We are now well and truly into the new year, indeed, a new decade - the reverie and celebrations of the the recent year end fading into the business cycle of life. As I started writing this column, the song playing on the radio was the old Beatles classic, Let It Be. It set me wondering – might this be a good attitude with which to approach this new stretch of life ahead? The past is a like a circle of old friends we have known all our lives. They are not with us all the time, but their presence surrounds us and shapes our character. We have had our ups and downs with them, but we know them well and are quite comfortable with them. The present is a moving moment, where the world in all its variety keeps stepping up to meet us. It is where the story of our lives is really written, where we are surprised, angry, happy, bored... Here is where we choose how to react to these emotions to guide the direction of our life from the indelible past to the fluid future we hope to shape. The future is like the strangers we have just met. We may have some idea about who they are and what they will do. We may have some intention of where our mutual relationship might go as we converse with them but we cannot be sure. We are just a part of the engine driving the future foward. Points in our future will surely also have ups and downs despite our best efforts to mould them to our wishes. This may be where an attitude of Let It Be would be good for us. When the future takes us to somewhere we did not want to be, accepting the truth of what is, rather than holding on to past dreams of what it was supposed to be, is probably the quickest way to find peace, learn something new and set a course for our next destination. May your new year hold a little magic, some surprises and peace and learning for you. Enjoy the edition!

This intra-African migrant is a fairly common visitor during summer over the Peninsula. It is easily distinguishable by its deeply forked tail and bright yellow bill and legs. It occurs singly, in pairs, or flocks. Flocks are most common during termite emergences. With just a few weeks to go before the end of the 2019/2020 tax year, now is the perfect time to get your financial affairs in order. It’s also a good time to determine whether you’ve maximised your tax benefits in respect of:

Retirement Annuities

An RA is a very tax-efficient way to save for retirement – either as a standalone investment or to supplement your existing pension/provident fund. Legislation permits investors to contribute up to 27.5% of taxable income as a tax deduction (up to a maximum of R350 000 per year).

Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSA)

A TFSA is a great way to save towards a longterm goal. The main benefit of a TFSA is that the growth within the underlying fund is free from interest, dividend and capital gains tax. Individuals are permitted to invest up to R33 000 per year into a TFSA, with a lifetime maximum contribution of R500 000.

Using retirement annuities to build longterm wealth If used optimally, a retirement annuity can be a powerful vehicle for building longterm wealth and securing a comfortable retirement. Apart from the obvious tax benefits of an RA, there are a number of other advantages: • Investment flexibility: When investing in an RA, investors have a wide range of unit trusts to choose from allowing both local and international exposure. Investors can choose their underlying investments and have some flexibility in how their contributions are invested. • Premium flexibility: Investors can stop and start contributions as they choose without any penalties being charged. Premiums can be set up via monthly, quarterly or annual debit order, or can be paid over manually on an ad hoc basis. • Retirement savings top-up: If you are currently contributing to your company’s retirement fund but not making full use of your 27.5% of taxable income allowance, you can use an RA to top up for investments. • No penalties: The fee structure of a unit trust RA is similar to that of a discretionary unit trust investment. All investment, platform and adviser fees are disclosed upfront and no cancellation or termination fees or penalties are payable. • Transparency: Unit trust RAs offer refreshing transparency in respect of portfolio construction, investment returns, fees and reporting. • Accessibility: Knowing that your funds can’t be accessed before age 55, except in the case of ill-health or emigration, provides peace of mind and removes the temptation to borrow against your future. • Long-term growth: If you begin investing in an RA early in your career, the longterm time horizon will allow you to select more aggressive investment strategies which should provide you with favourable market returns over time. • Tax exempt: RAs are exempt from tax on

dividends and interest, and no Capital Gains Tax is payable on growth earned in the investment. At retirement, investors are also able to withdraw up to one-third of their investment as a lump sum of which the first R500 000 is tax-free. • Your estate: A significant benefit of an RA is that it does not form part of your estate. In the event of your passing, the funds in your RA can be paid directly to your nominated beneficiaries to aid them financially after your death. • No estate duty: As the money in your RA does not form part of your estate, these funds are not subject to estate duty. • Creditors: Legislation aims to ensure that the money in your retirement annuity is earmarked for retirement and protected from creditors. However, bear in mind that this does not apply to tax owed to SARS and maintenance claims. • Emigration: If you decide to emigrate from South Africa, legislation permits you to access the full amount invested in your retirement annuity, bearing in mind that the withdrawal will be taxed. • Ill-health: If you are ill and unable to continue working, you may qualify for early retirement from your retirement if you have not yet reached age 55. • Reinvest tax returns: If you are currently contributing towards a retirement, you are likely to receive a tax refund from SARS at the end of this tax year. A great way of re-employing your money and further boosting your retirement savings is to reinvest your tax refund into your RA. • Ad hoc: Any bonus, inheritance or financial windfall can be injected into your retirement annuity on an ad hoc basis, although it is important to calculate the most tax-efficient level of doing this. For those who haven’t yet started saving for retirement, the beginning of the new tax year in February 2020 is the perfect time to begin. If you haven’t maximised your 2019/2020 contributions, you still have time to do it. 

“As promised, we switched the lights on at 11:30pm on 8 December 2019 only to have Eskom switch them off 1 hour later. The following week we were in the dark on three occasions due to load shedding. Visitors promptly nick-named the doggie in the attached photo “Eskom”. The rest of the season went off well and the amount of interest was gratifying. Each visiting child received a lollipop - we handed out close to 200, including a few to some rather older “children.” The Christmas lights attracted a gathering of all races, colour and creed. It was marvellous to see such a diverse mix coming together in the true spirit of Christmas. To all who donated cash in aid of the SPCA or promised to do so, thank you very much. Also thanks to the thoughtfulness of those who brought some chocolates and sweets and even lollipops to replenish our stock. Above all, thank you to the community for their support. After starting in 2018 with 40 children in two classes, the preschool now provides a Reggio Emilia inspired education for 60 children in three classes. These three classes will progress to two grade 1 classes in 2021, unfortunately leaving no space for additional children to be accommodated into grade 1 in future.

This means that should you want your child educated at Pinelands North, you will need to make the decision earlier than grade 1 to include your child in Red Roots. Applications open on 17 February and close on 17 March, and application forms are currently available from the PNPS front office, or from the PNPS website. A WCED online form will also need to be completed while applications are open. Pinelands’ families will then be interviewed early in April, and acceptances sent by the middle of May.

Ann Morton will visit the town of Reggio Emilia in northern Italy later in April 2020 on behalf of the school. One WCED departmental official visited in November 2019, and Ann will be the first Western Cape public school principal to do so!

Congratulations to Pinelands High School top 2019 NSC achievers Pinelands High School is very proud of their 2019 Matric class of 189 students. Fifteen candidates scored aggregates of 80% or above, with four of the fifteen achieving seven Subject Distinctions. The top students were: Rana Ebrahim (92.1% aggregate), Gareth Rosant (87.6% aggregate), Casey Coetzee (86.0% aggregate), Thomas Schroeder (85.3% aggregate) and Aniqah Gamildien (84.9% aggregate). NEW BEGINNINGS AND NEW EXPERIENCES Renée Meissner Principal La Gratitude Pre-Primary School

Well, here we are at the beginning of yet another year, looking forward to new experiences. How do we make the most of what our beautiful country has to offer?

FAMILIES NOT BOTHERED BY THE COLD

Having recently returned from an amazing holiday break in Norway and the UK, I was amazed to see how families cope with the cold, rainy inclement weather. Nothing seemed to deter them from being outdoors. Moms were still out doing their shopping with babies in prams/strollers. Children were in seats on the front or back of bicycles, all togged up cosy, warm and dry; school playgrounds were bustling with children playing outside.

PRE-SCHOOL GROUPS OUT FOR THE DAY

It was interesting to see the garde robe area of one of the world’s biggest Gingerbread town displays in Bergen, where so many pre-school groups under the age of 6, were visiting. I was rather thankful that I was not in charge of sorting out the pile of hats, gloves, scarves or boots, and the de-robing and then re-robing them again, when they left in their cosy snow suits.

BEAUTIFUL SUNNY SOUTH AFRICA

My experiences in the cold North made me think about how fortunate, thankful and grateful I am to be living where I do!

However, news time at School on a Monday morning, over the years, has shown me how few families get out to enjoy and do things together as a family – even when the weather is or has actually been good!

TIME TO ENJOY OUR TIDAL POOLS

So, come on, how about deciding that this year you as a family are going to explore more of our amazing natural beauty. We have some really special rock pools or tidal pools that families can explore. They are free (besides petrol and car guard tips) and safe to swim in (of course you as a parent will still need to keep an eye on your child/children). The natural rock pools, and all they contain, are waiting to be explored. To name a few: St James, Dalebrook and Wooley’s at Kalk Bay, (both of which are usually almost wind-free even when the good old South Easter is blowing it’s guts out!), Glencairn (usually less busy but further away), Camps Bay tidal pool, Maiden’s Cove (near Camps Bay), and Saunder’s Rocks tidal pool.

ACTIVITIES AT POOLS AND ON THE BEACH

There are often coffee or ice-cream shops nearby for the inevitable refreshment break, if you are able to ‘splash out’. Build and decorate sandcastles with your children, with shells, feathers, seaweed etc found on the beach, and in rock pools. Take your buckets, spades, umbrella, hat and suncream (and apply frequently!) Have a “tide fighting” challenge – check

to see if the tide is coming in, build a castle above the tidal zone and then see whose castle is the last standing as the tide comes in. Please remember to leave any living animals, fish and starfish etc behind in the rock pools, after you have seen them. Many of these pools are very popular as the day wears on, so plan to get there early, to get parking close by, and then leave when the crowds descend later.

PLAN WITH YOUR CHILDREN

Make sure that you tell your children where you are planning to go – teach them the name of the place, and quiz them about the name thereafter, to help them remember it. Involve them in the planning and packing for the activity, so that they can be responsible for carrying, and looking after their own bucket, spade, towel, and hat etc.

MAKE MEMORIES

Most of all have fun and enjoy the time spent outdoors, as a family, or together with another family. Decide to chose and find a new experience or place to visit, and make a memory together, and at the same time, enrich your child with the new experiences too. 

MONTISPECTUS Staying in a cottage on Blaauwberg Hill within the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve in December was like having a quiet retreat on top of the world with the most magnificent panoramic views across Table Bay to Table Mountain; Robben Island; Melkbos and past Duynefontein to the Koeberg Power station. The cottage aptly named Montispectus means “to behold the mountain” named after the Bloubergstrand dwarf burrowing skink (Scelotes montispectus) that was first discovered in the reserve in 2002. The reserve stretches from Eerste Steen on Otto du Plessis Drive between Blouberg Beach and Melkbos Beach, up and over Blaauwberg Hill and includes the Renosterveld Trail. Montispectus cottage used be to part of the accommodation and officer’s mess buildings built during World War II - now renovated for accommodation. We found it very pleasant with a wide wooden deck for superb views, bird watching and bathing in the beautiful sunsets over Robben Island while enjoying the weber evening braai. We watched the changing moods of Table Mountain and enjoyed various weather patterns including being eerily surrounded by cloud... and chased inside by howling wind. The inside of the cottage is an “all in one affair” with four beds, a dining area and a kitchen. The ablutions are a short walk away with a gas fired shower and self composting loo - all very clean and odour free. There is no electricity but lights are powered by solar panels. blew us inside we could still enjoy the views from the shelter of the cottage. A short walk away are the remains of the first radar station built in South Africa and historical records show that these were often “manned” by women. A short walk away is the lookout point with a bench an ideal spot for panoramic shots of the two heritage sites of Table Mountain and Robben Island. We enjoyed visits from an inquisitive Cape Robin-chat and two majestic Yellow Billed Kites as well as an energetic Rock Kestrel. To find the detail about bookings go to the Friends of Blaauwberg Conservation website at www.bca.org.za. Find a gap in their calendar and fill in the forms online. We paid via our rates account with the City Council. Then the fun begins - first collect your cottage keys from Eerste Steen on Otto du Plessis Drive. Then drive on towards Melkbos and head for the four way stop where the road crosses with the R27. Carry on until the Mamre Road turn off for Morningstar. Finaly take a right turn onto Zonnekus Road. This dirt road will lead you into the reserve from the East side of Blaauwberg Hill. You will have keys for the various gates which are to protect the game that has been placed in the reserve. The roads needed a little attention due to erosion but we were told that repairs were imminent after our visit. A friendly parks board guard helped us to carry our luggage from the car park at the top of the hill to the cottage . Call 021 444 0454.

YOUNG ACHIEVERS

16th International Maths and Science Olympiad in Vietnam Athra Toffar, Jonathan Walker and Heather Robson share their experiences at the 16th IMSO held in Hanoi, Vietnam; along with some of their sightseeing favourites. In December 2019 Athra and Jonathan (Pinehurst pupils) and Heather (St George’s Grammar) were part of the South African team attending the 16th International Maths and Science Olympiad in Hanoi, Vietnam. Six children aged between 12 and 13 from Cape Town made up the Science section of the team and the maths team was made up of children from Durban. Although the children represented their country as a team - they completed the written and practical challenges as individuals.

MAKING FRIENDS AND SEEING NEW SIGHTS

All the children enjoyed the event where they made friends with other children from Durban and also from the other countries attending. In the two short days before the competition the children were able to do a bit of sightseeing and their favourite venue was the 150 metre long pedestrian Golden Bridge in the Ba Na Hills, near Da Nang. To get there one takes a beautiful gondola ride over magnificent scenery to the top of the Ba Na Mountain. From Da Nang the team took a 16 hour train journey to Hanoi where the competition was held.

“We arrived at the airport. All six of the Cape Town team arrived one by one with

music to listen to, and you could even watch the flight navigation on screen! On arriving in Vietnam, we took a bus from the airport to our hotel.

FUN PLACES VISITED AT DA NANG

We visited all kinds of fun places! We went to the beach, to the mall, an amazing place called Ba Na Hills, where the famous Golden Bridge is. We went to the arcade, on a roller coaster, to a museum, on a boat ride and so much more! We did some pottery and went shopping! On the first day there, we were given a wrist band with the teacher’s contact details in case of an emergency.

TRAIN TRIP FROM DA NANG TO HANOI

While we waited for the train from Da Nang to Hanoi we started learning a dance for the cultural evening. We stayed on the train overnight and were told that it was first class. Well, it wasn’t the best experience, but it was fun, although it was very shaky.

INSPIRATION AT THE OPENING CEREMONY

In Hanoi we practiced the dance almost every day, for the cultural evening, which took place a day or two after the tests, which brings me to the main part of our trip, the competition. It all started at an opening ceremony to which we were invited. There were some amazing performances that took place as well as some inspiring welcome and good luck speeches. All the countries were introduced. Our team found it quite funny when our South African team went up and the Saudi Arabian flag was displayed in the background by mistake.

For the science competition, there were two theory papers, a multiple choice and a short answer/essay, and there was an experiment, of which there were 2 parts. For both maths and science, the two theory papers were done on the same day, just a few hours apart, and the experiment and exploration were done the day after. The first test was 60 minutes, the second, 90 minutes and the third was 120 minutes.

CLOSING CEREMONY AND AWARDS

After the last test, a little later that day,

was the cultural evening, where each country did a special performance which had some sort of symbolism relating to their culture. The next day was the closing ceremony and awards evening. Some contestants were awarded bronze, silver or gold for their achievements. Maths and Science were awarded separately. I was so surprised when my name was called for bronze. Everyone who got an award, got a special IMSO teddy bear as well. Those who did not receive awards received certificates of participation. What a humbling experience to be part of an international event of this scale. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly.

FROM JONATHAN WALKER:

Jonathan really enjoyed the cross cultural experience as well as participating in the Olympiad. Everyone was very friendly and the event was very well organised. The Olympiad took place over two days. The first day entailed a multiple choice questionnaire in the morning and then an essay/paragraph questionnaire in the afternoon on a wide range of topics. The team all competed individually. The science experiments/practicals (also done individually) were on the second day. The first experiment was working out voltages and wavelengths of LED lights. The second practical was classifying actual physical

PREPARING FOR THE CONTEST

Participants had no idea of what they could be asked, so it was very difficult to prepare for the competition. A teacher from Elkanah High School, James Wewege, an ex Pinehurst pupil, trained the children up over a six month period in how to prepare for IMSO. Jonathan was awarded a silver medal and obtained the highest result in the South African team. Not everyone gets a medal, but all the South African science team members qualified for medals. 4 bronze and 2 silver. The best result they have ever achieved at IMSO.

INSTANT MILLIONAIRE!

Jonathan enjoyed staying in the lovely hotels which are much cheaper than in South Africa. He got to be a millionaire too as the exchange rate is R1 to about 1600 dong. The people were very kind. They loved the South African team spirit compared to the individualistic outlook of other countries. He learnt a couple of words of Vietnamese - xin chao (hello), cam on (thank you), Nam phi (South Africa). They

Jonathan’s favourite place was Ba Na Hills, near Da Nang, especially the cable car ride up to the French Village. The cable car ride is between 6 and 7 km long past some beautiful scenery. He also enjoyed seeing the Golden Bridge. From there they took a 16 hour overnight train journey to Hanoi where the Olympiad was to be held.

Heather enjoys travelling and really enjoyed this trip. She had fun meeting children from other parts of the world and was very impressed with the all girl team from Iran. Heather was awarded a bronze medal and describes the science experiment as one

Heather loved the Golden Bridge; the local architecture and found the visit to the historical village in Da Nang (Hoi An) very interesting. She describes Vietnam as “historically rich”.

INCREASED CONFIDENCE

Heather has new found confidence after her trip to Vietnam and is far more willing to go into new situations and meet new people than before. She was brave enough at the IMSO event to pick up the microphone and as part of the South African team to express her feelings for the host country, “I think Vietnam is wonderful. The food is delicious, the people are very friendly, there are so many interesting places to see and things to do. I have really enjoyed staying here.”
