HELLO BUDAPEST

BUDAPEST DAY AND NIGHT Budapest always. Those who are planning on coming to Budapest always ask me when is the best time of the year to visit our capital – when is it the most beautiful, or when is it the warmest. My answer is quite simple: Budapest is always worth a visit. It always has on its “Sunday best”, whether it is the flirty spring or the festival-filled summer, the romantic and colorful autumn or the winter loaded with indoor programs. But let’s focus on winter in Budapest. The coldest season offers a buzzing cultural scene, awesome parties, long romantic walks on the snow-covered downtown streets, and buckets of mulled wine that warms not only our bodies, but our hearts, too. I am especially proud of our Christmas market which is one of the most beautiful in all of Europe. So, just enjoy this beautiful city, take long walks, drink mulled wine, taste the best local food, immerse yourself in the cavalcade of cultural programs day and night. Me and my colleagues are here to help you in discovering the city and providing you with up-to-date information on LGBTQ-friendly Budapest. And finally, in case you are feeling cold, don’t forget to try pálinka and enjoy Budapest, because Budapest loves you! #pinkbudapest #budapestlovesyou Zsolt Erdei President of Humen Travel Tourism Association CEO of Humen Media Group

HELLO BUDAPEST

Although Budapest is a big city sprawling over more than 500 km2 and with a population of 1.7 million, most of the sights are located in the city center and all of them are easy to reach. Budapest is definitely not one of those cities that you can fully explore in two or three days. However, if you’re staying only for a short or a long weekend, you still have an opportunity to discover the most important sights, some local entertainment spots and perhaps some hidden treasures too. Let’s see what Budapest has to offer to serious city-hoppers who have no time to waste!

Deák Ferenc tér

6

If you only spend one weekend in our beloved capital, we suggest that you start your tour from Deák Ferenc tér. When you’re finished marveling at the stunning buildings, you may enter Deák Ferenc utca, aka Fashion Street which takes you almost directly to the Danube and the stunning River Promenade. After enjoying the view from the riverbank, you can cross the Danube on the Chain Bridge, leading you directly

Chain Bridge Buda Castle

to the station of the Castle Hill funicular (Budavári Sikló) which is the easiest way to get to the top of the hill while also providing a perfect view of the city. Inside Buda Castle, you can find the beautiful Matthias Fountain, statues of the mythical Turul bird and the lions of the courtyard; the National Széchényi Library, the National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. Don’t miss the Matthias Church (Mátyás-templom) and the Fisherman’s Bastion (Halászbástya) which are next to the castle. The former has a magnificent white façade paired with an ornately colored tiled roof, while the latter offers panoramic views of the entire city from one of the highest points in Buda. Buda Tower, aka Mária Magdolna-torony also gives you a

unique view of the city, particularly of the Pest side of Budapest. After some exploring in the castle district, you can go back to the Pest side on the Chain Bridge and head north towards the magnificent building of the Parliament. If you are not so keen on actually taking a guided tour to visit the building, you may indulge in something sweet in the Szamos Chocolate Museum on the corner of Kossuth tér, which is owned by of one of the oldest and most famous chocolate manufactures of Hungary. History buffs will be more than happy to take a walk past the statue of Ronald Reagan on the nearby Szabadság tér (Liberty Square) where you can still find a Soviet war memorial. From there, through the quieter streets of the

financial district, you can reach Saint Stephen’s basilica (named in honor of Stephen I, the first king of Hungary). The dome of the basilica offers one of the most spectacular views of the buzzing city below. You can reach the top by walking up 364 steps or by taking the elevators. Continuing your way behind the Basilica, you will find a road full of luxury shops, a nod to Paris’s

avenues, called Andrássy út, leading directly to the historical Heroes’ Square. If you feel your legs giving out, the metro M1 (the first subway line ever built in continental Europe) takes you back to Deák Ferenc tér, where areas of Gozsdu Udvar (Gozsdu Courtyard), Király and Nagymező utca have cropped up as fashionable places to eat, drink and party.

DAY TWO

Churches may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but missing the Great Synagogue in Dohány utca would be quite a mistake, so your next stop should really be this amazing house of worship – the largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest in the world. The historical streets of the surrounding Jewish Quarter are full of popular cafés, bars and ruin pubs, including Szimpla Bar, an absolute favorite for tourists and locals alike. Besides the never-ending parties,

they also host a farmer’s market every Sunday morning. Talking about farmer’s markets, Budapest has quite a few 19th century market halls. The largest and most prominent of them is the one on Fővám tér. If you feel like tasting some local specialties or just want to buy some fresh product, this is the place to go. Although the Chain Bridge is the oldest and most well-known bridge of Budapest, the intricate ironwork of Szabadság híd (Liberty Bridge) may be an even more astonishing sight. This bridge connects Fővám tér and Szent Gellért tér, the latter being home to the beautiful Gellért Hotel

and Spa at the base of Gellért Hill, named after a Christian martyr whose statue stands on the hill. With a little hike, you can reach the top of Gellért Hill where the Hungarian Statue of Liberty welcomes you. If you want to gain some more experiences in greener environments, visiting Margit-sziget (Margaret Island) is a must. The island’s rich flora will surely amaze you, no matter which season you choose to visit it. Besides a music fountain, a couple of medieval ruins and a mini zoo, the island also boasts a running track around its perimeters. If you have more time on your hands, for example, after

taking the obligatory photos in Heroes’ Square, take a long and relaxing walk in the City Park, or recharge your batteries at the nearby Széchenyi Bath – we can guarantee that you won’t regret it, especially in winter. Another attraction of the City Park is the stunning architecture: discover Vajdahunyad Castle which was built in 1896 to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the conquest of the area by the Hungarians. Similarly, if you are into the arts, take time to visit the now reopened and nicely renovated Hungarian Museum of Fine Arts next to the City Park.

BUDA TOWER – THE NEW CULTURAL VENUE OF BUDAPEST

A new chapter began in the history of Buda Tower in the summer of 2017: after a long period of time, visitors of the castle can now see a new exhibition in the building. Buda Tower, aka the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene is a new and extraordinary attraction on the Buda side of the capital as it is the only authentic medieval Gothic monument in the Castle District. The tower has remained primarily intact through its 600 years, although the castle of Buda was under siege several times. The building is going to host a historical exhibition in the tower as well as the famous noon bell which commemorates the brave Hungarian soldiers who fought in the siege of Belgrade. A 24-piece chime structure built in the windows plays a Hungarian piece every hour and visitors can also admire the bronze copy of the 1000-year-old Hungarian coronation robe, which is adorned with portraits of saints, prophets and apostles. Climb up the 172 stairs and enjoy a fantastic view with the most amazing buildings of Budapest as well as the sight of the green hills of Buda. Open every day, from 10 am to 6 pm (in January and February only on Saturday and Sunday). 1014 Budapest, Kapisztrán tér 6. (in the Castle District) www.budatower.hu

SPA BUDAPEST

THE SPAS

OF BUDAPEST ’City of Spas’ – Budapest holds the title since the year 1934, as it has more thermal and medicinal water springs than any other capital city in the world. There are 118 springs in Budapest, providing over 70 million liters of thermal water a day. The temperature of the waters is between 21 and 78 Celsius. Budapest has been well-known for its thermal springs ever since the 2nd century, when Romans colonized the area to take advantage of the location and the enormous network of healing waters below. During the Turkish occupation of the area, in the 16th century even more baths were built (some of which are still standing today). Thankfully, this tradition has not died in recent times. Budapest has a wide array of spas to offer and we’re going to show you the best.

SZÉCHENYI BATHS Széchenyi boasts 18 pools and it is the largest medicinal bath in Europe. The building itself is arguably one of the most beautiful in all of Budapest, built in 1913 within the City Park (Városliget) in Neo-Baroque style. There are large 16

outdoor and indoor pools, saunas, steam rooms, massage areas and more. This bath complex is easily recognizable for the chess boards found in the outdoor pools – where old and young can relax in the water and unwind for hours on end. 1146 Budapest, Állatkerti körút 9-11. szechenyifurdo.hu

GELLÉRT BATHS The second largest spa in Budapest is part of the Hotel Gellért in Buda near Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd). Built between 1912 and 1918 in Art Nouveau style, the bath complex contains 13 pools, outdoor and indoor swimming pools, saunas and medicinal water baths. Massages are also available upon advance booking. 1118 Budapest, Kelenhegyi út 4. gellertfurdo.hu 17

other smaller rooms. The attached swimming pool is always open for men and women, but all the other spaces are divided up for men and women by day.

It was built in 1550 at the foot of the Gellért Hill in Buda under the reign of the Ottoman Empire and houses a typically gorgeous, Turkish bath with a central dome and

LUKÁCS BATHS

KIRÁLY BATHS

The spring water at Lukács is probably the best known of all the spas in Budapest. The bath is waiting visitors with classical thermal, swimming and leisure pools and a sauna park. Many people swear by the healing powers of the water at this spa, ranging from curing stomach and kidney problems to a lack of calcium in the bones.

Király is an original Turkish bath and coincidentally also the smallest of our top spas. With one well-known octagonal bath and several other smaller pools and rooms, this is a quaint place which is well hidden and therefore not so well-known by tourists coming to Budapest.

EXPLORE THE WONDERFUL WINTER BUDAPEST

When you think about Budapest, a bunch of historic buildings, spas, museums and the nine breathtaking bridges spanning the river Danube comes to mind – however, the city center has a lot more to offer. Explore the magic of winter Budapest, try the famous Outdoor Ice Rink and visit the marvelous Christmas Fairs.

OUTDOOR ICE RINK IN THE CITY PARK There are a lot of fun winter activites in Budapest, but one of the best is definitely skating at the Outdoor Ice Rink in the City Park (Városligeti műjégpálya). Opened in 1870, Europe’s oldest and largest ice rink is located in the heart of the city between the magic Vajdahunyad Castle and the famous Heroes’ Square. The open air 20

City Park Ice Rink is on the top 10 list of Lonely Planet as one of the best places in Europe in winter time. In the palace of the Outdoor Ice Rink you will find heated rooms where you can get changed, rent skates for cheap as well as eat and drink something hot. The Outdoor Ice Rink in the City Park usually opens around mid-November, but it depends on the actual weather every year, so we would advise to look up the exact opening date beforehand.

It offers a wide range of fancy restaurants and all of the well-known fast fashion and designer shops. In the festive season, you can stroll along a beautifully decorated street from the City Market Hall to Vörösmarty tér, which hosts one of the most beautiful Christmas fairs in Central Europe. HELLO GASTRONOMY BUDAPEST

HUNGRY IN HUNGARY As soon as you arrive in Budapest after a long and tiring journey, the first question you will ask is what you can eat here. There is a wide range of dishes you can choose from and we can assure you that you’ll find something to your liking. Here’s a list of Hungarian must-try dishes you shouldn’t miss during your stay in Budapest.

ENTRÉE

Goulash soup (gulyásleves)

This is a tasty soup and you should definitely give it a try. Although its consistency is a bit thicker than a simple soup, it’s not a ragout. Goulash soup is made of meat, vegetables, lovely little dumplings, some (actually, a lot of) spices and the most essential Hungarian ingredient: paprika powder. This red powder is basically a kind of ground pepper and it gives a unique taste to many dishes. 33

TOP5 BUDAPEST FASHION GASTRONOMY

MAIN DISH

Chicken paprika (Csirkepaprikás)

This chicken stew is made with lots of onions, tomatoes, peppers, paprika, and some spoonfuls of sour cream in the end to give it a creamy texture. It has everything you desire: nicely cooked meat in a creamy sauce served with dumplings.

DESSERT

Dobos cake (Dobos torta)

This layer cake is really popular in Hungary. You can’t take a walk without seeing these palatable creations in the windows of cake shops. Besides being delicious, Dobos cake is also addictive, so watch out! The soft sponge cake layers are glued to each other with cocoa cream and there is a layer of caramelized sugar on top. If you have a sweet tooth, this cake is right up your street!

STREET FOOD Lángos

I have seen so many translations of ‘lángos’ that it’s hard to give a proper translation. Anyway, this specialty is a deep-fried flatbread made of flour, water, salt and yeast. Simple, yet amazing! After deep-frying it, they usually put some garlic oil, a LOT of sour cream and EVEN MORE grated cheese on top just to make 34

GASTRONOMY

it heart-friendly. I absolutely love lángos because it is easy to make, and if you’re lazy, you can get it literally anywhere in Hungary.

WHAT TO DRINK?

Hungary has amazing wine regions, therefore trying at least 3-4 different wines is a must. One would usually go for a glass of wine from Tokaj, but let’s not forget Hungary’s famous lake, Balaton, where we have excellent wineries in the hills surrounding it. If you are about to start a nice meal or just hanging out with a friend and preparing for a party in downtown you might want to try pálinka. This is basically a fruit brandy, drunk in shots, made of plums, apricots or cherries but there are a lot of other versions of it. Due to the high alcohol content it might come in handy for digestion but it can also be helpful in raising the mood!

Guests love it so much for its great value, its flavors and presentation that in January Antré was chosen to be among the TOP 10 best restaurants offering a daily lunch menu in Budapest by the Hungarian gastro magazine Magyar Konyha. In addition, this fall Antré received the Special Prize of ’Best Service’ on the basis of nearly 3,000 independent

readers’ votes of the international gastro magazine Dining City. All in all, the team of Antré is happy to welcome you any day of the week with care and passion for gastronomy, friendly service and with the same modern and open-minded way of thinking that they practice in the kitchen. GASTRONOMY

BEAUTIFUL DELICACIES IN THE SZAMOS GOURMET HOUSE Quality is of utmost important to the Szamos family, since they have a reputation for premium quality products. One of the most famous confectioneries in Hungary is located in a beautiful renovated downtown palace built in the second half of the 1800s. The Szamos family opened their flagship store, the Gourmet House on Vörösmarty Square, which functions as a confectionery, a museum, a café and a chocolate 40

manufacture under the same roof. The House offers Hungarian and Austrian specialties, evoking the time of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy when café culture flourished in Budapest. From handmade bonbons through cakes to marzipan, prepared from quality ingredients, all kinds of

HELLO GASTRONOMY BUDAPEST

Szamos products can be found in the House. The shop offers various truffle assortments, gift boxes and about 40 different marzipan bonbons. Marzipan is a Szamos specialty, which was first mastered by Mátyás Szamos in the 1930s. Ever since, Szamos has been famous for its marzipan treats and the Szamos family became one of the most famous Hungarian confectionery dynasties. In order to fit in with the elegant building of the Exchange Palace, the Gourmet House teamed up with the Herendi Porcelain Manufacture as a design partner. The two companies’ continuing respect for traditions mean less movement and modernity for us – the designs rather reflect the taste and style of old times which is quite a treat for hopeless nostalgics. For the opening of the Gourmet

House in 2011, the Szamos family had prepared a big surprise for their guests. It was the first time when the ‘chocolate tree’, which weighs 220 kilos, 2,5 meters tall and has 82 golden chocolate fruits on its branches could be seen in Hungary. It is on view nowadays in the entrance of the pastry shop.

Budapest has a constantly increasing array of clubs, bars, gay-friendly restaurants, saunas, cruising areas and drag shows, as well as underground and mainstream parties. PUBLIC TRANSPORT

PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN BUDAPEST

Running through all of the major tourist areas of the city, public transport in Budapest is one of the most efficient and inexpensive systems of Europe. It is definitely the best internal travel option you can choose for your visit.

FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE CITY CENTER

The city center can be easily accessed by various means from Budapest Airport Terminal. A new direct shuttle bus 100E operates every 20 minutes between Liszt Ferenc International Airport and DeĂĄk Ferenc tĂŠr in the city center. The special Airport Shuttle bus single ticket required for each trip costs 900 Hungarian forints.

TICKETS, TRAVEL CARDS AND PASSES One of the most important things about tickets (except for suburban railway, boat and ferry tickets) is that they need to be validated by stamping or punching prior to the start of travel on metro lines M1, M2, M3 and M4, on other vehicles immediately after boarding or departure. Boat and ferry tickets are validated by the crew while suburban railway extension tickets require no validation after purchase; the same goes for travel cards and passes which allow unlimited trips within the indicated validity period. 56

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The validating machines located at the entrance of metro stations stamp the starting time of your trip onto your ticket. Trams, trolleybuses, buses and suburban railway trains have two types of validators: 1. Red, manual validators Please insert your ticket into the opening on top and punch it by pulling the black frame of the slot towards you. 2. The orange- or yellowcoloured electric devices Please insert your ticket into the opening on the front for automatic validation. A light indicates on the front if the machine is operational (green is the good one, obviously). Single tickets entitle passengers to one uninterrupted trip on the whole length of the line, but on the suburban railways only within the city boundaries. With the exception of traveling on the metro network, single tickets do not allow changes between lines. Tickets are valid for 80 minutes (120 minutes on night services) after stamping. You can purchase tickets, travel cards and passes at BKK customer service centers, ticket offices and ticket vending machines. TVMs are easy to use as they feature touchscreens and multilingual menu systems. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT, GO TO BKK.HU/EN OR FUTAR.BKK.HU Source: Budapesti Közlekedési Központ • www.bkk.hu

GETTING AROUND IN BUDAPEST

If you decide to take a taxi from the airport or you just want to get around a bit more comfortably, be careful to only use the services of licensed Budapest taxis. They are always yellow with a checkered stripe on the side and a ’Licensed Budapest taxi’ statement. Their unified prices are written both on the outside and the inside of the car. They accept all major credit and debit cards besides cash.

GETTING OUT OF THE CITY

There are three main railway stations (terminals) in Budapest: Keleti (Eastern) and Nyugati (Western) Railway Stations in Pest and Déli (Southern) Railway Station in Buda. All of them can be easily reached by Metro lines. If you prefer to travel by bus, Népliget (a station of Metro line 3) is the main thoroughfare for both domestic and international bus lines. Domestic tickets can be purchased from TVMs or ticket offices and also directly from bus drivers. International tickets need to be booked in advance.
