WHAT AWAITS US OVER THE HORIZON Well, here we stand at the end of another year... To us, it feels like it has been a short, intense year which we spent climbing up a steep hillside to get out of the deep gully we fell into in 2020. Are we close enough to the horizon to see something more like our “normal” life? Only time will tell whether it is a false horizon with another hillside to scale or perhaps a flatter path to truly get out of the valley and back on life’s highway. We have recently been re-watching an earlier Star Trek series... not with the same bingewatching fervour of the first lockdown, but in smaller recreational bites. Fellow Trekkies will recall Captain Picard’s signature line: “Make it so” in response to a suggestion from one of his crew when faced with a crisis or difficult situation. We have all probably had many “make it so” moments ourselves over the past 21 months, when we have had to come up with unusual solutions to unusual situations at short notice. While all this improvisation does without doubt slowly sap the energy out of you, we hope it does leave behind some new life skills and a measure of confidence in ourselves to handle new confronting challenges. Speaking of appreciating the gift of a confronting situation, the words of Neil Armstrong, the first man to stand on the moon, watching the Earth rise above the lunar horizon are sublime: “It’s a brilliant surface in that sunlight. The horizon seems quite close to you because the curvature is so much more pronounced than here on earth. It’s an interesting place to be. I recommend it.” Now that is a lesson on putting anxiety and stress aside to rather appreciate the wonder of what the novel situation has to offer. On a final sci-fi indulgence – When you “Engage!” your engines for the New Year, may they speed you away to better times in a alternate galaxy far, far away, unplagued by anything Coronial. I realise that this is a somewhat fanciful notion, but hey... good sci-fi should make you feel good about the future you want to imagine, and we all need a bit of that now. We hope you enjoy this edition. We are taking our annual break now so the next edition of the Muse will only be published on 1 February 2022. Wherever you are spending your year-end break, be it at home or on that long-awaited trip, we wish you well. May it be as peaceful or as exciting as you want it to be.

African Wood Owl Not found in suburbia this owl can be located on the slopes of Table Mountain in the Constantia Nek area. More often heard than seen, the call is a hooting hu hu, hu whoo-oo. The calls are regularly in duet with the female with the higher pitched voice calling first. The Wood Owl does not have the ear tufts common to other owls in this area. It is medium sized, chocolate brown, with a round head, dark brown eyes, and a yellow bill. The facial disk is finely barred and paler than the white-spotted brown head. The belly is barred brown and white.

Message from Mr Harold Winearls, Chair of the Management Committee: The advent of Pinewood Village began in May 1994 with the first houses being occupied on part of the old University of Cape Town sports fields. A year later, the village was able to open what today is the large Community Centre complex. The need for a receptionist to cater to enquiries from prospective residents and to handle day to day matters from the residents subsequently arose. Yvonne Ellis joined the team in 1995 and now, 26 years, later Yvonne is leaving the village for a well-deserved retirement. Yvonne has mastered the new technology of the computer age and with her excellent memory can always be relied on to remember the families of old residents who have long gone and who now form part of the next generation of residents. As General Manager for over 20 years, I could always rely on Yvonne

to assist with the hundreds of enquiries we handled daily. One of Yvonne's great talents is that of a superb florist. Many wedding anniversaries, birthday parties and (sadly) hosted memorial services were graced with Yvonne’s magnificent floral arrangements to brighten these large functions. A fond memory was the occasion of the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton. A wedding luncheon was arranged, the residents dressed up and we all watched the service on TV with our Community Centre decked out with wedding bunting and huge colourful floral arrangements done by Yvonne, it was a day to remember! The village will miss Yvonne's patience and helpful ways as she ends her journey at Pinewood Village after so many years. Thank you, dear Yvonne, from all past and present residents. Message by Chantel Balladon, Assistant Accountant: I joined the Pinewood Village team in August 2020 after re-locating from Pretoria. Yvonne made me feel right at home as I eased into my new environment. The past year and a half with Yvonne have been unbelievably memorable. As a team, we have had heaps of fun whilst doing our utmost to uphold the Pinewood Village ethos. A heart of gold and a solid receptionist at Pinewood Village, Yvonne will certainly be missed by her peers, the residents, the residents’ family members and suppliers alike. Yvonne, as you venture onto the open highway of retirement, may you be proud of the work you have done, the person that you are and the difference you have made at Pinewood Village.

Happy Birthday Millicent Gardiner Millicent Gardiner, Pinewood Village resident for over 20 years, really lived up to her name on her 105th birthday on Saturday 16th October 2021. Her daughter Jean explains: "Millicent can mean strong woman or a sweet singer; Hester can refer to a star." Magnificent Millicent's family gathered midmorning in the Knotty Pine Millicent Gardiner with Coffee Bar at Pinewood Village to celebrate Greatgranddaughter Tara. her auspicious 105th birthday. Her two daughters were there, two sons-in-law, her two granddaughters and ten year old Tara, the youngest of five Greatgrandchildren. Every year comes with a rhyme about her age: this year Millicent announced "I'm 105 and STILL alive!" WHERE HAVE ALL THE ‘ARTISTS’ GONE? Brendan Carroll Principal, Pinehurst Primary School

“He who works with his hands is a labourer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands, his head, and his heart is an artist.” St Francis of Assisi. During my high school years, we had two consecutive evenings of career presentations. Different people came and did talks on the work they spent their days doing. There were doctors, accountants, lawyers, teachers, engineers and other professionals. The ‘funky’ choices you could make would include archaeology or marine biology. All were graduates. The thing which struck me was that there were no musicians, artists, dancers or actors. Equally there were no plumbers, cabinet makers or electricians.

Is there a "better" career?

The underlying message was clearly that to be someone worth something, you needed a degree and preferably not get your hands dirty. More and more, mechanization has become the norm. Products made by thoughtful, creative artisans and artists

have been replaced by mass produced goods resulting in items which are inferior in quality and boring.

The importance of creativity

“Don’t consider studying the arts, rather get a ‘real’ job and do that as a hobby.” This is the advice which adolescents are frequently given when planning their futures. I do realize that there is a financial reality at play and the need to make a living, but this fact is again a reflection of the lack of value which our society places on creative beauty. Are we in this place because we don’t feel that we have the time to spend being creative? Creativity after all requires spaciousness and time. We want instant things and don’t value or recognize beauty or the meaning which it adds to our existence. Life is so outcomesorientated and we are losing the fun of the journey whilst chasing some end goal which inevitably disappoints (or kills us with the stress of trying to get there).

Enjoy the journey

The natural world operates in seasons and cycles. It is rich in creativity, connectivity and playfulness without actually going anywhere in particular. There is no destination. Humans are captivated and driven by destinations and travelling to get somewhere which is the ‘end point’ towards which all our energy and time is focussed. Imagine if dancers and musicians performed purely or primarily to get to the end of their performance. The music or dance would be meaningless and the

audience could arrive to watch the finale. But the creative arts aren’t like that, the point of the dance is the dance and the beauty of the expressive journey. Likewise, a musical composition isn’t all about trying to ‘get to the end’.

What is success?

Our education system has a starting point and follows a pre-determined route to an all-important exit point which children spend twelve years aiming towards. University follows until we are ready to join the big wide world. The task now is to achieve success which is typically defined by promotions, meeting targets or quotas and increasingly large pay cheques. We are on a journey – but what is the end?

Exhausted by retirement age

In our 40’s we hit mid-life look around (often exhausted) and think that we must have made it. Alas, we discover that this is not it. Depression or a crisis can follow. By now we are too deep in to stop and must work towards retirement so that our life can actually start and we have enough time to do the things that we’ve always wanted to do. We drive home from our retirement party like an expired Duracell Bunny feeling that we’ve really cheated ourselves all the way along the journey towards this not so magical destination.

Smell the roses

I am challenged not to miss the point all the way along the journey. Life is a beautiful journey and we are supposed to sing and dance whilst the music is playing. 

COMMUNITY NEWS PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL STAFF LONG SERVICE AWARDS 2021

Every year, the school’s birthday in October is also a cause for celebration of the staff who have contributed to the wellbeing of the school for over five years. This year brought a bumper crop of staff who have faithfully given uninterrupted service. Eleven staff were awarded five-year certificates: the largest number ever! Ann Morton, the principal, was featured in our previous Muse, as she has been the leader of the school for twenty-five years. Deputy Principal, Shereen Stadler, arrived from Portia Primary fifteen years ago as a Head of Department and grade 4 teacher. Over the years, she has become Principal Ann Morton’s right hand ‘man’, and ably manages the school in her absence. Although no longer a class teacher, Shereen’s most exciting part of her day is teaching ‘her’ grade 7 pupils Mathematics first thing every morning. She also loves teaching ‘sustainable skills’ for a life after school. Woodwork, knitting, embroidery and technology are all part of her repertoire; providing children hobbies to enjoy as adults or entrepreneurial skills to create items to make an income.

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AT PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOL By Ryan de Roo | PHS Professional Development Coordinator Pinelands High School staff have recently been enjoying a meaningful teacher recharge as we continued our long-established Professional Growth workshops. Our sessions focused on how we encourage meaningful learning and engagement given current circumstances in the context of Covid-19. Five of our experienced teaching staff ran interactive sessions that focused on re-engaging our students. These covered: • The child behind the mask - putting ourselves into our students’ shoes • Experience and skills on getting to know juniors and managing junior classes • Getting students to tune back in through collaborative learning strategies that encourage interaction and learning • Lessons from Google Classroom (an online platform for student learning) • Ways to cope in an ever-changing classroom landscape As always, the aim of our professional growth is to change teacher behaviour

and in so doing to improve our student’s learning experience. Even during the time of the pandemic our weekly professional development sessions continued. Throughout this year, facilitators have been a mixture of external experts and our own teachers. DIETER ROOSEBOOM PINELANDER OF THE YEAR The 2021 Pinelander of the Year shield was awarded to Dieter Rooseboom for outstanding community service and his dedicated commitment and contribution to the Pinelands Heritage Advisory Committee (HAC) and Heritage Protection Overlay Zone (HPOZ) from 2014 – 2021. Dieter passed away unexpectedly and tragically on 1 September 2021 after a fall from his roof. The excitement of recognising and acknowledging his contribution to Pinelands comes with extreme sadness that he is not here to receive the award himself. TIRELESS WORK WITH THE HAC

LONG TIME PINELANDER

Dieter has had connections to Pinelands for nearly 60 years, having met a pretty young Pinelands girl whom he later married. Together they bought a home and moved into Pinelands in 1978. Maybe it wasn’t coincidence that their home was in the area that was later declared the Heritage Protection Overlay Zone (HPOZ) thanks to many years of work by Brian Watkyns.

HERITAGE PROTECTION

The Heritage Advisory Committee (HAC) was formed in 2014 after the outcry about the demolition and unapproved “out of character” building at 24 Forest Drive. It was clearly visible on Forest Drive in the HPOZ and across the road from Mead Way, a Provincial Heritage Site. Other suburbs had similar committees and so with the help of Heritage Consultant Chris Snelling the Pinelands HAC was formed comprising heritage architects, a landscape architect, a civil engineer and the Pinelands Ratepayers and Residents Association (PRRA) secretary.

Dieter was a professional Civil Engineer and worked for companies like Kantey and Templer Consulting Engineers. After his official retirement he continued to oversee smaller projects on site. At work Dieter was known, amongst other attributes, for his impeccable integrity and his attention to detail and for doing a job well. Dieter brought these same skills into his voluntary work on the HAC. He had an incredible memory for the plans examined by the HAC and exactly what had been approved. He could compare this to what was happening onsite. He easily spotted the inconsistencies or unapproved building. He also noticed building taking place that the PRRA hadn’t commented on and which was bypassing the HAC system.

ENGAGING WITH ALL STAKE HOLDERS

He would engage with the builders or architects and others if needed; he fetched plans from the Sub Council and did site visits of most plans submitted to HAC; he kept his eye on trees on sites; he helped check plans and comment. He went to estate agents to inform them of the HPOZ as they were often the first people that potential new HPOZ homeowners met with and therefore should be part of the HPOZ education.

SUPPORTING THE PRRA

As the “eyes on the ground” Dieter became a custodian of the HPOZ protecting its

consistency and integrity. He went the extra mile for HAC. He regularly called to update the PRRA on what he had seen and the status of plans. His thoughtfulness extended to making copies of maps and laminating them for the rest of the team. He jokingly referred to his wife Philippa as his secretary as she typed up all the email comments - so she was also a part of the PRRA HAC team!

HIGHLIGHTING THE HPOZ

One of Dieter's ideas was to have sign boards put up at the main roads that lead into the HPOZ so that people would be more aware of it and that they were buying and living in the HPOZ.

The Shields commemorating the award were presented to Philippa, Dieter's teammate of nearly 50 years, and to their son Anton, as a sign of the huge appreciation for all that Dieter did in these seven years for Pinelands and for the HPOZ. We thank Philippa for all her help with the emails and comments “behind the scenes” and her support during the time that Dieter worked with the HAC over the years. We miss him hugely on the team and our hearts are with you, Anton and your family at this tragic time of loss. 

We all know that a dementia diagnosis can wreak havoc on the family of the sufferer. Over and above the emotional and psychological burden of caring for a loved one who suffers from the disease, the financial burden – which extends far beyond the cost of medical care – can be difficult to bear. Dementia is a broad term used to describe various brain disorders that affect one’s ability to conduct activities of daily living independently. Besides memory and decision-making, dementia also affects behaviour, language, motor skills and the ability to recognize people, things, and places. Depending on the type of dementia, life expectancy can range from 5 years to 15 years from the time of diagnosis; and in the final stages of the disease, most dementia sufferers will require full-time care in terms of bathing, dressing, and feeding. While there are many forms of dementia, such as vascular dementia and fronttemporal dementia, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form and accounts for between 70% and 80% of dementia cases. Although there is a dearth of data in South Africa, it is estimated that about 6% of those over the age of 65 have the disease, which is in line with the rest of the world – and the risk of suffering from dementia increases with age. Medical aids generally provide little in the way of cover for dementia. While ‘treatable dementia’ is listed as a Prescribed Minimum Benefit, schemes are only required to cover admission for the initial diagnosis and management of acute psychotic symptoms for one week. Unless you’re on a fully comprehensive medical aid, most medical schemes do not provide cover for home nursing – and the plan options that do are expensive and provide limited benefits. However, with very few South Africans in a position to retire comfortably, the reality is that where a retiree is diagnosed with dementia, the financial burden often falls to the immediate family of that person – and the economic costs are difficult to quantify. Home nursing can cost anywhere between R8 000 and R25 000 per month depending on the level of care required. Dementia care is a specialist field of nursing which, in most

instances, is required in the more advanced stages of the disease. While there are plenty of retirement villages that provide frail care and assisted living facilities, there are very few that provide specialised dementia care – and those that do come at a price. A dementia care facility can cost anywhere from R25 000 per month to R75 000 per month on the top end – a cost that is unaffordable to most South Africans. Where someone has an early dementia diagnosis, setting up a Special Trust Type A to house the assets of the patient is a useful option for managing their financial affairs. Another option is to bring an application to the High Court of the appointment of a curator bonis. This can cost anywhere between R50 000 and R100 000. A more affordable option is provided in terms of the Mental Health Care Act which allows a person to apply to the Master of the High Court for an administrator to manage the affairs of a dementia sufferer. This process is fairly simple and can cost anywhere between R5 000 and R20 000 depending on whether you use an attorney for the application. Where a person has been diagnosed with dementia but still has mental acuity, it is advisable to ensure that they check and update their Will because, as the disease progresses and their mental capacity declines, it will not be legally possible to do so. The costs of having a Will drafted range from R500 to R5 000 depending on the complexity, so ideally employ an expert to draft this all-important document. At the same time, the dementia patient might also want to consider drafting a Living Will and/ or an Advance Healthcare Directive, which are very useful end-of-life documents providing guidance to loved ones, doctors, and carers on how they wish to be cared for medically once they become mentally incapacitated. The longer we live, the greater the chance we have of being diagnosed with the disease. As a result, everyone’s retirement plan should include a ‘what if’ dementia scenario ensuring no unnecessary financial burden is placed on those around us. VERMONT SALT PAN AND THE VERMONT - ONRUS COASTAL PATH One might imagine a dry dusty bowl with the wind blowing across it to be the natural vista across a salt pan. The Vermont salt pan in Rockhopper Street, is bordered by reed covered wetlands and depends on ground water levels that are high after the heavy rains this year. It is currently a small lake home to many birds and is visited by flamingoes when they come in their winter breeding season. There is a walkway along one side of the pan that can be enjoyed by all except the walk is currently interrupted by a flooded path in places. Vermont is a village situated between the Hoek-vandie-berg private nature reserve and Onrus, near Hermanus. The Onrus Mountain provides a magnificent backdrop and is probably where the name Vermont comes from - "green mountain". Approximately 20% of Vermont is dedicated to a number of green belts running from the mountain to the coast in an effort to protect endemic fynbos and birdlife. Along the coastline is the Vermont trail with well maintained

walking paths along beautiful sea views, rock and tidal pools. The popular trail continues along the Onrus coastline to a couple of our favourite pitstops. One is at Jan Rabie Pool - the perfect place to watch the sun go down; the other is the coffee caravan at Davie's pool. This is a grassed play area between the Onrus caravan Park and a tidal pool. There are clean toilet facilities and tables with umbrellas where one can rest with a delicious cappuccino or coffee milkshake and fresh brownie from Coffee @ Davie's Pool. Continuing along the coastal path which is also known as the VOS cliff path walk (connecting Vermont, Onrus and Sandbaai) you will eventually reach the Onrus lagoon as it flows into the sea. This is a popular surfing beach and children love swimming in the lagoon. You can stop in at the Milkwood Reastaurant - their decks overlook the beach and lagoon. It is a dog friendly establishment serving full meals and tasty snacks. Alternatively there is an ice-cream van for that Choc '99 experience as you head back to your car. If you are travelling to Hermanus, why not take some time to stop in Vermont for a fresh sea air walk, bird watching at the salt pan or some peace and tranquillity at Davie's pool - you can find it on google maps.
