La Cubana brings new flavours to Roncesvalles

Serafin LaRiviere Photos by Adam Coish

I think I’ve figured out why the United States boycotted Cuba for so long. I am now convinced it wasn’t about politics or missiles or even revenge for their beloved Lucy, whose quest for fame was forever thwarted by a cranky Cuban hubby named Ricky. No, as sure as Ethel was a natural blonde, this whole little tiff has been about just one thing: food envy. Americans do have their own national cuisine, of course (ably represented by greasy burgers and deep-fried sticks of butter), and Mexico’s definitely made an impact on the national palate, but anyone who’s tasted authentic Cuban food will surely never favour the chimichanga again. “I think that some people think of Cuban food as the same as Mexican,” says Victor Coelho, co-owner of La Cubana, a marvellous new eatery on Roncesvalles Avenue. “There certainly are some similarities and some interesting spices that we use, but it’s not always so hot. It’s very, very savoury.” It also relies a little less on the deep fryer, featuring tender cooked meat and seafood that has plenty of zing without sloughing off several layers of your tongue. You’ll still

want to order a nice refreshing mojito, but more as a thirst quencher than urgent fire extinguisher. It’s pouring rain the night I visit La Cubana, but the place is jumping with activity. Nearly every table is taken in this cool space with a retro diner feel, and there’s a nice buzz of conversation that adds to the homey feel without being intrusive. The walls are a pale-green tile, with white-and-red menu boards that give a Cuban feel without breaking out the maracas. Tasteful, but with definite personality.

La Cubana’s menu may feel on the small side, but it offers such a variety of tastes and textures that nothing seems missing.

10  Xtra Living › The best of Gay & Lesbian Toronto

Our server is, well, drop-dead gorgeous, all twinkling eyes and nicely trimmed beard. But that didn’t affect my honest and straightforward evaluation of the food. Much. In fact, nearly everything my dining companion and I sampled was startlingly good. I’d never tried authentic Cuban food before, expecting it to be sort of an upmarket Taco Bell, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover a whole new flavour of Spanish cuisine. We start with cod croquetas, little fried wonders that may have ruined crab cakes for me. Much more flavourful and filling than their shellfish cousins, these babies could easily make a meal in and of themselves if you toss in a salad. The tostones rellenos/beef picadillo makes a nice follow-up: spicy but not painful, with a fruity, refreshing undertone. We follow these with the highly recommended habanero-glazed fried squid, incredibly tender and crackling with a light breaded coating. A little less successful are the yuca fritas, which are dense and kind of hard to eat — think potato wedges with the gravity of Jupiter and you’ll get an inkling of how these hit your stomach. Nice lemony sauce, though. A return visit for lunch is just as satisfying. The black bean soup is rich and full-bodied, and the pressed Cubano sandwich is to die for. I could easily eat one of these every week, the tender pork spiced so perfectly and housed in bread baked fresh on the premises.

Above: La Cubana staff members Jason Mclaren and Leah Marshall Hannon. Left: The walls are a pale-green tile, with white-and-red menu boards that give a Cuban feel without breaking out the maracas.

The desserts are simple but decadent. We opt for the key lime pie and the chocolate mousse, both served in small chilled jars. Cubana’s signature doughnuts, served still sizzling, are perfect when dipped into the fluffy mousse. La Cubana’s menu may feel on the small side, but it offers such a variety of tastes and textures that nothing seems missing. Each element complements the others beautifully, with no flavour clashes. This carefully planned selection isn’t surprising, given that Coelho and his wife, chef Corrina Mozo, already own the successful Delux, a tasty French bistro over at 92 Ossington Ave. “Corinna has been working on this for many years, since she worked as a chef in Massachusetts,” Coelho says. “That was the first place she incorporated her Cuban heritage into designing a menu. Then we had the Cuban brunch at Delux on weekends, before deciding to open up here. It’s something that’s really close to her, offering the food from her own heritage to others.” La Cubana is located at 392 Roncesvalles Ave.

STOREFRONT

When Ikea doe  The design duo at JM&Sons is making waves in Toronto’s furniture scene Serafin LaRiviere There’s a lot to love about Ikea. If you’re a student living on the cheap, or if, like me, you want a kitchen re-do that doesn’t cost the earth, then Sweden’s most famous expat is definitely the place to go. But let’s face it: their furniture is, well, crap. It’s cheaply made, looks dated in a few short years and each piece lasts about twice as long as it takes to put the damn thing together. On the other end of the spectrum are those designer pieces that look fantastic, are solidly made and, oh yes, will set you back several months’ pay to get something half-decent to cushion your overworked ass. But thanks to the surging popularity of reclaimed and repurposed furniture, there is a vast spectrum of quality, affordable home furnishings that don’t look like they came flat-packed in cardboard. JM&Sons arrived on the furniture scene just a few months ago but has quickly made a name for itself with a respectable line that embraces both practicality and beauty. Surprisingly, partners Mackenzie Duncan and Junior Ayotte originally had no intention of going into business when they started designing and building furniture in their spare time. “We did it for ourselves at first,” Ayotte says. “Then friends would come over and start commenting on what they saw, asking if we sold pieces. It sort of grew from there.” Ayotte’s background is in finance, though his fashion-industry parents nurtured their son’s love of design in their small-town Quebec home. It was during his studies at McGill

that he began to indulge his more artistic side. “I was going into banking, but there’d always been that void in my life. So while I was doing my MBA, I got that flame that I wanted through design and furniture.” For Duncan, a professional photographer based in New York, the excitement of designing for others has quickly become a passion. He’s toying with plans to take on the welding aspect of JM&Sons’ production, something the design duo currently outsources to a local welder. But the real fun comes in collaboration. “We bounce ideas off each other all the time,” Duncan says. “It was a bit of a surprise when the turning point came, when our friends

14  Xtra Living › The best of Gay & Lesbian Toronto

started wanting things. That’s when we thought that what we were making might have an appeal.” The two went about launching their line in innovative ways. Their website is a clean and easy-tonavigate online shop, but they also have taken part in several pop-up sales — including a recent stint inside a shipping container on Dundas Street. Duncan and Ayotte’s aesthetic is a great mesh of found materials and modern lines. The barn boards that make up many of their desks, benches, tables and chairs are frequently from old barns, solid and rich looking in a way found only in old-growth forest wood. The addition of metal bases or accents is subtle, beautifully showcasing

sn’t cut it

the natural form and patina of the wood, giving a timeless yet current feel. Their new lighting line is inspired, with wood bases housing vintage-style bulbs from a bygone era. It’s clean and fresh with an antique feel that eschews fussiness. “Mackenzie and I are pretty strict,” Ayotte says. “We don’t like overly complex things, so everything is very clean lines. “And since we also live in small spaces, it has to be highly functional and scaled for metropolitan homes. Otherwise we’d be designing ninefoot-long dining-room tables, but nobody could afford the space!”

Above: Mackenzie Duncan and Junior Ayotte in their shop. Right, from top: the Camden ($415) is a stackable unit that can be used as shelving or a side table; the Double Decker bench ($795) has a lower shelf for a row of shoes or additional storage; the Russo ($1,450) can be used as storage, a clothes rack or a bench.

Facial boost Dermatology on Bloor’s pros are experts at rejuvenating skin and self-confidence, surgery-free Serafin LaRiviere When I was in my 20s, I was fairly resolved that there was little I could do to forestall the aging process. Sure, there were the various creams and unguents used by my female relatives (my aunt swore by Ivory soap and Oil of Olay), but it was clear that gravity was eventually going to hit my face like a Mack truck. Mercifully, my blossoming middleage is coinciding with advancements in non-surgical skin treatments. My personal favourite is Thermage, which uses radio frequency to tighten, lift and smooth loose or sagging skin. I first tried it 10 years ago, and it hurt like a motherfucker. When I returned for treatment recently, I was surprised by how much more comfortable it was. According to Dr Sam Hanna of Dermatology on Bloor, the technology has really advanced and Thermage now offers Comfort Pulse Technology. There’s virtually no downtime and clients leave the office with an immediate rejuvenated look, though it can take up to six months to see the end result. I can attest to the Hanna’s claim, given the much-improved state of my second chin after only one treatment; 18 months later and I’m able to look down without feeling like I have a fleshy innertube around my neck. Being a redhead, I’m intrigued by their endorsement of IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy for freckles. It also does wonders for age spots, visible vessels and veins, and can reduce fine wrinkles and pores. One of Dermatology on Bloor’s most popular treatments is Liposonix, a non-invasive way to reduce fatty areas and contour the body. Rather than hoovering the chub out surgically, Liposonix uses ultrasound to destroy fat cells. Hanna tell me it’s great for healthy people who are frustrated with trying to lose that last couple of inches in areas like love handles, arms, muffintops and hard-to-exercise areas, like

Café culture in Riverdale It’s easy to stay for more than a quick coffee in these bustling east-end shops Serafin LaRiviere Photos by Adam Coish I don’t drink coffee. I’ve tried it all sorts of ways: creamy, sweet, flavoured, mocha, fruity and even boozy (a particularly useless attempt since I don’t drink alcohol, either), but I still cannot fathom how anyone would choose to imbibe something so bitter and nasty. Then again, Joan Rivers still has a job, so what do I know? With the love of the bean forever eluding me, my assignment to profile Riverdale coffee shops seemed more than a little ironic. What on earth would I write about? Well, for starters, the food. Given my home’s proximity to Starbucks and the Second Cup, I’ve become used to the requisite croissant, banana bread and muffin offerings that are both uninspiring and, generally, stale. Well, my non-caffeinated friends, we have been missing out on a whole new level of delicious when it comes to the freshbaked goods available at some of these independent beaneries.

Mad Dog Café I start out at the Mad Dog Café, located at the corner of Logan Avenue and Gerrard Street. This little jewel lies in a row of vintage storefronts that were the epitome of grime and decline until owner Johnson Yeh bought the building a few years ago. Now they’re cleaned up, with Yeh’s café a welcome haven on this lonely stretch of asphalt. “It was a dump when I bought it,” Yeh says, laughing. “I’ve always been handy, so I did pretty much all the renovating. There was a lot of work to be done, but it turned out pretty good.” Better than good, I’d say. The café is bright and clean, with a wall of garage-door-style windows at the front that open up in warmer months. The colours are natural and neutral, with beautifully aged exposed brick and heritage floors. There are several customers nursing espresso and lattes as I read the menu board in search of some lunch. I’m sorely tempted by the heavenly smelling chili and the

huge turkey baguette being devoured by a lad seated nearby, but I decide to order the Cobb salad, an unexpected find at a place catering to the coffee crowd. I’m not disappointed. The lettuce is crisp and fresh, with perfectly ripened avocado, chopped egg, tender chicken breast and just the right amount of blue cheese. The dressing is light with a touch of tangy sweetness. For dessert, I snag one of the large butter tarts. The sheer size of the thing makes me think it might end up being one of those bready, heavy doorstops that look great but hit your stomach like a brick. Instead, it is feather-light and flakey, the kind of pastry you make by hand, with chilled butter, ice cubes, patient hands and the occasional act of god. Yeh does the cooking himself, often leaving the front of house serving to a cast of, frankly, beautiful male and female staff. This may be where Abercrombie & Fitch

models come to pay for college. Yeh and his workers clearly get on like a house on fire; they tease each other, and there’s a lot of smiling and laughing in the professional yet laid-back atmosphere. “I used to be in corporate work,” Yeh says. “It’s so very structured, but this is more fun. I really like cooking and being around people. Even with my staff, I’m not like a boss. We all work together.” The switch from corporate to coffee life was quite dramatic for this Taiwanese-born Canadian. But Yeh grew up in the neighbourhood and food played an important role in his family, so he feels right at home behind the counter. “My grandma would take me to the market,” he remembers. “She’d help out with the neighbours, and we spent so much time together cooking. They were very special times for me. And who knew you could make a living out of it?” Mad Dog Café is located at 817 Gerrard St E. April–Sept 2014

The Rooster Coffee House Snuggled in a cozy bend of Broadview just across from Riverdale Park, The Rooster is one of those cafés that always seem to be bustling. It’s packed to the rafters the afternoon I visit. Hipsters, students and young moms lounge in the comfy leather chairs or gather around the massive harvest table, slurping from steamy cups and chatting. Classic Canadian music plays overhead (Neil Young and Burton Cummings), and the staff is friendly and solicitous. I’m not rushed to a decision, despite the many people clamouring at the counter, and when I finally decide on a mug of hot chocolate, I am delighted to be asked if I’d like it

with or without marshmallows. Just like mom used to make, but without the shame and vitriol. I perch at a long, natural-timber counter and people-watch. It’s a snug little place, with lots of rustic, homey touches and a friendly neighbourhood atmosphere. The hot chocolate is perfect: rich, thick and frothy without being overly sweet. I nab a fresh-baked cookie on the way out and immediately return for one more. If oatmeal raisin had tasted like this when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have sucked back a metric ton of Oreos before adolescence. The Rooster Coffee House is located at 479 Broadview Ave.

Riverdale Perk My last stop is the Riverdale Perk, located smack dab in the middle of what appears to be mostly residential houses. Where the Mad Dog has its urban cool and The Rooster its rustic hominess, this place feels like a cozy old bookstore, with rich dark walls and a quiet ambiance. Still full from my lunch and hot chocolate, I order some lemon herbal tea while spying on my neighbours’ lunches. Expecting a standard tea bag floating in yellowed water, I am pleasantly surprised by the delicate sachet that arrives, cleverly looped around a wooden stir stick so it sits neatly in the hot water. The tea has a beautiful fragrance and a clean, strong lemon flavour that makes Celestial Seasons taste like bathwater in comparison. I’m so enchanted by this attention to detail that I end up ordering the same soup as the universitystudent-type guy next to me. It’s an intriguing blend of butternut squash with spices that bring out the sweetness while adding a nice touch of heat. The pastries are made on the premises, light as air and fragrant. I bite into a citrus confection, completing my lemon-filled trip with a healthy dose of cake and icing. The soups are also made in-house and feature exotic creations like parsnip, apple and cheddar or garbanzo beans and eggplant stew — the perfect light meal while reading or browsing the web. Given its focus on family life, it’s not surprising that Riverdale’s cafés seem child- and even pet-friendly. There’s certainly a less-hurried vibe to these places, with nary a raised eyebrow at customers who linger over a single coffee while indulging in free WiFi. Something to think about the next time you’re being circled by table vultures at Starbucks. Riverdale Perk is located at 633 Logan Ave.

Perusing Pentimento John Rait’s Queen East gallery is an established space for up-and-coming artists Serafin LaRiviere Toronto’s west end has long boasted some of the city’s hippest art galleries, lending a patina of urban sophistication to an area that now epitomizes cutting-edge cool. But gentrification’s easterly march is sowing a whole new crop of exciting spaces. Pentimento Gallery is one of the more established of these, having created a respected and eclectic presence at its über-chic Queen Street East location. “I purposefully put myself at the other end of the city,” owner John Rait says. “I really believe you shouldn’t need to take a day trip to see good art. You should be able to see it in your own neighbourhood.” Rait originally had no thought of founding a gallery, in his Leslieville neighbourhood or otherwise. His interest in art was largely as an appreciative observer, with a latent interest in photography that had been relegated to part-time hobby status. “My path is an unusual one to get here,” he says. “I started out as a competitive figure skater and world professional champion in ice dancing in 1980. At that point, TV had

discovered they could make money out of figure skating, so there was quite a lot of work.” Performing alongside stars like Gene Kelly and Toller Cranston, Rait gradually became interested in the administrative side of the arts. He segued into a career of casting direction before ultimately moving on to talent management, at one point representing the internationally acclaimed Canadian actor Sandra Oh. As his planned retirement grew closer, Rait realized he still needed an outlet for his artistic passion. “I had taken up photography for myself, and some of the actors I knew asked me to take headshots,” he says. “I rented this studio, essentially, to take headshots and just do my own work. Opening the art gallery was a way to keep my own learning curve going, learning about the art scene, what sells, what doesn’t. It was really a fun venture for me.” Certainly one of the most rewarding aspects of Pentimento’s mandate is the discovery and showcasing of up-and-coming artists on its crisp, white walls. “The excitement for me is having the learning curve of working with emerging artists and being part

30  Xtra Living › The best of Gay & Lesbian Toronto

of their careers as they grow,” Rait says. “Look at somebody like Troy Brooks, who is one of my bestselling artists. He was chosen to be a part of the Church Street WorldPride Mural Project. It’s been exciting to see someone like him, launch him and watch him move forward in the scene.” This role of mentor sits comfortably with Rait, and he recalls with affection the professionals who guided his own career through its varied and frequently glamorous path. “Working with people like Toller and Chita Rivera, watching Baryshnikov record The Nutcracker ballet, and being in the television studio while Joyce Davidson was just down the hall interviewing Gloria Swanson was an incredible experience for me,” he says. “As a young man, having access to these people, to be able to ask them questions and watch them work, was really stimulating. “Seeing that now, at age 60, while I watch the young artists emerging, is a pretty great life, I think.” Pentimento Gallery is located at 1164 Queen St E. See pentimento.ca for events and exhibitions.

Neighbourhood

The allure of Kensington Mar A day spent wandering through this beloved neighbourhood provides sustenance for the soul Serafin LaRiviere Photos by N Maxwell Lander In a city that gleefully plunks glass and metal behemoths on top of its dwindling historical buildings, Toronto’s Kensington Market is a refreshing break from the banality of modern development. These cramped, slightly grungy lanes must surely be anathema to slick urbanites, hungry for antiseptic order and sameness. But Kensington’s charm lies snuggly in its pokey alleys, flamboyant graffiti and a jumble of shops that range from old-school ethnic to cutting-edge hipster. The market’s streets are crammed with parked cars and filled with pedestrians who seem to walk anywhere but on the actual sidewalks. Add a flock of cyclists rocketing through at breakneck speeds and you’d think disastrous chaos was only moments away. But somehow it all works. Juno Award–winning saxophonist (and mayoral candidate) Richard Underhill has lived in the Market for 14 years and loves the area’s character and close-knit community. “I really gravitated towards here because I was originally from a small town,” Underhill says. “Kensington is a small community within a big city, and I immediately felt at home. I think what it does best is respect the individual and allow you to just be you.” It also provides some of the freshest food available downtown, along with a collection of coffee shops, restaurants and goods that are as varied as they are affordable. Here are some of our favourites.

Pancho’s Bakery

34  Xtra Living › The best of Gay & Lesbian Toronto

rket If I don’t have pie, I shall surely die There are a few great bakeries in Kensington, including My Market Bakery (184 Baldwin St), which offers a nice range of baked goods, and Pancho’s Bakery (214 Augusta Ave), famous for its churros (basically a deep-fried Latin American choux pastry with delectable fillings). But if you want pie — and I mean truly delicious, authentically homemade pie — there is simply no place better than Wanda’s Pie in the Sky (287 Augusta Ave). These golden beauties are a world away from the overly sweet, mass-produced discs you’ll find at the grocery store. The coconut cream pie is a revelation, while the sour cherry pie will make your lips pucker and your tummy happy. Wanda’s serves great soups and sandwiches as well, but they’re merely the opening act for the show-stopping desserts.

Kensington is truly a bikecentric neighbourhood. Here you can ride them, buy them, have them repaired or just wax enthusiastic about the marvels of bipedal locomotion. There are several vendors in the Market, but certainly the largest and best known is Bikes on Wheels (309 Augusta Ave). What started out in 1994 as a tiny co-op business is now a veritable showroom of all things bicycle, the go-to place for both the casual cyclist and hard-core enthusiasts.

Even before its decriminalization, marijuana was an out-and-proud resident of Kensington Market. It’s almost impossible to wander these lanes without catching a whiff from a nearby spliff, courtesy of official purveyors like Hot Box Café and Roach-O-Rama (204 Augusta Ave) or any number of wandering freelancers. On the day I tour the Market, I am offered pot twice, most memorably by a cheerful Haitian guy tooling around on a moped. He’s gracious in the face of my polite demurral, telling me that he thinks I have nice lips, “but not in a gay way,” before speeding away. I’m left bemused but strangely flattered.

Walmart, Kensington-style Okay, so it’s actually nothing like the great Satan of cheap retail, but the Blue Banana Market (250 Augusta Ave) is the closest thing to a department store in Kensington. Row upon row of housewares, kitchenwares, clothing, treats and just plain fun stuff pack this huge interior space, giving it a colourful kitschy look without the tackiness of its corporate cousin. Each section is rented out to local craftspeople and producers, so there’s an ever-changing stream of interesting products. Co-owner Sylvain Brissonnet at Le Kensington Bistro

Tongue and eggs, please Le Kensington Bistro (256 Augusta Ave) is a true gem. Owned by childhood friends Jean-Charles Dupoire and Sylvain Brissonnet, this intimate French boîte offers a menu straight from France, with a few surprises thrown in. The wild-mushroom risotto is very tasty and the rotisserie chicken divine, but for a real treat, try the bistro’s brunch menu: the croque-monsieur sandwich features beef tongue and Gruyère smothered in béchamel sauce, while the boudin noir’s black pudding sausage, caramelized apples and scrambled egg offer a delicious take on a classic farmer’s breakfast. The best part of Kensington is truly just strolling its streets. You may not need anything from the inexplicable number of army surplus stores or the countless outdoor bulk bins of dried beans, but it all adds to a vibe that makes the outing equal parts shopping and sightseeing. For such a small area — just a few blocks, really — Kensington offers hours of sustenance for both body and soul.
