1997 Summary Analysis
The population figures used in this book are estimates based on data received from the Governor's Office of Planning and Budget. In the Crime in Utah editions prior to 1993, BCI used population estimates provided by the FBI. As a result, crime rates published in this report will not be identical to the Utah crime rates used in the FBI publications. BCI uses the Planning and Budget Office figures because they are comparable to the FBI estimates and are available earlier in the year, allowing more timely publication of this report.
Utah's population grew from 2,054,714 in 1996 to 2,132,242 in 1997, a 3.8% increase.
In 1997, a total of 121,055 index crimes were committed which indicates a 4.0% increase in overall crime from 1996.
Violent crimes increased by 5.3% from the previous year, with increases in robbery (3.8%) and rape (15.9%), while murder decreased (8.3%).
Firearms were used in 61.8% of the murders reported.
Property crimes increased by 4.0%.
There was a 10.3% increase in burglaries in 1997.
Arson increased by 4.1%, and larceny increased by 2.4%.
The value of property stolen amounted to $99,539,794. Of that amount, $32,805,466 was recovered, indicating a 33% recovery rate.
Residential burglaries accounted for 50.1% of all burglaries. Of all residential burglaries, 43.9% were committed during daytime hours (6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.).
Reported hate crimes decreased from 64 in 1996 to 40 in 1997, a 37.5% decrease.
The following agencies did not participate in 1997. Their population represents 2.2% of the State.

The Crime Clock should be viewed with care. Being an aggregate representation of UCR data, it is designed to convey the annual reported crime experience by showing the relative frequency in occurrence of the Index Offenses. This mode of display should not be taken to imply a regularity in the commission of the Part I Offenses; rather, it represents the annual ratio of crime to fixed time intervals.
