AS THE SAYING GOES...

When choosing a course of action, we often resort to wise old sayings for guidance. But wait, for every saying, there is usually another which advises exactly the opposite. When faced with an opportunity, should we grab it now or wait for something better? "Good things come to those who wait" versus " Fortune favours the bold, but abandons the timid" — which one should we go with? I suspect that we subconsciously make our decision anyway and choose the saying which supports it to reassure ourselves and justify it to others. As much as it is good to apply reason to a decision, I think a well honed-intuition is worth more than a decision flow chart when choosing the option which will serve us best. In the later stages of COVID lockdown, the idea of measured risk was useful for me. In the early days, without vaccines and good understanding of effective treatments, the high risk called for more caution, while later on, the lower risk afforded more room for returning to a measure of income repair and much needed socializing. I also see this idea of measured risk in a card game our family played called Klaberjass – a much simpler, 'skelm' version of Bridge where you have to call a contract before all the cards are dealt. In contrast to the many conventions and systems of Bridge, this game is high-risk, hit-and-run. Always playing to either extreme of caution or impulsiveness will guarantee losing for you. Some sensible play to your hand's strength, taking some chances and a bit of good luck is needed to win. So, are wise old sayings useless in helping you make the right choice? Perhaps we need a more detailed saying with ifs and buts to cover the options? Well, then a useful saying might be more accurate, but would just lack the clarity and oomph of a simple black and white 'truth'. Carpe diem! (Seize the day!) is often quoted as it has a certain authoritative and urgent ring to it, but I found out that this is missing the crucial second half which really makes it useful as well. It is down to an ancient Roman called Quintus Horatius Flaccus ("just call me Horace"). He was variously a soldier, financial clerk, poet and senator so he was well placed to understand risk, urgency, caution and responsibility. His well polished gem, without an if nor a but, was: "Seize the day, and put the least possible trust in tomorrow. Begin, be bold and venture to be wise". Now this is the kind of advice I can use - It offers me a noble path, doesn't pretend to know which option is best for me and reminds me to apply my mind while following my heart.

African Hoopoe The African Hoopoe is about the size of a laughing dove, with a long de-curved bill. It has a cinnamon coloured body and black and white wings and tail. It also has a long black-tipped crest that is raised when alarmed. The female is slightly duller than the male, with face and breast brushed grey. The call is hoop-oop-oop or hoopoop. They nest in natural holes in the ground, termite mounds, or hollow trees. The nest is foul-smelling after the chicks hatch. This is thought to deter predators and insects. Article by: Haley Holton Learning Support Co-ordinator Pinelands North Primary School The Red School Our school is recognised for excellence in our inclusive approach to learning, with a model that ensures that teachers and teacher aides, in collaboration with various specialists, help all children to learn more effectively. We believe that by including children and adults that are different, we all learn more. As the circle of inclusion has grown over the years, so too has our Learning Support Department, growing to meet the needs of the school community. The “US” is about our children. Along with an inclusive approach to learning, the school celebrates diversity in education by recognising each child’s potential, removing stigmas and negative labels. In my thirteen years as part of the

PNPS staff, the school has constantly changed to adapt to the requirements of each child who enters the school to learn. The “US” is up to our Staff. I am currently employed as the Learning Support Department Co-ordinator and my team includes a Learning Support Teacher, Learning Support Teacher intern, Learning Support Administrator and Community Support member. All of "US" work together to learn, teach, grow, share and support the families, children, staff and community in the Inclusion Journey. The “US” is supported by our Therapists. PROFESSOR ED RYBICKI

Our characterful Pinelander has many strings to his bow and began his illustrious career at UCT in 1981 as a virology lecturer. He became Professor of Microbiology in 2003 and established the Biopharming Research Unit (BRU) in 2013. In 2019 he was named UCT's most prolific inventor for vaccine related inventions and more recently for successes in the field of Biopharming - using plants to produce pharmaceuticals. Professor Rybicki enjoys science fiction, rock music, photography and wearing uniquely designed ... loud T-shirts! Born in Zambia with education in Zambia, Zimbabwe and the UK what brought you to South Africa? The Zambian University didn’t do the subjects I wanted so I came to university in South Africa on a bursary from a trust at my old school (St George’s College, Harare). As well as being a founder member of the UCT Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IIDMM), and a member of the SA-MRC-UCT Gynaecological Cancer Research Centre, you are the Director of the Biopharming Research Unit (BRU) in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. What is Biopharming? Biopharming is the making of high-value, mostly protein-based, pharmaceuticals or reagents in a variety of cell-based production systems. It is mainly used for making complex molecules that cannot be synthesised chemically. We do it mostly in plants in the BRU, and call it molecular farming! What inspires your inventions? Our inventions are largely vaccine-related, and mostly to do with production of candidate vaccines for pathogens like human papillomavirus, HIV, influenza,

and several animal viruses, and lately, improving the ability of plants to make virus vaccines. Filing patents logically follows from working in biotechnology, and vaccine-related biotechnology in my case. If you don’t patent inventions, you can’t protect them, and no-one will want to buy the rights or make the product. It helps that we in the BRU have actually derived personal as well as research group income from our patent portfolio from licencing of the intellectual property we have generated. We may also be on the verge of getting a couple of our vaccines into animals as commercial products, having been particularly successful recently with vaccines aimed at African horse sickness and beak and feather disease virus of parrots, for example. How has biopharming been used during the Covid pandemic? Molecular farming has been used to make reagents for use in locally-produced test kits for SARS-CoV-2 by a company that was recently spun out of UCT, based on our expertise in the BRU, called Cape Bio Pharms. They are based in premises at Ndabeni Circle, in fact, so are almost in Pinelands. We made a candidate subunit vaccine in plants for SARS-CoV-2 based on a soluble version of the virus S protein, sadly unsupported by any local funding. The potential for this technology is underlined by the fact that Medicago Inc. from Canada

– a company with whom we worked and were funded by for several years - have recently announced licencing in Canada of a plant-made SARS2 vaccine, and plan to release a quadrivalent influenza vaccine (ie effective against 4 strains of flu virus), based on the same technology very soon. How do you integrate your work and many hobbies? I have quite wide interests in science in general, including my particular specialist field, that were engendered by my voracious reading of New Scientist and Scientific American when I was in Harare. I am also a lifelong fan of science fiction, psychedelic rock music, and photography – all of which has actually fed into my use of initially multimedia and now the Web for informing specialist and generalist audiences about Virology (see google Scoop.it Virology News and Viroblogy, and @ BRULabUCT on Twitter). It helps that I read REALLY fast, and retain much of what I see and read. How would you encourage readers to have a successfully balanced lifestyle? As for a balanced lifestyle, I can only suggest that people do what they love, at work and at home. Right now for me, that includes revising a Virology textbook, trying to leverage COVID isolation by learning to play electric guitar – and going to look at flowers in Namaqualand, and scenery in the Richtersveld. 

THEATRE CRAFT HAS FUN AT FROGGY POND

Honouring mothers Pinehurst Primary School participated in another successful Mother’s Day cupcake donation drive where cupcakes were donated to the “Make a Mom Smile” Mother’s Day Initiative. The aim was to collect 10 000 cupcakes for moms throughout the Western Cape, allowing them to feel special and acknowledged. Each grade brought cupcakes, icing, and decorations. They had fun icing and decorating their own cupcake that would be donated to a special recipient. Many residents in old age homes were remembered and celebrated. Pinehurst donated 420 cupcakes lovingly made by boys and girls with great imagination and creativity. A project that they hope will continue to grow and for Pinehurst to remain a participant.

The Theatrecraft Drama group, run by Paula and Jonathan Pursch was very excited when the day finally arrived for their longawaited drama camp. Over 40 drama pupils from Grade 5-7 at Pinehurst Primary School (assisted by a dozen camp 'parents') left for

The Cape Times Fresh Air camp at Froggy Pond on 7th May. The children enjoyed drama games like Froggy Pond's got Talent and a Theatresports challenge as well as a game of wooden frog-racing after a Saturday night braai! But the highlight was the creation of a play with the costumes, props and set all being made from the contents of a box of junk... cardboard, material and vinyl scraps, egg cartons, broomsticks etc. There were prizes for everyone and they were supported by many of the parents who drove out to watch their creative performances! Given the dire warnings in the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report 2022 which tells us we have a tiny window to avert catastrophic climate change, members from Extinction Rebellion (XR) held what looked like road safety signs, but were in fact warning signs, calling all to move away from fossil fuels. Flyers were handed out inviting the public to join the growing group of ordinary people who are deeply worried about the devastating impacts that the climate crisis is already having on vulnerable communities and will soon have on all. “I was greeted with warmth and appreciation by the morning commuters. I imagined that the many parents who were in cars with their children had meaningful conversations after encountering us at the robots and that made me happy. It was scary to make myself so visible and vulnerable to strangers, but it was worth it.” Says Leigh Meinert from Rosebank. Pinelands resident Astrid Hadley reflects: “Seeing so many people standing in solidarity against climate change gave me hope that we can make a difference to stop the destruction of our precious planet." Inge Badenhorst, aged 11, really appreciated it when the drivers acknowledged the cause. Jaime Hill, aged 11, already sees her role in history “I don’t want the children of the future to blame their ancestors for making a mess of the world God has created. We will be those ancestors.” Toby Hadley, aged 11, has already invited his peers to join him: “I was so inspired I started my Eco-FriendlySquad at school where a group of us are going to join XR, do our own team talks, clean up canals and do all sorts of things. I hope to make the planet a better place.” Heather Hill, Pinelands resident, describes the emotions “I felt a mixture of feelings while standing at the side of the road feelings of gratitude for an opportunity to try and make more people aware that our lifestyle choices are going to destroy us. Feelings of urgency to get the message out there. And feelings of sadness and introspection as I realised how complicit I still am in our climate crisis, despite efforts to care for our Mother Earth. We all need to make changes if we want to save her and make those changes now.” Natasha Slabbert, Pinelands resident, finds hope in standing with others “Joining in on the protest was both cathartic and exhilarating. Being able to take a stand, be seen, and feel like I was taking action was an invaluable experience. It motivated and soothed me. I feel like there is now hope.”

What is Extinction Rebellion? Extinction Rebellion is an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse. XR has three demands: • The first is to TELL THE TRUTH which is that we are facing an unprecedented global emergency. All institutions must communicate the danger we are in. • The second is ACT NOW. Every part of society must act now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025 and begin protecting and repairing nature. The whole of society must move into a new precautionary paradigm, where life is sacred, and all are in service ensuring its future.

• The third is BE THE CHANGE. We demand a culture of participation, fairness, and transparency. The Government must create and be led by a Citizens’ Assembly on Climate and Ecological Justice. Only the common sense of ordinary people will help us navigate the challenging decisions ahead. How can you be the change? We need to respond to the urgent "call to action" from the IPCC that tells us that in order to avert climate disaster we need to peak our global greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, and sharply reduce them by 43% by 2030. Yes, individual households need to make changes to reduce their energy usage (installing renewables, doing an energy audit to see where they can save energy),

eat less meat, use non-motorised vehicles or carpool, repair instead of buying new, or buy 2nd hand or local, compost food waste, and support initiatives that restore the natural world. The Educational Triangle Educating a child is a team effort and all three members of the team, child, parent and teacher, need to play their part. When education is truly child-centred, the child occupies the apex of the triangle and the parent and teacher together provide the base. Each player occupying a corner of the triangle has a vital role to play. The triangle analogy works well here because a triangle is a stable structure taking on many forms and sizes necessary to suit the needs of each child. How does the child hold up his or her corner? The child needs to attend school every day; working hard, be it in class or at home; doing homework, assignments or preparing for exams; behaving appropriately and showing respect for peers and teachers. The parent corner is indispensable. The parents provide a stable home providing food, shelter, clothing, school materials, security and emotional support for the child. No matter how poor the home is, it is important to be filled with love, parent presence and stability. It is also at home where the child should learn about respect, honesty, tolerance and manners

(by imitating the parents). If you’re not prepared to take on these responsibilities, you shouldn’t become a parent.

The teacher corner is represented by the school and teachers. They need to ensure that the school environment is conducive to good teaching and learning with enough safe clean space, light, seating and work surfaces. Teachers need to be present, punctual, properly qualified, motivated and prepared every day for every lesson with love for their subjects and care for their pupils. Teachers need to go the extra mile and be good role models, understanding that the profession requires a lot more than any job description can detail. Teachers need to understand that they don’t get paid overtime. If you don’t enjoy teaching - don’t!

What happens when a corner of the triangle fails? • When pupils don’t do what they are supposed to do, fingers are regularly pointed at the teacher. Often the teacher is blamed for the child having failed when the reality is that the child simply did not study. • If teachers do not teach properly or are seldom at school, then pupils are forced to try to teach themselves or parents have to step in. • When parents don’t teach their children basic manners and good behaviour, teachers are expected to take on the parenting role. Clearly this is not how the system is meant to work. • Another problem is when role players deliberately choose not to stay in their corner. When this happens the education triangle becomes an education tangle. • When high school teachers feel they need to “baby” their pupils, for example by spoon feeding or sending pupils

reminders of their homework for the next day, we’re crossing into their corner and, in so doing, we deny the pupil the opportunity of learning responsibility. • When parents cross into the teacher corner by telling the teacher how to teach or criticise their child’s teachers in front of their child or deny teachers the right to discipline their child, it’s simply a matter of time before the child also tries to take over from the teacher. • When parents do their child’s projects for them, or bring their lunch boxes to school because their child left it at home, they’re crossing into the child’s corner and, before you know it, you will be asking yourself what more you could have done when your child brings home a poor report card. The system is not infallible. Of course parents cover for teachers and help their children with schoolwork - that’s good and necessary, provided the balance is healthy. Similarly, I’m not saying that schools can’t parent or instil morals - that’s an important part of what we do at school but surely we, as parents, can’t be comfortable totally abdicating our parenting role to the schools. When problems arise with the education triangle, it’s often because the base is unstable. Parents and teachers need to work together to support the child’s education. When that happens, the child is then able and equipped to do their bit and the end result is a child who flourishes at school. 

CANNONS CREEK CELEBRATES WORLD BOOK DAY In honour of World Book Day on 23 April, Cannons Creek Primary School encouraged its pupils to dress up as a book character. The school held a parade where all the pupils (and staff) could showcase their outfits. JOSHUA BEERWINKEL IN AMERICA

The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program was introduced by the American Congress in response to the events of September 2011, to support the opportunity for students to live and study in another country. The student and host family learn about and develop an understanding of each other's cultures and way of life. Joshua - how did you become a youth ambassador for South Africa? The Kennedy Lugar Youth Exchange Programme was announced during a school assembly at Pinelands High School, so I decided I would get the application and just give it a shot. There is a selection process involving multiple interviews before being granted the scholarship to become an exchange student. After being accepted I travelled in August 2021 to my host family in Herriman, Utah. It's a town near Salt Lake City. I return to Pinelands on the 8th June after nine months in the States. Tell us about your school in Utah I attend Providence Hall High School, where all school work is done on chromebooks and students only need an exam pad for the

odd hard copy assignment. Teenagers in America seem to have more freedom. Many are able to secure part-time employment, they drive their own cars and are treated more like adults than children. I feel this also makes them more independent. Everybody in the community where I live is so close and trusting of each other. They appear more inclined to trust strangers. Describe some highlights of your visit About a month into my stay I finally felt like I wasn't just a visitor when attending a high school football game at the stadium. I had so much fun making friends in the stands and I remember feeling so part of school and its football culture. I also visited Utah State Capitol which is one of Utah’s most prominent landmarks and was impressed by the sheer size of the building. What have you learnt about yourself? I need to be more willing to take risks. I learnt that because I was afraid of what

Now I have created memories from opportunities that I usually would not have taken. What recommendations would you make for those also wishing to partake in an exchange program? Just do it! Don't be afraid about whether or not you think you will get in or how you are going to live without friends and family because I guarantee everything is worth it. I could never put a price on this experience, the people I have met and the memories I have made are irreplaceable. I believe everybody should try to get this amazing opportunity. 

Final account: Determining your estate duty liability Determining the estate duty liability in your estate is a critical part of the planning process, allowing the estate planner to address any shortfalls that may exist. Estate duty, which is levied in terms of the Estate Duty Act, is payable at a flat rate of 20% on the net value of a deceased estate up to R30 million. If the net value exceeds R30 million, a flat rate of 25% is levied. In order to determine your estate duty liability, you will need to calculate the value of all your property and subtract the allowable deductions and expenses to arrive at a net estate value which, depending on the value, may be subject to estate duty. That said, understanding what assets fall within the definition of property, and what deductions are allowable, is key to determining your estate’s net value. Calculating your property value In terms of Section 3(2) of the Act, estate duty is calculated on the value of all your property, and this includes movable and immoveable property, as well as corporeal and incorporeal property. While corporeal property refers to physical, tangible property such as a vehicle or a home, incorporeal property includes nontangible rights such as servitudes and leaves over immoveable property. If you are an ordinary resident of South Africa, property refers to your worldwide assets. Inclusion of Deemed Property Deemed property refers to assets which come into fruition in the event of your death, such as life insurance policies or pension pay outs. It is important to note: • Deemed property includes the proceeds of domestic insurance policies taken out on your life. Keep in mind that if the proceeds are payable to your spouse in terms of a registered ante-nuptial contract they are excluded for estate duty purposes. • Any benefits payable by an approved retirement fund, including pension, provident, preservation and retirement annuity funds as a result of your death are not considered deemed property. • If you are married with the accrual system, any amount owing to your estate in respect of an accrual claim is deemed property in your deceased estate.

Deductions that are allowed As an ordinary resident of South Africa, the Act makes provision for the value of certain assets to be deducted from your estate before levying estate duty. These include: • Section 4(a): The cost of funeral, tombstone, and deathbed expenses, including doctor’s fees, burial and cremation costs, as well as death notice advertisements. • Section 4(b): Debts owed in South Africa, including any taxes owing to SARS, including income tax and capital gains tax. • Section 4(c) and (d): The costs of administration, including executor’s fees, Master’s fees, bank costs on the estate late bank account, newspaper advertisement costs, transfer and bond cancellation costs and valuation costs. • Section 4(h): Bequests made to certain public benefit organisations which are approved in terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act. • Section 4(q) deduction: In terms of this section of the Estate Duty Act, no estate duty is payable on the value of the assets bequeathed to your surviving spouse but will be postponed until the death of the second-dying spouse. Determining the net value of your estate After subtracting the allowable deductions, you apply the R3.5 million abatement provided in terms of Section 4A of the Act. If you are the first-dying spouse, this abatement can be rolled over to your surviving spouse who will then have up to a R7 million abatement in the event of her death. It is therefore important to ensure that you have estate plans developed for each of you as the first-dying spouse so that you fully understand the estate duty implications in each of your estates. With this in mind, one of the primary functions of estate planning is to reduce the amount of tax your deceased estate is liable for, and this can be done in a number of ways, including the use of retirement products, inter vivos trusts, and donations, and these instruments should all be considered in the development of your plan.
