Design Philosophy
Interior Design for me is an act relating people and the surroundings. I tend to think space and the people in it are two interchangeable roles of stage and performer. As an interior designer, my role is to discover the most significant relationship between them and create sets to reflect it, strengthen it, serve it, upgrade it, activate it... The works I have included in this folio were put into 3 sections of Site Specificity, Group Work and Expanded Field. They are collectively what I think is the base, energy and support of my design practice. Site Specificity is being loyal and responding to the site in terms of its spacial structure, visual characteristics, human behaviour and inhabitation, movement of light and poetic nature. Group Work taught me the power of a team as well as the importance of specialty research. When operating in a team, one need to communicate well and act with the group in mind; one need to have one or two outstanding fortes and also general skills; one need to contribute creative ideas together with convincing evidence and disadvantage analysis. Expanded Field is my personal interest in publication and furniture which provide myself with background knowledge of graphics, printing, materiality and making technology.

The Extended Screens
Inspired by René Magritte’s work The Son of Man, the final installation was designed to create the illusion of reversing spatial interior and exterior by projecting the outdoor feature into an indoor space. The design also challenged the idea of mirror into something that only shows your back.

THE SUR-BLIME
Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP) ::: Entrance
Project Sur-blime started with observing and exploring the concept of smudges, surfaces and sublime in spaces. Then distil the ideas and apply them into a wall installation in Centre for Contemporary Photography, relating to its surrounding visual feature, spatial composition, and participants’ behaviour.

YPA: I explore the technique of involving audience, which was really engaging. The viewer was controlled in their way of seeing and walking either voluntarily or unconsciously. Such technique can be used in exhibit planning so that people are physically approaching the works as well as understanding them freshly.

The mutual wall between Gallery 1 and Gallery 3 provides a partition between the “stage” and the “viewing area”.
Black pins and elastic bands create an interactive drawing wall. The smudge-like pins are also related to the idea of dots, lines and plane.
The idea of understanding the wall as an pixelated image developed into the intention of changing the visual effect of the entire wall by changing each individual pixel.

For the first test of material, I cut cotton cloth into square pieces and saw the edge of each piece on the round board. The fabric responded well to the lighting change and its shape and shadow shift when viewed from different angles. However the modal was only made only for one side of the wall.

Model Making Models for pixel circles were made to help exploring possibilities for a light filtering wall that changes when people pass by.
By imitating the structure of shutters that in certain angles, the view from one side of the wall can be limited while not on the other side, several models in the same shape were made by card paper. Although the function worked out well, the material was too stiff.
Wall Structure
Testing of material ::: Form board and cotton sheet (from Gallery 3)
By excavating a flat cylinder out of the wall and suspend it in front of the same spot, a subtle light effect occurs and it can respond to people walking pass from behind. Testing of model structure (less fabric pieces) ::: Cupboard and cotton cloth
Wall Design A larger model was made to mimic the scene and light effect in CCP. An elevation of the wall and a participant’s route were designed to fit the wall design and a program was designed according to lighting from different time of the day.
Since the lighting effect has gradually shown its importance. I ran a small test which abandoned the idea of using additional material but purely changing the structure of the wall. A round hole was dig out of the wall and the relic was left hanging, supported by wood sticks. The lighting effect was unexpectedly well presented for the different of brightness on both sides were significant and the movement of light from only one side can be seen from the other. https://vimeo.com/42954227#

The shape of the installation was inspired by the vegetation in front of the building.
By sketching the leaves and branches, the possible shapes and joints were studied.
The shape of the leaves was translated into a round structure and was decided as an extended balcony frame.

Smith Library is a project commissioned by RMIT Law school to renovate Justice Smith Library into a contemporary learning space. It was a collaborative work by 6 interior design students. The development of the work went through a series of research by reading, drawing, model making and on-site measuring.
Flexible learning environments are explored in two table designs. One of them is a four metre length communal table allowing for individual and group research, use of the projector and access to the whiteboard. It segments the space like the double sided bookshelf that it sits alongside

THE SMITH LIBRARY PROJECT
Research and learning occurs in and around the books. This flexible bench design allows one to sit quietly in the background while still facing toward the room, tables moving around to accommodate for individual and group use.
With half of the room wrapped in book shelving space and half in learning space, the plan of the Library developed out of a need to balance desired experiences and flexibility with pragmatics. The shelves allow to the collection to grow and the table spaces provide for use by up to 20 people comfortably seated.

Group Work
The design focuses on the shelving system. It draws on the power of a continuous surface and also satisfies the capacity of its growing law report collection. Various types of studying area allow both group work and individual work. The space is open above eye-level to keep the interior bright and visually spacious.

Public Participation Communicating ideas
Hospital of Broken Things is a project I did with Dr. Ross Mcleod and 15 RMIT interior students in Hangzhou, China. The whole process from generating ideas to finishing installing took 25 days and the pavilion was open to public for 7 days together with other pavilions in idw(International Design Week). The idea of the installation was about material sustainability and life support, which was presented by 6 furniture made locally, 15 exhibits by each student, and 3 hospitalised spaces. The design borrowed the idea of unbridled imagination and the form of familiar objects from surrealism. It exaggerated the cushion thickness and created a hybrid between cactus-shaped seat and running-like legs. Its intention is to contrast urban busy life with a subconsciously playful mind.
