HELLO SUMMER? ARE YOU OUT THERE? Well summer just can’t seem to get started properly.... Charles Dickens, in his novel Great Expectations, had the perfect description for the delayed, halfway there season we have at the moment: “It was one of those days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade”. I know there are those that prefer the cooler months to the hot summer days... each to their own. It just feels like, this year, after a long, locked-down, covidy (is that a word yet?), cold and wet winter there is a longing for the lightness and freedom one feels in the warmth of summer when the heavy clothing and boots can finally be packed away... when we meet up outdoors, not because we ought to, but because we want to. There are many wise sayings along the lines of “Stop waiting for Friday, for summer, for your life to begin... happiness and contentment come from making the most of whatever the here and now happens to be every day”. There is certainly truth and wisdom in that sentiment, but for now, can I just say that this extended cool and wet spring is all very well, but I am now very ready for my real summer please. Of course, the way we imagine the coming weekend or summer or major life event is idealised and it rarely turns out to be perfect in the way we anticipate it. We somehow imagine that life will be gentler on us, or it will be the start of a more exciting time... perhaps like freewheeling down the hill after a long slog up to the top. We look forward to it as a final destination over the horizon, rather than the rolling season which it really is. The certainty that the next week or autumn season will inevitably follow feels too distant to care about. Well so what! A little bit of California dreaming must be good for the soul and I am looking forward to the feeling of cool grass under my feet and warm sun on my back. I hope you enjoy this edition.

Southern Boubou The Southern Boubou is a black and white bush shrike with a white wing bar and buff underparts. It is commonly found in dense bush and tangles in coastal and riverine bush, forest edge and gardens. In the top images above is a male with a full rusty colour on the underpart. In the image directly above is the female with the rusty colour on the rump only. It is more commonly heard than seen. The call is a variable duet started by the male with a whistle response from the female. Either a whooo (male) followed by a wieee (female) or a wiet-weeo (male) and a wotwot-wot (female). Both male and female make grating alarm calls. They feed mainly on insects, birds eggs, nestlings, fledgling birds and fruit. Featured bird text by: John McFarlane, local Pinewood Village resident. CELEBRATING ANN MORTON !

25 YEARS AS HEAD OF PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL Every year as Pinelands North Primary School (PNPS) celebrates their birthday, the staff with long service are recognised. This year as Head of the school Ann Morton was shown how much her hard work and bubbly personality is appreciated at the school by staff and children - past and present. Ann is also no stranger to the Muse magazine having contributed educational and travel articles over the years. Here are just a few of the highlights of Ann Morton's presentation from PNPS. FIRST FEMALE PRINCIPAL AT PNPS

This photo speaks to the inclusion, the problem-solving, encouragement and the “cheering on” that Ann and her awesome teachers weave around our children. The backstory here is that Matt (who is now 15 years old) was in grade 2. This was athletics day 2015 and, of course, Matt wanted to participate. His genetic syndrome meant that no matter how fast he ran, he would finish far behind his peers. Everyone watched and cheered as Matt ran. His fellow runners finished quickly with Matt not even half way. Spontaneously Ann decided to run alongside him so that he wasn’t running alone. He was delighted, and those that knew his story and challenges were all rather teary-eyed.

"Pinelands North Primary is celebrating its 73rd birthday this year. We have flourished under the leadership of Ann Morton who has changed the lives of staff, pupils and families by ensuring that our vision to provide an inclusive quality education, is fulfilled. Ann’s teaching career started as a grade 4 teacher at Boston Primary in 1981. Thereafter her journey continued as a grade 6 teacher at Rustenburg Girls Junior and later as deputy principal of The Pinelands Primary. She became the first female principal at PNPS in 1997. The Creative and Talented Programme is Ann’s initiative, as she is passionate about providing expanded opportunities to learn and explore. The curriculum she designed for gifted pupils focuses on thinking skills as well as social and emotional awareness. We feel blessed to work with such an amazing woman who continues to dedicate her life to making a difference in the world."

PINELANDS TEAM WINS NATIONAL ROBOTICS AWARDS A Pinelands based robotics team won 2 of the 7 awards in the nation-wide First Tech Challenge (FTC). FTC is an international robotics competition with a mission to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting challenges, where their robot competes in a timed game against other teams’ robots – like robot Olympics games. Each year the game and challenge is different. The 2021 challenge was called Ultimate Goal and teams had to design, build and program a robot to score as many points as possible by collecting rubber rings and shooting them into goals or picking up and moving mobile “wobble” goals to specific locations. The robot had to autonomously perform some functions and was driver controlled for others.

FTC is about more than the game, and aims to foster well-rounded life capabilities, including self-confidence, communication, teamwork and leadership. The Pinelands team made presentations to the judges who reviewed their design process and rationale which was documented in their Engineering Notebook. Teams had to raise funds, design and market their team brand, and do community outreach to earn awards. The team was elated to win the prized “Alliance Award” for scoring the highest number of points in the game – almost 20% more than the runner up. They also snagged the “Rockwell Collins Innovate Award” for the most innovative robot design of the season. The Pinelands-based team was started by Ethan Buckle in October 2020, focusing on people at a school where robotics is

not offered. This was possible thanks to the award of one of the six grants for new South African teams, because the parts required to get started are expensive. Five of the team members are from Pinelands - Ethan Buckle, Daniel Lugt, Steven De Villiers, Joshua Anderson and Ben Anderson. Matthew Welby-Solomon is from Rondebosch. In the next season they are aiming for a similar place on the leader board, and would like to give access to other students for FTC opportunities, in particular, those who are home schooled or in smaller and disadvantaged schools. SCIENCE FAIR AT PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOL PREPARING FOR THE JOB MARKET

More than ever, teaching our children to be curious, observant, thoughtful and critical thinkers is crucial. Similarly, given the job market, teaching them to be entrepreneurial is also important. At Pinelands High we try to teach both through an event called Science Fair.

WHAT IS SCIENCE FAIR?

Science Fair is a project that we run in Grades 9 and 11 in our science departments (these are Natural Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Life Sciences). All students have to complete an hypothesis-testing project, or a problem-solving/ engineering design project, on a topic of their choice.

RECENT EXAMPLES

Recent examples have been: analysing data sets and creating meta-data sets on school attendance (a maths project), designing and programming an automatic watering system (an IT/ computer project), doing a plant species count to see the effect of soil variables (a hypothesis-testing project), designing an innovative renewable energy collection system (an engineering project), investigating the effect on shelf life of using different amounts of salt in a bread recipe (a hypothesis-testing project), or anything else that is in any way related to our understanding of the natural world.

ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR WORLD

Students choose a topic and question by going through a brain-storming process where they have to ask questions about the world around them. We encourage students to think about things in their immediate surroundings that may be difficult or which annoy them - whether it is too many potholes in their road, litter being dumped in areas of natural beauty, cheap and effective ways to keep the lights on during load shedding, trying to prevent shack fires in winter, or figuring out which cell phone is the best to purchase for streaming when your pocket money is limited. We guide them to find workable, scalable solutions to those problems.

BROAD SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Through this process, students develop their scientific skills, through gathering, organising and analysing data, evaluating their findings, in current, real-world situations. They also develop personal skills, such as choosing between priorities, overcoming procrastination, dealing with disappointments and frustrations and pressing through to the end.

SCIENCE CAN BE FUN!!

By choosing the topic and question to investigate, students realise that science can be fun as well as relevant. In particular,

For some students, Science Fair changes their view of science so dramatically that they end up pursuing a career in science, which they might not have previously considered. We are proud of the many past-students who have gone on to study science, engineering and mathematics.

The best achievers in Science Fair are invited to represent Pinelands High School in a regional Expo competition. They compete against other schools, in age and category groups, where they are judged by teachers and experts from industry and academia. Past winners from the School have been invited to participate at national and international events.

BECOMING A WORLD CLASS INDIVIDUAL

Science Fair is about so much more than just doing a project. It develops a way of looking at the world which empowers young people. Instead of looking to others to solve their problems, or to give them the answers, Science Fair gives them the tools to be their own solution. It helps to make them truly world-class individuals, who can make a tangible difference to the world around them. 

DANCE CO ARE WINNERS! Dance Co Winning dancers: Samantha Marteze, Kim Malinowski, Hannah Banks, Emma Philipson, Kelly Smith, Jemima Desmond and Georgia Haarhof MOVE! is a National Dance Competition held at Seapoint Civic Centre each year. There have been no theatre performances for the past two years due to COVID. Dance pupils have endured a difficult period having to do dance classes through zoom - often in their bedrooms, and although online competitions are becoming the norm there is great excitement when performing live on stage! So it is a great achievement for

the Dance Co pupils to win the National Competition showing good results despite the trying times. Dance Co looks forward to their production "Memories" at the Baxter Theatre in early December and also to their Dance Tour in Italy in 2022. This annual event has also been delayed for two years. Dance is passion and Dance Co Pinelands has certainly continued in the tradition of exceptional work.

COMMUNITY NEWS WHAT ABOUT A GAP YEAR? Melanie Williams, author of The Good Gap Year Guide believes that a creatively crafted gap year will increase a young person’s competence and also confidence, inspiring them to "venture into the forest of adulthood."

A GAP YEAR CAN INCREASE CONFIDENCE

When I was teaching at Cannons Creek, I was privileged to be led by an innovative principal, Mike van Haght, who saw immense value in broadening his students' circles of confidence. The annual Adventure Week, where students spend a week to 10 days in the outdoors, is an example of this. In my Life Orientation classes, Grade 10 and 11 students were able to job shadow local NPOs, doing volunteer work and managing their own projects, raising funds and raising awareness. The school implemented a mentoring system for Grade 12 students with a teacher of their choice, throughout their whole matric year. A combination of these activities can be beneficial in assisting school leavers who have no direction.

I believe that it can be a very, very useful, transformative year, if carefully planned and maintained, but it is not a one-sizefits-all solution. Many school leavers are ready to work or study or both. Many are confident and know themselves. But many are not; and it is for them and their parents that I have written this guide. Recently, more of the young people coming to me for career guidance are in their early twenties and are already working or studying but are confused and want to drop out of their studies or change direction. Being curious about this trend, I wondered what they needed earlier in their schooling path for clarity preventing them starting courses or work that they were not suited to.

MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE GUIDE?

In designing the guide, I found that job shadowing + volunteer work + being mentored were the first puzzle pieces. The obvious components of part time studying and working or starting a small business (to earn their own money) were the next two puzzle pieces. The travel component of the Gap Year comes as a reward for putting in the other pieces. COMMUNITY NEWS Past pupil of Cannons Creek Independent School and Waterpolo Olympian encourages pupils to never give up on their dreams. "Work Hard and success will follow."

Farouk Mayman

On 23 September, Cannons Creek High School held its Certificate Awards Assembly, honouring pupils who have excelled in non-academic spheres of school. The guest speaker was Farouk Mayman, a past pupil of Cannons Creek who recently represented our country in Waterpolo at the Tokyo Olympics. Farouk began his Waterpolo career and learned the basics of the sport at Cannons.

MAKING IT INTO THE TEAM

Farouk explained that he knew he had to train harder, work harder and be smarter to make the team, competing against 63 other players. When his name was announced as part of the team, he knew the real hard work had just begun, and that he needed to make a good impression to secure a place in the team for many Olympics to come. He detailed his Olympics experience, with one of the highlights seemingly involving food - "After the tournament, I ate to my heart's desire. I had dessert for breakfast, lunch and dinner!"

Africa's future and detailed the various upcoming tournaments, stating that he firmly believes South Africa will improve its ranking. He aims to play until he is 40 years old, and then wants to give back to the sport.

Farouk reflected upon his team's performance where they lost all their games, but noted that he has so much to learn from the experience and for his career going forward. "You can only play better by playing stronger opposition," stated Farouk. He is positive about South

What happens to your retirement funds when you die? Retirement products are complex and understanding what happens to the funds in the event of death can be complicated. Here’s what happens to your retirement fund benefits when you die:

PENSION, PROVIDENT, PRESERVATION AND RETIREMENT ANNUITY FUNDS

All pre-retirement products, including pension, provident, preservation and retirement annuity funds, are regulated by the Pension Funds Act, and the distribution of these funds in the event of death is governed by Section 37C of this Act. In terms of this section, retirement fund trustees are responsible for the fair and equitable distribution of the member’s death benefits amongst his financial dependants and/or nominees, meaning that a member’s nominated beneficiaries may not necessarily receive a portion of the death benefit. This is because a member’s death benefits must be used to provide for the member’s surviving spouse, children, and other financial dependants in the event of his death. Retirement fund benefits are paid directly to the member’s beneficiaries which means that these assets fall outside of the deceased estate and are not subject to estate duty. Where a member dies before retirement age, the retirement fund trustees are required to identify and trace the member’s dependants, and to allocate the death benefit according to their respective financial needs.

LIFE ANNUITIES

A life annuity is in effect an insurance policy and, as such, comes to an end on the death of the policyholder. In general, when the annuitant dies, the insurer stops paying the monthly income and the policy effectively dies with the annuitant, leaving no capital payable into the deceased’s estate. In the case of a joint life annuity, the insurer continues to pay an annuity, or a percentage thereof, until the death of

the second spouse (or second life assured), at which point the insurer stops paying the annuity and all capital is kept by the insurer. In both instances, the value of the life annuity is excluded from the deceased estate. In the case of a fixed term life annuity where the annuitant dies before the end of the guaranteed period, the remaining annuity income will be considered deemed property in the annuitant’s deceased estate and, as such, may be estate dutiable. Generally speaking, on the death of the annuitant, the insurer will capitalise the future annuity payments and pay the amount into the deceased estate.

RETIREMENT PLANNING With less than 6% of South Africans in a position to retire comfortably, retirement planning should be a priority for all of us. The retirement funding industry can be complex to negotiate alone and ideally should be navigated with the help of an experienced retirement expert.

LIVING ANNUITIES

While living annuities are often referred to as ‘policies’, they are in fact investments held in the name of the annuitant. Living annuities issued in the name of the investor do not fall within the ambit of the Pension Funds Act and the distribution of living annuity benefits is not governed by Section 37C. This means that the owner of a living annuity can nominate the beneficiaries to his investments and in the event of his death, the funds remaining in the living annuity will be paid directly to his beneficiaries within a couple of days. Where a beneficiary has been nominated, the funds in a living annuity will bypass the deceased’s estate and will not be subject to executor’s fees. The capital invested in the living annuity will also not be subject to estate duty, unless the deceased made non-tax-deductible contributions to the retirement fund which was the source of the living annuity. The fact that the annuitant’s nominated beneficiaries are guaranteed to receive their benefit, provided they survive the annuitant, makes a living annuity a particularly attractive estate planning tool. TRAVELS COMMUNITY NEWS ACROSS THE WORLD By Judith Gordon Teacher, author and travel writer "It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end." – Ernest Hemingway Icebergs and glaciers in Iceland; a rainbow over the Iguazu Falls, South America; Australian koalas; Nazca Boobies in the Galapagos: such travel images are precious jewels. Pinelander Judith Gordon has travelled to over thirty countries, and memories which fascinate and amaze take a concrete form in her four travel books: Enchanting Iceland, Captivating Galapagos, Inspiring Australia and Incredible Argentina. Family stories As for most of us, Judith’s first stories were heard from her parents. Her naval father, William Stuart-Watson, had sailed the world, from London to Buenos Aires or from Madagascar to Tasmania, and his stories of a Nordic reindeer driver, a Chinese owner of a small floating restaurant and a jolly swagman in the Australian outback left impressions of strange and wonderful places in contrast to her mother’s more sedate descriptions of her family’s English homes in Bedford, Bath, Exeter and Oxford. Initial travels Post-World War II Cape Town provided few luxuries for the growing Stuart-Watson family, and travel was limited to voyages to Durban on the Union Castle liners. After school at Rustenburg, further study at UCT and a short stint of teaching in Komani (then Queenstown), Judith returned to Cape Town and the prospect of modest overseas holidays, having already cut her teeth on two exciting holidays in Zimbabwe. London at last! Her father’s sister, known as Auntie Margaret, met Judith and her mother, Joan, at Heathrow airport in her little red Renault Mount Tronador in the Andes

Galapagos Pinnacle Rock which she called Daphne Jane Josephine after its number plate DJJ. The drive home to Muswell Hill included passing places of legend such as Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and the Cenotaph. During thirteen years of teaching English, Latin and History at Rustenburg, Judith travelled often to visit Aunt Margaret. The East "Travel is like knowledge: the more you see, the more you know you haven’t seen." - Mark Hertsgaard One tour of six weeks is the only time Judith has spent in the Far East, visiting Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand and Israel, finding them a pot pourri of impressions exotic, thrilling and mysterious. Being lost in a Tokyo underground mall and unable to read the Japanese signs was, however, an experience never to be repeated. Africa Judith was appointed Head of Clarendon Girls’ High School, East London, a position she held for eleven happy and fulfilled years, some with Alf Turner as Head of the Primary School. Alf later became Head of Pinehurst: he and his wife, Pam, now live in The Orchards near the Gordons. It was a busy life as Head, but Judith managed comfortable times with Auntie Margaret as well as some exciting forays into Namibia, Malawi and KwaZulu Natal, including walks in the Drakensberg. More of the world After her return to Cape Town, marriage to Tim Gordon and a brief stay in Pretoria, Judith put her skills to use by writing school textbooks and learning to edit while exercising her first love, teaching, at Rustenburg, part-time. More extensive travels beckoned, and an invitation from a

Dancers in Peru school friend resulted in a fortnight in Qatar and four days in Dubai, her introduction to the Arab world. Australia Tim and Judith travelled twice to Australia to be with family, first in Sydney and Townsville (between Cairns and Brisbane), and then in Adelaide, Melbourne and Tasmania which had featured in her childhood stories as being a place of green retreat when the world was really miserable and unyielding. Iceland A chance meeting at the Royal Festival Hall in London with teacher Joyce Bowles included a vivid description of her recent visit to Iceland, which prompted Judith to take a tour of that over-awing land of glaciers, trolls, bubbling boiling sulphur springs and smoke-spewing volcanoes. South America Two friends included Judith in a trip to South America, vibrant and magical weeks in Cusco and Machu Picchu in Peru, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and the unforgettable, spectacular Iguazu Falls. Four more trips entrenched Judith’s intense and somewhat unexpected love for South America, expressed in Captivating Galapagos and Incredible Argentina. Judith has discovered the enjoyment of writing about her travels and illustrating them with her own photographs, each book beautifully designed by Karen Lilje of Hybrid Creative.
