While acknowledging that COVID is still a thing that is out there, what a pleasure it has been to begin venturing into more crowded spaces and to see people’s full faces without a mask concealing their expressions. Emerging out of winter hibernation lends an extra measure of relief. To complete the picture, I just to need to feel the freedom of being in shorts and slops with all the coats and jerseys packed away. It will be real bliss to feel grass and warm beach sand underfoot and to actually enjoy a cool breeze.

This rarely seen tiny bird is richly coloured with extensive black spotting and yellow legs. The male is less richly coloured than the female. The call is a low booming sound. It is endemic to the Western Cape and endangered. The nest is a scanty pad of dry grass, under a tuft of grass drawn down to form a canopy. Their habitat is coastal and mountain fynbos, shrub land and grass patches in fynbos.

My perception is that the sweeping changes forced on us over the past two years have led to an altered outlook and expectation for many people, and especially younger people.

Having seen that there are other ways that the world can work, I feel that there is a desire for a more flexible, kinder and more accommodating arrangement in workplaces. Being from the end of the “Boomer” generation, I left the workplace just at peak of the ‘corporation greed’ era when shareholder profit was paramount and wellbeing was secondary. Pay employees enough and they will do anything for you to succeed, became the business model. The Gen X and Gen Y began to question this model, and now, emerging from COVID, the new Gen Z “Zoomer” generation re-starting their careers will place very different demands on prospective employers, beyond just money. A degree of choice in the balance between freedom, lifestyle and reward will likely become the new model in the workplace contract. I believe that this is a good thing... I do wonder though, how long it will endure before the “next big idea” comes along to challenge it. But for now, I hope you enjoy the Spring season and this new Muse edition.
Add to that, the prospect of a summer season of live sport and it may just be enough to dispel the gloom of an ailing global economy and environment and the very real hard times faced by many families as a result. My hope is that the indomitable human spirit will again find a way to make it better again.

On the 12th August 2022 the group that meets on the second Friday morning of the month to creatively sew and share their passion for fabric, celebrated their 40th birthday. Founder member Hazelmay Duncan shared the memories over the years of the many quilts they made for each other, for charity and for the ill. Wanda Carmichael also remembered the years of shared friendships forged through the love for patchwork. An incredibly well done to Cannons Creek Grade 11 pupil, Thomas Kabalin, who placed 2nd at the recent Computer Applications Olympiad. The first two rounds of the Applications Olympiad were written at entrants' schools, with only 13 pupils reaching the final round which took place in-person in Pretoria. According to the Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa (IITPSA), the Applications Olympiad is part of the South African Computer Olympiad, and is one of the oldest and biggest events of its kind in the world. First launched in 1984, the Computer Olympiad aims to identify, encourage and reward computer aptitude, promote and encourage computer studies and create an awareness of career opportunities in ICT. The Applications Olympiad is a challenge for those who take CAT or the ICDL or are otherwise computer literate. Participants needed to solve a number of problems using a Microsoft Office package and the data Thomasprovided.said,"Getting flown up by the IITPSA to participate was an amazing experience. I met some of the top CAT and IT students in the country, as well as some of the top professionals in the South African IT industry. Placing in the top 13 in the country was already an achievement, but getting second exceeded my expectations."

At his studio we admired the tiled wall art - the small tiles depict famous people, botanicals, animals, crochet work (yes!) and patterns. We examined some pottery bowls decorated with the image of a sea
The annual Eskom Expo for Young Scientists has been running since 1980 and is South Africa's premier science fair for school students, where they have an opportunity to exhibit their own scientific investigations. Eskom Expo brings together students, teachers, science professionals, educational bodies and governments from Southern Africa. This was the first in-person Regional Eskom Expo since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was held at Herzlia High School on 11 August 2022. There were a total of 158 projects entered, from 26 different schools. The projects are marked and judged by academics, researchers, teachers and industry professionals. Congratulations to our Grade 11 pupils who entered 12 projects, and won 19 medals, 4 category awards and 4 special prizes. This is an exceptional achievement. PNPS will be embarking on an exciting transformative technology journey. As a school community, we have decided to launch oneto-one Chromebook devices for grades 4 to 6 during June 2023, just in time for our Project-based learning heavy term. All stakeholders involved have done extensive research to find the best device and service provider to meet our requirements. As a Google school, we saw fit to invest in Chromebooks through CloudEDU. During the past four years, our pupils have been exposed to a bank of Chromebooks which we have used to teach them the skills needed to use this device efficiently, effectively and safely. This exposure to the device allowed us to decide on Chromebooks for our one-to-one initiative. Our parents will be making this huge investment into their children’s learning under the guidance of our trained teaching staff and EdTech champions, Martin Adamson and Tamsin Carelse. With the introduction of devices in our daily teaching, our teachers will not just be shoehorning technology into their exciting pedagogy, but using this tool to enhance teaching and learning, ultimately preparing our 21st-century pupils with computational skills needed to thrive in this digital age. Outstanding art and music department Nurturing aftercare facilities
When Pinelands North Primary School was looking at starting Red Roots, the school management researched each part of the project very carefully. We had heard about an interesting approach to learning and teaching which was started in Northern Italy just after World War 2. Italy was badly affected by the war and most people were exceptionally poor thereafter. In 1947 the whole community of the town of Reggio Emilia decided to build a school for their children and ‘teach’ them differently. Led by Loris Malaguzzi, a young teacher, they transformed early learning for children and now the city is known for its distinctive approach to learning. From babyhood, children are encouraged to explore their environment as a third teacher, using ‘100 languages’ where writing, reading and speaking are not the only skills valued. Twice a year, the International Malaguzzi Centre invites teachers from around the world to experience this learning in Reggio itself. Several staff had attended a Reggio conference at UCT before we implemented this approach, but being able to hear directly from those involved and being able to visit a school who ‘lives’ by the system, challenged my thinking about schooling all over again!

This year the event was held from 13 to 17 June and was attended by participants from 26 countries. I was one of two South Africans: a young architect from Johannesburg who was sent by a private school who wants him to build them a Reggio inspired pre-school attended with me!

Every two years the School Governing Body at our school sends the principal overseas to attend some international learning!

Every few weeks a set time is arranged for each group to gather and chat, with the mentor present at a distance. There are, on average, two organised activities per term. The activity is aimed at being ageappropriate for the range of ages in the group. One of the first events this year was on Valentine’s Day, which we called Friendship Day. The groups designed and created a mobile with messages of 'My heart is full’. They had to draw or write down what makes their ‘heart full’ - family, friends, pets, sport, music. For Human Rights Day, the Gr 3 to 6s, engaged in a mature, in-depth discussion held on the rights and responsibilities of children in South Africa. In June, the groups celebrated Youth Day by making paper chains. They drew themselves on the given template which symbolised that across the grades, cultural heritages and religions, they are the youth, the future, making a difference together. It was wonderful to observe how each pupil decorated themselves on the chain to represent their own unique identity. It has been heart-warming to watch how the groups have bonded and connected, chatting freely, joking and talking quietly with each other. The Grade 6s have risen to the challenge of their roles - they have empowered themselves and are far more comfortable with their responsibilities.

The teacher mentors meet with the Gr 6 leaders giving guidance and suggestions to develop leadership skills. When the groups meet to chat, the teacher mentor can observe and facilitate where necessary with situations such as group dynamics.
ACTIVITIES

The Cool2Care initiative was, therefore, launched in January 2022. There are 26 Care groups each consisting of a mix of pupils from Gr 1 to 6. The groups stay the same as they move up each year. The new Gr 6s become the leaders, and the new Gr 1’s (and other new children) are added. Each group is mentored by a teacher. The teachers have enjoyed watching the group members develop confidence and work comfortably with one another.

As part of the leadership programme introduced in 2018, the Grade 6 pupils were paired with a Grade 1 pupil for the year. The Grade 6s mentored the new Grade 1s and throughout the year various opportunities were created for them to read together, play games, and make cards for one another’s birthdays. The challenges born out of the pandemic encouraged us to grow this initiative to include every child in the school. GROUPS

This is a chance for the Grade 6 pupil (our senior grade) to lead activities through guidance, direction and motivation. The natural play environment requires children to interact with one another and express themselves. In this situation children learn vocabulary (Yes…sometimes some vocabulary we would not choose for them to learn), sentence structure, grammar and intonation along with more subtle skills of understanding and reading body language.
Play fosters cognitive growth by offering problem solving scenarios. Playing in the sandpit, water table and tactile play ponds stretch the concepts of measurement, estimation, spatial development and basic computation in a very practical and meaningful way. Research repeatedly points to hands-on, experiential learning being the door to true understanding and grasping of concepts. Learning through discovery is a key part of the play centred environment and a solid foundation for later concept based learning.
This is the area of development where I often see the most measurable learning taking place. The experience of sharing, negotiating, compromise, expressing your needs and wants, dealing with conflict, understanding others and their different needs and abilities, regulating emotions, dealing with disappointment, frustrations, winning, losing, leading and following are among some of the immeasurable opportunities for learning. We recently added some lengths of fabric to our extensive array of playground equipment at Meerendal. The idea was that the children would be able to create hidey holes with it by covering crates and jungle gym nooks. They did this and so much more. They invented tug of war games, made sledges, princess outfits and created long hair. They used it as a lasso and also almost a noose! The experience of playing with a length of fabric led to much more creativity, fun and learning than I could have anticipated.

As parents and teachers of young children, we often focus on learning in the controlled and formal classroom environment and I suspect, undervalue the learning potential of play. Maria Montessori said “Play is the work of the child”. I am privileged to often watch children at play and I have to agree that it is no coincidence that children are so consumed by the “work” of play. Play offers children a developmentally appropriate platform for a multitude of rich learning and is a natural and essential part of healthy development

So often as parents and teachers of smaller children, we want to jump in when we see a child struggling, or when they are just taking too long to get a task done. Our hearts ache at watching their frustration, or we get frustrated ourselves. Examples of this could be tying a child’s shoelaces, even if they can do this themselves. Or getting them dressed in the morning, just because it’s faster - and we all know the morning routine is stressful enough as it is. The problem with this is that we are teaching our children a kind of learned helplessness. They might start to believe that they are incapable of doing something without adult help. We can see the effects of this in the classroom, where learners get quickly frustrated, or just plainly state “I can’t!” To combat this, we start to use the mantra above – If they can, they must. If they can tie that shoelace, we need to let them. If they can dress themselves, no matter how painfully slowly, we should encourage them to do so. Simple tasks, such as unpacking their school-bag or placing their dishes in the sink, are such easy examples of what even a three-year old can do. So what are the benefits to this? Well, kind of endless really. The most obvious of which is fostering independence, confidence and a good self-esteem. We can see this in our own school children who will so often walk into school self-assuredly, and have the confidence to tackle any task or challenge during their school day. These positive traits are also important in ensuring our children learn to problem-solve, or ask for help if they need it. This in turn helps them learn from their mistakes, and admit them without fear of judgment or rejection. Asking for help is an essential skill and we need to reinforce this in the pre-school environment. High self-esteem allows our children to be proud of what they achieve, whether it be getting an award, or just completing a difficult task. The positive character traits will encourage our children to try new things (essential for learning), adapt to change, learn initiative, and self-regulate their emotions. Socially, these children make friends more easily, have a positive self-image, are more resilient and therefore less impacted by ‘failures’ or negative social interactions, either in person or online. So back to our mantra of “If they can, they must” - how do we know what our children can do? If you Google this question, you will probably get hundreds of sites telling you what your child should be capable of at specific ages. However in this scenario, I feel that the answer to this is up to each parent at home, and teacher in the classroom. As you get to know your child, you will become more familiar with what they are able to do by themselves. Children often live up to the expectations placed on them – small expectations produce small results, but if we let them, they can astound us. Inspire and encourage them to do chores around the house, and keep heaping on the praise. Endowments: When taking out an endowment policy, you swap your tax position for that of the life insurer which means that, instead of paying tax on interest earned at your marginal tax rate, you are taxed at a rate of 30%, although keep in mind that no annual interest exemptions apply in this regard. Dividends withholding tax of 20% applies. While endowments may have certain tax advantages for higherincome earners, there are a number of restrictive rules that apply to contributions and withdrawals making them suitable for investment period of five years or longer.
Shares: As an investor, any dividends that you earn from South African listed companies (or dual-listed non-resident companies, do not attract income tax but are subject to Dividends Withholding Tax at a flat rate of 20%.

Retirement funds: Without a doubt, retirement funds provide investors with the most significant tax benefits. This is because all contributions made towards a retirement fund, up to 27.5% of your annual taxable income, can be claimed as a tax deduction. Any over-contributions made in a given tax year can be rolled over to the following tax-year for tax purpose. Further, no tax is paid on any interest or dividends earned with the fund, and no CGT is payable on disposal. In addition, at retirement, an investor has the option of withdrawing one-third of the fund in cash with the first R500 000 being free from tax.

Cash and bonds: As an individual taxpayer, you are liable to pay tax at your marginal rate on interest earned in your investments, including cash, bonds, stokvels and any money housed in your medical savings account. However, keep in mind that South African tax residents are granted a tax exemption on the first R23 800 earned per year in respect of investors under the age of 65. For those over age 65, the exemption increases to R34 500 per year. When filing your tax returns, local interest must be declared in the Investment Income section of your tax return. If you earn foreign interest, you will need to declare the Rand amount to SARS when filing your tax returns and that no annual exemption applies.

Generally speaking, if an investor holds less than 10% of equities in a foreign-listed company, any foreign dividends received must be declared and are subject to DWT at 20%, although SARS will allow a tax exemption which equals 25/45 of the Rand value of the foreign dividend (i.e., 55.65%), which will be reduced by any foreign tax already paid.
Importantly, you may be liable for CGT when you dispose of shares, so it is important to understand the tax implications of doing so before making a sale. Remember also that you do not pay CGT when your investment manager buys and sells underlying assets in your portfolio. Where you are invested directly through a foreign-domiciled feeder fund, you will not be taxed on currency movement while you are invested – but when you realise all or part of your foreign investment, the foreign capital gain or loss will be calculated and translated into Rands using the average exchange rate at the date of sale.

Each year the Grade 1 children make laminated handprints and the Grade 7 children write letters of memories and wisdom to future Pinehurst children, which are put into the time vault. This last tradition is five years old this year and the first Grade 7 letter writers are currently in Matric. It was exciting during CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY! the ceremony this year to take their letters out (which will be displayed in the school’s reception area). A reunion is being planned for later this year when we can re-ignite old friendships and return the letters to the authors. In two years from now, the Grade 1 handprints will also start to come out when the first artists reach Grade 7.

The Pinehurst Primary School Founder’s Day celebration is held annually in August on the Friday closest to the founding principal’s birthday. 4. With the braai grid at medium heat, brush lightly with oil & place the kebabs on it. Turn the kebabs frequently. DO NOT BASTE YET. If you put the basting sauce on now, it will burn and leave a very unpleasant taste in your mouth.
Sticky Braai Bacon Kebabs is a recipe I developed specifically for Heritage Day.
makes 5 Ingredients for the sauce 200 ml / 3/4 cup white vinegar 125 ml sugar 1 red chilli 15 ml / 1 T grated fresh ginger 15 ml / 1 T honey 30 ml / 2 T soy sauce 15 ml / 1 T peanut oil 30 ml / 2 T hoisin sauce Ingredients for the kebabs 450 g Braai Bacon cut into 2 cm chunks 12 peppadews 1 medium pineapple - peeled and cut in chunks the same size as the bacon 10 ml / 2 t course salt 10 ml / 2 t smoked paprika 5 ml / 1 t lemon pepper
3. To assemble the kebab skewers, layer braai bacon chunks, peppadews and pineapple in your desired order. Work to fit 3 pieces of the bacon onto each kebab.

Trust me, in South Africa, most people call it “Braai Day”. Not that we need any motivation to light a fire, invite a few friends and cook something really scrumptious. As part of Heritage month, I am exploring locally lekker recipes with a South African “must have”, bacon. Traditionally we make potato bake loaded
Locally we can now find Braai Bacon in our local supermarket fridges, but you can also use pork rashers or chicken breasts cut into chunks for this recipe.
6. Serve with the bacon-wrapped garlic potatoes and a fresh salad. My preferred salad is a rocket, fennel and apple salad. The bitterness of the rocket and the tartness of the apple gives a welcome freshness to the meal.

2. To make the kebabs: Cut the braai bacon into finger-sized chunks (about 2 cm). Season with the salt, smoked paprika and lemon pepper.

Another trademark of a typical South African braai is the sauce. Oh man, we love sauces. Basting sauces that is. We love them sweet and sticky. So, give the people what they want! This basting sauce ticks all the boxes for me. Of course the pineapple and peppadews bring a zestiness to every mouthful.
5. The kebabs must be 3/4 done, before the basting is slathered on. Keep basting until the kebabs are done.
Wait, did someone just mention “braai” and bacon in the same sentence? It can only mean deliciousness! Spring has sprung and with that, the aromas of a Heritage Day braai is a scent away. Just when you thought bacon couldn’t get better.
