise inhabitants of the camp! For the studious or simply curious, there is a Fossil Trail in the camp which showcases real fossils from the surrounding area.

THE BIRD HIDE

At the end of the Sylvester Track, you come out into a small parking area, next to the entrance to the camp’s bird hide. The hide is a great place for the birders in the family to spend their time. In our case, my dad. He is practically a walking, talking, Robert’s Bird Guide! The hide overlooks a small wetland, where most twitchers will easily be able to spend a couple of hours. Birds we ticked off included the Lesser Swamp Warbler, Moorhen and a resident community of Southern Masked Weavers. At the end of a busy day out in the bush you can cool off in the rest camp’s pool.

GAME SIGHTINGS EVERY DAY

While you shouldn’t come to the park to see lion, there are a good number of them around. Several of them have had tracking chips attached and each morning the rangers put their last known locations up on the various sightings boards. The highlight of our trip was probably during our first day in the park. On our afternoon game drive we spotted Cape Mountain Zebra, kudu and gemsbok. As the sun began to set we noticed a single car stopped up ahead on the road. Suddenly, there were excited hisses of “rhino” and pandemonium ensued. We had spotted two black rhino on the first day of our trip! Another notable sighting on our trip was klipspringer. Klipspringer are small,

extremely agile antelope that live in rocky, mountainous areas like the Karoo. They pair off for life and are quite skittish. Due to this, it is common for one klipspringer to keep a lookout while the other eats. They are extremely agile and can race up the side of a seemingly flat mountain face in seconds. We came across a pair of klipspringer on the side of the road of the aptly named Klipspringer Pass. Quite contrary to its description, the klipspringer we came across stood still for a long time and we were able to watch them for ages!

GUIDED WALKS

Guided walks and drives can also be organised with reception. They do come at an extra cost, but feeling adventurous, my dad and I embarked on an early morning walk. Even though it was still the warm season, the morning was extremely cold, Counsellor so we layered up! The walk took us out of the camp on a 3.5km route to the top of the hill with an armed guide, who was passionate and extremely knowledgeable about all the different fauna and flora. GILLIAN HAIDEN Much loved Pinelands Librarian Gillian Haiden has begun a well deserved retirement after 25 years service to the community. Her desire to be part of the development of a "Nation of Readers" - a literate society, has been satisfied by the children's reading programmes run at the Pinelands library.

THE IMPORTANCE OF READING

Gill remembers the days of growing up in Port Elizabeth, when at the age of five her father would read her bedtime stories. The story of Pinocchio is clear in her mind as if it were yesterday and her love of reading has never diminished. Seeing children read in the library and grow every year, then seeing them doing their honours and masters degrees gives her great joy. Gill would read to her own children when they were still babes in arms stimulating their minds with pictures and stories. In

fact says Gill "I was quite sad when my girls became independent and could read for themselves, as it was a special time that we shared - filled with laughter". Her eldest daughter Ingrid is a physiotherapist. Then Melissa followed an acting career and is currently touring New Zealand with a role in the Mousetrap. Her youngest daughter Sarah has a Masters degree in Environmental Science and lives in Bath in the UK. Sarah's son is Gill's first grandchild and there is no doubt that retirement will afford Gill and Ron the time to keep up with their grandson's progress.

WHAT DOES RETIREMENT HOLD FOR GILL?

I have been noting down the things I would like to do when I retire. There are more than 200 ideas for me to contemplate! I have already begun to enjoy my gardening, tidying up my home and reading books recommended by my daughters. Ron is also retired and we hope to do some local travel exploring the Western Cape, the Little Karoo, the Eastern Cape and Namibia. Every other year we hope to visit my daughter and grandson in Bath. Next year our overseas travel will include a trip to Portugal, inspired by the book Forget-me-not Blues by Marita van der Vyver. Her word imagery is amazing and one can almost feel and sense the colours of beautiful ceramics, taste the seafood and chicken dishes, the wine and hear the music. Planning this trip will be my job in the months to come. Our travels to Europe before now have catered more for my husband's interest in architecture, which was his love before becoming a

Civil Engineer and ultimately a Transport Engineer working on the My City project.

YOUR FAVOURITE BOOKS

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is one of my all time favourites. I enjoy stories of beautiful relationships such as The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce; and Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. A good non fiction book relevant to my time of life is Being Mortal by Atul Gawande.

YOUR LOVE FOR PINELANDS LIBRARY

Although there have been technological changes in the way we access our literature, I find that parents still enjoy reading to their children, who in turn love coming to the library to experience a place where people enjoy books. The library systems have changed a few times in the last 25 years, but we have just had to cope and the Pinelands public have been very patient and kind when we struggle with the new formats. Readers in the children's section of the library increased dramatically when we introduced the holiday reading programme - some of them returning afterwards to take out books - a wonderful sight! I have worked with amazing people and am very grateful for the support from my head librarians over the years and the mentoring from English teachers who taught me to love David Copperfield and my lecturers at university who developed my love for poetry. Most importantly, thank you to the Pinelands community who inspired me every day!" We wish Gillian well on her retirement. ď&#x20AC;ź

LIFE AS AN ENGLISH TEACHER

When Gillian's husband Ron completed his Masters in Urban Design and Regional Planning in Edinburgh, the couple moved to Johannesburg where Gill taught high school English for two years. They were thrilled to move to Cape Town when Ron was offered a position here and settled immediately in Pinelands in a house which is still their family home after 36 years. While teaching at St Cyprians, Gill fell pregnant with her first child, Ingrid. Wanting to be available for her children Gill decided to study for her B. Bibl through Unisa. So the next four years saw three children added to the family and a degree in Librarianship. The field work for the degree was done at Pinelands Library where Gill met the most wonderful staff and a very inspiring head librarian and mentor Carol Smuts. Within a short time a permanent post became available and ultimately Gill was appointed as the Head of the Children's Library, where she has been for 22 years.

PINELANDER Garrick Orchard, a neuromorphic engineer, combines his interest in medicine and his aptitude for computer technology and mathematics into a career that satisfies his commitment in both fields. The Muse catches up with Garrick as he prepares to take up a position with Intel working on their Loihi artificial neural chip in Santa Clara.

CAREER INSPIRATION

When Garrick completed his degree in 2006 from UCT, obtaining a first class pass in electrical and computer engineering, he was invited by a visiting professor to complete his PhD at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Garrick and a fellow UCT student who had worked together on a final year project were delighted to be able to experience an education at a university with a biomedical engineering programme ranked best in the world. The university’s current R&D budget is close to $2.5 billion per year and the university hospital ranked best in the world over 20 times in the last 30 years.

LIFE AT BALTIMORE

Campus life in Baltimore was tough with private security escorts operating after sunset to keep students safe - it is not surprising that the TV series The Wire highlights crime in the area. Garrick had a busy time in the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics winning awards for his research projects and publishing. He became heavily involved in the annual NSF Telluride Neuromorphic Cognition Engineering Workshop - a great three week getaway to

NUS · SINAPSE - SINGAPORE INSTITUTE FOR NEUROTECHNOLOGY

After completing his PhD in electrical and computer engineering in 2012 Garrick moved to Singapore, which soon became one of his favourite places. Here he experienced a completely different atmosphere of order, cleanliness and safety. Upon arrival he helped to launch the Neuromorphic Engineering efforts at the newly formed Singapore Institute for Neurotechnology at the National University of Singapore, and later transitioned to Temasek Laboratories after securing a fellowship and funding from Singapore’s Ministry of Defence. Garrick explains that Neuromorphic Engineering studies the way our brains use neurons and synapses to problem solve, and attempts to mimic these biological processes using electrons in silicon to form an inorganic type of neural network. As a form of artificial intelligence the technology is aiming for applications in the fields of medicine, robotics, mobile devices, and autonomous vehicles.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE WORLDWIDE

In 2013 and 2014 Garrick spent time as a visiting researcher in Paris working with Prof. Ryad Benosman at the Institut de la Vision on algorithms for an energy efficient model for an artificial retina. He also spent time as a visiting PhD student at

the Institute for Neuroinformatics in Zurich working under Prof. Giacomo Indiveri investigating the feasibility of using Neuromorphic sensors for the European Space Agency. Garrick's CV makes for impressive reading and his experience has led him to 22 destinations in five years including Taiwan, China, Malaysia Canada, Italy, Colorado, California and Oregon.

EARLY LIFE IN PINELANDS

Born in Zimbabwe, Garrick and his family came to Pinelands before he was a year old. Garrick was head boy of the Red School in 1997 and completed his matric at Pinelands High School. He has a keen interest in hockey and played for Pinelands High, Pinelands Hockey club and some junior provincial teams. He was also a member of the First Pinelands Scouts. In the cities he has lived in recently especially Singapore he has seen rapid construction and changes around him. Did he see any changes in Pinelands? "Not really - it is much the same as I remember it growing up here".

CAREER ADVICE

The current challenges facing South African universities make research tough. But as for anything that you are passionate about, know your own worth, and get to know the opportunities available. Adopt a growth mind set and don't be afraid to fail - your ego may be hurt for a while but you will learn so much in the process. We wish Garrick well with his work at Intel. 

The Loihi processor is a biologically inspired computer chip that aims to mimic how our brains work. Known as neuromorphic computing, it differs from conventional computing in that it computes using artificial neurons and synapses. Most importantly this technology uses much less energy than conventional computing approaches. The young person who comes to school feeling anxious about learning in the classroom because the atmosphere is unfriendly, or who comes to school nervous about peers who may make her feel uncomfortable is not safe. The young person who comes to school worried about being shoved in the corridor or being called a name is not safe. The young person who comes to school unsure that the adults around him have his best interests at heart is not safe. And the young person who comes to school not sure that adults are going to behave as adults is not safe.

SO WHEN IS A SCHOOL A SAFE PLACE? It starts with the adults. When young people see that the adults in the school are strong role models who can control their emotions and who can set appropriate boundaries between themselves and the young people in their care, they feel safe. When young people witness adults in the school treating each other with respect and dignity, they feel safe. When young people believe that the adults in the school will apply the rules consistently and fairly, they will feel safe. When young people know that their views will be listened to and respected, and when they know that

the adults in their lives will point out to them, gently but firmly, when they are being inappropriate â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they will feel safe. When young people know that the classroom or the sports field or the music ensemble is a place where they are loved and respected, where they are held to high standards and where they can make mistakes without fear of humiliation or victimisation, they feel safe. When young people are not made to feel anxious by adults who set unrealistic expectations for them or treat them unkindly, they feel safe, and they are able to learn or perform at a high level, because anxiety and fear block learning. When young people know that there are firm and swift consequences for bullying or harassment, and that the school does not tolerate any form of intimidation, they feel safe. When young people know that they can approach an adult and share a fear or an incident without fear of victimisation, they feel safe.

WHAT RESPONSIBILITY DOES THE YOUNG PERSON HAVE IN RETURN?

Young people also have a responsibility towards each other, the teacher and the school to ensure that the school is a safe

place. Adults simply cannot be present under all circumstances, and much of the interaction between young people happens on social media after hours. Therefore the creation of a safe school rests in part with the young people as well. When they are able to accept (and celebrate) differences between them, when they look out for one another and treat each other with respect, and when they deal honestly and fairly with one another, the school is a much safer place.

A PLACE OF SAFETY School safety runs so much deeper than the obvious markers of freedom from physical bullying, substance abuse, and emotional abuse. A safe organisation is where the core values of respect, care, and acceptance of difference are lived out by its staff and students, and where everyone feels valued. A safe school frees everyone who works and studies there to be able to develop to their full potential by embracing challenges, by being able to collaborate with others, by being able to make mistakes and to learn from them in a supportive environment, and by being able to step out of their comfort zones without fear of humiliation or judgement. ď&#x20AC;ź

OUT AND ABOUT We recently re-discovered this wonderful theatre at 68 Orange Street which used to be the haunt of serious movie buffs, and was known as a place showing films that were a bit out of the ordinary. Our interest was in the Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody and the life of Freddie Mercury. An absolute bonus was being able to sit outside amongst the greenery and enjoy a pre movie drink and snack...and then one is able to take your drink into the theatre to enjoy during the movie. Wonderfully civilised! Tickets are inexpensive (R50) and the Labia has three movie houses which cater for those expecting "quality" movies as well as those suitable for a larger audience and children. The Labia Theatre

website advertises "meal deals" (about R110 for two meals and tickets) with local restaurants; and the film agenda is posted along with the trailers. Live events are also found here. Parking can be a challenge with the UCT Hiddingh campus across the road no longer allowing Labia patrons to park there. We were happy to park at the Kloof Street Lifestyle Centre parking and walk the couple of blocks to the theatre.
