MARCH Politics and play Pasties and panties may be sold out all over town on Saturday, Aug 25, when queer women of every creed gather for this year’s Dyke March. Be you femme, butch or trans, all are welcome to fly the feminine freak flag. Both a celebration and a protest, the Capital Pride Dyke March has rubbed some uptight Ottawans the wrong way in the past while rubbing most queers in exactly the right way. The often scantily clad women who participate want to raise awareness for queer women’s causes in a creative, counterculture fashion. The procession starts at 1pm at the Human Rights Monument, at Elgin and Lisgar streets, and ends with an afterparty, from 2pm onwards, at Dundonald Park that will feature live entertainment and tasty, free food.

CLOSE UP
Parade POWER Taking it to the streets Be sure to get a good seat for this year’s main event. The Capital Pride parade kicks off Sunday, Aug 26 at 1pm. The queer convoy will leave from the Garden of the Provinces on Wellington St and culminate at Ottawa City Hall. This year’s grand marshal, T Eileen Murphy, has been a dedicated activist for 40 years, and Capital Pride chair Loresa Novy says the board is overjoyed to honour a woman who has been so intrinsic to the community. Spectators will be treated to a visual feast as parade participants vie for the title of Best Float. Novy hopes the intimate route down Laurier Ave will harness the energy of the crowds watching from the sidelines. “It will be a very powerful experience,” she predicts.
CAPITAL PRIDE PARADE Sun, Aug 26, 1pm Begins at the Garden of the Provinces, Sparks and Wellington streets capitalpride.ca For the parade route, see our map on pages 8 and 9.
