We didn’t know which stories we’d find out there that weekend. But we did know that anything can, and does, happen during a six-hour parade. not. It wasn’t as if we wouldn’t be able to access the parade at all — we just wouldn’t be able to move freely among the participants. But stories do not present themselves neatly where reporters happen to be gathered. Only by immersing yourself in the crowd, watching for new and familiar faces and listening for interesting conversations, do you get to the heart of Pride — and our community’s stories. Take, for example, the trans marches that took place on June 27. Two made their way down Yonge Street, one officially affiliated with WorldPride and

The size and length of the parade, plus the extreme delay aggravated by the heat, had the most impact on the community groups who were waiting at the very end. I was marching with a group that supports LGBTQ+ people with disabilities. Our members were so excited to be part of the parade, but when we finally started to move down Yonge Street, it was already past 5pm, and we couldn’t help but feel that we were simply being rushed down the route to get it over with. Why is it that grassroots and community organizations are placed toward the back as wealthy (largely heteronormative) businesses, corporations and politicians march at the front, getting all the praise and media attention? Why is it okay to make people with disabilities wait for over two hours in the sun? I’m sorry to say this, but it feels like Pride Toronto has become a big, profit-driven corporation that doesn’t care about the little guy and those who are doing the actual frontline work serving the most vulnerable in our community. The Pride parade needs to be drastically scaled back [“WorldPride Parade Lasts Nearly Six Hours in Intense Heat,” dailyxtra.com, June 29]. Firstly, there is way too much overrepresentation from the public service, like the many various police forces and labour unions. It’s great these people want to participate, but they take up at least an hour of parade time and they aren’t the least bit exciting to an audience. It’s not a Labour Day parade. In fact, there was a lot of “gay” missing from what was once a “gay pride” parade. Secondly, let’s try to pick up the pace. There were so many long gaps that really killed the momentum. It’s fine that they allow the College streetcars to cross, but that shouldn’t have any impact if they had a steady pace.

WorldPride: size matters

While most people were sleeping or making their way home from the bars on the morning of June 29 — the day of the WorldPride parade — I was on my way to catch the streetcar to the Xtra offices when I got a text from my editor. “Can you write a quick story on Pride Toronto’s decision to bar reporters from the parade route?” it said. Fewer than 24 hours earlier, Xtra and the other 200-odd accredited media outlets covering WorldPride had been notified that we would be restricted to certain areas along the parade route, a change from previous years where media crews were free to mingle among the marchers. The casual observer might wonder what difference it makes whether journalists are with the marchers or
one not. If we had just interviewed the organizers and stayed out of the march, the story would have been about a division in the community. But by talking to people in the march, we could tease out the complexities of the story. Every person there chose to be in one of the two marches for their own particular reasons, some unrelated to the politics at play. Participants in this year’s unprecedented Pride parade similarly brought their own reasons and stories to Yonge Street, both in celebration and in protest. One group marched the length of the parade route objecting to the corporatization of Pride. Another carried signs that said “#NotJustTrojans,” demonstrating against Pride’s exclusive contract with just one condom brand. Some of these stories were predictable, others unexpected. We didn’t know which stories we’d find out there that weekend. But we did know that anything can, and does, happen during a six-hour parade. That’s why I found myself calling Pride Toronto’s public relations team, and news desks around the city, while on a College streetcar headed east to our office just hours before the parade, trying to piece together the parameters and rationale for the media restrictions. Our concerns would turn out to be for naught. The restrictions were inconsistently enforced at best, a fact that became clear as I walked up and down the length of the route, interviewing people and snapping photos the whole way. But questioning the restrictions so that we could record your stories is part of Xtra’s commitment to connecting with the communities we’re here to serve. We want to hear your expressions of pride, protest and celebration, however complicated and messy they may be. We don’t want to stand behind a designated media gate and wait for your stories to come to us. We want to immerse ourselves in your pride.

It's always nice to see a cross-section of average people representing the gay community marching in these parades — along with their parents! But what was needed was much more spectacle, especially considering this was WorldPride! KEVIN BROWN DAILYXTRA.COM
Supermarket cruising I think it’s good if young gay men cruise each other while shopping at the Loblaws at Maple Leaf Gardens [“Cleanup, Aisle Two,” dailyxtra.com, July 4]. Loblaws is certainly a more welcoming, positive environment than other establishments on Church Street. For example, at Loblaws a young gay man is less likely to experience the soul-destroying depression that one gets by entering a dingy, dilapidated bar on Church Street. BRENT S DAILYXTRA.COM

Asexuality at Pride Part of me wants to ask why this was even a question [“Asexuality Conference Belongs at WorldPride, Says Organizer,” dailyxtra.com, June 27]. But the rest of me balks at the word “belongs.” There’s that sense of ownership or disownership, again. That’s the problem with colonial or umbrella-style activism: we either have to belong or we have to go away because we don’t belong. And if we do belong, then someone else gets to define us and tell us what we need. Trans people have seen this for decades. Don’t get me wrong: I believe in solidarity. But solidarity doesn’t require a mainstreaming of purpose or to have homogenous activism. Solidarity ideally recognizes that we are standing in unison with unique individuals who are not necessarily identical to us, but who we recognize common cause with and choose to support, anyway. Why is this such a tall order? It’s not like LGB activism is fighting from behind and can’t afford to have anything more to be concerned about. MERCEDES ALLEN DAILYXTRA.COM

With more than 12,000 marchers and 300 floats, Toronto’s WorldPride parade lasted almost six hours June 29 — double the length and size of last year’s event. But despite the length, the heat and the humidity, spirits remained high throughout most of the parade, with both local and international contingents marching, dancing and, on a few occasions, roller-skating down Yonge Street. Toronto mayoral candidate Olivia Chow, who has marched in the Pride parade for more than 30 years, told Xtra that it was the largest she has ever seen. MORE AT DAILYXTRA.COM
“It’s amazing the number of people here,” she said, as people yelled greetings at her from the crowd. “It’s just phenomenal.” Likewise, fellow candidate John Tory was thrilled with the turnout. “It’s a celebration of how far we’ve come in Canada,” he said. Missing was Mayor Rob Ford, who returned to the job June 30 after a twomonth stint in rehab. Attending in his stead were at least two Rob Ford imitators who happily high-fived the crowd. “It was rained out at the cottage, so I thought I would pick this year to make it, finally,” quipped one. Thomas Mulcair, leader of the federal official Opposition, got into the spirit of the event with a giant NDP float where volunteers led chants of “Get down with
the NDP — sexy and progressive.” Though Justin Trudeau, leader of the federal Liberal party, had advertised on Grindr that he would be marching in the parade, he reportedly left to attend another engagement after greeting marchers in the staging area on Bloor Street. Newly elected Ontario Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne, however, the first openly gay premier to be elected in Canada, did march in the parade, to applause from the crowd. While Pride has become a campaign stop for some politicians, there were many other political statements made during the march. One group walked the length of the route with a large banner decrying the corporatization of the event. Abuzar Chaudhary, one of the banner bearers, objected to Pride
Toronto “co-opting our communities.” The AIDS Committee of Durham Region (ACDR) continued its protest against Pride Toronto’s exclusive sponsorship agreement with Trojan brand condoms. Mark Hammann, the group’s manager of education services, helped organize the protest after Trojan did not respond to requests to supply his organization with condoms to distribute at the parade. Trojan did eventually provide 3,000 sanctioned condoms for ACDR to give out — all of which were gone before the group hit College Street, Hammann said. He said he finds it unethical to restrict condom distribution to just one brand at Pride. Some political statements were acts of presence and visibility. “There are
lots of bisexuals who don’t know that we are out there,” said Julie Bowring, who marched with the Toronto Bisexual Network. She wants other bisexual people to know that support exists for them in Toronto. Other statements were acts of love: Inspector Barbara McLean, of the Toronto Police Service, marched in the parade holding her partner’s hand. “I couldn’t feel better,” she said of WorldPride. Despite an announcement late June 28 that media would have only restricted access to the parade route and its marchers, many reporters were able to interview the participants and move freely among them. As a result, Xtra reporters were able to meet people like Lexus Jade. Originally from the Caribbean, Jade now lives in Edmonton and travelled here for WorldPride. Dressed as an angel, she said she and the group she was with wanted to spread a simple message: “Pride is for all of us.” To cap off the day, a rainbow appeared in the sky above Toronto after a brief rain shower soaked the postparade celebration, prompting a flurry of appreciative Instagram photos and Twitter posts. Two trans marches share Yonge Street Though some dislike division, turnout seems higher HG WATSON
Crowds lined Yonge Street June 27 in a public display of support for trans people, despite fears of divisions within the community. Two separate trans marches were scheduled to begin at the same time and follow much of the same route down Yonge Street. Organizers of Trans March Toronto, who chose to remain unaffiliated with WorldPride over concerns of commercialization, began their march at George Hislop Park, while the official Trans* Pride March started on Church Street before heading over to the main thoroughfare. (The asterisk indicates that “trans” is an umbrella term referring to all identities within the gender-identity spectrum.) Before the events got underway, people milled between the meeting points for the two marches, some unsure of where they were supposed to start. Others, like Alex Abramovich, one of the honoured individuals at the Trans* Pride March, expressed discomfort with the marches being divided. “There is so much controversy about the two marches,” Abramovich said. “So it’s kind of hard as the person who is grand marshal to get involved in those politics.” In the end, both marches, each with its own police escort, moved along Yonge 10 JULY 10–23, 2014 XTRA!
Street safely, while large crowds cheered them on for long stretches of the route. Trans March Toronto led the way, a decision that Trans* Pride team leader Christin Milloy said was made out of respect. “We respect everyone’s right to march,” she said. “I think it’s fantastic we have two trans marches.” Nicki Ward, the organizer of Trans March Toronto, was happy that the march was a safe and positive experience. She feels the trans community should march when it needs to, regardless of who approves it. “Trans March belongs to trans people first, last and always,” she said. Kevin Beaulieu, the executive director of Pride Toronto, said that ideally, everyone would march together. But he was happy with how smoothly the event went. “The energy is wonderful,” he said. While official Trans* Pride March attendance numbers are not yet available, many participants said they thought this was one of the biggest ever in Toronto. “The growth is just unbelievable,” Milloy said. “It is really great to see all these people marching in solidarity, fighting for the same thing.” For Monica Forrester, another honoured individual at the Trans* Pride March, the marches were an opportunity for trans people to be visible. “It’s a way of showing society that we exist,” she said.
Thousands of women made their way west on Carlton Street from Allan Gardens, then north up Yonge Street for Toronto’s Dyke March June 28, which ended with a rally in George Hislop Park. The route was almost the exact opposite of what it has been in previous years, a change team lead Laura Krahn said was made to reinforce the march’s political and grassroots origins. Groups marching this year included the Ontario Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf, Women’s Health in Women’s Hands, and the Toronto Fierce Femmes, who were this year’s honoured group. Political supporters, including Vancouver East MP Libby Davies, Toronto Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam and Toronto mayoral candidate Olivia Chow were also in attendance to show their support for the women’s community.
“It’s absolutely wonderful to be in a space with all these powerful women,” Chow said. “Yet still, the transgender and transsexual folks have not had their bill pass the Senate, and so there is still work to do.” Sally Salvaterra has been part of the Trans March in the past, but this was her first year joining the Dyke March. “It’s important for the trans people to be more represented and depicted. That way our presence becomes more normalized,” she said. “We become much more accepted.” Body positivity continues to be an important part of the Dyke March, with women of all shapes and sizes celebrating and embracing their differences. For Lauryn Kronick, who marched topless, it was an opportunity to assert the importance of women having autonomy over their bodies. “It’s a way to kind of say, ‘Fuck you’ to cisgendered men who take your photos without consent,” she said.
“I think body positivity is something that is celebrated by any person of any ability, and it’s just really liberating to be topless or even naked if you want to in the streets.” Many people brought their children to the march, including Gabi Trujillo and Inessa Petersen, who brought their four-month-old son, Gabriel, to the rally in Allan Gardens. “We always do the Dyke March,” Petersen said. “It’s important for us to be at Pride with our son because it’s important for him to know that we’re not the only family — he’s not the only one with two moms. “We’re really lucky to be able to be a lesbian couple and have a child and to have support for that,” she said. As the march wound its way through the streets, many women chanted slogans that included “Pride is not enough” and “Let’s get critical; our Pride is political,” reinforcing the grassroots spirit of the march. “Sure, we have things to celebrate,” performer Natalie Nox said, “but we are political. This is a political space — we take the streets, we reclaim them as ours, and that’s why we march.”

Pride bars men’s group from parade CAFE told its work may ‘contravene spirit of Pride’ HG WATSON
Just days before the WorldPride parade, organizers revoked the permit of a local men’s rights group to march because, they said, the group’s work may “contravene the spirit of the mission, vision, and values of Pride Toronto and WorldPride.” Pride Toronto notified the Canadian Association for Equality (CAFE) of its decision by letter the week of June 24. CAFE, whose website says that the organization is committed to achieving equality for all Canadians, has been associated with several controversial events over the last two years. In 2013, the group brought American men’s rights speaker and author Warren Farrell to the University of Toronto for a lecture. Farrell is the author of The Myth of Male Power and Why Men Earn More. The group was also forced to cancel a concert celebrating a holiday dubbed “Equality Day” that was supposed to take place on the Toronto Islands, at Gibraltar Point, on June 1. Artscape, which owns the space at Gibraltar Point, was unaware
of CAFE’s controversial connections until furor over the concert was raised on social media, according to a report in the Toronto Star. Artscape officials asked the group to hold their event elsewhere. Kevin Beaulieu, the executive director of Pride Toronto, told Xtra that concerns about CAFE’s activities were raised in the lead-up to the parade. “A decision had to be made quickly in the interest of the comfort and safety and ability of groups to participate in the parade,” he said. Pride Toronto sparked outrage in 2010 when it attempted to ban Queers Against Israeli Apartheid from marching in the parade. Though the group’s presence remains controversial to some, Pride Toronto eventually relented after furious community members pointed out the fallacy of censoring even unwelcome views in a parade founded on free expression. Eleanor Levine, a CAFE board member and spokesperson, said it’s been misrepresented as an organization that hates women. “We are not anti-women,” she said. “We are absolutely inclusive.” Despite the loss of its permit to march,

The clouds opened at Yonge-Dundas Square during the closing ceremonies June 29, drenching revellers but failing to dampen their spirits. After the downpour a rainbow appeared, arcing over the square where thousands had gathered to celebrate the final day of WorldPride. The 10-day festival wrapped up with a huge outdoor concert that featured performers Cece Peniston, Robin S, Rich Aucoin and Tegan and Sara, who closed off the celebrations with a high-energy set that included their Juno-winning hit “Closer.” As the festivities got underway, the Pride parade was still marching by on Yonge Street, well into its fourth of six hours. When the crowds later poured out of Yonge-Dundas Square to enjoy the late-night festivities and prolong the end of WorldPride for a few more hours, a lone protester stood sullenly, holding a Bible-themed sign and appearing to miss the point spectacularly. — Julie Cruikshank

Face to face with Kathleen Wynne Xtra sits down with Canada’s first elected gay premier POLITICS MARGARET WEBB
Midway through WorldPride celebrations, on Tuesday, June 24, Kathleen Wynne, the first openly gay person elected head of government in Canada, was sworn in as premier of Ontario. In the days following, she made appearances at a number of WorldPride events: The 519’s Starry Night on Thursday, the Pride and Remembrance run on Saturday morning (she did the five kilometres in 31 minutes, 26 seconds) and the parade on Sunday afternoon. In the midst of it all, she took time to sit down with Xtra. Here are some excerpts from that interview. Xtra: First female premier of Ontario, first openly gay premier in Canada, and first openly gay head of state in the entire Commonwealth. This seems to me like an LGBT Obama moment. How do you feel about that? Kathleen Wynne: Well, I’m excited about it. It’s hard, when you’re in it, to think that its impact will be as broad as it probably will be. But I know from the last 16 months having been in this role that there are so many girls and parents who are looking at me and feeling good because it changes the view that they have of what their daughters can do, and for the kids, it changes their view of what’s possible. And that’s a wonderful thing.
Canada’s first elected gay premier doesn’t think she would be leading Ontario’s government today had she not come out and been true to herself.
We both came out in 1991, which was the same year that a seminal Canadian film called Thank God I’m a Lesbian came out. You’re a member of the United Church, I understand. Do you thank God you’re a lesbian?
I do. I thank God that I am who I am. I feel blessed to have had the particular set of circumstances that have led me to be in this office. I believe that coming out helped me to tap into who I really am. There’s a spirituality attached to that, and I’m quite sure that had I not come out, I wouldn’t be the premier of Ontario, because I wouldn’t have been able to tap into my whole being. So I thank God for the opportunity to be who I am. Symbolic gestures: so much of politics seems to be about those little important gestures. With you and Jane on the
campaign trail, how much discussion did you have around how you were going to present your relationship?
Well, we didn’t have much discussion because we’ve been at it quite a long time, so there are norms that we’ve just established. It’s interesting: I was asked about election night and — there was a hug and not a kiss, right? And that was a hard question because I was being asked, “Why not a kiss?” and I have to say that I am who I am. I try not to be defined by those — either public displays of affection or not, whatever particular comfort level Jane and I have with being in public and recognizing that the people that I’m with and that I’m interacting with have a certain comfort level, too. I want everybody to feel that they can interact with me, that there isn’t a barrier, that
we’re not excluding, you know? So we are as affectionate as we choose to be in public, and our relationship is very strong. She was with me every single day on the campaign, and that was a very clear message to people about who we are as a family. We have a publicly funded [Catholic] school board that doesn’t recognize your relationship or your family. How do we move forward on this?
Very intentionally. I have had meetings with the cardinal, before he was the cardinal, because I was minister of education at that time, and he came in and met with me, and I know that there are challenges still. And it’s one of the things that worries me. But it’s also one of the things that we have to accept and we have to push on. I think it’s very good that the Ontario
TANJA-TIZIANA
English Catholic Teachers Association is going to be marching in the Pride parade, despite criticism on that. I think it’s very important that teachers see themselves reflected in their organizations and in our curriculum. So I have been very clear, and our minister of education is very clear, that our equity policies and our legislation that’s in place applies to everyone. So the right for kids to form gay-straight alliances at schools — it’s absolute. We now have to push that and make sure that those schools and those school boards are safe, not just for the kids, but for the adults, and not just for the teachers, but for the parents and for all of the people who are associated with them. The rich, and sexually confusing, traditions of Japanese theatre HISTORY BOYS MICHAEL LYONS
In his book Male Colors: The Construction of Homosexuality in Tokugawa Japan, author Gary Leupp describes a scene from the 1742 kabuki play Narukami Fudo Kitayama Zakura. Danjiro, a rakish ronin — a class of masterless samurai — seeks an audience with a lord. While waiting, he is attended by Hidetaro, a beautiful adolescent who offers him tobacco. They discuss Hidetaro’s martial training and Danjiro, complimenting the youth’s beauty, offers to teach the boy horseback riding; he accepts enthusiastically. The ronin squeezes Hidetaro between his thighs, explaining, “Press tightly against the flanks of your mount, thus,” and continues to suggestively simulate good riding technique. A kiss is rebuked, Hidetaro flees, Danjiro laughs and glibly apologizes to the audience for his “shameful” behaviour. When a woman arrives with tea, Danjiro assaults her with innuendo, playing on slang where “tea” refers to sex with a prostitute. She exits in disgust, and Danjiro turns to the audience, lamenting, “That’s two cups of tea I’ve been denied!” Japan has a long, rich history of homosexuality or, more often, bisexuality, usually with strong pederastic leanings. Hierarchical elder-youth relationships were common in monasteries, between samurai and their apprentices, or among the middle class and sex workers. The misadventures of Danjiro typify the delightful sexual perversity of the kabuki stage, all the more titillating because, no matter what combination of partners, all the roles were played by men. Ironically, kabuki — the written characters that make up the word individually mean “song,” “dance” and “skill” — was founded by Izumo no Okuni, a minor Shinto priestess. She was sent from Izumo to Kyoto to perform sacred dances and songs as a means of soliciting donations. Known for her great beauty and sensuous dancing, Okuni started performing on the dry riverbeds of Kyoto around 1603; she attracted a following of female misfits and prostitutes, to whom she taught her craft. These first actors of kabuki

played both the male and female roles in erotic skits, and they also often sold themselves after performances. This art form became popular in red-light districts, with brothels picking up talented prostitutes and forming allfemale troupes, which became known as onnakabuki. All-male troupes were also popular, especially youth troupes, known as wakashū-kabuki; their actors were just as likely to double as prostitutes. This was at the beginning of the Edo period, during which the Tokugawa shogunate ruled. The military dictatorship’s means of controlling the people was a rigid class system with limited opportunities for social climbing. The shoguns didn’t like the mixture of classes at the popular kabuki performances, from farmers to samurai to royalty, so they banned women from kabuki in 1629, giving rise to the onnagata. Onnagata, Japanese for “womanform,” were heavily made up and intricately dressed male kabuki actors who played all the female roles, speaking in falsetto. Much like drag as we know it today, onnagata represented an impossible fantasy of femininity. The shoguns’ ban did little to stop the thirst of the masses for kabuki performances and their patronage of the
“female” stars. What was between the legs of the performers meant little to the audiences — if anything, androgyny and gender confusion simply provided further titillation — and onnagata were often rented out to clamouring male and female clientele. Onnagata were banned in 1642, replaced by wakashū, adolescent male roles often played by youths, and these were eventually banned as well. The bans on onnagata and wakashū roles were eventually lifted, in 1644 and 1652 respectively, on the condition that actors had to take pains to make themselves less attractive, but this did little to dispel the erotic power of the onnagata. A number of images from kabuki’s heyday depict the infinite erotic combinations the form could afford. A print by 18th-century artist Suzuki Harunobu, for example, shows a man who finds his mistress in bed with an onnagata. Is he filled with murderous anger or disgust? Nope: he climbs into bed with him, fucking the woman while masturbating the other man. Social climbing may have been unheard of in Tokugawa Japan, but kabuki theatre shows how different classes always find ways to come together. History Boys appears in every issue of Xtra. The Hump! tour helps broaden peopleg’s porn horizons.
HOMEMADE HUMPING Phil, from across the office. Katie, who lives next door. Michael, your friend. There are people in all our lives whom we’d love to see on video, naked and acting out their dirty fantasies. And Dan Savage is making it happen. In 2005, the syndicated columnist and co-creator of the It Gets Better Project challenged his Pacific Northwest readers to “get their hands dirty” creating homemade porn. Seeing friends, colleagues and neighbours in amateur porn really struck a chord with people (the dirty beasts!) and the subsequent sold-out audiences resulted in the creation of the annual Hump! festival. With few limits placed on the submissions, the Hump! festival prides itself on representing a wide range of interests, involving people of various orientations and gender identities. Savage says it’s not just an “amateur porn festival,” but a “celebration of sexual diversity.” Nearly a decade after its inception, Savage’s annual mélange of smut is about to hit the road as the Hump! tour. MORE AT DAILYXTRA.COM
Entrants submit five-minute shorts for a chance to win cash prizes. The inaugural tour, which will soon arrive in Vancouver and Toronto, comprises 20 of Savage’s favourites from the recent crop of submissions, as well as some audience picks from over the years. The Hump! tour provides a rare opportunity for people to broaden their porn horizons. “It’s rare for people to watch porn that takes them outside their comfort zones; it’s rare for people to watch porn that, if they were home alone in front of the computer, they wouldn’t choose to click and watch,” Savage says. “At Hump! straight people watch gay porn, vanilla people watch kinky porn, gay people watch lesbian porn. And people laugh, they gasp, sometimes they cover their eyes. But at the end of every film, people clap and cheer.” — Jeremy Willard The Hump! tour is Sat, July 12, 7pm and 9pm, at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, 506 Bloor St W. humptour.com
It’s a good time to be a funny lady. As Melissa McCarthy’s Tammy hits the big screen this summer, the women of yuks have cemented themselves as here to stay and to make you pee yourself laughing. But there have always been funny girls in movies, and Harbourfront Centre can’t wait to show them to you when the sun goes down. Every Wednesday throughout the summer, the Free Flicks: Funny Girls program will host outdoor viewings of funny, female-centric movies. It’s an all-star lineup, from Clueless to Desk Set, capping off with Babs herself in Funny Girl. The movies aren’t limited to those that feature funny female actors; some were chosen because of the women who wrote or directed them. Or in the case of In a World . . . all three conditions were met: the film was written by, directed by and stars the extremely talented Lake Bell. Each showing will be hosted by Toronto’s Norman Wilner, senior film writer for Now magazine. The showcase finishes with an audience choice screening. Voting is open

PUTIN ON THE RITZ The Winter Olympics in Sochi was a creepy affair. The pomp and glitz of an international sports event didn’t change, and certainly didn’t obscure, how cruelly that country treats its queer people, but rather created a sleazy effect; you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. But at least a lipstick-wearin’ pig would be cuter than Putin and his country’s laws. Wrong Note Rusty drew inspiration from the Sochi Olympics for Putin on the Ritz, an act he is performing at the upcoming Toronto Burlesque Festival. “The Olympics tried to dress up and put spit polish on a lot of really awful shit,” Rusty says. “I’m a big fan of visual puns, and the idea [of the act] is to really take the piss out of this really dark and serious thing and show how creepy it is.” Decked out in top hat, tails, white gloves and a Vladimir Putin mask, Rusty wafts onto the stage and prances about to the foppish strains of Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ on the
Ritz,” gradually stripping down to just his hat, socks and mask. His act juxtaposes the vile — Putin’s face — with the glamorous — a frothy classic tune — to create a surreal atmosphere that mirrors that of the Sochi Olympics. However, unlike the Olympics, Rusty’s act has a payoff: he’s dead sexy and his performance concludes with a delicious helping of his breathtakingly smooth ass. The festival includes everything from Rusty’s brand of political commentary to acrobatic stripping to humour. Attendees will also find queer content in performances by Dew Lily, Belle Jumelles, Johnny B Goode, Alexander Mansfield, Percy Katt and Obskyura. — Jeremy Willard

As Patricia Wilson hands me a drink, I pause to take in the space around us. An otherwise straightforward one-bedroom in the heart of the Church-Wellesley Village, Wilson’s apartment is designed with an eye to the nurturing but tough-as-nails persona for which she is famous. “Be careful. I make them stronger than at the bar,” she warns. Towering piles of art books, Marshall amplifiers and other hard-rock artifacts sit alongside rubberized dog toys and a blossoming summer patio where Wilson and her partner enjoy their meals. The juxtaposition between these elements could be jarring, but here it all makes perfect sense. Reclining in an Adirondack chair, she stops midway through a particularly salty tale to call attention to a falcon on the horizon. This is her personal oasis, cobbled together from the disparate influences that make her whole. Whether serving up drinks to partygoers as bar manager at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre or as the lead guitarist in her band, Crackpuppy, Wilson has been a visible presence in Toronto’s LGBT community for well over two decades. Her unapologetic, no-nonsense attitude makes her an easy punk role model, with a middle finger aimed firmly at authority and with any number of stories about alcohol-fuelled benders in many of the city’s most famous rock clubs. Still, beneath the tough exterior lies a benevolence that is incredibly disarming. A selfdescribed spiritual person, she refers to the young Buddies patrons as her “queer kids” and spends a good portion of our time together petting her black Labrador retriever and making jokes about her 60th birthday. “I never thought I’d make fucking 60,” she explains. “Seriously, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’ll be behind the fucking bar at Buddies with an oxygen tank and a fucking walker, ’cause there ain’t no way I get to retire.” The birthday milestone has given Wilson a chance to reflect on her life. And as she opens up about her journey, it is clear that both spiritual and musical components have always been at play — even if their origins are somewhat surprising. She takes a certain pleasure in revealing that growing up in Windsor, she and her siblings MORE AT DAILYXTRA.COM
were encouraged to study classical piano at the nearby Ursuline School of Music, a Roman Catholic conservatory. “All the kids in the family took piano lessons. I think I started playing in Grade 2. You’d go to the convent and play with the nuns. It’s true! Some of us went further — my sister’s a very good visual artist. But she still loves her piano.” The time at the conservatory had a huge impact on Wilson’s development as both an individual and a musician. Still, she isn’t shy in noting the important influence of Beat Generation writers like Allen Ginsberg, William S Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac. In fact, it was in the aftermath of the Beats — and during the burgeoning counterculture of the late 1960s — that Wilson first began experimenting with hallucinogenic drugs. She considers the experience to be revelatory and quit school at 16 to move into what she describes as a “hippie-rock place.” She remembers getting to a point where she was doing LSD daily. “[LSD] is the best drug I’ve ever done in my life. It changed my life. It made me realize how much more we are as human beings . . . Mind you, I was done [with it] by the time I was 19 because it kept giving me the same message. But it made me realize what was important to me.” While the message had a lot to do with Wilson’s evolution as a musician, a central part of it was also an awareness of her identity — something that she had struggled with throughout her young life. And although she acknowledges that gender was inextricably linked to that personal journey, she is hesitant to make her experience be entirely about her transition or transsexuality.
“I mean, maybe I’m just a tranny redneck. It was then that Buddies changed her life. Maybe I don’t like new things. I don’t know. WORLDPRIDE IN PICTURES THE WEDDING
Love is love PHOTOS BY ADAM COISH INTERVIEWS BY JULIE CRUIKSHANK
To ring in WorldPride, more than 100 couples converged on Casa Loma June 26 for a mass same-sex wedding held by the City of Toronto. Many of them were Toronto residents who jumped at the chance to be part of the historic event and get hitched at Casa Loma. Others had travelled from around the globe for the opportunity to marry, particularly if they couldn’t do so legally at home.
N Couples of all ages took advantage of the opportunity to get married, from those whose relationships have stood the test of time . . .
NJohn Freeman and Mark Sloan were affected by the diversity of those who took part. “Everybody coming together; all the religions coming together. It was very nice,” Sloan said. “We’ve been together for 20 years, and we always sort of felt that was enough,” Freeman said. “And yet, as we started planning to be here, it got to be so much more than that. There was a crowd doing the same thing, but at the moment we gave our vows, it was just the two of us.” 22 JULY 10–23, 2014 XTRA!
N Dana Willams and Jennifer Blavignac, together for a year, decided they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to marry in a way that would send a strong message to the international community. “That’s, I think, part of the reason that we decided to get married maybe sooner than we were planning, because it is important.” AN XTRA SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT
N Michael Demers and Jordan Henry hail from Michigan, where same-sex marriage is not yet legal. They came to Toronto to marry after waiting more than eight years. “I’m just excited to be a part of it,” Demers said. “I’m happy that we get to get married along with a bunch of other people and just show that, you know, love is love.” TORONTO’S GAY & LESBIAN NEWS

. . . to younger couples just beginning their lives together.
E Richard Leslett and Colin Gunther always wanted to marry but couldn’t at home in Australia. “We’re very happy to do it here,” Gunther said. “Moreso in Toronto because it’s just an open and free society. We thought Australia was, but coming here and seeing this was just — it was mind-blowing.”
N Dana Murphy and Shannon St Germaine met at a Halloween party and got engaged almost right away. “Short engagement, but definitely the one,” Murphy says. The pair say they hope their marriage will bring good fights and good makeups, and they plan on having children within a few years. “With everything you’ve been through in the past, when you meet that one person and you get that feeling, you know you never want to let them go.” MORE AT DAILYXTRA.COM
N Mae and Michelle Brand have been married for three years. Theirs is the classic story of a couple who met, hated each other, then fell in love. “I thought she was a snob; she thought I was a snob. Secretly, we loved each other.” They had originally planned to marry in Las Vegas with their friends and family but lost a close friend the day before the ceremony. Instead, they married at city hall. “Then when this came up, we thought this would be a really fancy way to get all dressed up and make it special.”

The hitchhiker’s guide to weird America One thing that was really weird and quite lovely — “The Corvette Kid.” He followed you and picked you up twice!
On the road with John Waters in his new book, Carsick
He’s a kid. He knew it was an adventure. It was the beginning of the summer. Why not! What kid wouldn’t do that? A road trip was a completely new experience. You know, I think he just wanted someone new to talk to — a new friend. I liked him and it was funny. We were an odd couple.
IN PRINT SISSYDUDE
Are you still friends? Do you still talk or hang out?
Like Blanche DuBois before him, John Waters must depend on the kindness of strangers in his latest book, Carsick, which chronicles the infamous film director’s imagined and real-life hitchhiking adventures from his hometown of Baltimore to his apartment in San Francisco. Sissydude chatted with Waters about his quirky creation. SISSYDUDE: Why did you choose the three-part route [the “Good Ride”/“Bad Ride” novellas and the factual “Real Ride”] for Carsick? JOHN WATERS: Well, I’ve always written fiction, but never without it being a movie script. In a way I wanted to let my imagination run wild . . . of what could be the best possible drama and adventures I could have and the worst horrible things that could happen. And then just do it. The only thing you can never imagine is the tedium of waiting for a ride. So, I did write the “Good Ride”/“Bad Ride” parts of the book before I left. I always knew I wanted to do this. I wanted the best, the worst and the truth. What’s the difference? How close do they come? I always think the best and the worst about everything and then do it for real. That’s kind of how I live my life. I can’t imagine the tedium of waiting for a ride.
Waiting was tedious. When you’re standing there and it’s day two and no one picks you up for so long you begin to think, “How long is this going to take?” And then you go in your motel room that night and look at your map and realize, “Oh my god, it’s day three. Look at this map; look how much further I have to go.” Some of my favourite stories in the book are in “Good Ride.” I especially love the Edith Massey story [Massey appeared in many of Waters’s films]. I really want to visit that crazy fictional store of hers. Was it a cathartic thing for you to write?
I dream of Edith a lot. I keep having a recurring dream of her. And I don’t usually have recurring dreams. That’s where that came from. I kept dreaming that I’d run into her and that she was alive. If she were alive and hiding out 30 JULY 10–23, 2014 XTRA!
He stayed for about three days at my place after I got back to San Francisco. We went out to eat. We did everything. He came to my Christmas party. Yeah, I’ve seen him a couple of times.
“The kinds of people that pick up hitchhikers are the kind of people I like,” says John Waters. GREG GORMAN
day to day, what would she be doing? I think her story is very, very believable. I also love the Lucas story. I totally have trucker/demolition-derby-dude action fantasies.
I covered a demolition derby once, like 25 years ago. I was in a car but not giving a handjob. I love this line: “I sneak a look over and consider a blowjob, but even I know giving head in the middle of a demolition derby is risky . . . and besides, I don’t know Lucas that well yet.”
I wanted the sex to be funny. And the dark stories — I found them hard to read. I was kind of uncomfortable with them. The true-crimes stuff, the public poo problems.
Diarrhea, that is the worst fear. That would be terrible. I think the most disgusting chapter is the animal rescue one. She’s got a tapeworm coming out of her mouth. The cats are puking. True hell. So what was it like killing yourself?
Well, it was fun. Victims of serial killers, they’re mostly young girls. And there was a gay one who killed gay guys — not [Jeffrey] Dahmer. I forget his name. So I thought, Is there a serial killer that I would be his type? So that’s why I made up one who only kills cult film directors. On your real rides, you seemed to be pleasantly surprised by all the generous strangers who picked you up.
It was touching to me.
Have you kept in touch with anyone else?
The Kansas City couple came to my Baltimore society party with their gay son; the ex-Marine woman had a baby recently and named it partly after me; the preacher’s wife, she met my mother — the ones I stayed in the car the longest. I haven’t heard from the Frackers. I loved all the females in your life helping you out — your sisters and your assistants.
I came to them whining all the time, telling them I might have to drink my own urine. I know they were thinking, “We told you not to do it, stupid.” They were very relieved when it was over. Were you relieved when it was over, or did you kind of want to go back?
No. But when I finally got home to San Francisco and thought about taking a bus and a few times took a cab, I thought, “You bourgeois pig.” You know, what are you doing in a cab, you sissy? So, it was weird to not hitchhike. I had a driver to the airport, first-class ticket and then a driver to come to New York and receive the [Council of Fashion Designers of America] Fashion Awards for Johnny Depp and Rei Kawakubo. So I got back to the way I would prefer to travel. Did you learn anything from this experience at all?
I learned that, 66 years old — still dare yourself to do something, take an adventure. Bring your street cred up. I learned what I always believed: that people will try to help you. The kinds of people that pick up hitchhikers are the kind of people I like. They take chances. They want to meet new people. They like to improvise. They like to hear stories and they like to tell stories. TORONTO’S GAY & LESBIAN NEWS

stardom to the main stage at The 519: Darienne Lake performed with a beautiful Hello Kitty umbrella hood around her coiffed hair at the kickoff to The 519’s Green Space. Starry Night is definitely my favourite event at Pride each year. It’s when all the city folk come out and breathe their last breath together before the craziness comes to town and blows the roof off. 2E Mado DJed Starry Night. She’s a Montreal legend and institution and a fine-ass lady. She’s cut from a cloth that is fast disappearing from our community: bitchy queens who make cunty, offcolour remarks that get the crowd howling with laughter. Seeing her at Pride made me feel like all was right in the world. 3E Vazaleen was one of Will Munro’s famous parties that brought all the best-end queers out of the woodwork for one night of unity and craft drag. Andrew Harwood has been hosting for years, and it’s only fitting that he hosted this year, which was also a fundraiser for queers living with cancer. Also, the glasses-under-the-glasses look is very early Elton John and so haphazard it made me fall into fits of giggles. 4E Dave Munro is Will’s brother and is now a member of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, the band famous for writing the Kids in the Hall theme song. The full circle on this is that Shadowy Men was one of the first bands Munro
and his brother saw in TO when they moved down here from the sticks. Vazaleen was more of a heartwarmer this year than ever before but was a lovely tribute to a man the whole city is still madly in love with in life and death. 5E Travis, Skye and Lucas of The Cliks were out at Vazaleen to show their support. They also played Pride this year, which was great. We have so much incredible talent in the community and the country, and they came out in droves to show the world just what we can do in Tarannah. What a beautiful place we live in. Truly. 6E I dare you to hold back your desire to fuck Inez and Chelsea at Drag King Karaoke. That mama’s boy takes the cake. 7E The Drake did a bold move this year with three floors of A Club Called Rhonda, the outrageous polysexual party out of LA (I know, how did LA take the crown from NYC?) that came to TO for one sexual night of the city’s best outfits. Lexi takes the cake for best pose of Pride weekend for me. Welcome home, dollface. Nice to have you back. 8E Gia darling, way to showcase your Chanel purse by wearing white head to toe, including Rapunzel extensions. And just in case we missed it, she’s pressing it right up to the camera for us to admire. 9E Diva K has nailed so much in this photo — the ’50s throwback glasses; the Godfather tee; high-waisted, late-’80s jeans and braided belt; over-theshoulder baggy button-up — but most of my love is contained in the Afro pick in his cameo. If only I looked this good circa ’89; for most of us it was more like gunt-central than fashion plate. 10E The best party pic of Rhonda goes to Fritz, Gregory and Jeremy, behind the decks at A Club Called Rhonda. I’m into Fritz’s jacket, Gregory’s silver panties and Jeremy’s face. In that order.

Travel Hotel Modera, in Portland, Oregon. AEFA MULHOLLAND
Vintage vacations Airstream trailers, reborn motels and other retro stays AEFA MULHOLLAND
If you’re nostalgic for childhood vacations in travel trailers, caravans or motels but time has tempered your tolerance for campfire fare, cramped quarters and drab, done-in décor, fear not: a dazzling array of dapper, designconscious cabin camps, trailer parks and motels has stepped into the spotlight over the past few years. For a streamlined stay with style, there are now a slew of reconditioned Airstream options from which to choose. The gleaming mid-century marvels have reclaimed their place in the hearts of holiday-makers, from upstate New York to Colorado to Cape Town to the foothills of the Pyrenees in France. With its nine retro 1940s and 1950s trailers, Bisbee, Arizona’s Shady Dell RV Park takes you back to a time when MORE AT DAILYXTRA.COM
the Cold War was still hot and Tupperware was tops. The diminutive coppermining town in the Mule Mountains is unexpectedly LGBT-friendly and has a lively Pride every June. Things also stay firmly with one foot in the ’50s in the Belrepayre Airstream and Retro Trailer Park in Mirepoix, France. Europe’s first such camping creation, the park offers an array of 10 models of Airstreams, ranging from the 1940s to the 1970s. There’s also an aluminum diner and a restaurant/bar with a vinyl-only music policy. For an even hipper take on tin-can tourism, breeze into Berlin’s Huettenpalast, where a cache of quirky cabins and vintage trailers have come home to roost in an old factory in the Neukölln area of the city. More uber-cool urban camping can be found in Cape Town on the rooftop
of the Granddaddy Hotel , where seven Airstreams nestle alongside mailboxes, barbecues and an expanse of AstroTurf. Another option that boasts both cabins and trailers comes courtesy of Kate Pierson, of The B-52s. Kate’s Lazy Meadow motel in Mount Tremper, New York, near Woodstock, adheres to the more-is-more school of décor, with nine rustic, over-thetop suites and five similarly spaced-out Airstream trailers. In Kate’s own words, “You’ll find mind-blowing mid-century modern/space-age/rocket-your-socksoff décor.” And that’s an understatement. It’s co-owned and managed by Kate’s life partner, Monica Coleman. You’ll find plenty more parks farther west. It’s another slice of life in the past lane at Utah’s Shooting Star Drive-In. Eight trailers, including John Wayne’s digs from the set of The Searchers, an Airstream-only drive-in section and
a posse of classic cars from which to watch films from the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s are all on the bill at this eccentric Escalante station. A ccommodations at Astoria’s Sou’wester, in the Pacific Northwest, range from a Silver Streak and a Spartan Manor to a Potato Bug and an African Queen. At Colorado’s Starlite Classic Campground in the Royal Gorge, 45 minutes from Colorado Springs, Winnebagos, Tee Pee trailers and Sportsmen are just some of the constellations of camping quarters. Motels have mutated far from the original utilitarian conformity of the reassuringly similar rooms they were known for in the 1950s. Today’s boutique motels and reborn motor lodges offer distinctly different destinations. A couple of the most memorable mo-
tels are in Portland, Oregon. The Jupiter is a renovated motor inn in the happening Burnside neighbourhood. Offering rooms on the “chill” or “bar patio” sides, depending on your reasons for coming — and your tolerance for noise — the 80-room, pet-friendly place also entices guests with its Doug Fir restaurant and music and club venue. The in-spot frequently hosts local luminaries, including Beth Ditto and Penny Lane. Portland is also home to The Modera, which benefited from a multimillion-dollar midcentury refit in 2008 and is now a luxe haven of impeccable hospitality on the light rail line. North of the border, in Vancouver, the Burrard Hotel opened in 1956. Fifty years later it cast off its rough reputation and morphed into a sleek modern hotel with loaner bikes, gym passes and oodles of attitude. It’s an excellent XTRA! JULY 10–23, 2014 39

address for downtown and gay-village social shenanigans. Elvis, Dean, Marilyn and Frank’s old favourite, Palm Springs, is another time capsule of a town, with its dozens of impeccably restored mid-centurymodern motels, a cool clutch of gay resorts and a stunning backdrop of the 3,000-metre San Jacinto Mountains. So line up the martinis, relive the glory days of this oasis in the desert and avail yourself of the hospitality of super chic moteliers, such as the folks behind the quirky 170-room Ace Hotel & Swim Club, the exquisitely retro Orbit In or the fun Century gay resort. Savannah, Georgia’s funky Thunderbird Motel has budget boutique billets within strolling distance of the 24 lush, Spanish-moss-draped squares that this southern city is famed for. It’s also just a 10-minute saunter from the infamous Club One, the haunt of notorious drag queen Lady Chablis, star of the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Meanwhile, one of the most atmospheric accommodations in LGBTfrequented Rehoboth Beach, in Delaware, is the snappy Crosswinds 40 JULY 10–23, 2014 XTRA!
Motel. Centrally located, contemporary and affordable, it reopened in 1998, and rooms were renovated from top to bottom in 2012. Down south, two divine destinations lure lovers of luxe vintage lodgings. The Belmont Hotel, home to BarBelmont, Smoke Restaurant and fantastic downtown skyline views, in the Bishop Arts District of Dallas, is a favourite with queer travellers and other fashionconscious folks. Austin, Texas’s Hotel San José is a boutique bungalow that opened in the 1930s and now appeals to visiting arts, music and design people. It’s crammed to its groovy gills during South by Southwest. Any time of year, grab a seat at Jo’s coffee shop and watch the action on bustling South Congress. So, whether you fancy a redone retro room on wheels or an old-school roadhouse with every modern trapping, with all these options to choose from, it’s time for a vintage vacation.

Alberta’s two biggest cities have plenty to offer LGBT travellers
Big sky country THINKSTOCK
ROB SALERNO
Calgary There’s more to Calgary than the stereotypical cowboys and oil barons. But if your tastes run to cowboys, you’ll find plenty of those, too. In fact, the classic gay film Brokeback Mountain was filmed here. Still, Cowtown is a thoroughly modern and cosmopolitan city with lots for visitors to enjoy. You won’t have any trouble finding country-western bars in Calgary, but if you want to freshen up your wardrobe with some authentic cowboy gear (or heck, if you want to spice up your love life with some authentic cowboy gear), you’ll find plenty of shops selling cowboy boots, jeans, Stetsons, leather gloves, spurs and everything else you’ll need to rope a cowpoke in the shops on the Stephen Avenue pedestrian mall. You’ll also find the usual shopping mall stores, a good mix of bars and restaurants, and some cheap food trucks. The mall ends at Olympic Plaza, where medal ceremonies for the 1988 Winter Olympics took place. For more fine dining, interesting independent retail options and the bulk of the city’s nightlife, take a stroll along 17th Avenue SW. A more bohemian experience focused on cafés rather than bars can be found in the Kensington neighbourhood north of the Bow River. The Calgary Zoo is a world-class institution that also houses a botanical garden. The Glenbow Museum is the largest in Western Canada, and it focuses on local history with regularly changing art exhibits. But the best museum experience in the region 42 JULY 10–23, 2014 XTRA!
is a 90-minute drive west, near Drumheller: the Royal Tyrrell Museum, which houses a magnificent collection of more than 100,000 dinosaur fossil specimens that were found in the Alberta Badlands. If you’re visiting in the winter, it’s worth making a trip to Canada Olympic Park. The facility is open year-round for training and recreation in various sports, but on certain days in the winter, the bobsled and luge track is open for visitors. It’s one of only two bobsled tracks in Canada. Sign a waiver and hit the ice — if you dare! It’s also fun to watch athletes train on the ski-jump and half-pipe courses. Calgary’s gay nightlife scene includes the old stalwart Twisted Element, which hosts drag performances, amateur strip nights and popular dance parties on the weekends. There’s also the Texas Lounge, a small basement bar that’s re-
ally more like the lobby of a bathhouse, which you enter through a rear parking lot off 17th Avenue. The local scene magazine is the monthly GayCalgary and Edmonton, which has up-to-date event listings. But if you’re looking for your Jack Twist, your best bet is at Calgary’s premier gay summer event, the Canadian Rockies International Rodeo — better known as the gay rodeo. The five-day event takes place in nearby Strathmore and features all the ridin’, ropin’ and racin’ you could wish for. Sure, it’s somewhat overshadowed by the annual Calgary Stampede, which is the city’s premier event and one of the biggest rodeos in the world. But it’s nowhere near as fabulous. Pride 2014 celebrations in Calgary take place Aug 22 through Sept 1. Visit pridecalgary.ca for more information.

Top, the Calgary skyline. Above, the pirate ship inside the West Edmonton Mall.
Edmonton If Calgary is Canada’s Dallas, then Edmonton is the Great White North’s Austin — a hip, artsy and active city with a strong pioneering spirit not quite sullied by its great oil wealth. With a strong arts scene, shopping that could keep you busy for days, and a thriving gay and lesbian scene, there’s plenty to keep visitors busy in Edmonton. Start with a stroll down Whyte Avenue in the Old Strathcona neighbourhood. This part of town features lots of quirky independent shops, nice restaurants and a bar and pub scene frequented mostly by a college-aged crowd. It can get pretty rowdy on weekend nights. On the north side of the river lies the downtown core, thick with office towers and government buildings. The sprawling grounds of the Alberta Legislature make for a pleasant stroll, and the massive, colonial-style building itself is quite beautiful. At night the grounds are a popular spot for gay cruising and for straight teenagers to sneak off and make out, but be warned — police patrol the area frequently. The North Saskatchewan River valley is the largest urban parkland in North America — larger than 20 Central Parks. The valley cuts deeply through the city along a meandering path, and it’s lined with recreational trails, park spaces, golf courses and wildlife areas. Included in the river valley system are the four glass pyramids of the Muttart Conservatory (a biosphere hosting plants in different environments), the Edmonton Valley Zoo and the costumed historical experience at Fort Edmonton Park. In the summer months, you can cross the valley in the High Level Bridge streetcar
for some excellent views. At night, you can take in a fine show at the Citadel Theatre or the new Winspear Centre for Music. The Varscona Theatre in Old Strathcona has been hosting the weekly drag soap opera Die-Nasty for more than 20 years — it’s an Edmonton institution frequented not only by the gays. The gay scene, such as it exists in Edmonton, is centred on Jasper Avenue in downtown. The combo pub/ dance club Woodys/Buddy’s attracts a mixed, casual crowd, while the more stylish dance club is the upstart Flash nightclub. Weekly listings can be found in the local free magazine GayCalgary and Edmonton. Finally, no trip to Edmonton can be considered complete without a stop at the massive West Edmonton Mall. The West Eddie (as the locals call it) was long the biggest mall in the world but now must settle for being the biggest mall in North America. You could easily spend days exploring it — it has a built-in hotel for when you get tuckered out. There’s also an indoor water park, a petting zoo, cinema, roller coasters, skating rink, mini golf, two night clubs, a comedy club, several large restaurants, indoor skate park, 24-hour gym, dinner theatre and a billiards and arcade complex. Among the more than 800 shops are several Edmonton-exclusive shops and the only Simons store outside of Quebec. Edmonton celebrated Pride in early June. Check edmontonpride.ca for details for 2015. Eight great summer events for women From Greek island antics to steamy Florida fiestas AEFA MULHOLLAND
Summer has ďŹ nally hit and things are heating up. On top of what’s on offer during all the Pride celebrations, there’s a captivating collection of women’s events happening around the world.
Girl Splash Provincetown, Massachusetts July 22–26 provincetownforwomen.com
Just one of ďŹ ve women’s events that happen in this Cape Cod town each year, Girl Splash has a hectic calendar of festivities lined up, from the opening kickoff and Friday’s tea dance and deck party, all the way to the closing White Party on the Sunday night. Spend your days exploring the dunes, schmoozing on a schooner, going on an all-women’s whale watch, or mingling with the many, many women to be found roaming the colourful streets of P’town, and spend your nights at a bonďŹ re in the dunes or on the danceoor.
LaDIYfest Berlin, Aug 1–3 ladyfest.net
A spinoff from the original LadyFest events, this alternative women’s and trans festival takes an open-to-all approach to entertainment. Last year’s event started off with a vegan barbecue at the Tempelhofer Feld, an abandoned airport, where barbecue sites are tucked between runways. Along with the ďŹ lm nights, concerts, parties and live music, this fest stands out with options that include drumming lessons and haircuts. Cutting edge, indeed.
Lesbomonde Reunion Montreal, Aug 2 diverscite.org
Following up on 2013’s event, arguably the best ladies’ beach party in Canada, held on the sands of the St Lawrence River, this year Lesbomonde covers up and heads indoors for this super-hot party on the islands of the St Lawrence. NYC’s DJ Whitney Day is the headliner.
Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival Hart, Michigan, Aug 5–10 michfest.com
Depending on the weather, Michigan can be equal parts mud and music, but the six-day extravaganza is always an amazing experience that attracts nearly 10,000 women to 650 wooded acres in the state’s northwest. Affinity groups abound, with activities and workshops for pretty much any interest you can dream up. Daytime programming runs to music and comedy, early evening acts include theatre and dinnertime dramatics, while the night stage boasts the big draws; this year’s heroines include Elvira Kurt, Bitch and Melissa Ferrick.
FemiFest 2014 London, Aug 30 & 31 femifest2014.com
Women-only, feminist antics take the podium at this political festival in East London. Open to all women-identiďŹ ed people raised as girls, events are aimed at activists, writers and creatives. Events include comedy, live music performances, speakers and workshops.
Womenfest Key West, Florida, Sept 4–7 womenfest.com
The tropical island delight of Key West, the southernmost point in the continental US, puts on this steamy event every September. A wonderfully walkable island, dotted with six-toed cats and free-roaming chickens, Key West is a quirky place with a laid-back character all its own. Highlights of Womenfest include eco tours, jet skiing, snorkelling and dolphin-watching trips, golďŹ ng among the palm trees, drag shows, yoga, speed dating, karaoke, comedy, cocktail parties, concerts and contests. The Bourbon Street Pub has a hectic itinerary, including the Beach Blanket Butch and Babe Bash, complete with tiki bar and hot tub, and the Burly Burlesque Show, while women-owned resort Pearl’s puts on pool parties and Itsy Bitsy Bikini Contests.
ALL-MALE GAY CAMPING 90 MINS FROM PEACE BRIDGE
Shedonism Las Vegas, Sept 4–8 shedonismvegas.com
Taking over the Rumors all-suite boutique resort, this weekend-long celebration is Sin City’s most alluring women’s event. Parties by day and night, pop stars, comedy, poker and a parade are just some of the enticements on the table for those who want to strike out for Nevada this September.
Eressos Women’s Festival Lesbos, Greece, Sept 6–20 womensfestival.eu
Workshops, walks, massages, reiki, art and photography workshops, outings and safaris draw women from all over the world to the ultimate lesbian destination. Mediterranean folk music lines up alongside DJ nights, fashion shows, open-air ďŹ lm screenings and rock-climbing demos. Run by Sappho Women, this is the only festival on this list that offers the chance to master Greek dancing.
